Tangatarua Hall of Residence is located next to Waiariki’s Mokoia Campus in Rotorua and offers accommodation for up to 70 students. Situated in a park-like setting with mature landscaping and open spaces, the hall offers students an attractive and affordable residence within walking distance to their courses on campus. The hall is open to all Waiariki students, whether they are from outlying areas and need to move to Rotorua to continue their studies, or international students looking for convenient accommodation. CAFÉS AND RESTAURANT NGĀ WHAREKAI WHARE WĀNANGA The Green Bean Café on Mokoia Campus serves excellent espresso coffees. The Melting Pot restaurant in N Block on Mokoia Campus offers a variety of fresh food – including healthy options – and drinks and coffees at reasonable prices Monday through Friday. Microwaves in this area are available for use, and comfortable indoor seating as well as shaded outdoor seating are provided. CAREERS AND EMPLOYABILITY CENTRE TE P的TAHI WHAKARITE MAHI This new centre assists students in making the transition from study to work. A careers advisor, job shop coordinator and industry placement coordinator will assist students to think critically about their aspirations and what they can do to enhance their employability through job seeker skills, CV preparation, parttime work, industry projects and recruitment opportunities. CHILDCARE CENTRE

Nga Tamariki o Te Waiariki Educare Centre is a privately owned operation situated on Mokoia Campus. The centre offers reasonable rates and Work and Income subsidies are available for fulltime and casual places, plus 20 hours ECE for 3- to 6-year-olds. The centre has two spacious rooms and a large outdoor play area. CONTACT: 07 348 9909


CHINESE LANGUAGE CENTRE TE PŪTAHI REO HAINAMANA In conjunction with the Confucius Institute at Victoria University of Wellington, Waiariki has developed a Chinese language centre on Mokoia Campus to teach anyone interested in the language and culture. Min Zhang, from Institute of Technology of Xuzhou, has a master’s degree in linguistics and has been teaching Chinese to non-native speakers for five years. CONTACT: 0800 924 274, ext. 8674


CLASS REP SYSTEM TE PŪNAHA MĀNGAI KARAIHE Waiariki Institute of Technology Students’ Association (WITSA) encourages students to be active participants in the processes and structures of the institute. Students can do this by becoming a class rep! Students who take on this role represent their peers in meetings and discussion forums to help improve the quality of education and campus life for all students. INTERNET ACCESS AND USAGE Each campus provides computer suites for students to access Office 365, Skydrive, email, internet, applications and printing. Mokoia Campus in Rotorua provides free wireless internet (Wi-Fi) for students’ personal devices. CS@W (COMPUTER SERVICES AT WAIARIKI) Mokoia Campus provides assistance for computer service (PC and laptop) issues or questions. See the IT staff at CS@W in the Te Wairere Library Learning Centre. COPY CENTRE TE PŪTAHI KAPE The Copy Centre is located in I Block on Mokoia Campus. It provides photocopying, printing, binding and laminating services, and sells a variety of paper and card stock – all at discounted rates. CONTACT: 0800 924 274, ext. 8779


COUNSELLING WHAKATOHUTOHU

Counselling is available to all students to assist in any area causing stress that is having an effect on their study. Our counsellor can provide confidential help with coping with change, study and work challenges, managing anxiety and stress, family and relationship issues, decision making, drug and alcohol issues, or just someone to listen and understand. DISABILITY SUPPORT SERVICES AWHINA HAUĀTANGA The Health Centre at Waiariki supports students and staff with disabilities and impairments such as vision, hearing, medical, mental health, physical mobility, specific learning disabilities and learning difficulties. Most buildings are accessible by ramp, and mobility parking spaces are available close to your place of study. The local bus company runs an accessible bus on its “Polytechnic” route. Assistive technology and equipment (i.e., dictaphone, personal listener/ amplifier, notetaker/reader writer) are available to borrow. Learning support referrals, interview and enrolment assistance are also available. FREE BUS TRANSPORT WAKA A PÄ€HÄŞ Your Waiariki student ID card will include a computer-chip embedded smartcard which provides free bus services on Rotorua Cityride routes. GRADUATION WHAKAPĹŒTAETANGA Waiariki’s graduation events celebrate your success. The celebrations start with a formal pohiri and farewell at Tangatarua Marae on Mokoia Campus. There are formal awards ceremonies in Rotorua, Whakatane, Taupo and Tokoroa. This is the highlight of your academic year to celebrate your achievements through the result of your hard work and commitment.

Waiariki is an official IELTS (International English Language Testing System) testing centre. IELTS tests provide proof of English competency for entry into mainstream qualifications at Waiariki and throughout New Zealand. Waiariki offers IELTS preparation classes full time or part time. LEARNER SUPPORT KAITOHUTOHU AKORANGA Waiariki’s team of learning advisors provides free support to all Waiariki students to be successful in their studies and achieve their goals. They work alongside tutors to provide the best possible support for our students’ learning. Students are assisted by learning advisors with: • planning their time • writing assignments • studying for exams We encourage all of our students to reach their full potential by contacting a learning advisor whenever needed throughout the term. ORIENTATION AND INDUCTION WHAKAWAIATANGA ME ARATAKINGA At the beginning of each semester, Waiariki and Waiariki Institute of Technology Students’ Association (WITSA) host Orientation Week, or “O Week,” as it’s commonly called. This is a week of fun events, live music, free food, contests, games, prizes and more. O Week aims to welcome all Waiariki students during their first week of studies. Induction is your introduction to the academic side of student life. In your first few weeks your tutors will take you through a programme to introduce you to the requirements of your course and strategies for success. This includes library and computer services specific to your courses and the support services available to help you throughout your study. SAFETY AND EMERGENCIES AHUATANGA MŌREAREA Health and safety is everyone’s responsibility. Your tutor will explain emergency exits, assembly points and the safety rules in your area. Emergency Evacuation Procedures are posted in all classrooms and throughout campus. You must follow the instructions of the evacuation wardens during any emergency or drill.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS NGĀ KARAHIPI, NGĀ PŪTEA A number of funding opportunities and scholarships are available to assist with your study expenses; some are administered by Waiariki while others are offered through various organisations. Some of the more popular scholarships are listed on our website. Most scholarships are limited and conditions apply, so you are encouraged to apply as early as possible to increase your chances of being awarded. SMOKEFREE IN 2014 TAKIŪRA AUAHIKORE Waiariki wishes to promote an environment that is safe and healthy for all students, staff and visitors, and protect the right of everyone to breathe in clean air. In order to support the New Zealand government’s goal to become a smokefree country by 2025, all Waiariki campuses will become proudly smokefree starting on World Smokefree Day on May 31, 2014. Waiariki’s Health Centre is available to provide free support for students and staff who wish to quit smoking at any time.


STUDENT ID CARDS WHAKAMĹŒHIOTANGA TAUIRA All enrolled Waiariki students whose fees are paid are provided with a programmed smartcard ID which is used for identity and access to buildings, printing and photocopying, and free bus rides on Rotorua Cityride routes. STUDENT LOANS AND ALLOWANCES PŪTEA TĀREWA – TAHUA TAUIRA (HOKONGA AKO) Financial assistance may be available through StudyLink, the agency that administers student loans and allowances, student hardship and bursaries. Avoid delays in your study enrolment process by applying early for funding. Call in to the StudyLink Helpdesk on Mokioa Campus. Dedicated computers and staff are on hand to assist you in applying for a student loan to finance your studies. STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION (WITSA) RŌPŪ TAUIRA Waiariki Institute of Technology Students’ Association (WITSA) provides many services and benefits to Waiariki students, including the class rep system, the Buddy Programme, advice and advocacy, complaints facilitation, and welfare services. There is a common room with microwaves, hot water and telephone and the WITSA shop sells mobile phone top ups, international calling cards, nursing uniforms, fax service, stationery items, laminating, stamps, food and more. TANGATARUA MARAE Waiariki’s vision is focussed on having a strong emphasis on being bicultural, and Tangatarua Marae is a pivotal focal point of the institute. Tangatarua was a Te Arawa ancestor who lived in the area in his time and appropriately his name can be translated as “two peoples”, considered pertinent in view of the institute’s aim of biculturalism. The ancestral meeting house Ihenga is also a Te Arawa ancestor who arrived on the Te Arawa canoe and explored Rotorua soon after, naming the mountains, rivers, lakes and place names within the Rotorua area. All new students are formally welcomed to Waiariki on their first day with a pohiri (traditional Māori welcome ceremony). Waiariki believes a healthy community is a happy and prosperous community. In 2010 the Waiariki Community Recreation Centre – Te Pūtahi Hākinakina o Waiariki opened on Mokoia Campus, with funding assistance from Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust. The $1.5 million facility houses a gym, weights room, squash court and sports hall.
