MAN CAVE

Revival Time REVIVE TESTOSTERONE & CRYOTHERAPY Services that revive from the inside out. Story by Liesel Schmidt + Photography Courtesy of Revive Testosterone & Cryotherapy No one likes the idea of getting older. Your body slows down, your energy level decreases, the lines and wrinkles start creeping their way across your face. Weight and health issues also become a concern as well as systems start to wear out. Normally, these are topics discussed within the circles of womanhood, each member of the gathered female contingent relaying her own frustrations at just what’s going on and seeking affirmation from the other ladies around her as they all exchange fixes and tricks to combat those creeping effects of age. But women aren’t the only ones who experience the shifts, as men’s aging process is just as much a frustration—and a true concern—as that of women. For that reason, the men’s healthcare industry has taken a shift into addressing the various signs and symptoms of aging, putting greater focus on treatments that prevent and often reverse some of the damage of aging. Recent years have led to new technologies and new innovations that one might never have imagined, and on the cusp of that trend is the team of experts at the offices of Revive Testosterone & Cryotherapy in Paducah, Kentucky, and Clarksville, Tennessee.

Having opened their flagship location in summer of 2017, the practice experienced such success that they were encouraged to open a second location in late 2018, offering services that have been scientifically shown to revitalize, strengthen, and re-energize their male patients and bring them back to optimal levels of health.

“... our ultimate goal here is to empower our patients and assist them in taking control of their lives.” - Joshua Hudson “We’ve been so fortunate to have already helped hundreds of patients and equip them with the knowledge and tools they need to reach their goals and help prevent many diseases. We’ve seen how difficult it can be to seek out treatment and how misinformed many are, and our ultimate goal here is to empower our patients and assist them in taking control or their lives, their vitality, and their body optimization journey,”

explains Joshua Hudson, who cofounded Revive with partner Jerry Smith. An RN with experience in numerous healthcare fields including CCU, hospice, and orthopedics as well as a background in human and health performance and personal training, Hudson certainly has the resume to back him up in his work. But no partnership would be truly equal without matched expertise as well as complementary strengths, and Smith’s own background certainly fits the bill. Having served as an Orthopedic Spine PA for the past six years in addition spending years in hospital medicine, Smith gained his first insight into hormone optimization when he began managing osteoporosis patients, and he now brings that expertise to bear in the practice with the patients he sees. Rounding out their team are Dr. Clint Hill, MD, whose passion lies in hormone optimization, and Dr. Jena Ruxer, MD, who uses a multi-faceted approach with her patients that incorporates traditional medicine and holistic ideas as well as cosmetic components to achieve results.

full-body cryotherapy treatments in their Cold Cryo Sauna. Naturally, the idea of stepping into a spaceage chamber to be blasted with temperatures between -120 degrees and -190 degrees isn’t exactly what most guys would consider fun. But the effect that that deep freeze has is remarkable, and studies have shown the treatments to be anything but ice sold to an Eskimo. So just what’s all the hype about? According to research, cryotherapy’s benefits include: • Strengthening the immune system • Improvement of circulation • Strengthening the blood vessels • Increases metabolism to reduce body weight • Decreases cellulite deposits • Decelerates the aging process • Combats age-related aches and pains in joints and muscles • Helps increase performance levels • Decreases muscle cramping • Aids muscle recovery

Revive is a practice that truly does live up to its name, offering services that revive—from the inside out. Among the most groundbreaking is, of course, cryotherapy, which utilizes extreme cold to achieve various effects. Unlike some practices which use tools to target specific areas of the body, however, Revive’s Clarksville office offers WINTER 2019 • 9

Reversing many of those concerns through TRT, Revive’s success is based on a personal approach to each patient’s needs. “We look at multiple factors including symptoms and lab tests, and we monitor progress to ensure that it’s being effective,” Hudson explains.

With #TestosteroneTherapy, you will see an Increase in red blood cells, fluid retention, and a decrease in sleep apnea.

“Walking out of the chamber leaves people feeling invigorated and ready to take on the day, and the surge of energy you get is bar-none!” - Joshua Hudson Unfortunately, one of the other main complaints of aging in men is low testosterone, which is why Revive also offers testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). Low testosterone can cause: • Low energy • Decreases in quality of life • Decreased sex drive • Decreased strength and athletic performance • Mood swings • Feelings of sadness or depression • Fatigue • Decreased work performance • Increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other metabolic disorders • Decreased bone mass

Completing their company objective of reviving are their medical spa services and weight loss injections as well as float therapy, which has shown marked effects in treating stress and even PTSD. Whatever the reason to seek out their services, Revive is certainly doing its part in creating a healthier, more vibrant community of men. And that’s something that will never get old. Top Facial Plastic Surgery Predictions for 2019 AAFPRS MEMBERS LOOK INTO THEIR CRYSTAL BALLS FOR THE YEAR AHEAD

Facial plastic surgeons are taking out their crystal balls to share a glimpse of what we will see more, or less of, in the coming year in cosmetic surgery. Story by Patty Mathews, KELZ PR WINTER 2019 • 13

Natural-looking results are here to stay. Gone, but not totally forgotten, are the highly sculpted noses, plumped-out puckers and frozen faces of plastic surgery past. Today’s procedures create natural-looking results so you look refreshed, relaxed and like the best version of yourself. As the memories of that over-done look fade to black, we can expect an even greater uptick in the number of men and women seeking cosmetic enhancements. “The desire to look better, but natural, is not new. In fact, most patients fear the stretched or windblown look as well as the overdone, un-natural looking nose. Overdone Hollywood celebrities do more to create fear of surgery. The biggest challenge for well-trained facial plastic surgeons is to help patients understand that they can have improvements, while looking totally normal, just better,” says Phillip R. Langsdon, MD, President of the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS). “We have seen a definite trend towards more natural facial results in our practice and nationwide. Patients are asking us for less overfilling of the lips and cheeks and a more graceful look” says Mitchell D Kaye MD, AAFPRS Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon and Cosmetic Surgeon in Clarksville, Tennessee.

need eyelifts, nasal reduction or refining surgery and face and neck lifts. The trick is using surgical or nonsurgical treatments in the right patient and blending them if necessary. Too much of one or the other is not going to benefit the patient. It’s definitely a balance,” says Dr. Kaye of the Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Center of Kentucky & Tennessee.

Micro will be a macro buzz word in 2019. Microneedling with platelet rich plasma (PRP), microblading and micro- or baby Botox will gain momentum in the coming year. Microneedling uses a special roller or device with needles to create tiny channels in the skin to trigger its natural wound healing capabilities, namely the production of collagen and elastin, the building blocks of supple, youthful skin. PRP injections jump-start this healing response. Microblading is the new go-to for over-plucked or waxed eyebrows. It’s a type of tattooing where pigment is implanted under the skin with a manual handheld tool. Micro-Botox involves injecting small amounts of neuromodulator within the upper layers of the skin to enhance tone, smooth wrinkles and reduce the size of pores.

More is not necessarily better. Excessive tightening or “too much” volume can produce a look that is instantly recognizable as artificial and overdone. “By using the right amount of the newest fillers available, in the right place we can sculpt a nose, cheek, lips or chin without surgery. Knowing which filler to use and where is critical.” says Dr. Kaye. Downtime is usually limited to no gym that day. Skin care with prescription medications can restore the skin to a healthy balance, reduce wrinkles by increasing collagen content in the skin and get rid of sun damage and brown spots. Peels and lasers will give skin a new start by removing the damaged outer layer. There is a whole new class of injectable fat dissolvers for use in the neck that can limit the need for liposuction in some patients. “There are definitely people who still

Heart Bites HEART HEALTHY RECIPES FOR AMERICAN HEART MONTH Being heart smart starts in the kitchen. Story by Liesel Schmidt + Recipes by Kellie Gunderman Being heart smart often starts in the kitchen, but let’s face it—most of the delicious foods we’ve come to know and love aren’t exactly ones a cardiologist would give the thumbs up. Heavy, cream-based sauces; fried foods dripping with saturated fats; overly-salted… well, everything…The higher the placement on the “no

no” list for heart-healthy food, the more tempting it is—and with good reason, as those are the ones that seem to pack the most flavor. Fortunately, all it takes is a few substitutions for the more fat- and caloriedense ingredients we traditionally use as well as some new cooking techniques and voila! A satisfying meal that’s every bit as flavorful and tasty as its less-healthy counterpart. And while your heart will be thanking you over the fact that you’re showing it some love, your tastebuds will be doing a happy dance with every bite you take. Take a look at some of our favorite American Heart Association-approved dishes to get 2019 off to a happier and healthier start. Whether you’re craving seafood, Italian, or Indian, we’ve got some tasty noshes that’ll make your heart flutter with pleasure. WINTER 2019 • 17

COOKING WITH SPICES CHEF’S TIP #1: When creating a blend of spices for a recipe, remember that spice mixes make great gifts! Make a little extra, store it in a small jar, add a tag & voila! A hostess gift for your next dinner party!

CHEF’S TIP #2: When possible, grind your own spices. Freshly ground spices have a more robust flavor! Try using an inexpensive coffee grinder, but don’t forget to wash it out before storing!

CHEF’S TIP #3: When it comes to storing spices light, heat & moisture are you worst enemies! Be sure to close all containers & store your spices immediately after using them.

TINY TEETH

BIG HEALTH Story by Liesel Schmidt

W

ith all of the different checklists and doctors and advice on this or that, it can be confusing to figure out just what really is important in terms of oral hygiene for your children. When should you take your children to the dentist for their very first trip, and is a cleaning every six months necessary? If you’re like a majority of the population, it’s not your favorite place to go, so why on earth would you expect your child to find even the slightest bit of enjoyment in it? Besides, what possible need could your child have for being as vigilant as you, you, the picture of oral health with your steadfast routine of all the brushing and the flossing and the water-picking (uh-huh, we see you with that sheepish look on your face), when their little smiles widen to reveal all those little pearls just waiting to become the prized possession of the Tooth Fairy? According to research, there might be more cause than you think...For that reason, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM) in February in hopes

of raising awareness of the need to start good dental practices at an early age. Beginning in the first year of life, it’s important to create a healthy foundation for those teeny-tiny little pearly whites, keeping potential cavities at bay by using a soft, wet training toothbrush on children under two. For those two and above, add a children’s toothpaste with fluoride to the routine and brush twice a day. “One thing I typically tell parents is that the best toothbrush is one that kids are excited to use,” says Dr. Kevin Kennedy, Jr., whose new practice at Spring Creek Pediatric Dentistry in Clarksville, Tennessee, will open in early spring. “If that means a Spin-brush with music, then go for it. If that means a manual toothbrush with an animated character they love on the handle, then use that one. Find out what motivates your child to develop a healthy brushing technique and have fun with it!” Once there are enough teeth to floss, floss gently in between the teeth to remove any particles of food that might have lodged in those itty-bitty crevices. WINTER 2019 • 23

As a general rule of thumb, Dr. Kennedy has a few other helpful tips for parents with tiny mouths to tend: • Establish a dental home with a trusted pediatric dentist • Limit sugary drinks to meal times only • Never put an infant to sleep with a sugary liquid or use juice in a Sippy-cup for toddlers • Never neglect the importance of baby teeth in forming healthy permanent teeth • Always ask your pediatric dentist any questions you have, no matter how insignificant they might seem “Another critical factor in preventing decay in between the teeth is being mindful of frequent exposure to sugary liquids,” he continues. “Sometimes simply changing the frequency of when a child has access to a sugary liquid throughout the day can significantly decrease his or her risk of developing cavities.”

With NCDHM’s 2019 campaign slogan of

“Brush and clean in between to build a healthy smile!”

the ADA has some great ways to make that healthy smile a sparkling realty:

24 24 •• VIP VIP HEALTH HEALTH && BEAUTY BEAUTY

“... the best toothbrush is the one that kids are excited to use.” - Dr. Kevin Kennedy, Jr. So just when should check-ups begin? According to the ADA, the time to open wide and say “Ahhh” is within six months of the appearance of your child’s first tooth, and no later than their first birthday. When it comes to establishing a regular schedule of visits to the dentist’s office, there are certain other factors to keep in mind as well. “The need for regular dental visits for children is individually based on a classification called ‘caries risk,’ where permanent areas of damage in the teeth develop into tiny holes,” says Dr. Kennedy, who has been practicing pediatric dentistry since 2012. “The most common timeline to follow in

establishing a regular schedule of check-ups every six months is for children age two and above, but there may be unique factors to each child that would alter the recommended interval based on their own individual need. Always ask your pediatric dentist what is your child’s ‘caries risk’ and what factors are involved in reaching that determination.” Baby teeth may ultimately be destined for the Tooth Fairy’s collection, but proper care is still an essential part of your child’s health, so get ready to smile wide and start brushing.

1. Sugary foods and beverages should strictly be consumed with meals, as saliva production increases during meals, which helps neutralize acid production and rinse food particles from the mouth. 2. Limit snacks between meals, and offer only nutritious foods. 3. Allow children only sugarless chewing gum, and consider it a helpful tool. Chewing sugarless gum after mealtimes or snacks can increase saliva flow and help wash away food and decayproducing acid. 4. Monitor beverage consumption and limit them to healthy beverage choices such as water and low-fat milk. 5. Be an example yourself and help your children establish good brushing and flossing habits. 6. Schedule regular dental visits.

Go Red for Women HEART SMART TIPS, HEART DISEASE PREVENTION + RISK FACTORS Your heart is your heart, and you have only one of them. Story by Liesel Schmidt + Kellie Gunderman Photography by Josh Vaughn The heart. It’s the universal symbol associated with love and one of the most iconic images used for Valentine’s Day. But far more importantly, the heart is the very source of life, the organ that works so tirelessly in keeping the body functioning, the one that so often gets overlooked until something goes terribly wrong. But all too frequently, even the signs that should put us on high alert are misunderstood or dismissed, excused as a minor issue or “just a little bit of stress” as we—the strong, take-charge women that we are—go about our daily lives in hopes that if we don’t see it, it’s not there.

26 • • VIP VIP HEALTH HEALTH & & BEAUTY BEAUTY 26

Especially when those warning signs and red flags don’t follow the neat little checklist so regularly drilled into our heads: Is there pain on the left side? Tingling in the arm, shortness of breath? Is there heaviness in the chest? No? Well, then. It’s not following the rules, so no need to make a fuss, right? Wrong. According to the American Heart Association, some of the most important warning signs are often swept aside, marginalized, and even misdiagnosed simply because they don’t fall within the preconceived expectations of symptoms most commonly associated with heart disease. But research shows that heart attacks in women present themselves in ways unlike those in men, and people who have led healthy and fit lifestyles generally tend to assume that they are immune to the possibility that maybe, just maybe, their heart might fail them. Not even age is a factor in determining who is at risk, as younger and younger women experience heart attacks and succumb to other forms of cardiac disease.

Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, the neck, the jaw, or the stomach Shortness of breath—with or without chest discomfort Breaking out in a cold sweat Nausea and/or vomiting and dizziness or lightheadedness Extreme fatigue

Unfortunately, our widespread assumptions are often the biggest reasons that heart conditions have become such an issue, and women are one of the greatest victims. According to research offered by the AHA,

28 • VIP HEALTH & BEAUTY

one in three women die annually of heart disease and stroke. That equates to approximately one woman– Every. Single. Minute. That’s a very scary statistic to consider, which is precisely why Go Red for Women was begun in 2004. Facing such staggering numbers and seeing little efforts to make women more aware of their own risk, the AHA took on the challenge and established the Go Red initiative, creating a widespread movement that would ultimately be used to empower women to take charge of their heart health. “Go Red For Women empowers women, sisters, and friends to take control of their health and know their numbers,” says Kristin Palmer, Go Red for Women ambassador and Communications Director for American Heart Association in Nashville. “We encourage all women to make their own health a priority and to get their well-woman visit scheduled with their doctors to know their risk of heart disease and stroke. One in three of us will be affected, and our goal is to work together to change that.”

“Go Red For Women empowers women, sisters, and friends to take control of their health and know their numbers.” - KRISTIN PALMER With that in mind, Go Red sponsors National Wear Red Day on the first Friday of every February, kicking off American Heart Month and sending out an even more vocal call to arms as countless women wear the red dresses that have become so iconic to Go Red. Joining other women in wearing the logo or even attending special events where red dresses and red attire is the dress code, supporters are doing everything they can to help Go Red achieve the ultimate goal of eradicating the disease once and for all.

Unfortunately, we as women tend to put our own health last, as we put on the cape of a Superwoman who never shows signs of tiredness, never feels overwhelmed or stressed out. We do all, we see all, we know all. But when it comes to our health, we tend to put that piece of the puzzle aside and assume that we’ll feel better tomorrow, after a little bit of sleep…or a little bit of wine…or a good soak in the tub. Ah, if that were always the case. But the reality of it is that your heart is your heart, and you have only one of them. There’s not a backup version you can plug in in its place, so it’s important to realize that even the subtlest of symptoms shouldn’t be dismissed. They really are legitimate cause for concern, as age, diet, lifestyle, even genetics all play huge roles in determining your risk factor—and even then, the risk factor you carry might be higher than you’d expect.

Essential Wellness ESSENTIAL OILS FOR ANXIETY & DEPRESSION Essential oils have been credited with offering some relief in mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. Story by Liesel Schmidt Photography by Evin Krehbiel of Evin Photography We all have them…Strong associations with scents and smells that take our minds to another time and another place, that evoke strong feelings and emotions. They can be wonderfully sentimental or disturbing,

32 • VIP HEALTH & BEAUTY

depending on the memories we so strongly tie to them. And on a visceral, biological level, they can even alter our moods. It’s that very ability to change our moods and our mindsets that makes the concept of essential oils so interesting, as the scents they emit stimulate various parts of the brain during the course of inhalation. In combination with the skin’s absorption of these naturally occurring plant extracts, their scents create a powerful effect that’s been used in holistic medicine for thousands of years; and when you’re looking for natural remedies to create a more healthy, balanced lifestyle, essential oils are quickly becoming one of the top things to try. Over the course of various studies, essential oils have been credited with offering some relief in mood

disorders such as depression and anxiety—and that’s no small thing, considering how many people battle these two issues each and every day. Unfortunately, aside from medications and drugs, there aren’t a lot of treatments. And while those manufactured medicines may have scads of anecdotal evidence and clinical research that supports their efficacy, they also have a few concerning side effects; so if you’re trying to stay away from the pharmaceuticals and take a more natural route, essential oils are a great option.

“There are over 120,000 scientific research articles published on the effects of essential oils, and they’re even being given notice by the medical field for their safety and efficacy. Many hospitals and physicians have also begun implementing the use of essential oils within the modern healthcare system, and they’ve seen tremendous results,” says Clarksville-based doTERRA Essential Oils Diamond rank Wellness Advocate Amiee Conner, a graduate of Webster University with a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling. A passionate user herself for six years, she's seen— and felt—the benefits of essential oils, and their lifechanging effects are the very thing that have made her advocacy of them so strong. The way they work really is pretty interesting—and not quite as far-fetched as you might be thinking. So just what makes them work? Basically, when specialized

nerve cells in the upper part of the nose detect smells, they send signals to your brain along the olfactory nerve to an area called the olfactory bulb. From there, the impulse is processed; and the information about the smell is delivered to other areas of the brain that are nearby, which are called the limbic system. According to research, the limbic system might play an essential role in controlling things like behavior, emotions, memory, and mood—which is where the essential oils come into play. “One essential oil is comprised of hundreds of naturally occurring chemical compounds that support the body at a cellular level, which makes them especially effective in doing things like boosting the immune system, calming the nervous system, and regulating the digestive system,” she goes on to explain. “They’re extremely safe and can be used topically, aromatically, WINTER 2019 • 33

and internally, but it’s important to know the basic guidelines to maximize their effectiveness.” Depending on the type of oil you use and the scent associated with it, you’ll reap benefits that include the aforementioned differences in emotions and mood. And while aromatherapy might have its uses, it’s the added benefit of having the oils massaged into the skin and actually absorbed that makes them so effective. Used as part of a mixture, studies have shown strong evidence making a case for using mood-boosting essential oils including: • Bergamot • Geranium • Jasmine • Lavender • Roman Chamomile • Rose Otto • Rosemary • Sage • Yuzu “For mood enhancement and stress relief, I recommend oils that contain citrus, as citrus oils are naturally uplifting to the mind and body. Peppermint is another essential oil that can help with energy production, and using it aromatically can help open your airways and oxygenate your blood, which in turn, invigorates your senses and increases energy production. Lavender and Roman chamomile are two essential oils that will help promote a more restful sleep, and frankincense is known to help lessen feelings of sadness by promoting feelings of peace and relaxation,” Conner recommends. Naturally, if you’ve been prescribed medications like

34 • VIP HEALTH & BEAUTY

anti-depressants or anti-anxiety drugs by a doctor, you should never stop taking them without discussing it with your clinician first. It’s important to look at your own symptoms as well as the severity of your case; but in the everyday, day-to-day stresses and battles you wage against gloomy moods that make you feel lowenergy and less like yourself sometimes, essential oils are definitely an asset.

Amiee Conner is a Diamond rank Wellness Advocate with doTERRA essential oils. She holds a Bachelors degree in Psychology and a Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling from Webster University. IN THE GYM

Overcoming Obstacles JUST PICTURE IT: OBSTACLE COURSES SCALED FOR GROWN-UPS, COMPLETE WITH BARS, RINGS, CLIMBING LADDERS AND WALLS…YOU NAME IT, IT’S THERE, READY AND WAITING TO BE EXPLORED.

36 • VIP HEALTH & BEAUTY

WELCOME TO TOTAL OBSTACLE FITNESS CENTER Story by Liesel Schmidt + Photography by Josh Vaughn Climbing. Jumping. Running. Swinging from bar to bar or rope to rope, clambering over every inch of obstacle to reach the top and take pride in the view from above. When we’re kids, these are the things we do at the playground every day without forethought or expectation of how many calories we’ve burned, how many muscles we’ve engaged, how many steps we’ve taken. We’re playing, and physical exertion is a natural extension of that, motivated only by our desire to have fun, burn off some energy, and spend time with our friends. Unfortunately, as we get older, we lose that simple sense of play and replace our time with more “respectable” and responsible things. We’re being grown ups, and unless we actually go out of our way to pencil in some time to work out, we never get the level of exercise that will keep us as fit, agile, and vivacious as we were in our youth. But where’s the fun in that? Really, the goal of making workouts more fun, motivating, and social is what’s given rise to corporate fitness trends. We crave company as we sweat it out, as camaraderie begets the desire to show up and even has the added benefit of bringing in a healthy dose of competitive spirit—and testing our own limits is becoming a big trend in and of itself. We want to be fitter, faster, and stronger than we look; but that’s not going to happen unless we get up and get moving. The challenge then becomes how to fit it all into our workouts: the strength training, the cardio, the active use of muscles in ways other than just hitting up stations of free weights and machines. It’s not easy in today’s busy schedule, but it’s far from the impossible…especially if you think back to those childhood days on the playground. WINTER 2019 • 37

Just picture it: obstacle courses scaled for grown-ups, complete with bars, rings, climbing ladders and walls… You name it, it’s there, ready and waiting to be explored. Sounds fun, doesn’t it? It can be, but it can also be challenging which is the very goal that Joe Shakeenab, Karl Stephen, and Storm Sims had in mind when they partnered to open Total Obstacle Fitness Center in 2018. And with shows like American Ninja Warrior and methods like Parkour and obstacle course training used as their basic business model in creating coach-led sessions, they had strong reasons to feel confident that they would see success in building a gym that changed tactics by doing the unexpected. “Due to the nature of three disciplines we use, our clients rarely have the opportunity to plateau,” says Shakeenab, who, as a veteran, has a deep understanding of the need for physical training. “Classes are purposefully structured to be different on a daily basis, and we focus on fun and fitness with strength, form, conditioning, and critical thinking as core components of everything we do.”

Offering group classes as well as individual training sessions, the team at TOFC works with clients of all ages and abilities as well as children with different learning abilities, at-risk youth to adaptive athletes, and individuals struggling with physical composition. Based on the individual, the trainers create a workout that best suits their needs and their goals. “Whether they’re in the beginning stage or in a more advanced stage of their fitness level, we help facilitate development and growth in their lives,” says Stephen, a veteran whose love of fitness has thrived in his new venture. Boosting their ranks with seven coaches, each member of the TOFC team comes from a different fitness background, though they all maintain the core of TOFC’s method, using bodyweight exercises; strength

and conditioning drills; and running through obstacle challenges. “In all that we do, it’s truly a team effort among the staff, coaches, and owners to provide members with the best and most unique fitness experience possible,” Sims says. Like Stephen and Shakeenab, Sims is also a military vet, so his ability to take unique and varied physical and mental challenges and meeting them head-on is well suited to the gym’s methods.

Not that they don’t also have the standard equipment you’d find at traditional gyms. Quite the contrary as the goal is to make your time in the gym as productive as possible. To that end, their spacious facility is also equipped with free weights, elliptical machines, stationary bikes, and treadmills as well as those components which complement the drills completed on the obstacle course. And as a unique way of tracking performance, TOFC uses wristbands that, much like the colored belts traditionally used in karate, range in ranking from white to black. “Having the wristbands instills confidence and self-discipline to everyone, particularly in our youth. We’ve found that it influences their mindset and behavior patterns, giving them something to strive for, and that’s crucial in keeping them motivated,” explains Shakeenab. There’s strength in motivation, and this group is all about being strong. Total Obstacle Fitness Center is located at 1030A Progress Drive, Clarksville, Tennessee 37040. LIVING THE RUNWAY

Fashion That Counts COUNT ME HEALTHY BY CHELSEA CHARLES Choose a goal and turn it into a bead count. Story by Liesel Schmidt + Photography Courtesy of Chelsea Charles When you’re a woman with a full life of juggling your work, your kids, your husband, and everything that naturally comes with the running of a household, along with everything you do to stay healthy, it can be a struggle to keep it all straight. Sure, there are endless techno-geek-and-chic ways of tracking everything from your sleep patterns to the glasses of water you’ve consumed and how many steps you’ve managed to take during the course of the day; but when we’re so managed by those devices that life seems to not be within our own control anymore, the thought of one more thing telling us what to do, when to do it, and how to do it can be too much to bear. And really, who needs

one more high-tech display of busyness to remind us that we have a lot to do? Admittedly, the importance of not letting healthy habits fall by the wayside is more important than ever—especially for women. We have more health issues to contend with, more responsibilities to juggle and more stress to manage. But in the midst of all that, it’s important not to lose sight of the fact that we all need to feel beautiful and remind ourselves that we sparkle and shine, that we matter and that taking care of ourselves both inside and out is a beautiful thing that will help us create a beautiful life—not only for ourselves, but also for the people around us. For Chelsea Charles, that reminder didn’t need the prompting of technology. It needed the simple act of touching a bead. Fueled by her business acumen in marketing and product design, it was the desire to combine her own love of all things blingy as well as the health and wellness goals that so drive her life as a woman that led Charles WINTER 2019 • 45

to launch her own jewelry line in 2009, first creating a bracelet whose simple design was both eye catching and deceptively effective. Fittingly called Count Me Healthy, the bangle-style bracelets utilize a series of beads to track various goals—whether those goals are drinking more water, weekly workouts, pounds lost, snacks consumed, or anything else that you’re trying to keep in your sights—and provide a visible reminder each time you look down at your wrist. But more than just a passive reminder, each bead is designed to stay in place until you’ve moved it, keeping you accountable and mindful of whether or not you’ve made the progress you’ve hoped. The simple satisfaction of moving a bead, whether on a daily basis or a weekly one, is one that no techno-gadgetry can match—and that, perhaps, is wherein lies the beauty of it all. “I created the Count Me Healthy bracelets to act as a beautiful journal for your wrist that women could wear anywhere with any attire. They serve as pretty reminders of wellness goals, and I think that the reason I’ve been so successful with them is that they’re unique in the way that they accomplish the mission,” says Charles, who juggles her own busy life of work, family, travel, and health goals at the home she shares in the Charlotte area of North Carolina with her husband and two young sons. “Creating a healthy balance can

be difficult, but I want women to realize and always remember that they are beautiful and that what they do for themselves truly is important.” Initially launched with the Count Me Healthy bracelets, Chelsea Charles Jewelry has expanded to include a wildly popular golf-inspired line of products called Golf Goddess, bracelets whose golf-ball-like beads are used to count strokes on the fairway and now includes coordinating golf-inspired earrings, necklaces, and gift sets. For those who love great words of inspiration, the jewelry brand also offers necklaces engraved with everything from motivational hashtags to customizable messages and designs printed on the tag-like pendants. More than just a jewelry designer, it takes only a few clicks around the Chelsea Charles Jewelry website to know that Charles really does try to live a full life. Complete with everything from healthy recipes that look so delicious you might find yourself drooling over the pictures to travel tips to fitness advice, the website is focused on everything a busy woman tries to work into her life, and it really is inspiring. “My family is my biggest inspiration in everything I do, and I think that’s been crucial to keeping me and my work going strong,” Charles says. So, too, has the media buzz she’s had over the years, having captured the attention of everything from spots on The Today Show and The Doctors to features in such widely read publications as Shape, Cosmopolitan, Elle, and Women’s Health. “It’s been an amazing journey,” says Charles. And as the beads slide from one side of the bracelet to the other on her own wrist, she can certainly take satisfaction in the fact that she’s had one more day of beautiful living. THE BEAUTIFUL TRUTH

FACING YOUR

Winter Skin Woes Chase away your winter blues and leave your face healthy & luminous! Story by Liesel Schmidt

Winter is a harsh time of year—not only for your mood, but also for your complexion. All of that cold air has the tendency to dry out the skin all over your body from your hands and feet to your face and everything in between. It seems easy enough to slather on some lotion to combat the winter dryness, but your face should be given extra

48 • VIP HEALTH & BEAUTY

care as the firmness, suppleness, tone, and texture of the skin on your face is different from the rest of your body. With that in mind, we’ve got a few expert-recommended products that’ll help chase away your winter blues and leave you with a face that’s healthy, even, and luminous.

Dry Skin

minimizing dryness and irritation for sensitive skin. It also works extremely well in removing dirt, oil, and makeup without leaving a greasy residue behind.

Winter makes your face and hands dry out quickly because those are areas where the skin is more delicate and thinner than the skin on the rest of your body and when your face and hands are dry, the skin has a tendency to look dull and flaky—not to mention older. Soooo not the look you’re going for. And definitely not the perfect canvas for your makeup. Adding moisturizer to your routine is a great way to combat the dry winter air, so look for hydrating products that are formulated for the face and hands. Depending on your skin type, you might want to choose more gentle products created for sensitive skin or even some designed to combat oily skin. And don’t just do it in the morning before you apply your makeup. Find serums and moisturizers intended for nighttime application, as these are more concentrated to work while you’re asleep.

Bella Med Spa Recommends: ZO SKIN HEALTH Dual Action Cleanser + HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator by SkinMedica

HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator by SkinMedica contains hyaluronic acid, a substance found in the skin that acts as the body’s natural hydrator. It helps lock in moisture and keeps skin healthy, resilient, and supple. HA5 is specially created with a proprietary blend of five forms of HA that smooth the skin, which improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Dull Skin Remember that radiant, youthful glow you were rocking during summer? Winter tends to strip you of that when it robs your skin of moisture and dries it out, and dry skin leads to dullness. So does the buildup of dead skin cells on your face, which is why it’s so important to remove the dry, flaky cells from the surface of your skin and expose the fresher layer of new skin. ZO SKIN HEALTH Dual Action Cleanser is formulated for normal to dry skin. Rather than stripping the skin of moisture, it hydrates as well as

Products that contain chemical exfoliators like AHA’s (alpha hydroxyl acids) and BHA’s (beta hydroxyl acids) WINTER 2019 • 49

are extremely effective in removing dead, dull skin; but if you’re looking for something a little less harsh, try washes with natural, mechanical exfoliators like salt crystals or crushed seeds. As you slough off the old skin and reveal the new, you’ll see more luminescent skin, which will make you look and feel younger.

Bella Med Spa Recommends: ZO SKIN HEALTH Exfoliating Polish ZO SKIN HEALTH Exfoliating Polish uses magnesium crystals to exfoliate dead skin cells and clear clogged pores to leave behind clear, smooth, and even-toned skin that looks renewed and luminous.

Aging Skin Aging skin is something we all struggle with as we get older, but winter seems to speed up the process like crazy. The lack of moisture leads to crepey skin, which has all of those not-so-cute fine lines and wrinkles.

By using washes, serums, and moisturizers that contain antioxidants, you’re applying moisture back into the skin and stimulating it to produce more collagen and elastin, which plump it up and give it a natural elasticity it needs to look younger, not to mention the added bonus of making those lines and wrinkles take a vacation.

Bella Med Spa Recommends: ZO SKIN HEALTH Daily Power Defense Serum + Hydrafacials Using antioxidants like the ZO SKIN HEALTH Daily Power Defense Serum improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and helps prevent future damage. Hydrafacials are also an effective method of resurfacing the skin through the use of lasers with minimal risk and downtime. Through monthly use, they create a healthy, glowing complexion that shows a marked improvement to minimize fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone.
