(coworking + retail space) VENEZUELANS started surfing an economic crisis during the 1990s, and today they are facing a tsunami. Instead of sitting around waiting for jobs to come to them, citizens create their own opportunities, discovering new talents within themselves, or leave the country seeking for a better future. Roughly 4,000,000 Venezuelans have left the country, most of them highly educated professionals between 18 and 40 years old. Over 60% leave due to economic reasons or lack of work, but in the end it all comes down to people not being able to live the “normal adult life.”

PROJECT PROPOSAL

Design a coworking space for creative entrepreneurs in Venezuela to improve their quality of life by providing them business development opportunities. The project will be located in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, in the “new downtown,” an area that has been developed as an urban center with recreational locations, offices and stores. GOALS

1. Provide a space for entrepreneurs to start their businesses 2. Offer networking opportunities with major stakeholders 3. Create a space where the public can support local artists 4. Achieve the desired work-life balance 5. Access to a community of like-minded professionals 6. Incorporate biophilia to improve productivity CLIENT

A global technological hub, Wayra is the interface that connects Telefónica and the world’s innovators, supporting their projects as strategic partners to accelerate their businesses. USERS

The primary users of this space will be the emerging adults of Venezuela that are looking to thrive in creative careers. The lack of job opportunities in Venezuela has lead to an increasing number of entrepreneurs and businesses.

LOCATION

Venezuela is the northernmost country in South America. Its capital, Caracas, grew in economic importance during Venezuela’s oil boom in the early 20th century. The economic shift from primarily agricultural to almost completely dependent on oil production stimulated its fast development. Las Mercedes, is the largest district for shopping and leisures in Venezuela. With the cash and currency exchange controls in place, investors are placing their money on brick, making it a popular area for people in the city. The project will occupy part of the 8th, 9th, and 10th levels of the Torre Luxor, a recently completed multipurpose building.

EL ÑERU

Just like a collage, the culture f Venezuela has become a one-of-a-kind aesthetic, a uniquely pieced together process. After the Second World War, Venezuela was a destination for a substantial number of people from Europe, aiding refugees and displaced people who could not, or would not return to their homes. It became a country of possibilities, desire and freedom. People came looking for shelter and they found a Paraíso Terrenal (Earthly Paradise), where they found a sense of belonging, established their homes and made Venezuela a cosmopolitan center. Similar to Venezuela's cosmopolitan culture, "El Ñeru" evokes dimensionality, assembling together fractured forms from dissimilar, or similar components to create a unified whole. It is a place where different people that would not necessarily be associated with one another come together to make great things happen, intangible things that make an impact in the community and lead Venezuela back to being home to its people.

ARCHITECTURE

MUSE

ETHOS

Studio MK27 was founded by architect Marcio Kogan. The team’s architects, great admirers of the Brazilian modernist generation, seek to fulfill the task of rethinking and giving continuity to this iconic architectural movement. The studio values the simplicity of the design, extreme attention to details and finishes, use of pure volumes, and strong relations between the internal and external.

Sjana Elise Earp is a 24 year-old yoga-doing, adventure-seeking, sunshine-loving, oceanadoring, travel-enthusiast, happy-being, huggiving Australian girl. Sjana seeks to feel strong and capable, grounded and calm. She is a firm believer that everyone deserves to feel empowered and confident in their own skin. Her mission and purpose in life is to help others in finding enlightenment within themselves no matter what.

Just like spending an afternoon by the beach waiting for the sunset, the main sentiment produced by this coworking space is that of a calm mind. Interacting with nature by feeling the soothing summer breeze and listening to the melodic sound of waves helps us free our minds from worries and feel at ease with ourselves, finding inner peace. In the end, it’s all about simple living by thinking outside the box.

metanoia (residential loft)

AXEL AND ZOHAR SCHULTZ are a young couple that represent the perfect epitome of contrast. Born and raised in opposite ends of the world, they both possess very different personalities and traditions; introvert and extrovert, only child and youngest of seven siblings, modern and old soul, painter and writer. However, they both share profound love for the arts: music, novels, movies, sculptures. This love equals escape, equals liberation. Their art is their escape and finest expression, it is their way of connecting with their inner selves.

METANOIA

the journey of changing one’s mind, heart, self or way of life.

Lost in the New York state of mind, it is difficult to stop your head from getting caught in the fast pace. Surroundings become blurry and it is hard to stay grounded. Metanoia seeks to portray the desire of being freed from the city and to escape the external world. Chaos becomes order, worry becomes oblivion, complexity becomes simplicity.

color story

(culture and typology research) A project’s design is reflective of the culture in which it is placed, and before coming up with a concept, one should try to gain as much understanding of the culture as possible. At the same time, it is always important to understand what is going on in the marketplace- knowing what the competition is doing can give you a baseline for what’s appropriate and expected, but also in terms of finding ways to stand out from the crowd. This research represents a renovation project for a corporate office lobby and reception where the main goal was to freshen up the appearance of the space and bring it in line with today’s design standards.

london London, the capital and largest city of England and the United Kingdom, is considered a world cultural capital, with a diverse range of cultures and people, and more than 300 languages. Three of the top 10 museums and galleries in the world are in London, with 857 galleries in total. It is the world’s third busiest film production center, with over 14,000 shooting days for movies. London has over 17,000 music performances a year across over 300 venues, including the world’s most popular O2 arena.
