Located about a 1.5-hour drive from Bangkok (and even less from the airport), Pattaya makes for the perfect quick beach escape. And beyond its less-than-salubrious nightlife, the coastal city does offer numerous great attractions for visitors of all ages.
FAMILY FUN Located a 30-minute drive from Pattaya, or just an hour from Bangkok, Khao Kheow Open Zoo (038-318444 ext. 222, www.kkopenzoo.com) is a must-visit for families with kids. Set over 5,059 rai (80 hectares), of land, it’s Thailand’s largest zoo and features various different zones from the African savannah to the tropical rainforests. Home to over 300 animal species, it’s also the biggest tiger center in the Asia-Pacific region. You can drive around the spacious zoo or hop out to enjoy various activities such as hand-feeding the resident deer or catching one of the animal shows. There are numerous ways to enjoy messing about on the Gulf of Thailand in Pattaya, from para sailing to jet skis. In addition, its calm waters and many secluded bays make it a popular destination for sailing all year round. In fact, the coastal city attracts a large number of local and international sailors and is home to a large yachting community and several yacht clubs. The best-known ones are Ocean Marina Yacht Club (038-237-310, www.oceanmarinayachtclub.com) and Royal Varuna Yacht Club (038250-116, www.varuna.org). Every year, Pattaya also hosts one of Asia’s largest sailing events, the Top of the Gulf Regatta (www.topoftheulfregatta. com), held in May, drawing more than 250 boats and 700 sailors from more than 20 countries to the event. Another big annual event in Pattaya is the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show, held in November, featuring over 100 national and international exhibitors representing many of the world’s leading yacht and luxury brands.
The city’s fast development means an increase in the number of luxurious hotels, properties and high-end dining and drinking options. One of the best spots to enjoy the sunset views has to be the Horizon restaurant and bar at the Hilton Pattaya (038-253-000, www.pattaya.hilton.com). Set on the 34th floor above CentralFestival Pattaya Beach, the stylish rooftop spot has a striking design and décor, offering panoramic views of Pattaya Bay. From 5-7pm daily, it offers a onefor-one deal on beers and signature cocktails, including classics like mojito, cosmopolitan and Singapore sling. For a Sunday brunch, drop by Mantra restaurant and bar (038-429-591, www.mantra-pattaya.com), which has an eclectic décor and spacious seating areas over two floors. Every Sunday from 11am-3pm, the restaurant offers an extensive international brunch buffet featuring many cooking stations. Here, you’ll find dishes like foie gras, sirloin steaks, prime roasts, cold cuts, Alaskan king crabs and oysters. The price is B1,690 per person and it’s an additional B1,490 for the wine buffet.
Though Pattaya is not famous for its beaches, it does have quite a few beautiful islands close by. The most popular is Koh Larn, 30 minutes by boat from Pattaya’s Bali Hai pier. The ferry service runs every 1.5 to two hours starting from 7am to 6.30pm daily and the fare is B30 per person. A speedboat service is also available at about B1,500-B2,000 per trip. The island is not only popular because it’s convenient to get to, though, but is also home to nice long stretches of beach with clean white sand and clear seas. Among the island’s most beautiful beaches are Ta Waen and Samae. Here, you can also partake in para sailing, banana boat riding, jet skiing or you can just explore the island on a motorbike. There are a number of resorts on the island, or just catch the last ferry which leaves at 6pm back to Pattaya. Another serene island near Pattaya is Koh Kham in Sattahip district. Under the management of the Royal Thai Navy (tinyurl.com/kr5fmzh, 038-422-170), the serene island is well preserved and only open for ecotourism from November to April, 9am-4pm on Sat-Sun and public holidays. Visitors are not allowed to stay on the island so you can only spend a day out there and catch the boat back at either 1pm or 4pm. Though it’s close to Pattaya, Koh Kham has nice white sandy beaches, clear sea water, abundant coral reefs and a number of species of marine creatures.
Getting there A taxi from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport to Pattaya is around B1,000 per single trip and it’s B1,400 from downtown Bangkok. You can also get a bus at the eastern bus terminal station near BTS Ekkamai at B124 per trip for an air-con vehicle. Buses leave every 30 minutes daily from 5am-11pm. For car rentals, try Sixt Car Rental (www. sixtthailand.com) or Thai Rent a Car (www.thairentacar. com), which cost from B1,000 per day (excluding petrol). Started in 2004, the race attracts a large fleet of local and international vessels from sports yachts to charter boats. Taking place on August 28-31, this year’s Anantara King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament is moving from the royal beach resort of Hua Hin to Bangkok’s Siam Polo Park at VR Sports Club on Lat KrabangThepparatch Road. From a humble start of just two participating teams in 2001, this unusual sport that replaces horses with elephants has become a global event. Last year saw 16 teams and over 50 players, including Thai supermodels, professional polo players, the New Zealand All-Blacks rugby team and Thailand’s well-known transgender cabaret performers from Miss Tiffany’s take part. Some of this year’s highlights will include an opening parade, children’s day, ladies’ day and lots of food, drink and elephantrelated activities for families to enjoy. As well as proving a real spectacle, the event has already raised more than US$750,000 for elephant-related charities since it started and this year will see 50 street elephants receive full veterinary checks during the tournament. As the conclusion of La Fete French cultural festival the leading galleries across Bangkok, including the likes of 100 Tonson, Artery and the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), will open from 7pm until late for one special night. Held on July 5, Galleries Night will involve a lot of pop-up collaborations and one-off projects to provide a very unique art experience.

Situated inside the space is the Hof Art Gallery, which exhibits more than 200 art pieces, mostly by Thai artists. Be warned though, the boats don’t wait long at the piers, making getting on and off rather nerve-wracking (and physically-challenging). AIRPORT LINK—The Airport Rail Link (ARL) is one of the fastest and cheapest ways to get to and from Suvarnabhumi Airport, especially for those traveling light. There are two types of trains: Express Line and City Line. The ARL Express Line runs from Suvarnabhumi to either Phaya Thai (connecting to the BTS) or Makkasan stations (tenminute walk to MRT Petchaburi), and takes 20 minutes. The City Line stops at six stations and takes around 40 minutes. THAI Airways passengers boarding the Express Line can check in their bags at Makkasan station. SKYTRAIN/UNDERGROUND—The
