FORESTRY OPERATIONS

staff profile Bill Tiopira

Certificate in Forest Operations Like many teenagers, secondary school held little interest for Bill Tiopira. So, starting at 13 years old, Bill’s uncle took him out to the Kaingaroa Forest during school holidays where he was taught pruning and thinning. By his 16th birthday, Bill was working full time in the forest. Eventually, an interest in education surfaced and Bill left the bush to study toward a Bachelor of Māori Studies. But when tragedy struck and Bill’s house suffered severe damage from flooding he was forced to drop out of his university studies and try to find work to save his home. “I was disappointed as I really wanted to finish my degree, but the family home came first.” Close friend and forest operations tutor at Waiariki Institute of Technology, Mack Hudson, encouraged Bill to apply to teach forest operations for Waiariki. Impressed by his experience, HOD Richard Stringfellow hired him to work in the Ruatoki area. “With his experience, Bill fit our criteria perfectly,” Richard says. “And since then he’s proven to be an excellent choice.” Bill has been surprised and pleased by how much he has enjoyed his return to the forest industry. “I love training young people and I love seeing them get work in the logging industry,” Bill says. “I can relate to my students. We come from the same place, have similar backgrounds. I know what it’s like to not be interested in school. And now, maybe I can help.”

FOREST MANAGEMENT

graduate profile Larissa Anderson

Diploma in Forestry Operations Larissa Anderson is following in the steal-capped boot prints of her father as she pursues a career in forestry. The 24-year-old fell in love with the industry during holidays working for her dad, a silviculture contractor. Helping her dad used to be punishment for bad behaviour but as a teenager, Larissa came to enjoy her “character building” time in the forest and as a young adult has decided she wants to work in the industry. She has already completed the Diploma in Forestry Operations from Waiariki Institute of Technology, and has continued her studies, now working toward the Diploma in Forest Management. The fact that forestry remains a male-dominated industry hasn’t put Larissa off and she’s not the only female forestry student at Waiariki. “I love being out in the field. I used to work as a personal assistant so I’ve gone from wearing high heels to wearing gumboots – they’re much more comfortable.” Larissa is already showing a lot of promise, having been awarded the Forest Institute of New Zealand’s Mary Sutherland Scholarship for top polytechnic student in her first year. The $1,000 scholarship has proven to be a morale booster as well as a financial boost. Larissa wants to one day be a forest consultant with her own business and perhaps eventually take over her dad’s business. “There are a lot of opportunities in forestry which I don’t think a lot of people realise. It’s not just about planting and chopping down trees.”

FOREST MANAGEMENT Forestry is New Zealand’s third largest goods sector behind dairy and meat. Continued growth is expected over the next 15 years, with demand for qualified forest managers increasing.

Skills and interests you may already have: A love of the outdoors and good people skills Knowledge of plants, trees and natural resources

Ability or interest in working with machinery and technology

We look forward to teaching you: Team building and leadership Legislation affecting forestry Regional forestry analysis Forest industry structure Plant nutrition, wood science Surveying using survey tools, Geographic

Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) Objectives of forest harvesting and harvest planning, and environmental management systems

What industry opportunities are there? With an increase in wood volume availability over the next few years, the demand for forest managers, supervisors and forestry technicians is growing throughout the country. Forestry jobs can include working with indigenous (native) or commercial (plantation) forests where you may undertake: Planting and tending of forests (silviculture) Harvesting and transporting of forest products Planning and management of forests, staff and contractors Conservation or research work Men, and increasingly women too, come into forestry from all walks of life. There are no barriers. To work outdoors in some pretty amazing locations, forestry isn’t just a career, it is a lifestyle choice!

WOOD MANUFACTURING

GRADUATE PROFILE

Manjinder Singh Khehra

Diploma in Manufacturing Moving to a new country and speaking a different language is not easy for anyone. Leaving your family behind is even more difficult. But for Manjinder Singh Khehra, Diploma in Manufacturing graduate, the hardship was worth the payoff, he says. “I have a responsibility for my wife and children. I wanted to settle down in a good country with a good environment. New Zealand has a great reputation and I want to give my wife and family the best opportunities possible.” While living back in his hometown of Amridsar in India, Manjinder had heard of Waiariki Institute of Technology and was eager to enrol. “I just wanted to come to a reputable school for an education. I wanted to gain a qualification from a place that an employer would recognise.” With a Bachelor of Science and a Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Applications, Manjinder thought his technical background would suit the study of wood manufacturing. He was definitely on track with his thinking, and, with the guidance of his wood manufacturing tutor, Manjinder excelled at his studies and started job hunting after graduation. “I want to start at the base in the industry, use all my technical skills, and work my way up. I’m ready to give them my best.”

wood manufacturing Do you enjoy working with your hands and want to challenge your intellect? Do you have practical skills that you want to use to get started in a sustainable career in a manufacturing industry? Solid wood processing is the remanufacturing of a renewable timber resource into value added products for local and international markets. In the Central North Island the timber processing industry is second only to dairy for manufacturing products that are exported. New Zealand companies invest large sums of money every year into leading edge technology, computer driven scanning, cutting, sorting and decision making equipment and tools. Wood manufacturing is a vibrant, highly technical and challenging industry and at the centre of it all is Rotorua. The type of work you could find yourself doing:

We look forward to teaching you: Understanding different types of wood Managing and planning production

What industry opportunities are there? There is a huge range of jobs within the wood industry providing the option to work both indoors and out. A good percentage of industry managers are those who started at the bottom and worked their way up, gaining further skills required to carry out their job and manage people as they go. Continuous training is important to keep up with technology and keep skills up to date.

Managing and supervising employees and the production process Maintenance jobs like saw doctoring which includes the maintenance of all saws used in the sawmills Optimising machinery and equipment to achieve maximum efficiencies Engineering, computer programming, scheduling production If you’re looking for variety, a range of employment opportunities and advancements, wood manufacturing is a job for the future!

graduate profile Rowan Monk

Rowan Monk has spent the majority of his life in the forest industry. Furthering his education at Waiariki’s School of Forestry and Primary Industries helped him when he truly needed it, he said. “I ran my own business in the forest industry where I had been a forestry contractor for a few years. I had an accident at work that changed my life forever. It meant I had to change what I knew, which was hard physical labour, and find something I could handle post-accident, which was more sedentary.” A graduate of the Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety and the Diploma in Forestry, Rowan is currently working as the health, safety, training and recruitment officer for CNI Forest Management Ltd in Rotorua where he has definitely put his Waiariki qualifications and his own experience to good use. When asked what has been most valuable for him during his studies, Rowan remarked, “Just having an understanding of what I do and why. As I have many years of experience, it is great to be able to really understand why we do what we do. It enhances my knowledge considerably.”
