You can enjoy an interesting itinerary to the Romanesque monuments of Lleida, the most outstanding of which are to be found in the Vall de Boí , VIELHA whose nine temples: L’Assumpció de Cóll; Santa Maria de Cardet; Sant Tredòs Feliu de Barruera; the church of La Nativitat and hermitage of Sant Quirc Escunhau in Durro; Santa Eulàlia d’Erill-la-Vall; Sant Joan de Boí; and Santa Maria and Sant Climent in Taüll, have been declared a UNESCO (World Heritage Erill-la-Vall Site) . These outstanding buildings are significant for both their architectonic Barruera structures and polychrome murals and wood carvings. Sant Pere del Burgal Boí Sant Joan d’Isil Cardet The Centre for Interpreting the Romanesque Art and Architecture of the Ribera de Cardós Vall de Boí, which can be found near the church in Erill-la-Vall, is the Taüll València d’Àneu main centre that provides visitors with thematic information and Durro PALLARS Alins Cóll organises activities associated with the valley’s Romanesque heritage. Coll de Nargó TREMP SOLSONÈS In La Noguera, the most important buildings include the collegiate church of Sant Castell de Mur Pere d’Àger and the group of 23 hermitages and churches in La Baronia de Rialb. Olius SOLSONA In El Pallars Jussà, the most outstanding monuments are: the castle and collegiate Àger NOGUERA church of Santa Maria de Mur; the church at Covet; and the castle of Llordà. In El Ponts Artesa de Segre Pallars Sobirà, the most significant architectural treasures are the monastery of Santa Maria de Gerri de la Sal and the church of Son, in València d’Àneu. La Segarra Massoteres boasts Sant Pere el Gros in Cervera, Sant Pere de Talteüll and the church of Sant Agramunt BALAGUER Pelagalls Esteve de Pelagalls. In El Segrià, the star attractions are the Seu Vella (Old Cathedral), URGELL Montfalcó Murallat PLA the church of Sant Martí and the Palau de la Paeria (City Hall). In El Solsonès visitors TÀRREGA D’URGELL should look out for the cathedral of Santa Maria and the Museu Diocesà i Comarcal (Diocese CERVERA Sant Guim de Freixenet LLEIDA Mollerussa SEGARRA and Local District Museum) of Solsona and also the church of Sant Esteve d’Olius. In L’Urgell LES BORGES has the monastery of Vallbona de les Monges and Santa Maria d’Agramunt. In Les Garrigues, the BLANQUES Vallbona de les Monges most significant buildings include the churches of Granyena and Vinaixa. In the comarca (local district) Fulleda of La Cerdanya, which offers 7 routes, the highlights are the church of Santa Maria de Talló, which is better SEGRIÀ Cervià de les Garrigues Vinaixa known to locals as the “Cathedral of La Cerdanya”, and the churches of Sant Esteve de Guils, Santa Maria de GARRIGUES Músser and Santa Eugènia de Nerellà. There is a relative lack of large-scale Romanesque structures in La Cerdanya, but a group of relatively similar smaller buildings, whose most significant examples include the seat of the former religious community of Santa Maria de Talló and the parish church of Sant Pere d’Alp. (Romanesque Way) is a cross-border route that takes in the Romanesque structures of the Pyrenees between Perpinyà, in the comarca of El Rosselló in France, and Bassella, in the south of L’Alt Urgell. This route runs from the Mediterranean coast to the flat lands of western Catalonia and crosses the comarques of El Rosselló, El Conflent, La Cerdanya and L’Alt Urgell. Salardú

This route takes in three very original museums in El Pallars: the Museu de La Conca Dellà, in Isona; the Museu dels Raiers (River Rafters’ Museum), at El Pont de Claverol and the Ecomuseu de les Valls d’Àneu, in Esterri d’Àneu. The Museu de La Conca Dellà offers a trip through the world of the dinosaurs and guided visits to the Cretaceous remains of La Posa, where it is possible to see footprints left by dinosaurs in prehistoric times. In the open-air museum at Coll de Nargó, visitors can see remains including dinosaur nests and footprints and fossilised vegetation. The Museu dels Raiers explains the lost profession of river rafting and explains the process of working wood and which tools were used. The main component of the Ecomuseu dels Valls d’Àneu is Casa Gassia; this building provides an insight into traditional mountain life, which is explained through its rooms. Other sites that form part of this Ecomuseum include the Saw Mill of Alós and a group of historical structures at Son. Visitors are also recommended to visit Peramea, Llagunes and the Museu de la Fusta (Wood Museum) of Àreu.

This route takes visitors on a journey of discovery that looks back to the origins of Catalonia. It runs through 11 of the old “comtats” (counties or earldoms), examining curious and significant details. It starts with Guifré el Pelós (William the Hairy), back in the 9th century, and goes through to the 15th century, when the dynasty of counts that had governed Catalonia for over 500 years came to an end. The majority of the elements that form part of this route belong to the 11th, 12th and 13thcenturies; they include a selection of monuments, museums and groups of other emblematic medieval constructions which are located in or near natural settings and unique scenery. There are several variations of this route, which can be walked in 5 days or discovered in a series of short outings. With the help of some of history’s main protagonists, the route reveals: the tremendous power wielded by some noblewomen; different religious beliefs; the significance of imagery in medieval times; the first written texts in the Catalan language; and many battles, defences and struggles for power. A route through Les Garrigues that takes in shelters and constructions in and around Castelldans, Les Borges Blanques, Vinaixa and L’Albi. This route offers an itinerary that visits a number of dry stone constructions that are scattered between Les Borges Blanques, L’Albi, Vinaixa and Castelldans. This 55 km route visits 9 of the approximately 1,100 vaulted shelters that have been catalogued in the comarca (local district), as well as other stone constructions that were made to collect rain water. The route begins at Castelldans and continues towards Les Borges Blanques, where three more constructions have been signposted, as well as a “cogulla” (rectangular water deposit). The next destination is Vinaixa, where there are three more shelters and an “aljub” (hole in the rock for storing water), before the route finally ends at L’Albi with a visit to two more buildings.

This route, which runs through 65 municipal areas in the comarques of L’Alt Camp, La Conca de Barberà and L’Urgell, visits the 12th century monasteries of Santes Creus, Poblet and Vallbona de les Monges. These monasteries, which form part of one of the most important groups of currently active Cistercian communities in Europe, also possess one of the most important artistic, cultural and historical legacies to be found in these inland comarques. The Cistercian order was founded in France, in the year 1098, by a group of monks who swore to observe the Rule of Sant Benedict: prayer, work (Ora et Labora), austerity, meditation and poverty.

This Cathar Route, which is known as “The Way of the Good Men”, is a 189 km tourist itinerary that runs from the sanctuary of Queralt to the castle of Montsegur (in France); it can be followed by mountain bike, on foot, or on horseback. The Way of the Good Men forms part of the GR-107 Long Distance Path and offers the possibility to retrace the migratory routes used by the Cathars between the 12th and 14th centuries when they fled persecution from the Crusade and the Inquisition. The route allows visitors to discover medieval villages, Romanesque churches and castles. As well as the historical angle, the route also passes through the protected area of the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park. This allows visitors to contemplate delightful scenery and to visit settlements full of beauty and tradition, such as Gósol. From this village, a variant of The Way of the Good Men leads to Josa de Cadí, Tuixent, La Coma, Sant Llorenç de Morunys, Coll de Jou, Odèn, Timoneda, Lladurs and Solsona, and finally to the Miracle Shrine. One of the most spectacular monument itineraries running through the city of Lleida is the one that allows visitors to discover the most emblematic treasures of the city: the Seu Vella (Old Cathedral) and the Palau de la Paeria(City Hall). The latter is one of the most important examples of Romanesque-style civil architecture in Catalonia. It is the seat of the Ajuntament de Lleida (City Council) and contains important monumental remains, dating from the 5th century BCE to the 18th century, as well as the Municipal Archive and the Saló del Retaule (Altarpiece Hall). The Plaça Sant Joan square –which is presided over by a Neo-Gothic style church of the same name– is a popular meeting point for local citizens and combines traditional taste with modern urban planning. The Seu Vella hill, which offers the best vantage point for viewing the city, is surrounded by the largest walled perimeter in Europe. It hosts La Suda (a former Moorish fort) and the Seu Vella: a magnificent group of Romanesque-Gothic structures that includes a temple, cloister and bell-tower.

Secret Lleida is a route that allows visitors to discover the Roman and medieval remains of the old city. There are also remnants of walls, churches and Moorish baths and even a medieval prison, all of which have survived the passage of time and are located in hidden locations. It is possible to visit the archaeological remains of the Palau de la Paeria (City Hall) and in Carrer Anselm Clavé, it is also possible to see the remains of Moorish baths and walls dating back to feudal, Moorish and medieval times. In the basement of the Enric Granados auditorium, visitors can also view a superimposed sequence of archaeological levels respectively corresponding to the Late Iberian, Imperial Roman, Late Roman, Moorish Medieval, Christian Medieval and Modern periods. Finally, the church of Sant Joan conserves remains of a medieval apse and other elements dating from the Christian Medieval and Modern periods.

The main objective of this interesting ethnographic route through the comarca (local district) of L’Alt Urgell is to publicise the traditional ways of life, customs and LA SEU CALBINYÀ EL PONT DE BAR Castellbò D’URGELL socioeconomic activities of different historical times and places. The route is organised a number of different spaces MONTFERRER and theme museums. One example is the Museu de la ARSÈGUEL Adrall Vinya i el Vi (Vine and Wine Museum) of Pont de Bar, which els Castells Noves de Segre gives visitors a view of the thousand-year-old wine-making Josa de Cadí tradition of these lands. The Museu de la Llana (Wool Cabó Museum) of Arsèguel shows how a fulling mill used to work Ossera TUIXENT Organyà in the 17th century, while the Museu de l’Accordió exhibits Alinyà dozens of accordions. In Calbinyà, the Museu del Pagès (Country COLL DE Life Museum) provides visitors with an insight into how people NARGÓ once lived in an old mountain cottage. At Coll de Nargó, it is possible to visit the Museu dels Raiers (River Rafters’ Museum) and to discover OLIANA this old profession. The old La Trobada flour mill, at Montferrer, Peramola shows the how flour used to be made. The old ice well, at Oliana, and the Museu de les Trementinaires (Herbal Remedies Ogern Museum), at Tuixent –where it is possible to discover numerous curative herbs, natural remedies and the secret of this fascinating trade–, complete this list of unique places in L’Alt Urgell that remind us of the trades and professions of the past. View the history of the Knights Templar through modern eyes. The Centre for Interpreting the Templar Order, which is located in the Gardeny part of Lleida, opens the doors to what was one of the most important Knights Templar centres of the Crown of Aragon. The castle of Gardeny, along with those of Miravet, Montsó and Peníscola, and the town of Tortosa, forms part of the Domus Templi Knights Templar Route. The Templar House (12th to 14th century), which is one of the group of structuires at Gardeny, was one of the most important Templar decision making centres of the Crown of Aragon. The centre has now been rehabilitated for thematic visits and offers cultural visits with information panels, audiovisuals and other explicative elements that help to recreate the day-to-day life of this military order that was stationed in the Lands of Lleida. The exhibition also highlights the strategic importance that Gardeny hill has had from Roman times through to the present day.

These frontier castles, which date from the 10th, 11th and 12th centuries, once defended the local territory. This 70 km route crosses the comarques of La Segarra, L’Urgell and La Noguera. It is possible to visit the castles of Montsonís (La Noguera), Montclar (L’Urgell), Florejacs, Les Pallargues, Concabella, Les Sitges and Vicfred (La Segarra) and Formós (La Noguera) and also the monumental towns of Balaguer, Cervera and Agramunt and monumental villages like Montfalcó Murallat... The River Sió marks a thematic route that coincides with the frontier lines that corresponded to the Upper Marches towards the end of the 10th century and in the early 11th century; this is a very characteristic, historic and monumental landscape. At the castle of Concabella, it is possible to visit the Centre for Interpreting the Castles of Sió and at the castle of Montsonís, visitors will find an explanation of how castles used to communicate between each other back in the Middle Ages.

At Gósol, the Picasso Route seeks to show some of the paths associated with the arrival and stay of Pablo Picasso in the spring and summer of 1906. These paths will enable visitors to take a journey back into the past and to discover places frequented by the painter back at that time. There are 8 routes of which 6 are considered significant to the painter’s stay in the village of Gósol. The other 2 routes are external and correspond to Picasso’s arrival from Guardiola and his subsequent departure towards Bellver de Cerdanya.

The comarques (local districts) of Lleida possess an important range of cave art that was declared part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. The examples of cave art in the Mediterranean Arc of the Iberian Peninsula date from the end of the prehistoric period and form a group of exceptional quality. They provide a wonderfully lively and very graphic insight into how people lived at a critical moment in human development through a series of paintings that are unique in terms of both their style and the subjects treated. This is the largest group of sites with cave art in the whole of Europe and offers an exceptional insight into the life of humankind during an essential period in the evolution of human culture. Of the 16 sites in the Lands of Lleida, it is necessary to highlight the Roca dels Moros at El Cogul, which was discovered in 1908. It has a collection of naturalist cave paintings that were produced at the end of the Palaeolithic Age. There are 42 human and animal figures grouped in hunting scenes and also 250 carvings. It is also important to mention the Cova, or Balma, dels Vilars, located on the right bank of the River Farfanya, near the village of Os de Balaguer. The site, which dates from the Bronze Age, contains 29 schematic figures. Other groups of cave art that can be visited include the Balma dels Punts and the Vall de la Coma, at L’Albi, and the Roques Guàrdies, at Les Borges Blanques; Aparets I, II, III and IV, Antona I, II and III, the Cova del Tabac and the Cova del Cogulló, in La Noguera, and the Roc Rumbau or Roca dels Moros, in L’Alt Urgell. The Dolmens Route VAL D'ARAN
This route combines sections of gentle terrain combined with others with some quite pronounced climbs. Along the way there are stops to visit the dolmens signposted. From Favà, the route runs downhill as far as Organyà. In the Cabó valley, it is possible to see a number of these prehistoric funeral monuments, which are located in places with quite attractive surrounding countryside. This all makes for a pleasant outing which is further complemented by views of the picturesque villages and houses of the valley.

Route 1: This route, which recovers the main branch of the Way of Saint James from Catalonia to Galicia, begins at Sant Pere de Rodes (the veritable “world’s end” in the extreme north-east of the Iberian Peninsula) and then leads on to Vilabertran-Figueres (L’Alt Empordà), where it joins the branch from France and La Jonquera. The route then continues through the comarques (local districts) of Osona, El Bages, L’Anoia, La Segarra, L’Urgell, El Pla d’Urgell and El Segrià, before reaching Alcarràs (El Segrià), where this section of the Way of Saint James finishes and the route joins the path that continues on to Fraga, in Aragon. The most significant reference points along the Way are the monastery of Montserrat and the Seu Vella (Old Cathedral) of Lleida. The route crosses La Segarra, L’Urgell, El Pla d’Urgell and El Segrià and passes places and monuments of great interest, including the historic centres of Igualada, Tàrrega and Cervera and beautiful Romanesque churches such as Santa Maria del Camí and Sant Pere el Gros (Cervera - La Segarra). The route between Montserrat and Alcarràs is 140 km long and can be walked in 5 stages, each of around 25 to 30 km. several transversal variants running through the Lands of Lleida:

Did you know that Pinós stands at the geographic centre of Catalonia? The centre of Catalonia is marked by a stone sculpture of a compass and is very near the sanctuary of Santa Maria de Pinós, which is a centre of religious devotion for the local inhabitants. Near the village of Ardèvol, 4 km along the route, there is a defence tower that it is possible to climb and from which visitors can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view. Continuing on towards Su, visitors will find the Miracle Shrine, whose most salient feature is its majestic, baroque-style altarpiece. It dates from the 13th century XVIII and is one of the most important in Catalonia. The route then goes on to Solsona and its historic centre, where it is possible to visit the Museu Diocesà i Comarcal (Local District Museum), which houses important examples of baroque and Romanesque art and architecture. A further 4 km along the route, in the direction of Berga (C-26), visitors can find the church of Sant Esteve d’Olius, an example of 11th century Romanesque Lombard architecture and just a few metres further on, there is the Art Nouveau cemetery built by Bernadí Martorell in 1916.

During the Second World War (1939-1945), the Pyrenees Mountains were a passing point for thousands of people who fled from France to Spain either to escape from the Nazi atrocities or to try to reach England or North Africa and continue fighting alongside the allied forces. These people were refugees from different places and under different conditions (men, women, soldiers, Jews, members of the resistance, etc). They were looking for a way to cross the Pyrenees in order to obtain the freedom denied to them in a Europe ravaged by war. Guides, prison escapees and police forces made these areas their natural refuge as they defied extreme temperatures, winter snows and abrupt terrain. Hundreds of these escapees followed a cross-frontier route between the French local district of L’Arieja and El Pallars Sobirà, which passed through the Pala de Clavera coll. This route, which is now known as “The Path to Freedom”, is of great symbolic value. It forms part of the historic memory and is now signposted, which allows walkers to follow in the footsteps of those men and women. The route, whose Catalan section runs through the Alt Pirineu Natural Park, begins in the French municipal district of Seix and ends at Alós d’Isil. The natural wealth of the Pyrenean scenery is complemented by detailed information about its heritage value; this is a significant example of historical memory tourism.

Tourists are recommended to visit the “Path to Freedom” Prison-Museum to get an even better insight into this moment of European history. This historical memory museum is located in what used to be the prison of Sort, which once held around 3,000 people who had escaped from the Second World War. The building now contains a permanent exhibition that explains the odyssey experienced by the thousands of people who crossed the Pyrenees between 1939 and 1944. This space aims to reconstruct, interpret and remember, providing information about the war years. It also seeks to invite reflection about the value of peace, democracy and freedom in the modern world. The “Path to Freedom” and the Prison-Museum both form part of the Network of Spaces that conserve the Historical Memory of Catalonia. The highly varied range of heritage spaces proposed include: itineraries, interpretation centres, historical markers, remains, and “in situ” recovered heritage, etc.. The museum seeks to give visitors a better insight into the recent history of Catalonia. Leaving Sant Llorenç de Morunys by the road to Coll de Jou, after about 5 km, visitors will find a small car park from where it is possible to contemplate the stepped relief of Els Bastets (Pyrenees-El Solsonès). The route then continues to Coll de Jou, a large pine forest, and the leisure area of El Codó. After walking for about 10 minutes, visitors will reach the vantage point of La Creu de Codó, which offers numerous breathtaking views. The route then goes on towards the Port del Comte ski resort, which also offers magnificent panoramic views and where it is possible to enjoy other walks in summer. Continuing along the road to La Coma, it is possible to go up to the Port pass, which forms the border with the neighbouring comarca (local district) of L’Alt Urgell. It is then downhill to La Coma and Sant Llorenç de Morunys, moving slowly through the Vall de la Coma, enjoying the scenery, with the peaks of the Serra de la Busa in the distance. PLA D'URGELL

The Space of Natural Interest in the Vall del Riu Llobregós, La Segarra, which lies within the triangle formed by the villages of Sanaüja, Biosca and Massoteres, is a good place for walking and MTB routes. The part of the Vall del Llobregós included in the PEIN (Plan for Spaces of Natural Interest) is one of truly unique characteristics. This applies to its geological formation and vegetation and also to the fauna found in this fragile and very vulnerable terrain, whose total surface area is around 1,190 ha. The area includes the middle section of the river valley and the municipal districts of Biosca, Massoteres and Sanaüja. It is one of the most typical gypsum landscapes in the Central Catalan Depression and also one of the best conserved.

This route offers visitors the chance to embark on a walk of discovery through areas with a markedly rural character; farmsteads and churches are sprinkled across the territory and form part of a unique and beautiful landscape. Along the way, after visiting Solsona and its old walled centre, the route runs through the Cardener gorges, passing the Llosa del Cavall reservoir, the interesting village of Sant Llorenç de Morunys, the settlement of La Coma, the source of the River Cardener, Port del Comte, Coll de Jou and Cambrils, where there is a saltwater spring. The route then continues to the vantage point of the Serra Seca, the Ribera Salada and the Clop Bridge, before returning to Solsona.

The Ruta dels Segadors (Reapers’ Route) -which is also known as the Way to Cerdanya, as it goes to Bellver de Cerdanya- begins at the village of Gósol. In the past, this el Vilar d’Urtx itinerary was used by reapers, but also by carters, militia Alp men, bandits, musicians and smugglers. This was also the Das route followed by the painter Pablo Ruiz Picasso, back in Urús 1906, when he was staying at the village of Gósol. This historic Túnel route, which is now signposted, crosses the Cadí sierra and can del CADÍ be completed in seven to eight hours. Along the way, visitors can discover unequalled scenery as well as some of the Pyrenean fauna of the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park. The route can also be done on skis or snowshoes in winter. There is also the option of doing the Reapers’ Route in two days, as it is possible to spend the night at the Cèsar August Torras mountain shelter and then continue the walk the following day.

The “Lakes Train” is a period tourist train that that operates along the LleidaLa Pobla de Segur line and runs through spectacular scenery. From the windows of the train, visitors will discover a highly varied territory, with the fertile crop fields of the plain, the abrupt limestone cliffs and gorges of El Montsec, and the calm waters of four lakes... and all of this against the backdrop of the peaks of the Pyrenees. The Lakes Train offers visitors a wide range of cultural, sporting, gastronomic, monumental and natural options. Visitors are particularly recommended to complete their trip with visits to: the Art Nouveau buildings around Casa Mauri in La Pobla de Segur; the Museu dels Raiers; the museum shops of Salàs de Pallars; the Gothic church of Valldeflors in Tremp; the Castle of Mur; the Centre for Observing the Universe at Àger; and the monuments of Balaguer.

Discover places of legend and refuges of Pyrenean mythology in the Valls d’Aguilar through one of the itineraries described in Pep Coll’s book Viatge al Pirineu Fantàstic.The route is based on the myths and legends that compiled therein and also on those that appear in the work Marrades: màgia i realitat a la muntanya, by Joan Obiols. This itinerary allows visitors to get an idea of the legendary world of the Pyrenees and it also gives them an opportunity to discover a little-known valley that is rich in natural heritage and is of great value and beauty. The manairons (Pyrenean elves) of La Guàrdia have been chosen as “guides” along the way and, even today, the rock scree which can be seen near the village is still taken as evidence of their incredible strength. This is an invitation to really get inside a fairy tale, with all the adventure and mystery which that entails. Key points along the route: Noves de Segre: the mythology of the Pyrenees; La Guàrdia d’Ares: the manairons; Taús: the last Moor in the country; Castellàs del Cantó: the secret of the enchanted; Biscarbó: the King of England’s treasure; Argestues: the creation of the Pyrenees. There are two important humid zones in the southern part of Lleida, one of which is the Aiguabarreig (river confluence). It is possible to get there by following the LP-7041 to Soses, Seròs and La Granja d’Escarp. The Aiguabarreig (river confluence) is an important breeding area for various species of wading birds, including the Night Heron, Cattle Egret, Little Egret, and Squacco Heron. The other interesting area is Utxesa, where it is possible to observe the Marsh Harrier throughout the year. It is possible to get there from the municipality of Torres de Segre, which is in the west of the comarca (local district) of El Segrià. Following the C12 from Seròs towards Maials and Lleida, bird-lovers can reach Alfés, Sarroca de Lleida and Llardecans. At Llardecans, it is possible to take the C-230 to Sudanell and Albatàrrec and then return to Lleida. Following this route will allow ornithologists to visit a typical steppe area. In winter, they are sure to see examples of the Calandria Lark, Thekla Lark and Eurasian Dotterel, while in summer, they should see the Lesser Grey Shrike, Greater Short-toed Lark, and the colourful European Bee-eater and European Roller. Visitors wishing to see the Lesser Kestrel are advised to take a trip to the area around Menàrguens (following the C12 from Lleida) where several nesting towers have been built in the middle of the drylands to help the species to breed. Visitors can continue further along the C12 and C13 and cross the Montsec sierra to see examples of the Peregrine Falcon and Red Kite in flight, before arriving at Tremp, where they can see various birds of prey, such as the Bearded Vulture. It is possible to continue up into the Pyrenees, along the N-260 and the C13, to the small village of Espot, a typical high mountain location where the Black Woodpecker, Chough and Common Crossbill can also be observed.

The north of the comarca (local district) of Les Garrigues is irrigated by the waters of the Canal d’Urgell and this route follows the 18 km course of its 4th irrigation channel, which passes through the settlements of Juneda and Les Borges Blanques. Leaving Juneda, visitors will first come to the Salt Desfet grove, which will take them to the First Machine. All that now remains of the First and Second Machines (watermills) are their weirs; the accompanying buildings have been knocked down and removed. Continuing along the path, visitors will reach the New Falls, where there is now a small electrical power station and a rest area. Following the canal, they will then reach the Canal d’Urgell and the area known as El Collet. The southern part of the route begins back at Les Borges Blanques, at the frontier between the irrigated and dryland zones, which has produced very contrasting landscapes. Without leaving the banks of the canal, walkers will reach the Casella del Tei (control post), from where they should take the Miravall path: This will lead them to the village of Juneda which is where the route ends.

Since its recover in 2005, the Ivars and Vila-sana Pool has become the fourth most important humid zone in Catalonia and it is a place where it is possible to observe over 210 different bird species. There are various lookout and vantage points, picnic areas, bicycle hire points and two information points where visitors can hire binoculars. The pool is the epicentre of the four tourist routes that run through El Pla d’Urgell and visit this location: the Ornithological Route, the Horse-Riding Route, the route through the municipal districts that surround this natural space, and the variant of the Catalan section of the Way of Saint James.

It is possible to get to La Terreta, a rather special place in El Pallars Jussà, either by following the Vall dels Voltors Route from Tremp or by travelling from the Val d’Aran. The 31 km route: Tremp-Pont d’Orrit-Torre de Tamúrcia-Espluga de Serra-Castellet-Sapeira-Pont d’Orrit-Tremp is not very difficult. Although generally apt throughout the year, it is particularly interesting in spring and summer when many migrating birds visit the area. It is important to highlight the variety of scenery and geology in this area and its rich fauna. Bird-watchers can observe the Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus), Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), Egyptian Vulture (Neophron pernocpterus), Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), Eurasian Eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) and Peregrine Falcon (Falcó pregrinus). In the case of mammals, there are examples of the Wild Cat (Felis sylvestris), Badger (Meles meles), Fox (Vulpes vulpes), Wild Boar (Sus escrofa) and some Pyrenean Chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica).

L’Alta Ribagorça is famed for the great quality of its pools. Waters that travel with force and that define the network of footpaths that cross the comarca (local district) from north to south and west to east. Ancestral paths, horseshoe paths, historical high roads, livestock trails, mountain paths that allow visitors to experience new sensations as they discover the wildest of nature. The Water Way is 26 km long and has a net variation in altitude of 650 m. This itinerary follows different sections of old, traditional paths and cattle crossings that run near the main rivers in the comarca and which connect the tail end of the Escales reservoir and the monastery of Lavaix, at El Pont de Suert, with the Caldes de Boí spa.

The Green Route through the Vall Fosca (Dark Valley) links the Gento Pool to the water chamber at Capdella and has a total length of 5 km. The route follows old railway lines and passes through 4 tunnels. It is also possible to continue on as far as the village of Espui and the neighbouring Vall d’Àssua, in El Pallars Sobirà. Visitors can also get there by taking the L-503 to Capdella and then going on to the Sallente dam. Once there, they should take the cable car, which operates from Jult to September, up to the Gento Pool. The alternative way to Espui involves following the Collada del Triador forest track.

Discovering the culture of the local wine is the best way to discover the Lands of Lleida. The Lleida Wine Route is a walk that combines the gastronomy, culture and geography of Lleida. These can be experienced through the cellars and by enjoying the local gastronomy, discovering the area’s natural and cultural resources and taking part in complementary activities. Like its wines, Lleida’s cuisine is rich and varied. From north to south, the route runs through municipal districts where the vines of the Costers del Segre Designation of Origin combine with the best in local gastronomy. The route also incorporates a selection of restaurants that represent the cuisine of Lleida, which is based on natural products produced in the local territory: fruits, vegetables, olive oils and meats. This is a legacy that coexists with the new cuisine and which is reinvented every day with eyes set on a “delicious” landscape.

By dividing the area into seven sub-zones, this route allows visitors to combine the attractive landscapes and monuments of the different comarques (local districts) of western Catalonia with visits to Lleida’s wine cellars. Artesa de Segre sub-zone: Celler Teixidó, Celler del Montsec, Vinya l’Hereu, Vall de Baldomar, Bodegas Costers del Sió, Agropecuària les Pletes, la Figuera and Casa Patau. L’Urgell sub-zone: Castell del Remei. Les Garrigues sub-zone: Cérvoles celler, Clos Pons, Mas Blanch i Jové, Tomàs Cusiné and Vinya Els Vilars. El Pallars Jussà sub-zone: Bodegues Vila Corona, Castell d’Encús and Orcauvins. Raïmat sub-zone: Raïmat (Grup Codorniu). El Segrià sub-zone: Torres de Sanui and La Gravera.
The space of natural interest known as the Tossals (hills) d’Almatret is located on the shores of the Riba-roja reservoir, on the River Ebro, in the extreme south of El Segrià. It is a place where visitors can enjoy scenery marked by the meanders of the river, the striking contrast of colours between the blues of the river and the greens, ochres and browns of the riverside environment, and the visual panorama of the opposite bank, with the sierras of Mequinensa and Ribers. It is also possible to discover the remains of old coal mines and old war trenches and other reminders of the Battle of the Ebro. The itinerary starts at Almatret and continues as far as the village of La Fàbrica, passing the Espanyola mine and its old coal loader on the way to the Duró mine and the vantage point of the La Pena sierra. The route then continues to what had been a trench during the Spanish Civil War. This route leads visitors to the vantage point on the La Pena Cliff which offers magnificent views of the River Ebro. It is then on to El Pou de la Vila and then back again to the village of Almatret. This 10.6 km walking route is relatively easy.

In Lleida, the production of olive oil –which is reputed to be amongst the best in the world– is concentrated in about thirty villages in the comarques (local districts) of Les Garrigues, L’Urgell and El Segrià, which carry the DO Les Garrigues. As a result, these settlements form the nucleus of the Olive Oil Route. The austere landscapes of Les Garrigues are not devoid of charm and offer the perfect destination for those interested in making a trip to taste and buy (delicious and healthy) olive oil and to visit some of the local points of interest, which include museums and theme parks, the castles of L’Espluga Calba and La Floresta, the cave paintings of El Cogul, and the Iber village of Els Vilars near Arbeca. Visitors are particularly recommended to visit this area in autumn when it is possible to discover how olive oil is made at many of the local agricultural cooperatives. la Pobla de Cérvoles

A total of 24 municipalities, all with similar characteristics, in an area irrigated by the Canal d’Urgell. Its irrigated croplands produce alfalfa, maize and, above all, fruits; including pears, apples and peaches. The Arbequina olive is the most widespread crop in this comarca. Extra virgin olive oil from Les Garrigues is known all over the world for its excellent properties and taste. Cultural attractions include: the prehistoric cave paintings of El Cogul, which form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that also includes similar remains in other parts of Mediterranean Spain; the remains of the Iber settlement of Els Vilars, near Arbeca; various interesting ethnological museums, including those of Juneda and Castelldans; and the Archaeological Museum of Les Borges Blanques.

La Noguera, which lies in the Pre-Pyrenees of Lleida, is the largest comarcain Catalonia and possesses a great variety of landscapes, including the largest inland water space in Catalonia. Balaguer is the capital of this comarca and also the settlement with the most outstanding monumental patrimony. La Noguera Alta offers charming countryside with hidden corners and natural spaces. It is also full of historical interest and a prime destination for a range of leisure activities. Attractions include: the Montsec d’Ares and Rúbies uplands; the gorges and reservoirs of Montrebei, Terradets and Camarasa; and the nature reserve of Sant Llorenç de Montgai. In this area, it is possible to enjoy outdoor activities such as: trekking; bicycle routes and the Montsec-la Noguera MTB Centre; aerial activities; climbing; and caving. The landscapes of La Noguera Baixa are dominated by large extensions of open plains with fields of dryland and irrigated crops. The cuisine of La Noguera is essentially simple and based on fruit and vegetables of great quality. Its cured meats and pork preserves are excellent. Other important local delicacies include coca de recapte (a type of savoury pizza), samfaina(ratatouille) and snails.

These 16 municipalities are irrigated by the Canals d’Urgell. Mollerussa is the geographic and economic centre of El Pla d’Urgell and the natural capital of the comarca. The local economy has an eminently agricultural base, with numerous intensively irrigated crops. Irrigation canals completely transformed the economy and appearance of El Pla d’Urgell, converting what used to be hard, dry terrain into rich irrigated land. Important local highlights include: the Estany d’Ivars i Vila-sana, the largest inland lake in Catalonia and an important reference point for ornithologists; and the Espai Cultural dels Canals d’Urgell, a cultural centre located at the Casa Canal in Mollerussa. The gentle, horizontal landscape offers an invitation to follow the different routes that run through the comarca on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback.
