EDWARD B. WILLIAMS ’27
A native of Edgefield, South Carolina, Dr. E.B. Williams joined the Morehouse College faculty in 1937. Dr. Williams served Morehouse College, his alma mater, for almost forty (40) years as professor of Economics and Business Administration, before retiring in June 1976. Under his leadership, the department became the largest in the college and produced more M.B.A.’s, Ph.D’s, and business leaders than any other department in a predominately black college in the United States. Dr. Williams received his Bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College in 1927. He complemented his degree from Morehouse College with a M.A. degree from Atlanta University and a Ph.D. degree from Columbia University. A member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, Dr. Williams always encouraged students to pursue an education, which would enable them to achieve a higher degree of competence in a vocational choice. His eloquence inspired many young people to greater ambition and achievement. He exemplified himself as a husband, father, gentleman, scholar, and teacher. Dr. Edward B. May 14th, 2020 Dear Colleagues: I am honored to bring greetings to the students, faculty, and staff of the Morehouse College Division of Business Administration and Economics at the 42nd annual E. B. Williams Honors Banquet, a celebration that highlights the legacy of excellence in business education at Morehouse. The annual banquet, established by Dr. Edward Buchanan Williams, the second chair of the Economics and Business Administration Department, bestows the highest honor, the E.B. Williams Award, to the uppermost ranked senior in the division and recognizes the achievements of juniors and seniors who have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Additionally, the banquet also recognizes the recipient of the 38th James A. Hefner Award, an honor
that is presented to a senior who displays the quintessential values of a Morehouse Man—a commitment to academics, leadership, and service. On behalf of the entire Morehouse Community, I would like to congratulate these stellar students for their achievements and the substantial scholarship support that they have earned. We are immensely grateful to the 18 corporate partners whose generous contributions help to support this event and other programs in the division. I would also like to salute our faculty and staff for their continued commitment to the success of the students of this division. May this momentous occasion continue to be a catalyst for innovation and the pursuit of excellence.

May 14th, 2020 Greetings, On behalf of the Division of Business Administration and Economics (BAE), I will like to welcome you to E.B. Williams’s award. Let me begin by thanking everyone for honoring this occasion. Thank you to the Williams and Hefner families, the President, Provost, Associate Provosts, Mr. Henry Goodgame, staffs, faculty, students, and most especially our corporate partners for coming out to support us virtually today. Shout-out to my team Drs. Hollingsworth, White, Williams, Mr. Cooper, Ms. Womack, Mr. Brown, Ms. Watts, and Ms. Hobley for coordinating this activity. According to the African proverb – it takes a village to educate a child and we are indebted to everyone for coming out to celebrate our students with us despite the unexpected COVID-19 pandemic. This occasion is named after Dr. Edward Buchanan Williams, who served the longest reigning as Chairman of the Morehouse College Division of Business Administration and Economics. Appropriately, the highest scholarly recognition conferred during this occasion is the “E.B. Williams Award.” This event has experienced significant growth since its inception and remains one of the signature events in the Division in advancing the facets of our program, which includes the number of honorees, benefactors, scholarships, and internships. As President Thomas often reminds us – “Excellence is a habit” and this is an opportunity to honor our students that have exemplified excellency in their respective disciplines. The Division expects nothing but the best from our students and this event is one of the Division’s signature award ceremony where we recognize students with exceptional achievement. For the past forty-two (42) years, the Division has recognized students with exemplary scholarly achievement and it gives us great pleasure to celebrate the intellectual curiosity of these students. This represents our 42nd annual recognition of outstanding academic achievement in the Division of Business Administration and Economics. This is the first year we have done so in a virtual/remote environment. The health crisis of the Coronavirus is challenging us all to forge news ways of maintaining our health and developing ways to interact with one another but I am constantly reminded of and inspired by your social engagement, intellectual dedication and determination to excel and make a positive contribution in the communities in which you live. The first E.B. Williams Awards program was held in the spring of 1979 and honored 40 students and our program will now recognize over 130 students. WILLIAMS HONORS BANQUET In April of every year, the business community, faculty, and students of the Division of Business Administration and Economics come together for the annual E.B. Williams Awards Program.The awards program, which began in 1979, has two purposes: • To recognize and award outstanding students for their academic achievements • To introduce these students to the corporate community Each year over 100 juniors and seniors within the Division of Business Administration and Economics are honored.This event is named in honor of Dr. Edward B. Williams, a Phi Beta Kappa scholar and the third African American to receive a Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University. Under Dr. Williams’ leadership which lasted for 24 years, the department was positioned to realize the tremendous growth and national recognition it now holds.

QUARTER CENTURY CLUB
For over 150 years, Morehouse College has been guided by a commitment to excellence in pursuing her mission to develop men with disciplined minds; men who are prepared for leadership and service in communities on the local, regional, national, and international stages of society. Morehouse has been able to continuously and effectively accomplish this mission through the diligent, arduous work and personal sacrifices of the men and women who serve as the faculty, staff and administrators of Morehouse College—work and sacrifices that oftentimes goes unnoticed. To this end, the Division’s Quarter Century Club Leadership Award was established to recognize and pay tribute to the steadfast and long-term contributions of the faculty, staff and administrators of the Division for their persistent, unselfish service to Morehouse College. In its inaugural year of 2004, seven (7) awardees were recognized. In subsequent years, the Division awardees are recognized upon reaching 25 years of service to Morehouse College.

2020 E. B. Williams Award Jared Bryson Jared Bryson is a senior studying economics and Chinese at Morehouse College from Bolingbrook, IL. On campus, he leads the Protégé Program which provides professional development to talented first-year students interested in business. Through international experiences in China, Cuba, Haiti, Liberia, Brazil, and Mexico, he has broadened his global perspective and passion for social impact in communities of need around the world. Experience at global firms like Apple have helped him to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to change the way the world uses resources. Following graduation, he has received an offer to join Venture for America as a Fellow. Venture For America is a fellowship for recent grads who want to learn how to build a business while making an impact.
2020 James Hefner Award George G. Grier George Grier is a senior business administration major from Greensboro, North Carolina. He currently serves as the Morehouse chapter president of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA). He is also a part of Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT) as a Career Prep Fellow. In his spare time on campus, he participates in marching and jazz band playing saxophone. After graduation, George will be working for Deloitte in Charlotte, NC as a consultant in their Risk and Financial Advisory practice.
2020 Benjamin McLaurin Award Nathan P. Rolle Nathan Rolle, a.k.a Nate, is an international student from the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. This young man is also a first-generation college student, within his immediate family, who came to the U.S. to improve the quality of his education. Nathan is pursuing a B.A. in International Studies with a minor in Spanish. Alongside being an Oprah Winfrey Scholar at Morehouse College, Nathan is an inductee of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. Also, he is a CIEE Study Abroad Ambassador, the first Bahamian member of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc. (Alpha Pi Chapter), an inductee of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, and a former GVI (Global Vision International) volunteer for undereducated children in Costa Rica. Currently, Nathan has a 3.86 cumulative grade point average. Nathan plans on pursuing a career in offshore banking or foreign relations. He is currently working on seeking employment with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Bahamas. JAMES A. HEFNER
A native of Brevard North Carolina, Dr. James A. Hefner served as the Economics professor and Chair of the Economics and Business Administration Department at Morehouse College and Provost of Clark Atlanta University. While at Morehouse College, Dr. Hefner became the first professor to hold the Charles E. Merrill Chair, an endowment of $500,000 by Merrill Lynch. During his tenure, Dr. Hefner recruited Drs. Willis B. Sheftall, John E. Williams, John W. Handy, and Anderson Williams. Without the teaching and leadership of these individuals, the Division of Business Administration and Economics would not be the preeminent division it is today. Dr. James A. Hefner passed August 27, 2015. THE JAMES A. HEFNER AWARD This award is presented in honor of Dr. James A. Hefner, third chair of the Department of Economics and Business Administration. The Hefner Award is presented to the senior who synergistically exemplifies the many attributes necessary for a successful career in the business world.The Division faculty select the senior based on academic performance, leadership ability, support and participation in departmental activities and service to the college. In the words of Dr. Hefner, the recipient of the Hefner Award exemplifies “urbanity in its purest form.

THE BENJAMIN P. MCLAURIN FELLOW
The distinction of being named the Benjamin P. McLaurin Fellow is given to the student selected to serve as the Spring Tour’s lead ambassador. The lead ambassador is the student who best epitomizes the “McLaurin Persona” through his demonstration of superior qualities in the areas of elocutionary skills, professionalism and social etiquette. Mr. McLaurin’s career at Morehouse College spanned 38 years and included being the first Director of Career Placement at Morehouse College and first Director of Career Services for the Division of Business Administration and Economics. at Morehouse College. Mr. McLaurin was key in institutionalizing the International Spring Tour which has become one of the signature leadership development co-curricular activities of the Division. Mr. Benjamin P. McLaurin passed May 22, 2007.

STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS Sales Minor Competition Winners Spring 2020 LaJason Lovett, Junior Psychology Major and Professional Sales Minor, came in 3rd place and won $1800 for the Kennesaw State University Digital Marketing Competition. He presented during the competition to members of Solid Source Real Estate, the sponsor and host of the competition. "LaJason was amazing. What a stellar young man and truly a great example of a Morehouse Man. He arrived dressed for success and proceeded to not only compete well but also to be of service to others. He always had a great attitude and the judges were wow'ed by his original ideas. I'm so happy he won 3rd place and $1800!!" - Tyra Burton, Kennesaw State Professor and developer of the competition, Olatunde Sam is a senior Economics Major and Sales minor. He who won 'Best in Class' at the Partnering for Progress sales competition hosted by Tuskegee University and sponsored by 3M. Mr. Sam won a beautiful trophy and $100.

DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the department of Business Administration at Morehouse College is to develop intellectual capacity and skills, advance knowledge, and foster leadership abilities requisite for excellence in business practice, graduate studies and beyond. DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS MISSION AND OBJECTIVES The mission of the Department of Economics is to prepare students for careers as economic practitioners and researchers in the private sector, academia, and government. To accomplish this mission, the economics program emphasizes the requisite skills in analytical reasoning and effective communication through a solid background in economic theory and quantitative techniques. The program also stresses the importance of ethical professionalism and social awareness. The economics program is designed to improve the ability of students to think critically, write and speak effectively, regarding economic issues. These skills or abilities should be reflected in students increased ability to: 1. Identify those processes and institutions both domestically and internationally through which productive activity is organized. 2. Identify issues and problems where economic analysis can be appropriately applied. 3. Determine the appropriate tools of analysis to apply to a given economic issue or problem. 4. Adequately analyze an economic issue or problem and offer viable conclusions, solutions and recommendations
