Waiariki Academy of Sport A place where young talented athletes can prioritise their sport

Modelled on the New Zealand Academy of Sport System

Waiariki Academy of Sport was launched in 2007 to provide an environment where young, talented athletes of the region can prioritise their sport whilst also gaining a tertiary qualification.

The academy is modelled on High Performance Sport New Zealand’s (HPSNZ) system that delivers support to New Zealand’s most elite athletes. The academy bridges the gap between when athletes leave secondary school and when they reach the fully supported HPSNZ system.

Sport science and medicine support for athletes are managed by the Academy of Sport staff. Services include individual programme planning, testing, and prescription in areas such as exercise physiology, physical training and conditioning, and nutrition. Academy staff work with the athletes, their individual coaches, and their mentors to provide complete support through training and competition. Now sport- and fitness-minded students can study two new qualifications, the Diploma in Applied Sport and Exercise Leadership (Sport Management and Coaching) and the Certificate in Applied Sport and Exercise Studies (Sport Management and Coaching). These qualifications provide industryrelevant skills for running and managing sporting events or facilities, coaching or managing a team, developing recreational events such as tournaments, and more.

2015 Scholarships and Admissions The Academy of Sport welcomes enquiries and applications from young talented athletes in any sport. A range of scholarships are available to support students. Visit http://waos.waiariki.ac.nz or email sport@waiariki.ac.nz for more information.

Waiariki Academy of Singing and Music was launched in February 2011. Highly successful as a scholarship-based academy, it has continued to grow and now offers students the opportunity of full-time study toward two music qualifications. The Certificate in Contemporary Music Performance is a great place to start. This one-year Level 4 qualification consists of one-on-one music tuition, band rehearsals and performances, and a mix of theory and practical activities with a strong emphasis on preparing students for the entertainment industry. The certificate combines practical musicianship and music theory. Upon completion of this qualification, students will be encouraged to continue their pathway in music study by enrolling in the Level 5 Diploma in Contemporary Music Performance. The courses are taught by staff with extensive experience working with singers and musicians at the highest level in the industry both nationally and internationally.

= NCEA Level 1

For most jobs or careers, you’ll need to further your education after school through tertiary study or training on the job.

Level 2 Level 3

Vocational Pathways is a government initiative that provides the tools to help you develop a career map and plan what you may need to study to meet your goals and move into further study or the workforce. Using the vocational pathways tools, you can identify the type of job you would like and identify the courses and subjects you will need to take to get there. Every study option is colour coded to one of six vocational sectors so it’s easy to see at a glance which industry or careers you can work toward.

Manufacturing and technology

To get started, visit www.youthguarantee.net.nz. The ‘Profile Builder’ provides information about jobs and study options, and the ‘Occupation Outlook’ shows where the real job opportunities are.

Automotive Computing Engineering and Welding

The six sectors are listed to the right and indicate Waiariki’s study options.

construction and infrastructure

Carpentry Electrical Environmental Studies Interior Design

These vocational pathways have been developed by businesses and industry to improve the link between education and employment. They will help you, as a student, see how your learning and achievement will be valued when you start your career.

PriMary industries

Achieving success in a vocational pathway means that as a student you have developed skills and knowledge in areas that employers value and are relevant to their industries. Vocational pathways provide new ways to achieve NCEA Level 2, the foundation for success in further education and employment. By achieving enough credits from the standards recommended by the sector, you can have your NCEA Level 2 endorsed by one or many vocational pathways. This makes it easy for employers to see you have the strengths and abilities for which they are looking. If you are aiming for a career in a particular sector, the vocational pathway can help you see which subjects and standards you should do to get to where you want to go. If you are undecided on a career but thinking about the future, the pathways can help see how your strengths and interests match up to an amazing range of jobs and study options available.

Business Management

Are you a natural people person and a born organiser? Can you juggle multiple tasks and keep a cool head under pressure?

Imagine yourself leading a company to great successes.

Quality business administrators are vital to the efficient running of most businesses and as the reliance on technology continues to expand, the role has evolved to take on more responsibilities such as training and orientation for new staff, conduct research on the internet, and operate and troubleshoot new office technologies in addition to the core responsibilities of storing, retrieving and integrating information for distribution to staff and clients.

An effective manager is someone with leadership skills who can make decisions, plan and organise. Leadership means setting standards and living up to them, and showing others how to do the same. Management in all business activity is the act of getting people together to accomplish desired goals and objectives.

forestry and primary industries CAREERS Agriculture, Biotechnology, Horticulture, Sustainability If you enjoy working with your hands, in a variety of settings undertaking various activities, where no two days are the same, you may be suited for a landbased career.

Forest Management, Forestry Operations, Wood Manufacturing New Zealand’s plantation forests are expected to grow in value over the next 10 to 15 years. Forest managers look after entire forests and provide logistical support and quality control. Forestry operations workers convert trees into logs, preparing the primary product for the next stage of sawmilling. Solid wood processing is the remanufacturing of a renewable timber into products for national and international markets.

Occupational Health and Safety Ensuring safety standards are maintained in the workplace is a vital skill. Employees who follow safety procedures remain well and productive on the job, and suffer fewer work-related accidents and injuries.

career outlook Dairy farmers and farm managers are key players in New Zealand’s number one export product. Biotechnologists are involved in fermentation, bio-manufacturing, food manufacture and biosecurity. Production managers organise and control the production of goods in a factory, ensuring products are made to the right specifications, ready on time and within budget. Health and safety advisers monitor workplace health and safety hazards, train employees on health and safety procedures, and investigate accidents.

Waiariki strives to provide excellent educational options for its students and part of that strategy includes the provision of quality and purpose-fit teaching spaces and a vibrant, healthy campus atmosphere. In February 2012, Waiariki replaced older buildings it had outgrown with a $4.5 million teaching block near Tangatarua Marae. Named Te Tāhuhuroa o Ihenga, which translates to “the extended backbone of Ihenga”, it is the new home of the growing Te Pākaro a Ihenga: Faculty of Health, Education and Humanities. The 1,800-square-metre building features 12 classrooms, a 200-seat lecture theatre, staff offices and a small kitchen facility. The classrooms seat 20 to 25 with adjoining walls that can be removed to increase capacity. The lecture theatre can similarly be split into two rooms.

nursing and health CAREERS NURSING Nursing is one of the fundamental professions in healthcare throughout the world. It can be a rewarding career both personally and professionally as it makes a difference in people’s lives. Registered nurses with experience are able to progress to senior nurse or nurse manager positions and specialise in areas such as aged care, community health, emergency care, perioperative, and more.

Health and sport Studies If you have an interest in other dimensions of wellness, healthcare and fitness, Waiariki’s health studies qualifications include areas of education for nurses and non-nurses alike. This could include infection prevention and control, health and rehabilitation, and health education. Our new applied sport certificate and diploma have already proven very popular for those interested in a career in sport management and coaching.

career outlook Registered nurses (RNs) assess, treat and care for patients in hospitals, primary health organisations such as doctors’ practices and family planning clinics, residential care facilities, Māori health providers, private providers, prisons and in patients’ homes. According to CareersNZ, although the number of RNs has increased, there are still too few experienced RNs to fill all the vacancies in specialist areas such as aged care, critical care and emergency, medical and perioperative. These areas are now on Immigration New Zealand’s longterm shortage list and the government is actively encouraging skilled and experienced nurses from overseas to work in New Zealand. Health services management, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and many other healthcare career areas also have good outlooks according to CareersNZ.

Social Sciences and Teaching Careers social sciences

Early Childhood Education

Social work is a profession devoted to helping people function to the best of their abilities. Social workers are people who care about others, want to make things better and relieve suffering, and who want their work to make a difference in society. This can mean providing therapy directly to people, linking people with community resources such as benefits or accommodation, or working for change to improve social conditions.

Children are curious about each and every thing they see around them. What children learn during childhood remains with them throughout their life so it is vital to impart them with important values, knowledge and skills from a very young age.

Teaching Tertiary Want to work with people who have a thirst for knowledge and wisdom? Teaching is a profession that allows you to work in an environment where you can really make a difference.

career outlook Social workers provide advice, advocacy and support to people with personal and social problems. They also help with community and social issues. According to CareersNZ, there are too few social workers to fill vacancies, which means the role is on Immigration New Zealand’s long-term shortage list. According to Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment estimates, steady growth in the number of early childhood teachers needed is likely to continue, as the government has set a target of 98% of new school entrants having participated in early childhood education by 2015. Demand is particularly strong for early childhood teachers who are speakers of Māori or Pasifika languages.

Engineering and Welding

The automotive industry continuously changes the way we work, live, travel and do business, and a career in this industry is challenging and varied.

An engineering education will exercise your brain, developing your ability to think logically and to solve problems. Welders help make cars, metal appliances, buildings, bridges and planes. Their skills are invaluable and provide people with many modern conveniences.

Carpentry and Electrical If you like working with your hands and seeing your efforts come to fruition, a career in carpentry or the electrical fields can be hugely rewarding and demand for these trades is predicted to increase as the building and construction industry picks up, particularly in Christchurch.

career outlook When the Christchurch rebuild reaches its peak, an estimated 24,000 additional trades workers will be required in Christchurch to keep up with demand. This has led to carpenter being added to Immigration New Zealand’s Canterbury Skill Shortage List. Despite increasing numbers of electricians, demand for them has remained high and this job appears on Immigration New Zealand’s long-term skill shortage list, which means the government is actively encouraging qualified electricians from overseas to work in New Zealand.
