Also known as Quinta do Sacramento or Quinta da Macieirinha, this late 18th-century country house was acquired by the Porto City Council in 1972 to create a museum dedicated to Romanticism. The presence of the Douro River, the paths and the surrounding gardens of the house take us to the romantic era. This museum is intended to be a place where Romanticism is approached in its multiple expressions, from literature to cinema, from painting to music, and in its temporal persistence, from the Romantic period to the contemporary times.

MUSEUMS OF PORTO

07 Museu da Farmácia do Porto

Museu da Cidade The Reservatório - Museu da História da Cidade is located in the Pasteleira Park and in the amazing and magnificent space of an old water tank. It will open in the last quarter of 2020 to tell the material history of the city, its foundations, its walls and squares, the river that runs through it, its streets and monuments, the evolution of its urban fabric and its successive existences, thought out and built by the hands of draughtspeople and builders. There, the most diverse materials from different periods coexist with audiovisual devices and different types of images, to show us how PortuCale, the city that gave its name to Portugal, became Porto.

Opening October 2020

Museu da Farmácia has a collection that spans millions of years of universal history on health and disease. The collection brings together objects of rare historical, artistic, anthropological and scientific value from civilizations and cultures as distant in both time and space such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Incas, the Aztecs, Islam, Africa, Tibet, China, Japan, and many more. Besides the heritage on display, we can visit the excellent Farmácia Estácio from Porto, which was located on Rua Sá da Bandeira, and also an Islamic Pharmacy, coming from inside a palace of the Ottoman Empire, located in Damascus in the 19th century.

Visiting Museu do Carro Elétrico you can see a collection of unique trams and other auxiliary vehicles that used to run in Porto and that left a mark on the history of light urban rail transport in the city. We highlight the “Americano” animaldrawn tramcar from the USA, the first to operate on the Iberian Peninsula on rails. In this space you can enjoy an example of industrial architecture, where you still find old machines and part of the evolution of this former Massarelos Thermoelectric Power Station. The building, a listed building of municipal interest, is still linked to the production and transformation of the electric energy that feeds the current electric traction network. The Museum also offers different programmes of entertainment and educational services, as well as renting special trams and holding events in its spaces.

Fundação de Serralves is a cultural institution with a contemporary vision of Art and Landscape, being recognized as one of the main Portuguese cultural institutions. The entire landscape and architectural heritage of the Foundation was designated a National Monument in 2012 and consists of the Contemporary Art Museum, Casa do Cinema Manoel de Oliveira (both designed by Architect Álvaro Siza), Casa de Serralves (a unique Art Deco example), and the Parque de Serralves (18 hectares), which was recently joined by the groundbreaking Treetop Walk project: a highlevel walkway next to the treetops.

Casa-Museu Fernando de Castro

Centro Português de Fotografia

It was the residence of Fernando de Castro (1889–1946), a trader, poet, caricaturist and above all a collector, who became interested in the most diverse forms of art. It has filled his house with paintings, sculptures and particularly wood carvings with which he has decorated its entire interior, giving it an absolutely singular look. The library, where works with a bibliographic value can be found, gives us an idea of the diversity of his interests. Having died without a will, his sister and heiress, Maria da Luz de Araújo e Castro, made a donation to the State of all this estate under the name of Casa-Museu Fernando de Castro, which is administratively dependent on the Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis since its foundation in 1952.

Near the Cathedral (Sé), in the Historic Centre of Porto, a World Heritage Site, is the longest stratigraphic sequence of human occupation in Porto is preserved, remains that are a testament to the long diachrony of the cluster, dating back to the first millennium BC. In just three meters deep were found twenty archaeological layers, include architectural ruins and objects from the fifth and fourth centuries BC to the present day. The archaeological dig carried out at the site in 1984-87 was instrumental in knowing the history of the city by identifying for the first time remains of the proto-historic castro (fortified village) and the Roman city (Cale) that followed, and the Swabian-Visigoth and early medieval ages, when Portucale was elevated to a diocese (late 6th century). The stratigraphic evidence and the chronological sequence of the remains led to make the archaeological site open to visitors.

The history of the construction of the Paço do Bispo takes us to the 13th century, extending to the 19th century. Six hundred years of history marked by several remodellings and constructions, which defined its architectural design. In 1734, Nicolau Nasoni was hired to carry out a remodelling project of the Palace. It seems, that the magnificent granite staircase involved and plays with the light and colour created by the dome’s skylight and the noble halls of the building, was designed by Nasoni. This palace, as we know it today, features a latebaroque architecture with a fusion in rococo and neoclassical. Paço do Bispo, by opening its doors to the public in 2016, has shorten the proximity between various worlds: the clerical and the lay, religion and art, culture and tourism.

Percurso Museológico de São Francisco de Assis The city’s most important Gothic temple, whose construction began in the fourteenth century. It is one of the most important works of the Baroque, with its gilded interior, from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It was the exuberance of its gilt carved woodwork that led Count Raczinsky to describe it as the ‘golden church’. And dazzled, he stated: “The gilt of this church is so rich and beautiful that goes beyond everything I have seen in Portugal and all over the world.” Noteworthy is the Tree of Jesse, as well as the Cemetery in the Catacombs. It is a National Monument since 1910 and a UNESCO’s World Heritage Site since 1996.
