Anyone with an eye for bumper stickers in these parts has been called upon to “Keep Portland Weird,” but what do you get when you go beyond the slogan—and, for that matter, beyond Portland? Perhaps you find yourself bringing your kids to visit the land of fairies and dragons at the Enchanted Forest, near Salem, or getting paleontological at Dinosaur Park along the coast. Jeff Davis—archaeologist, northwest ghost-lore expert, and co-author of Weird Oregon—will share these stories and more, when he returns to the Walters Cultural Arts Center for a special lecture on what makes our state weird, just in time for Halloween. Learn about some of the strangest places in the state at 7 p.m. on October 16 at the Walters Cultural Arts Center. The event is free.

Wild Mushrooms How many edible mushrooms can you identify in the Tillamook State Forest? This month you will have an opportunity to learn more about the local mushrooms you want to eat and the ones you should keep off your plate at a free program with Park Ranger Dan Osis. “Mysterious Mushrooms” will be held at 1 p.m. on October 14 at the Tillamook State Forest Center west of Gales Creek on Highway 6. www.tillamookforestcenter.org

The event will start with the exposition and marketplace from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Hillsboro Civic Center featuring presentations, displays, live music, and more. Then all are welcome at the ball from 7 to 11 p.m. held in the Odd Fellows Lodge downtown. Advance tickets are $12.50 each. The day of the event tickets to the exposition only are $5 and for the ball the cost is $15. For more information, visit www.timetravelersball.com

On October 7, more than 400 artists around the world will participate in the “Bird Art Installation Project,” including some artists on the Westside in Forest Grove. For the project, organized by Dutch artist Ed Hannsson, people are asked to create a bird-like sculpture in any medium, hang it on a tree, take a photo, and submit the photo to the project. Several local artists will display their birds along with showcasing some of their other work for “Art Fest” at The Helvi Smith Art Gallery at 1914 Elm Street in Forest Grove. The gallery will be open from 12 to 5 p.m. on October 7 and the event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.helvismith.com

She’s Not Dead The ladies of She’s Not Dead didn’t really set out to form an all-girl band, but it ended up working out that way. Now the foursome from Portland seems to fully embody the femme fatale punk rock glam thing, drawing inspiration from pioneers in the genre like The Runaways as well as contemporary artists like Paramore. Fronted on guitar and vocals by Kira Nesser, an 18-year-old platinum blonde with a nose ring, She’s Not Dead will play a free show at Ballad Town Billiards in Forest Grove at 9 p.m. on Saturday October 20. Nesser and drummer Samantha Howell met in middle school band class and from there decided to form their own band. Since then, they’ve played with guys and girls, ending up with the most recent permutation of the band which includes Annelise Josserand on bass and Keiko Andress on keyboard. Check out songs and pictures of the group online: www.shesnotdead.net

Fundraiser for Wildcat Sanctuary Exotic cats are often stunning creatures in the wild. On the prowl they are graceful and in the hunt they are deadly. It is one thing to admire wildcats in their natural habitat through film, photography, and wildlife centers, it’s another to bring one into your home. Sherwood’s Cheryl and Michael Tuller learned the difference some years ago when they bought a baby bobcat as a pet. They found that though the bobcat made an adorable kitten, it didn’t behave like a domestic cat, no matter how hard they tried to train it. So the Tullers created a place where the bobcat could live, the next best thing for this animal that could never successfully be returned to the wild. The place is called Wildcat Haven, an 8-acre non-profit sanctuary in the Sherwood hills that now houses more than 60 captive-born wildcats. Many of the cats were at one time either pets, bred for sales or fur, or part of an exotic animal zoo. The center is hosting a fundraiser dinner and auction this month at the Oregon Golf Club in West Linn to help support its mission of working to provide a refuge for cats wild at heart. Tickets are $75 each and can be purchased online. The event runs from 6 to 10 p.m. on October 27. For more information, go to: www.wildcathaven.org 8 - www.washingtoncountyreview.com

The little shop opened on Southwest Broadway Street in Beaverton last December. Store owner Deb Messina hosts classes and offers kits to start unique projects. “I want people to be successful, and if you're successful creating something small, next time you'll be willing to try something new,” says Messina.

3 Layer Quilt Shop 2013 Main Street Forest Grove, OR A love of quilting runs deep at the 3 Layer Quilt Shop in Forest Grove. The owner, Amy Klaus, grew up making quilts with her great-grandmother. In June, the shop moved from Gaston to Forest Grove. “I want them (customers) to feel as if my quilt shop is their sewing space too,” says Klaus. She’s also looking for teachers in order to offer quilting classes.

Defending World Art A Beaverton actress takes on the mission of saving an oppressed traditional Cambodian theatre company By Devan Bey

Helena de Crespo believes in art. She believes so fiercely in its ability to unify and propel a society that she has taken tremendous personal risk to defend it, spanning continents and cultures in her efforts. De Crespo – a Beaverton resident - has recently dedicated her time to preserving and sharing art worldwide. As a trained actress, her talents as a performer have collided with passionate attempts to preserve artistic endeavors through her fledgling charity Save World Art. Committed from an early age, de Crespo received classical training at the Royal Academy of Arts in London and performed for a number of years in Britain before turning to worldwide theatre. This global perspective followed de Crespo to Southeast Asia, where she inadvertently collided with a group of performers in a field near Ankgor Wat in Cambodia. The Reasmey Angkor Bassac Theatre Troupe practices the art of Bassac, an ancient theatrical performance indigenous to Cambodia. Stylized movements characterize the opera, which recounts Hindu epics and remains at the core of Cambodian culture. After years of violent suppression of artists and intellectuals by the Khmer Rouge regime, the actors were starved and desperate to continue the ancient tradition. With this in mind, the director of the eighty person troupe fell to "his knees with tears running down his cheeks and begged for help." De Crespo, fearful, but invigorated by the passion of the actors, returned home and began searching for aid. The results of this work have manifested themselves in the fledgling charity Save World Art. Helena de Crespo and Save World Art continue to work incessantly to preserve forms of cultural expression that have been starved by modernity and oppressive government regimes. The organization's limited funding extends beyond Cambodia, as artistry is threatened in almost every culture and language. De Crespo laments, "Culture means so much to me. If art dies in a society, or is annihilated, then that society dies." In efforts to expose Americans to theatre in its most compelling form and fundraise for Save World Art, de Crespo is now performing a work entitled, "Elective Affinities" for private audiences throughout Oregon and the West Coast. De Crespo describes the production as "very political and in no way political." Discerning viewers will recognize the danger of the mentality that could lead to an annihilation of a people. De Crespo smiles, "It's also funny. It’s brilliant. It’s an important piece of writing." For more information about Elective Affinities, Save World Art, or to inquire about a performance, please visit Helenadecrespo.com

Fall Traditions Return It’s everything you’ve ever loved about college football, and it’s in Western Washington County. Since 2010, the Pacific University Boxer Football team has brought the traditions of fall back to the Forest Grove campus after taking a 19-season hiatus and nearly fading from collective memory at the liberal arts school. Now the team, in its third season since being reinstated, presents the opportunity not only to catch some NCAA Division III ball on the Westside - complete with tailgaiting and lively student section - but also the chance to revisit the nostalgia of the past, wherever your favorite football memories have been made. The Boxers have two home games left this season, including October 13 when they face Pacific Lutheran University and November 3 when they take on Willamette. The games - held at Lincoln Park Stadium in Forest Grove - both start at 1 p.m. For the young team - a squad dominated by sophomores and juniors - so far the wins have been few and far between. But the squad was built from the ground up and is seemingly starting to gel. With more than 155 guys out and a no cut policy, the sidelines are packed with players.

Of those athletes, 90 are returning to the team and seven come back with All-Northwest Conference honors. That includes first-team wide receiver Jordan Fukumoto (Jr.) who racked up 130 yards and scored a touchdown in the Boxers’ home opener of the 2012 season. Head coach Keith Buckley has been leading the team since its return to Pacific in 2009. Buckley played defensive back from 1992 to 1995 at UC Davis and went on to earn a masters degree in physical education at Idaho. He’s coached up and down the West Coast, from his alma mater to Humboldt State. Now he’s in Forest Grove grappling with building a team and choosing between two dynamic quaterbacks each with competitive passing games. In their conference, Pacific faces off against opponents from Linfield, Lewis & Clark, Puget Sound, and Whitworth. The Boxers also opened the season with two non-conference games, including a loss to Simon Fraser for the home opener on August 30 (14-51) and a win at Occidental on September 8 (27-6) for their first road game of the season. The team makes its return after being cut in 1991. At that time, the school cited several factors for the decision - mainly tight finances, a lack of adequate facilities, and a competitive imbalance in a league where they faced state schools with significantly larger athletic budgets and the ability to recruit scholarship athletes.

Horror-Filled Theatre It is going to be a month of horror-filled musicals on the Westside as Broadway Rose Theatre Company continues its production of Little Shop of Horrors and Theatre in the Grove resurrects the cult-classic The Rocky Horror Show. Both shows center on love stories gone weird, with flesh-eating flora and sexually ambiguous scientists stealing some of the most popular scenes. Whether your are in the mood for a “time warp” or you have a hankering to take a trip downtown to “skid row”, Frank and Seymour have you covered. Sure these productions share some unconventional plot elements and portray plenty of horrors, but the origins of the shows are actually unsuspectingly opposite. Rocky Horror was originally a stage show in 1973, becoming a major motion picture two years later. In contrast, Little Shop the 1982 musical was based on a low-budget 1960s black comedy of the silver screen. Little Shop of Horrors runs at the New Stage in Tigard through October
