letter from the publisher

As a community built on military pride, we’ve certainly got reason to be screaming proud of the 101st Airborne Division and show them our thanks for the 75 years of selfless bravery and service they’ve given us in their time at Fort Campbell. As they celebrate this monumentous anniversary, we’re honored to highlight the men and women who dedicate their lives to keeping our country safe; so check out our Salute to Service section to see what’s been happening in the Clarksville area to give our military active duty and vets the attention they so deserve. As a small community, we stand together in so many ways, and that’s something that keeps us strong and connected. In our many community events and charitable efforts that happen all throughout the year, we’re feeding back into the growth and the continued vibrancy of this community, so we hope you’ll join us in making the effort to get our and stay involved and to support the local businesses who make our area so unique. Enjoy the coming changes of fall and keep your eye out for our Taste of the South issue hitting the stands in October. We’ll be digging in to some delicious articles, so get ready to savor it all!

WILMA RUDOLPH EVENT CENTER

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE

Clarksville Association of Realtors just held its 4th annual Handbags for Hope, a fundraiser to support Urban Ministry’s SafeHouse for Women. The popular event moved this year to the Wilma Rudolph Event Center, where hundreds gathered for dinner, music, a silent auction, and the greatly anticipated live auction. This year’s items included more than 200 handbags, wallets and tote bags for women and men. The live auction featured special themed bags which contained hundreds of dollars worth of special items. Urban Ministry’s SafeHouse for Women shelters and supports victims of domestic violence. The facility is fully staffed 24 hours a day, and provides safety, peace and comfort to women and children in need. This year, specially designated bags were auctioned to support the CAR YPN Mike Groves Memorial Scholarship Fund as well. This year’s event was quite successful, netting approximately $100,000 for Urban Ministry’s SafeHouse for Women.

Props to the Pups By Liesel Schmidt

There’s an undeniable charm and magnetism to dogs that brings people of all ages and walks of life together, as those waggy-tailed balls of fur have lively personalities and adorable little faces just begging to be loved. Unfortunately, not all dogs are so fortunate to have good homes, and so organizations like the Humane Society make it their greatest mission to unite dogs with open-hearted individuals and families who just can’t wait to adopt one—or more—of those pups in need. Getting the community involved is an important part of keeping the Humane Society wagging along—not only in adopting, but also in funding the work that the organization does to prevent overpopulation as well as the needless suffering and euthanasia of companion animals. And what better way to build a bond that will last a lifetime than to welcome the members of the community to come out and enjoy time together as families, to pause for the paws and get in on all the festive fun literally taking off at a local event that’s all about the tail waggers that give our hearts wings. Partnering up with Fortera Credit Union, Clarksville Regional Airport the Humane Society of ClarksvilleMontgomery County will be hosting the inaugural Wags and Wings Family Fun Fest on October 14, 2017. “We really wanted an event that our supporters could enjoy with the entire family—pets included—and the Wags and Wings Family Fun Fest will allow the Humane Society to reach not only their traditional supporters, but a much greater audience,” says executive director of the Humane Society of Clarksville-Montgomery County, Amy Shaver. “We’ve always prided ourselves in finding unique ways to raise funds for our cause, and with our great

partners, Fortera Credit Union and Clarksville Regional Airport, the sky is literally the limit!” “We’re excited to join with Clarksville Regional Airport and the Humane Society to host this all new family-focused event, and it really provides the perfect opportunity to encourage the public to visit the stunning airport facility and highlight its services at the same time as educating the community about the great work done by our Humane Society and raising funds to support our local chapter,” adds Tom Kane, President and CEO of Fortera Credit Union. Combining a number of attractions and events for lovers of all things aviation with more than a few activities for doggie devotees to drool over, the festival is the perfect way to spend a day out as a family, whether you’re already a proud puppy owner or are just out sniffing around. With so much to see and do, chances are you’ll come home with more than a few memories—and maybe even a new addition to the family of the four-legged kind. Taking off at 10:00 a.m., Wags and Wings will feature family-focused activities including musical entertainment; educational and aviationthemed displays and exhibits; airplane and helicopter rides; skydiving demonstrations; an inflatable play area; and live entertainment—the most notable of which are shows from Disc-Connected K9s, a world-famous Frisbee-catching team of acrobatic dogs and trainers who perform freestyle moves and choreographed tricks to fast-paced, energetic music.

September 2017 | vipclarksville.com • 19

“The Disc-Connected K9s bring a blend of action and precision entertainment to every show they perform, and the fact they’re all rescue dogs makes them the perfect feature entertainment for this event,” says Airport Manager John Patterson. Perfect, indeed, as these talented dogs jump so high they practically fly through the air. All that fun would hardly be complete without tasty kibble and some wag-worthy swag, so festival goers will be able to purchase merchandise from local vendors and enjoy a variety of beverages and great eats perfect for festival time—perhaps the most appropriate of which will be mouth-watering gourmet chicken wings that’ll leave your taste buds begging for more. From four-legged tail waggers to winged wonders, from propellers to paws, Wags and Wings has something for the whole family to enjoy— and that’s definitely reason enough to leash-up and come in for a landing. A Hangar Party featuring one of Clarksville’s best bands will follow the Family Fun Fest from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Hosted by the Humane Society, the ticketed event will feature fun for the over-21 crowd including delicious heavy hors d’oeuvres, drinks, entertainment, door prizes, a silent auction, and a cash bar! Tickets are $50 per person, $500 for a reserved table of 8.

Wonder Kids Triathlon STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE

The 5th Annual Wonder Kids Triathlon brought 150 kids between the ages of 3 and 12 to Clarksville’s New Providence Pool. The triathlon includes a swim, bicycle ride and run that vary in distance for each age group, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Parks & Recreation’s Tina Boysha said registration for the popular event, which aims to get Clarksville’s youth exposed to healthy outdoor activities, has maxed out in each of its first five years.Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan spoke to the crowd at the start of the event. “This is exciting,” McMillan said. “I want to thank Parks & Recreation for organizing this wonderful event. It’s great to see so many young Clarksvillians out here ready to participate in this triathlon.” “I have to tell you that I’ve run triathlons before, but I wouldn’t want to go up against these great competitors today.”

Director of Student Services at Daymar College, Angela McChesney, worked with Daymar’s Karla Fuss to bring to life this year’s Back to School event. “We partnered with Infinity Dance and Fitness Academy to bring members of our community around the world and back to school,” McChesney said. “Kids each receive a passport and then they get to visit cultural stations around the campus which represent different countries.” Hundreds of kids showed up with their parents to enjoy a variety of activities, learn fun facts and try their hand at arts and crafts. Each student also received a free gift bag of school supplies to help get them ready for the upcoming school year.

Christian Way Cafe Ribbon Cutting STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE

Milt and Janie Corley of Christian Way Farms celebrated the official oppening of the newly added Christian Way Cafe with a ribbon cutting. “We are honored to see representatives from the Kentucky’s Governor’s office as well as Hopkinsville’s Mayor Hendricks and so many others,” Janie Corley said. “We are so appreciative of the way our community supports Christian Way Farms.” “We’re excited about what this cafe is going to allow us to do for our customers. Our food sales have consistently increased over the years. We know that meeting our customers’ needs will be so much easier to do in an actual building with a professional kitchen. This cafe will allow us to serve items beyond just ball park food,” Corley said. The Corleys have teamed with Hunt Brothers to add pizza and wings to their menu.

Dueling Pianos STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCAS CHAMBERS

While many events have been held at the Old Glory Distillery, the Dueling Piano’s was the first event held solely by them. It was such a highly sought after event that a second night was added after the first night sold out in just under three days. Dueling Piano’s International was on hand performing a very wide variety of songs and even gave the crowd a chance to participate right along with the musicians. Guests were also able to try the signature spirits that Old Glory has become so well known for, visit the various food trucks that were serving up dinner, and could even take a tour in the distillery throughout the day. Cadiz Music and Food Festival STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE

The 2nd Annual Cadiz Music and Food Festival drew big crowds thanks to a line-up of great music, food vendors, and perfect fall-like weather. Local businesses and civic organizations worked together to bring the festival to life again this year. People like Bill Stevens, Elizabeth Wallace and Kyle Cunningham were surrounded by dozens of volunteers who worked together to make it all possible. Kim Meredith is one of the volunteers on the Community Planning Group. “We started this festival last year, so this is our 2nd annual,” Meredith said. “This year we have 6 bands that ranged from gospel to 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s rock music. And we concluded the night with the great Regi Wooten Band.”

Celebrate Clarksville Fashion S M I T H -T R A H E R N M A N S I O N

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE

Bella Fogg recently hosted Celebrate Clarksville Fashion, a fashion show to raise money for the Smith-Trahern Mansion. The event featured a DJ, catered hor-d’oeuvres by Nicoletta’s, and a silent auction with numerous items donated by local businesses. Only 50 tickets were sold for the fundraiser, which ensured a small but enthusiastic crowd. Fogg said the event organizers decided that the night’s proceeds would benefit the mansion after seeing the facility and hearing its story. “We fell in love with this place the minute we saw it, so we wanted to help,” Fogg said. After a social hour, about two dozen models from Nashville’s Dan Talent Group turned the main room into a runway. They descended the mansion’s famous staircase wearing outfits from four local boutiques-Couture Crush, Rogate’s, Sacer and Savive and It’s A Boutique Thing. Other sponsors included It’s A Hair Thing and Graphic Design by Jacqueline Powers. Fogg says she hopes that this is the first of what will become an annual event.

Story by Liesel Schmidt Photography courtesy of Ahna Bella Turning her passion for fashion into a platform for reaching out to her peers, 17 year-old Clarksville native Ahna Isabella Herrera launched herself into the blogosphere in the summer of 2016 to start Ahna Bella, a style blog where daily self-expression keeps her feed buzzing. With the tagline “Southern class with a little bit of sass,” the blog is just that, taking Herrera’s long-held (and, dare we say —genetic?) love of all things fashion to create a skillfully-styled page of ensembles that show off her gift for pairing every piece with just the right accessories to hit the street in style. “The blog has been a great way for me to really explore my love for fashion and show other girls how to feel classy and stylish at an affordable price,” Herrera explains. As a student, affordability is certainly the name of the game, though this soon-to-be high school graduate does love her labels—counting Gucci, Chanel, Marc Jacobs, and Tommy Hilfiger at the top of her list. Having grown up watching her mother bring her own vision to life in Mildred & Mable’s, a charming little gift shop and clothing boutique located downtown on Franklin Street, Herrera learned the art of design and the importance of style from an early age; and that knowledge has fueled her along in her course toward a career in fashion merchandising. Her street-style smarts serve her well, as the high/low balance is one of the ways one maintains the edge in today’s market. And as she posts her hopes of attending Auburn University at the top of her list in her plans pursue her degree, Herrera keeps her blog growing by proving with every snap, tweet, and share that the biggest thing trending in fashion is being passionate and wearing your personality with pride. G.I. Jane Day STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE

Tennessee Titans cheerleaders and spouses of the players and coaching staff were treated to a day of negotiating obstacles and rappelling as part of G.I. Jane Day. Approximately 40 women associated with the Titans spent the day at The Sabalauski Air Assault School as part of an event which supports the ongoing community relations and partnership between the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, and the NFL team. There were 101 personnel that trained them on the proper way to attack various obstacles along the course. They were then loaded into Blackhawks and transported to the range for additional training. Fort Campbell hosts dozens of similar events each year as part of its community outreach program.

Whether you’re tailgating at the stadium or cheering from home, this fanfriendly guide makes game day eats as exciting as the game itself. There’s no one better to deliver that experience than Daina Falk. A nationally recognized game day expert, cook, and lifelong fan who grew up in the world of sports, Daina combines her passions for sports, food, and sports fan culture to create more than 150 simply delicious fangating recipes along with advice on how to fangate like a pro. You’ll find classics like slow-cooked ribs and sky-high stadium chili alongside fresh twists on much-loved dishes and flavors inspired by local traditions.

insider anecdotes about life as the daughter of a famous sports agent, heaps of athlete stats, and info about stadiums, this cookbook is the perfect gift for sports fans of all stripes who love to eat—and those who love to cook for them.

Professional athletes including LeBron James, Andre Agassi, Boomer Esiason, Michael Jordan and more contribute their own favorite recipes as well. With

A few days ago I had the pleasure of interviewing Daina. Excerpts of our interview follow:

DAINA FALK grew up surrounded by professional athletes who were clients of her sports agent father, David Falk. Daina created Hungry Fan, Fangating, and other brands that marry sports and food for the ultimate fan experience. On her website HungryFan.com, she covers a wide range of topics, including tailgating recipes, athlete spotlights, and more.

VIP: There are quite a few tailgate cookbooks. What sets your book apart from the rest?

VIP: Give our VIP readers an overview of your book, which was released in August of 2016.

DAINA FALK (DF): The easiest way to answer that question is that part of it is my personal story, growing up around athletes and my mother says when I was in the womb I traveled with her on an exhibition tour with some NBA players. I have done this quite literally since I was born. I have forged fantastic lasting relationships with athletes that have lasted until now. I have been really big on sports since I was a small kid. The main thing that sets my book apart from all the other tailgate books is that many of these athletes were gracious and generous enough to share recipes with me. You will find 165 recipes. Forty of the recipes were collected from professional athletes whom I know personally.

DF: In the book you’ll find delicious game day recipes, but some recipes are great for week nights or school nights. Some recipes have asterisks where I have made notes to make the foods healthier, but it won’t drastically change the recipe. Also, when I reached out to well-known athlete friends, I asked them what they would serve at their own football party to friends and family. The recipes they shared with me are in this book. The recipes are an interesting mix—cheesy, meaty and a few, like the recipe of LeBron James, are very healthy. (LeBron is the winner of two NBA championships, four NBA Most Valuable Player Awards, two NBA Finals MPV Awards, two Olympic gold medals, an NBA scoring title, and the NBA Rookie of the Year Award.) LeBron shared his recipe for Pregame HoneyLime Sriracha Salmon. In the headnotes of every recipe readers will learn the origin of the recipe. On game days I like to serve a recipe, usually a healthy recipe, for each team. These recipes are great, but if you serve them four days a week or more, you’ll have a weight problem!

VIP: Are there any new tailgate trends this season? DF: I’ve been reading about some interesting new stackable coolers that I found on Kickstarter that stack on top of each other. They are called STCKBLS. I have created a Hungry Fangating Bag for slow cooking. In essence it is a thermal bag that will keep foods cold or hot. You may also use it as a slow cooker, but the product does not come with a pot. The cost is $57.00. You may order this bag on hungryfan.com.

Note: The book contains planning menus, packing snacks and finding top stadium eats. VIP: Was your dream team of athletes including LeBron James, Boomer Esiason,

58 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | September 2017

Andre Agassi and Dikembe Mutombo eager to contribute their signature recipes and stories or were any of their recipes secret recipes not to be shared with the public? DF: Yes, they were very willing to share their story and recipe. I got Dikembe to cook with me on camera. You may see the video on U-tube on The Hungry Fan. VIP: The readers of our VIP City Magazines seem to like short, uncomplicated, yummy tailgate recipes. Give me an example of one such recipe. DF: I came up with a recipe called Blind Dates, which are delicious. The recipe has salty cheese, crunchy but crispy bacon, and they are moist and dumped in spiced dark chocolate. These dates may be served as an appetizer or a dessert.

Black Bean Salsa

Contributor: Mark Schlereth, Makes about 3 cups 1 (14-ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained 1 cup Homemade Salsa (see below) 1⁄4 cup chopped fresh cilantro Juice and zest of 1 lime Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Combine the black beans, salsa, cilantro, and lime juice, and zest ingredients in a bowl. Season with the salt and pepper, and stir well.

Pregame Honey-Lime Sriracha Salmon Contributor: LeBron James, Serves 2

1 cup quinoa 1 teaspoon coconut oil 2 cups coconut milk 1 teaspoon sea salt, plus more for seasoning 2 cups broccoli florets 2 to 3 tablespoons olive oil, as needed 1⁄2 teaspoon minced garlic Juice of 1⁄2 lime Freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons shredded coconut 1 side fresh salmon, skinned and filleted into 2 (8-ounce) pieces Garlic powder Lime wedges Honey-Lime Sriracha Sauce Juice of 3 limes 1 teaspoon chopped fresh cilantro 1 teaspoon honey 1 tablespoon Sriracha sauce 1 teaspoon olive oil Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

1. Rinse the quinoa with cold running water. Heat a saucepan over medium to medium-high. Add the coconut oil, and when it’s hot, add the quinoa and toast for 4 minutes, or until you get a nutty aroma. Pour in the coconut milk and 1 teaspoon salt, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, covered, for 20 minutes or until all the liquid is absorbed. Let it sit, covered, off the heat, for 10 minutes. Fluff with a fork. 2. Meanwhile, make the Honey-Lime Sriracha sauce: Whisk together all the ingredients in a small bowl, being sure to season with salt and pepper. 3. To cook the broccoli, bring a pot of water to a boil. Add the broccoli, and cook until tender, about 4 minutes. Drain and set aside. 4. Heat 1 tablespoon of the olive oil in a sauté pan over medium to medium-high. Add the garlic, and sauté for 1 minute. Add the cooked broccoli, lime juice, and salt and pepper to taste. Cook for about 3 minutes, careful not to burn the broccoli or garlic. 5. Transfer the broccoli and garlic mixture to a bowl, and add the shredded coconut to the pan. Stir frequently until the coconut flakes brown, about 1 minute. Remove from the heat. 6. Season both sides of the salmon with salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste. Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of the olive oil, and sear the salmon for about 2 minutes per side, until browned on the outsides and just cooked through. 7. To assemble, divide the quinoa between two plates. Top each with half the broccoli mixture and 1 piece of salmon. Drizzle the sauce over everything, and garnish with the toasted coconut. Serve with a lime wedge. Dressing in Blessing: SACER & SAVIVE By Liesel Schmidt Photography by Jacob Howe Photography Through the many shifts and changes experienced in fashion, tee shirts have held fast in the important role they play as an anchor piece and a closet essential. In every iteration from vee-neck to crew, tee shirts grace the bodies of everyone from Armani to the kids walking the halls of the local schools. And in their simplicity, they provide a powerful tool, offering the perfect blank canvas for art, self-expression, and even bold declarations. It was this blank canvas of the tee that became essential to Maria Charms Haycraft back in 2004, when she launched a line called Sacer and Savive, a company that provided her with a creative outlet when the challenges of life had taken her to a low point. But as one would learn from delving into the story behind such a unique name, her faith in Jesus gave her a mission—a sacred purpose—that soon took off to become a successful line of unique, edgy-looking tee shirts and accessories that she designed and created herself. “My mission in this is to clothe all with a sense of hope and love that connects you with a community of support to be confident enough to believe in your own passions and find your purpose and do what you love,” she explains. “Everyone is unique, and every idea is unique, and everyone’s dreams are unique. Uniqueness shouldn’t be hidden from the world—you should show it off, be proud of it, and love every minute of it,” Haycraft continues. “It’s a very vulnerable place to be in the world where we live today, to take a risk and put yourself out there and go after your dreams. Our clothing is that reminder and an encouragement to go out there and do what you love and be loved doing it!”

“That’s what I call the Sacer Experience—I stand there chatting with you while I make your shirt, and there’s a connection made! It’s when I get to encourage people and love on people and tell them about our mission. I get to tell people that this all began as an idea, and that God gave me this talent as a tool to glorify Him and help others. I know that He has changed my life in the most drastic way, and now I get to share that with the world through something I love doing.” And that love shines through in her many designs, as creativity constantly flows to keep her line fresh, fun, and truly unique. Upcoming for fall, Sacer and Savive will be debuting new football-themed pieces as well as a few that are…cheesy? “I’m super excited about some silly stencils I’ve made lately, like our cheesy pizza design,” Haycraft says. Obviously, people love her creativity, as the company’s success has led to the purchase and renovation of a second mobile boutique to supplement her first, giving her even greater reach in selling throughout the area. And greater sales means furthering her message, spreading love and encouragement to be confident in your worth and celebrate the beauty of your uniqueness. That’s a message that’s certainly a sacred one, and it’s one to wear with pride. For more information on Sacer and Savive, visit www.sacerandsavive.com or call (615) 275-8950.

First getting exposure at concert venues, Haycraft began selling her line on larger circuits before coming to set up shop in Clarksville, where she now works one-on-one with customers at local events and farmers’ markets in addition to selling online as well as in a local consignment shop. And while she creates each hand-stenciled piece, she makes the experience one that truly invites her customers into that process, taking the time to talk and share stories at the same time as she allows her clients to have a hand in the actual design. Let’s Go Peay! Story by Liesel Schmitt

Photography courtesy of Austin Peay State University As Austin Peay State University gears up for the 2017 football season, the Governors are looking forward to hitting the field with passion and power the likes of which may just propel them to a season they can put in the record books. And with the way that Coach Will Healy has improved his team over the past eighteen months that he’s held the position as head coach, the Govs are well on their way to making that goal a reality. Without having yet taken the field for the 2017 season, it might seem premature to make such an assessment; but those past eighteen months are laying the groundwork for a team that could well be one to watch. In fact, Austin Peay’s 2017 signing class of twenty-one players was named the Number 1 recruiting class in the FCS by 247Sports.com, proving without doubt that the Govs will be hitting the gridiron with grit and gristle enough to carry them to the top of their game. “We’re looking forward to great things out of our football team this season. We have a talented football team that has prepared and worked very hard to achieve success this year. Our goals, as long as I am fortunate enough to be the head coach here, will be to win the Sergeant York trophy, the Ohio Valley Conference title, and a national championship,” says Healy. “We have a very difficult schedule this year with out-of-conference games as well as a demanding conference slate, and it makes for a battle on a weekly basis. We’ll have to play very well to win football games with that schedule, but I’m definitely looking forward to guiding this team through those challenges,” Healy continues. “I really feel that we have made tremendous strides in the past eighteen months, and we have established a culture of doing things the right way, regardless of results. The talent on our roster has increased significantly, and we definitely have great young men in this program who continuously represent our university and our program in a great way,” Healy says. And while he could easily claim credit for the ways that the Govs have turned themselves around, he shares the glory with the rest of his team and the supportive individuals who surround him. “I am blessed to have a president in Dr. White and an athletic director in Ryan Ivey who have supported our program and our culture not only financially, but also vocally, and we will be successful here because it is all about the people and the student-athlete experience!” Going into their next season, the Govs will be giving it their all—and that’s passion worthy of any championship title.

“With my new hip and his new knee, it’s hard to keep up with us!” Ginny’s hip hurt so much, she thought she’d never walk without pain again. But that was before her hip replacement at Tennova. As Ginny said, “Now, I exercise and do yoga with no pain whatsoever. And after Ron went through the process with me, he was so impressed that he scheduled his knee replacement just a few weeks later.” Ron said, “I had my surgery and was walking the same day. We’ve already referred several friends. That tells you a lot!” For more information about our orthopedic care or to register for a free seminar on joint pain, visit Tennova.com.

4th Annual Summer Chow STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE

Clarksville’s Food Initiative hosted its 4th Annual Summer Chow event recently to celebrate the end of its 2017 summer youth program and chow down on a potluck dinner. “Summer Chow is a potluck dinner that allows us to celebrate our July Crew members and the work they have done,” Michael Hampton said. “This is the fourth time we’ve hosted this event. We invite crew members, their families and any community members who want to come out and join us.” “We’re proud of these students who have worked so hard the past four weeks in the garden and in the community. Tonight we recognize their successful completion of the program, and later they will have an opportunity to speak to the crowd about their experience and what it has meant to them.” Each year Food Initiative receives as many as 125 applications from high school students throughout Clarksville, Montgomery County and Fort Campbell. The program, which celebrates diversity, is also open to private-school and home-schooled students.

CLARKSVILLE AREA CHAMBER’S POWER BREAKFAST

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE

The Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a Power Breakfast with guest speaker Jimmy Blackmon, a former 101st Combat Leader. The event drew a huge crowd as Blackmon talked about leadership and some of the high-risk missions he has led around the world. Blackmon’s presentation, complete with visuals, was dynamic. The Air Mission Commander oversaw operations that netted #2 and #3 in the infamous Iraqi deck of cards. Four Medals of Honor were awarded to his soldiers for actions taken in Afghanistan while he served as Aviation Commander. Blackmon spoke on the challenges facing business leaders in the 21st century. He talked about leaders casting an organizational vision, shaping the culture, and creating a climate for success.

Screaming Celebration: Screaming Eagle Soldiers demonstrate fast rope insertion and extraction procedures and showcase the 101st Airborne Division’s (Air Assault) capabilities for hundreds of Soldiers and veterans to celebrate the division’s 75th anniversary and to pay tribute to a “Legacy of Heroism” at the Sabalauski Air Assault School, Fort Campbell, Ky., Aug. 25. (Photo By: Sgt. Marcus Floyd, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division)

As it celebrates its seventy-fifth anniversary, the 101st Airborne Division certainly has reason to stop and reflect on its many years of service to our nation. First activated on August 16, 1942, at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, the division experienced periods of inactivation and reactivation at various locations throughout the United States after World War II. But on September 21, 1956, the division was returned to active duty as the Army’s first Pentomic Division, taking post at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to serve in response to the perceived threat of tactical nuclear weapons. Since that time, the 101st has continued to set itself apart for its bravery, heroism, and dedication to maintaining the safety and freedom of our country, its many deployments a mark of that selfless courage in the face of danger. “No division is as storied or recognizable as the 101st Airborne Division,” says Lt. Col. Martin L. O’Donnell, public affairs officer for the 101st Airborne Division. “Deployed to nearly every conflict since its inception, its history is rich and proud because of the sacrifice and nobility of countless generations of warriors who have worn the ‘Old Abe’ eagle patch of our Screaming Eagles; and our ability as the world’s only air assault division to vertically envelop en masse our enemies and defeat them sets us apart.” The 101st could, indeed, pen its own history book, following the track of the many battles and conflicts that have occurred since it was first activated at the height of World War II, playing a significant role in D-Day as well as in the liberation of the Netherlands and during the Battle of the Bulge. Throughout the Civil Rights movement, during the Vietnam War, and heavily instrumental in military operations in the Middle East for more than two decades, the US could hardy have made the strides it has made in securing the Gulf, safeguarding safety all over the globe, and maintaining peace during so many times when so much of the world seemed upside down. With accomplishments such as these lining the pages of their history, the men and women of the 101st well deserve celebration of their seventy-five years, and that celebration is becoming quite the event, with a division run; Kentucky New Era vice president and general manager Sheryl Ellis’ induction as a Champion of Fort Campbell; a cake cutting; a Vietnam memorial rededication; a historical reenactment luncheon; and an air assault demonstration. “We want not only to celebrate the occasion, but also to express our gratitude to those from whom we draw our remarkable strength—the soldiers and their families, the veterans, and our community,” explains O’Donnell. “Their

collective depth of commitment is one of the reasons why, at seventyfive years young, this division remains so strong.” “In its seventy-five years, the Screaming Eagles has become one of the most honored and remembered Divisions in the Army,” adds Maj. Gen. Andrew Poppas, commanding general of the 101st. “The legacy of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) is formed by the sacrifice and nobility of generations of warriors; and the actions of the previous Screaming Eagles not only secured the 101st permanent places in history, but also laid the foundation for our next great mission.” “Our heroes have sacrificed their lives for America, for freedom, and for each other. This Division is comprised of premier warfighters, and their stories are stories of legends that will be told for years to come,” Command Sgt. Maj. Todd Sims, senior enlisted leader of the 101st, continues. “The men and women of this Division are actively writing the next chapter of our history.” Seventy-five years into that history, the Screaming Eagles have many pages yet to write—and with such valor and victory in those already written, the chapters ahead will surely be memorable.

Todd Sims (pictured left), present the Champion of Fort Campbell award to Sheryl Ellis, vice president and general manager for the Kentucky New Era, during an induction ceremony held at McAuliffe Hall, Fort Campbell, Ky., Aug. 16. STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE

The Belle Hollow was the site of the annual Cowboy Ball, a fundraiser that benefits the John Bartee Sr. Agricultural Center. This year’s ball featured great food, live music, and an exciting live auction for hundreds of guests who came out to show their support. Afterward, the Cowboy Committee issued a statement. “A big thankyou to all who attended Saturday’s Cowboy Ball. The food was delicious, the decorations were amazing, and the auction was fun and lively. But the best part was having you all there to show your support.” “Mr. Bartee’s dream would not be possible without every one of you who came to the Cowboy Ball. On behalf of the committee we thank you for your support, and we can’t wait to see you again next year.” John Bartee Sr. passed away July of 2013. He was Montgomery County’s UT Ag-Extension Director for more than 20 years. Bartee was instrumental in the completion of the Agricultural Center on Rossview Road, which is the site of many 4-H programs.

The Purple Tie Ball STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE

The Purple Tie Ball was moved to Burdoc Farms this year. Paul Latham is the organizer of the annual event which raises funds to end Alzheimer’s. “This is our 4th Annual Purple Tie Ball,” Latham said. “We do this benefit each year to support the Pennyrile Walk to End Alzheimer’s, and this year we’ve had such a great response. We’ve made some changes from previous years, to include a full dinner. We’ve moved to a new location and decreased the guest list a bit, so it’s a little more intimate. “I just want to thank everyone for such a wonderful turnout, and also Burdoc Farms for hosting this year. The facility is beautiful and everything looks great.”
