hough it may sound cliché to say, it really is true—the year has absolutely flown by. It seems like just yesterday we started working on the premier issue of VIP Clarksville Magazine, and now we’re wrapping up our first full year. It’s absolutely amazing to me how fast the time has gone, and I can’t begin to express my gratitude to all of our readers who have so faithfully followed us in our journey so far. With 2017 just around the corner, we look forward to another year full of new adventures, and we can’t wait to make even more memories with you. This past year has certainly been an eventful one, bringing all kinds of surprises and so many newsworthy events. We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve celebrated, and we’ve grieved—and all of those things bear great reminder of the many things we have to be grateful for and cherish. Looking forward to 2017 is a great time to think about the ways we can impact the community around us. Even the smallest things can make a big difference, from financial support of charities dear to our heart to the purchases we make at local small businesses. In places suffering from recent disasters like Gatlinburg, those signs of support can help them rebuild after tragedy. We’ve all watched in amazement at the outpouring of supplies being donated to that area but the need is still there for support in other ways—donations to the Red Cross to help relief efforts and making it a point to visit our favorite places in the Great Smoky Mountains are just a few ways we can support this community devastated by the recent wildfires. Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and the surrounding areas are full of great shops, restaurants, and businesses that need your continuing patronage; and as they revitalize themselves, that’s one of the greatest gifts we can give. In this holiday season of celebration and giving, we want to share a few things with you that will help your festivities be a little more merry and a little less stressful. Check out our great holiday gift guide full of ideas for unique little treasures to put under the tree. And if you’re planning a holiday party, we’ve got some helpful hints to make your gatherings sparkle and a few suggestions to keep your sleigh running smooth. From Christmas to New Year’s, we’ve resolved to help you celebrate the end of one year and ring in a new one, and we know you’ll love our feature on lucky bites for good fortune in the months ahead. As the days creep closer to Christmas and New Year’s, let us take time to reflect on the blessings we have in our own life. Those are the things to treasure, the things worth more than anything money can buy. Resolve to show the people we love how very much they mean to us, each and every day—that’s a gift they can hang on to forever, and it’s definitely one that will always fit just right. Wishing each of you a very Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Ashley Mynatt Watson VIP Clarksville Magazine is free to pick up at any of our numerous distribution locations. We’ll be on racks at many local restaurants, bookstores, hotels, banks, salons, boutiques — and the list is growing! Ho! Ho! Hosting! S TO R Y B Y L I E S E L S C H M I DT

Holiday entertaining can be a daunting task; and unless you have endless hours of time to prep and plan for the descent of family and friends, you may feel as though you’ll never be able to pull off the holiday gathering that so merrily springs to mind when you envision a card-worthy Christmas. But just because you fall short of being Martha Stewart doesn’t mean your efforts don’t count—this is a season of love and joy, so learn to love and take joy in the simple fact that the people you adore (and a few that you don’t) are going to be near and that you’ll have time to spend creating memories together—even if they include a few imperfections here and there. After all, you never know what may start a new tradition—whether you have to make a last-minute switchup for a side dish that’s gone awry or find out the “fun” way that takeout Chinese food and fortune cookies taste much better than a Christmas turkey, and we should do this every year…right? The important thing is the people around you and the fact that you’ve taken time out of your busy lives to celebrate and be with one another. That said, you still need to get ready for all the festivities, whether you’re hosting the main event or just having a holiday cocktail party, and we’ve got a few ideas to help keep you on track. Having out-of-town guests stay at your house? Make a list of dinner dishes to keep your company fed during their stay at Chez Holiday. Buy all the groceries the week before so that you’re not scrambling around at the last minute, and you’ll have enough time to get some other things done… 16 | VIP Clarksville Magazine • Holiday Issue

Like cleaning and getting the guest room ready. Make sure the guest beds have fresh sheets, and make your guests feel even more welcome by setting out a bottle of water and a glass on the nightstand along with some fresh flowers. If you know what they like to read, add a magazine or two to the mix. If you’re playing hostess (or host) with the mostest, clean up the house a little at a time, starting the week before. That way you won’t get overwhelmed in the midst of everything else you have to do just to keep your normal life in order. Do one room at a time and concentrate on the areas of your home that will actually be used. Decorate! Show off your Santa spirit in whatever way you want—this is the season of Ugly Sweaters, so if you love to get kitschy, celebrate it without shame! For any gathering you’re hosting, make sure you have plenty of dishes, flatware, and serving vessels to accommodate the crowd—and all of the food you’re serving. It may help things run more smoothly to take stock of your serving vessels and mark out which dish is for which item by tagging them with Post-Its notes. You’ll also want to prepare everything as much in advance as you can, in regards to the food you’re planning to serve at your holiday soiree. Make sure that your Christmas turkey is thawed, and assemble casseroles and dips so that you have to only slide them in for baking or transfer to the table on the day of the event.

Cranberry Mojito Ingredients: • 1 bunch trimmed fresh mint

• 6 oz. frozen cranberry juice

• • •

• 2 10-oz. chilled bottles of

(roughly 1 cup) 1 cup white sugar 14 oz. cups light rum 10 oz. freshly squeezed lime juice

concentrate (thawed)

sparkling water or club soda

• 6 cups ice

Directions: In a large drink pitcher, muddle together mint and sugar. Add rum and lime juice, stirring mixture until sugar has dissolved. Add cranberry juice and water and stir together, then add ice. Pour into festive stemware and sip the sparking flavors of the season!

Baked Brie in Puffed Pastry

With Caramelized Pecans

Ingredients: • • • • • • • •

1 sheet frozen puff pastry 14-16 oz. wheel of Brie cheese 2/3 cup whole shelled pecans 1/4 cup brown sugar 2 tbsp. butter, cut into small pieces 1 egg Crackers (for serving) Flour

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Remove one sheet of puff pastry from the freezer and allow it to thaw for 20 minutes before unfolding. On a lightly floured surface, unfold pastry sheet and roll out to flatten and smooth seams. Place Brie in the center of the pastry and top with butter, brown sugar, and pecans. Fold the sides of the pastry over the topped cheese and press each side together so that the entire wheel of cheese is completely covered in the pastry. In a small bowl, crack the egg and beat together the white and the yolk to create an egg wash. Lightly brush the egg wash over the outside of the pastry, using only enough to moisten the surface. Place the wrapped cheese on a large baking sheet, using a silicone mat or parchment paper lining to avoid sticking and bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes or until the pastry has become puffed and golden brown. Allow to cool for 5 minutes, then serve. December 2016 - January 2017 | www.vipclarksville.com • 17

On Friday, December 2nd, Austin Peay State University held their 7th annual Holiday Dinner in the ballroom of the Morgan University Center. It was all Black ties and Ball gowns as the guests in attendance were treated to a wonderful performance by the Department of Music. This year’s theme was “Holiday Dinner Goes Medieval” where there were performances by the singers of the choral program, the strings, and a very special appearance by the Governors Own Marching Band. Along with the music and merriment there was a beautifully prepared menu which made for a very special night to remember. This is a yearly event that now continues into two nights and is growing every year.

RADICAL MISSION COMPASSIONATE MINISTRIES

RADICAL love S TO R Y B Y L I E S E L S C H M I DT P H OTO G R A P H Y S U B M I T T E D

The cost of daily living can sometimes be overwhelming, especially when you have a family to support. Healthcare bills, food, clothing, rent…every little thing can add up and tip the scales that leave millions of people facing homelessness, starvation, and death. In a country like ours that should be the land of plenty, America is actually a country where want is far more prevalent that we might imagine; and hope seems far away and out of reach when it should be well within grasp. It is for these struggling souls that Radical Mission Compassionate Ministries was begun in Clarksville a decade ago, offering Christ-centered assistance to families daily facing challenges that some of us are fortunate enough to consider a mere check on the to do list as we go about our lives. We thoughtlessly swipe our cards at the grocery store while others can hardly afford a loaf of bread, we dress in closets stocked with clean clothes and drive our cars to jobs that help us pay for our needs. Day in and day out, we go about our routines, while their routines consist of wondering how they’ll pay for the things they need today.

We want people to see us and our ministry as a place to start transforming their lives. -Jon Vaughan Over the past ten years, Radical Mission has walked alongside these families, providing them with “hand-ups” in every way imaginable, from clothing and shoes to family counseling and rental or mortgage assistance. It’s an all-encompassing expression of God’s love, a way to serve the needs of these lost and struggling members of the community who so desperately need hope and help in order to have a better life. “We want people to see us and our ministry as a place to start transforming their lives,” says Jon Vaughn, Executive Director at Radical Mission. “Clarksville is such a wonderful town, full of loving and caring people, and we have a great opportunity to change families and help them breach the poverty cycle,” Vaughn continues. “Radical Mission is here to change the face of Clarksville with the love of Jesus, and we focus on building loving and caring relationships through our programs to help stop the poverty cycles that perpetuate through the generations of so many families.” 30 | VIP Clarksville Magazine • Holiday Issue

THE CHRISTMAS SEASON IS A SEASON OF BLESSINGS — AND BLESSING RADICALLY IS WHAT RADICAL MISSION IS ALL ABOUT. During Radical Mission’s past decade of service, the organization has fed nearly 800 children and adults through the Food Pantry each month, distributed clothing to more than 550 adults and children every month through the Clothing Closet, and given monthly counseling to an average of 15 families. Children’s food bags are given out on weekends and Blessing bags help feed the homeless. Even rent and mortgage payments and utility bills receive radical help, those donated dollars sometimes the only thing keeping families safe and warm in their homes. Even as it offers assistance, however, it is hardly the goal of Radical Mission to become a crutch. As they help families get on their feet financially, they help them become stable enough to become independent, offering counsel and advice that will change their futures forever. The mission can hardly go on without help of its own, however, and what began as a small youth community outreach program has now grown to a countywide organization that’s moving the entire city. It is indeed a radical mission, led by caring individuals brought together to offer their own hearts, hands, and financial blessings to show how very much the under-served are not under-loved. In keeping with such a giving spirit, Radical Mission began Warm Souls in 2008, serving dinner on Christmas Eve to struggling families and individuals who needed a taste of love to warm their holidays. “These are people who would not have a Christmas celebration otherwise—it’s a time for us to feed them and bless them in a season that is all about giving,” Vaughn explains. And indeed they give. During their first year, the 50 volunteers that gathered at Community of Hope First Church of the Nazarene to serve on Christmas Eve fed 125 guests, a number that has grown exponentially in the past seven years. As have the number of volunteers. Now, the compassionate members of Radical Mission are numerous enough to take on the even bigger challenge of feeding more mouths and offering more than 1170 children and adults a show of true Christmas spirit. In addition to dinner, Warm Souls is now an event, providing donated toys, household goods, winter clothing, and even services like family portraits, haircuts, and vision and medical screenings. The Christmas season is a season of blessings—and blessing Radically is what Radical Mission is all about.

WANT TO GET LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW TO GET RADICAL? Visit www.RadicalMission.org to find out more about volunteer opportunities, needed items for donation, and ways to donate financially. Much like the other numerous annual events they host to show special appreciation to military personnel and the families that support them, The Eagle Ambassador Breakfast that took place on November 3, 2016, was a time of recognition and thanks offered not only by the Eagle Ambassadors, but also the 225 members of the business community and local officials who gathered together to express their appreciation. This year’s event hosted special guest speaker Cindy Stonebraker, a member of the Board of Directors for the National League of POW/MIA Families, who offered a moving personal speech that clearly illustrated the emotional struggles faced by so many family members of POWs and MIA soldiers.

This Year is Your Year! S TO R Y B Y L I E S E L S C H M I DT

The clock is nearing twelve o’clock on New Year’s Eve, and whether you’ve already created your list of resolutions or have yet to let the champagne bubbles inspire you, these last few moments of the year are ones to reflect on, to use as a springboard for the things you might like to change in the upcoming year. The year that’s coming to a close is but one chapter of your life, and the new one that’s just beginning is full of blank pages of the story you have free reign to write. It’s important, however, to remember not to put too great an expectation on yourself. If you’re planning to make a list of resolutions, make one that’s actually achievable for you. If you want to get in shape or lose weight, set your goals with a more realistic mindset, one that won’t leave you feeling defeated before the party confetti has even been cleared from the floor. All too often, we set lofty ideals for ourselves that sound great as we’re making them, but we end up caught in a cycle of self-defeat because of the degree of expectation; and we toss aside that resolutions list feeling frustrated and stuck. Resolve for this year to be different—make resolutions that are fun, rather than punishing. Make a list that’s positive and inspiring to you. Yes, we all have things we need to work on, but looking at your list shouldn’t make you feel as though the way you are right now isn’t good enough. You are a person to be celebrated; so as the clock strikes midnight, celebrate who you are even as you look to whom you’d like to become. Here’s to you, and here’s to the possibilities ahead. Here’s to a new year and all it has to offer.

Hungry for a great year?

HERE ARE A FEW “GOOD LUCK” FOODS TO ENJOY AS THE NEW YEAR DAWNS... • Lentils and black-eyed peas are traditionally served in hopes of bringing wealth, so cook some up as a tasty side dish or in some stew.

• Want a year full of abundance? Tuck into a bowl of rice or another grain to keep the blessings coming. • If you want a baby, get figgy. In many cultures, figs are a symbol of fertility, so bite into some fresh figs or spread some fig jam on a bagel.

• And speaking of bagels, bagels (and other ring-shaped foods like doughnuts) are considered symbolic of a year that has just come full circle.

• If you love pork, you’re in luck—literally. Pork is traditionally eaten at New Year’s in hopes of bringing prosperity, as its rotund shape is a sign of plenty, and the way it uses its snout to root forward while it eats is considered to be representational of making progress in the year ahead.

• Strike it rich with cornbread. The golden color of the bread’s corn is symbolic of real gold, and extra whole kernels baked into the batter signify nuggets of this precious metal.

• If you’d love to prolong your life as long as possible, slurp some noodles without breaking or biting them.

• Much like beans, fish scales are evocative of coins, and many countries believe that eating whole fish will increase wealth in the New Year. Roast some for your meal and celebrate the abundant possibilities for advancement and prosperity in the year ahead, as well—something that these aquatic creatures embody both by the fact that they swim forward and that they travel in schools

• More greens mean more green - as in money. Eat spinach, kale, collards, or any other green of choice to build your chances of financial increase.

OLD SMOKEY S T O R Y BY L I E S E L S C H M I DT

Just say the words “Great Smoky Mountains,” and your mind is flooded with images of the thickly wooded forests and rolling landscapes, rustic log cabins, and picturesque little downtown streets lined with quaint shops and restaurants that offer a peek into authentic mountain living. It’s these very things that keep the Smoky Mountain area thriving, that country feel that so many other places try without success to replicate. It’s in the air here, a certain smell and energy of life—life built out of the very ground and hewn from the trees. Life carved into mountains that echo with the history of the people who have created new beginnings here with their blood, their sweat, their hope, and their hearts. That very feeling pours out into the cities and towns surrounding it, as well, in Gatlinburg and Sevierville, communities wrapped in the great embrace of the Smokies, the heart and the lifeblood that keep them alive and connected. These rural mountain areas are insulated somehow, from the frenetic pace of the world outside. Family and friends seem to hold greater importance, respect and honor and faith run as deep as the roots of the trees. And while modern life certainly has its place here, it’s the way that they maintain their humility and their spirit of homespun tenacity that bring tourists in by the droves, capturing the hearts of countless people who fall in love with the sights, the smells, and the flavors of a place unlike any other. The attractions to the area are as seemingly endless as the trees— boundless in their charm and their appeal to young and old alike, offering everything from authentic bluegrass concerts to theme parks and outdoor explorations through trails and caverns, the Smokies have the perfect way to create new memories and embark on new adventures. Going to Gatlinburg? Make a point to hit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where you can hike into the mountains and swim in a real swimming hole. Go fly-fishing, scout trails, ride on horseback, or try out your skills as geocatching. If you love an adrenaline rush, head to Ober Gatlinburg and go skiing, snowboarding, sliding, tubing, white water rafting, or zip-lining. In downtown Gatlinburg, family fun powers on with fast-flying rides, and Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies will have you shaking your 40 | VIP Clarksville Magazine • Holiday Issue

head in disbelieving wonder as its tunnels lead you under a large shark tank. If you want a bird’s eye view of the Great Smokies, take a trip on the Space Needle—you’ll feel high enough to reach out and touch the clouds. Art galleries, shops, and famous eateries offer the true flavor of Gatlinburg; and great museums show off priceless pieces of history in everything from real Hollywood memorabilia to salt and pepper shakers. Take a load off and set for a spell at the Ole’ Smoky Moonshine Distillery, where they create some of the best ‘shine in the country and offer a peek at the process from the seats of the old wooden rocking chairs that pack their huge outdoor space, all while live music keeps spirits running high. Sevierville has plenty of its own fun, with local shops, boutiques, galleries, flea markets and antique shops, and even outlet malls to keep even the most addicted shopper charmed. Country love is cooked up in some of the best restaurants you’ll ever visit, and the natural outdoor wonder means you can create the adventure of your dreams. Whether you love golfing, hiking, fishing, or rafting, there’s no shortage of the ways to explore all that Sevierville has to offer, so make it a priority to put this great city on your list. No visit to the area would be complete without a stop in Pigeon Forge to check out its great shops, restaurants, natural parks, mini-golfing, and go-karting. And if you listen closely, you can hear the excited screams of riders zipping down the tracks of the rollercoasters at Dollywood, a theme park so packed with absolutely amazing rides, shows, and attractions that you’ll want to make it an annual tradition. Want more jaw dropping fun that’s also educational? Hit the Titanic Museum or WonderWorks to learn about and see all kinds of things that will have your head spinning is awe. As the area rebuilds itself from the recent fires, show your own support for the people who call the Smoky Mountains home. “If you want to help Gatlinburg, come back and visit us. We’re gonna be back…and we’re gonna be better than ever,” says Gatlinburg Mayor Mike Werner. So take a trip to see all the area has to offer, stay and play with them, create new memories there, and take a minute to stand in wonder at the kind of beauty that absolutely takes your breath away.

gatlinburg from the eyes of a child

Naturally, kids have their own perspective on what makes a place fun, so we went straight to the source and got 8 year-old Jack Gunderman’s take on what makes the Gatlinburg area worth the wonder. On the kid’s menu: Bubba Gump Shrimp & Co.- “I ate so much shrimp I thought I would never want shrimp again! It came in a bucket, and there was lots of cool stuff to look at on the walls!” Learning at it’s best: The Wonder Works Museum- “It’s so awesome—the museum is upside-down!” The Titanic Museum- “It looks just like the real Titanic, and going there taught me so much more about it. There was a part that let you feel how cold it was outside if you were really on the Titanic, and we got to see the famous violin that went down with the ship. They’d pulled it out of the water and put it in the museum.” Repeat play: “I can’t wait to go back for Christmas! We’re staying in a cabin. Mommy & Daddy says Santa will be able to find me no matter what!

CLARKSVILLE KENNEL CLUB DOG SHOW S TO R Y & P H OTO G R A P H Y B Y GREG WILLIAMSON

They came from all over in all shapes and sizes to compete in the Clarksville Kennel Club Dog Show. According to CKC President Jill Hootman, this is the first time in eight years that the show has returned to Clarksville. A once prominent event was held, at then named, Fairgrounds Park, at the Wilma Rudolph pavilion. In 2008, straight line winds ripped the pavilion down and the group was forced to partner with Jackson, Tenn. and then Franklin. Through word of mouth, more advertising, and the club returning to Clarksville, the hope is to bring their show back to where it was before they were forced to leave town. they moved it to October. On October 29, 2016 members of the community celebrated the grand opening of Old Glory Distilling Co. The highly-anticipated opening saw many visitors come through the brand new doors of its authentic brick building - which can be seen from Highway 24 - and became an iconic sillhouette for the City of Clarksville months before its first bottle of vodka ever came out of the still. Though some had the oppoprtunity to catch a few sneak-peaks of Clarksville’s newest indoor hotspot by attending one of the many events that has been hosted in the Old Glory event space, the grand opening meant trying one of the various small-batch spirits at the tasting bar and exploring the gift shop. Live music was available on the lawn and food trucks stopped for this familyfriendly event.

CTS UNVEILS BUS WRAPPED IN ANTI-SMOKING MESSAGES Officials from the City of Clarksville, Clarksville Transit Service and the Montgomery County Health Department joined together at City Hall on Monday to unveil a CTS bus wrapped in several huge anti-smoking messages. The “rolling billboard” offers slogans and graphics of athletes that are targeted at teen-agers, and make the case that tobacco use is a losing game. The “rolling billboard” offers slogans and graphics of athletes that are targeted at teen-agers, and make the

case that tobacco use is a losing game. One side of the bus proclaims, “Don’t Let Tobacco Be In Control: It’s Not Worth the Cost.” On the other side, the large letters say: “Not at the Top of Your Game? Cigarette smoking makes your muscles weak.” On the back, a graphic of a skull and crossbones adds some deadly seriousness to a simple plea of “Be Smart, Don’t Start.” All sides of the bus display a key contact number – 1-800-QUITNOW – which can be used by phone or online to reach the Tennessee Tobacco Quit Line, which offers help for people who want to quit smoking or chewing tobacco. The program, which requires registration, provides personalized support from trained counselors and a three-months supply of anti-smoking patches. “We’re so proud to work with the State and the Montgomery County Health Departments to bring this antismoking message forward in such a big way,” Mayor Kim McMillan said. “It’s especially important to reach young people, before or just as they are starting to use tobacco, and give them some strong health reasons to avoid taking up the habit.” `CTS, the MCHD Health Education Team, and Signs Now have been working on the bus wrap project for nearly a year, as part of a statesponsored three-year series of antismoking initiatives. The bus-wrap idea was first used in Memphis, and now Clarksville is the second city in the state to have a bus totally wrapped in anti-tobacco messages. `“Our mission was to target messages for teens,” said Megan Carroll, part of the MCHD Health Education team that worked on the bus project. “With that age group, you have to focus on sports, active lives and good looks to get their attention, so that’s how we shaped the graphics and wording.”

KENWOOD’S JROTC CADETS FOCUS ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS When school started in August, Kenwood High’s JROTC cadets began their learning project which focused on Domestic Violence Awareness Advocacy. Since then, they have completed a comprehensive undertaking which included: completing classes on anger management and violence prevention; coordinating a community walk involving 600 students to raise awareness and money; presenting prevention; creating and distributing hotline pamphlets; creating advocacy posters and participating in cleaning up a garden at the school, dedicated to the late Pam Herring (Cooper), who was an assistant principal at Kenwood when she was the victim of domestic violence in 2007. The students exceeded their money-raising goal and recently presented a $700 check to SafeHouse.
