getting started Getting Started Waiariki Institute of Technology offers three programmes of study to prepare students to continue on to confident and successful tertiary study in their areas of interest. The Certificate in Vocational Skills (Introductory) and the Certificate in Vocational Skills focus on improving students’ numeracy, literacy and study skills. These two programmes provide students with the opportunity to achieve NCEA Level 1 in literacy and numeracy, as well as the chance to tailor their studies toward specific career interests. The Certificate in Smart Study prepares students for further study at diploma and degree levels with advanced study skills courses and the opportunity to follow vocational pathways to tailor their studies toward specific career interests.

Youth Guarantee scheme pays tuition fees Youth Guarantee is a government initiative to support 16- to 19-year-olds to participate in education or training in order to increase skills in our community’s youth. Through the scheme, the government pays for the first year of tertiary fees for these students who enrol at Waiariki. The goal of Youth Guarantee is to see that all young people achieve at least NCEA Level 2 which means they will gain the foundation skills and competencies to further their study pathway and career goals. Specifically tailored foundation programmes cover general literacy and numeracy skills in addition to ‘tasters’ in various trades. Success in these programmes will better prepare students for future success at higher levels of study and help inform decisions around vocational interests. Youth Guarantee students receive extra learning support to improve their literacy and numeracy, individualised learning and career planning advice and support, and participate in national level testing. student PROFILE
Cerise Atareta Doctor
Diploma in Te Reo Māori Cerise Atareta Doctor grew up in a household where te reo Māori was spoken but she wanted to increase her knowledge and understanding and improve her written skills. The 18-year-old Diploma in Te Reo Māori student enrolled at Waiariki Institute of Technology straight out of high school and says she is finding her studies at the Rotorua campus very engaging and stimulating. A women’s sevens rugby representative and a member of Waiariki Academy of Sport, Cerise is especially enjoying learning about and gaining a better understanding of the origins of te reo Māori. In a class of students of all ages and from various backgrounds, Cerise is relishing life as a tertiary student, so much so that she’s already looking at her options for further studies at Waiariki when she finishes her oneyear diploma. “I like learning, and being in a class with people of all ages makes it even more interesting.” Of Te Arawa (Ngāti Raukawa/Ngāti Tūwharetoa) descent, Cerise’s ultimate aim is to become a police officer but taking the advice from her nan, she’s decided to gain some life experience before trying to achieve that goal and expects fluency in te reo Māori to stand her in good stead. “I like the idea of helping out the community, and the intensity and challenges of police work, and I think speaking Māori would definitely help me to be a better police officer.” She says it will also be a backup should she not make it into the police force. If that were to happen, Cerise says, she would pursue a career in teaching the language. “Being able to speak fluent Māori and write it as well will open up a lot of opportunities for me.”
MĀORI STUDIES There is a strong demand for employees with experience in the area of Māori development both within the Waiariki region and throughout New Zealand, and there are endless career options for graduates who have a passion for the development of Māori people. With the settlement of Treaty of Waitangi claims, Māori organisations will increasingly rely on competent managers, team leaders and staff at all levels in order to operate efficiently and successfully. ENSURING YOUR SUCCESS Free buses All enrolled Waiariki students are eligible for free transport to and from Mokoia Campus in Rotorua. Rotorua students use their computer-chipped Waiariki student ID card to travel on all Rotorua Cityride routes seven days a week until the card expires. Free transport to and from Mokoia and Waipa campuses is available from Taupo, Tokoroa, and Whakatane campuses Monday through Friday. Health Centre An occupational health nurse provides a range of free and confidential services at Mokoia Campus including health screening (i.e., blood pressure, weight, hearing, blood sugar tests), health monitoring and support for medical conditions (i.e., diabetes, hypertension, asthma, epilepsy, etc.), sexual health services, treatment for injuries and wounds, and smoking cessation assistance. Students on campuses in Taupo, Tokoroa and Whakatane, contact the receptionist for assistance. Learning Advisors Waiariki’s team of learning advisors provides free support to all Waiariki students to be successful in their studies and achieve their goals. Qualification Details The Bachelor of Teaching Early Childhood Education (Te Reo Māori): Te Tohu Paetahi Whakaako Kōhungahunga (Te Reo Māori) is a professional pre-service qualification preparing its student teachers to be skilled and reflective practitioners who are competent, confident and equipped with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that enable them to teach effectively in a range of early childhood education settings. This aim is aligned to the New Zealand Teachers Council Graduating Teacher Standards in that this qualification will ensure that its student teachers “at the point of graduation will know, understand, be able to do, and have the dispositions that are likely to make them effective teachers” (Teachers Council, 2007). The degree further aims to develop the student teachers’ acceptance and appreciation of the concepts of te ao Māori (Māori world view) and matauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) so they graduate with the knowledge, understanding and commitment to biculturalism as defined by Waiariki Institute of Technology Te Kura Takiura ō Waiāriki Bicultural Framework (Waiariki Institute of Technology, 2011). The qualification embraces Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its intrinsic values of participation and protection based on effective and equitable partnership between Māori and Pākehā, on the recognition and inclusion of both official languages and cultures of Aotearoa/New Zealand and a commitment to fair and just practices, sharing power and resources in an effort to empower both signatories to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Entry Criteria Admission and entry requirements for this qualification are in accordance with Waiariki’s Academic Regulations and the following criteria: Applicants must be 17 years old or older; Applicants under 20 years old must meet academic requirements for New Zealand University Entrance or equivalent; Applicants must have evidence of academic ability (success at NZQA Level 4 or equivalent) and ability to succeed. This may be demonstrated through personal references or testimonials of life and work experience; Applicants must pass a literacy and numeracy test or provide other evidence demonstrating ability to NCEA Level 2 or equivalent in literacy and numeracy; and Applicants must demonstrate competency equivalent to NCEA Level 3 in te reo Māori.
