Aotearoa New Zealand The Māori name for New Zealand is Aotearoa, “land of the long white cloud”. New Zealand is an island country in the south-west Pacific comparable in size to the United Kingdom or Japan.

New Zealand Quick Guide:

New Zealand comprises the North and South Islands, and a host of smaller islands. Extensive areas are set aside as national parks. The North Island is mainly rolling hill country, much of which is farmed. The South Island is divided by the Southern Alps, which run most of its length and rise to over 3,000 metres. Nowhere in New Zealand is more than 130 kilometres from the sea.

Geographic land size: 270,000 km2

New Zealand is a peaceful, safe and friendly country, providing exciting lifestyle and adventure opportunities in a multicultural environment. This makes New Zealand a choice place for thousands of students to consider for a quality education. With a population of slightly more than 4.4 million, New Zealand is one of the least crowded places on the planet. It is a modern country with advanced technology, a culture of research and development, with a mixed economy that operates on free market principles. New Zealand is affordable for students to live here and experience the great outdoors and adventure playground, culture and arts, education and student life on and off campus. Its image is that of a clean and green environment, mountains and lakes, cities and beaches, with warm and friendly people. New Zealanders, or “Kiwis” as they are popularly known, enjoy meeting people and learning about various cultures and therefore are warm and welcoming to people who visit or study in New Zealand.

growth demands new facilities

studies is important to Waiariki’s longterm success.

The nursing programme has grown significantly and outgrown its current facilities. Substantial long-term employment growth is projected for the health sector, as well as changing skill requirements. Proposed new building A key aspect of the proposed new nursing building is the development of simulation wards that will emulate health care scenarios and will provide real life training situations for nursing students. Preliminary costs suggest the building and fit-out costs to be approximately $10 million. Teaching spaces Classrooms – four to six 30-seat classrooms In 2013 construction will begin on a new building to replace existing teaching spaces that are limited for the number of students enrolling on nursing and healthcare qualifications. The Bachelor of Nursing continues to be the flagship qualification in Waiariki’s healthcare portfolio with continuing high demand for its delivery. The new building will create significant opportunity to increase collaboration with community. It will also enhance Waiariki’s image as a high quality educator of nurses and potentially increase demand for entry into nursing and healthcare programmes.

The building will house a main reception, staff offices, 160-seat lecture theatre, classrooms and specialist student learning spaces and laboratories.

Clinical lab (ward) – new and innovative ward designs incorporating simulation teaching facilities

The building will also link to Waiariki’s Tangatarua Marae and the newly built central boulevard at the top end of Mokoia Campus. This building will further the progress of a campus master plan developed in 2009.

Lecture theatre – 160 seats

Why a new nursing building?

Preparation and Arrival into New Zealand

Pre-departure Please visit the Waiariki Institute of Technology website to view a copy of the International Pre-departure Handbook which contains a lot of useful information to help you prepare for life in New Zealand. Topics cover immigration and visa information, accommodation, important Waiariki policies, insurance and detailed arrival information. If you have any questions not answered in the pre-departure guide, please feel free to contact the International Centre. Email: international.enquiries@waiariki.ac.nz Web: www.waiariki.ac.nz Arriving in New Zealand Waiariki can arrange to have you picked up from Auckland or Rotorua airports if you request it in advance. The International Team will meet with you on your first day and ensure that you are given all the necessary information you need to begin your study and to settle into Waiariki and Rotorua. Waiariki promotes a bicultural vision and all new students are welcomed at the start of their studies with a pohiri (traditional Māori welcome ceremony) at Tangatarua Marae in February and July. High Quality Education and Support from Waiariki Waiariki is a government owned tertiary education provider registered with the New Zealand Government, and holds Quality Assured status. Waiariki has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Minister of Education. Copies of the code are available from Waiariki or from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at www.minedu. govt.nz/goto/international.

Helpful Tips If you have a driver’s licence, bring it with you – this makes it easier to obtain a New Zealand licence. Bring about six passport size photos with you. Bring your own sports gear, e.g., squash racquet, badminton racquet, etc. These may cost more in New Zealand. The exception is good quality hockey sticks, which are less expensive in New Zealand. Give up smoking before you arrive. In New Zealand it is illegal to smoke in public areas such as restaurants and bars, and homestays will not allow smoking in their homes. Remember there are weight limits for the luggage you can bring to New Zealand without paying excess baggage fees. Bring your national costume for the international events celebrated on campus – very popular entertainment, fun and a cultural extravaganza! Money Bring only a little cash Bring travellers cheques to cover your initial expenses Take out a bank draft/withdrawal for larger sums of money Immigration – Student Visa If you are going to study in New Zealand for more than 12 weeks you will need to apply for a student visa. Full details of immigration requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available from the Immigration New Zealand website at www.immigration.govt.nz.

30 | PREPARATION AND ARRIVAL INTO NEW ZEALAND

Eligibility for Health Services Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health website at www.health.govt.nz. Accident Insurance The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents, and temporary visitors to New Zealand but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at www.acc.co.nz. Medical and Travel Insurance International students, including groups of students, must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while in New Zealand. The cost of medical and travel insurance is $530 per year. Uni-Care is our preferred insurance provider. It is important to understand the inclusions stated in their Policy for the New Zealand Student Plan found at www.uni-care.org. Employment The following websites can be very helpful in finding employment while in New Zealand: www.waiarikistudents.co.nz www.seek.co.nz www.trademe.co.nz www.sjs.co.nz (Student Job Search)

accommodation

Students at Waiariki have the advantage of an excellent education and a quality lifestyle for a comparatively low cost.

Waiariki can help arrange student accommodation while you are here for your studies.

Study Costs

Hall of Residence

Tuition fees (approximate, depending on qualification)........19,500

Cost for one year (40 weeks):

Tangatarua Hall of Residence, owned by Waiariki, is located next to the Waiariki campus in Rotorua. Situated in a park-like setting with mature landscaping and open spaces, the hall offers students an attractive and affordable residence within walking distance to their courses on Mokoia Campus. The hall is open to all Waiariki students. Homestay We recommend the homestay option, especially for students studying English so they will have an opportunity to practice their English in their living situation. A family environment can also ease the adjustment of living in a new country with different food, language and customs. Students should commit to staying at least one month with the homestay family, as it takes some time for you to adjust to life in Rotorua, and for you and your family to adjust to each other. The homestay fee of NZ$195 per week is all inclusive of your own room, most meals, power and laundry, and may include internet access. Waiariki House Waiariki House is a privately owned hostel that is independent from Waiariki Institute of Technology. It provides quality accommodation at reasonable rates. The hostel is located in the heart of Rotorua, just a short walk to many amenities and an easy city bus ride to the Rotorua campus. Visit www.studentaccom.co.nz for more information. Flatting (Sharing a House) In New Zealand the word “flatting” means to rent a house with others (“flatmates”) who may be students or friends. You and your flatmates will be responsible for securing your own furniture, plus sharing the cost of power, water, telephone and other bills, plus cooking your own meals, doing your own laundry and maintaining the rental agreement. Important Information for Enrolment and Study How are New Zealand’s qualifications structured?

ACADEMIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Applicants must be high school graduates with acceptable results in relevant subjects. Special conditions apply to some qualifications and to students under 18 years of age.

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) has: A scale of 10 levels Three-year bachelor’s degrees, starting Year 1 at Level 5 and finishing Year 3 at Level 7

Refer to the 2013 Waiariki Institute of Technology Academic Statute, Version 2, at www.waiariki.ac.nz.

New Zealand’s three-year degree is at the same level as the final three years of a four-year bachelor’s degree in most countries. This is mainly because New Zealand students complete an extra year at high school.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS As an enrolled full-time student, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) requires study visa holders to attend all timetabled/scheduled classes, and to show academic progress if requested by INZ. If you do not comply with these conditions, INZ can revoke your study visa and you will be requested to leave the country.

CODE OF PRACTICE As a signatory to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students, Waiariki may enrol international students aged 14 and older.
