ebruary, as we all know, is the month for Valentine’s Day, filling the air with love and an overflow of hearts imprinting everything from chocolates to cards; and with so many hearts flooding our field of vision to serve as a notso-subtle reminder of its importance, it really couldn’t be more fitting that February is alsoAmerican Heart Month. The heart is vital to life and taking care of it is essential, so we at VIP Clarksville Magazine want to remind you to show your heart some love so that you can truly live a long and happy life. And speaking of happy, we have some happy stories to share with you in this very blissful Bridal Issue. Fall in love with our couples as you read their tales of romance, but remember to keep the tissues nearby. Some of them are sweet enough to make you cry. You’ll celebrate their joys with them and hopefully be reminded of your own very special day, that day when you made a promise… “in sickness and in health.” That’s a very big promise, and one that was tested very early on in Kayla and Charles Gaytan’s marriage. We welcome you to meet this miraculous family and share in their triumph and courage, remembering all the while to take nothing for granted in this life. In this second annual Bridal Issue, we’re also bringing you some very helpful hints to guide you along in your planning process from venue spaces you’ll adore to area experts on rings, gowns, and sweet delights to make your day unforgettable. And as you work down your To Do list, check out our article on financial planning. That’s one very big Do you’ll need to keep in mind before you say “I Do.” February is absolutely FULL of things to love, and if you’re someone whose social-media loving heart gets all a-Twitter over obscure holidays, you’ll be hashtagging for everything from National Pizza Day to Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day this month. And lest we forget National Drink Wine Day…after all, wine is good for the heart…Whatever captures your heart, we want you to know that you’ve captured ours. You are what makes us the happiest, so thanks to all of you who put us on your love list every month.

Ashley Mynatt Watson VIP Clarksville Magazine is free to pick up at any of our numerous distribution locations. New Year’s Eve at The Silo S TO R Y B Y L I E S E L S C H M I DT P H OTO G R A P H Y B Y C AT L A C Y

It’s heartbreaking to see a child go through medical issues of any kind; and for three-year-old Clara Gilliam of Hopkinsville, life has been full of struggles that would test the mettle of even the strongest grown-up. Diagnosed at 11 weeks old with a rare genetic seizure disorder called Aicardi Syndrome, Clara’s complicated medical history became even more heart wrenching in late 2015 when she was diagnosed with cancer that spread from the base of her spine into her lungs. As Clara battles through this insidious disease, she still glows with the light of child-like joy; and in hopes of keeping that joy and light burning strong, the city of Hopkinsville came together for a New Year’s Eve fundraiser held at The Silo Event Center in Clara’s honor. As ticket holders turned out in their best black tie attire, they toasted, feasted, and danced the night away, raising $6100 in donations to help fund Clara’s treatment. And when midnight struck, glasses were held high in hopes that 2017 would be a year full of blessings for a little girl whose life is an example to celebrate every moment.

PHILLIP ASHLEY Chocolates The Art of Living

Story by Lyda Kay Ferree, The Southern Lifestyle Lady Photography courtesy of Phillip Ashley Chocolates

W

hat Kate Spade did for handbags and Christian Louboutin for women’s shoes, designer chocolatier, Phillip Ashley Rix is doing for chocolate—liberating it from the confines of tradition. He has been named one of the Best Chocolatiers and Confectioners in America by TasteTV, donned the “Real Life Willy Wonka” by FORBES magazine, and Local PALATE magazine calls him “Memphis’ King of Chocolate.” With a portfolio of over 200 designer chocolates, corporate and celebrity clients such as FedEx, Disney, Stevie Wonder, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and cooking at the esteemed James Beard House, Chef Phillip Ashley is a rising star in the culinary and business world. His delectable gems were the official chocolate of the 2016 GRAMMYS Celebration and 2016 OSCARS SALUTE. His designer collections are sold by national luxury retailers Neiman Marcus and Horchow. A self-taught chocolatier, he is renowned for designing wildly imaginative chocolates with ingredients such as sweet potato, barbecue and bleu cheese. His passion for fanciful flavors and masterful attention to detail result in visually stunning decadent pieces of edible art. Philipp Ashley is a sought after expert in branding, ideation, sales and marketing and small business development speaking in front of audiences from corporate executives to the United States Congress.

• LKF: What is your background in the culinary arts? I read that you are selftaught. • PA: I spent several years studying food and ingredients and spices of all types-- all of the things that make a dining experience and food in general what it is. I studied peoples’ tastes and the zones of the palette and wines and liquors and distilled liquors. I wanted to be an encyclopedia of food and really take a research approach to how we develop and design chocolate, which is what allows us to create chocolate—to have these extraordinary combinations like collard greens and cornbread, which is one of our fall collections (It’s really good, too.) and then be able to pair them with wine, liquors and distilled beverages. • LKF: What appealed to you initially about the world of chocolates and where did you train? • PA: I grew up at my grandmother’s. She cooked and I learned how to build. My grandfather owned a construction company and I learned how to use tools and power tools, woodworking and gardening and how to prepare food, cook and paint. Over time I became more and more fascinated with cooking. I had a natural knack for it. One day I woke up and said “chocolate!” I wanted to do something different. I did 16 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Bridal Issue

not want to be a restaurant chef. What could I do that would be fun and creative and something you don’t encounter all of the time? How cool would it be to say that I’m a chocolatier! • LKF: Talk about your national clients and national accolades. • PA: Neiman Marcus and Horchow found out about my work. I went after people who thought our chocolates would work well with them. I have been with both of these clients for over a year now. We had an opportunity to supply all of the chocolates for the Grammies last year. They learned about our chocolates from an event I did in L.A. a few years prior, and they contacted me. That was a very big deal! And we have done a number of other big events.

What I want to achieve is to create the most meticulous fussed-over chocolates! —Phillip Ashley, creator of Phillip Ashley Chocolates

• LKF: Has it been a long process from being a self-taught chocolatier to selling your designer chocolates to places like Neiman Marcus and Horchow? • PA: Yes. A lot of times people say you’re doing so great so fast. From a surface standpoint it seems like it’s only been 3 or 4 years, but prior to that it was roughly 5 years getting everything going. I had to become a chocolatier. That was step 1 and to learn a very disciplined area of food and one in which it is not easy to find information. It has definitely been a long road but a good one. Looking back I remember reading and trying to find information and starting to play around and make the chocolate and wondering if people would like this and will they get it. • LKF: Do you attend the major food and chocolate events in the country? • PA: I go to some of the events. We competed in several events and won Gold Medals in big food and chocolate competitions. Outside of Memphis L.A. is one of our biggest markets. California, Texas, New York, Florida (a big state for us) and the Atlanta area. Our orders come from everywhere. • LKF: What is one of the most fun chocolate events in which you have participated?

• PA: I haven’t done a ton of food-related events. I do a lot of events in general. One event that I like a lot is the Atlanta Food and Wine Festival, which attracts over 10,000 people a year. I have a good time! I have not spent time in Switzerland, but I am planning on going to the chocolate regions of France and Belgium. I also want to go down to Africa and South America and check out the cacoa farms where they grow the beans. That’s on my agenda for 2018. • LKF: What do you enjoy most about working with chocolate? Is it because you can utilize your art and food background? • PA: Art and food and having a sales background. What I enjoy about what I do is it allows me to connect with people. I always tell people that what we do is tell stories about chocolate and we have chocolates that are conversation pieces. Each chocolate has a name. The ingredients start conversation. When they taste them they talk about food or drink or places they know. We tell stories that taste like chocolates. Food in general has gone back to farm to table. The key ingredient that attracts people. The stories behind all of this. People want to know the story behind what they buy.

• LKF: What is the biggest challenge of working with chocolate? • PA: My biggest challenge is to constantly come up with things that are fresh and new. We have our core chocolate. We have over 200 plus flavors now. And we have a vegan collection. I’ve been working to have our top 50 and eventually grow it to our top 100. These will be the flavors we will always have. Then we will rotate through these flavors. This week we will feature 30 or so flavors. Next week we will feature another 30. We will have our standard signature collection like our gemstone caramels and our seasonal collections (4 seasons). Last year’s summer collection was real popular. We’re making choctails that celebrate different cocktails like Moscow Mules and margaritas. We use those ingredients with my chocolates. For example the Moscow Mule consists of ginger beer, vodka and lime. The margarita contains tequila and sour mix and we finish that chocolate with a lime sea salt. That’s the thing that I like to do with chocolate—take things in the real world that we eat and drink and figure out a way to turn it into

chocolate. We have Strawberry Cheesecake and a Key Lime Pie that is two layers so you get the filling and the crust. • LKF: You are to be congratulated for carving for yourself a point of difference that sets you apart nationally and internationally. Your chocolates are works of art. Some describe them as Jackson Pollack art. • PA: We like to call them edible chocolate art. The visual is just as important as the food. People say we eat with our eyes. But they’re not too pretty to eat. That’s what we want to achieve. We want to create the most meticulously fussed-over chocolates. That’s why our pricing is what it is. There is a lot of time and effort in our chocolates. We have chocolates that look like planet Earth. We really want them to be visually stunning! • LKF: Has it been a long road from your culinary beginnings to being a sought-after expert renowned for designing very imaginative chocolates such as sweet potato, barbecue and blue cheese. You have a passion for fanciful flavors and masterful attention to details, which is apparent when I look at your stunning edible art. The box of chocolates you sent me are gorgeous! They really are almost too pretty to eat, and they are decadently divine! • PA: I am passionate about chocolate and I try to break the mold of what’s been done, not just for the sake of shock value. Some people may be hesitant when we say ‘here’s a barbecue chocolate.’ A lot of time and effort are spent in developing it. It must taste like we say. A lot of people love our barbecue chocolate because it tastes amazing. If we say it’s mango habanero you get the heat of the habanero. You get the burn and then it kind of goes away. • LKF: What is the shelf life of your chocolate? • PA: Our chocolates will last 21 days or about a month, but it is best consumed within 7 to 10 days. We use no artificial preservative or sweeteners to prolong shelf life.

orange. We have a 12-piece box with four flavors. The white chocolate piece is blood orange and vanilla bean. The milk chocolate piece consists of blood orange, strawberry jam and cognac ganache. The dark chocolate piece is blood orange and balsamic vinegar and there’s a caramel, which is a blood orange caramel, which has pink peppercorn and pink salt. You get three of each of those in the box. Seasonally going into March we will launch our spring and summer collection. Every season we put out a spring, summer, fall and winter collection. the backs of the gowns have become as important as the front.” Never to be forgotten is the man of the hour; and, according to Forest, blue might just be the new black... “Navy is the color for men this year, so almost every tuxedo company has added a navy tux to their line.” Other trends to track? “Slim fit is still the most popular fit for tuxedos, though not everyone chooses to stay with all the traditional pieces and opt for a slightly more casual look with just vests and pants,” Forest says. For the final touch, bow ties are making a strong showing; and color-coordinated socks kick things up a notch. While bridesmaid’s dresses are notorious for being unflattering and cringe-worthy, Forest predicts that the upcoming bridal year could be an exception to the rule. In fact, with styles in everything from strapless to halters and colors that may span various shades of the same color family, the dresses walking down the aisle in 2016 are being given the priority of being tasteful rather than becoming a bitter pill to swallow. Even tiny details are front and center: “Flower girls and ring bearers generally steal the show, so whatever they wear is going to be a hit. The most popular dresses for flower girls are colored and very simple,” Forest continues, “and little boys in knickers or wearing suspenders and bow ties offer that classic touch.” Regardless of what colors may be on the hot list or whether lace is in or out, the true focus of a wedding is love — and that’s something that will never go out of style.

In March, Phillip Ashley Chocolates will launch its 2017 Spring Collection & begin preparing for Easter. Visit the Virtual Chocolate Boutique • LKF: Tell me about your Valentine’s flavors this year. • PA: Each year we put out a new Valentine’s collection. This year it is all hearts. We will always go with that theme in some way. The cornerstone or the themed ingredient is burnt

The Wine Down

Reflections Orthodontics, on Rudolphtown Road, hosted their second annual “Wine Down” Hygienist Seminar. The event is a new take on the commonly, bland, Continuing Education classes that all hygienist must take to keep up with their licensing. The guests were greeted with new wine glasses to decorate before choosing from a variety of wines to enjoy. Hygienists signed up for door prizes as they walked in before enjoying a variety of food from Gingham Café. Before leaving for the night each guest received a small parting gift. The speaker for the evening was Mr. Mike Brewer from 3M Unitek Health Care Academy. The topic of the night was “Who Is The Geriatric Patient And Are We Doing Enough”.

Tiffany Detelich, Amy Jo Joiner, Christina Sisk, Mica Pounds, Kenna Calhoun & Nina Norfleet

Reflections Office Manager, Gloria Henshaw organized the event and said they received 64 rsvp’s. “As much as it is to help with CE hours, it’s also so we can meet each other,” Henshaw said. “ It’s a dental community. It’s a family in which our common goals are the same, which is good oral health.” Henshaw’s goal is to grow it bigger and better every year. It’s a great opportunity for hygienists to meet each other and enjoy a mixer style continuing education course. S TO R Y & P H OTO G R A P H Y B Y L U C A S R YA N C H A M B E R S

On Sunday, December 4th The American Cancer Society held its 27th annual “Love Lights a Tree” event sponsored by Tennova Healthcare. The night began with a wonderful performance by the Immaculate Conception School choir directed by John Nicolosi followed by a very moving sermon by Pastor Jimmy Terry Sr. of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church. Every year someone who has dealt personally with cancer is inducted as an honorary chairperson, and this year’s inductee was Pastor Jimmy Terry Sr himself. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as he received a painting from the hosts of the evening to commemorate the night. The hosts were Lynne Griffey, Steve Jones, and Judith Castleberry. Every light on the tree, which stands tall in front of Tennova Healthcare, is a donation in memory of a loved one, and all proceeds from the event benefit the American Cancer Society.

That said, there are ways in which you can make your perfect day absolutely picture perfect, and the experts know just how to bring on the bliss. “It’s become more desirable to document the entire day from start to finish with more of a photo-journalistic and candid approach in addition to the traditional posed and group photos,” says Shel Keiffer, part of the husband-and-wife team at Wallflower Wedding Photography. Officially in business since 2013, Shel and her hubby Bill have combined decades of their professional experience behind the camera to develop wedding-day “wows,” quickly becoming one of the premier photographers in the Clarksville area; and they’ve seen every side of what makes bliss-worthy pics unfold. “Brides today expect highly artistic photographs that they can show off. This is the most important, most special day of their lives thus far, and they want to be captured in the best, most beautiful light. That’s our job as professional wedding photographers. Southern Flour Bakery

OAK GROVE, KENTUCKY

Rolling out everything from peanut brittle to Barbie cakes, Christie McKinney has taken her talent for all things sugary and turned it into a business, and her sweet confections have earned her quite the following all across the South. Her custom creations make the rounds at every kind of event from retirement parties to baby showers, and her blissful bites have become a wedding day Wow. Working closely with her clients to plan their specific needs as far as type of treat, flavors, themes, and just how many will get their sweet tooth filled, McKinney flips her mixers into high gear to whip up confectionary affection. Topping the love list are her signature sugar cookies, made from a recipe that’s been passed down through generations in her family. And while the recipe might be somewhat simple, there’s nothing ordinary about her designs, and that’s what keeps her clients addicted. “I think people love the imagination in them,” she says. “They’re unique, and one of the things that sets them apart is just how creative and fun they are.” Fun to look at, and even more fun to eat, as McKinney takes her cookie cut-outs and hand frosts them to look like everything imaginable, from reception-ready monogram designs to racy little bustiers that will spice up any lingerie party. Whatever your wish, Southern Flour Bakery has the perfect way to make your sweetest dreams come true. Photography Credit: Lorna Tyson Photography

PLANNING FOR HAPPILY EVER AFTER

A

sk any woman, especially one in a serious relationship who has visions of a poufy white dress dancing through her head, to name the three Cs, and she’ll likely rattle off the big three we all know and love: Color, Cut, and Clarity. After all, those are the three associated with diamonds and, consequently, with engagement rings. But as wedding season goes into full swing, there are three other C’s that should be brought up before you say, “I do.” In his very insightful article in a 2012 issue of Forbes, financial expert Jeff Landers got down and dirty about finances in a marriage, boiling it down to his own three points that begin with C: Communication, Consideration, and Continuation. Unromantic as it may seem, finances are a huge issue—sometimes even an impassible hurdle—that all couples need to address when they make it official. But because it can pose such an uncomfortable topic, many people sweep it aside, assuming that it will all play out in the end. And it certainly does. Unfortunately, not always in a good way. If fact, for some couples, talking about finances can lead to arguments that bring a blissfully blind marriage to a screeching halt— which means that it makes sense to talk dollars and cents before your wedding day. “Discussing finances before you get married is very important, but many people have the wedding day planned down to the last detail without having a clue what their future spouse has inhis or her checkbook,” says financial advisor Ladonna Dowdy of Dowdy Financial Group

50 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Bridal Issue

BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

in Clarksville. “Don’t be afraid to open that topic up to discussion, and start by sharing your own financial status—the good, the bad, and the ugly. Get it out there on the table, and hopefully your partner will do the same. If the partner isunwilling to do so, then you need to seriously rethink the marriage. More marriages fail because of finances than any other reason.” Obviously, that first C is the big one. You need to sit down as a couple and communicate about your finances and all that that entails. That means being honest about your spending habits, your existing debts, all of it. You need to decide together how—and if—you want to combine your finances, as well. Some couples prefer to keep separate accounts, while others want to unite everything in a joint account. You also need to get your plans in order as far as financial support. Will you both be contributing to the household income, or do you want to have only one income as you grow your family? What are you each making now, and will that change anytime soon? These are all things that many couples tend to gloss over, but that gloss wears off when reality hits and you’re not just playing house. C number two? Consideration. What you’re considering here are your financial options. Now that you’ve communicated about the big stuff, you have to think about whether or not it’s wise—or desirable—to combine your finances and assets. Some people take the pro-active route and sign a pre-nup so that, in the

event of divorce, assets are divided in such a way as to be satisfying to both parties, and anything brought into the marriage can be defined and distributed properly. You’re both protecting yourself against the worst-case scenario, and that’s no small thing. Last but not least is Continuation. What are you continuing? Financial independence. Even if you’re only hanging on to the bare minimum, it’s important to your own sense of security to know that you could still be somewhat financially stable if the marriage ended. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be fully employed throughout your marriage or keep fully separate bank accounts, but you will need to know that you have full access to your marital money; that you have fully-established credit on your own; and that you do have a bank account that’s solely in your name—even if that account only has enough money in it to keep your head above water for a few months on your own. As you delve into the topic of finances, it’s important to remember the goal. You’re not trying to start an argument or criticize one another. hough one might wonder if the preacher-man might have been suffering from a case of butterfingers when it came time to hand out the wedding bands, even falling rings (and a few showery drizzles) couldn’t put a damper on the day that Paula Harrington and Ryan Atkins went from sweethearts to man and wife. It was rather reflective of the couple’s personalities, in fact, a peek into their go-with-the-flow way of thinking and ability to see the humor in things.

tale, and Ryan gave that to me. Our whole story is a fairy tale, really, from our friendship to the world turning upside down and showing me that love and happiness was right there. Every once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale,” she says with a smile, recalling the proposal that came a mere four months later at a Halloween party for which she had dressed to have a truly magical night. “I was wearing a Fairy Godmother costume, and my fairy tale wish came true.”

Their story began much like many others starting with a high school friendship that remained steadfast throughout college. And while that relationship might easily have remained squarely in the infamous “friend zone,” things hit high gear when they had the chance to reconnect at a Nascar Race in the summer of 2015, sending them spinning off the sidelines of the raceway and headlong into the pages of a storybook. “Once we actually started dating, we fell in love pretty quickly,” Paula says of their fast-track romance, though it could well be argued that the long span of their friendship gave their timeline gas. “I’d always wanted a fairy

Nine months later on August 6, 2016, Paula traded in her Fairy Godmother gown for one even more magical when she stood before Ryan in a ceremony at Madison Street United Methodist in Clarksville, wearing a ruched satin-bodice gown with lace straps that crossed at the back. After the pair exchanged vows to love and cherish one another, they joined their friends and family at a gloriously fun reception held at Old Glory Distilling Company—where, despite the fact that the stills weren’t yet in production, spirits still ran high. “When we planned the night, our core vision was for it to be really celebratory. We didn’t want it to feel stuffy

and cold,” Paula explains. “We really wanted people to have fun.” And have fun they did, though there might have been need for a few hankies on hand: “Our first dance was to a song called ‘Daddy’s Boots’ by Dustin Lynch. The first time that Ryan played it for me, I absolutely cried like a baby. It’s beautiful, and it’s the perfect song to explain the relationship between Ryan and my daddy,” says the self-proclaimed Daddy’s girl. Having dined on delicious fare from PSR Events, the newlyweds brought the event to its sweet finish when they cut into a three-tiered confection of buttercream bliss crowned by a topper scripted with what might well be considered their tagline: “Happily Ever Atkins.” Ending things on an even higher note, Paula and Ryan made their escape to head to Orlando, where they honeymooned at Disney World, a place considered far and wide as the Happiest Place on Earth. “I’m slightly obsessed, so I was in heaven!” Paula says. Now with their feet firmly back on the ground, the newly married couple resides in Clarksville.

veryone expects to see fireworks on the Fourth of July, but for Audrey Vincent and Wesley Ipock, sparks were lighting up more than the night sky when they met at a local lake on July 3, 2014. Having both recently become single, the pair was unknowingly set up by mutual friends who invited them to their lakeside festivities; and while they might not have been formally introduced, Audrey and Wesley set off fireworks right away, proving that falling in love can happen in an instant. “People are always saying that when you know, you know; but I’d never taken it seriously, and I thought that it was the silliest thing I had ever heard until I met Wesley,” Audrey says. “We were so natural from day one, and we just clicked. Of course, I noticed right away that he’s good looking, but his personality was like no one else I had ever met before. To me, he’s amazing.” Equally amazed by Audrey, Wesley knew that he had found his perfect match and made it official by proposing just over a year after they started dating during a night out on the town in Nashville in mid-September of 2015. “Our favorite thing to do together in the fall is going to haunted houses, and we’d

gone into Nashville with another couple to visit a haunted house. Afterwards, we all decided to go downtown for a while and hang out and do some karaoke. When Wesley went up onstage to sing, I went up with him so that we could dance together. All of a sudden he stopped singing and got down on one knee,” Audrey recalls. “I was a little confused at first, and then I became even more confused when I looked out and saw a surprise group of seven of our closest friends standing in the crowd around the stage all smiling up at me. It was perfect!” Standing once again in front of smiling faces whose love and excitement could have set off a fireworks display worthy of any holiday, Audrey and Wesley

exchanged vows a year later on October 8, 2016 at Burdoc Farms, where their shared love of haunted houses was swapped out for an appreciation of rustic charm. “It has that country vintage feel there, so it was the perfect place to have our perfect day,” Audrey explains. Perfect though it might have been, not everything went off without a hitch. As Audrey walked down the aisle in a very nontraditional ivory and blush gown, her well-hidden garter decided to make an early appearance, slipping down to her ankle as her father escorted her to the altar. With one trip hazard already becoming an uninvited guest, Audrey’s father nearly took a tumble himself after he handed her off to the groom, getting all caught up in the

moment—and in her dress—as he kissed her cheek and turned away. “His feet got caught in my gown, and he almost fell over!” she laughs. After saying their I do’s and repositioning the garter the newlyweds marched carefully back down the aisle, joining their guests as they assembled for the fun at a reception in Keith Glen overlooking a lighted pond at Burdoc Farms. Having danced, dined, laughed, and cried, Audrey and Wesley tossed off both bouquet and garter before being sent off to honeymoon in Ireland. Now back home in Madisonville, the couple is looking forward to keeping their sparks flying high in a fireworks display that lasts forever.

On the Front Porch of Forever |

ront porches are an immutable part of life in the Deep South, a place where sweet tea flows freely and lifelong friendships grow strong. And for Clarksville natives Amanda Poole and Kyle Kondwros, the front porch was where lifelong friendship became eternal love. Having first met in junior high, the pair certainly shared a long history together, growing up alongside one another in a small town where family, friends, and community pride run high. But while life might have taken them temporarily in different directions, when Amanda and Kyle reconnected in 2010, their unexpected run-in became 56 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Bridal Issue

the jumping-off point to go from old childhood friends to grown-up sweethearts. Over the next five years of dating, the couple took their time to cement their bond, secure in the knowledge that they had each found their other half. “Neither of us was really in a rush to get married, but we still knew that what we have would last forever,” Amanda says. Finally proposing that they begin living out forever in late July of 2015, Kyle popped the question at the tail end of a family vacation to the beach, asking his beloved for her hand in the midst of packing to go home. “I kind of had a feeling that he was going to do it while we were away, but when

he actually did it, it seemed to come out of the blue!” Amanda says with a laugh. Nine months later on an April day that started out anything but blue, Amanda and Kyle said their I Do’s on the front porch of her great-grandmother’s farmhouse in Clarksville. “I wanted it to be something really classic and vintage, something with that sense of warmth and welcoming that comes with the country,” explains Amanda. “I didn’t want glitz and glamour, because that’s just not who we are. For us, it was important to showcase the love we share and to be surrounded by our closest family and friends.” And surrounded they were, as loved ones

gathered together under gray and drizzly skies to watch them exchange their vows. “It rained all morning, but I was oddly at ease, and I just didn’t let it stress me. Somehow, I knew in my heart it was going to all work out, and it actually did. By the time it came for me to walk down the aisle, the rain had stopped.” The rain might have stopped, but the excitement had apparently reached the tipping point for Amanda, who got a little hot under the portrait color of her ivory ruched bodice gown and jumped the gun by kissing Kyle before the officiant gave the green light. “I was so excited, I honestly didn’t even realize what I’d done!,” she laughs. Having finally made it official, the couple

dodged a shower of colored confetti being tossed by their guests as they took their march back down the aisle, their ears still ringing with the sound an air horn that Kyle’s mother had unexpectedly blasted after they’d been pronounced man and wife. Trading in one blast for another, Kyle and Amanda joined their guests to celebrate at the Sango Event Center, where everyone feasted on an array of tasty barbecue made by Kyle’s uncle that paired up perfectly with the Southern comfort favorites catered by Taste Buds. Showing off their saucy side, they gave out bottles of barbecue sauce made from Kyle’s grandfather’s secret recipe, labeling each with the message: “Thanks for spicing up our special

day!” Balancing out the spice with some sweetnesss, Kyle and Amanda cut into an elegant white cake adorned with yellow and white flowers before heading off to their honeymoon in Aruba. “I would sum up our wedding day by saying it was imperfectly perfect,” Amanda says. “I absolutely loved everything about it, mishaps and all!” Now back at home in Clarksville, the newly married couple is looking forward to see what else forever holds in store…

Alli Alberhasky

Fields of Forever |

lli Alberhasky may have been someone else’s date when she met Lee Skov in May 2011 on her way to the senior ring dance at the United States Naval Academy, but the minute the Louisville native saw the Texas farm boy in his Navy dress uniform, her heart was Lonestar struck in love. Lucky for Alli, Lee had cottoned on, as well, and the seeds of romance were ready to grow. As he finished his time at the Naval Academy, Lee and Alli had to take their relationship digital, Facetiming and Skyping constantly to keep their relationship in real-time. “The distance was hard, but we never had a doubt that we would be together forever,” says Alli. Naturally enough, the long-distance lovebirds took every opportunity they could to spend time face-to-face, taking turns visiting and obsessively counting down the days until they’d see each other again. Mercifully enough, their separation ended after two years, and Lee was moved to Alabama and joined Alli in attending school at the University of South Alabama. Having spent so much time apart, the couple became nearly inseparable, their love taking even

58 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Bridal Issue

greater root over the next few years as they continued to date. Knowing that the field they’d planted was finally ready for harvest, Lee asked Alli to marry him in January of 2015, taking her on a walk that she will remember forever. “My favorite place to be when we lived in Alabama was the University of South Alabama Glenn Sebastian Nature Trail, and I loved going there to walk the trails with Lee and our pit bull Diesel. Lee had come back early from a trip home to his family in Texas, and he asked me to go on a hike with him,” Alli recalls. “One of the paths that we’d always walk at the end breaks open to a gorgeous open field, and when we got there, he showed me a new toy he’d just bought for Diesel. He put it on Diesel’s nose for a trick that they do, and he told me to get it on camera. When we switched so that I could try the trick with Diesel, Lee told me to open the toy, and there was a ring in it!” Just over eighteen months later on August 27, 2016, Alli took another unforgettable walk as she went down the aisle at Burdoc Farms to join Lee, wearing a vintage-inspired champagne dress over boots that were made for marrying the man of her dreams. “Lee and I both had a pair of boots custom

made in El Paso for the wedding—mine, with the wedding date stitched into the sides and hearts in place of the dashes on the pull-straps while Lee’s boots have SF cut into the skin at the stop for Skov Family Farms, where Lee works as a fifth generation farmer on his family’s farm,” Alli explains. Standing toe to toe, boot to boot, heart to heart, Alli and Lee exchanged vows as their family and friends looked on, ready to plant seeds in the field of forever. Later joining their loved ones to celebrate in Burdoc’s converted tobacco barn, the newlyweds dined on a spread worthy of a hat-tip from Texas, feasting on Lonestar state favorites like tender pulled pork, sausage, and brisket—all perfect for sidling up alongside hearty delights like mac and cheese, green beans, and coleslaw. After setting their boots to work on the dance floor, the duo sliced into a three-tiered masterpiece of red-velvet and strawberry cakes filled with decadent cream cheese before two-stepping it off to start their new life together. Now back in El Paso, Alli and Lee are looking forward to honeymooning in Santorini, Greece.

Claire Rodgers

The Last First Date |

hen your boss-slash-friend says they want to set you up on a date with a friend of theirs, it is professional suicide to say no! Such a question running through the mind of Claire Rodgers would have been quite understandable, but rather than shrugging off the suggestion or managing to be “super busy,” the Tennessee native agreed, taking it on trust that the guy she was being fixed up with might just be a winner. And a winner, he was—or at least, he was hoping so when he scored tickets to play-offs game for the Nashville Predators. And while the ice on the hockey rink might have chilled the air around them, things got heated between Claire and Chris Bolinger, quickly going from casual dates to a serious romance that her family welcomed with open arms.

Spending more and more time with Claire and her “super close and crazy” family at their home in Gallatin, the just-over-the-Kentucky border boy knew that he had found the love of his life and during a Rodgers family trip to Panama City Beach in June 2016, Chris dropped to one knee in the sugary white Florida sand asking Claire to walk with him forever. Forever started six months later, on December 3, 2016, when Claire donned a strapless champagne satin gown to walk down the aisle at The Silo Event Center, each step of her University of Kentucky-blue pedicured feet taking her closer to the future she ha always dreamed of. “I’m a Tenessee Vols fan, so the blue toenail polish was definitely a sacrifice, but for Chris it was one I was willing to make,” she laughs. Perhaps owing to the gusto with which they shared their first kiss after saying their

“I do’s,” Claire’s veil took a tumble from her head, surrendering its spot as it fell to the floor. “Oops,” she says with a shrug and an easy smile. Smiling even more at the reception, the newlyweds joined their friends and family for a night full of celebratory fun, dancing like fools and dining on a buffet of low country favorites like pulled barbecue, smashed potatoes, and mac and cheese. After exchanging blissful bites of a three-tiered cake topped in a bounty of dusty pink and magenta roses, Chris and Claire took their leave to jet off to paradise, honeymooning in Jamaica before returning to start their lives in Hopkinsville, where Tennessee-born Claire and Kentucky boy Chris will prove that Orange and Blue really can be a match made in heaven.

Laura Kolb

A Work Engagement |

By Liesel Schmidt

hile it’s hardly unusual to find yourself gazing longingly into the mesmerizing eyes of your boss as you imagine the beautiful children you’ll have together after your fairytale wedding and a honeymoon in the tropics, for 24-year-old Louisville native Laura Kolb, the daydream became reality when she walked down the aisle to marry Kyle Dattilo on a sunny April day in 2016. Having fallen for the famous “Kyle smile” when she interviewed for a job at the local restaurant he was managing, Laura knew from their first meeting that he had something special, and the pair made an instant connection. “He had the biggest, most beautiful smile I’d ever seen, and he just drew me in right away when we talked,” Laura recalls.

Kicking off the romance at a rooftop restaurant above the Four Seasons Hotel, Kyle later popped the big question just after sunset, dropping to one knee amidst the magical misty glow of the colorful fountain lights at the reflecting pool in Forest Park. Nine months later, wearing a lace A-line strapless gown with a sweetheart neckline, Laura walked down the aisle at Belle Hollow in Clarksville to marry her sweetheart in a rustic-chic wedding that reflected the young couple’s fun personalities and love of simplicity. After exchanging their vows, Kyle and Laura celebrated with their friends and family at a reception prepared and catered by the

talented team at Belle Hollow, feasting on tender steak served in a rich mushroom and scallion sauce with roasted seasonal veggies and gooey mac-ncheese. As the event got under way, guests enjoyed dancing to music provided by Lt. Dan’s DJ and later put the newlyweds in the hot seat, cheering them on as they played The Shoe Game. “Kyle and I had to sit back to back, each holding a pink shoe and a blue shoe, and hold them up to answer questions that the DJ asked us. It was hilarious,” Laura laughs. After cutting into a delicious chocolate raspberry cake, the lovebirds flew the coop to head off to their honeymoon in Cancun. The Dattilos now live in Louisville, where they work side-by-side keeping things running like a well-oiled machine at Kyle’s business.

he song they chose for their first dance might have been called “I Know She Ain’t Ready,” but Melissa Lucius and Jacob Dougherty were more than ready to step out as man and wife when their wedding day rolled around on March 26, 2016. Two years to the day from when the couple started dating after meeting at the go-kart track where Melissa worked and Jacob’s need for speed make him a raceway regular, the former Ohio natives put their romance into high gear, setting speed records when Jacob said “I do” before the pastor had even finished his words. “It was hilarious, so we all had a good laugh over that one,” Melissa recalls with a smile. Despite the mileage placed between them when Jacob received orders to the Army base at Fort Campbell, the couple knew they were on-track for marriage and took advantage of one of her many weekend visits from Ohio to take a tour of The Tanglewood House; but Jacob firmly pulled in for the win by proposing during their walk-through

Photography | Wallflower Wedding Photography of the space. “It was absolutely perfect for us,” said Melissa. “We both love simplicity, and we could really envision having our wedding there.” Six months later, the pair took another important turn in their relationship in that very place. As Melissa stood before Jacob in a strapless ivory gown adorned in lace applique, their friends and loved ones gathered together to celebrate the new direction of their future. With the ceremony in their rearview mirror, the newlyweds floored the fun when they joined their guests at the reception held on-site at Tanglewood. After fueling up for the festivities with juicy stuffed chicken breast, tender pulled pork, and Southern favorites like loaded mashed potatoes and corn, the bride and groom pulled a fast one by starting their first dance on the wrong song. “We had a miscommunication about when we would be doing our first dance as a married couple, so we started dancing to a song that wasn’t actually our song!” Melissa laughs. “My cousin, who had taken on the role as our DJ, handled it perfectly and played our song

immediately after that, so everything worked out in the end. And neither of us minded the extended moment we shared for our ‘first’ dance.” Foregoing a traditional tiered cake for cupcakes baked by the masters at The Sweetest Batch Cupcakery, the pair shared bites of a Red Velvet cupcake for their cake cutting while their guests bit into bliss with an assortment of icing-topped treats with fun flavors like Funky Monkey, Wedding Cake, Cookies and Cream, and traditional chocolate. “They were all delicious, and everyone absolutely loved them,” says Melissa. With so much love—and sugar—giving them a rush, the newlyweds could easily have kept things speeding along to their honeymoon, but their plans for a getaway were put in idle by deployment, which has now been completed. Even so, they’re still headed for their Happily Ever After, having created a home together in Oak Grove.

etting engaged should leave you feeling breathless, exhilarated, excited, and on top of the world…and that’s just how Vicky Bussell felt when Clifton Fludd proposed to her on a summer day in 2001. Quite literally, in fact, as the pair was perched at the very top of a Ferris wheel when Clifton popped the question, making their thrill ride even more thrilling by asking her to go with him on the ride of a lifetime. Having met while they were both out with their families in downtown Clarksville in late January of 2000, Vicky knew from their very first date that she had found “The One,” and that surety only deepened over the next few months as they continued to date. Tickets in hand for an unforgettable adrenaline rush, the pair took their seats to soar up to heaven, their hearts still flying high when their feet came back to the ground.

62 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Bridal Issue

Higher yet they climbed 15 years later on May 28, 2016, when Vicky walked down the aisle at the James E. Bruce Convention Center in Hopkinsville, dressed for the most exciting day of her life in a strapless ivory satin gown that took her groom’s breath away. And with their guests gathered around to watch them vow to forever, Vicky and Clifton handed in their single-admission tickets to life and firmly took hold of their future together. Later joining their friends and family for some amusement and fun, the newlyweds fed their excitement with a delicious dinner of grilled chicken and baked potatoes before slicing into a three-tiered white buttercream confectionary dream. Around and around on the dance floor they went, laughing and celebrating their way through the night, only coming back down to solid ground to set off for a honeymoon in Gatlinburg. Now residing in Clarksville, the thrill-loving couple is looking forward to staying side by side through ups and downs, boldly taking whatever rides come.

BLESSINGS IN THE MIDST OF A BATTLE After a delivery by C-section, this inspiring, local mother welcomed four healthy babies into the world, each weighing between two and three pounds. Now, her beautiful little blessings are fueling her to face the fight of her life.

or 29 year-old Kayla Gaytan the news that she was pregnant was something she’d never expected to hear, having been told only weeks before that she would most likely never be able to have children. At such a young age such a forecast on the future would be devastating for anyone, but for Kayla it was yet one more emotional blow. And she had already endured so much. As a newly married woman, Kayla should have still been in the throes of the honeymoon stage when she noticed a suspicious lump on her neck that was later diagnosed as Hodgkins Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. With the diagnosis came an aggressive plan of action for chemotherapy treatments, and so she and her new husband Charles went into full battle mode. As a sergeant in the Army stationed at Ft. Campbell, Charles Gaytan certainly knew his way around combat, and

together with Kayla, the newlyweds formed a strengthened unit to face the greatest battle of their lives. Over the next five months, Kayla received rounds of the powerful treatment, showing success that came with the word they hungered to hear: remission. The happy news did not come without its shadow of sadness, however, as the treatments had essentially increased the likelihood that Kayla’s body would go into early menopause, making pregnancy nearly impossible. Already the mother of two, Kayla knew the joys of bringing a new life into the world, but she and Charles had shared dreams of having children together and growing their family—a dream that most newlyweds share without thought that it will never come to be. Their hopes dashed, the news that Kayla was, in fact, expecting was miraculous—and even more so was the news that she was pregnant

with quadruplets. With the heartbeats of four healthy fetuses showing strong, Kayla’s doctors made it their goal to help her carry the pregnancy to at least 28 weeks. Their highest hopes were for 32, but Kayla set her sites on 34, determined to defy all expectation. The pregnancy ran smoothly. Her blood pressure was normal and the babies were developing at a healthy rate. And all indications showed that Kayla’s cancer was remaining in remission. But intuition told her otherwise, and unusual swelling in her neck impelled her to get further testing. After a biopsy of her lymph nodes proved that the cancer had indeed returned—fast and with fury—Kayla’s doctors knew that she needed chemo as soon as possible. Just over 28 weeks pregnant, chemo would have meant a death sentence for the babies growing in her belly. So Kayla and her doctors decided to put treatment off as long as they could without

LOCALE Huneycutt Realty Unveils Bus

Buses are a common sight in many cities all over the world, and that vast expanse of hulking metal offers the perfect canvas for the marketing mind to play. And why not? Buses are like a moving billboard, travelling far and wide from stop to stop and catching the eyes of everyone on the road. It was for that very reason that Huneycutt Realtors decided to literally get on the bus, partnering with the Clarksville Transit System to unveil their branded bus on December 13, 2016, so that their team of realty experts could get even more on a roll. “It’s an ideal way to promote our business all over the city because the bus is constantly on the go,” says Tina Huneycutt-Ellis of Huneycutt Realtors. And on the go it certainly will be. Over the course of the next three years, Huneycutt’s bus will be en route all over Clarksville, spreading the word and getting clients onboard. “The Clarksville Transit advertising program is a great asset for supporting Public Transit and it providesexcellent, eye-catching, and bold advertising for local businesses,” says Clarksville Transit System Marketing Coordinator Norman Quirion. For businesses like Huneycutt, that’s one bus worth catching.

LOCALE APSU Students Perform Service Work in Caribbean Over Winter Break A group of Austin Peay State University students recently spent a week during winter break in the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago, volunteering their time during an annual intensive service trip. This year’s group of 18 students traveled with Dr. Matthew Kenney, director of Austin Peay’s President’s Emerging Leaders Program (PELP), to the small town of La Romain, where they worked with Habitat for Humanity on a local housing project.

“This group was so unified and worked exceptionally well together throughout the trip,” Kenney said. “Our primary purpose for being there is (constructing the house), and even though many of the students had never even used power tools before, they took a project that was just a poured slab of concrete and worked together to finish the project.” This year marked the sixth time that Kenney has led a group of Austin Peay students to Trinidad and Tobago, and the ninth house build through the collaboration between Austin Peay and Habitat for Humanity. “These PELP students know that they’re going somewhere off the beaten path, so they want to experience the culture and see how normal (Trinidad and Tobago) citizens live,” Kenney said. “We didn’t stay far from the construction site in a hotel, we stayed in (common) housing. We wanted to give the students a chance to experience what normal life is like in the country.” The Presidents Emerging Leaders Program helps prepare students at APSU for a lifetime of leadership. The program creates an envi-

ronment that develops leaders for the future through the twin virtues of scholarship and service. PELP students must maintain a cumulative collegiate GPA of at least 3.25 and they must enroll in at least 12 credit hours per semester. For more information about this project, or the President’s Emerging Leaders Program, contact Kenney at 931-221-6398.

Suits for Soldiers Farmers Insurance launched the Suits for Soldiers program in 2015, collecting gently used suits that would provide transitioning soldiers with business attire that they often do not have. Joining this nationwide initiative, the Greer Carr Agency in Clarksville collected over 210 suits to donate to the local chapter of the USO on Thursday, December 15, 2016. Though the program officially ended November 30, Clarksville’s Greer Carr Agency office will continue their collection throughout the year, serving as a drop-off point for suits and work-appropriate dress attire. “The USO has been very appreciative of our collection, and this has also made many of our customers aware of a growing need in our community that they didn’t even know existed,” says agent Marcalee Baxter, who facilitated the program at Greer Carr in Clarksville. “Being a part of this program has been a great honor for us, and it’s really given us a great way to show our support of the veterans as they make their transition.”
