You probably know someone in your surroundings who has suffered a heart attack or cardiac arrest. After all, cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in the Western world. In the Netherlands more than 100 people die every day due to cardiovascular disease. To reduce this number, scientific research is needed. In the Master’s degree program in Cardiovascular Research, you will contribute to this crucial research.

About the program Unique and small scale The Master’s program in Cardiovascular Research at VUmc School of Medical Sciences is the only program of its kind in the Netherlands and one of the few in Europe. Due to the small scale of the program, you will receive personal guidance from the best researchers in the field.
Currriculum During the first year you learn all about the cardiovascular field, including the pathophysiology of the heart and the clinical aspects of cardio vascular diseases. During the second year you focus on your own interests and preferences. There are many possibilities, also for doing a research internship abroad. For example, would you like to do research at Harvard University in the USA? VUmc School of Medical Sciences has connections with such renowned research institutes worldwide.

Practical information The Cardiovascular Research program is challenging, and offers you great opportunities for personal and carreer development. Only 20 students are admitted each year, which means that we have to make a selection of the best applicants.

Amsterdam Amsterdam The capital city of the Netherlands is known for its parks, culture and fun things to do. With your student card you get discount admission to the Zoo. Or you can discover new music at the Paradiso nightclub or simply enjoy a beer on the Leidseplein.
Campus/Uilenstede All degree programs at the VU are located on the campus. That means you’ll have lots of contact with students from other fields. In the summer, the campus is full of students who are studying, having lunch or talking. The student flats are located near the VU campus.
Sports With your student card you can get a discount subscription at the VU Sports Centre. There is also a forest where you can go runing or cycling, and there are facilities for rowing.
