LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Reflecting on 2019, much of our work this past year positioned us well for the future as we continue growing our efforts to transform lives and landscapes. Some important forward-looking activities included: Hiring Kathy Sullivan as our first Chief Operating Officer, and promoting a long-term employee, Anders Hawes, to Chief Financial Officer; Launching a robust strategic planning assessment process involving our board, staff, outside stakeholders, and partners, to help us clearly and deliberately chart our mission, vision, and focus areas for the future; Conducting a comprehensive employee survey, resulting in feedback we are using to strengthen our position as a desirable employer in the Twin Cities nonprofit sector; and Moving our offices to a new location in St. Paul, providing the needed space to continue to efficiently and costeffectively grow our impact.

Turning to our program areas, I am proud of the results achieved in 2019, some of which are underscored in this report. One significant highlight, our direct involvement on the steering committee establishing a new registered tree care apprenticeship program, working with Apprenticeship Minnesota, proved especially valuable. This timely new initiative offers apprentices longterm career pathway options in the green industry while helping businesses fill positions with skilled candidates. We excitedly look forward to 2020 with a refreshed strategic direction launching during the year, strong programs benefitting youth and young adults in our community, and with gratitude for our donors, partners, volunteers, board and staff for joining us in this life-changing work.

“Tree Trust opened different career paths and opportunities for me. They taught me responsibility.” — Moeriyah Foots, member of Tree Trust YouthBuild

LANDSCAPE SERVICES Transforming Landscapes... Tree Trust Landscape Services provides professional tree care and landscape contracting. This social enterprise supports our programs, advances the greening of our community, and creates opportunities for green careers.

"Watching your tree care crew work was an eye-opening and gratifying experience. They weren't cutting down trees and taking them away. They were performing surgery. For us, the entire operation was a time of amazement and gratitude for their skills and the great results of their expertise." — Leone Medin and Vin Graziano, Lowry Gardens Condominiums

CAREERS IN ARBORICULTURE Learning the Ropes... Together with tree care industry partners and Apprenticeship Minnesota, Tree Trust launched a registered apprenticeship program in our Landscape Services department. An earnas-you-learn workforce training initiative, the registered apprenticeship is a successful model to build a pipeline of highly skilled arborists in a highdemand industry. Apprentices receive classroom instruction and on-the-job training supervised by an experienced arborist, for a total of 6,440 hours, including 500 hours devoted to safety. Mastering indemand skills, apprentices earn a nationally recognized credential upon completion of the three-year program.

“I’m grateful that Tree Trust chose to enroll me in the apprenticeship. I feel more confident and knowledgeable on the job. This apprenticeship fast-tracks training, which is a big reason I would recommend it to a fellow arborist.” — Dan Schmitter, Apprentice, Landscape Services Employee
