Story by Liesel Schmidt Unless they’re functioning on some super-human reserve of energy, most people are tired during the day. We live our lives constantly running from point to point, juggling busy schedules that wear us down physically, mentally, and emotionally. So how do you know you’ve got something more serious going on than a simple matter of being overstressed and over scheduled? When your health is on the line, it’s important to take a deeper look at how you’re feeling and whether that overwhelming desire to take a nap is really symptomatic of a sleep disorder like sleep apnea.

If you’re like a large percentage of the population, you probably associate the words “sleep apnea” with older people. A majority of us form a picture in our heads of elderly individuals nodding off in the middle of the day, their heads dropping to their chests as they’re suddenly overcome with drowsiness and fall asleep, only to suddenly jolt awake with a snort a few minutes later. It’s a common misconception; but the fact of the matter is this: sleep apnea is a disorder that affects people of all ages, from children to adults, and it can be dangerous if it’s left untreated. SUMMER 2019 • 9

THE DOC IS IN

Defined by Mayo Clinic as “a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts,” there are actually three types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, and complex sleep apnea. The most commonly experienced of the three— obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA—occurs when the muscles located at the back of the throat relax, causing the airway to narrow or close as you breathe in. As a result, you can’t get enough air, and the oxygen level in your blood lowers, alerting your brain to the fact that you can’t breathe and briefly rousing you from sleep so that you can reopen your airway. The period of wakefulness is usually so brief that you don’t remember it, which is why most people don’t recognize the fact that they have

OSA on their own. This pattern of waking to restore your oxygen supply can repeat itself five to 30 times or more each hour throughout the course of the night, which severely impairs your ability to experience deep, restful sleep. Without that restful sleep, you’re at risk in ways you might never have dreamed of. “Left untreated, sleep apnea is dangerous because of the excessive daytime sleepiness and driving while drowsy,” says Jennifer J. Cornell, DDS, of Back to Basics Dental Center, LLC, DBA Back 2 Basics Dentistry. In her work at Dental Sleep Solutions of Clarksville, Dr. Cornell has been treating patients with obstructive sleep apnea, snoring, and nighttime bruxism for more than seven years, specializing in providing dental appliances to patients that better their health through better sleep. Among those issues is damage to the heart and liver, diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and complications with medications and surgery. “When the body cannot rest and recuperate your body remains in a constant state of stress due to lack of proper oxygen levels circulating in the blood, which leads to the brain, organs, and tissues not being able to repair themselves and recover from the day, which would normally be done during sleep. Since your body is struggling to breathe

10 • VIP HEALTH & BEAUTY

and pull in oxygen, you’re left feeling more exhausted throughout the day.” That daytime fatigue means you’re more likely to fall asleep during normal activities; and children and adolescents with sleep apnea often suffer from poor grades at school or experience behavior problems. So just what are the symptoms of OSA? “Most commonly, symptoms include excessive daytime sleepiness, snoring, waking up choking or gasping, morning headaches, restless sleep, forgetfulness, mood changes, and even decreased interest in sex. Dental symptoms include nighttime grinding or clenching of teeth, mouth breathing, scalloped tongue, cheek biting, excessive wearing of teeth, broken dental restorations, and broken teeth,” Dr. Cornell says. Solving the problem is critical, but key to that is diagnosis, which is done using various tests such as home sleep testing (HST) or observed sleep testing in a sleep lab. “Once the results are interpreted by a boardcertified sleep physician, recommendations for treatment can be made, based on severity of sleep apnea,” Dr. Cornell explains. “Oral appliance therapy is generally recommended for mild and mild to moderate OSA, while moderate to severe OSA’s first line of treatment is the use of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines. In some cases, however, CPAP treatment is not tolerable by the patient; so oral appliances may be used as an alternative.”

Just how it works is pretty simple, according to Dr. Cornell. “The appliances hold the lower jaw forward and stable while you sleep, thus keeping the airway open and not allowing for the collapse of the tissues involved in proper breathing.” Custom-made to the patient’s mouth and teeth, the appliances can do their work to allow clear breathing during sleep; and that’s definitely a dream come true.

FIT TECH

Watch Yourself

FITNESS TECH FOR THE HEALTHIER YOU Even if you’re not super-focused on changing your habits or lifestyle to be healthier, those are all great tools to have strapped your wrist. Story by Liesel Schmidt SUMMER 2019 • 13

There’s no time like the present for getting in shape, and if you’re like 99.99999 percent of the rest of the free and civilized word, you’ve probably set a goal for yourself (or twelve), with one of them having at least some relation to health, fitness, or weight loss. And even if you’ve got those goals taped to your bathroom mirror, posted on your refrigerator door, or scrawled on a Post-It note stuck to the monitor of your computer, it can be easy to lose track of your target. You forget to get up and move, you rely on the scale to tell you how you’re doing…You even guestimate how much activity you’ve gotten. It’s a guessing game in so many ways, which is why having the latest products in highwizardry techno-gadgetry on your wrist is so helpful. And with the many variations of fitness trackers and smart watches available, there’s hardly anything these wrist-top devices can’t do. Granted, they can’t make dinner for you, give you a makeover, or transport you to the alternate reality of your choosing; but they still make life—and getting in shape for that life—much easier. Case in point: You can set them to send you reminders to get up from the chair at the office (or at home…we see you, working there in your comfy pants. But we don’t judge. Nor do we judge the fact that there’s a glass of pinot sitting next to your laptop. Antioxidants are a good thang, lady!) and move a bit to get your blood flowing every hour or so. They can track your heart rate all day long, monitor your sleep habits, wake you up in the morning by sending gentle (yet effective) vibrations to your wrist, and gauge your water intake. All very helpful things, no? Even if you’re not super-focused on changing your habits or lifestyle to be healthier, those are all great tools to have strapped your wrist. And oh-soconvenient, too. But when you’re trying to kick it up a notch, it’s even more beneficial to have one of these devices in your techno mix. They track your mileage for whatever method of movement you’re sweating out, regardless of whether you’re on foot, in a pool, or on a

14 • VIP HEALTH & BEAUTY

bike. And that heart rate monitor? It’ll tell you your heart rate during your workouts and use it to calculate the calories you’ve burned. They also work their magic to give you an accurate measurement of your body mass index and actual percentage of body fat. Unlike a regular old step-on scale, that means you’re not simply looking at the weight of your body. You’re being given a clear breakdown of where that weight comes from, whether that’s actual muscle mass, water, or fat. And all of those numbers are key in helping you reach your fitness and wellness goals. Obviously, there’s a lot being packed into fitness trackers of all kinds. But furthering it still are smart watches, which is why they’ve generally surpassed the use of more simple fitness trackers. Granted, those fitness trackers are beneficial as well, but there are some things lacking in their design. By all accounts,

smart watches are essentially wrist-top computers in the style of Inspector Gadget or 007. They send and receive emails, texts, and phone calls just like your phone would. They connect to the Internet. They play music. They have GPS abilities. What’s not to love? They make your life easier as a whole, but they’re even better when you use them to better your life in the ways that matter--your health and wellness. So whether you’ve got major weight loss or a simple re-boot of your healthy lifestyle on your radar, use the advancements of modern technology to help you out and invest in a smart watch or fitness tracker. You’ll put a new spin on the old saying, “It’s all in the wrist.”

YOU CAN. YOU WILL. END OF STORY.

MAN CAVE

Sweat Together,

We all know that physical fitness can benefit your health and well-being, but did you know it can also benefit your romantic relationship? There is a growing body of evidence that couples that work out together tend to stay together. Here are some reasons why:

Story by BJ + Lenise Faulk Photography by Tony Centonze

Your spouse helps you reach your fitness goals! Husbands tend to engage in more physical activity when their spouse offers more supportive comments. Both men and women are also more likely to improve unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol consumption.

Stay Together 16 • VIP HEALTH & BEAUTY

A spouse is a healthy accountability partner! Workouts become more efficient with your spouse. You may not be aware of their influence, but you may improve your speed or experience a boost in your energy output. It’s a great way to add a performance boost. Not only will your performance and attendance improve, but so will your bond with your spouse. Working out together can increase an emotional bond between you and your partner. When you exercise with a partner, you tend to create mimicry or match your actions. This creates a greater feeling of bonding. It will also create more

happiness in your relationship. Many studies have shown that partners participating in physical activity together tend to feel more satisfied in their relationship and more in love with their partner. Granted, it can be difficult to do endurance or cardiovascular activities together if you and your spouse are at different fitness levels. This makes weight training a perfect option for a couple’s workout! You can spot your partner, offer form tips and motivation. Boost the quality of your romantic relationship with a better alternative to date night! SUMMER 2019 • 17

& Get Healthy Story by Liesel Schmidt + Photography by Wy Wakefield

As a society whose days are often dictated down to the minute, we’ve become overstressed, overextended, and overworked. Our bodies and minds reap the consequences, which means that, in general, we’re tired, and anxious and needing mental space to reclaim the sense of inner peace and strength required to meet our daily challenges and be present for our families. We’re also feeling the physical effects of it all as it piles up; we’re achy, stiff, and less in shape than we’d like to be. The challenge lies in what do to about it, especially since the world doesn’t seem to be spinning any less slowly on its axis, and life doesn’t offer a pause button— no matter how much we may wish for one.

that yoga improves strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance, while meditation helps sharpen the mind, relieves stress and anxiety, and can even strengthen your immune system. Sounds like a win-win, right?

For these reasons, yoga and meditation are on the rise as ways to get back on track when it comes to physical and mental health. More than just trendy time-fillers that make us look “self aware,” they have proven benefits that sway arguments to their validity heavily in their favor.

For anyone suffering chronic back pain, doing yoga throughout the week can be a game changer. Studies have shown that stretching exercises and poses improve spinal flexibility and help ease pain in the lower back. Even individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can find relief in practicing certain forms of yoga because their slow, easy-paced poses and movements benefit the muscles, bones, and joints.

Yoga and meditation typically work symbiotically and have been a common practice for thousands of years as an alternative method of exercise to keep both mind and body healthy and happy. Studies have shown

Additionally, if you’re hoping to manage your stress levels, improve mental clarity, manage chronic conditions, and promote a healthier lifestyle, you might want to consider meditation and yoga before seeking out mainstream medicine. A few simple poses, combined with breathing techniques and positive coping skills can mean all the difference in living a happier, healthier life.

Forget hair of the dog when you’ve got a hangover and focus instead on downward dog. Expert studies SUMMER 2019 • 21

show that doing yoga can detox your system and get you feeling like yourself (i.e. a human who can tolerate light and sound and can move without waves of nausea crashing over you) much faster after you’ve over-indulged on the adult beverages. Certain yoga poses work on the thyroid gland, which improves the metabolism to rid your system of toxins. Reversing the blood flow and bringing more circulation to the brain also helps your body create balance and renew itself for the day ahead. Bonus: you’re not only curing your hangover faster, you’re also burning fat. Where’s the downside here? Heart health is also a huge issue that yoga and meditation address, and studies have linked yoga to reduced risks of heart disease because, as something that induces healthy blood flow, it helps eliminate arterial plaque. A natural blood pressure reducer, meditation also helps lower the heart rate and improve blood circulation as well as helping you relax, reducing stress hormones, and improving blood flow. If you think about it, it makes sense that the focused breathing techniques of yoga would also improve cases of mild to moderate asthma. You’re controlling your

22 • VIP HEALTH & BEAUTY

breathing during those yoga sessions, which can help you control your breathing when you’re outside the studio and in the real world. Stress and improper diets and insane schedules also have a tendency to wreak havoc on your gut, as well, but practicing yoga can be a tremendous help in keeping you regular. Many yoga moves actually “massage” internal organs that help move food through your digestive system and help stimulate the lymphatic system, flushing out toxins. In addition, meditation can help with symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) by reducing your stress levels, which in turn reduces the frequency of stress-related flare-ups of the conditions. Proper rest is essential to daily function, but let’s face it: it’s not always easy to get the amount of restful sleep we need. Fortunately, you don’t need to hit the sleep aid aisle to help with that, as yoga can greatly improve your sleep quality by reducing stress and lowering anxiety. Couple that with meditation and breathing techniques to help clear your mind and allow your brain to relax, and you’ll be sleeping like a baby in no time.

Yoga and meditation have proven links to emotional health, as well. “From an emotional standpoint, studies have shown that stress and trauma can rewire the brain, causing us to be stuck in a constant fightor-flight response. Yoga can help restore the body to homeostasis through the effects that yoga breathing has on the parasympathetic nervous system and the body’s stress response. In that regard, yoga has been proven to help with those suffering from PTSD, anxiety, and depression,” says Erika Wolfe, co-owner of Yoga Mat yoga studio in Clarksville, who opened the studio in 2015 with her business partner and fellow yogi, Amanda Rush. A yoga enthusiast since she took up the practice in 2013, Wolfe became a certified instructor in 2014 and has been spreading the peace to her clients ever since. “When it comes to the emotional health benefits of meditation, cultivating a meditation practice can help bring us back to ourselves.” - Erika Wolfe Wolfe goes on, “It grounds us in the present moment and reminds us to breathe. Meditation can help build a pause that comes between action and reaction. Tools we learn through our meditation practice can be used in our everyday lives to help cope with the stress that comes along with living, and meditation can come in many ways. Anything we do mindfully, with intention can be meditative, whether it’s walking in the woods,

woodworking, putting together a jigsaw puzzle, or even washing the dishes.” Not into all the “Ohmmm-ing” and “Namaste-ing? You don’t have to be. “We define yoga at our studio as the union of body and mind through breath awareness,” says Rush, who has been practicing yoga since 2014 and became an instructor in 2016. “Everything is about the breath. Breath is life, and we connect mindful movement through breath. "We often hear people express the concern that they can’t do yoga because they’re not flexible enough, not in shape enough, or not young enough. We tell them that as long as you can breathe, you can do yoga.” Breathe in, breathe out…better health is just a breath (and a few poses) away.

Erika Wolfe Erika Wolfe is a Certified Holistic Life coach and holds an E-RYT 500 certification as a yoga instructor. She is co-owner of Yoga Mat yoga studio and is the lead instructor of Yoga Mat’s RYT-200 Hatha Yoga teacher training held annually at Yoga Mat.

Amanda Rush Amanda Rush holds an RYT-200 certification as a yoga instructor. She is co-owner of Yoga Mat yoga studio and is currently enrolled in the Nashville School of Massage Therapy program to become a licensed massage therapist.

NOSH + NOURISH

Story + Photography by Jaclyn Beaty

A mouthwatering watermelon is the quintessential summer food. Its juicy flesh is over 90% water and rich in electrolytes, offering a sweet reason to stay hydrated in the heat. Watermelon is one of richest sources of lycopene, the antioxidant that gives the melon its deep pink pigment. Lycopene has been shown to slow the growth of several types of cancer cells, and is especially effective at reducing the risk of prostate cancer in men and cervical cancer in women. To pick the best watermelon, find one that is heavy for its size and has a dark yellow cream-colored spot where it sat on the ground to ripen. A white spot indicates that it’s underripe. Rinse or wipe the melon before cutting into the rind and store in the refrigerator once cut. One 20-pound watermelon can feed a crowd, but if you don’t have plans to share, enjoy its freshness sliced, cubed, pureed, juiced, frozen, or by trying one of these easy breezy recipes:

SUMMER 2019 • 25

sweet + savory

watermelon salad

INGREDIENTS • 1 cup spinach • 1 cup kale • 1/2 cup watermelon, cut into cubes • 1/2 cup blueberries • 1/2 avocado • 1 Tablespoon pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, or sesame seeds • Fresh mint leaves, chopped • Drizzle with olive oil

DIRECTIONS Chop greens to form the salad base. Layer with all remaining ingredients and drizzle with olive oil on top. Enjoy immediately!

26 • VIP HEALTH & BEAUTY

To get the most health benefit from watermelon, skip the pre-cut melon at the market. Many nutrients, especially Vitamin C, begin to diminish immediately after cutting.

INGREDIENTS 4 cups cubed watermelon, frozen 1 ripe banana, sliced

DIRECTIONS Freeze 1” cubes of watermelon for at least 2 hours. In a food processor, pulse frozen cubes of watermelon and banana slices. Puree until smooth, scraping down sides as necessary. Serve immediately or freeze longer for a firmer set sorbet.

INGREDIENTS • 1 cup fresh watermelon • 1 12oz can club soda, seltzer, or carbonated sparkling water, any flavor DIRECTIONS Blend watermelon in a food processor or high-speed blender until juice consistency is achieved. Divide watermelon juice between two glasses, and pour chilled carbonated water over top of the juice. Add ice cubes if desired and enjoy immediately. Makes two, 8-ounce servings.

Turn it into a spiked summertime spritzer by adding a splash of your favorite hard alcohol or wine! SUMMER 2019 • 27

1 watermelon 1 cup Greek yogurt, any flavor 1 kiwi, sliced ½ cup berries ½ cup cantaloupe, mango, or papaya Fresh mint Additional toppings as desired: coconut flakes, slivered almonds, or a drizzle of melted dark chocolate.

DIRECTIONS

Using a sharp chef ’s knife, cut a 1” thick round slice though the center of a large watermelon. Spread a thin layer of yogurt around the center of the melon. Top with an assortment of your favorite colorful fruits. Choose 1-2 fruits that can be thinly cut and shaped using cookie cutters. Spread thin slivers of fresh mint leaves and sprinkle any additional desired toppings for a colorful and festive dessert! Makes 8 servings.

The Do’s & Dont’s of

Wedding Day Hair A Q&A WITH ERICA ARROYO OF TRENDSETTERS SALON Interview by Liesel Schmidt

SUMMER 2019 • 31

IF YOU’RE THE BRIDE, ARE THERE ANY STYLES YOU SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM? Not necessarily, but I would recommend considering whether the wedding is indoors or outdoors, and also the weather forecast if you’re having an outdoor wedding. Humidity and heat play a huge factor in curls staying put, so for an outdoor ceremony, I would suggest a full updo. This is especially the case if your hair doesn’t “hold a curl.”

WHAT PRODUCTS ARE A DO? Very, very hard-hold hairspray. This isn’t the occasion for soft, touchable curls! We want your style to last all day.

WHAT STYLING PRODUCTS ARE A DON’T? Trust the stylist’s craft on that one! If you have slippery, silky hair, you might consider opting out of conditioner that day. Freshly washed hair is okay, but avoid oiling it up with creams and leave-ins. Dry, gritty hair is best. If you typically only need to wash your hair once or twice a week, you can wash your hair a day in advance rather than the day of. The key is you want hair that’s easy to work with.

32 • VIP HEALTH & BEAUTY

IF YOU’RE IN THE WEDDING PARTY, ARE THERE ANY RULES ON HAIRSTYLES? Do what the bride wants! If she doesn’t have a preference, find a style that you’ll feel comfortable in, keeping weather and location in mind. Also, if all the other bridesmaids are getting the same style, don’t be the only one who gets something different. It’s also important that you don’t decide at the last minute to do your own hair. Stylists book out a certain amount of time based on how many heads of hair or faces of makeup they were requested to do. This is time that she can’t give to another client last minute, especially if she’s providing services on-site rather than in her salon.

Do consider lash extensions. They make a huge impact on your look, and you’ll wake up feeling like you’ve already got makeup on—a terrific perk for your honeymoon. If you’ve never had them and want them for your wedding day, schedule an application of a full set at least a month in advance. That gives you plenty of time to make sure you like them and that you’re not allergic or sensitive to the adhesive. Get a “fill” at two weeks prior and then again a few days prior. That way your lashes will be nice and fresh, but you’ll know what to expect and won’t have any eye redness on your big day. Don’t show up on the big day with wet hair, as it puts the stylist behind schedule. When a bride is given a timeline of the beauty services for the wedding party, we take into account the amount of time it takes to curl and style. Adding a blow dry adds considerable time, not to mention the fact that it’s an extended service. Wet hair can’t be curled, so show up with it dry!

WHAT MISTAKE DO BRIDES OFTEN MAKE WHEN IT COMES TO HAIR? WHEN SHOULD YOU DO YOUR HAIR ON THE BIG DAY? Many brides say they want to go last so their hair and makeup are “fresh,” but it’s generally not the best idea. Wedding days almost never go to plan, and something always ends up causing a delay or time crunch. With all the stress of the day, the last thing we want is a panicking bride being rushed through her own hair and makeup to be ready in time. We’d much rather take our time with her, and if we need to rush at all, let it be on someone else.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP DO’S AND DON’TS? Don’t make any major beauty changes right before the wedding. For example, if you’ve always been a brunette, don’t go platinum blonde a week before the wedding— you might not love it. Any changes should be made at least a month or two beforehand. Hasty beauty changes right before weddings are often regretted.

Not speaking up if something hurts or doesn’t feel right. If a bobby pin hurts even a little bit now, it’ll hurt a lot later. Say something so we can adjust it. Also, speak up if you don’t like something. It’s your day, and we want you to love your look.

Weddings are an incredibly visual event. Photos are being taken at every turn, everyone’s looking to see who’s with whom, who’s doing what and saying what, who’s wearing what, and…And then there are the bride and groom. Just kidding. As a guest, the happy couple is naturally your main focus, but you also have a responsibility—aside from filling out your RSVP and sending it back promptly and buying them a gift—to dressing in a way that is respectful of them, that reflects the occasion, and that follows any dress code it might require. Choosing your attire can be unbelievably complicated, especially if the invitation doesn’t offer you any specifics. If you aren’t sure what to wear, however, it’s safe to follow a few guidelines that generally apply across the board, regardless of the time of day or the formality of the event. For one, it’s a universal rule that women should wear dresses and men should wear a suit—avoiding the color black for suiting and white for the dress, of course. Those are off-limits, unless the initiation makes mention of “black tie.” In that case, the black tux gets a thumbs-up. The white dress, however, is still a major faux pas and should never be considered. Nor should off-white, cream, or ivory. You’re a guest, and wearing one of those colors would be extremely disrespectful of the one and only woman who has claim to that color pallet: the bride. The only exception to the rule will be spelled out—literally—in a wedding invitation that specifies a “white wedding,” in which case, go nuts.

As much as we all love to sparkle, daytime weddings are not the time to break out the sequins. It’s also not the best time for black, as both sequins and black dresses are both considered more evening attire and more on the formal side; so reserve the sparkles and the LBD for those occasions. It’s also important to be respectful of the other people at the wedding—most specifically your hosts and their family members. Avoid anything that’s low-cut, too revealing, or with too high of a hemline. You don’t have to wear a turtle-necked dress that goes to your ankles; just be tasteful in your desire to show off your figure and look attractive.

Formalities Aside Most weddings are either informal or semi-formal, with no set dress code, which means that the bride and groom are putting their trust in the fact that you’ll know how to dress as you peruse the contents of your closet or go SUMMER 2019 • 37

shopping for a new ensemble. Take a look at the invitation and let the location of the ceremony help guide you in the process of knowing what to wear, and look at the wording. If it seems on the more formal side without actually saying “formal attire preferred,” play it safe and plan on going dressed in something that could be considered semi-formal. If it gives off a more casual vibe, you should be okay dressed more informally. For informal, think sundresses or dressy separates for day or a maxi dress or dressy separates for evening. Your choice of flat shoes or heels will depend on the style of the dress. For semi-formal affairs, both day and evening ceremonies mean cocktail dresses and heels or dressy separates. Go for sleek hair and a classic makeup look that doesn’t look overly trendy. Guys will be welldressed in dress pants or chinos paired with buttondown, collared shirts and oxfords.

A Formal Affair If the wedding is a formal affair and the invite specifies it as such, it’s clear what you have to do: dress in formal attire. That means longer dresses that are appropriate for evening, cocktail dresses…Think sophisticated and elegant, and you’ll hit the nail on the head. Some invitations will go so far as to specify “black tie,” “black tie optional,” and “white tie.” For women, black tie optional means a cocktail dress and heels, a formal dress, or even an elegant jumpsuit. Men have the option of a tuxedo or a dark suit and tie worn with black dress shoes. Black tie weddings require a formal dress or your dressiest cocktail attire and heels while

guys have to break out the tux or wear a black suit with a black tie. White tie is top-tier when it comes to dressing, which means you’ll have to wear a long, floorlength gown, heels, and your very best jewelry. Guys should wear a tuxedo with a white bow tie, vest, and black patent leather dress shoes. Regardless of how “formal” the formal gets, ladies, wear your hair in a way that compliments your dress and its neckline. Show off your shoulders in a strapless dress with a ‘do that’s upswept in a simple French twist or chignon. If you’ve got great hair that you want to showcase, treat yourself to a blowout or DIY one at home—just make sure your hair looks in top form. Heels are, of course, a must; but whether you choose pumps or a sophisticated pair of strappy heels, the style needs to be dictated by the style of your dress. Keep makeup looking tasteful with a smoky eye or a bold lip—just remember to pick one, rather than doing both at the same time.

A Little Bit Country Going to a wedding where the theme is country chic? You’re free to explore your more casual options, but never, ever, ever wear jeans or denim shorts—not even to a barn wedding. You’re there to celebrate the blessed union of two lives, not to bale hay or ride a horse, so be mindful of that. Think day dresses with hemlines

just above or below the knee, a great top paired with a skirt, or a breezy maxi dress. Your options in footwear are anything from sandals to heels to cowboy boots, but those boots better not look like they’ve been stompin’ through the barnyard. Guys will need to wear slacks or chinos and a shirt with oxfords, loafers, or—you guessed it—cowboy boots. In keeping with the theme, a country chic or barn wedding gives you a great excuse to wear a cowboy hat, so take advantage! Choose one that compliments your dress and makes you look like the total package, and wear your hair blown out to look bouncy and healthy. Keep your makeup minimal, with just a touch of color on your cheeks and eyes.

Love’s a Beach Beach weddings are definitely not the time to dress in anything overly formal. You’re on the sand, looking out at the waves, breathing in the salty sea air…What you wear should have that same feel. Think light, airy materials and

hemlines that won’t drag in the sand. Depending on the look of your dress, wear sandals or dressy flip-flops—heels aren’t beach friendly and will make your trek through the sand a struggle. Forego the blowout and embrace the beachy breeze with beachy-looking hair. Do loose curls or try a side braid, and keep your makeup fresh and sunkissed. Guys should wear chinos or dress pants with a button-down shirt and loafers or oxfords on their feet.

Whatever type of wedding you’re attending this season, however, the most important thing you can wear is a smile that shows your love for the couple and the happiness you feel at their new future. Even the most expensive dress can’t top that look. SUMMER 2019 • 39

I don’t believe in diets. They’re too restricting and don’t look at the long term. Instead, I believe in creating a lifestyle, something sustainable that can be practiced throughout the rest of your life. Eat real food, not foods that are low calorie and low fat. Eat food that is unprocessed and as close to its natural form as possible. Hunger means your body needs nutrients. When hunger hits, eat food that is nutrient-dense. These foods are usually lower calorie and keep you fuller longer! Fruits and vegetables are a great go-to; not only will these nutrient-dense, low calorie foods help you lose body fat, but they will also help your skin look more radiant!

While most pre-wedding advice recommends doing lots of cardio, mine consists of lifting weights. Lifting will not make you bulky; that’s a misconception. It will simply make you more toned and burn fat more efficiently than cardio. Most importantly: just take care of yourself! Not only will you look better, but you will feel better physically and emotionally as well. Your motivation shouldn’t just be to look good on your best day but to be the healthiest version of you on your big day! I always recommend that if you need help getting started, whether it be with nutrition or exercise, consult a professional to get you on the right track.

Stand with your head facing forward and your chest held up and out, then place your feet shoulder-width apart or slightly wider. Extend hands straight out in front of you, then squat down like you’re sitting in an imaginary chair. Lower down so thighs are as parallel to the floor as possible—with your knees over your ankles—and press your weight back into your heels. Keeping your body tight, bring yourself back to the standing position. Do 20 reps.

legNO.lifts 3 Lie on your back on a mat on the floor with your legs extended straight in front of you. Place your hands underneath your lower back so that your pelvis is supported. Slowly raise both legs simultaneously toward the ceiling, pressing your thighs together and keeping your legs straight. Lift until your hips are fully flexed and you can’t go any higher with straight legs, then lower back down to the floor. Do 15 reps.

Assume a facedown position on the floor, keeping your feet together, with your weight on your chest. Position your hands palms-down on the floor next to your shoulders with your elbows pointed towards your toes. Raise yourself using your arms, with your weight supported by your hands and the balls of your feet, until your arms are fully extended. Make a straight line from your head to your heels. Slowly lower back down just above the floor, then repeat. Do 15 reps. SUMMER 2019 • 45

With the bench perpendicular to your body, turn away from the bench and hold on to its edge. Extend your legs forward, bent at the waist. Lower your body by bending your arms while leaning forward and dip down until your shoulders are below your elbows. Lift your body up by straightening your arms, then lock your elbows at the top. Do 20 reps.

Stand with feet shoulder width and knees slightly bent, then bend your knees and lower down to a full squat position. At the bottom of the squat, quickly rise straight back up, bringing your knees toward your chest in midair until your thighs touch your torso. Release your legs and land softly on the toes, then lower feet onto ball, arches, and heel. Descend into the squat again for another explosive jump. Do 10 reps.

Stand with your upper body straight and core engaged, with your shoulders back and relaxed and your chin up. Step forward with one leg, lowering your hips until both knees are bent at about a 90-degree angle, with your front knee directly above your ankle. Make sure the other knee doesn’t touch the floor and keep your weight on your heels as you push back to standing position. Repeat, switching sides. Do 15 reps.

Lie flat on the floor with your lower back pressed to the ground. Put your hands behind your head with fingers locked together, then bring your knees in towards your chest and lift your shoulder blades off the ground. Straighten your right leg out to about a 45-degree angle to the ground, turning your upper body to the left and bringing your right elbow towards your left knee. Return to center and switch sides to do the same motion on the other side for one rep. Do 10 reps.

Raise your hips to create a straight line from your knees to shoulders. Squeeze your core and pull your belly button back toward your spine, holding for 20 to 30 seconds before lowering back to your starting position. Do 15 reps.

Stand on a ledge, curb, or step with your feet shoulder-width apart, heels hanging off the ledge, and the arches of your feet resting on the edge. Raise yourself up onto the tips of your toes, then lower your ankles down as low as you can towards the ground before coming back up again and repeat. Do 15 reps. SUMMER 2019 • 47

TAKE A SHOT

The Importance of the Measles Vaccine Story by Liesel Schmidt | Photography by Courtney Zenner Photography

With so much focus given to childhood vaccinations as a possible cause of autism and other health issues, MMR shots have been put under the microscope by countless parents all over the country who see the vaccine as too high a risk to take when it comes to the well-being of their child. According to data by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), however, vaccines including MMR and MMRV have no proven link to autism and should therefore be given priority when it comes to keeping everyone safe. As a preventative measure guarding against measles, mumps, rubella, and even the chicken pox, it has long been a practice of pediatricians to stress the need for MMR and MMRV vaccines in babies and young children. But is there really a need, or has all the hype been overkill? Can we simply hope for the best and believe that our children will stay healthy, even without the vaccine?

“Unvaccinated children can be exposed to measles when others choose not to vaccinate their own children... and in some cases, children who have a medical condition are unable to vaccinate, which puts them at direct risk, as well.” - Dr. Barbara A. Aquino

You could, but it’s a gamble. A very, very dangerous one whose risks aren’t worth taking, especially when you look at the facts. Google it, and you’ll find that measles is a highly contagious—and even deadly—disease that stems from a virus and is released into the air when an infected person sneezes or coughs. Up to two hours later, the virus is still airborne, which means that if you’re breathing that air, you’re being put at risk. It’s so contagious, in fact, that findings from the CDC show that if one person has it, up to 90 percent of the people around them will also become infected if they are not protected.

age of 20 are more likely to suffer from complications, the most common of which are ear infections that can sometimes lead to hearing loss and diarrhea. More serious complications include pneumonia—an infection of the lungs—and encephalitis—swelling of the brain that can lead to convulsions and even cause deafness or intellectual disabilities. Both could lead to hospitalization and death. They’re hard facts to consider, but extremely important ones, and your pediatrician will be the first to tell you that your first line of defense is vaccination, beginning at the age of 12 to 15 months. Protected—as in, vaccinated. In the 50-plus years that it’s been used, the MMR vaccine has had overwhelming evidence proving its safety and efficacy. Statistics from the CDC show that two doses are about 97 percent effective at preventing measles; one dose is about 93 percent effective. With so much speaking for it, why would any parent not want to give their child the greatest odds of staying free from the disease? “Unvaccinated children can be exposed to measles when others choose not to vaccinate their own children,” says Dr. Barbara A. Aquino, M.D., FAAP, who owns Aquino Pediatrics in Clarksville. A strong advocate for childhood vaccinations, Dr. Aquino urges parents to consider the risks that not vaccinating can pose to others. “Many ‘preventable’ diseases that were previously considered rare are reoccurring in our country because of the anti-vaccine movement; and in some cases, children who have a medical condition are unable to vaccinate, which puts them at direct risk, as well.” As a parent, you know that being forewarned is forearmed. And if you’re struggling over whether to make an appointment to get your child vaccinated, you need to know complications you could be facing if you don’t. Much like many other conditions, measles starts with fever. The fever progresses to a cough, runny nose, and red eyes. Next, a rash of tiny, red spots breaks out, starting at the head and spreading to the rest of the body. Children under the age of five and adults over the

So just who faces the greatest risk? • Children under the age of five • Adults 20 years old and above • Pregnant women • Individuals with compromised immune systems As you decide whether or not to vaccinate your own child, take a hard look at the facts and discuss your concerns with your pediatrician. The more you know, the better you’ll feel about your decision.

Pennyroyal SCUBA Center | Photo Courtesy of fb.com/pennyroyalscuba As a place more unexplored and more mysterious than space, the ocean is naturally a source of wonder, a vast expanse filled with creatures whose habits astound us, whose existence baffles us. Every corner of the deep is alive with spectacles, some so remarkable and so bizarre that they seem the stuff of myths; and if you’re intrepid enough to suit up and strap on the gear to dive into those depths, you’ll have the opportunity to behold them for yourself. Fortunately, it doesn’t take a passport and a plane ticket and to some far corner of the globe to channel your inner Jacques Cousteau. Quite the contrary, in fact, as the US offers unforgettable exploration that’ll leave you wide-eyed in amazement. And while not all of them offer ocean exploration, there are a great many not-tomiss dive spots within driving distance of Clarksville throughout the Southeast, so set your GPS, load up your wetsuit, and pack your sense of adventure.

There are even dinosaurs and an underwater basketball court, which uses a bowling ball for shooting hoops!”

If you’re a lover of Naval history, the sunken remains of the USS Massachusetts in Pensacola, Florida, will really get you charged up. Scuttled in 1921 in the shallow waters just off of Pensacola in the Gulf of Mexico, the battleship was used as a target for experimental artillery throughout the course of the next few decades. Having never been scrapped, the wreck was declared the property of the State of Florida in 1956 an now serves as an artificial reef and diving spot.

As you float along in the wondrous caverns and caves, you’ll see the mammoth natural architecture created by calcium falls as well as oar carts, scaffolding, grating, staircases, pillars, slurry pipes, and even an elevator shaft. “The underwater mine remnants make the site absolutely amazing and unique,” says Holladay.

LIFE | LOVE | LEGACY

Story & Photography by Tony Centonze Angel Moore has come a long way in her life, from growing up on a cotton farm just outside a small town in Mississippi where her parents owned a country store with a gas pump to a 50-plus year marriage to Clayton Moore and a loving family and friends in the city she now calls home—Clarksville, Tennessee. Earlier this year, she began the next chapter in a life she calls “blessed,” when she moved out of the house that she and her late husband built in 1980 and into a spacious apartment at The Villages. “I just celebrated my 80th birthday this past Saturday,” Moore said, after I made a comment about her youthful appearance. “I think the secret is in the genes. My mother had great skin, and she still looked young when she passed away at the age of 82. She spent her whole life on the farm, part of a family of 16 children.”

Unlike her mother, farm life was not for Moore, and so following her heart when she met the man of her dreams did not mean abandoning the land she loved—it meant entering a whole new life in a great big world. An Army man, Clayton Moore’s career eventually took them to Fort Campbell, and so she and her family established a home among the people of Clarksville. “We all worked together,” Moore says of the sense of community she saw with her church and the other military families at the time.

“My husband suffered some very serious injuries while deployed in 1970 to Vietnam. When he came back, I would visit him every day in the hospital. For nine months, our friends would always make sure our kids were welcomed home from school and kept safe.” Moore says that Clayton’s injuries forced him to cut his military career short and were the eventual cause of his passing ten years ago. She still wears a gold star pin in his honor.

says. “I would see my friends at church and sing with my group, but it was always just me in that house. My family was seeing changes in me that I wasn’t seeing. I just got a letter from my granddaughter in Curacao— she used to stay with me a lot, and we were buddies. She says that she hears from her mom about how much happier I am.” Moore says she’s confident that her new home is going to grow to be a big community with lots of activities.

Over the years, Clayton and Angel built a life in Clarksville, and she fondly recalls her military and civilian friends, being a member of the First Baptist Church and a singing group that she was a member. Listening to her speak, it’s clear that she has seen a world of change—“some good, some not so good.” And with all of the change has recently come one of the greatest: her move to The Villages. It was Moore’s daughter, Kathy, who initially suggested the move to an assisted living community, though she had already been considering the need herself. “I was living in a nice neighborhood,” Moore says, “but everyone around me worked, and I was there in the daytime by myself. I didn’t really mind it, but when we came here to look at things, I realized it was time. I had not said that out loud, but when Kathy said it, it made sense.” Fortunately, it was not a difficult transition. She’s making new friends and getting out more, and her family has commented on the change they’ve seen in her. “Both of my children feel good about me being here. There is a difference in my mood. I think I was lonely, and just didn’t realize it,” she

“The people here are wonderful and very caring,” Moore says. “Alison, Amy, and Lucy take great care of us, as does Cindy, our Activities Director. I didn’t know them before I got here, but they are friends now. They always have time for us.” Moore smiles, and her eyes light up as she shares some wise words. “I know things are working out just like they’re supposed to,” Moore said. “You never know what God’s plan is for you. But, for me, now, it’s coming into plain view. You have to accept what happens and move forward. Always make the best of what you have.”

“I think Clayton would have moved here, too,” she goes on. “We would have had fun here together. Since coming here, I’m more active. I’m still who I’ve always been, but it’s easier here. I’m meeting new people and trying new things. I would tell anyone this: Get out! You’d be surprised how much fun you could have.” And at 80, it seems Moore intends on having many more years of fun.

“Get out! You’d be surprised how much fun you could have.”

Suicide Prevention FINDING HOPE IN THE DARKNESS Story By Liesel Schmidt

Kate Spade. Anthony Bourdain. They’re names we recognize—she, for her iconic line of luxury handbags; he for his mastery of the kitchen and his wry wit and unique view of the world of food, which he explored with abandon and chronicled extensively both on the page and on the screen. But for these two celebrities, the reasons for their names being splashed across the headlines in recent memory is not that for which they had become so well known, but because of one common, tragic thread that unites them: they were both lost to suicide. Clearly, suicide sees no social status. It doesn’t care whether you’re rich or poor, famous or “ordinary.” It is blind to age, ethnicity, lifestyle, and gender. It affects everyone, regardless of their background, making it all the more challenging to pinpoint just who might be at risk. According to statistics from the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network, someone dies by suicide once every 12 minutes in the US alone, with suicide rates among youth between the ages of 15 to 24 having

increased more than 200% in the last fifty years. In fact, suicide is the second leading cause of death in this age group nationally. In Tennessee, it’s the third leading cause of death among the age group. And despite what you might assume, the elderly claim the highest suicide rate of any other age range in the nation. It’s mind-boggling to see the numbers and to think about how close they are to home. In the state of Tennessee alone, suicide has been found to be the ninth-leading cause of death, claiming over 1,100 lives per year, according to data collected by the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) in 2017. If you look around, it only begs the question: Whom might you know that may be struggling with thoughts of suicide? Is it a family member? A friend? A co-worker? Or is it you? The greatest tragedy of all, perhaps, is that suicide is preventable. The difficulty lies in the fact that it is still such a polarizing subject, one which so many feel uncomfortable discussing. There’s a certain stigma attached, and those words of shame haunt the minds

entire workforce; and the City of Clarksville has become the first city in Tennessee to meet that challenge.

of individuals struggling with the emotions that already war within them, silencing them until it’s too late and they can no longer be helped. All the more important, then, are initiatives to educate the world about suicide and how to prevent it. It’s crucial to know that there are resources available, that support is within reach, and that—even when there doesn’t seem to be another answer—suicide is not the solution. But it’s also important to know that coming forward and seeking help isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of strength.

Conducted by TSPN’s Zero Suicide Director, Misty Leitsch, the training program—called “QPR for Suicide Prevention” (“Question, Persuade, Refer”)—was completed by nearly 1200 employees of the City of Clarksville over the course of several months. “The QPR mission is to save lives and reduce suicidal behaviors by providing practical and proven suicide prevention training,” Leitsch said in a recent press release. “It’s an established way to train ordinary citizens on how to spot someone in crisis and how to approach them with help.”

It’s also an opportunity to find hope. Hope that the darkness will lift and that the future has possibilities, even if you can’t see them right now. The first step, of course, is acknowledging your own struggle. Fortunately in recent years, more support options have become available, offering greater opportunity for suicide prevention. Among such resources is the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network (TSPN), actively working to lower the numbers that seem so staggering and inform the public about ways that they can participate in prevention. So active have they been, in fact, that, under the direction of Executive Director Scott Ridgway, TPSN issued a challenge to cities statewide to hold suicide prevention training for their SUMMER 2019 • 65

The focus on suicide prevention in ClarksvilleMontgomery County has also given rise to community involvement in the Mayor’s Challenge to Prevent Suicide Among Service Members, Veterans, and Families. Formed in response to this initiative, a local team known as the Clarksville Suicide Prevention Alliance is also working with two federal agencies—the Veterans’ Health Administration and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration— to identify effective methods of suicide prevention in military communities; and members also recently attended a three-day strategy meeting in Washington, D.C., to develop evidence-based plans to prevent suicide using a comprehensive public health approach. “We believe that even one death is too many and that every life is valuable, and knowing that one of the top ten causes of death is something that’s actually preventable drives many of us to take action,” says Joey Smith, Public Health County Director of the Montgomery County Health Department. A member of the Clarksville Suicide Prevention Alliance, Smith was among those who attended the meeting in D.C. and came back armed and ready to put his training to use in the community he loves. There are, of course warning signs, and if you recognize them in yourself or someone you know, it’s important to take action. As offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs's website, a few signs of crisis include: • • • • • • •

Hopelessness; feeling like there’s no way out Anxiety, agitation, sleeplessness, or mood swings Feeling like there is no reason to live Rage or anger Engaging in risky activities without thinking Increasing alcohol or drug misuse Withdrawing from family and friends

If you find yourself thinking about hurting or killing yourself; are actively looking for ways to kill yourself; are talking about death, dying, or suicide; or engaging in self-destructive behavior such as drug abuse or carelessly handling weapons, now is the time to seek immediate help. It’s also important to know what to do if you see signs of suicidal behavior in someone else. “Your response is crucial in situations like this,” says Smith. “Stay calm and take it seriously. Never minimize the threat or assume it’s simply a joke or a way of getting attention,” he advises. “It’s also important to discuss suicide openly and directly. Listen. Show your support and concern, and remove objects such as guns or pills that could be used to inflict selfharm. Lastly, make sure that they get professional help. “Unfortunately, there is a stigma around people getting mental help,” Smith goes on. “To bring that stigma to an end and show support to those who are struggling, we as members of the community need to realize that suicide is preventable and understand that people who are suicidal desperately want to live; they are just unable to see alternatives to their problems.” In this battle against such a real—yet conquerable—foe, we as a community need to come together and show our love and support to those who are struggling. There is hope; there is help. They need only to realize that they are seen and that they are loved.
