Once listed with the Hannah Price, and after only 3 days on the market, the sellers received multiple offers, and accepted an offer that net them $20,000 more than they initially expected (even with commissions)! What made the difference? We made small suggestions, took professionals photos and executed our aggressive marketing plan. Boom, SOLD for top dollar! We pay attention to every detail and spare no expense when it comes to prepping and marketing our homes! Details matter. Photography matters. Marketing matters. Your agent matters. Montgomery County Sheriff ’s Office recently hosted a BBQ Fundraiser for Duane Gray of Gray Smoke BBQ, who was recently injured in a kitchen mishap. “On Mother’s Day, Duane was making homemade Cannoli and the stovetop blew up,” Cynthia Gray said. Duane had his hand over a pot of oil, and it just washed over him. It took the skin right off his hand and arm.”

Cynthia says the recovery is going well. Duane has regained most of his mobility, but has lost a lot of strength. “Duane still can’t do all the work he was doing before, so business is down right now. It has been humbling, all the support we’ve gotten. We started Gray Smoke to give to the community, we never thought we would be on the other end. First Responders have a place in our hearts, we help them anyway we can. There are no words to express our gratitude to this entire community.” Sheriff John Fuson said, “We wanted to help Duane and his family get back on their feet. It’s hard for small business owners. He and his family care about this community. Gray Smoke is always there for us They fed hundreds of us during the Kirby Wallace manhunt. That spoke volumes about them, and now it’s our turn to give back. We sold 900 tickets, and we greatly appreciate everyone who contributed to this effort.”

We knew this would be a seamless transition. People ask if I’m nervous. I say, despite what’s happening across the country, I am not, because I’ve been involved in Chief Ansley’s decisions. I can take ownership of those decisions. We’ve been building toward this for nine years. Accreditation was his goal, and it took a few years to get there. But, we’re ready now. And, I can assure you we’ll continue to review our policies to make them stronger.”

People You Should Know: Dannelle Whiteside

Story by Dr. Lorneth Peters & Photography Courtesy of APSU

On July 6th, Austin Peay State University’s Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Dannelle Whiteside as the interim president. She is the first Black leader in the university’s 200-year history. Her appointment highlights the ongoing effort to ensure that the university reflects the rich diversity of the school body. Less than 24 hours after the announcement, VIP Clarksville Magazine had the opportunity to interview Whiteside who will be taking the helm on August 10, as the university and the higher education landscape experience changes due to the coronavirus pandemic. She joins the small number of minority university presidents in the country. According to data from the American Council on Education, less than a fifth of the country’s college and university leadership positions are held by minorities, of them, only 8% are Black, Afro-Caribbean or African American. WHO IS DANNELLE WHITESIDE? Dannelle is a native Nashvillian, and the daughter of two accomplished parents who instilled in her the importance of education. Her late father was a professor, dean and then became the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR). Her mother served as a school nutritionist with Metro Nashville Public Schools for over two decades before retiring. Dannelle is the proud mother of an active toddler, Donovan and wife of four years to Sean Whiteside. She is a third-generation college graduate who has made promoting equal access to education her life’s work. WHAT MADE WORKING FOR APSU APPEALING? I grew up on a college campus. Some days after school, I’d be in my dad’s office while he advised a student. I love the vibrancy, learning, and family atmosphere I feel every time I walk on the campus of Austin Peay. When I accepted the position as General Counsel, I knew I would have the opportunity for to truly put my stamp on shaping the strategic direction of the university toward an accessible and inclusive campus. WHAT MAKES BEING A LAWYER SIMILAR TO BEING A COLLEGE PRESIDENT?

My title was General Counsel-- emphasis on the “counsel.” College Presidents—similar to lawyers-- rely on the counseling piece and know the importance of considering all sides before making a final decision. Additionally, we have to know the balance between finding a creative solution and when it’s time to accept that the answer is what it is. WHAT ARE SOME CHARACTERISTIC THAT MAKES YOU A GOOD LEADER? I am calm under pressure, stable at heart, and thoughtful with a steady voice. FAVORITE QUOTE: Henry David Thoreau, “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you’ve imagined.” Dannelle Walker Whiteside currently serves as Vice President for Legal Affairs, General Counsel and Secretary to the University’s Board of Trustees. Before coming to Austin Peay, She has worked extensively in the areas of education law and policy. Before accepting a position at APSU, she served as General Attorney for the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights, in Philadelphia, PA. In that position, she reviewed, evaluated, and resolved complex and sensitive cases ranging from sexual violence to disability discrimination.

Mrs. Whiteside, is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., named one of the Nation’s Best Advocates: 40 Lawyers Under 40 by the National Bar Association and IMPACT; and won the Nashville Emerging Leader Award in Education given by the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and YP Nashville. She was named Tennessee Innovation and Leadership Fellow in 2019 and recently named to the 2020 Millennium Leadership Initiative (MLI) class. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dr. Lorneth Peters has worked at Austin Peay State University for over thirteen years. During her time at the University, she has served in several roles. Her most recent position is with the Tennessee Small Business Development Center. As the director of the center, she connects entrepreneurs and business owners with information and opportunities to help start and grow their businesses. Under Lorneth’s leadership, the Center has experienced notable success. Over 400 clients were assisted which led to 7 million in capital infusion with new business starts, jobs created and jobs retained . Lorneth is currently a freelance writer and marketing strategist for several non-profit organizations. She has been married to her husband for 12 years and has two children, ages 9 and 4.

“On the food trucks, we help find locations where businesses want them to come out,” Brown said. On our page, we let people know where the best restaurants are, and who has the best items. We also do reviews, and focus on new food items being offered. We do a little bit of everything on our Facebook page.”

This was CSA Food Scene’s second food truck event of the season, a muchwelcomed change of pace for everyone. “The response has been great,” Brown said. “Everyone is tired of being locked down in their homes. We had four trucks at our first event, and the turnout was amazing. We have five or six trucks tonight, and we rotate them out from event to event to make sure we are offering a variety for our customers. We want to keep them excited about coming.”

Sips & Strolls

Story & Photography by Tony Centonze

Miss Lucille’s recently hosted Sips & Strolls, an evening that combined relaxed shopping and cocktail sipping, while helping owners Trent and Dana Knott celebrate a milestone.

Logan & Olivia Spencer

“Tonight is Sips & Strolls. It’s also our 8th anniversary celebration,” Dana Knott said. “Sadly, we weren’t able to celebrate on the actual date, April 14. We have a wide-open 60,000 sf. so we can easily social-distance, and we know people just want to get out and do something.”

April Foster & Amanda Wade

Knott said, people have been great about supporting Miss Lucille’s and other small businesses. “Sips & Strolls gives customers a chance to grab a glass of wine, or a cocktail, walk and shop with their friends, and just enjoy a nice spring evening here at Miss Lucille’s,” Knott said. “Tonight is about celebrating our birthday, as well as all our vendors who have been so great. They’ve worked so hard on their booths. It’s great to be back in business, and seeing people. We’re so thankful for our community and all the people that shop local. The support we have felt has been incredible.”

LINCOLN REAGAN DINNER Story & Photography by Tony Centonze The Montgomery County Republican Party recently held its annual Lincoln Reagan Dinner at Clarksville’s Wilma Rudolph Event Center. “This is our biggest fund-raising event of the year,” Brenda Lewis Graham said. “We do this annually, but Covid-19 caused rescheduling and some format changes. We still sold more than 300 tickets, and had more than 200 people in attendance.” Debbie & Ramon Aquino

Due to date-changes, this year’s main speaker was not able to attend. Instead, Congressman Mark Green and Senator Marsha Blackburn sent video messages. Lee Greenwood also sent a video message in which he performed a song.

Philip Graham & Rick Longton

“Everything was done differently this year,” Graham said. “The candidates didn’t take turns at the podium, but set up individual booths. Voters could go by and talk to anyone they were interested in finding out more about. Dinner also had to be handled differently. We served the same menu, a full dinner with dessert, but most folks chose to carry out their dinner.” Graham said there were a lot of positive comments, most said they enjoyed the evening and were happy to have a chance to visit with the candidates.

Danielle Myers & Robert Bateman

Corinthia & Lee Elder

Among the candidates in attendance were Manny Sethi, Senator Bill Powers, Doug Englen, Judge Katy Olita, Byron Bush, George Flinn, Curtis Johnson, and John Dawson.

Anniversary

Story & Photography by Tony Centonze The Tennessee Valley Brewing Company recently celebrated its 3rd anniversary with music, food, and of course, a selection of great beers brewed by Eric Brannstrom. “I actually have a total of five new beers, two of which were launched yesterday,” Brannstrom said. “We have the PB & J, an amber style beer that uses blackberry jam, and the Very Berry Summer, a repeat of one we did last year, that’s infused with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. I’m excited about that one, it’s a little tart but not as in sour. The berries are really nice, light and refreshing.” Eric Brannstrom

Other new flavors at TVBC include Ninkasi’s Hymn, a 4,000 year-old Sumerian recipe, a traditional early 1800’s English Strong, both of which are just under 10% (ABV), and a Coffee Blonde. “I wanted to do some fun stuff for our anniversary,” Brannstrom said. “It’s exciting, and crazy that we have been here for three years. The pandemic has been an experience, but as long as everyone keeps drinking beer, we’ll be okay.”

Montgomery County Veterans Coalition:

The Difference a Donor Makes In the world of nonprofit fundraising, boards and organization leadership are constantly planning for the upcoming year. 2020 funds were raised in 2019. This model helps safeguard nonprofits, and ensures their ability to continue to serve underserved populations regardless of the current climate of affairs. Often nonprofits help with vulnerable populations and are frequently called upon in disasters. Due to the volatility of 2020, area nonprofits are serving at maximum capacity, and in many cases have expanded programs despite budgetary constraints and concerns. Executive Director Sherry Pickering lives her life through the lenses of service above self, and the community has supported her mission. Generally, the MCVC has multiple annual fundraisers including a large dinner, and an annual moonlit soiree. After the dinner was planned, ticket sales had closed & sponsors had donated, the COVID crisis began, and life as we knew it had to shut down. Despite the financial hardship cancelling a major fundraiser caused, Pickering kept faith, and remained positive and optimistic that everything would be okay. The community rallied in support, and donors graciously & generously gave despite the cancellation. Our world fundamentally changed, and with it need dramatically and significantly increased. Through the pandemic, Pickering and MCVC have worked tirelessly. MCVC is now coming up on the date that their second major fundraiser is generally scheduled for, with no end in sight to COVID. MCVC and other area nonprofits are going outside the box of conventional fundraising. MCVC recently began a monthly donor program. When donors pledge support, they will be sent a special Montgomery County Veterans Coalition mask.

Joe Shakeenab Donates to Preserve Mt. Olive Cemetery’s Legacy Statewide

Mt. Olive Cemetery is home to over twenty graves of U.S. Colored Troops as well as over a thousand people from the Clarksville African American community. “The struggle for those buried at Mt. Olive was real, and we must not forget that, or allow time to fade the importance of their struggle,” Arthur Nicholson, President of Mt. Olive, reminds us. “To that end we are committed to the legacy of their struggle and to speak for each of them through our efforts to make their story heard by preserving Mt. Olive Cemetery and their remains.” Mt. Olive’s mission is to preserve the Cemetery as well as to promote and ensure the preservation of African American history and culture in Clarksville. The community stepped up to pay for the cost of printing the brochures which are located for free around town. While a few thousand copies have been available across Clarksville in the past year, the effort to distribute statewide called for more funds. Local leader and retired veteran Joe Shakeenab donated the funds for the first 10,000 copies to go into Welcome Centers statewide. “I’m honored to contribute to the endeavors of Mount Olive Preservation Society in a significant way,” Shakeenab said. “Collectively, we must continue to support the preservation of history through advocacy, education, and by providing updated products.” Joe has a solid record of selfless service, especially in the Clarksville community. He is a Silver Life member of the NAACP and in 2014, he received the NAACP Award for Lifetime of Leadership and Community Service. He is a 33rd Degree Mason where he has worked in support of Lodge and Consistory with charitable programs such as Backpack for Kids, annual Thanksgiving baskets for the needy, and assisting the elderly for over 30 years in Clarksville and Oak Grove. In the spirit of the Volunteer State, Joe was honored as a TN Volunteer of the Year for Community Service in 2018, as the Montgomery County selectee. In 2019, he was presented a Resolution for Community Service by the TN House of Representatives. Wholeheartedly, he works to make our community better.

imberly Wiggins was recently inducted as President of Clarksville Rotary Club, marking the first time in the organization’s 100+ year history in Clarksville that an African American woman has held the office. The Sunrise, Sunset and Clarksville Rotary clubs all work together to raise money for projects that are beneficial to the community. In the last three years alone, the clubs have raised and donated approximately $1,000,000 to various projects.

Robert Huffman & Kimberly Wiggins

“I’ve been in Rotary for about four years now, I was brought in by Betty Burchett, who has been my mentor,” Wiggins said. “This is a huge honor and a big responsibility. I’ve been given an opportunity to sit at the table and help make decisions for the organization, and I want to bring others into this group who may not have thought they could join for one reason or another.” One of Wiggins’ goals will be to focus on making the local clubs more diverse. “It’s not just age, it’s ethnicity and categories of business, but I think age is the biggest one,” Wiggins said. “I love that I’m one of the younger people in the club. We’re always looking for fresh minds and fresh ideas. Age doesn’t matter. There is opportunity for everyone to serve our community.” 52 • VIP CLARKSVILLE MAGAZINE | HEALTH & BEAUTY 2020

CLARKSVILLE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

FIND YOUR WAY

“Our missions, really, is to engender hope by using evidence-based techniques.” -Dr. James M. Dodson VIP recently had the chance to talk with Dr. James M. Dodson, CEO of Clarksville Behavioral Health. Dr. Dodson has been practicing for 25 years and has been in the Clarksville community for since 2010. He approaches leadership with patience and vision, and tells VIP, “Our mission, really, is to engender hope by using evidencebased techniques.” He has earned degrees from Baylor University and FIT, a Vanderbilt University internship, as well as a fellowship in sleep medicine. Integrity, optimism, and usefulness are core values that drive him. Christian values are the foundation of his work, and he strives to approach clinical work with personal sensitivity while using evidenced-based approaches. Dr. Dodson’s work has concentrated in a variety of areas including: bariatrics, geriatrics, sleep medicine, pharmaceutical research, cognitive and personality testing, health psychology, and general psychotherapy.

providers of course prefer to have in person interactions. Fortunately, CBH was well ahead of the curve with telehealth preparedness. Having offered telehealth services long before the pandemic, the transition to COVID compliance was pretty seamless. Dr. Dodson tells VIP that telehealth allows providers to meet patients where they are, both literally and proverbially. Their website is easy to use, and their telehealth service, doxy.me, is a secure, HIPAA compliant platform. Patients log in to a confidential virtual waiting room, and then connect with their provider for their appointment. Dr. Dodson has noticed that the availability of an easy to navigate telehealth platform has helped reduce public health anxiety for CBH patients.

CBH has two offices, one in Clarksville and a second in Brentwood, and has played an instrumental roll in helping people cope with the anxieties of COVID-19.

CBH has many strong suits including: diagnostic testing for ADHD, autism, and memory challenges. CBH also performs the majority of evaluations for gastric surgeries and spinal chord stimulation evaluations for pain management. Additionally, CBH helps with medication management through their on-staff prescriber.

As a measure of caution, Dr. Dodson and his team have focused on telehealth forms of care. All of CBH’s providers utilize telehealth communications to some degree, with two of those providers entirely practicing via telehealth. Dr. Dodson tells VIP that research shows telehealth to be just as effective as traditional methods of practice. Dr. Dodson also tells VIP that under conventional circumstances

Not only does CBH care for individuals, CBH also protects our communities through providing public safety evaluations for over 30 counties, cities, and departments in Middle Tennessee. Their services extend to institutions like Vanderbilt University, Belmont University, Austin Peay State University, Clarksville Police Department, Clarksville Fire Department, and the Montgomery County Sheriffs Office.

When asked about future plans, Dr. Dodson says Montgomery County is an underserved community, and CBH is always looking to add providers. Since opening, CBH has consistently been functioning at a nearly maximum care capacity. Unfortunately, the process of adding a new provider can be unnecesarily lengthy. When a provider transfers practices, insurance companies require the provider must be recredentialed with the new practice even though the provider may be already credentialed with the insurance company, which is an expensive process that can take anywhere from three to six months. In fact, the proccess is so burdensome that CBH must use a credentialling company to navigate the long list of checks and balances Dr. Dodson and his team are more than happy to go through the process, because at the end of the day Dr. Dodson says, “We want Montgomery County taken care of.”

“Humor might not always be the best medicine, but it will do in a pinch.” -Dr. James M. Dodson CBH Clarksville is located at: 775 Weatherly Drive Suite F Clarksville, TN 37043

Feet: The Foundation to

Total Body Wellness Erin Beckett-Gland, owner of Hygeian Hand and Foot Refinery, has 24 years of experience in cosmetology. Originally beginning as a hair stylist, Erin quickly discovered her love of being a nail technician. As she learned to perfect pedicures, she took advantage of special training and found a niche and passion in nail care for clients with special circumstances.

caused my nail beds to be dark. That was wrong. Erin got the pink back into my nails. If you are reading this and have questions about her business let me just tell you, she is a miracle worker. I referred my sister, mother and father and they all love what she has done for them. The zero gravity chair, mink blanket and the neck warm are an added bonus.”

Erin earned her clinical podiatry medical assistant certificate and a Bachelor of Science in Podology, but chose not to work in the medical field. Erin chose to bring a middle ground to podiatry and nail care. She is trained in oncology nail care and focuses on bridging the gap between the podiatrist and the nail salon.

Erin tells VIP, “I am mentoring each tech added to provide the same high standards of care that this community is crying out for.” At the end of the day, educating clients, providing compassionate, and personal care is how Hygeian measures their success.

She tells VIP, “I love helping people overcome their fears and embarrassments of their hands and feet. A lot of times, people don’t know what services are available to help them. I guide them through the process of what needs to be done medically and then how I can help cosmetically.” Part of helping people overcome fears and reservations about others seeing their feet is treating clients in a private, clean, comfortable environment. Technicians have private, sanitized rooms to see patients and clients. Hygeian Hand and Foot Refinery also has zero gravity chairs to maximize relaxation. While she cannot treat or cure medical issues, Erin provides services while clients are under podiatry care and focuses on addressing discomfort and pain due to issues like excessively curved nails, dry and cracked heels, and loss of toenails. One of Erins Clients, Natasha, said, “I wish I had a picture of my feet before Erin got a hold of them. I had just gotten back from vacation and lost my entire big toenail, you read correctly my entire big toe nail, and the other on was on it’s way. Additionally, all my nails were brown because I had been told my skin pigmentation

Services such as toenail reconstruction, callus and cuticle refinement, uncurling of the nail plate, gentle post-surgical care and cosmetic maintenance are offered in a safe, gentle environment using medical-grade, sterilized single-use tools. Erin also offers a soakless option. Hygeian Hand and Foot Refinery has been open since January of 2019, and has received a warm reception. Erin and her team have changed the lives of their clients. All services at Hygeian Hand and Foot Refinery are performed with the highest quality nontoxic products. Erin and her team also offer spa manicure and pedicure services. Hygeian Hand and Foot Refinery is at 226B Dover Road, Clarksville. They are open every other Monday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m, and every other Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more, or book an appointment, call (931) 302-1064 or book online at: www.vagaro.com/hhafr or www.hygeianhandandfootrefinery.com

The Front Porch Community Block Party

Courtney Carpenter & Kelly Cobbs

Story & Photography by Tony Centonze The Front Porch on Highway 149 was the site of a recent lively community get together.

Tammy Stratton & Debi Ramos

“We have food trucks out here today, and we’ve been joined by some great folks from Relay for Life of Montgomery County, and the Clarksville Police Alumni Association,” Glenna Shelton said. “Max’s Hope Pet Rescue brought some cute pets that are looking to get adopted. We have a kid zone with bounce houses, and there are also volunteers getting into the dunk booth. This is a morale booster for our community. We wanted to throw a party and let families get out of the house and have something fun to do. Parents can drop their kids off at the fun zone and step inside to do a little shopping.”

Karsyn England

Rib Umm & Soul, and Fire Pit BBQ were on hand to serve up some great food. Rewind 94.3 brought the music. “We had a block party in March, right before Covid-19 took over,” Front Porch owner, Timothy Shelton said. “That event was a grand reopening for the shop, and it went over very well with the community. The shop has been open for about two years now, but I just took it over in November.

Pastor J. Dylan Proctor

“We want this place to have a family atmosphere, so we want to keep hosting events for the community. We’re going to get through all this. We’re already looking forward to another big event in early December.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clarkscille

Chris

Sarah

Kisha

“All kids need is a little help, a little hope, and someone who believes in them.” - Magic Johnson Big Brothers Big Sisters Clarksville is a three person power house with two separate programs, led by Executive Director Chris Buerck. Sarah Hedstrom leads the School Based Program, and currently works with three schools: Burt Elementary School, Minglewood Elementary School, Northeast Elementary School. This year BBBS is enrolling children in grades 2-5. Enrollments for the Community Based Program are continual, and Kisha Hamilton carefully screens volunteers to create perfect, lasting Matches between an adult mentor and a young person. Matches continue for at least one year, and can be continued for as long as the Big & Little would like. Overall, the average match length is 25.1 months. In the School Based Program, matches spend an hour together once a week during the school day. In the Community Based Program, typically time is spent together on the evenings and weekends and can be for as little as 2 hours per week, and beyond. The Community Based Program has different variables to account for, but it is all dependent on the interests of the Big & Little. HOW ARE LITTLES SELECTED? Children are recommended to the School Based Program through guidance counselors and teachers. In the Community Based Program, a parent or guardian usually reaches out to BBBS. 99% of children in the BBBS program experience food insecurity and 80% live in households with an annual income under $20,000.

BBBS expands a child’s horizons to see the different possibilities the future has to offer, and it does so in a supported, monitored, engaging and validating environment. At the time this article was penned, the program has 65 current matches and 17 children on the waitlist. As students start the school year, Chris & Sarah are anticipating an additional 20-30 students to be added to the School Based waitlist. HOW ARE MATCHES MADE? Interests are unique to a person, and BBBS Littles are no exception. When a volunteer signs up to be a Big, their interests, career, hobbies, and disposition are taken into careful consideration. Through a thorough but efficient interview process, BBBS is able to match Bigs to Littles that they will meaningfully connect with. Buerck says the ideal volunteer is anyone who has an hour per week and someone who is consistent. Unfortunately, the program constantly experiences a lack of male volunteers, and as a result, has a longer waiting list of male Littles waiting to be matched. In Buerck’s experience, men are often hesitant to volunteer because they’re afraid they’ll fail with the time commitment because they don’t realize how little time it actually takes. BBBS matches are painstakingly made and carefully considered. Bigs and Littles have similar interests and compatible personalities. If you’re an accountant, BBBS has Littles who might love math. The same goes for chefs, sports fans, book worms, podcasters and everyone in between.

64 • VIP CLARKSVILLE MAGAZINE | HEALTH & BEAUTY 2020

IT’S A MATCH! For the School Based Program each little has 3-5 available times of availability that their Big can choose from; dates and times vary for each little. The Big can choose the time each week that best works for them. When the Big arrives to the school, they will check in as a volunteer, and then meet their Little in an approved meeting area. Bigs are given an activity box with games and possible conversation starters. The Little & Big meet for 45 minutes, then the Big will walk the child back to class. The Big is a safe place for their Little, and the BBBS program wants to make sure that the Big has a safe place to seek mentorship and advice as well. BBBS checks in with mentors on a monthly basis to provide coaching and training, and is available for additional check ins if the Big needs. AN HOUR FOR A BIG & A LIFETIME FOR A LITTLE The difference a Big makes in a Little’s life is profound. Buerck tells VIP, “Part of the program’s success is the true friendship formed between the Big and the Little. BBBS is focused on one-to-one attention. It’s a volunteer program, and when the Little receives one-toone attention from someone who is volunteering their time because they want to be there, the little feels seen and worthy. Often when asked what they like most about their Big, Littles will simply say, “My big listens to me.” To sign up to volunteer, or to learn more, visit their website: www.bbbsclarksville.org

Wine Tasting & Election Party Story & Photography by Tony Centonze Red River Republican Women recently hosted a wine tasting at The Wonderland Cafe to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote. Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment on August 18, 1920. Senator Bill Powers & Rob Bateman

RRRW President Corinthia Elder had the honor of welcoming the masked and socially distanced crowd to the event.

Judge Katy Olita & Mac Edington

“We’re here celebrating an historic moment in American history,” Elder said. “We have a great crowd, and we’re excited for a great evening of food and wine, and the chance to honor those brave women who fought to change the law 100 years ago. Their efforts have had a profound impact on our society. “Tennessee was the final state to ratify the 19th Amendment, insuring its implementation and really paving the way for women who now command armies, lead fortune 500 companies, and whose leadership changes our world every day, in so many ways.
