Fanno Creek Book If the creek could speak, would you listen? Educator and photographer Eric L. Lindstrom set out to learn the history of Fanno Creek and his local watershed, and is now telling the story of this vital environmental artery in his new book, Up Fanno Creek. The book includes the history of the stream, going back 16.5 million years to the geologic formation of the watershed. Lindstrom also explores modern issues facing the creek like sewage, stormwater, and development. He notes that at one time the locals nicknamed it Drano Creek and the water had a foul odor. Fanno Creek has since come a long way but is not in the clear yet. Lindstrom uses research and personal anecdotes to tell the story of the waterway that starts in the West Hills and travels through Tigard to Tualatin. “Up Fanno Creek is available online and at select locations. To learn more about the local author, his recent publication, and issues affecting your area watershed visit: www.watershedevents.typepad.com

Local Hazelnuts Local hazelnuts make a great gift any time of the year, but somehow they go exceptionally well with the holidays. And wine. You can buy local hazelnuts in a number of varieties from Strohmayer Fruit and Nut Company based in Hillsboro. Try sugar and spice, chocolate clusters, roasted, and raw varieties. The newest products introduced this year include rosemary hazelnuts and a chocolate tree bark with hazelnuts and prunes. All of the fruits and nuts used in the products are from the Lewis Family Farm north of Forest Grove where Strohmayer founder Marghee Lewis-Mercer grew up. She started Strohmayer Fruit and Nut Company - named for the road on which her family farm sits in 2011. Marghee sells her products online but also in local wine shops, coffee shops, and tasting rooms. She offers gift baskets and special orders. www.strohmayerfruitandnut.com

New Suburbia in Beaverton The farm already meets the suburbs in Washington County, so why not have the best of both worlds in your home? You’ll find all the accessories you need to bring the comforts of the country into your suburban life at New Suburbia in historic Downtown Beaverton. It’s “everything you should have inherited from your grandmother but didn’t” explains owner and modern homesteader Dave Hobson. With an inventory of butter churns, cast iron skillets, vintage kitchenware, and beeswax candles, it’s everything the pioneers did right and the perfect shop for those who want to know more about where their food comes from and how it is being treated.

Retro signs are just a few of the treasures you can find at New Suburbia in Downtown Beaverton.

The store also carries everything you need to get started with your own backyard chickens. A variety of chicks are available year-round. The shop carries organic and non-GMO feeds. Plus you can order sturdy chicken coops made locally in Banks. New Suburbia is located across from the Beaverton Bakery at 12170 SW Broadway Street. It’s open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. www.newsuburbiastore.com

Cafe Baghdad One of the newest restaurants in downtown Hillsboro offers all the ease and convenience of a food cart but without the wheels. Northern Iraq native Saddik Soro opened Cafe Baghdad on Main Street last March, bringing the best of Middle Eastern cuisine to the historic district. With $5 lunch specials and quick service, the walkup window at Cafe Baghdad has become a favorite of locals looking to grab a gyro on the go. There are also sidewalk tables and a small covered seating area inside where you can eat. Soro offers options of lamb, beef, chicken, and vegetarian dishes. He makes his own tabouli salad, hummus, and dolmas. Just recently, Saddik also started serving classic breakfast fare. Cafe Baghdad is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It’s located at 315 East Main Street in Hillsboro.

Nutcracker Holiday

The Nutcracker has become an American holiday tradition, and also a tradition for the pre-professional dancers at Northwest Dance Theatre in Tualatin. For the last ten years, the non-profit dance company has been performing an abridged version of the classic ballet, growing the set, costumes, cast, and choreography each year. NWDT’s production - called The Nutcracker Tea - was developed by coartistic directors June Taylor-Dixon and Gretta Murray-Marcheck. This year, the part of Clara will be danced by Rachel David, 15, who started in NWDT’s production years ago as a mouse. Sam Kaltenthaler will dance the Nutcracker,

and Madeleine Cook The Sugar Plum Fairy. Along with the 22 accomplished dancers in the company, The Nutcracker Tea will feature students from June Taylor’s School of Dance and community members. Performances are held at the PCC Sylvania Performing Arts Center. Shows run from December 15 through December 23. Tickets run between $13 and $29 and can be purchased online. www.tickets@nwdt.org NWDT will perform a free special preview at 11 a.m. on December 1 at the Tualatin Library.

Anticipating the 2012 Oregon Pinots Many words have been used recently to describe the 2012 wine grape harvest: epic, one for the record books, a miracle vintage, stunning. Whatever words you choose, the 2012 vintage is one to look forward to and will no doubt be one to remember for many years to come. With the cool, wet spring of 2012, the grapes started out with smaller clusters and a prediction for lower yields. With little to no rainfall from July through harvest in early October, some of the grapes starting shriveling on the vine before they were fully ripe. Many local vineyard operators made the choice to irrigate their crops, giving the fruit a little more time to ripen. Others decided to wait it out, choosing to harvest after the first rains. That natural rebalancing provided by the rain improved the flavors and made the gamble worth it. What does this mean for us as consumers? 2012 could bring the most satisfying Pinot Noir we’ve ever seen. Those with full fruit flavor and those with a more balanced subtlety and flavors that only Oregon Pinot Noir can achieve will be sure to please. Following the low yield harvests in 2010 and 2011, this is a very welcome relief for vineyard owners and winemakers. 2012 will give them the opportunity to rebuild and recover from recent year’s financial shortages. Winemakers may very well end up with Pinot Noir that could both be ready to drink right away or stand the test of time in your cellar. So whether you choose to buy into the hype of 2012 being an epic Oregon Wine year or wait until you taste the proof for yourself, the fact is 2012 is going to raise the recognition of Oregon’s $3 billion wine industry to a new level in the global wine marketplace. Riesling and Pinot Gris are typically released in the spring. Pinot Noir takes a bit longer because of the winemaking process so start to look for the 2012 vintage to be released sometime in late 2013. Matt Souther builds furniture and stuff. Really cool stuff. Though a self-proclaimed “woodshop nerd,” Souther is more of a bandsaw-running hipster ninja who in the last five years has stealthily executed some high-profile design projects you may be familiar with. Most recently, the 40-something design engineer and his crew at Beaverton-based Overkill Design and Creation wrapped up the complete overhaul of the Portland Trailblazer locker room. Souther’s designs are often grandiose displays of carpentry and woodwork and the Blazer locker room redesign was no exception, boasting stainless steel sliding media panels, backlit nameplates, and an illuminated Blazer pinwheel on the ceiling. With his designs, Souther sort of flips a post-modern log cabin inside out, using careful craftsmanship to create robustly practical works of chunky functional furniture art.

Overkill Design

Local design firm makes shoeboxes for sports legends, coffee tables for rockstars, and more.

Office furniture by Overkill Design and Creation

In the last five years at Overkill, Souther has put his drafting and engineering skills to the test while knocking out dozens of projects for cutting-edge local companies like Nike. Souther designed custom boxes to hold Nike shoes for notable celebrities such as Derek Jeter and President Barack Obama. He refashioned gym floors and bleacher seats into office furniture for Nike headquarters and turned doodles on a napkin into full fledged footwear displays. Perhaps his crowning achievement to date, Souther transformed a Winnebago into a retro-style executive conference room. While his most recent design foray has been in the arena of sports, it was a love of music that got Overkill its first big break. Back at the turn of the millennium, when Souther worked with Overkill co-founder Jason Krzmarzick, they pitched an idea to Fender guitars. The guys wanted to use the Fender company logo and unique guitar headstock design to create coffee tables fit for

a rock star. The Telecaster and Stratocaster tables were a hit (and still are), with Overkill getting thousands of domestic and international orders, as well as being featured in the Fender catalog and Maxim Magazine among other media outlets. Souther still loves music. He and Overkill “shop monkey” Dan Stieg play in a Portland-based band called Solid Gold Balls which is set for a show at the Ash Street Saloon on December 18. They call it “family-friendly punk rock” and have a song called “Bacon” among other tracks on a recently released album. So what’s next for Souther, Overkill, and his crew? The guys say they’ve got something big brewing, but they aren’t revealing any details. Whatever it is, it will surely involve ingenuity, fine craftsmanship and Portland style. To learn more about Overkill Design and Creation and see what they are up to, check out their website and follow them on Facebook. www.overkilldesign.com - Cindy Dauer
