A GALA OF GLORY

Servella Terry & Patricia Miller

STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE & ARLENE ROBERTS PHOTOGRAPHY Losing an important member of the community is always a difficult time, but for those whose lives were lived in service of others and who truly made a difference in the world around them, their loss is not something to mourn without hope—it’s a time to celebrate all that they were and to continue the work that they did. In an effort to do just that, Appleton HarleyDavidson hosted their first Motorcycle Gala on October 27, using the event to honor and celebrate the memory of the beloved Pastor Jimmy Terry, Sr., a special man whose life was a clear representation of selflessness and love. With all proceeds benefiting the Tabernacle Christian School, Pastor Terry’s passion for the youth was given a focus he would have loved to see, and attendees were given the opportunity to continue his efforts of feeding into the hearts, minds, and souls of the students who so greatly need love and guidance. Rolling out the Orange Carpet while their "paparazzi" Joe Padula welcomed guests as they entered the dealership and then got their photos taken by Arlene Roberts Photography, everyone was treated to the spectacle of having their drinks poured in a stunning display of dramatic flair and showmanship by aerial bartenders from Beyond Wings Circus, an elite team of aerial flyers and visual entertainment artists whose acts have gained them wide acclaim. An event attended by County Mayor Jim

Durrett and Mayor Kim McMillan as well as State Representative Joe Pitts, the Gala proved just what a presence Pastor Jimmy was in the community. While Pastor Terry's wife Mrs. Servella Terry felt the love all around her, singers performed, and a before-dinner prayer was led by Pastor Terry’s son, Jimmy Terry, Jr. The delicious meal was prepared by owner Danny Suiter, followed by a dessert bar along with beer donated by Budweiser. In business since 1952 and now in the hands of its fourth generation of family owners, Appleton Harley-Davidson has long been a company committed to supporting the needs of the community; and by hosting the Gala, owners Danny and Tia Suiter have shown that, even after his passing, Pastor Jimmy Terry, Sr., was a man whose journey in life rolled gloriously toward loving all and planting a seed. “The city of Clarksville is one of the most blessed cities there will ever be because it had Pastor Terry. He was more than just a pastor—he was a shepherd, and we were his flock,” says Tia. “He was everywhere all the time, even within the motorcycle clubs. He united our town and brought us all together, and we should be forever thankful that we live our lives in the community that he so richly blessed. His life was a testimony of great servanthood and leadership that made an impact on us all.”

STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT PHOTOGRAPHY SUBMITTED BY MARK HOLLEMAN

W

ith so many people working in the real estate business all across America, it can be hard to differentiate between them all and find one major thing that sets one apart from the rest. After all, the process of buying or selling a house is a pretty cut-and-dried deal, and working with one is the same as working with any other—right? Wrong. Depending on the person with whom you’re working, you can have an experience that completely sours you on the whole deal—making it a true ordeal that requires some time to get over and recover from—or one that’s a pleasurable and fulfilling moment in your life’s journey. That one person holding the title of Realtor can ease the process along and make you feel heard, make you feel like your needs are being taken care of, but it takes the right person to do that, with the right focus and the right passions in place—to see you as more than just another client, another commission to add to the books, another listing deal to wrap up. For longtime Realtor Mark Holleman, being that person is part of what drives him—well, that and the chocolate that’s admittedly one of his guilty pleasures. A fourth generation real estate agent, Holleman’s goal has always been not only to work with clients in the Clarksville area as they sought out the perfect home or to offer them his expertise in the selling process, but also to truly grow his community in ways that reached far beyond the simple purview of real estate. A passionate lover of people who follows the time-honored principle of the Golden Rule, one might say that Holleman has seen both sides of the line in people’s treatment in one another and the ways that it affects the rest of the world. A former reserve policeman who served for eight years, the Realtor has certainly witnessed far more than most people have, but his belief in the simple goodness of people and his desire to serve help in as many ways as possible has never wavered. Nor has his commitment to the community, and it’s plain to see from the sheer amount of involvement he has in local organizations as well as in creating outreach opportunities of his own that it’s more than just the real estate market that gets in Holleman’s head—and his heart. In fact, in addition to his team of talented Realtors at the firm, Holleman is part of another team, showing his spirited support of the remarkable kids of the Buddy Ball Special Needs Athletic League and taking them through downtown Clarksville on his very own trolley 10 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | November 2018

during the Clarksville Christmas Parade. And he puts the trolley in gear again during his all-men’s shopping trips, taking fifty-plus men to a local retail store to shop and then to dinner as part of a fundraising effort to raise money for underprivileged children in the area. Obviously, paying it forward in the community he loves is a theme here; and he shares that passion with the people with whom he works, engendering a love of Clarksville and all it has to offer by getting out there and showing it off, to the point of taking his agents on regular outings for lunch and then to a local point of interest or an historic site in or around Clarksville. Simple though it might be, it’s proven to be effective in teaching his agents just what makes Clarksville unlike anywhere else—and that, by extension, translates to the clients, showing them how special a place this is so that they truly feel welcomed home when they close on the purchase of a house. Another of Holleman’s passion projects is working toward the completion of the Greenway that runs from one end of town to the other along the bank of the Cumberland River. No small task to undertake, his efforts for the project have resulted in much needed grant money used to purchase plots of land crucial to the completion of the Greenway for his fellow community members to enjoy. “My goal is to do my part to continue to improve Clarksville so that our kids don't want to leave and doing my best to make Clarksville a better place to live,” Holleman says. With so much love for his community, it’s no wonder that Holleman is so successful in his career. He’s all heart—and that’s what closes the deal. Holidays are a great time for a family meeting

I

bet most of your family holiday dinners are a lot like mine. Sometimes the family dynamics require a poker face and sometimes you feel like you just pick the winning horse at the Kentucky Derby. Either way, win or lose improve your odds by having a family meeting. A family meeting is an event that gives you a winning hand by bringing family members together to check in on your financial state and create a vision of how they will collectively manage the financial assets and health needs to benefit you in the future. The focus of the family meeting is YOU and providing your family with the needed chips to play with the big elephant in the room. How are we, as a family, going to handle when Mom or Dad is not healthy? Who is going to handle the financial decisions and personal issues, make joint decisions, and plan for the future?” Family meetings also enable the members of your family to understand, before life’s events take their course, by having these important conversations with your family. Typically, family meetings include anyone who is, or will be, affected by the decisions made at the meeting. Ultimately, the goal of family meetings is to ensure health needs and wealth transitions are managed effectively on your behalf. In addition to loved ones, these meetings should include your financial advisor and your attorney when possible. The strategic family meeting should include these important objectives. • • • •

The values or life lessons you would like to pass on to your family. Your professional contacts that will benefit your family. The legacy that you would like to leave to your beneficiaries. Your health wishes and final requests at the end of life.

In a survey conducted by the US Trust, only 34% of parents agree that their children will be able to handle their inheritance and share their wishes, concerns and financial needs. Over 66% of parents do not disclose their finances or their wishes for when they get sick or an untimely death should occur because they do not feel it is necessary.

As a financial advisor for many years, it is my hope that this number will change. I believe strongly in educating your family with your financial and health wishes. Now please hear me out. I am not saying to show them all the cards in your hand but I am saying you need to invite them to the table to let them know that your financial house is in good order and show them your face cards. The face cards are your doctor, pastor, financial advisor, attorney, insurance agent, power of attorney and executor. These are required for your family to have a winning hand in your financial future. I have heard in conversations with clients over the years the following comment. “I do not have my financial house in order and I am just not ready to work on it or talk about it!” WHO IS? But one thing I can guarantee you is that one day you’re going to die and making the best holiday dinner or buying the perfect Christmas gift is no excuse for not planning. We all know that communication is the key! I know it is difficult to talk about your final days and life after your gone but having meetings with your key loved ones is the perfect present that will be appreciated and cherished by the entire family during one of the hardest times of their life. Lastly, our goal at Dowdy Financial Group is to focus on our client’s families because we have experienced firsthand how life can be a gamble and our game plan is to make sure that we help with every event that life brings your way. I hope this information was helpful for you to get the conversation started and if you do not have a Family Financial Advisor please give our team a call at 931-919-0947. Enjoy your holidays and cherish this family time by giving them what is most important, YOU. (Not, your delicious pumpkin pie or Eggnog!) Happy Holidays!

Breast Cancer Awareness Night STORY + PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCAS RYAN CHAMBERS Amity Salon, one of downtown Clarksville’s newest salons, opened its doors in support of women and families who have been and are currently going through their battle with breast cancer. While the night was an opportunity for families and friends to be there for one another, Amity Salon also made it possible for people to donate to the Breast Cancer Reseach Foundation. There were giveaway drawings and even some treats available to all who made donations to this very special cause. It was their way of celebrating the strength of theses courageous women and the individual stories they have to tell. Amity Salon and its owner, Tonya DeRose, do so much for the local community. The Hayloft Fall Barn Sale STORY + PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE The Hayloft at Port Royal recently held its Fall Barn Sale, a 3-day event which featured live music, the return of the Barnside Cafe, and a great shopping experience with more than 50 vendors on hand. Shirley Thomas, owner of the Hayloft, was greeting customers at the door. The parking area was full, and vendor booths of all types filled the barn and the immediate surrounding area. “We had a gorgeous weekend,” Thomas said. “We've been in business here since the fall of 2012, and it just keeps getting better. We usually have two events like this each year, but this year we added a Christmas-themed event that will take place in November.” Thomas says when she's not busy with arts and crafts fairs, the facility is available for weddings. There is also space available to rent for birthday parties, baby showers, and other activities. Amanda & Erin Dalrymple

HOW MUCH IS CLUTTER COSTING YOU? SIMPLE SYSTEMATIC SPACES

let’s do the math! Clutter creates a significant financial impact. Your home’s value divided by the square footage = value of each square foot (in Clarksville the average is $141/sq ft). Determine how many square feet are unusable due to clutter, multiply it by the value of each square foot. This is the cost to store your clutter.

Get Your Mind Out of the Clutter STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

We all have them: the junk drawers crammed to overflowing with odds and ends that have become almost unidentifiable without forensic assistance…the closets stuffed to the point of suffocation with clothes that went out of style so long ago that now they’re back in again or that we’re going to fit into again—one of these days, when we finally reach the goal weight…the garages that haven’t been able to hold a car since we moved into the house ten years ago…Whatever it is, wherever it is, we’re all guilty of having those spaces that really have no rhyme or reason for being, that we’ll get around to organizing ONE DAY, when we have the time or the wherewithal to deal with them. But most people don’t ever actually manage to do it as it can feel like too much of a hassle to fit into our everyday lives that are already too crammed full of things to take on one more task that could take a back seat to something more important. Really, though, all that clutter and disorganization isn’t healthy. It’s a source of stress, and countless scientific studies have proven it. Even when you’re not consciously aware of it, that state of disarray is a toxic presence that’s sucking the joy out of your life. It’s keeping you mired down in stuff and needlessly holding onto the past, and shedding it all will not only clean up your space—it’ll help you feel like you’ve gone to a spa and gotten detoxed from the outside in. Which is where Stephanie Belanger of S3 by Steph (Simple Systematic Spaces, hence the S-cubed) comes in. Using her wicked skills to come in and “detox” her clients’ spaces, Belanger is a veritable magician, an unbiased eye who can

walk into a room and assess the situation to understand what needs to happen and how to accomplish it in a way that is maintainable for her clients. And boy, does the sight of clutter energize her. “I love decluttering!” laughs the former Canada native, who moved to Clarksville in 2015. Encouraged by her family and friends to tap into her talent for turning madness into order, she launched S3 in early 2018 and has been decluttering the locals ever since. “I love finding new ways to make spaces increasingly functional, which ultimately allows my clients to have the time to do the things they love. A lot of people simply don’t have the time, the inclination, or the skill set to implement systems for keeping order in their homes or offices; but creating order from chaos gets me excited!” she goes on. Offering her services to assist with clutter management, downsizing, space planning, and the overall organization of any necessary area as well as home staging and the endless tasks of packing and unpacking related to moving in or out of a home, Belanger also offers guidance by designing personalized ‘do it yourself ’ action plans for her clients to follow on their own. “My mission is to relieve stress by being of service to anyone wanting to establish and preserve order as well as increasing functionality in their spaces,” she says. From chaos to order, she’s cleaning up her community, one space at a time. For more information on S3 by Steph, call (931) 553-3360 or visit www.s3bysteph.com. JUNIOR AUXILIARY OF HOPKINSVILLE'S

Annual Charity Ball STORY + PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE This year's Hopkinsville Junior Auxiliary Charity Ball was held at the Hopkinsville Golf & Country Club and was sponsored by Jennie Stuart Health and Planter's Bank. Hopkinsville Junior Auxiliary selected the Aaron McNeil House Backpack Program to benefit from this year’s event. The backpack program sends food-insecure children at local elementary schools home with a bag full of food each week. “We are helping fund the program, and we hoped to raise enough money that they will expand the program into another school,” said Karlee Daniel.

Adele Cline & Joseph Horne

More than 100 people came out for an evening of appetizers, dancing, and live music from Princeton, Kentucky's Cat Daddy Band. There was also a live auction with more than 100 great items donated by individuals, businesses and organizations from throughout the city.

Attendees also had an opportunity to enter and win great prizes from several raffles. After dinner, guests enjoyed an auction which featured items like a Browning Sweet Sixteen and a very special Argentinean Dove Hunt.

VillaGe Life

STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

etting older comes with its share of challenges and concerns, not the least of which is living on your own as health or mobility issues become more difficult or the task of taking care of a home on your own becomes too great. Regardless, the desire to live life to its fullest and not feel as though you’ve lost your independence or vitality is shared by everyone of all ages; and in the golden years of life, it’s certainly something that you should still have to look forward to. After all, you’ve earned it—you’ve raised a family, you’ve contributed to your community, and you’ve spent countless years working to build yourself up financially. Now should be a time to enjoy all that you’ve invested in the world, and The Villages at the River Club is designed to do just that. Officially opened to residents in November 2018, The Villages is a luxury style retirement community that strives to offer something unique to Clarksville and the surrounding areas, and it takes simply a tour of the spectacular grounds to know they’ve accomplished just that. “We offer an all-inclusive, maintenance-free and worry-free lifestyle for all of our residents,” says Meagan Smith, Executive Director of The Villages at the River Club. “We’re not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ type of community, which truly separates us from all of the other communities people have come to know, and some of the reasons for that is the resortstyle living we offer our residents and the location we have, positioned on a golf course with breathtaking views and adaptability,” Smith goes on. “We want to inspire a sense of community and upscale living. It’s

beautiful here, and being surrounded by beauty in a place where people are happy to live is good for everyone’s health—no matter their age.” Keeping their residents happy and healthy isn’t simply dependent on offering luxurious aesthetics and great amenities, however. It’s also dependent on having a staff that is passionate about the work that they do. “Like all of the staff here, my passion is people, and all of us truly listen to what our residents want and need and help facilitate that,” Smith explains. “I believe that people can see and feel our desire to give them the very best life possible and how much we love being with them. They can see that all of the staff at The Villages is ready to make the community the very best that it can be. We have fun and genuinely enjoy what we do, which shines through.” Offering 76 suites as well as a number of individual cottages planned to break ground that will have two-car garages, The Village also has an assisted living community and a separate memory care community within the community to provide care for those residents who need more regular attention and assistance. Clearly, this is one community designed to make the golden years truly golden—and they’ve got the perfect view to make them shine bright. The Villages at the River Club is located at 1176 Warfield Boulevard, Clarksville, Tennessee 37043. For more information, call (931) 552-7455 or visit www.villagesattheriverclub.com.

Amanda Cherry and her team from Clarksville's YMCA, along with supporters from dozens of local organizations, recently gathered to celebrate members of YMCA's After Breast Cancer (ABC) program. It is a free program for survivors of breast cancer in which about 49 to 50 ladies participate each year. “This is our 8th year for our fundraiser--Tickle Me Pink,” Cherry said. “We outgrew our first venue, so now we're at the Wilma Rudolph Event Center, and this year we expected about 270 people. Q-108's Gretchen Cordy was our host, and survivors shared their stories. Staff from Sango Pharmacy shared some ways to make safer choices.” “Our members receive personal training with a Pink Ribbon personal trainer,” Cherry said. “They meet in small groups to address the mental aspects of their spiritual healing. They do nutritional counseling, lymphedema education, and offer free wigs if they are needed.”. Angela Piekielko & Talia Roder

Tammy Thrash & Jamie Martin

“It's really about finding other survivors in the community and connecting with them. Our survivors love the community aspect of the program.”. Anyone interested in the program should call the YMCA and ask for information about the After Breast Cancer program.

TINY HOUSE

BIGcharm

STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HOUSELENS While it might be considered tiny by today’s standards, the so-called “tiny” home featured by A Tennessee Tiny House for use as an Airbnb and VRBO property is far from what one might envision in the wake of the tiny house movement sweeping the nation in recent years. Rather, as a home whose 900 square feet of interior spaces are accommodating and airy enough to hold a full-sized bedroom and bath, living room, kitchen, and dining space as well as a loft area with two double beds, the charm this fully renovated 1923 farmhouse holds is huge, and renters are falling in love with it in a major way. Stewarded by Clarksville resident Richard Dixon and his wife, Shannon, the diminutive home located in a peaceful, quiet area of Clarksville where the sounds of chirping birds and nature are the soundtrack is easily a natural attraction to anyone looking to get away from it all without having to sacrifice space, headroom, or modern convenience. Artfully blending the best details of the original farmhouse with contemporary elements to achieve a home that feels old and enchanting yet still up-to-date, the interior is indeed a cozy space with warm woods and tons of windows that spill in the light as well as décor selected by local designer Joni Haston. In deference to the beauty of its locale, the home also features two deck spaces and a fire pit perfect for hosting campfires or watching sunrises and sunsets paint their way across the skyline, and it is the very uniqueness of it all that has made A Tennessee Tiny House a frequent host to travelers as well as those who just want a charming little place to break away from everyday life for one memorable night. “We’ve found through Airbnb that serving people gives us life,” says Richard, who first stumbled across the property while looking for real estate investment opportunities for his father. Having fallen in love with the old farmhouse and its picturesque setting near an old farm and tobacco barn, Richard and Shannon knew they had a treasure and set about renovating the house with the help of contractor Doug Nail, though they hadn’t quite determined what its ultimate purpose would be. “When we finished it, we thought about renting it, but where’s the fun in that?” he says with a laugh. “Simply renting it out doesn’t really require any interaction with people, but we love hosting and being hospitable, so we love to find out what the occasion for our guests’ stay might be. We try to go the extra mile and personalize their experience by finding out about things like their favorite snacks and their interests,” he said.

“We’ve found through Airbnb that serving people gives us life."

-Richard Dixon

With such a focus on creating a guest experience, it only stands to reason that the Dixons’ adorable little home has received such wide acclaim since it was officially opened in 2017, garnering five stars with Airbnb and earning the rank of Superhost, the highest rating achievable. Little wonder, then, that the house is often booked three months in advance and that its reputation has captured attention nationwide. With such success in their hands, the Dixons knew that there was more opportunity to be had, and they have since taken on a collaboration with a local caterer who approached them to design a tiny home for his own use as well as beginning work on the renovation of a home at 3612 Rossview Road. Originally built in 1952 and surrounded by 100 acres of beautiful Montgomery County farmland, the 1700-square-foot prairie house will eventually become another quiet escape for those searching for a way to reconnect with peace, quiet, and the endlessly vast charm of days gone by. COMMUNITY REPAIR STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

Whether you’re the owner of a home or a business, the structure you occupy says a lot about you— your place in life, the pride you take in your company or your family, all of it. It’s one of the most important investments you can make, and keeping it looking its best is one of the ways you communicate the priority you place on making the most of that investment. From the quality of the paint on the exterior to the shingles on your roof and even the seals on your windows and around your doorways, all of it affects the way you function in your space and the level of pride you feel you can take in it. It’s more than simple aesthetics, although that certainly plays a role in sending the kind of message you want to relay to people. It’s about feeling accomplished in where you are—at home or at work— and the way that creates a happier, healthier environment for you and the ones you love. From residential to industrial and commercial clients, Peterson Properties, LLC in Clarksville is a company that takes care of every last detail, from new construction contracting services to cleanup and restoration projects after a major mishap or disaster. No matter the seeming “insignificance” of the job, the team of licensed pros who wield the paintbrushes,

takes pride in our work,” says Heidi Mangnall, who co-owns the company she helped found in 2009. “We love working with our local community; and our employees are all militaryaffiliated, so we pride ourselves on serving those who serve our country,” Mangnall continues. “In all that we do, whether it’s repairing a home after a storm has damaged it or getting a house up-to-date and ready to put on the market for one of our clients, our goal is to put our customers at ease in knowing that the job is being done right by people who care and at a fair price.”

heft the beams, and seal in the windows to complete the missions they have on the books take particular pride in what they do, knowing that they’re not just doing a job—they’re making a difference that their clients will come home to each and every day. “We got tired of seeing the people in our community get taken advantage of by ‘fly-bynight’ contractors who are not local and don’t know the area and don’t feel any connection to the people they work for, so we decided to start a female-owned construction company that would be different—one that actually

Reflective of that—especially with regard to their desire to serve the military community and other government employees—Peterson offers discounted rates for military personnel as well as city and county workers. Clearly, Peterson Properties, LLC is in the business for more than just the profits. They’re in it for the way it builds their community—literally and figuratively. And from small fixes to major repairs, they’re doing just that, one house and one business at a time. Peterson Properties, LLC is located at 301 College Street Suite B, Clarksville, Tennessee 37040. The team at Bella Medical Spa had a very busy day recently as they hosted their annual Fall Open House. Dr David Boles, Owner/Physician, talked about some of the services offered at the popular spa which has operated in Clarksville since 2005.

Dr. David Boles & Tina Mangrum

“We offer lots of non-surgical procedures,” Dr. Boles said. “Our goal is to offer everything that can help the skin look younger and better without surgery. We do laser treatments, skin tightening treatments with ultrasound-type devices, water-assisted liposuction, facials, peels, and massage. We even do genital rejuvenation, so we provide a broad spectrum of services, and we sell many skin care products.” Throughout the day, the spa had a steady flow of visitors, and the phones never seemed to stop ringing.

Tori Proctor & Theresa Grubbs

Cia Bailey & Lauren Adan

Kelsey Harvey took a well-deserved break from the phone to talk about the event. “We do this every year,” Harvey said. “It's typically the best pricing of the year on all of our services. It's a pre-pay event, so our clients come in and pay for future services. It's also a good day for education. Our Product and Service Reps attend this event, so they, as well as our providers, were present to answer questions about all that we offer.”

hen it comes to countertops, there are actually a wide range of options available—not only in materials, but also in colors and finishes. No longer is the look and feel of your kitchen dependent on the rainbow-like fan of laminates that once dominated the counter culture. In fact, depending on your style preferences, you could easily have a prep space that looks like a Michelinstarred chef ’s dream, even if you’re working on a line cook’s budget.

Appearances aside, one thing to consider is how you use the space and how much time or money you’re willing to invest in maintaining that spectacular surface. Is yours a household that’s prone to staining and spilling? Do you do a lot of chopping, or do you leave all the slicing and dicing to the local takeout place you have on speed dial? If your countertops will be getting a lot of heavy use, it’s wise to choose a solid surface material like granite or quartz that requires less upkeep over time and is resilient enough to stand up for itself. “Granite and quartz are extremely durable, and using them for the kitchen countertops is one of the best ways to update the look of your home that’s beautiful and stylish,” says Amy Gao, manager of National Stone World in Clarksville.

In business since 2005, National Stone World has become an area leader for its level of customer service, the quality of its work, and the range of colors and patterns of the slabs they keep in stock. “People appreciate that we take care of them and that we make sure we take care of the details and get everything right. That’s very important in what we do, from the fabrication and cutting to the installation,” says Gao, who might work for her brother Hong, who owns the shop, but holds enough of her own expertise to know which types of material and which colors will work best in a space. “I look at the color of the cabinets, the colors of the paint in the house, the color of the flooring—all of that helps me suggest which color quartz or granite will look the best in a client’s home, and people appreciate that we can help them make that kind of selection and take the time to learn what they need.” It’s that level of personal attention that keeps their customers satisfied, and their success…carved in stone. MAKE HEALTHY CHOICES BROUGHT TO YOU BY TENNOVA HEALTHCARE – CLARKSVILLE Most health insurance plans have a deductible requirement—a predetermined amount of healthcare expenses that must be covered before the plan begins paying the majority of (if not all) expenses related to necessary medical care. If you have put off scheduling prescribed care, annual check-ups or recommended screenings, it would be wise to check your deductible status and plan benefits. This can be an ideal time to access healthcare services if you have already paid your deductible in full. The key is to obtain all the health services you need before December 31, because with the New Year comes a new deductible. If you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) – check your balance. These accounts, which hold pre-tax dollars set aside to pay for healthcare-related expenses, must be depleted by the end of the year or the money is forfeited. This adds another incentive to schedule services to ensure your hard-earned dollars are spent, not lost. Schedule your services now so there is enough time to have the necessary test or procedure completed before the end of the year. Getting everything squared-away by early December will help ensure the services you receive are considered part of your 2018 coverage. Every health plan is different. It is important to know how your plan works so you can get the most from your benefits. Volunteer Auxiliary Charity Golf Classic STORY + PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE Tennova Healthcare – Clarksville Volunteer Auxiliary recently hosted its annual Charity Golf Classic at Clarksville Country Club to benefit Camp Willow Creek. Sandy Wooten, Tennova's Director of Volunteer Services, spoke about the purpose of the event. “We've held this tournament for more than 20 years,” Wooten said. It is sponsored by our volunteer auxiliary, which is a non- profit organization, and all of the money we've raised helps fund Camp Willow Creek, a grief counseling camp for kids.” The camp is organized by Tennova Hospice, which is free to all children of hospice patients as well as other children in the community who have lost a parent, sibling or grandparent. “We had14 teams and a total of 56 golfers this year,” Wooten said. “We also had many sponsors from this community and all around Middle Tennessee. This year's master sponsor was Gateway Vanderbilt Cancer Treatment Center. Thanks to everyone's generous support, we will probably raise more than $22,000 for Camp Willow Creek.”

STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT The way you function at home is largely affected by the way your home functions, but if you can’t relax and enjoy your surroundings because something is in disrepair or just doesn’t feel comfortable because of lack of flow, an outdated appearance, or even a lack of energy efficiency, all of that makes home—a place that SHOULD be your sanctuary—somewhere you dread coming. Unfortunately, getting everything in order or whipping it all back into shape isn’t something that most people are equipped to do on their own. They can’t repair the leaky roof or add on the sunroom they’ve always dreamed of having—which is where Curtis Merrell and his team at Merrell Home Improvement come in to save the day. Offering everything from foundation repairs to roofing and everything in between, Merrell knows the ins and outs of every square inch of a home; and clients have been coming to him for his expertise for all things home repair and renovation since 1989, knowing that he can handle it all and complete the project

on time, on budget, and with the highest quality of workmanship. Whether they want additions, sunrooms, DrySpace vinyl screen rooms, traditional screen rooms, patio covers, decking, composite decks, remodeling services, siding replacement, installation of vinyl or composite windows, or any of the other various specialties that Merrell provides his clients, the people of Clarksville know that his is a company synonymous with excellence—and their home will benefit from his expert touch. “Most people need me when they want to update or improve their home, to repair an issue or prevent future repairs, to add energy efficiency, or simply when they want to make their outdoor living spaces and the time they spend at home more enjoyable and relaxing,” Merrell says. So relax and let the experts handle the hassle, then come home to a place you love again. Merrell Home Improvement is located at 445 Alfred Thun Road, Clarksville, Tennessee 37040. Hundreds came out recently to enjoy a day of art featuring 3D Chalk artists at Downtown Commons. The event was sponsored by Art Link Clarksville, a free creative arts program for the children and youth of Clarksville and the surrounding area, whose mission is to “ignite passion and build character through creativity.”

Bethany Obendorfer & Corbin Drawdy

The event featured professional artists Zach Herndon, Jessi Lindsey Queen, and Tonya Reese Youngberg demonstrating their amazing 3D Chalk Art techniques. Some lucky, budding artists also got to join in the fun by preregistering for their own 3' x 3' square of sidewalk space, where they were allowed to create their own works of art, and compete with others in the chalk art contest. Blazin' Soul Food, and Not Just Lemonade were among vendors providing food and beverages throughout the day. Artist Olasubomi Aka Bashorun was painting, and several other groups, and artisans brought their special talents to Downtown Commons for a day of entertainment, fun and creativity. Rafael Rios set up at Downtown Commons recently to continue a tradition that he started when he lived in Texas. Each October, the talented photographer offers a free photoshoot for survivors of breast cancer, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “Today, we are raising awareness for breast cancer survivors and fighters,” Rios said. “I do this event every year, this is my third year. It's a free photoshoot, and it's available to all breast cancer survivors. There is absolutely no cost to the ladies who participate.” Rios has been personally impacted by breast cancer, and therefore takes great pride in being aboe to offer this free service to so many brave survivors. “I enjoy meeting with everyone and sharing their stories,” Rios said. “I started doing this when I lived in San Antonio, Texas. My wife's mon is a breast cancer survivor. I lost an aunt to the disease, and had an uncle who battled the disease as well. So, this is very heartfelt for us. The first two years were an amazing experience. This is my first year providing this service in Clarksville.”

STORY + PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE Screaming Eagle Ready Mix is a sponsor of the 2018 Clarksville Walk to End Alzheimer's. While preparing for this year's walk, Screaming Eagle's Duane King had an Alzheimer's Walk folder on his desk. That's when he found out that one of his employees, Robert Ashabranner, had a personal connection to the cause. Ashabranner shared the story of his mom Stella, who is in the early stages of the disease, with King, and now their work relationship has evolved into a friendship. King decided to have one of the company's concrete trucks lettered with the Alzheimer's Association logo and phone number on both doors and the front of the truck. He sent Ashabranner to Fastsigns for the installation of the new decals. Ashabranner was completely surprised. “I've been with Screamin Eagle for two years now. It's the best company I've ever worked for,” Ashabranner said. “My mom's 71 and at the very first stage of Alzheimer's, so we are in for a long hard road. All the signs are there, so we are meeting with specialists now. “Mom could remember everything, now she doesn't even know her own phone number. It's shocking to see her refer to the washing machine as the laundry basket or the kitchen table. But, I can play old music, and she can tell me who sang it.” Cindy Hancock, Brenda Mendez and other members of this years' Walk to End Alzheimer's organizing committee were on hand for the unveiling, and to see Ashabranner's reaction. The 7th Annual Community C.A.R.E.S. Walk & Expo recently took place at Liberty Park. C.A.R.E.S. is an acronym for Community Advocating Resources for Every Special Citizen, and each year it connects special needs families with qualified service providers in the area. “This year we have more than 60 vendors,” Trish Hannah said. “I'm not sure how many walkers participated, but a good day was had by all. It's always a fun morning, from the start to registration, to the stretches, and then the countdown, which is followed by a 1-mile walk for health and wellness. After the walk, everyone comes back to enjoy some free food and a fantastic silent acution. It's a great example of people coming together to create a welcoming special needs community.”

Cheryl Moss, Deanne Williams & Cheryl Lankford

Kelly & Paul Cioccia

“Clarksville Association for Down Syndrome (CADS) organizes the event,” Hannah said. “The funds raised go back into the program so we can offer free programs to the special needs community. We partner with Clarksville Parks & Recreation. We also offer Technology for Teachers, andwe host monthly meetings for our families. We are working on opening a clubhouse to accommodate members of the special needs community so we can offer all of these programs under our own roof.”

Loves Lights A Tree STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

C

ancer is, in its very essence, an insidious disease, a merciless foe that strikes with impunity, respecting neither age nor race nor creed. It sees no sex, takes note of no histories or pedigree, but instead threatens to invade the bodies, the minds, and the lives of those it touches. And rather than simply taking one shape or claiming one single identity, it is reckless and without boundaries, forging ahead like an army that multiplies and invades without intent of being stopped. Unfortunately for many, the invading army of cancer—whether found in the breast, the ovaries, the kidneys, the liver, the brain, the prostate, the bones…too many to count, too many to name, too many to think about—is a battle hard fought and tragically lost. For many, however, there is an increasing amount of hope that the fight is a winnable one as the efforts of medical research and modern advances in technology have led to groundbreaking treatments and procedures that not only detect cancer earlier but also eradicate the disease before it has progressed beyond hope. In an effort to raise awareness and the necessary funding to further research and the developments of treatments, organizations such as the American Cancer Society hold countless fundraisers and events. And at times when family and friends are so at the fore of our hearts and our minds as they are at Christmas, the desire to honor, remember, and—above all—fight for those who have been lost to cancer or are in the midst of a battle is all the more important. Begun in 1989 by Judge William O. Beach when he lit the first lights for the very first ceremony that would ever after be known as Love

Lights a Tree for the American Cancer Society, the massive tree that illuminated the facade of the historic antebellum Smith-Trahern Mansion in Clarksville is now a tradition for honoring and remembering loved ones who have fought cancer, each candle bearing a name and a story of courage, faith, and a life lived with bravery. “Love Lights a Tree is a special way to honor or remember loved ones, and the contribution of purchasing lights helps the American Cancer Society provide help to those in Montgomery County who need assistance,” explains Chairperson Lynne Griffey. Each light glows with a hope for a brighter tomorrow even as they glow with a reminder that the fight must go on until the lights are finally lit in a show of victory. Now in its 29th year, Love Lights a Tree for the American Cancer Society continues on in its mission of funding and finding a cure for cancer—in whatever forms it might take. Located this year at Tennova Healthcare, the tree lighting will take place December 2 at 5:00 p.m. in a ceremony that will feature the naming of the event’s honorary chairperson—a position granted to a child or adult who has shown grace and strength even in the face of cancer. For whether young or old, rich or poor, man or woman, those with an inner light to shine are to be honored here—and the tree will glow brilliant and strong as we continue to give and continue to fight for the ultimate gift of life lived healthy and long and bright. Mail all light purchase checks and honorary chairperson nominations to Lynne Griffey, 1232 Willow Bend Dr., Clarksville, TN 37043 or lynnegriffeyart@ gmail.com or Judy Castleberry, 345 Arkadelphia Rd., Clarksville, TN 37040 or CastleberryJ@gmail.com. TABERNACLE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

Fall Festival STORY + PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE Tabernacle Christian School held its Fall Festival recently with a carnival atmosphere that featured games, pony rides, cake walks, great music and food.. Principal Patricia Miller took a moment to share her thoughts on the event. “This is our annual Fall Festival,” Miller said. “What makes this so special is that our Student Council organizes this each year. The festival is an opportunity for our students to learn about leadership responsibility and giving back to others.” The students created games for the event, there were bounce houses, and a live DJ. Tents were set up where parents prepared and sold a variety of delicious foods—everything from freshly grilled items to baked goods.

Jason & Nikesha Segars

“The students put a lot of work into this festival, and they seemed to have a lot of fun,” Miller said.” All of the parents came out to support them. We prayed that the rain would hold off, but the night was already a success despite the threatening weather.. We have great families here, and we are blessed with whatever God brings us.”

Trigg County Country

Ham Festival STORY + PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE The 42nd Annual Trigg County Country Ham Festival featured 6 days of family-friendly activities beginning on a Tuesday with the Trigg County Quilters at the Janice Mason Art Museum and ending on Sunday when the petting zoo and the carnival at West Cadiz Park came to a close. This year's event had something for everyone: rock climbing, Swifty Swine pig racing, giant bubbles, hula hooping, a tractor display, a car show, and a magic show by Mark Comley. In addition to numerous food choices, festival-goers were surrounded by great music throughout the event. Justin Reynolds, Queeva, Josh Cristina and more each took their turn on stage. Saturday's performances included Dry Creek Band, Ryan Kinder, Sandra Lynn, and country music supergroup Shenandoah on the WKDZ Renaissance Stage. Becky Williamson & Lauren Atcher

Of course the star of the festival is always the fantastic Trigg County Ham. Soon after the Hog Calling contest, (suspiciously) there were a myriad of events like Trigg County's Best Country Ham Biscuit Competition, the Country Ham Show, and Kentucky's Largest Ham & Biscuit.

Bob Sholly & Geoff Baggett

BONDS STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSICA TRAVIS PHOTOGRAPHY

Being an “influencer” is something that’s recently risen in the vernacular of American culture, especially with the constant use of social media that so heavily impacts the trends around us. And while some might hope to become a social media influencer to further their careers and boost their following, 31 year-old Kaitlyn Bonds uses her personal social media time to promote the fun, unique businesses of the Clarksville community she’s grown to love as her own since moving here in 2007. As a woman whose professional life is centered on growing the community through her work as a Realtor and the Director of Social Media Engagement with Coldwell Banker Conroy, Marable & Holleman, her hobbies and her career path seem perfectly in alignment, making her all the more successful in understanding the needs of the clients she works with and giving her greater passion to effect a change in the lives of the people around her. “In my career, I meet new people everyday and have the opportunity to touch them in a positive way as they start new chapters in their lives through purchasing or selling a home. Having the opportunity to walk that journey with them is amazing. I also work with an incredible company that does a lot in the community to help those in need,” Bonds says. “In that way, the opportunity to help others in my career goes way beyond representing my clients, and I love all the opportunities I have to make a difference,” she goes on. As a social media specialist, Bonds has a keen eye for recognizing how and when to capture attention, which makes her especially effective in inciting community growth and economic progress. “As a Realtor in

Clarksville, I’m able to use my voice and the voice of the Clarksville Association of Realtors to stand behind Clarksville as we continue to grow, effecting positive changes and pushing development to better the lives of those who live in our community,” she explains. Even with so much going on virtually, real-time networking is still a crucial tool in forging her career, and joining Clarksville Young Professionals has given her the opportunity she needs to do just that. “As a young professional, you don’t always have a clear view of your career path, but organizations like CYP provide an engaging and nurturing atmosphere for young professionals to network, further their careers, and grow as leaders and members of the community,” she says. “Being a member is a great way to surround yourself with other professionals and learn different points of view, and that’s important to becoming a greater success.”

“... the opportunity to help others in my career goes way beyond representing my clients, and I love all the opportunities I have to make a difference.”

STORY + PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE Billy Atkins & Jim Manning

Clarksville Country Club was the site of the recent Legends Bank 2nd Annual Charity Golf Scramble to benefit United Way of the Greater Clarksville Region.

Bart Lynn & Lamar Clift

“We are proud to host this United Way Game Changer golf scramble,” Legends Bank's Britney Campbell said. “We invited a lot of our corporate sponsors for a really fun day on the golf course.” Campbell said that to make the most of the “Game Changer” theme, organizers added lots of fun things for golfers to do that aren't normally found in a typical golf tournament. “The tournament was fun, but more importantly, it will benefit United Way of Clarksville,” Campbell said. “We were honored to work with Ginna (Holleman) and her team, and we had a lot of volunteers at the tournament to help raise funds.” Campbell said that18 teams were signed up to play, and there was a silent auction. The goal was to raise $9,000 or more. Britney Campbell & Ginna Holleman

“We are incredibly grateful for the tremendous support of Legends Bank, and all they do not just for United Way, but for the community,” United Way's Ginna Holleman said. “They truly change the game and create such an impact in so many different lives. We couldn't do what we do without their support and that of all our workplace partners.”

LOAVES & FISHES

Louisiana Saturday Night STORY + PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE Everyone was invited to Loaves & Fishes for its annual fundraiser, Louisiana Saturday Night, where they were told to enjoy the music, get some beads, and relax at the L & F Gumbo Shack. All of the food and beverages at the always-anticipated Cajun-style event were prepared and served by L & F's tireless volunteer cooks and support team. According to Tamara Long , the proceeds went toward their operational funding. Some of this year's money will be dedicated to expanding meal services to include Sundays. This is something that we have wanted to do for a while. At this time, there is not a consistent Sunday meal available in the community.” The Cajun menu, music and decorations are always popular, and this year was no exception. Hundreds came out throughout the evening to show their support. The menu included gumbo with chicken and andouille sausage, rice, slaw and bread, For dessert, there were pralines and some really tasty bread pudding. Bryce & Jody Sanders

Daniel Nolan & Jill Ayers

“I have no idea how many people attended this event,” Long said. “But, we do have a lot of folks who come out for this every year. Some come in and dine with us. Others just drive by and pick up their food. We just want to say thanks to everyone who supports our efforts here at L & F.”
