Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re probably aware that, over the past few years, makeup has really become A THING. Like, seriously a THING; and social media is absolutely abuzz with amazing pics and tutorials from both professional and amateur makeup artists alike that show some of the insane looks they’ve achieved through the power of the pallet. Everywhere you look, there are faces whose every facet are highlighted and contoured and colored with such precision and skill that it boggles the mind, and it seems that all things mermaid/unicorn/rainbow are all the rage. Basically, there’s no color in the spectrum that’s off limits, and makeup is about more than just concealing a few flaws and setting off your best features—it’s about self-expression, and people are more than willing to play.

off lies in HOW you use what you’re using and how confident you feel in the look you’re serving.

From crayon-box hues that defy the rules of tradition to falsies so full and lush that they could set off a breeze in the next city when you blink your eyes, nothing’s considered too over the top. The trick in pulling it

So just what’s hashtagging for spring when it comes to makeup? Think spring showers and what they bring… Nope, not the flowers, but the rainbows. Those colors are inspiring eye shadow artistry like nothing else,

Ask the Pro

FOLLOW THE RAINBOW

Bronze colors are a great way to start off this warm season! Nude lip colors pair really well with a bronzed look because they add contrast. When picking out a nude lip color, don’t stray too far away from the color of your natural lip. If you naturally have darker lips, you’ll want to wear a nude that is only a shade or two lighter.

Miyea Smith | Lyndon’s Salon & Boutique 10 • VIP HEALTH & BEAUTY

If color is a new thing for you, start slowly by picking out one facial feature to enhance differently than usual. For eyes, you could use a vibrant eyeliner; for lips, make a bolder statement with a color you’ve never tried before. Practice at home, take pictures, and remember—it’s just makeup!

and the wide range of shades the pallet offers—both Technicolor boldness and as well as those whose more pastel-ly pigments make them a little less jarring—are ideal for every skin tone under the sun. To make the trend more do-able, choose complementary shades that blend well into one another; or take a risk and bounce around with your brush to bring in unexpected pops of color.

Think pink! Pops of pink are showing up in everything from lip-glosses and lipsticks to blushes and eye shadows, and going full-on with the girly color is one of the hottest things trending this spring. If you’ve got darker skin, try deep, rosy hues. For those with fair complexions, pastel pinks are the most complementary. BARELY THERE

LINE IT OUT

Spring is also loving a bold eyeliner, rocking out with shades that are anything but black. Think brilliant blues, vibrant violets, and fierce fuschias—all you need is a steady hand. BE PRETTY IN PINK For those of us who feel more comfortable with a more subtle, I just left my facialist/no makeup look, this season is still embracing the understated face. Use tones that add a subtle glow to your skin and make you look naturally flushed or perfectly sun-kissed. Even in this age of less isn’t always more and a go big or stay home mentality, there still seems to be an undeniable appeal surrounding both classic as well as more barefaced looks. Whatever your style, there’s a makeup trend perfect for you this spring and a limitless garden of colors just waiting to make your face bloom. SPRING 2019 • 11

Dr. Lehman also feels a good skincare regimen includes a Vitamin C product. Vitamin C is an excellent antioxidant and skin brightener. The molecule can be unstable, so addition of Ferulic Acid is helpful to ensure the product works well. Daily application of our K2 Signature Skincare™ Vitamin C + Ferulic Antioxidant and BHA Gel will protect skin from free-radicals which destroy collagen and elastin and are encountered in the environment throughout the day. At nighttime, Dr. Lehman recommends application of a topical retinoid product. Retinoids come in multiple forms and can be prescription or nonprescription. Retinoids in the form of Retinol are a non-prescription option that tend to be less irritating to the skin. “We have three topical medical-grade retinols in our K2™ and K2 Signature™ Skincare lines, because we know everyone’s skin is different and we can tailor the Retinol to each patient’s skincare needs.” The K2 Signature™ Gentle Retinol is great for those who have Rosacea or more sensitive skin. Dr. Lehman recommends applying a moisturizer after applying Retinol to help avoid irritation. Spectrum of

Superheroes Story by Liesel Schmidt In recent years, we’ve become much more aware of various developmental disabilities and social disorders, working closely with the individuals affected by them to understand them better so that they can be given the tools they need to succeed in all aspects of life. Differences of any kind are hard to overcome, especially when they’re met with a lack of knowledge, understanding, patience, and acceptance; but for the countless individuals with autism, those differences no longer have to be the things that keep them from having fully successful and happy lives. In an effort to increase awareness and get funding for research, April has been officially declared Autism Awareness Month. Both are key in making society more understanding, but we need to do more than that. We need to diagnose it early, find any possible means of prevention, develop programs to work with these individuals in their unique challenges, and learn to be more compassionate as a society. So just what is autism? By its official definition, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability. Most typically, signs appear during early childhood and affect the ability to communicate and interact on a normal level with others. Characteristic of ASD are a certain set of behaviors, and it is considered a “spectrum condition,” meaning that it affects individuals differently and to varying degrees—some more mildly, others more severely.

“All children need to be shown love, to be raised with compassion for themselves and for others, to be given the opportunity to thrive.”

SPRING 2019 • 17

Some of the most common behaviors associated with autism include a delay in language skills; difficulty making eye contact with others or holding a conversation; challenges with what is known as executive functioning—those things which relate to reasoning, planning, and making decisions; extremely focused, narrow, intense interests; poor sensory and motor skills; and difficulty in connecting with others on an emotional level. A person on the spectrum might exhibit many of these behaviors or show just a few, in addition to displaying many other behaviors besides, and the diagnosis of ASD is applied based on analysis of all behaviors and their severity. Unfortunately, no single cause of autism has been identified; but an increase in awareness and early diagnosis, early intervention, and access to the right services and support will lead to significantly improved outcomes. It might not seem like much, but every piece of the puzzle of this disorder counts. Every piece we put in place gets us closer to understanding and seeing success. And every piece of the puzzle connects these

individuals to one another and to the treatment and support they need to feel like they have a place in the world. It’s important to remember that autism IS treatable. And while individuals with autism may never “outgrow” the disorder, studies prove that early diagnosis and intervention lead to drastic improvements in the ways that they learn to function. According to the CDC, some signs to look for include:

• •

Lack of spoken language or marked delay in developing language skills Repetitive use of language and/or mannerisms such as hand-flapping, twirling objects, or using certain words or phrases repeatedly in rapid succession Little to no eye contact with others Lack of interest in forming peer relationships Lack of ability to engage in unstructured or make- believe play Persistent, almost obsessive fixation on parts of objects or certain activities

As we become more aware, we also need to become more accepting—especially during the childhood years. ALL children need to be shown love, to be raised with compassion for themselves and for others, to be given the opportunity to thrive. And unless children with autism are accepted—not only by the adults around them, but also by other children—they will never have the true tools they need not just to function, but to flourish.

“Moving from awareness to acceptance is a huge undertaking,” says Intake Manager and Development Director for Autism ETC, John Holtzman, who has worked with families and individuals affected by autism for more than a decade. “One of the first steps is understanding that every person in the world is given a gift they need to share with those around them, and this is especially true of those on the autism spectrum. Looking at history, gifted people on the spectrum include inventors, authors, artists, mathematicians,

musicians…it’s a list that goes on and on. Acceptance helps these individuals unlock these gifts and use them to benefit all of society, and it is up to each one of us to embrace and celebrate these different gifts and abilities. When we’re able to do that, we’ll truly be able to say that acceptance has been accomplished.

“Moving from awareness to acceptance is a huge undertaking... One of the first steps is understanding that every person in the world is given a gift they need to share with those around them, and this is especially true of those on the autism spectrum.” - John Holtzman It’s a goal worth pursuing, this move from awareness to acceptance, because then and only then will we have a world where the puzzle pieces are in place for the full picture to be completed…And what a beautiful picture it will be. Sweet Memories from The Villages at The River Club railroad before World War II, dotting the map through the South until they settled in Tennessee. After graduating high school, she went on to teach elementary school and was a teacher when she met her first husband, David. The couple married in 1955 and had three sons together, Winston, David and John; and Betty actually stopped teaching for a while. Sadly, David passed away in 1974. Betty married her second husband, Bill Heineman, in 1984. Story & Photography by Tony Centonze Betty Wood Heineman is well known in Clarksville, and thousands of local residents remember her from her teaching days. At the age of 87, she hasn’t slowed down a bit—and she’s keeping her new community at The Villages at The River Club as vibrant as she is. If you get a chance to spend some time with Betty, you’d better be on your toes. She’s a wonderful conversationalist, and it’s important to note that Betty’s laughter is contagious—and she laughs a lot. She’s led an interesting life, known some amazing people, and when she speaks, the minutes fly by. You’ll leave wishing for more time to delve into her story. “I was born on February 27, 1932, the same day as Elizabeth Taylor, whom I called my soul-mate, because we shared a birthday,” she says proudly. With easy recall and great detail, she speaks of a migratory childhood that followed the work of her father’s job with the

She took a short break from teaching and eventually retired from CMCSS in 1994, celebrating a career that spanned 35 years. Retirement, however, was short-lived, and she took a position at the Fort Campbell campus of APSU for the next 12 years. Having had such a long career in the area, it’s only natural that she still sees students she once taught. “I’m always bumping into former students,” she says with a laugh. “In fact, I taught Alison Hurt, who works here.” “She was my Algebra teacher, and I’m only one of many,” confirms Hurt, the Community Relations Director at The Villages at The River Club, who has nothing but praise for “Miss Betty,” using the name by which Betty is so well known. “Her students come and visit all the time. Nobody can forget her,” she goes on. “She’s been here since December, and we’ve shared tons of memories. I could listen to her stories all day. She’s the smartest woman—so gifted and talented— and everyone here loves her.” SPRING 2019 • 21

“I get my joie de vivre from my grandmother. She was the most fun person you ever met, and she lived to be 96. You have to remember, none of us will live forever, and life is too short to be unhappy. My grandmother always said, ‘It’s a choice. If you want to be happy, you will be; and if you want to be unhappy, go ahead, be miserable and make everyone around you miserable.” - Betty Wood Heineman

Hurt says Miss Betty has lots of ideas to help make The Villages great, and she’s not shy about sharing them. “She says she’ll make this the best community in the area, if we’ll just listen,” Hurt laughs. “And we believe her. We know we can learn from her. She’s still a great teacher.” “I do have ideas,” Betty agrees. “I want this place to be the best community it can be. I spent a few years in Mt. Juliet, and it was first class. I loved it and made so many friends there. But The Villages is wonderful, too. It has so much possibility, so much to offer,” she contends. “I told Alison, if I’m staying here, this place is going to be number one. Clarksville is a vibrant, and there is always something wonderful happening around town that we could participate in,” she says with a twinkle in her eye. “Once we build a community here, we might even be able to do some travel. At Rutland Place, we actually took a trip to Florida. That was an interesting group of ladies. They were all Yankees. I tried to make Southerners out of them!” she says with a burst of laughter.

22 • VIP HEALTH & BEAUTY

For Betty, miserable is not an option. She keeps herself entertained with music, card games, jigsaw puzzles, and reading. Clearly, she enjoys staying busy, but she also enjoys being social. “There’s no point in sitting alone. I’m a people-person, so I couldn’t live by myself. I say, the more people, the better, and I’ve met some great people here already. Still, I think we need more people, so I take brochures everywhere I go and tell everyone what a wonderful place this is. I’m sort of an unpaid employee,” she says with a laugh. “These are great people to work with, and when the right people come together, it feels like family. Everybody looks after everyone else.”

Southern Fashion

& Derby Styles HOW MODERN SOUTHERN BELLES DO SPRING Story by Liesel Schmidt

26 • VIP HEALTH & BEAUTY

SPRING 2019 • 27

Southern Style History 101 So we all have those images in our heads: the well-todo ladies of the antebellum South in their voluminous dresses, swanning about town with petticoats and hoop skirts making walking within close proximity a joke, so much real estate do these garments take. It’s Gone with the Wind and The Blue and the Gray, an outward representation of social status whose day-to-night styles were just that—like day and night. By day, these Southern women wore high-necked dresses with long sleeves and long hems that swished through the dust at their feet while they walked, carrying parasols to keep their skin as milky white as the times called for. By night, however, the bosoms were fair play, as the necklines plunged much lower, the sleeves dropped below the shoulders, and the fabrics were more

sumptuous. It’s an interesting thing to consider, the way these women literally wore their social status on their sleeves, though it was not at all uncommon. As women of means, they had influence from and access to European countries and drew on the styles of the day, bringing them back to the States and literally setting the trends for the newly formed American South. And since then, they’ve become iconic representations of Southern women with all their “fiddle dee-dee’s” and seemingly frail femininity. But under all those petticoats and hoop skirts, there was an undeniable grittiness, strength, and determination that have carried over into the way we, as Southern women, not only dress, but also carry ourselves today. How the Modern Southern Belle Does Spring Modern Southern women have a style all their own. Venture above the Mason Dixon line, and it’s pretty clear the way things fly down South that would get you a sideways look if you went North. The dividing line still exists, ladies, but who says that’s a bad thing? It just means we have a distinctiveness, a style that sets us apart and makes us stand out…And as Southern women, we must naturally assume that our way is the BEST way. So just what makes a modern Southern woman? First rule: It’s never the wrong time to wear a dress. To get groceries, to get an oil change, heck, to go to the mailbox, a dress is always a DO. After all, it’s HOT in

the South, so the more airflow we get, the better. Just remember to think lightweight, airy, and cheery. Prints are a great way to keep dresses daytime appropriate for any occasion, so be bold with patterns like fresh florals, paisleys, gingham, and polka dots. We also LOVE a monogram. Declare yourself, honey, and be proud of your name! Have it embroidered on anything from purses and boots to jackets, sweaters, and plain old-polos. It makes it YOURS and it makes the piece unique, so take ownership and wear it like the self-assured woman you are. In the South, boots are a major do, regardless of social status. Hello, have you checked the price on some of the better boots on the market? Some of them would easily give Jimmy Choos a run for their money, and frankly, they could even kick them in the…well, you know. After all, a great pair of boots is versatile and can be worn with anything from jeans and shorts to dresses and skirts, so they’re pretty much rule breakers. They’re also extremely long lasting, if you invest in a good pair. The longer you wear them, in fact, the better they feel, which makes the ROI—or return on investment—a major win.

Accessories are also a huge focal point. Here in the South, we have a respect for heirlooms—and things that LOOK like heirlooms. We wear our pearls with pride whether they came from the store yesterday or were once worn by our grannies. A good pearl anything is never out of style, just remember to mix it up and keep it fresh by not being all match-matchy and wearing the full set. Hats are also fair play. The sun is brutal y’all, and we need to stay dewy fresh and young looking. The modern lady doesn’t need to carry a parasol, though, so the hat makes a nice style statement at the same time as keeping you shaded from all those harsh rays. Taking the Win with Derby Fashion Hats, in fact, are an extremely pivotal point of fashion for Derby season. The bigger, the better, so just get ready to go all mad-hatter and explore your wild side. At no other time during the year are we given such a free pass to be outrageous with headwear, and it’s practically a race in itself to wear the best hat and put all the other ladies around you to shame. SPRING 2019 • 29

drag down your overall look with a blah pair of shades, though, so keep to the idea of being bright and bold with whatever sunglasses you choose. Spring Style for Southern Men

With that major hat comes great responsibility a great dress, as well, and florals are really the way to go. Sure, you could wear a solid, but now’s not the time to be a shrinking violet! Think big and bold to catch everyone’s attention while you’re out there being “out there.” Pair up the dress with a great pair of open-toed sandals, but remember that they shouldn’t steal the scene from your hat. Go with neutrals and colors that really compliment your attire without having too much presence, as this is definitely one occasion when shoes should play a very small supporting role. Same rule applies with jewelry. Think dainty and understated so that less focus is on your earrings or any other pieces you’re wearing and can stay where it belongs: THE HAT. Next, you need a mini clutch that’s fun and colorful, so again, you can be bold here. Bedazzled isn’t a bad thing when the purse is itty bitty, and it’s a great way to express your style. Don’t forget the sunglasses! You may have the shade of your hat to help you out, but your pretty peepers still need protection from the glare of the sun. It’s harsh out there, y’all! It’s key that you don’t

Any good Southern woman will tell you that a handsome Southern man is the ULTIMATE accessory (ha ha!), and there’s a distinct look that goes along with it. Guys here proudly wear pastels, whether that’s on a polo, a nice button-down, or even their pants and shorts. They’re secure enough to explore the more feminine hues, and with good reason. The lighter, the better, since darker colors are not only more somber, but also major heat-keepers. And in the South, we like to stay cool. Take a peek in their closets, and you’ll likely also find a few bow ties. Bow ties are a great sign of style, and with so many colors and patterns, they’re an extremely fun way to mix up your wardrobe and keep things interesting. Footwear is also important to Southern style. RUNNING THE

GOOD RACE Story By Liesel Schmidt There are so many ways to stay in shape and lose weight, and one of the fastest ways is running. You lace up, you hit the streets, you set your course for GO. It’s simple and inexpensive to do, you can do it anywhere, and there’s nothing that compares to that runner’s high: the rush of endorphins, the satisfaction of knowing that you put your whole self into hitting your mark. So much more so when you’re not just running for yourself, but for a greater good. It’s amazing to realize that your sweat equity is paying off in big ways, that every mile and every last meter is getting you closer to a finish line that signifies you giving back. That’s exactly what charity races are all about, and as more and more communities organize races whose proceeds benefit local charitable organizations or causes, it’s incredible to look around and see so many others who are willing to get in on the action. There’s a unique sort of unity that forms in that, a natural camaraderie with those gathered around you at the starting line. Strangers become friends and cheerleaders, and the road is the great equalizer. Running sees no social status or ethnicity, no cultural divide. All that matters is that you’re there and that

32 •• VIP VIP HEALTH HEALTH && BEAUTY BEAUTY 32

you’re giving it your all. There’s a win in all of us as we push on, mile after mile, and there’s something extremely self-affirming in knowing that you CAN achieve what you’ve set out to do. And whether you’re among the first to cross the line or in with the stragglers at the end, there’s the same amount of cheering waiting for you. You have contributed to the cause as much as anyone else—and that’s certainly reason to party.

“Local races raise money for non-profits and scholarships, and being able to show support for those causes is often the reason that so many people— whether they’re fast or slow—want to participate in the races,” says Valerie Hunter-Kelly, CEO/Team Leader for the Air Assault Team at Keller Williams Realty. An avid Clarksville runner who has been participating in both local and national charity races for the past six years, Hunter-Kelley now boasts 43 states under her

racing shoes and understands first-hand the ways that running for a shared cause can unify even the most diverse crowd. “Running or walking for a common goal allows unlikely people to come together unlike anything else. It makes a sometimes-painful experience fun, and it’s great to be encouraged and to be able to encourage others while you’re out there together. Whether it’s a 5k or a half-marathon, the races in our community have allowed me to meet people I might otherwise never have met, and it’s one of the best ways to see the area and connect with others.” From starting gun to finish line, charity races are a uniting force, bringing people together as they sweat it out on the road, contributing their time and energy to a common cause. It’s a worthy reason to lace up and put one foot in front of the other, and that’s a motivation unlike any other.

IN THE GYM

How do YOU define success?

Now That’s Success! Story by Liesel Schmidt Success is defined differently for everyone, but we tend to forget that when it comes to fitness. So often, we measure ourselves by the barometer set by the world around us rather than taking time to stop and think about what we truly want and what we truly need as we set goals and seek success in achieving them. Not everyone is on a quest for a bikini body. Not everyone is laser-focused on getting muscles that could land them on the cover of a magazine. Some of us just need to slim down a bit or tone up. Some of us just need to

strengthen our muscles and increase our flexibility for functional life. Some of us just need to create—and maintain—a fitness routine. And some of us need to regain a confidence in our body that makes us look and feel like we’re the person we want the world to see. How, then, should you define your success in the gym, when success is so subjective? Above all, success at the gym should be defined by your actual health and where YOU, as a unique individual, have started. THAT should be your guide and your gauge as you lay the foundation for your goals. Look at things objectively as you work through every minute of every workout and sweat it out. NATURALLY...

CBD 101 MYTHS. FACTS. SHOPPING LOCAL. Story By Liesel Schmidt | Photography by Bethany Obendorfer & Cyn Lowery

Since the legalization of hemp and CBD throughout much of the country, shops selling CBD products seem to be as common a sight as Starbucks. They’re on every street corner, offering everything from vape juices to oils and even home goods, citing the benefits of this plant derivative in treating a wide range of conditions as an alternative to traditional medications and pharmaceuticals and encouraging users to embrace all it has to offer. But what, really, is CBD? “CBD is from the hemp plant, which is the cousin of the marijuana plant,” explains Bethany Obendorfer, who opened Emerald City CBD in downtown Clarksville in late 2018. “Unlike marijuana, however, it does not get you high, as there is little to no THC, which is really what creates all of the negative side effects of marijuana. CBD, when it does contain THC, can only have a maximum amount

38 • VIP HEALTH & BEAUTY

of .3 percent; and the side effects are very mild. Those generally only occur when someone has taken too much, and it’s usually just drowsiness,” Obendorfer contends. A woman whose curly hair and dimpled smile could disarm even the biggest critic, Obendorfer might easily serve as the poster child for the alternative market, the vibrant tattoos forming a sleeve on her right arm and offering proof positive that she hardly sticks to the rules. But while others might have entered this market to push the line, Obendorfer does it for other reasons. “I started this business because I love helping people. I hear stories every day of how this plant is helping change people’s lives dramatically,” she says. “It’s good for so many things that people commonly suffer from, and now it’s accessible to them. I love being a part of that and being able to offer them relief.”

The question is this: Does it REALLY do anything beneficial, or is it just hype? In all actuality, CBD is far from a new thing, so long has it been in use. But it’s only now becoming more mainstream because of legalization; and because it’s become more accessible, the market has exploded with ways to utilize it and promote it to new users who might not have ever considered it an option. And while—as Obendorfer’s words would easily prove—there are many arguments that suggest it treats a wide range of health conditions, only ONE use has strong scientific data backing it: treatment for epilepsy. Even so, it’s seen some success in a few clinical trials with people suffering from ailments including pain and inflammation, PTSD and anxiety, Crohn’s disease, MS, and opioid withdrawal.

And Obendorfer is proud to be a part of the solution. Offering her wares to everyone from children to adults and even for use in pet care, Emerald City CBD stocks a large selection of CBD products including oils, topicals, edibles such as gummy rings and gummy bears, vape juices and cartridges, hemp flower, bath and body products, and home goods. It’s a controversial space to be in, to be sure; but for Obendorfer, the benefits she sees in it outweigh it all, and she’s hoping to plant a new seed. WEEKEND GETAWAY

All Bets On A Derby Weekend Story By Liesel Schmidt

SPRING 2019 • 41

Courtesy of Cameron Cone, Van Wagner Big Screen Network Churchill Downs: It’s the site of big history, big hats, and—of course—big races and big bets. Every minute brings big wins and big losses. Every second ticks toward big dreams. There’s nothing small here, nothing understated. The air is electric with anticipation, the atmosphere charged with potential energy just waiting to be released when the starting gun sets it all in motion. The ground is alive with blood, sweat, and tears; the dust littered with hopes—sometimes realized, sometimes dashed.

Whether you’re the jockey, the owner of the horse, or just someone in the crowd, the stakes are high. Literally. Thousands of dollars—millions, even—are won and lost here during the Kentucky Derby, an event so momentous that people plan their lives around it. It’s a transactional affair, with numbers running like ticker tapes on Wall Street, absurd-sounding names spoken with reverence and traded in conversation like playing cards. In the South, it’s not to be missed; and as countless masses flock to the historic grounds of Churchill Downs to become part of the action, we’ve got your guide to the perfect weekend—even if you’re not betting big.

WHERE TO STAY The Galt House Hotel

Regardless, there’s no denying that Churchill Downs holds an appeal unlike any other, commands a presence that puts the world at a standstill while the pounding of hooves, the panting of breaths, the laser focus of horse and rider seems to rise above the noise and chatter to become the only thing that people hear and see. Who will win, and who will lose?

Worn or torn garments, halter-tops, athletic wear, frayed or torn denim, and midriff tops not permitted.

There’s an art to betting, and we’ve got the basics: The first is a “win” wager. Betting a horse to win just means that the horse you’ve placed your bet on must win the race in order for you to win the wager. Next, is a “place” wager, which means that you’ve bet on a horse to finish in the top two. If your horse finishes first or second, you’re a winner! Betting a horse to “show” means betting on a horse to finish in the top three, and you win the wager if your horse finishes first, second, or third. The minimum bet for a win, place, or show wager is only $2. Exacta bets are more difficult. These are perfect for those whose have mastered the art of win, place, and show wagers. An exacta is more difficult but brings a higher payout. With an exacta, you select a minimum of two horses to finish first and second. These horses must finish first and second—in the order that you’ve selected them—for you to win. However, if picking two horses IN ORDER isn’t something you’re confident in, you can “box” your wager, which means you’ll still win if your horses finish in first and second—regardless of their order. The minimum bet is only $2.

Trifecta bets are the most difficult, so they yield a higher payout than any of the other bets. A trifecta is bet by selecting a minimum of three horses to finish in an exact order of first, second, and third. If they win following the order, you win the wager. As with an exacta bet, you can “box” your bet to increase your odds. The minimum bet is 50 cents, and you can bet a trifecta box for as little as $3.

MAN CAVE

To Beard

or Not To Beard... Story by Kellie Gunderman 48 • VIP HEALTH & BEAUTY

To beard or not to beard. Lately, that really is the question. And though beards, much like a woman's hair color or the shape of her eyebrows, is a matter of personal preference, we can't help but notice how this once expected "trend" is becoming a long-term statement of proclaimed masculinity all across America. Like a good suit, this is one fashion statement that just doesn't seem to be going out of style. So what is it about a beautiful face of hair that has men ditching the shaving cream and razors and opting for beard oil and combs instead? From a bit of manly scruff to a glorious look that seems to come straight out of a Game of Thrones episode, there is just something about a beard that makes men feel independent, adventurous and goodhumored. But let's jump back to the conversation of length. Once you've chosen to commit to growing a beard, where do you stop? The best way to choose the style of your beard is, believe it or not, based on the shape of your head. Of course, the decision will rest at your own chin in the end, but here is your guide to choosing the best beard for your face. OVAL HEAD Because your face is already symmetrically pleasing, you are in the best position to become a bit daring with your look. So take a risk! A little bushy on the sides and short

Beard Care Part of having a beard is maintenance. Did you know that there are many tools, products and even barbershops available to help keep your style looking fresh? Use products like beard oil and beard balm, and keep the hairs looking trained by running a boar bristle brush or comb through it. Combing also helps spread out the natural oils your skin produces, which keeps your beard looking shiny and healthy. Scissors are important for trimming the beard and mustache and getting rid of split ends, so make sure you have a good pair that is small enough and sharp enough to do the job right.

Keeping your beard clean will only require you to use a beard wash and softener a few times each week, which makes maintenance pretty easy. You will, however, need a razor and adjustable clippers to keep your neckline clean, the length and density of your beard where you want it, and the lines of your beard well defined on your face. Another option is to make regular trips to a barbershop! Try Stormin' Norman's Barbershop at 311 Drinkard Dr., Clarksville. They offer beard trims and deluxe beard trims. Call 931-919-2810 to book your appointment. SPRING 2019 • 49

on the bottom is a favorite style for you men. But short sides with more length can be just as attractive. The only thing you should be weary of are trims with sharp angles. ROUND HEAD/SQUARE HEAD For you boys, we're talking about beards with a captial B. Elongate your face by taking it strong & long! Shorten things up a bit on the sides and enjoy as much length as you can handle! OBLONG HEAD Did someone order their beard el naturale? A short bottom and full sides is best for adding a bit of width to a narrow jaw. TRIANGULAR HEAD You have a face that gravitates outward. Your wide jaw already creates a prominently masculine canvas, so no full beards for you. Keep things short, cropped and sculpted with regular trips to the man groomer. No matter what style you opt for, there is one thing that is for certain: Beards are a birthright. They are a symbol of maturity that became possible for you around the same time your voice began to deepen and (let's face it) the ladies started swooning. There is just something unique about a beard, and trust me: there are plenty of women who would agree with me. Want to know why? For starters, beards have been recognized, historically, as a symbol of strength, power and wisdom. Men with full beards are considered to be protectors. Now, not all women want a man to protect them... but there are plenty that do (myself included)! Again, there is no wrong answer! Choosing what kind of face to love is like choosing what shoes to buy or whether or not to get a tattoo. Every man (and woman) has their own ideas of what makes for an attractive, respectable and distinguished look. To beard or not to beard. The choice is yours and yours alone. (Well... you may also want to check with your lady!) Just keep in mind that if you do travel this road, all good things come in time and maintaining your new, luxurious look will require commitment and maintenance.
