One Hit Wonders

C

omedian Jason Manford once told a story about seeing Chesney Hawkes in concert. He started with The One and Only which got a round of applause. Then, pausing before saying 'For my next song', Jason said people were muttering, saying, 'He has another one?'

Audrey Hepburn film to a new generation. In 1980 The Buggles had a massive hit with Video Killed the Radio Star. Lead singer Trevor Horn is now a top record producer and I think that the song still sounds great. The Knack (1979) had a big hit with My Sharona, a song built around a very good jerky guitar riff. Lead singer Doug Fieger wrote this for his girlfriend Sharona Alperin. The band Weatus scored a number one hit with Teenage Dirtbag in 2000. Sadly they have never been able to replicate this achievement. Norman Greenbaum certainly doesn't sound like a pop star but his song, Spirit in the Sky (1969) still gets played on the radio.

For my next song I’m going with Breakfast at Tiffany's by Deep Blue Something (1995) a very good pop song and maybe brought the classic

Four Non-Blondes were from San Francisco and in 1993 released a song called What's Up. A great tune and none of the four girls were blonde.

13

14

In 1985 Mike Scott from the Waterboys penned the superb Whole of the Moon. A song that features the great line, 'I saw the crescent but you saw the whole of the moon. My next choice is Birdhouse in Your Soul (1989) by They Might Be Giants. The video didn't make any sense and the lyrics had lines like, Say I’m the only Bee in Your Bonnet. However the tune was great so that's good enough for me. My final song is Brimful of Asha (1997) by Cornershop. Initially the song wasn't played on the radio until DJ and producer Norman Cook heard it. He gave the song a great remix and the rest is history. MusicMan

Local History Bottle Ovens Experts calculate that in the heyday of the pottery industry there were up to four thousand bottle kilns and as many as two thousand still standing in the 1950s. The clean air act sounded the death-knell for the smoky, coal fired ovens as the factories turned to gas and electricity. There are forty seven bottle ovens still standing and they are all listed buildings. No two bottle ovens are exactly alike. They were all built according to the whim of the builder or the potbank owner.

Some small factories had only one oven, larger ones had as many as twenty five. The outer part of an oven is known as the 'hovel'. This

of elderly men who still possessed the skills required, together with a massive team of younger volunteers set about the last firing.

shape with its wide base and narrow neck evolved to accommodate the firing chamber together with room for men, materials and equipment. The tapering chimney was better for creating draught which aided the firing process and helped to take away the smoke. The smoke however, was thick and black, local bylaws, passed in 1877 stated that hovels should be not less than sixty feet high. However there are many photographs showing an almost permanent fog over the potteries caused by the kilns. On August 26th 1978 the last ever firing of a potteries bottle kiln took place. David Sekers, director of Gladstone Pottery Museum and a driving force behind the event said, ‘The first time in twenty years and the last time in history'. Twelve tons of coal was used from Florence pit and a group

The fired burned in the kiln for around two days, then after cooling for several hours the historic fired samples were removed and are now on display in Gladstone museum.

What is Mindfulness?

M

indfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the

present experience. It isn’t more complicated than that. It is opening to or receiving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it.

Sylvia Boorstein

This Month’s Mindful Moments When we get too caught up in the busyness of the world, we lose connection with one another - and ourselves. Jack Kornfield As soon as we wish to be happier, we are no longer happy. Walter Landor You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment. Fools stand on their island of opportunities and look toward another land. There is no other land; there is no other life but this. Henry David Thoreau

I Do Like To Be Besides The Seaside Back in the sixties our annual holiday would normally be to Colwyn Bay in north Wales. As we lived near to Stoke station we were able to walk the short distance with our cases. The resort had a sandy beach and most days if the weather was good would be spent sunbathing, making sand castles, and a quick paddle if we could brave the cold sea. There were a few amusement arcades and sometimes our dad would take me and my sis in to an arcade to spend a few pennies. I used to like the roll-a-penny, to win, the coin had to land between the two black lines. The other one we always headed for was the coinpusher. They normally had a large pile of pennies at the front, right on the edge about to drop but of course they never did. I remember one time our dad getting really frustrated as he had put a large quantity of pennies in and had hardly won anything, so he took matters into his own hands and gave the machine a shove. Sure enough a number dropped. He then tried a second time only to be tapped on the shoulder by the arcade owner who asked us to leave.

16

As we left dad said to the guy he wouldn't be coming back as all his machines were fixed

anyway. My sis and I found it all highly amusing and it still makes us both smile when we think of it. The mountains above Colwyn had a zoo with a wide variety of animals and most years we would visit. Rhos-on-Sea is close to Colwyn Bay and is still famous for the Harlequin Puppet Theatre. As a child I always loved marionettes and so for me a visit was always a highlight of my holidays. Llandudno is only five miles from Colwyn and taking a tram ride to the top of the Great Orme is another happy memory I have. Finally, on the last day of our hols our parents would take us to the small fun fair. There was a child sized Ferris wheel, dodgem cars, a merry-goround and some stalls. I loved the dodgems, though it could be a bit hairy if older boys were riding as they would take

great delight in crashing into me at great speed. Those were great times

Serves 3-5 INGREDIENTS 1 small onion chopped 1 medium sweet potato peeled and cubed 1 clove garlic crushed ½ tsp hot chilli powder (optional) ½ tsp ground coriander (optional) 1 large carrot peeled and sliced ½ a small cauliflower cut into florets ½ a small broccoli cut into florets 800ml vegetable stock Salt and pepper 75ml double cream METHOD In a large pan gently fry the onion until it is softened. Add the sweet potato and gently fry for three minutes. Now add the garlic and spices (if using) and fry for a further minute. Add the carrot, cauliflower and broccoli to the pan. Now add the vegetable stock. Bring to the boil and then simmer for twenty minutes. Take the pan off the heat. Next using either a food processor or stick blender, whizz the soup until it is smooth. You may find you need to do this in a couple of batches. Return the soup to the pan, season with salt and pepper and reheat until just boiling. Take the pan off the heat. When slightly cooled add the cream and give the soup a good stir. Have a go at making this recipe, it really is delicious.
