VIP EVENT | CMCSS Vision to Reality Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Clarksville-Montgomery County Education Foundation (CMCEF) recently held its annual fundraiser, Vision to Reality, an event that raises considerable funds which benefit the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System. Abby Binkley, Executive Director of the CMCEF, talked about what the program does and how much they hope to raise at this year’s event. “We are here to raise about $40,000 that will benefit all of the initiatives and programs we support in conjunction with CMCSS,” Binkley said. The Foundation’s tagline is “We begin where tax dollars end.” Programs and initiatives that the Foundation supports include Great Idea Teacher Grants, STEM Initiatives, CMC Teacher Ware-house, Academic Awards, Career Academies, Student Scholarships, Leadership CMCSS and much more. “Our theme this year is Future Ready” because, that’s what we are doing,” said Binkley. “We are making our students ready for the future. We don’t know exactly what the future Cindy Chambers & Judge Charles Smith holds, but we do know that these students are the future of Clarksville and Montgomery County. Everything we can do now to support them is going to improve this community as a whole.” About 300 guests filled the Wilma Rudolph Event Center. They enjoyed bidding on dozens of items in the silent auction, which was followed by dinner, and then a live auction featuring eight very special items. “We have some great items on tonight’s auction block,” Binkley said. “We are also excited to have The Beagles playing for us. We really appreciate the community coming out and supporting us, and we always try to make this a fun time for everyone so that they’ll want to come back and do it again next year.”

VIP EVENT | Small Shop Saturday Story + Photography by Lucas Ryan Chambers Shop Small Saturday is one of the biggest shopping days of the year, and this year was no exception. Thousands of people shopped local in Downtown Clarksville this year where small businesses were having some of the best deals of the season. Shopping local is one of the best ways to support the local businesses in town and it’s where you may get the perfect gift for your loved ones. Places such as Yada Yada Deli, Edwards Steakhouse, Journey’s Eye Studio, Couture Crush and Mildred and Mable had locally made goods on hand so that you could take home a one-of-a-kind gift. There were even locally owned restaurants like The Blackhorse Pub and Roux, Americajun where you could take a break, grab a bite to eat and get a gift card to give to that special someone this holiday season. There’s still plenty of time left this holiday season to do your shopping, and you will surely find the perfect gift at one of Clarksville’s locally owned-stores.

VIP EVENT | Pass the Turkey Story + Photography by Tony Centonze More than 500 runners showed up bright and early at Governor’s Square Mall Thanksgiving Day to take part in the 8th Annual Pass the Turkey 5K Walk/Run. Members of Clarksville Running Club help organize the event each year which for the last five years has benefited Manna Cafe Ministries. Participants donated food, winter clothing, and more than $3,500 to the local organization that provides support to many of Clarksville’s homeless and financially challenged citizens.
Cat Babin, Tom Carrick & Mari Dawn Randall Kim & Samantha Thompson
Pass the Turkey is not a competitive event. Runners and walkers of all skill levels were just there to have fun and support a good cause. Many of the runners dressed like turkeys or wore turkey hats. One runner wore only running shorts, running shoes, a stocking cap and gloves, which was a bold statement on a morning when the temperature was in the 20s. Lots of participants brought their dogs out to enjoy the event. Just before the start of the race, a woman dressed in a turkey costume took off. She was the “turkey” to pass at this year’s run.

Kenny York is the founder of Manna Cafe. He expressed his thanks to all of the runners as well as Matt Heiser and CRC for their continued support. “It’s an awesome day that we look forward to each year, “York said. “This event just seems to get bigger and bigger.”

I WANT TO RIDE MY BICYCLE By Liesel Schmidt | Photography courtesy of Clarksville Parks & Recreation
W
ith so much time spent behind a desk during our working hours, bookended by commutes to and from our jobs with the interspersed jaunts here and there to the store, our legs don’t get nearly enough use—not that we don’t have every intention of putting them to work. But we have busy lives that sometimes seem to get in the way of our best intentions of getting out and being active, and then there’s the convenience factor. Even one of the simplest forms of exercise— biking—can be an exercise of patience in and of itself, as getting the bike somewhere to hit a bike path isn’t always a straightforward question of rolling it out. Adding to the headache of transporting a bike on the back of the car is the maintenance of keeping gears and chains in shape, making sure the tires are inflated, and the cost of any repairs that need to be made, and that “simple” bike ends up becoming far less simple than you initially thought.
Supervisor Michelle Austin. “The on-board BCycle trip computer allows members to track all the miles they ride, the calories they burn, and the carbon emissions they avoid, so it’s really ideal for people who are trying to reach fitness goals or simply want to be more mindful of the environment.”
Fortunately, actual bike ownership isn’t the only option. Drawing on the inspiration of so many larger cities across the country who now have bike share programs of their own, the Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department recently implemented the city-wide BCycle bike share program, giving members the perfect way to take even just an hour here or there to let the car sit idle while they put their feet into motion on the pedals of a bike.
Convenience is a tenet of the program as kiosks may be located through the use of an app or on the website, and each bicycle is regularly inspected and maintained to ensure the safest ride. Bikes are also equipped with baskets to provide for easy transport of goods as well as front and rear lights to guarantee that visibility is high no matter the hour. For those who need nothing more than a day-pass, credit card purchases may be made at BCycle kiosks, though affordable monthly and annual membership options definitely make becoming a regular BCycle pedal pusher a route worth taking.
“Our BCycle program is a great way to navigate the downtown area; and we’re offering it not only as an alternative method of transportation the way the national Bcycle platform does, but also trying to encourage it as a healthy recreational experience,” says Clarksville Parks and Recreation Administrative Support

Differing from traditional bike rentals that provide longer-term usage requiring pre-booking and reservations, Clarksville’s Bcycle program offers a membership that allows for unlimited use for trips up to one hour. Once a 60-minute trip has been exceeded on one bike, a $1 fee is incurred for each additional 30 minutes. For quick trips around town or even a one-hour bike ride through the park, however, BCycle is the perfect solution, with docks located at various points all over town that make picking up or dropping off bikes quick and convenient.

She was also assisted by Santa and Mrs. Claus and one of Santa’s helpers from his North Pole workshop. The Rossview High School Choir performed Christmas songs on a chilly evening for an audience that filled the seating area. Acro Dance Express, and CAST & Crowns Performing Arts Studio performed some original dance pieces.

VIP EVENT | FCSC Golf Classic Story + Photography by Tony Centonze The Fort Campbell Spouses Club recently hosted its first FCSC Golf Classic at Cole Park, all part of its ongoing effort to fund scholarships in the community. Hannah Husemann and Kassie Peterson were co-chairs of the tournament, which had 84 golfers in a 4-man scramble format teeing off at an 8 a.m. shotgun start. “This was our first time hosting a golf tournament,” Husemann said. “In the past we held a crafts fair called Candy Cane Lane, but it wasn’t benefiting the club as we wanted so we thought we would try something new this year.”
Colleen Murphy, Kassie Peterson, Hannah Husemann & Erin Walsh
“We’ve had a lot of great feedback from the players so far in spite of the chilly weather, and thanks to our sponsors, they are out there playing for some great prizes.” Sisk Auto Mall was the primary sponsor of the tournament, with a hole-in-one contest that could have resulted in a lucky golfer winning his choice of a Nissan Rogue, a Honda Accord, or a Jeep Wrangler. Other par-3 holes offered great prize opportunities as well. Items like round trip airfare, a set of Calloway irons, or an HD flat screen television were possible prizes. Anyone interested in supporting the FCSC scholarship fund may find more information at their website: www.FortCampbellSpousesClub.com. Donations are always welcome.

Mouse Clicks on a mission By Liesel Schmidt Being in the military can sometimes test the mettle of even the strongest individuals, but when you feel supported, the challenges that you face can seem more conquerable. You go into battle as a unit, never on your own—and while the home front may not present nearly the same degree of difficulties, it can often feel as though you’re on a solo mission unless you know who, exactly, will be your ally when you need one. Helping you find those allies is the very mission behind the newly launching website bizvets.biz, which acts much like the well-known Angie’s List and HomeAdvisor sites. Connecting everyone from small businesses and service providers to military advocacy organizations, bizvets.biz is a one-stop site that puts countless resources at your fingertips, literally within a few clicks of a mouse. It even serves to create an online community of other service members so that you may be more aware of fellow vets who might live nearby in your area. The focus is a local one, of course, so that you can tap into everything available in your area and take advantage of military discounts, special pricing events, and specialized services targeting members of the military community. It’s an amazing resource for the men and women of the armed forces and their families, but it’s also a great boon to local businesses and an ideal way to encourage new clients to learn more about their offerings.

“Currently, there is no prevalent service that allows customers to search out and connect with local veteranfriendly or veteran-owned businesses; and our research has identified a huge untapped market of veterans, active duty military, and their families who would all very much appreciate the opportunity to deal with veteran-friendly businesses,” says Tim Shank, co-creator of bizvets.biz. A service-minded individual himself, Shank has had many years of working on a one-on-one basis with countless members of the military when they come to him seeking out insurance. And while he may play the lead role in his Clarksville-based office for Shelter Insurance Group, Shank was more than willing to team up with website wizard Don Wood after the pair had a conversation with Sherri Pickering during which the Director of Montgomery County Veterans Coalition shone a spotlight on the unmet demand for such a service-minded service site. With his years in web analytics and design as the owner of Next Century Consulting, Wood’s proficiency in all things web-based made him an ideal partner; and over the next months, Shank and Wood invested both time and personal finances to research, refine, and launch the website that would ultimately become bizvets.biz. “We knew it was crucial to do it right and to make it simple so that it would be reliable and user-friendly, so we really took everything into account in getting it to work across all operating platforms and on all devices,” Wood explains.
More than simply a business-minded move, the desire to create the website was also personally driven, as Shank’s son is a Marine, while Wood’s father served in the Army Aircorp. “We saw a real need, and we felt a burden to meet that need. This is a great way to serve those who serve us so selflessly, and that’s a true honor,” Shank says. The concept itself is a simple one. Users simply sign up—free of charge—and navigate the site to search by business name, category, or use the BizVet EZ Finder to search by keyword. Businesses, service providers, and organizations with listings on the site may then connect directly with their potential clients and provide them with the solutions they need; and that connection is unique in that it caters specifically to the military community. “Our users are simply consumers who need a service or are wishing to make a purchase, yet they do not know what service organizations are available to meet their need or which veteran-friendly business is available locally to sell them the product or service—often with military discounts,” Wood says. “None of the existing online databases focus specifically on veterans and active-duty military to promote local options; so what our site offers is certainly unique in that respect.” So, too, is their desire to give back. “We see this as a unique opportunity to do something important for these individuals. Therefor a portion of the proceeds from the vendors and business members signed up on the site is being donated to support the Veterans’ Coalition, which provides valuable services to the military community. It’s a fitting way for us to operate,” says Shank. “At the end of the day, this is a service honoring those who have served our country, and we want to do that in every way possible.” One simple click, and the reinforcements are called in to make life at home a little less complicated of a mission. And as this website grows in its reach, it shows great potential to connect greater networks of users to one another in communities all across the country as they navigate the challenges to find everything they need when they need it the most.
“We saw a real need, and felt a Burden to meet that need. This is a great way to serve those who serve us so selflessly, and that’s a true honor.” -Tim Shank

Both teams, their coaching staffs and fans were greeted at the Shaw Center entry by 101st soldiers in full tactical gear. They were also allowed to check out some of the highspeed combat vehicles used by the 101st. VIP EVENT | Swine, Shine, & Stay Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Lake Barkley Lodge recently hosted the second in its Beef & Bourbon series, this time with a twist. Shine and Swine featured two of Kentucky’s most popular exports-- world-class pork and fine moonshine from Casey Jones Distillery. Sallee Wilson is part of a team at Lake Barkley State Resort Park that lately has been mixing it up with some fresh ideas. Shine and Swine was the natural follow-up to the very successful Beef & Bourbon dinner, which 200 guests enjoyed. A chef prepared a delicious menu, and a selection of Maker’s Mark products was offered to guests. When Wilson’s team approached Casey Jones Distillery with the idea, proprietors Peg Hays and Arlon Casey Jones didn’t hesitate to set the plan in motion. “It has been great to work with Peg and Arlon at Casey Jones Distillery,” Wilson said. “Peg even sent some barrels and antique jugs to help us decorate for this evening. And the menu items are totally infused with flavors from their products.” Chef Steve Connell put together the multi-course menu for the evening. Diners began with a cocktail hour at which they could sample a variety of the distillery’s offerings. Then they sat down to a dinner that opened with a Kentucky Bibb lettuce and Brie salad.
Heather Collins, Virginia Gray & Katie Leavell
The second course was a bacon-wrapped smoked pork loin with an apple moonshine infused au jus. It was served with au gratin potatoes with Havarti cheese and seasonal grilled vegetables. For dessert, guests enjoyed a white chocolate bread pudding topped with a Casey Jones Barrel Cut Moonshine sauce. “We love teaming up with these local businesses,” Wilson said. “So far these partnerships have been a big success. We hope to continue doing special events like this at least twice a year.” For more information about upcoming events at Lake Barkley State Resort Park, call (270) 924-1131. The Good Life
GAYLORD OPRYLAND Resort Story by Lyda Kay Ferree, The Southern Lifestyles Lady | Photography courtesy of Gaylord Opryland Resort 66 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Holiday Issue
C
rews at Gaylord Opryland Resort worked hard to bring the magic of the North Pole to Music City as they prepared to open the hotel’s 34th annual A Country Christmas celebration, which began on November 10.
Santa’s favorite lady will make an appearance again this year in Cookies with Mrs. Claus. Cozy up by the fire and delight in some milk and cookies while Mrs. Claus reads an enchanting Christmas tale.
This year, the resort hung more lights than ever, bringing the total to more than 3 million Christmas lights. Teams worked several hours each day since July to make sure the holiday lights were up for A Country Christmas, presented by FUJIFILM INSTAX, taking place November 10 through January 1.
No need to endure the cold for a lovely yuletide glide! Gaylord Opryland takes it up a notch this year with a 6,000-squarefoot indoor ice rink in the spectacular Holiday Hall. While there, guests may also hop aboard the Opryland Express kids’ train, stop by the Gingerbread Decorating Corner, presented by Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas, or take a whirl on the Santa’s Spinners tea cup ride!
“The holiday magic this resort creates every year is astounding, and we cannot wait for visitors to enjoy the newest holiday decorations and entertainment at our 2,888-room resort and its nine acres of indoor gardens,” said Gaylord Opryland General Manager John Adams. “The many months of preparation are well worth it when we see families making holiday memories with us.” The resort’s signature holiday attractions—ICE!, presented by Pepsi, returns with A Charlie Brown Christmas by Charles Schulz. The beloved holiday story will come to life in 2 million pounds of colorful, larger-than-life ice sculptures. Kept at nine degrees Fahrenheit, the exhibit is hand-carved by 40 master artisans from Harbin, China, who use their artistry to create favorite scenes with Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy and friends, plus multi-story ice slides. If you can’t get enough of the Peanuts gang, enjoy an interactive breakfast you and your family won’t soon forget at Breakfast with Charlie Brown & Friends. Cirque Dreams Holidaze lights up Nashville for the first time, November 18 through December 27 at the Grand Ole Opry House featuring never-before-seen performances, over 300 costumes, 20 of the world’s best acts, original music and seasonal favorites in a multi-million-dollar stage wonderland. Hailed by “The New York Daily News” as “a delicious confection of charm, sparkle and talent by the sleigh load,” don’t miss this must-see Broadway musical, new cirque adventure and family show wrapped in one Broadway World declares “the perfect holiday gift.” Diamond Rio’s Holidays & Hits Dinner Show will bring lighterthan-air harmonies to Gaylord Opryland, November 17 through December 25. The Grammy Award-winning six-man group has sold more than 10 million albums, earning three platinum and five gold records. With their hit, “Meet in the Middle,” they became the first group in the history of country music to have a debut single reach No. 1. The band was awarded Opry membership in 1998 and has received Top Vocal Group honors six times from the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. The Build-A-Bear Workshop experience lets guests make their very own furry winter friend-a-cuddly, cute polar bear plush, designed exclusively for Gaylord Hotels that can be personalized with cozy winter clothing and accessories. For even more fun, families may work together to solve the Build-A-Bear Workshop Scavenger Hunt to gain a “beary” special prize.
For heart-pounding thrills, guests may head outdoors and brave the hills of the resort’s extreme snow tubing hill covered in 1.5 million pounds of real snow or enjoy a carnival style game to test guests’ aim at Santa’s Snow Throw. Of course, A Country Christmas wouldn’t be the same without a visit from Santa, who will be stopping by to give guests an opportunity to have a treasured Christmas photograph taken— whether they have been naughty or nice. Holiday festivities also include carriage rides and holiday cruises on the General Jackson Showboat along with free activities—the Brightest Star Fountain Show and the Outdoor Nativity with an audio rendition of the Biblical story.

They help match people who need bone marrow transplants with donors.” “People may register at the event. They will do a DNA cheek swab Vinnie Jones, Sabine & Ron Miller and then that information will be entered into a national registry. Hopefully, someone registering at the event will be a match for someone currently in need of a donor.” Two transplant recipients were at this year’s 5K: Mark Wright and Alan Edmundson, who drove from Ohio to attend the event. The evening was split into two events: the 1-mile walk/fun run and then the Full Moon 5K. Meeks and her team worked to get everyone registered and ready to race. “We are proud to be supporting this cause,” Meeks said. “There are more than 100,000 people in the United States who are on the registry and actively waiting for a donor match right now.”
