As we come to the end of yet another year and with Winter well and truly upon us and the threat of the dreaded white stuff, it is nice to know that Spring is only round the corner and thoughts should now be aimed at booking your society golf for 2024. We hope that all our readers have enjoyed the 2023 golfing season. Having played some memorable venues ourselves, such as Sherwood Forest (a must for any enthusiastic golfer), Orchardleigh estate in Somerset (our course of the year for the region) and the fantastic Stony holme course in Carlisle spring to mind as three of our favorites. Within this edition you can see features on all three courses mentioned above, along with many others that are waiting to greet you in the coming 2024 season. We hope (as always) that you find the news and profiles interesting with a view to booking your society golf for next year. Top Class Venue In The Heart Of The West Midlands The review team here at Your Golfer Magazine recently visited Windmill Village Golf And Country Club based on the outskirts of Coventry. Read on for our opinions and review of this exciting venue. Windmill Village Golf And Country Club, based just outside Coventry, really is a fantastic venue for visitors and society golfers alike. Ideally situated just 10 minutes from Birmingham airport and just a stones throw from Coventry city centre, this venue offers pretty much anything you would need for a successful golf event. Not only is it home to a well maintained and rather challenging course, the venue also offers a hotel, gymnasium, Spa and three restaurants. Our first impression of the course from looking at the scorecard was that it seemed rather short with some of the par fours a lot shorter than you would normally expect. However once you start playing you come to understand that this is a rather unique course. Starting with three par 3s in a row (we believe this is the only course in England that offers such a challenge). Club selection and accuracy are key to starting well. Moving on through the first nine you continue with three par 4s and three par 5s.

Scoring well on the front nine (especially the first three holes) is essential to posting a good score. As you pass onto the back nine the course seems to close in slightly. The par 3 holes on the 12th and 13th demand accuracy as any wayward shots are heavily punished with out of bounds to the left, bunkers guarding the greens and water on the right. If you manage to deal with the accuracy that is needed and also manage to score well on the par 4s then you will post a good score. However this is easier said than done! As a society venue our opinion is that it ticks all the right boxes. Windmill Village is an ideal course for all level of handicap and the venue is well set up for anything from a romantic golf break for two, society golf and away days as well as being able to offer large corporate golf packages and charity events.

The catering is also excellent with three restaurants on site. The first is the Cellars restaurant offering golfing groups and individuals a delicious menu ranging from soup of the day through to rib eye steak. Ideal for coming in straight off the course! You then have "Loft 18", a more formal dining experience and "Vault 52" ideal for groups that prefer private dining. Overall we felt that the venue itself lends itself to all handicappers as an ideal test of skill and ability on what can be a short but tricky course. Definitely one to put on your list for 2024.

Grant will allow Sutton Coldfield golf charity to build UK’s first-ever disability-friendly putting green A pioneering Sutton Coldfield golfing charity is to build the UK’s first disability-friendly putting green – thanks to support from the Royal Town’s historic charitable trust. Walmley Golf Foundation Community Interest Company is set to install the artificial short game area and putting green, which will be suitable for mobility equipment, after receiving a grant for £44,500 from Sutton Coldfield Charitable Trust (SCCT), which has been supporting good causes in the area for centuries. The specially-designed green – believed to be the first of its kind on the country – will be installed at Walmley Golf Club, where members first set up the foundation in 2017 with the aim of making golf more relevant and accessible to those within Sutton Coldfield. Since then, the Foundation has provided and funded golf sessions for in excess of 1000 participants from more than 40 organisations. The new green represents a major step forward in its work, and could be copied at golf clubs across the country. Walmley Golf Foundation CIC Chairwoman Lesley Robbins said: “We are very excited about the new short game area, which will potentially make golf so much more accessible for so many local people, simply by giving them to access a good quality green and coaching support.

“This grant from SCCT will provide substantial help in getting the artificial putting green and short game area put in place and allow more access to people with mobility issues such as paraplegics, amputees, stroke victims, wheelchairs users and people using walking aids. We believe that golf should be inclusive to all as an activity. “Traditional wheelchairs or walking aids cannot be used on a grass green without causing significant damage and movement is limited, and while there are specific chairs designed for disability golf, they are extremely expensive and not practical for grass roots participation. “So, developing an artificial area like this is potentially a game changer for so many people who want to get involved in golf.” The CIC is now working closely with Hampshirebased Huxley Golf, who will be designing, supplying and installing the green, which will measure 30ft x 40ft and will be accessed by a newly surfaced pathway from the club house, which has been paid for by Walmley Golf Club.

It will occupy an area in front of three covered driving bays, which along with a teaching studio were installed in 2021 and designed by head coach Sam Stuart, who has been instrumental in driving the CIC’s work. Sam Stuart said: “I attended the European Disabled Golf Association World Series event at the Belfry in 2022, to meet with officials and players, and to see and hear their stories of disabled golf at an elite level. “The biggest common denominator amongst the players was their first interaction with golf and the realisation that they can in fact play golf despite their individual disability. “It is this opportunity for a first interaction with golf and developing the grass roots access availability to those with a physical disability we want to improve going forward at Walmley. A big part of achieving this goal is having a suitable and accessible facility for participants to use – which is why this short game area and putting green will be so valuable. “We are very grateful for the support of SCCT, as everything that we do at the Golf Foundation is paid for by donations and fundraising. This grant will make the putting green a reality.” Preparation will begin in October for installation of the green, which will be framed by an hard-wearing outer surface, which will be suitable for wheelchairs and walking aids, and will give players access to two teeing areas, from which they will be able to attempt a series of putts.

SCCT Chief Executive Tina Swani, said: “We are delighted to be supporting this brilliant project, which will make golf accessible to so many people across the area. “Two of our key aims as a Trust are to promote active lifestyles in the area, and to reach out and support those who may be isolated or unable to access facilities. Walmley Golf Foundation CIC clearly shares these ambitions, and has done so much work since it was founded in 2017 to introduce people to the joys of golf. We’re very happy to help them achieve the next chapter in their story.” Work will begin on the new facility on October 16th, with an opening planned to take place on 16th May 2024.

PEAFORD MAKES HISTORY WITH VICTORY AT JUSTIN ROSE TELEGRAPH JUNIOR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP Surrey’s Annabel Peaford made history by becoming the youngest-ever winner of the Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Championship as 24 of the finest elite junior golfers from Europe competed in the 2023 edition of the event at Quinta do Lago in Portugal last week. The 14-year-old, a member of Walton Heath Golf Club, led from the start of the 54-hole girls’ tournament held on the resort's prestigious South Course – a par-72 layout which was recently named Europe’s Best Golf Course and Portugal’s Best Golf Course at the 2023 World Golf Awards. In the boys’ tournament, Morton Bailey, 17, from West Hove Golf Club, East Sussex, took the lead early and never wavered despite Connor Graham – the Scot who, in September, became the Walker Cup’s youngest ever player – chasing him all the way. Sponsored for the fourth time by former winner Justin Rose, 12 girls and 12 boys competed across the threeround tournament from October 30 to November 3. With victory, Peaford and Bailey join an illustrious list of previous winners which includes Rose, his European Ryder Cup-winning colleagues Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Fitzpatrick, as well as Ladies European Tour stars Jodi Ewart Shadoff, Melissa Reid and Carly Booth, as a winner of the unofficial ‘major of junior golf’. After her final-round 73 took her to three-under-par and a five-shot victory over Scotland’s Freya Russell and defending champion Sophia Fullbrook, Peaford said she was looking forward to phoning her twin sister, Emily. “I am off plus-four and Emily is off plus-three and we are very competitive,” said Peaford. “She is in school but I know she was cheering me on and this means a lot to my family. Mum couldn’t be here, but Dad was, and he’s my coach, and I’m just really proud because everyone’s a lot older than me.

“I’ve just got into the English girls’ squad and it’s just really good to play alongside so many of them. This is a big advertisement for my game – a lot of people will see this. It’s just a great opportunity to have.” Bailey also led from the start of the tournament with a final round 69 moving him to seven-under and to a sixshot win over Moseley’s Phillip Krone. “I was tense, because playing against someone of Connor’s ability, and the other guys, you know he can just turn it on at any time,” Bailey said. “It only takes a bogey or two to unsettle yourself. But I held strong and this feels awesome.” Quinta do Lago has earned a reputation as a leading figure in European golf, with a trio of stunning 18-hole courses – the North Course, South Course and Laranjal – attracting visitors from around the world. The South Course underwent an extensive €7million renovation in 2021 and was crowned Europe’s Best Golf Course at the World Golf Awards last year as the resort celebrated its 50th anniversary. Away from the courses, Quinta do Lago’s guests can choose from 14 first-class bars and restaurants and stay in the boutique Magnolia hotel. Opened since 2018, Quinta do Lago’s The Campus has quickly become one of Europe’s leading elite performance centres, hosting the Portugal national football team, PSG and the Ireland Rugby Union men’s senior first team squad. The Algarve is a favourite with tourists for its natural beauty and ideal golfing climate, and the sweeping 2,000-acre resort has now celebrated five decades as one of the region’s most popular destinations.

CANTERBURY GOLF CLUB LAUNCHES NEW COLT MEMBERSHIP FOR WOMEN October 2023; Canterbury, Kent, UK: Canterbury Golf Club has launched its new Women’s Colt Membership designed to attract women who are new to golf as well as those returning to the game to be able to enjoy the range of facilities on offer at the Club for just £950 per year. This new membership is on line with the current push in golf, supported by The R&A, to encourage more women into the game on a long term basis. “Canterbury has always boasted a strong female membership but we have become aware that many women, especially working women and those with family commitments, are finding it increasingly harder to justify taking up or returning to golf,” says Club Chairman Steve Eeles. “We believe that our new Women’s Colt Membership makes it a lot easier for women to enjoy the benefits of Club membership at a reduced cost and at times that are more convenient for them. Similar programmes have been launched at some other clubs in the past but they have in general been restricted to a maximum of say six months. We don’t believe that is nearly long enough for someone to get to grips with golf and to find out if the Club is the right one for them, hence the two year term of the membership.” Golf has rarely had it so good with a yearon-year increase in participation since 2019 whilst the health benefits of playing golf, for both mental and physical wellbeing, have never been so well documented. Playing a round of golf is also a great way to catch up

The 2nd hole (l) & the 9th green of the Harry Colt classic course at Canterbury Golf Club. with friends and meet and make new friends. Canterbury, home to a classic Harry Colt course, has a long tradition of being an inclusive club; it was the first in Kent to have a woman both as Club Captain and Chairman of the Club, two of the most important roles within the organisation.

The benefits of the membership* are as follows: • Limited to 20 participants and a two-year term • Includes six monthly group lessons spread across the main golf season • Relevant members discounts for the driving range and in the bar & restaurant. • Ability to obtain a handicap and play in organised competitions* • In the second year, allowed to participate in all Ladies Club competitions • Appointed a “golf buddy” in the second year of membership • Cannot play on Mondays nor before midday on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays unless playing in competitions • After second year must upgrade or leave the Club. • Price - £950 per annum

Former Ladies European Tour winner, Maxine Burton, is a professional at the Club who is fully supportive of the new membership. “We have for a while participated in England Golf’s Women in Golf programme but we feel that this goes to the next level, and I look forward to welcoming more women into our Club and helping them with their game and introducing them to fellow lady members.” Canterbury Golf Club was formed in 1927 and the 18-hole layout was designed by arguably the finest course designer of the time, Colt, who boasts Wentworth, Sunningdale, Rye and Camberley Heath among his 100-plus creations. He also played a major role in the re-designs of Muirfield, Hoylake, Royal Liverpool and Royal Portrush.

Your Golfer Magazine Reviews The Stunning Sherwood Forest Golf Club Sherwood Forest Golf Club is home to the oldest and in our opinion the best Heathland course in the UK. From the first hole to the last this course requires concentration and accuracy from the tee. With 98 bunkers laid out perfectly across 18 holes of mature heathland, true and fast greens with not a bump in them, this is a course that can offer a challenge to even the best golfers. Starting at the first you are challenged with 322 par four which can be a gentle introduction to the course with a short carry over heather being the only real hurdle. It gives you a good opportunity to open with a par. However, do not be lulled into a false sense of security! As we move gradually through the front nine there are good opportunities to score well. You must be straight and course management is an absolute must to avoid the bunkers and the heather which is waiting to catch any wayward shots. From The First tee to the fifth you will play a loop of holes with the clubhouse still in sight. Once on the fifth tee you are faced with the first par five of your round. Distance and accuracy are key . You then disappear into the Nottinghamshire countryside for the rest of your round.

From the 10th going through to the 18th concentration is key and so is a course planner, as often you will be taking blind tee shots over heather. Our favourite hole of the course was the 17th a short par four with a perfectly positioned bunker on the left of the fairway and a cluster of big trees on the right, which make you think about taking something different then your driver to put yourself in the correct position with a slight dog leg left running down to the inviting green. Away from the course itself the facilities are excellent with a 300-yard driving range and a beautifully kept chipping and putting area including bunkers (of course). The clubhouse is a subtle mix of the modern and traditional. It has everything you would expect from a club with such history, gold leaf boards naming past captains and comp winners and glorious views of the course. The food is hearty, home cooked and most importantly value for money, making it the ideal place to relax and look back on this wonderful course. The pro shop is also well stocked with some of the latest names in golf course fashion. A nice touch in the clubhouse is a free sun screen dispenser! We thought this was an excellent idea. How often have you come off the course sunburnt due to no sunscreen??

The back nine is a different story. From speaking to a couple of the members prior to our round, we were told that golfers very rarely better their front nine score on the back, and how right they were.

Overall, Sherwood Forest Golf Club is a fantastic venue for visitors and/or societies that are looking for a challenging but thoroughly enjoyable golf experience. In our opinion it is a "must play" course.

When you start the back nine the course seems to close in on you a little and you are generally teeing off into the wind. This gives yet another problem to think about when selecting the right club. But what a challenge it offers. No wonder this course is rated the 35th best course in England!

We hope to be back in the end of the Summer as we understand the course really comes alive around August and September and gives yet another challenge.

As part of its anniversary activities, Seaton Carew will be hosting England Golf’s premier tournament, the English Amateur Championships which take place between the 28th of July and 4th of August. The 2024 event will be even more significant because it’s also the governing body’s centenary year. Uniquely, Seaton Carew has 22 holes which are played as two different layouts, although only one is in play at a given time. Golfers often compliment the club on the tightly-mown fairways and fast running greens as they thread their way between almost one hundred deep-faced bunkers and contend with whatever the elements throw at them. One thing’s for sure, breaking par will be quite an achievement! The superbly appointed clubhouse is home to relaxing bar and lounge areas, and the popular Bunting Lounge offers traditional home-cooked meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The club is renowned in the north-east for excellent dining options and fine hospitality, and visitors are welcome to relax in the historic Captains’ Corner surrounded by 150 years of past club dignitaries.

Milford Haven Golf Club

Although a small county, Pembrokeshire offers some truly excellent golfing choices and is packed full of memorable blend of links and parkland style golf courses all with breath-taking panoramic views of the surrounding coast and countryside. Famed for its beautiful beaches and views, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park features its own championship parkland venue, Milford Haven Golf Club. Steeped in history and set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, visitors are assured of an unforgettable time with so much to see and do for all the family. Arguably the best golf club in West Wales, Milford Haven Golf Club has built a reputation for high quality golf, facilities and service. The par 70 golf course measures 6,067 yards from the championship white tees and is set up for all-year-round playability. In fact, the course is presented as well in the winter months as it is during the summer. The Milford Haven course begins with a series of picturesque pond holes, which are strategically placed to catch any wayward shots. It then meanders to the middle of the golf course where views of the National Park countryside and Milford Estuary can be enjoyed.

On April 3rd 2019 the club held the opening ceremony and competition to celebrate the redesign of the signature 18th hole. ‘Fountain View’, the new eighteenth hole at Milford Haven Golf Club was formally opened by a group of rugby players from the current Welsh national team and led by Welsh rugby legend Scott Quinnell. The opening was followed by a Texas Scramble where some of the Welsh heroes played in groups alongside existing Milford Haven members.

The Welsh Rugby Stars open the new 18th at Milford Haven. For the development of the 18th, Milford Haven’s management team obtained the architectural services of well-known and experienced course developer, Marc Westenborg who set about utilising the natural landscape which encompassed the existing green. Marc added a water feature adjacent to the Pine trees to create indecision as to taking the driver or laying up and also added two new bunkers to guard the front left hand side of the putting surface. The new 18th at Milford Haven represents a challenge to golfers and calls for a few decisions to be made when standing on the 18th tee!

The imposing Milford Haven clubhouse building overlooks Fountain View and contains all of the amenities that you would expect from a first class golfing venue. The club’s first class facilities include Fountain View restaurant, serving mouth-watering dishes to suit all palates, well-stocked bars and comfortable lounges with stunning views over the golf course. Visitors receive a warm welcome each time they play at Milford Haven. The club offer a variety of packages, which can be tailored depending on the visiting group’s requirements and how many golfers will be attending. The club’s Professional team will also be on hand to offer their advice and assistance throughout the day, ensuring that the event runs smoothly.
