“Opportunity Youth”

In April 2016 , roughly 5.5 million youth, or 1 in 7, were classified as “Opportunity Youth”, young adults ages 16 to 24 who are out of school and not working largely due to systemic barriers to jobs and education. Tree Trust has been working directly with this population for years, but has adapted our services even further to better serve Opportunity Youth. Each of our five JobPrep programs are suited to meet the various needs of the young people we serve. Our programs serve participants who live in Hennepin, Dakota, and Washington counties, and St. Paul. Programs include YouthBuild, Youth and Young Adult Services, Young Adult Conservation Corps, the Summer Youth Employment Program, and the Community Support Program. The participants in Tree Trust’s JobPrep program overcome numerous and often compounding barriers to achieve success.

Community Forestry Community Forestry Programs educate and empower people of all ages to become good stewards of their local environment. Through tree distributions and planting events in community parks, elementary schools, and residential properties; students and community volunteers learn about and connect with the environment. We offer forestry programming in the metro area and throughout greater Minnesota, and we maintain particular focus on low canopy neighborhoods and distressed communities.

Celebrating 40 Years

In 2016, Tree Trust celebrated 40 years of transforming lives and landscapes in Minnesota, and celebrated our founders, Rolf Svendsen and Don Willeke, at our 40th Anniversary Celebration in the fall. At the event, Tree Trust was honored to provide awards to our long-standing partners, the City of St. Louis Park, Three Rivers Park District, and Hennepin County.

Funders, donors, volunteers, staff, and participants also helped us celebrate. Nearly 150 guests attended the event where they also heard from alumni participant Prescott Jones, who reflected on what Tree Trust has meant to him. The Founders themselves closed out the program with touching remembrances from their four decades of service.
