Van Horn’s Annual Pecan Dessert Contest

Van Horn, a town of 2,500 in Far West Texas, is home to pecan orchards

When the town looked for an activity to complement the annual Lighted Christmas Parade a few years ago, the Pecan Dessert Contest was born

Decorated for the holidays, the historic Hotel El Capitan was deemed the perfect location for the contest

Convention and Visitors Bureau employee, Brenda Hinojos, was charged with organizing the contest

Judges include local dignitaries including chefs, newspaper editors and pecan growers

Entries are judged on appearance and presentation, originality and creativity, taste and flavor, and ease of preparation and use of pecans

A cross-section of this small high desert community takes part; cash prizes are provided by the Town of Van Horn

This year, students in the local school’s culinary classes plan to take part
