EDUCATIONWELFARE Hey everybody,

Hi everyone!!!

I hope you are all enjoying your first few weeks at Waterford I.T. Hopefully you are all starting to get organised for the semester ahead and going to class. I will be around this week to all classes to get the details of elected class representatives and to carry out the elections of those who have yet to elect a Rep. Without an active Class Rep system the Students’ Union won’t be as strong as possible so I would encourage all classes to elect a strong representative as soon as possible. If you ever need anything feel free to contact me on 086-0499842 or at education@witsu.ie Brian

their support for First Fortnight’s campaign to challenge mental health prejudice and discrimination.

REPUBLIC of Loose are set to play a very special show at Waterford IT on Wednesday October 12 as part of the innovative new First Fortnight college tour to help challenge mental health prejudice and discrimination. Organised by arts-based mental health awareness project First Fortnight (firstfornight.com), the all-day event will also see WIT host a free screening of a special student-only cut of the acclaimed RTE documentary series, ‘I See A Darkness’, as well as a talk and question and answers session with the documentary’s makers and participants. The series is an intimate portrait of three suicide stories: two deaths by suicide and one attempted suicide. First Fortnight has staged successful music events in Dublin on the first two weeks of every year, for the past two years, as part of its mental health awareness campaign. Students in Waterford are one of only three colleges and universities across Ireland who will take part in their inaugural student tour, which is staged in association with Suicide or Survive (SOS) USI and See Change, the national mental health stigma reduction charity. The tour will also visit UCD and Galway/ Mayo IT. With the 10th anniversary looming, Republic of Loose remain one of Ireland’s best live acts and have expressed

Mental health prejudice and discrimination can do more lasting harm to people than a period of low mood or self harm. It is important for students — as well as the general population — to help fight mental health stigma and open dialogue on the mental health issues that face us all.

In Ireland, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem at some point in our life. That’s enough of us to fill Croke Park 14 times over. It’s also six times the number of students who enrolled in all our Universities and all our ITs combined right across the county last year, and its more people than the combined population of Cork, Clare, Galway, Limerick and Waterford. Tickets for First Fortnight presents Republic of Loose live in WIT will be on-sale from September 28th from WITSU. If you would like more information on mental health issues, please contact Student Union Welfare Officer Denise McCarthy. For more information on First Fortnight see Firstfortnight.com

GAA Club News

WIT has a proud record of GAA within the college and the 2011-12 season gets under way this week, as trials take place for Fresher’s in all disciplines of camogie, hurling, ladies football, and men’s football. In 2011 there was plenty of success in the college as the ladies swept the boards winning the Ashbourne Cup in camogie for the third year and a row, while the Giles Cup was secured for the first time ever by the ladies football team, the intermediate hurling team also collected the All Ireland title and the men’s handball squad won the 60 x 30 team title for the second year in a row.

The GAA office is located upstairs in the courtyard building on the main campus. It is opened Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.30pm so feel free to drop in if you have any questions or want to sign up. All GAA notices are displayed on the screen in the main atrium, so please keep an eye on this for dates of training, matches and other activities. Sign up today and be part of the biggest club in WIT. Conor Phelan, WIT GAA Development Officer Contact Details: • Tel: 051-302239 • Mob: 087 7547921 •FAX: 051-353906 • Email: gaa@wit.ie
