VIP EVENT | Operation That’s My Dress Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Organizers and supporters of the USO’s Operation That’s My Dress (OTMD) were in town for a fashion/entertainment experience recently. The program has been described as a premier military appreciation event for teens. The event provides new designer dresses for Prom, Homecoming, Holidays and other formal occasions, which are presented in a “fashion show” starring Miss USA contestants and professional models.

Gayle Gonzalez, Erin Walsh & Colleen Murphy

“OTMD was launched at Fort Campbell in 2012,” Ray Kennedy said. “We did this event at seven locations around the country last year and gave away more than 4,000 prom dresses to military teenage daughters, thus affecting over 30,000 families.” Kennedy says much is owed to OTMD’s benefactor, Sherri Hill. She is known as the queen of proms and has donated more than $8 million in dresses these last five years. This program has generated 25 million social media hits. OTMD now partners with JTV Jewelry television, and Paul Mitchell. Local sponsors have come on board too, like F & M Bank, and Visit Clarksville. “We have Miss USA contestants, MISS Tennessee, Miss, Miss North Dakota, Miss South Dakota and many others walking the runway. They will be working with the girls one-on-one to help them find the perfect dress and jewelry, but more importantly, we hope they will inspire them to be confident and to understand that beauty is within and without. We want these military teenage daughters to feel great about themselves.” Baylee Ogle, Delaney Rupp & Allison Tucker

VIP EVENT | Hoptown Summer Salute Festival Story + Photography by Kalan Alder The Hoptown Summer Salute Festival kicked off on Friday, August 18 in downtown Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The three-day festival is (WAS?) the official Eclipse Party in Hopkinsville. What better way to get people excited for the Solar Eclipse than with a festival? The festival offered live music, fun and games for the entire family. There was live music throughout the weekend including music from The Jimmy Church Band and American country music artist, Tracy Lawrence. The crowds were out and ready for a great weekend full of music. There were over 100 vendors with every type of deep fried food you could think of and Solar Eclipse t-shirts, magnets, etc. for all the shoppers to Houston Hanvy & Brenda Chapman take home. Locals and people from all over the world traveled to Hopkinsville this weekend (?) to share the Great Solar Eclipse. Fun activities like carnival rides, bouncers, and scuba diving were offered to make sure kids had an exciting time. Throughout the weekend there was a 5k race, Sunday morning service in Hopkinsville’s Founders Square, and much more throughout the weekend. Anyone who attended the festival could feel the positive energy from the various activities and food offered. Local businesses helped make the event a success, but also vendors from out-of-state traveled to Hopkinsville to set up food trucks or tents. Everyone pulled together to make The Summer Salute a weekend to remember. There truly was something for everyone to do during the weekend. CLARKSVILLE’S BEST BURGER SINCE 1965

WE MEAT AGAIN

BIGBURGER FRIEDBOLONGA V S

By Liesel Schmidt

Having opened in 1965, there’s certainly something nostalgic about Johnny’s Big Burger in the heart of downtown Clarksville, a hearty, down-to-earth, grab life by the buns appreciation for simple food and simple flavor that comes from the days of hard work when this place originally opened its doors. It’s a burger joint at its best; and when Johnny Meeks hand-formed his first patties of freshly-ground beef and slapped them on the flattop so many decades ago, he wasn’t just firing up the heat on a delicious burger— he was firing up a business that would create a legacy and become an iconic community hangout for years to come. “My uncle Johnny took something out of nothing and created a legacy here, and he opened this restaurant at a time when people took pride in their work and in what they produced. They worked hard for what they earned,” says current owner Justin Meeks, who took over the operations at Johnny’s in 2014. “This principle is still alive today in everything we do here, and we work hard so you can have the best.” Simplicity is a running theme here, but even in its simplicity, there is a complexity of the flavors that make everything on the menu so tempting. Freshly made burgers are featured on the menu, of course, but man cannot live by burger alone; and so Johnny’s also cooks up a few other equally tasty items that run closely behind the grind in their popularity. Among them are the fried bologna sandwich, a cheeseburger salad topped with hog bacon, and a grilled chicken sandwich—for those looking for something on the healthier side. Health-consciousness aside, for a sweet dish that’ll make your eyes roll back in your brain, the Buns and Cream truly gets the scoop on decadence, topping off a flat-top fried honey

bun with a heap of vanilla ice cream. Taken over the top by the slight hint of beef fat from the griddle, this dessert is one of Johnny’s claims to fame—and certainly something worth breaking your diet for. “We’ve loved being a part of this community,” Meeks says. And if the crowds that keep their tables busy and their flat-tops fired up are any indication, Johnny’s Big Burger gets big love right back.

Tennova Healthcare provides screening and diagnostic tools, including digital mammography and computer-aided detection.

Miss Lucille By Liesel Schmidt

Since opening in 2013, Miss Lucille’s Café has been a family affair, a true labor of love brought to bear by longtime Clarksville business owners Trent and Dana Knott and their two children, Luci and Chase. A gourmet, Southern-inspired restaurant wrapped in the warm embrace of Miss Lucille’s Marketplace on Madison Street, the café offers a wide variety of fresh, seasonally driven menu items that offer a peek into the culinary talents of their head chef as well as a taste of just what makes the South such a wonderful experience for food lovers. In keeping with their desire to keep the menu interesting and unique, Miss Lucille’s shakes thing up twice a year, bringing in new dishes that truly take advantage of locally sourced ingredients that bring the season alive on the plate. And with the harvest of fall at their fingertips, Miss Lucille’s offers a cornucopia of exciting options for their guests, rolling out entrees like the Quirky Turkey Panini, nestling juicy smoked turkey; house-made apple-cranberry chutney; Brie cheese; and orange-sage aioli between two slices of bread, pressed and melted to gooey goldencrusted perfection. Making a long-awaited return is the Fall Harvest Salad, a colorful

plate of crisp lettuce topped with fire-braised chicken, candied pecans, crisp apple slices, tart cranberries, and their signature apple cider vinaigrette. Looking for the perfect starter? Dip into the Tri-Star Trio appetizer, which features three house-made dips including traditional pimento cheese, roasted red pepper hummus, and smoky bean dip served with garlic parmesan pita chips. No matter the season, one thing remains unchanged at Miss Lucille’s, and that’s their dedication to providing quality food and a top-notch experience for each and every diner who takes a seat at their tables. “This is a labor of love for us, and we want our guests to feel as though they’re part of our family,” says café manager Jon-Michael St. Amant. “We strive to ensure that each guest has a one-of-a-kind experience during every single visit to Miss Lucille’s, and part of making that happen is a willingness to go the extra mile.” From their famous Picky Eunice Lettuce Wraps and Willie’s Brisket Sliders to their signature Grilled Cheese and Ruben sandwiches, Miss Lucille is one lovely lady you’ll want to have lunch with.

VIP EVENT | F&M Grand Mirror Unveiling Story + Photography by Lucas Ryan Chambers The F&M Bank in Downtown Clarksville, unveiled a new feature to their already beautiful Franklin Room. The Franklin Room is one of this city’s most beautiful venues for gatherings downtown and the history behind the location dates to the 1700’s. The Franklin House as it was named when the city was first founded, was one of the nicest hotels around and attracted visitors from all over the country. The mirror that stood in that very hotel was found intact, and restored to its former glory. The gilded mirror, with its very illustrious past now stands in the very location that it did hundreds of years ago for future generation to see. To get a chance to see it for yourself visit F&M Bank in Downtown Clarksville.

VIP EVENT | Hot Rods & Harleys Story + Photography by Tony Centonze The annual Hot Rods & Harleys event was held on August 26, 2017. “We did a reveal of the 2018 Harley Davidson motorcycles,” said Glen Appleton. “This has been one of the biggest product launches in he history of the company. We have an all new Softail line, and we’re out here with our customer, just having fun with the new bikes.” The car show filled the front lot of Appleton’s shop and motorcycles lined the side and back lots. Hundreds enjoyed refreshments and live music while admiring the impressive display and voting for their favorites. Appleton said his team was impressed with the turnout and variety at this year’s show. “People brought out antique cars and trucks, stock, and custom-built motorcycles,” said Appleton. “There are lots of Corvettes, Mustangs, rat rods and race cars. It’s a great chance for everyone to get together and enjoy the day.”

This event takes place every year. It is a warm-up for October’s Motorcycle Mayhem, the Buddy & Glen Appleton Memorial Poker Run. Appleton called attention to the upcoming Loretta Lynn’s Ride for Mission 22. This will be a music revival and gathering of Tennessee Motorcycles on Sunday, October 1.

VIP EVENT | Riverfest Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Kara Zahn, Event Planning Specialist for Clarksville Parks & Recreation, had the responsibility of hosting the annual Riverfest Art Experience, which kicks off Riverfest 2017. Art is one of the three components that make up the annual Clarksville event billed as an art, music and culture festival, now in its 30th year. The Art Experience has undergone some changes in recent years, but it is bigger and better than ever. About 200 people were in attendance to see the artwork and also the winners of this year’s 52-Hour Film Festival. Art has been a featured part of the festival for the last 20 years. The combined show at Wilma Rudolph Event Center on Thursday night makes for a nice prelude to the weekend of events along the riverfront. Cool temperatures and great music on two stages made Friday a success. By Saturday, thanks to perfect fall-like weather, Parks & Rec’s Robert Rayburn was feeling confident that this would be one of the busiest Riverfests of recent years.

Ceci Mendoza & Nerissa Aquino

Rayburn said that many people felt that based on its location in McGregor Park, growing the event would be difficult. “I think the success of this weekend shows that we can do more,” he said. “We want this event to keep growing and improving.” Changes were made, doing away with the old ticket system that had people standing in long lines. Vendors and festival-goers were very pleased with the easier, faster access to food and services. Guests and organizers were also pleased by the presence of the USS LST 325, which created a lot of excitement. Dozens of musical acts kept the crowds entertained throughout the weekend. Several genres of music were represented, and this year’s headliner Chris Janson delivered an electric performance to close the show Saturday night. Kids and parents were not disappointed with this year’s family zone either. The area was filled with games and activities including a rock wall, lots of inflatables, zombie hunting, princesses, and of course, face painting for the little ones.

STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

A

cross all cultures, food is a way to connect, a way to nurture the body and soul. But when you’re feeding those in need, that connection and nurturing penetrates far, far deeper and holds far more meaning than words can truly express. Countless times in the Bible did Jesus tell His disciples to feed His flock; countless times did He offer food to the hungry. And so in these modern times when a staggering number of people all over the world and even in our own communities here in America are so desperately in need of food, we are called on to step up and offer them the help, hope, and love they so greatly hunger for. It was this mission that was the driving force behind Kenny York’s vision to launch Manna Café Ministries in 2009, taking his love of cooking, his passionate love for people, and his servant’s heart to create the perfect recipe: a mobile soup kitchen that would go out into the community to offer hot meals to the hungry souls around him. A longtime lover of cooking, Kenny first used his kitchen skills to man the stove at a weekly soup kitchen in Nashville, Tennessee, where he served as a missionary for a number of years and eventually met his future wife, Vicki. As a fellow volunteer, Vicki’s own heart for the homeless naturally made them the perfect pair, and so the two married in 2008. Having the initial plans in hand to create their mobile mission, the couple went to a well-known homeless camp in Nashville armed with donated breads and sweets and eventually bringing hot meals—beginning what would ultimately become a non-profit organization that fed people far more than food. 44 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | October 2017

Manna hit full speed in 2010, when Kenny and Vicki were urged to move to Clarksville to fill a desperate need to reach the poor and homeless. Within three days of relocating, the Clarksville area was hit with a disastrous flood, and Manna’s mobile kitchen launched into disaster relief efforts to distribute food, feeding its very first hot meal to 35 guests whose hearts were nurtured with every single bite. In the years since, Manna’s food distribution has increased significantly, and the once weekly meals have turned into five per week. “For three years running, Manna has distributed more than 1.5 million pounds of food to 20,000 local residents,” says Vicki, whose years as a book and magazine editor have served her well in writing grant proposals for the organization. “It’s amazing to think about how quickly Manna Cafe has grown, thanks to our amazing staff and volunteers; and we’re constantly in awe of what God has done with and through this ministry. It’s certainly not easy; but it’s an adventure that we both love, and it’s also been one that’s challenged us to grow as individuals and as a couple,” she continues. “For us, the most rewarding thing about what we do is seeing people who are genuinely, desperately in need look down at a plate full of hot, healthy food—or at a box full of groceries they’ve been given—and watch as their eyes fill with hope. Over our years of doing this,

we have hugged so many people who are in tears because they suddenly feel encouraged; and it’s truly an honor to be part of something that impacts the community so deeply—not only by meeting the number one basic need of all human beings—food—but also in the work that we do by teaching these people how to cook healthy meals, offering them one-on-one prayer, and providing case work.” Clearly, Manna Café is more than just meals on wheels. “So many children and adults suffer from food insecurity, and for that reason, our goal is to first meet people’s basic need for food, and then guide them toward positive, permanent change,” says Vicki. “Our approach to accomplishing that has led to the development of programs that address many needs, and it’s been a blessing to see how impactful they’ve been,” she goes on. In addition to providing five hot meals at various satellite locations throughout Clarksville, Manna goes even further by providing grocery boxes three days a week to local residents as well as partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank to host one-day events throughout the to distribute groceries to hundreds

of families and individuals at various locations in Montgomery County. Through Operation Pomegranate, monthly training sessions focusing on making healthy food choices and teaching people how to prepare food are provided, and the food rescue program collects hundreds of thousands of pounds of surplus food from restaurants, grocery stores, and farmers’ markets that would otherwise be wasted and distributes them to those in need. But the need to feed their spirit is never far from mind, and so Manna’s mission offers Bible studies and provides devotionals. As Manna Café Ministries rolls along, they do more than satisfy starving bellies. They satisfy starving hearts—and they’re changing the community, one bite at a time.

VIP EVENT | Taste of the Pennyrile Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Kelly Martin and his team at Pennyroyal Hospice just hosted Taste of the Pennyrile at James E. Bruce Convention Center. “This is one of our annual fundraisers,” Martin said. “This is the 16th year of Taste of the Pennyrile. We have 31 food vendors here ranging from Panera Bread to Black Patch restaurant, Lake Barkley Resort, and several local pizza places. We even have a winery and a couple of distilleries here tonight.” Martin says the vendors are invited to attend for free. His team starts working on the lineup each year around January. Vendors bring samples of their bestselling items. Attendees purchase tickets for $15, then get to sample great food and beverages throughout the evening. “All the money goes to help patients at Pennyroyal Hospice who have fallen through the cracks in the system,” Martin said. “Maybe they don’t have insurance, medicare or medicaid, yet Karolyn Mack & Clarence Maxie their health issues don’t stop. “Without this and the other fundraisers we do, we would not be able to serve those folks. This event usually generates about $10,000 each year. We also do a raffle of several items that have been donated from the community. All of this is a tremendous help.”

SALUTE TO SERVICE | Welcome Home Veterans Celebration Story + Photography by Tony Centonze This year’s Welcome Home Veterans Celebration began at Appleton’s Harley Davidson where transporters of the American Veterans Traveling Wall met with an escort of soldiers, citizens and veterans on its way to Beachaven Vineyards & Winery. Sherry Pickering, Executive Director of the Montgomery County Veterans Coalition, partnered with Frances Manzitto and the folks from Visit Clarksville for a five-day celebration of veterans in our community. At the reception at Old Glory Distilling Co. Ken Burns’ new documentary “The Vietnam War” was shown. Afterwards, there was a panel discussion of the film featuring former POW Bill Robinson; Cindy Stonebraker, a board member from the POW/ MIA League of Families; TN VVA State council President Barry Barbara Alvarez, Sherry Pickering & Deanna McLaughlin Rice’ and Ernesto Rodrigues, a veteran who walked 2,200 miles to raise awareness for the 22 veterans lost each day to suicide. “One of the things that drew me to partner with Visit Clarksville is the importance of these Vietnam veterans being able to look around at these venues this week and see lots of people,” Pickering said. “That will let them know that they will always be remembered.” The procession, which featured dozens of motorcycle riders representing local veterans biker groups and members of a local Corvette club, led the way to Beachaven Winery. The Eyes of Freedom 911 Exhibit, the American Veterans Traveling Tribute Wall, and the Field of Honor, a display of 500 American flags purchased in remembrance or in honor of a soldier, were on display there for five days. With boots on the ground for national and global crisis of all kinds, it stands to reason that those boots would be willing to march through the muck, to wade through the water and battle against the ravages of a war raged by nature. And as Hurricane Irma cast her sights on launching a full-blown assault on Florida, Ft. Campbell’s own 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) had their boots at the ready to assist in any way they could, deploying more than 35 aircraft, 40 vehicles and 370 personnel to various locations in the affected area. “There is no nobler task, no more profound depth of commitment and no selfless service greater than people helping people, and Americans helping Americans,” says Maj. Gen. Andrew Poppas, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) commander. Fortunately, the brigade was not needed, and so they returned to base on September 14th and 15th. It was a readiness exercise of the highest order, proving once again the bravery of the 101st to meet any challenge head on. “For the last 75 years, the division has responded to threats near and far,” says Lt. Col. Martin L. O’Donnell, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) spokesperson. “The ability of the soldiers within the task force to rapidly deploy, stage, and be prepared to move out at a moment’s notice speaks volumes to the readiness and capabilities of this unit and the division,” notes Lt. Col. Ryan P. Boyle, the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade aviation task force commander based at Mobile Regional Airport. “The coordination that took place between our higher headquarters and the various agencies involved—as well as the support we received from the Mobile Police and Fire Departments 52 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | October 2017

]

and Regional Airport Authorities—made this process extremely easy, allowing our Soldiers to focus on the mission at hand.” “Although we were not officially called upon to assist with Hurricane Irma relief efforts, from the time that we were alerted of the mission to the time that we landed at Patrick Air Force Base was only a matter of a few days, and our MEDEVAC Blackhawks and crews were fully mission capable within 16 hours,” adds Lt. Col. James R. Yastrzemsky, the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade task force commander based at Patrick Air Force Base. “Our rapid response time from flash to bang goes to show the level of readiness, sense of urgency, and commitment from our soldiers and what they are able to accomplish in a very short amount of time. “We learned that we can rise to any challenge to get the job done, and when we received the call to prepare for our next rendezvous with destiny, we were ready,” Yastrzemsky goes on. “At the end of the day, the mission was to support our fellow Americans in their time of need.” And while those troops might not have been called to task for Irma, mere weeks later, the 101st once again rose to provide relief, this time deploying to Puerto Rico as part of the Defense Support of Civil Authorities mission organized by the Defense Department in the wake of Hurricane Maria. Under the name Team Medevac, more than 70 personnel and eight HH-60 medevac Blackhawk helicopters from the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st ABN DIV (AASLT) were transported to José Aponte de la Torre Airport in Ceiba, a coastal municipality on the northeast section of the island. “We have been called forward and will provide a unique capability with our medevac helicopters,” says Team Medevac commander

S A L U T E TO S E R V I C E

Maj. Kurtis P. Evick. “We will [be able to] help save lives and mitigate suffering, and we will continue to serve the American people of Puerto Rico until we are no longer needed.” “What’s happened in Puerto Rico is nothing short of a tragedy, but I’m honored to support this relief effort and to help the citizens of our nation,” adds 1st. Sgt. Jason C. Straub, senior enlisted leader of Team Medevac. “Our soldiers [have been] trained, our aircraft are prepped, and we’re ready to go.” Readiness is always top of mind for the 101st; and while Irma was indeed a test-run of that readiness in the unique conditions of a national disaster, the cruelty of Hurricane Maria’s wrath has been such that these ever-ready and ever-willing soldiers have been called to the field to engage in this particular battle. “The 101st Airborne Division has responded to numerous civil emergencies, but this is the first time we have supported commonwealth and federal officials to provide hurricane relief,” notes O’Donnell. “Our soldiers continue to stand ready and proudly by our division’s slogan: ‘When you want it done—call the 101!’” offers Yastrzemsky. Time and again, they firmly reflect that motto. And time and again, we marvel at their bravery.

We can rise to any challenge to get the job done. -Lt. Col. James R. Yastrzemsky

VIP EVENT | Operation Stand Down Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Operation Stand Down Tennessee CEO John Krenson was in the Clarksville office recently for a meeting with his team over coffee and doughnuts. Operation Stand Down began in Nashville in 1993 as a oncea-year event, a resource fair for veterans. At that time, great focus was placed on helping homeless veterans get off the street. Veterans comprised 16 – 35 % of America’s homeless population. “That particular problem has improved a lot,” Krenson said. “Currently, there are 100,000 veterans in middle Tennessee, 500,000 across the state, and on average, 300 – 400 active duty soldiers separate from Fort Campbell every month. About 1/3 of them stay in the area.”

Frank Ketcham, Sandra Gresham, Evelyn Adams & Theresa Carter

Krenson says that problems exist across the board, whether the veterans are single or married, recently transitioned or long-time separated, and their needs are different. “Some need help accessing benefits,” Krenson said. “Others need help understanding what is available to them from the Veterans Administration. We’ve had veterans who suffer from PTSD suffer triggering events long after they are separated from the military. Others come home from more recent deployments and need access to mental health services immediately. We can help with all these things.”

John Krenson & Willie Celestine

The program offers help in five major areas, Transition, Benefits, Housing, Education and Employment. There are a host of other wrap around services as well. OSD assists with access to a financial coach, or pro bono legal services. The program even offers assistance with debt resolution. “We are a one-stop-shop concierge,” Krenson said “We work with a lot of partners, and can help our veterans in a variety of ways. RYAN CHAMBERS STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

What I love most is that photography is one of the only art forms that incorporates travel, journalism, art, and adventure. Every picture I take represents a moment in time that captures exactly what I was doing and seeing, right at that very place, at that very second. It’s become such a personal experience that it’s hard for me to detach from my work... They’re not just pieces or photos—they’re memories and glimpses into the past.

As with most naturally gifted artists, for 33 year-old photographer Lucas Ryan Chambers, the world around him is an unending source of inspiration; and that inspiration has become a fully developed passion and a promising career. A camera-buff since childhood, Chambers only began his professional career in photography two years ago, but his talent undeniable set him on-course for the journey of a lifetime. “I’ve been carrying a camera around with me since I was young,” Chambers says, “and it’s something that really became a passion for me after I spent a few days one summer taking shots of the Perseid Meteor Shower.” Shooting for the stars, the Austin Peay State University student put together his portfolio of work and formulated a plan for a project that would put his creativity, his talent, his sense of adventure, and his love of the celestial realm to work. And after presenting a grant proposal to the grant committee at APSU, he was given funding for a weeklong trip to the Sedona Desert in Arizona to study astrophotography and portraiture. Thusly armed with camera at the ready, Chambers put his vintage VW in gear to set off for the desert. “That weeklong trip turned into 18 days and 7100 miles!” he laughs. “I drove along old Route 66, passed through nine states, hiked up mountains, and lived in my old Volkswagen the entire time. It was hot—really hot—but I saw some of the most amazing things that the southwest has to offer. Even though most days consisted of eating beef stew over a campfire and bathing in the nearest stream, I would do it all again in a heartbeat.” The resulting series of photos were showcased during a one-night artist’s exhibit at Journey’s Eye Studio in Clarksville, during which Chambers was given the opportunity to share his work as well as a few stories offering a “behind the scenes” look about his memorable trip. “What I love most is that photography is one of the only art forms that incorporates travel, journalism, art, and adventure. Every picture I take represents a moment in time that captures exactly what I was doing and seeing, right at that very place, at that very second. It’s become such a personal experience that it’s hard for me to detach from my work,” Chambers explains. “They’re not just pieces or photos—they’re a memories and glimpses into the past.” As he works to complete his Bachelors degree in Fine Art, Chambers will indeed be able to look back at that time in the desert as much more than photographs. They are traceable memories of his journey in bringing a passion to life in ways that few ever do—and that’s worth more than even the highest GPA one could ever achieve.

VIP EVENT | Red Cross Tennessee River Chapter Heroes Luncheon Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Joe and Cynthia Pitts recently chaired the Red Cross Tennessee River Chapter Heroes Luncheon, an annual event that recognizes those who support the Red Cross mission in our community. Katy Hagstrom is Executive Director of the local chapter which encompasses 12 middle Tennessee counties. The annual Heroes Luncheon celebrated humanitarian leadership in Clarksville and recognized Pastor Jimmy Terry as the Humanitarian of the Year. Dave Sanderson, a survivor and hero of the Miracle on the Hudson, was the keynote speaker . Sanderson captivated the crowd as he retold the story of US Airways Flight 1549 and Pilot Chesley Sullenberger’s improbable January 15, 2009 landing on the Hudson River that resulted in the survival of all 155 people aboard. He also repeatedly lauded the good people of the Red Cross for the support they gave him and his family throughout that ordeal. Hagstrom said the purpose of the luncheon is to recognize the individuals and corporate sponsors who give to the Red Cross, whether time or treasure, as the real heroes who help them meet their mission in this community and beyond. “Pastor Terry was a huge humanitarian in this community,” Hagstrom said. His widow, Servella, and son, Jimmy Terry Jr. accepted an award on his behalf. To donate to the American Red Cross, call 1-800-Red-Cross, go to www.redcross.org or text Red Cross to 90999. Hagstrom invites anyone who is interested in the work of the Red Cross to visit their office and discuss volunteering or make a donation in person.

BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

School activities, work activities, sports activities, social activities…you name it, it’s there, demanding time and focus and making you wish you could divide atoms to be all places all at once. And whether you’re a parent or a kid, that feeling of having too many things to do within the space of a week is shared by pretty much everyone, and one of the things that’s been sacrificed at the almighty altar of the tight schedule has been sitting down at the table to share a meal and talk. Cell phones down, mobile devices dark. Talk. Chew. Pass the plates and look at one another in the eyes. Have face time face-to-face. It’s a sad fact, but it’s definitely true. And the effect it has on so many things, from our family relationships to our kids’ performance in school even to our waistlines is indicative of the ways that the lack of family meals is having a negative impact. Fortunately, you don’t have to cook elaborate meals to make dinnertime worthy of gathering around the table. They can be simple and fun—and if you’ve got young kids, use that simplicity to your advantage and turn cooking time into teachable moments that build your relationships and create memories. Think about it…even if you don’t have recipe cards or cookbooks passed down from your own mother, chances are, you’ve got a few memories of doing something in the kitchen with those little hands of your child-sized self. Whether you were helping mix muffin batter and licking spoons or just rolling out balls of cookie dough, those kitchencentered moments are something that is indelibly inked on your sensory brain, easily accessed whenever you catch the whiff of a freshly baked treat. And now that become an adult with children of your own, you’ve got the chance to make memories of that your kids will take into their adulthood and treasure forever— even if there are a few recipe flub-ups along the way.

Make things even more kid-friendly with kid-sized kitchen tools and products made just for little chefs. Check out a few ideas in our Add to Cart section and get your little one at set up for some fun! October 2017 | www.vipclarksville.com • 69
