Kentucky Bunco Bash S TO R Y & P H OTO G R A P H Y B Y K A L A N A L D E R
It was great weekend for the Kentucky Bunco Bash held March 10-13. The event was held at the Holiday Inn in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The event would not have been possible without generous sponsors. The annual Bunco Bash attracts people from the area to play in this weekend event. The room was full of ladies from as far south as Alabama and up around Northern Kentucky. Prizes were given away throughout the event. It was a great time for people to enjoy themselves and have a good time. The bash benefitted the Pink Ribbon Network, which is a breast cancer support group. One group of ladies travel every year from Louisville, Kentucky. These ladies always dress to impress with a unique theme. This year they dressed in a “Solar Eclipse” theme” because of the 2017 Solar Eclipse coming up in August. Other groups also dressed in unique costumes to make the event more fun. Throughout the event, women met new friends and enjoyed the game, yelling out BUNCO!! The Holiday Inn, where a lot of the guests stayed, had a door decorating contest in support of The Pink Ribbon Network. It was a great weekend event for people to laugh, play games, and have fun! Unforeseen circumstances can shake even the strongest home to its very foundations; and in the midst of dealing with the challenge of repairing the damage, having an expert to restore the beauty and safety of your home can be invaluable. Since 2011, owner Brent Nicholson and his team at SERVPRO of Montgomery County have been restoring homes and businesses throughout the Clarksville area, taking on the task of cleaning and removing areas of damage from flood water, fire, smoke, mold, sewage, storms, and other destructive forces that can endanger the integrity of a home and put people’s safety at risk. “This is a company dedicated to providing our clients with the greatest help in the most challenging of times, and we guarantee a 24-hour response time to a call because we realize the absolute importance of getting things back to normal as quickly as possible,” says SERVPRO Sales and Marketing Manager Thomas Durett. “Whether our teams have been called in to clean the carpets in a single room of a home or are taking on the clean up of an entire flooded building, we provide a variety of services to meet all of the needs of our clients. lmost in a reversal of roles, like eyes are the windows to the soul, windows are the eyes of a home; and the types of window treatments you select play a huge role in giving your home a real sense of character, charm, and soul. From shutters to blinds and draperies, window coverings add that final bit of pizzazz, bringing pops of color to an otherwise muted pallet and offering shade when the sun shines just a little too brightly. Window treatments have come a long way in the past few years, undergoing a makeover of sorts that makes them a hot-ticket item in home décor, far and away more than just a way to add privacy. They’ve become a wow factor, the perfect way to seal the deal when a room seems to be missing…something. “As a protective element, window coverings are something that many people already consider to be important; but they don’t necessarily realize that blinds, shutters, and shades do much more than add privacy and shield furniture and flooring from the damage of too much light exposure,” says Angie Menard, co-owner of Budget Blinds of Clarksville. “They really are a finishing touch in a home, so selecting the right style is significant.” Certainly, the style is important. But so, too, is the type of window covering you choose. Shutters should be in keeping with the overall
aesthetic of your home and look as though they belong there rather than seeming to be added as an afterthought; and blinds and draperies should elevate the appeal rather than dragging it down. And while it’s easy to consider it all to be minutiae in the grand scheme of things, these are the finer points of your home that really can’t be ignored. You can’t draw the blinds on this one. “Window treatments often fall by the wayside as an added expense, but we offer our clients in-home consultations and guidance on selecting options that are within their budget and still very much suit their style,” Menard says. With more than 19 years of experience, Menard and her father Michael, with whom she coowns the business, has seen her share of trends come and go; but the importance of quality has never gone out of vogue. “We have a reputation for the superiority of our work, our customer service, and the products we offer our clients,” she says. “Satisfaction is our greatest goal, and we work tirelessly to achieve that.” Budget Blinds of Clarksville is available for consultation, estimates, and installation from 8:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m. Monday- Saturday. abinets are, without doubt, important when it comes to adding storage space in a home. But the purpose they serve goes beyond the functional, and so they’re not something that you can just go into any home improvement store and pick out without giving them careful thought. They’re a permanent feature in your home, a grounding force in kitchens and bathrooms. They’re the make-or-break moment for everything else you’ve chosen for the space, from the counters and backsplashes to the flooring. Cabinets pull it all together in one cohesive look, and that makes them all the more crucial. Once they’re in, they’re in, and changing your mind about the color or style isn’t a simple fix. Your needs will naturally depend on the amount of space you have, your budget, and the layout of your rooms. If you can afford designer or custom-made cabinetry, your options are naturally on a broader scale; but regardless of your finances, there are styles, finishes, and colors that will suit your needs and make the design of your home feel complete. “Cabinetry is the most custom part of a home and plays an extremely important role in achieving a unified look, especially in the kitchen,” says Jodi Vaughn, owner of Jodi’s Cabinet Sales, based in Clarksville. “Each kitchen is unique and should be an expression of the homeowner’s personal style—so much more so because, as our slogan states, ‘The kitchen is the heart of the home,’ the place most people gather with their friends and families to spend time with one another and make memories.”

Serving the Clarksville community for over 14 years, Jodi’s Cabinet Sales has been helping its clients create the kitchens and bathrooms of their dreams, offering superior products and excellent, personal customer care to build a reputation as one of the area’s leading home-improvement companies. “We strive to offer quality cabinetry and functional designs at a low price, and we work closely with our clients to determine their specific needs,” says Vaughn. “We recommend that our customers start planning early by picking door styles, colors, and construction options ahead of time so they aren’t forced to settle. Their complete satisfaction is our greatest goal.” And that’s a design for success that matches any style. Jodi’s Cabinet Sales is located at 901 South Riverside Drive, Clarksville, Tennessee 37040. electing furniture seems like it would be a simple process— walk into the store, point to a sofa, and voila! Perfection! Right? Wrong.
In all actuality, the pieces you choose make a world of difference in creating the look and feel of your home, and finding just that “perfect” piece can be a little more complicated than you might imagine. With so many different options in colors, patterns, and styles, it can be easy to feel lost and overwhelmed in all of the choices; and the trends seem to change in the blink of an eye. Regardless of how appealing those picture-perfect and highly stylized rooms captured in the glossy pages of designer magazines might be, however, even the most of-the-moment designs aren’t necessarily what will suit your personal needs and express your style. These are pieces that should function well in your home and fit the way you live your life; so it may be helpful to seek out the guidance of a professional when you’re on the hunt for furniture and décor.
Is your furniture as creative & unique as you are?
Providing their expertise in space planning and custom furniture selection, the team at Furnish123 of Clarksville has been helping its clients create their dream homes since 2010, offering the latest collections from lines like Ashley, Millenium, and Benchcraft. “Our concept is to make furniture shopping as easy as 1-2-3 and we believe that your furniture should be just as creative and unique as you are,” says store manager Sarah Custer. “Furniture is meant to be beautiful and functional, but there really is more to it that that. These are more than just the pieces we sit on and look at in our homes. They become a part of the picture we create in our daily lives as we make memories with our family and friends.” As an Ashley Furniture concept store, Furnish123 offers the full line of Ashley Furniture and is excited to introduce the launch of Nuvella Performance Fabric, an eco-friendly, stain resistant, and durable fabric that comes in a range of colors and patterns perfectly suited for any style. “We pride ourselves on our reputation as being one of the best places to buy furniture in Clarksville, and we strive to achieve excellence in our customer service as well as in our products. We don’t just sell furniture. We offer and are known for personal care and attention.” Furnish123 is located at 2139 Lowes Drive, Clarksville, Tennessee, 37040. Absolutely Floored
I
S T O R Y BY L I E S E L S C H M I DT
f you’ve ever walked into someone’s home and been completely floored by the floors, you’re hardly alone. Sure, they do their duty as a pathway from one room to the next; but with the amount of real estate that flooring claims in interior spaces, those surfaces have to be more than functional. They also have to be beautiful. Far more than something you simply tread underfoot, flooring can actually alter the aesthetic of a room; and even the most attractive homes can be taken down by flooring that’s dated, dingy, or dinged-up. So before you dismiss flooring as something that can be done on the cheap, consider the look you want to achieve in your home and make sure that your floors aren’t tripping you up.
In areas of high traffic, durable flooring like hardwood, tile, and high quality laminate can be a dream come true; and with a vast array of styles, colors, textures, and patterns available, the possibilities are absolutely endless. Carpeting is a great
solution for living areas and bedrooms, as well; and there are highly stylish options that suit every aesthetic and budget. It’s amazing to realize the way that flooring can affect a room. It can make you love it or hate it, and the color or the pattern you’ve selected makes all the difference in the world. “Take your time and plan properly before going through with the installation process,” advises Kelli Baggett, co-owner of Baggett Carpet Services. “Take samples home and put them in the rooms where they will be installed to make sure that you’re satisfied with the way they look in those areas. You’ll need to study them—how the lighting in those rooms affects the colors of the flooring, how they look with the rest of the décor. All of that plays a huge factor in making a selection that will fully satisfy you,” Kelli continues. “Making the right selection is extremely important because, unlike clothes, it’s not something that people want to have to change anytime soon after it’s installed.” For more than 14 years, Kelli and her husband, Mike, have been serving the needs of residential and commercial clients throughout the Clarksville area, offering a wide range of flooring options to suit every style and budget. They’ve got the expertise to guide their customers through the process of selection, installation, and care. And their level of service will really leave you floored. The annual festival, running March 18-April 23, features more than 150,000 blooming bulbs throughout the gardens and six weekends of entertainment, special programming and natural inspiration for guests of all ages. “Cheekwood in Bloom is one of the most magical times to be at Cheekwood as tulips, daffodils and flowering trees spread color throughout the gardens,” said Meagan Rust, public programs manager. “With family-friendly weekend programming and the addition of the Beer Garden, there is no better place to be to celebrate spring’s arrival.” Over 150,000 bulbs were planted last fall in preparation for this year’s color explosion including: 103,100 Tulips, including 3,000 tulips in downtown Nashville’s Riverview Gardens 20,745 Violas & Pansies 20,150 Daffodils, including 10,000 planted in the Mustard Meadow 16,025 Hyacinths 1,725 Camassia 107 Cultivars of Tulips According to Caroline Jeronimus, Communications Manager of Cheekwood, “some of the most asked about plants by visitors at Cheekwood are the following: Rising Sun Eastern redbud, Piedmont azaleas, pawpaw, flowering dogwood, baptisia “Carolina Moonlight,” trillium and fothergilla.

A Conversation with Caroline Jeronimus CO M M U N I CAT I O N S M A N AG E R AT C H E E K W O O D B O TA N I CA L G A R D E N S
VIP: Why is spring at Cheekwood so special? CAROLINE JERONIMUS (CJ): The celebration of the arrival of spring in Nashville is a really exciting time at Cheekwood. There is so much anticipation of spring as people have gone through the long winter with dreary and gray days of January and February. To me, Cheekwood in Bloom starts a new season. Daylight Saving Time allows for more daylight in the evening and the gardens are incredibly visual, vibrant and colorful. We have family-friendly activities throughout the Cheekwood in Bloom festival and something to appeal to all ages. Music is offered, our picnic tables are brought out, and we have strung lights near a new beer garden. In addition this year we will offer seasonal craft beers and craft cocktails and other weekend activities. There is something to appeal to everyone. VIP: Why is Cheekwood in Bloom special? CJ: Cheekwood in Bloom is truly a sight to behold! The Bradford Robertson Color Garden is the hub of our activities. I direct people there. Much thought goes into the way the colors are planted and the color contrasts. The Color Garden is located next to the Visitors Services building. Cheekwood in Bloom starts in March and goes through April 23. Our blooms are about 3 weeks early because of the warm weather we experienced in February. VIP: What’s new this year at Cheekwood? CJ: Firs the time we will have a Beer Garden with live jazz music on the weekends, six weekends of family activities, Summer Camp (open to anyone; registration opened February 1), and Dressing Downton will be open to the public on June 17 in the gallery of the mansion on the top floor. We will have several events with a 1930s theme including antique cars in the Frist Learning Center, afternoon teas and speakeasy style cocktails on Thursday nights during the summer. Another new event will take place on April 23 when visitors may bring 54 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | April 2017
their dogs out to be photographed. We will host a donation drive for the Nashville Humane Association. VIP: What is the status of the Cheekwood mansion restoration? Is it closed to the public at present? CJ: The mansion officially closed on January 3 as we began an historic restoration. It is set to re-open to the public on June 17 in tandem with our Downton Abbey Exhibit, which will take place June 17-September 10. VIP: What will visitors find in the newly restored Cheekwood mansion? CJ: Each room will be restored in the way it was when the family resided in the home. We have photos of every room in the house. We are scraping down to the original layers of paint put on the walls in the 1930s. We are restoring original paint colors on the walls and tracking down period furniture. The mansion will re-open to the public on June 17. VIP: What’s new in your Gift Shop? CJ: We have new spring merchandise. The shop manager rotates the merchandise seasonally. At present it is springy and fun with tulip bulbs, hyacinth bulbs, books, Nashville-specific gifts for out-of-town visitors, gardening accessories, and children’s books among other items. VIP: If you were advising a first-time visitor coming to Cheekwood to see the glorious spring blooms, what are the must-see attractions? CJ: I would definitely visit our Color Garden. It’s a beautiful place to walk around with a lot of contrasting colors popping through there. The arches are gorgeous and be sure to walk down to the Triple Ponds that flow into each other. There are benches and picnic tables where visitors may sit by the water and see turtles and wildlife. The sound of the water, seeing the mansion and the wisteria arbor—it’s a lovely place to spend some time outdoors.
ABOUT CHEEKWOOD
EVERY SATURDAY
Cheekwood is a 55-acre botanical garden and art museum located on the historic Cheek estate. Its mission is to preserve Cheekwood as an historical landmark where beauty and excellence in art and horticulture stimulate the mind and nurture the spirit. Cheekwood presents world-class art exhibitions, showcases breathtaking gardens, and offers educational programs and seasonal festivals to school children and families as well as to the citizens of Nashville and its visitors. Besides the Color Garden, other Cheekwood features include a Sculpture Trail, Public Programs & Special Events, and the Pineapple Room Restaurant, a longtime favorite eatery. (I love their fried green tomato salad, quesadillas, and their decadent dulce de leche cake.) The Pineapple Room is open Tuesday-Sunday for lunch from 11 am-2 pm. Reservations are encouraged by calling (615) 352-4859. Box lunches may be purchased and picnic tables are located near the Water Garden.

HISTORY OF CHEEKWOOD The history and origin of Cheekwood are intimately interwoven with the growth of Nashville, the Maxwell House coffee brand, and the Cheeks, one of the city’s early entrepreneurial families. The Cheeks bought 100 acres of what was then woodland in West Nashville for a country estate. To design and build the house and grounds, they hired New York residential and landscape architect, Bryant Fleming, and gave him control over every detail—from landscaping to interior furnishings. The result was a limestone mansion and extensive formal gardens inspired by the grand English houses of the 18th century. Fleming’s masterpiece, Cheekwood, was completed in 1932. Huldah Cheek Sharp and her husband, Walter, lived at Cheekwood until the 1950s when they offered the 30,000-square-foot Georgian-style mansion as a site for a botanical garden and art museum. The development of the property was spearheaded by the Exchange Club of Nashville, the Horticultural Society of Middle Tennessee, and many other civic groups. The Nashville Museum of Art donated its permanent collections and proceeds from the sale of its building to the effort. The new Cheekwood opened to the public in 1960.

OUTDOOR

ith the rise in all things al fresco, more focus is being given to outdoor spaces than ever before; and people are tricking out their backyards with everything from fire pits and water features to fully equipped kitchens that could satisfy a Michelin-star chef. It’s absolutely amazing to see the way even the smallest spaces are being transformed—serene tropical oases in the midst of urban life, romantic Tuscan vineyards set amongst cityscapes where grappa isn’t actually available unless you make a trip to the corner store. Outdoor spaces have become a blank canvas for the imagination to run free; and the market has really risen to meet the demand, creating products that are functional and durable enough to withstand the wear and tear of the elements but stylish enough to be used indoors. There’s continuity to it all—a seamless flow that breaks down the barriers and easily guides everyone outside to enjoy a breath of fresh air, to take in a glimpse of the firmament in all its natural glory. Sunrise, sunset, twinkling stars sprinkled across the inky night sky…Nature is in, and people are investing the big bucks in spaces that were once merely an afterthought. Whatever your vibe, there are options perfect for bringing your vision to life, whether you want a mini waterpark or have your heart set on something more sophisticated. But before you go all-out in planning the magazine-worthy backyard of your dreams, you need to rein it in and take a hard look at reality. For instance: What amount of space do you have? What type of terrain do you have and what is the size of your budget? Yes, they might put a damper on all the fun you’re having with creating a Pinterest 58 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | April 2017
board brimming in ideas for things like designer appliances and glittering pools fed by the cool cascade of a waterfall; but all of those questions play a huge factor in what’s feasible for you. They’ll also determine whether or not you’ll need to call in a professional to help you or can you tackle it all on your own in a fit of DIY madness. Naturally, the products you choose are crucial in maintaining any sort of budget. Those bright and shiny high-end options may have your inner magpie under a spell; but if you want to get the most bang for your buck and stretch your dollar just a little bit farther, take a look at options that have a similarly fantastically high style without the fantastically high price.
...there is an infinite amount of ways to get your outdoor space to serve your needs and bring a dose of fun...
You’ll also need to think practically in terms of what you’ll actually use. If you hardly step foot in the kitchen insideyour house, installing an outdoor kitchen will be nothing more than an exercise in wasteful spending. On the flip side, if you have wicked skills at the grill, giving yourself a place to fire up your passion and put those talents to use will be a wise investment. Looking for a cozy spot to curl up and watch the world go by? Create an outdoor living area with comfortable seating arrangements and consider the installation of a fire pit to warm chilly nights. Even small changes can make a modest patio space more inviting, and you can make the transformation with minimal investments of time and money. Pergolas add shade to seating and dining areas as well; and on days when the sun is shining too brightly, those shady spots are crucial in staying comfortable and cool just a little bit longer. Regardless of what your budget may be or what type of backyard you have, there is an infinite amount of ways to get your outdoor space to serve your needs and bring a dose of fun to your daily life. All it takes is a little bit of planning and some creative vision, and that un-tapped terra firma can become the best spot in—or out—of the house.

Cornhole Tournament S TO R Y & P H OTO G R A P H Y B Y GREG WILLIAMSON
More than 32 teams competed in a cornhole tournament at Sports Doctor Athletics indoor sports facility. Adults and kids grabbed a small bag filled with corn, stood 30 feet away and pitched it, or tried to, onto a 4ft x 2 ft board with a hole in it. According to Casey Dickson, co-owner of Sports Doctor, this event is a fund raiser for grass or sod for a new outdoor 200 foot regulation softball field. “We have a volunteer who has graciously donated his time to help with the field” Dickson said. Right now the indoor facility has men’s soccer, indoor batting cages with some instructors, and even football. The Lil Saints, 10, 12, and 14 and under softball groups also train here. “We feel this is good for the community. More team availability to practice and host community events” said Dickson. One Clarksville couple came to compete and have fun. Jeff and Sonya Weston took their positions and while practicing seemed to miss more than hitting the board. While looking down at his partner, Sonya, “We’ll need a lot of luck tonight” laughed Jeff. Just then she put one in the hole without a bounce. “What?!” Sonya said laughing. John and Temesia Perdue drove down from Madisonville, KY just to compete in the event. Well, maybe not just for the event. Their 13 year old daughter trains at the facility and competes with the Lil Saints. “We want to have some fun and show our support for this event” said Temesia.
