Remembering the Armenian Genocide cuts across party lines

Elected representatives from all political stripes joined Toronto’s Armenian community and pointed to the parallels between the Armenian Genocide and what is happening in Artsakh today

Toronto’s Armenian community gathered at the Armenian Community Centre of Toronto on Sunday, April 23, 2023, to mark the 108th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The event, organized by the Armenian National Committee of Toronto (ANCT), was attended by several guests and dignitaries, including elected officials from all three levels of government, several mayoral hopefuls, and representatives of Armenian and other ethnic communities across the GTA.

The event’s Master of Ceremonies, Hrag Dadayan of the ANCT, welcomed guests and recognized dignitaries who entered the Centre’s main hall, accompanied by the Homenetmen Toronto Fanfare and flag-bearing Scouts troop. The Fanfare troop began the ceremony by playing the national anthems of Canada, Armenia, and Artsakh. Following the anthems, Dadayan acknowledged that Toronto is the traditional territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples. “The Armenian National Committee of Toronto stands in resolute solidarity with the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples in their demands for recognition, restitution, and continued autonomy,” Dadayan said in his welcoming remarks before inviting all to observe a moment of silence.

Matthews began his remarks by explaining that he had had the opportunity to visit Armenia and the Armenian Genocide Memorial at Tsitsernakeberd in Yerevan while he was working in the South Caucasus with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. “Visiting the [Armenian] Genocide memorial and museum shocked me since it made me ask myself, ‘How come I didn’t know about this? How come growing up in Canada, I didn’t know what happened to the Armenians?’” Since then, he said, he has had the opportunity to work closely with the Armenian-Canadian community, particularly in Montreal, in its quest for justice for the still unpunished crime.

After providing a brief background of the Armenian Genocide, Dadayan announced that the Armenian community of Canada would be celebrating the centennial of the arrival of the Georgetown Boys and Girls in June. “Our gathering here today, in this Centre of resistance, perseverance, and hope, unifying church, school, culture, and tradition, follows the footsteps of the Georgetown orphans who, against all odds, learned and later taught the Armenian language and are a testament of my people’s will to survive and prosper,” Dededyan said, before welcoming Toronto-Armenian violinist Nshan Papazian and pianist Maria Davoudian, who played a touching rendition of “Adana,” a song composed by famed Armenian musician Ara Gevorgyan.

Dadayan then introduced the event’s keynote speaker, Kyle Matthews, Executive Director of the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies at Concordia University. At Concordia, Matthews founded the annual AI and Human Rights Forum and the Digital Mass Atrocity Prevention Lab, which works to counter online

Matthews detailed the important roles Canada played in establishing Responsibility to Protect—the global political commitment to prevent genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity—and the International Criminal Court. “We really need to pay attention to what’s happening to Armenia today—I am talking about Nagorno-Karabakh, Artsakh. I cannot believe, and this is where Canada is deeply implicated, that in 2020, we [Canada] delivered drones to Turkey to fight ISIS, a group that was committing genocide of its minorities. Lo and behold, we find out that some of this technology was given to Azerbaijan to attack Armenians. This is unacceptable,” Matthews said, urging people to continue speaking out and to stand for justice for the people of Artsakh. “What happened 108 years ago should give us pause and reflection to take action today, to make ‘never again’ a reality,” he concluded.

MPP Babikian then shared a few words of gratitude and solidarity with members of his community. “As the son of this community and as the grandson of survivors of two genocides—the Armenian Genocide and the Greek-Pontian Genocide—I am humbled to stand with my colleagues in solidarity with you, committed to

an elected official, he is an emergency physician. In that capacity, he has been with many people in the last moments of their lives. “Even despite that, I still struggle to comprehend what it means for 1.5 million Armenian people to have lost their lives during the genocide… And what does that really mean, 1.5 million people? If we were to stand and say their names, every single one without pausing, taking a breath, or sleeping, it would take 18 days to remember and honour every single one of those people who passed in the worst possible way,” Shamji said.

Dadayan then invited members of the Toronto City Council to the stage. Councillors Brad Bradford (Beaches-East York; mayoral candidate), Josh Matlow (Toronto-St. Paul’s; mayoral candidate), Chris Moise (Toronto Centre), Jamaal Myers (Scarborough North), Jon Burnside (Don Valley East), and Nick Mantas (Scarborough-Agincourt) joined Shelley Caroll, Councillor for Don Valley North, who expressed her solidarity to the people of Artsakh, who have been blockaded for more than 130 days by Azerbaijan, and delivered greetings on behalf of Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie. Michael Chan, Deputy Mayor of Markham, and his council colleagues from York Region (Alan Ho, Markham Regional Councillor; Ritch Lau, Markham Ward 2 Councillor; Juanita Nathan, Markham Ward 7 Councillor) then addressed the audience with a heartfelt message of solidarity and support.

Melissa Lantsman, Deputy Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and MP for Thornhill, then took the stage to share her greetings on behalf of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition. “Even as a seasoned speaker, it is difficult to put into words my thoughts about the unspeakable tragedies that occurred during the Armenian Genocide. And even more than a hundred years later, we are still at a loss for words to describe the horrors, the cruelty, the loss of human life that took place during that time, and the fact that we still have to fight to make it known—that, in itself, is a tragedy,” she said. New Democratic Party (NDP) Leader Jagmeet Singh’s message to the community was subsequently read by Dadayan.

Han Dong, MP for Don Valley North and Co-Chair of the Canada-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group, shared a message of solidarity and hope with the community. “We must honour the memory of the victims by committing ourselves to build a more just and compassionate world,” he said.

Michael Parsa, MPP for Aurora—Oak Ridges— Richmond Hill and Ontario’s Minister of Children, Community, and Social Services, was joined on stage by his colleagues from the provincial Ontario PC caucus (Robin Martin, MPP for Eglinton-Lawrence; Billy Pang, MPP for Markham—Unionville; Aris Babikian, MPP for Scarborough-Agincourt; Logan Kanapathi, MPP for Markham—Thornhill; and David Smith, MPP for Scarborough Centre). “Today, we stand with the

fighting injustice wherever and whenever it happens… I want to thank the Canadian people for their steadfast support of Armenian Genocide survivors from the time it happened. I am grateful to them for their contributions to help the survivors, the orphans of the Genocide,” Babikian said before urging elected officials at all levels of government to “follow in the footsteps of our forebears who stood up for justice” to prevent another genocide in Artsakh at the hand of Azerbaijan.

Before delivering greetings on behalf of the New Democratic Party of Ontario, the Official Opposition in Ontario, Tom Rakocevic, MPP for Humber River-Black Creek, acknowledged MPP Babikian’s commitment to his community and people. “I know we stand on opposite sides of the Legislature, but your passion on this issue is unmatched, and I want to recognize that,” Rakocevic said. Adil Shamji, MPP for Don Valley East, was then joined by Mitzie Hunter, MPP for Scarborough—Guildwood, Deputy Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, and mayoral candidate for the City of Toronto. Shamji explained that, apart from being

School board trustees from the Toronto and York Region Public and Catholic Boards then took the stage. Trustee Shelley Laskin (TDSB, Ward 8) delivered official remarks on behalf of the trustees, touching upon the importance of education in preventing future crimes against humanity.

The ceremony was attended by a total of seven Toronto mayoral candidates: Councillor Josh Matlow, Councillor Brad Bradford, former Deputy Mayor Ana Bailão, MPP Mitizie Hunter, former MP Olivia Chow, former Police Chief Mark Saunders, and newspaper columnist Anthony Furey. Many submitted a video message that will be posted online. Many other honoured guests and longtime friends of the Toronto Armenian community also made time to join the commemoration, including former Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, David Warner, and award-winning Armenian-Canadian director, Atom Egoyan. The event concluded with announcements by the Master of Ceremonies and the laying of wreaths and carnations at the Armenian Community’s Armenian Genocide Monument (“Revival” by ArmenianCanadian artist Arto Tchakmakjian).

Էջմիածին, Սարդարապատ, Վերնիսաժ ու եղանք մեր վարժարանի նախկին տնօրէնին տունը եւ մեր դասարանի անցեալի դասատուին տունը: Այս պտոյտի ընթացքին, ուրախ եմ, որ առաջին անգամ Grand Candy-էն բոնչիկ փորձեցի եւ Երեւանի յայտնի պուլպուլակներէն (ցայտաղբիւրներէն) պաղ ջուր խմեցի: Ընդհանուր առմամբ այս այցելութիւնը Հայաստան անմոռանալի փորձառութիւն մըն էր։ Անհամբեր կը սպասեմ նոր առիթի, երբ կարենամ ետ վերադառնալ։ Գայանէ Թ.

Թէեւ առաջին անգամը չէր, որ Հայաստանը կ'այցելէի, կարելի է ըսել, որ այս ճամբորդութիւնը բոլորովին տարբեր էր նախկիններէն: Երկու շաբթուան ընթացքին այցելեցինք հինգ մարզեր եւ բազմաթիւ գիւղեր ու քաղաքներ, որոնցմէ ամէն մէկը իւրայատուկ էր իր կլիմայով ու տեսարժան վայրերով: Տեսանք լեռնաշղթաներ, զանազան կենդանիներ ու տեսարանները, որոնք հիանալի էին: Բացի ասոնցմէ, տեսանք բազմաթիւ եկեղեցիներ ու արձաններ: Անոնց քանդակները այնքան գեղեցիկ ու մանրամասն էին, որ բառերով չեմ կրնար զանոնք նկարագրել: Յայտնի է ինչքան զգուշութեամբ աշխատած էին քանդակագործները, եւ ամէն քանդակը իր պատմութիւնը ունի: Առիթը ունեցանք այցելելու տարբեր արհեստաւորներու եւ սորվելու իրենց արհեստներուն մասին: Ուրախ եմ, որ առիթը ունեցայ համտեսելու համեղ ուտելիքներ, որոնք յաճախ հնարաւորութիւնը չեմ ունենար ուտելու: Տպաւորիչն էր նաեւ այն ժամանակը, որ ընկերներուս հետ անցուցի: Տարիներ

անց, երբ վերյիշեմ ճամբորդութիւնս, ամէնէն շատը պիտի յիշեմ ընկերներուս կատակները, հիւրանոցի արկածները եւ այն վայրերը, որոնք միասին այցելեցինք ու վայելեցինք մեր ազատ ժամերուն: Ալիս Պ. Թորոնթօ ապրելով, բոլոր կեանքս տեսած եմ տափակ դաշտավայր: Հայաստան երթալով, լեռնային բնավայրը ամէնէն տպաւորիչն էր: Մայր Հայաստանի արձանէն էր, որ առաջին անգամ տեսայ Արարատ լեռը: Նկարներով տեսած էի, բայց աչքերով տեսնելը բոլորովին ուրիշ զգացումներ տուաւ: Երբ մենք Արարատեան դաշտէն ելանք դէպի հարաւ, Նախիջեւանի մօտ, բազմաթիւ լեռնաշղթաներ տեսնելը հիանալի էր: Ուրիշ տպաւորիչ դէպք մը, երբ այցելեցի Երեւանի թատերասրահը, ուր դիտեցի Խաչատրեանի «Գայանէ» թատերապարը: Հայկական արուեստագէտներու գործերը շատ չես տեսներ Թորոնթոյի օտար թատերասրահներու մէջ,

մանկապարտէզէն ի վեր կը յաճախեմ ՀՕՄ-ի Ամէնօրեայ վարժարանը եւ այս տարի Աստուծոյ կամքով պիտի աւարտեմ դպրոցս: Այս տարիներու ընթացքին միշտ լսած, կարդացած եւ սորված

եմ իմ ուսուցիչներէս

Լիբանանահայ կիթառահար Մկրտիչ Միքայէլեանը հիացուց թորոնթոհայութիւնը

Կազմակերպութեամբ Համազգային հայ կրթական եւ մշակութային «Գլաձոր» մասնաճիւղին, 16 ապրիլին, Թորոնթոյի Հայ կեդրոնի սրահէն ներս տեղի ունեցաւ լիբանանահայ կիթառահար Մկրտիչ Միքայէլեանի մենահամերգը: Ձեռնարկին բացման խօսքը արտասանեց «Գլաձոր» մասնաճիւղի ատենապետ, ՀՕՄ-ի Ամէնօրեայ վարժարանի տարիներու վաստակաւոր ուսուցիչ Յասմիկ Պապեանը: Ողջունելէ ետք հանդիսատեսները, Պապեան յիշեցուց բոլորին, որ Համազգայինը այս տարի կը նշէ իր հիմնադրութեան 95-ամեակը ու մասնաճիւղին բոլոր ձեռնարկներն ու նախաձեռնութիւնները նուիրուած են կրթական եւ մշակութային միութեան յոբելեանին: «Համազգայինը մեծ դերակատարութիւն ունի նոր սերունդը կառչած պահելու ազգային ինքնութեան, հաղորդ դարձնելու հայ մշակոյթին եւ անոր ճամբով՝ պատրաստելու յանձնառու, տիպար երիտասարդներ: Լիբանանէն հրաւիրուած Մկրտիչ Միքայէլեանի այսօրուան մենահամերգը

արտայայտութիւնը ըլլայ մեր առաքելատիպ հայրերուն, որոնք եղան վշտագին պահակները հայ ժողովուրդին ինքնուրոյն դիմագիծը պահելու եւ զայն ապահով կերպով փոխանցելու գալիք սերունդներուն», ըսաւ Պապեան, որմէ ետք սեղմ գիծերու մէջ ներկայացուց Միքայէլեանին կենսագրականը: Լիբանանէն հրաւիրուած կիթառահարը ծնած է Պէյրութ ու աւարտած Երեւանի Կոմիտասի անուան պետական երաժշտանոցը՝ ստանալով դասական կիթառի մագիստրոսի կոչումը: 2022ին արժանացած է Կիթառի համաշխարհային կազմակերպութեան Պատուոյ դեսպան

Ազգանուէր վերապատուելիին յիշատակը անթառամ կը մնայ

աշխատանքին։ ՀՕՄ-ը քաջածանօթ էր վերապատուելիին կատարած հայրենասիրական եւ մարդասիրական աշխատանքներուն։ Ուրախ ենք, որ 2022-ին, «Ռուբինա» մասնաճիւղը, իր տարեկան տօնակատարութեան ընթացքին գնահատագիրով մը պատուեց վերապատուելի Եսայի Սարմազեանը իր անսակարկ ծառայութեան համար թորոնթոհայ գաղութէն ներս, նաեւ իր իրագործած բարեսիրական եւ ազգային աշխատանքներուն գծով: Ան իւրայատուկ էր իր ազգանուէր գործունէութիւններով, տարիներու

ընթացքին ձեռք բերած անսակարկ ծառայութեամբ զանազան մարզերու մէջ։ 2002 թուականին, Քեսապի նուիրուած ՀՕՄ-ի «Տոհմիկ օր»-ուան

տօնախմբութեան, ան կազմակերպիչ յանձնախումբի ատենապետի

պաշտօնը վառած էր։ Ան նաեւ իբր հոգեւոր հովիւ, ՀՕՄ-ի բոլոր ձեռնարկները

քաջալերած է իր ներկայութեամբ։

Վեր. Եսայի Սարմազեանի յուղարկաւորութեան կը յիշենք իր մխիթարական

եւ քրիստոնէական պատգամը, ուր ան յաճախ կ՚ըսէր. «Կեանքը կարճ է եւ անստոյգ, Մահը իրական եւ անխուսափելի, Պատճառը մեղքն է, Լուծումը՝ Յիսուս»։ Վերապատուելին լուծումին քաջածանօթ էր եւ ամբողջ կեանքի ընթացքին իր քարոզներով քրիստոնէական,

այդ հաւատքով ան կը բաժնուի մեզմէ միանալու իր սիրելի տիկնոջ` Սեզային, ծնողքին, իր եղբօր՝ վեր. Յովհաննէսին, քոյրերուն՝ Եղիսաբեթին, Էլիզին եւ իր փրկչին՝ Յիսուս Քրիստոսի։ Վերապատուելիին յիշատակը անթառամ կը մնայ։ Աստուած հոգին

Յովհաննէս Սարմազեանին եղբայրը։ Սակայն խնամիական կապէն անդին առանձնաշնորհումը ունեցած եմ իր առաջնորդութիւնը վայելելու, երբ իր քաջալերանքով իբրեւ Քրիստոնէական ջանից միութեան անդամ, պատանեացի առաջնորդի պաշտօն ստանձնած եմ Պէյրութի Էմմանուէլ եկեղեցւոյ մէջ, ուր ինք կը պաշտօնավարէր որպէս հոգեւոր հովիւ։ Բայց առաւելաբար անցնող չորս տասնամեակներուն Թորոնթոյի Հայ աւետարանական եկեղեցւոյ մէջ, ինչպէս ներկաներէն շատեր, հոգեւոր եւ ազգաշունչ քարոզներով եւ պատգամներով վերապատուելի Եսայի Սարմազեանի օրհնութիւններն ու ջամբած հայեցի ու քրիստոնէական դաստիարակութիւնը վայելած եմ։ Բոլորիս ծանօթ է, որ վերապատուելին այն յատուկ հովիւներէն մին էր, որուն համար համայնքի շրջանակը միայն Աւետարանական եկեղեցւոյ շրջափակէն ներս չէր սահմանուեր, այլ՝ ան ամբողջ թորոնթոհայ գաղութի հոգեւոր, մշակութային, ազգային եւ կրթական յառաջխաղացքով հետաքրքրուած, մտահոգուած եւ գործօն մասնակցութիւն բերած հոգեւոր մշակ մըն էր։ Մասնաւորաբար,

ենք Համազգայինին ու ՀՕՄ-ին, որպէսզի նոր մասնակից անդամներով աւելի ճոխացնենք մեր ընկերակցութեան թիւն ու գործունէութիւնը։ Գրեթէ հայկական բոլոր տօները եւ եկեղեցական տաղաւարները կը նշենք։ Մայրերու եւ հայրերու տօնին առթիւ, որպէս տիպար մայրեր ու հայրեր, ընտրեալները կը պատուենք։ Կը նշենք մեր անդամներուն տարեդարձները, իրենք ալ իրենց կարգին սրտաբուխ նուիրատուութիւն ու հիւրասիրութիւն կ’ընեն մեր ընկերակցութեան։ Երբեմն պտոյտներ կը կազմակերպենք մեր երէցներուն, բոլորն ալ բարձր տրամադրութեամբ կը մասնակցին տուեալ պտոյտներուն։ Այս տարի Մայրերու օրուան առիթով ճաշարան պիտի տանինք երէցները։ Մենք պտոյտներ ալ կը կազմակերպենք,

եւ իրենց հանգստութիւնը խորհելով կ’ուզենք իրենց առանձնութենէն դուրս հանելով հոս բերել, որպէսզի անոնք իրենց առօրեայ մինակութեան փոխարէն,

յատուկ փոխադրակառք կը յատկացնենք։ Մեր նպատակը երէցներուն օգնելն է, անոնք ալ իրենց կարգին նորեկներուն կ’օգնեն, կ’ուրախանան եւ կ’ուրախացնեն։ Իրենց ուրախութիւնը տեսնելով ես ալ կ’ուրախանամ եւ նոր վարչութեան հետ նորանոր ծրագիրներ կը մշակենք։ Մենք հիւրեր ալ կ’ունենանք, որոնք կարճ դասախօսութիւններով օգտակար գիտելիքներ կը փոխանցեն մեր անդամներուն, այսպէս օրինակ՝ հոգեբուժներ, բժիշկներ, ատամաբուժներ, սննդականոնի մասնագէտներ, իրավաբաններ, հաշուագէտներ, մարզիչներ եւ այլ մասնագէտներ, երեք շաբաթը մէկ, դասախօսութիւններու հրաւիրելով կը փորձենք նոր գիտելիքներով օգտակար դառնալ անոնց։ Դժբախտաբար շատեր կը կարծեն, որ երէցներու խմբակին մասնակցելով պարտաւորութիւններ պիտի ունենան, ընդհակառը՝ մեր վարչականներուս ուսերուն կ’իյնայ պարտականութիւնը, իսկ իրենց կը մնայ հոս՝ իրենց տան մէջ ըլլալու զգացումով ուրախանալն ու հանգստանալը։

Յիսուն տարեկանը բոլորած հայորդիները կրնան անդամակցիլ մեր ընկերակցութեան։ Դժբախտաբար, երբեմն շատեր կը մերժեն մասնակցիլ, որովհետեւ անոնք կը կարծեն, թէ ծերերու, խնամքի կարիք ունեցողներու եւ անկարողներու ընկերկցութիւն մըն է․․․մինչդեռ երէցը հասուն, գիտակից, փորձառու, արդարամիտ եւ ընկերասէր այն անձնաւորութիւնն է, որ բոլորին անդորրը կը պահէ։ Տարիքը

A TORONTO ARMENIAN EXPERIENCE: TWO BROTHERS HELP OTHERS FIND THEIR IDENTITY By

Emotionally distant. This is a great way to describe my Armenian friends and classmates growing up and, quite honestly, until today. I was pulled out of Armenian day school after the first grade. This left me as a bit of a local vagabond when it came to the community ties my parents tried so hard to establish. I started second grade in my local city public school, and from there forward, I saw less and less of those friends I found in nursery and first.

The immersion into American culture began; the learning of the Armenian language ended. Some years later, a husky Sebouh at ten years old squeezes into a chair intended for a 7- or 8-year-old in Saturday school. I was quite literally affixed to the classroom to catch up on learning Armenian due to the abrupt end of my formal education. Needless to say, I was uncomfortable with my lack of knowledge among children much younger than me, and I was pulled from class shortly thereafter.

Future encounters with members of the first-grade class that I had left behind were few and far between. Sometimes at a random Armenian dance or New Year’s Eve extravaganza, I would hear, “Hey, look. It’s Sebouh. Where have you been?” Regretfully, I did not form such a tight bond with that group.

In my teens, I joined Homenetmen and the Armenian Youth Federation (AYF) in Watertown, Massachusetts; that helped. I was back! I had lived five miles away from where all my peers grew up. I dropped back in, but it just wasn’t the same. My Armenian was not as strong as theirs, and I didn’t have the friendship history, but I moved through the ranks of Homenetmen in tandem with some of them, tried reading the language, and am proud of the conversational Armenian skills I possess today.

Lately, I have been trying to be more aware of who God guides me toward; I want to be conscious of those ships that pass by because, well–as a 40-year-old married man with a child, time is precious. I would much rather hold onto and cultivate a relationship with someone now where it makes the most sense. I am finding my identity today. I am finding my identity always. People, these days, seem to be continuously exploring theirs.

Enter Razmik Tchakmakian (the last name is plastered in my mind from when we originally met at AYF Camp Haiastan in Franklin, Massachusetts). He goes by Raz now, but back then, he was a shy 10-year-old camper, and I was his counselor in a new setting. During my recent visit to Toronto, Razmik vividly recalled, “At camp, you really made me feel at home because I was the only one attending from Toronto.” I remember him as an innocent and well-mannered little boy. This little boy has grown to become a creator aimed at preserving and furthering the Armenian cause.

I joined Razmik at The Oud & the Fuzz to share in his company and sip on a drink. The last time I saw him was back in 2015 when we crossed paths in Yerevan minutes before System of a Down mesmerized an electrified audience on the rainy eve of the centennial anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. That historic concert lives forever in our collective souls. Those brief moments with Raz left a lasting impression on me, and I started to follow his work on social media from afar. I was motivated to get to know him on a deeper level; his artful nature had left me intrigued.

Years later, we meet again, and it’s like we never parted ways. It felt more authentic than when I see friends here at home in my own community. I can just be me, no pretext–no weight of who I was, just who I am today. I express my gratitude for this to Razmik.

Raz has a vibrant yet calm demeanor. He gently makes his way to the bar to fix me a drink. While sipping on his handcrafted beverage—Armenian apricot juice, brandy, lemon juice topped with a fresh lemon rind—he inquired, “Are you involved in the Armenian community now?” I explained how I had been in my past and how frankly now with a focus on a small family and enduring my fair share of challenges, I hardly find the time. I mentioned that I started coaching my son at Homenetmen soccer practice this winter—baby steps. Razmik’s mission to share the “Armenian experience” takes a certain vision. I guess this is why I respect what he has been able to create as a young Armenian businessman. He is creating. He is not afraid to be himself, and this inspires me in a way I have yet to fully understand.

At his restaurant, you glance at the décor, and it seems so familiar. It is authentic yet subtle enough to pique others’ interest. Affixed to the walls is a smattering of some Armenian and other popular vinyl (paying homage to their humble beginnings of the combination record store and café, Antikka). All this opposes a beautiful Oud hung in the parlor–signifying some of the traditional Armenian vibes that fill the space on a nightly basis.

As Raz mentally prepares for the upcoming weekend, we discuss a range of topics, from being a restauranteur and entrepreneur to a member of the Greater Toronto Armenian community. He mentioned getting some support from community members but would certainly welcome more. His day typically starts just after noon. After a long winter, he has a positive outlook on the busy spring and summer ahead. Recounting the challenges faced at The Oud & the Fuzz, especially during the pandemic, he is grateful to be where they are now. Having survived those turbulent times, he and his brother Shaunt Raffi, find themselves stronger and better off for it. Their endurance is a symbol of our collective Armenian history and inherent ability to sustain.

The second night in a row, we meet at Tapestry, their latest space that inspires creative expression. A warm embrace immediately tugs at me, along with an overwhelming feeling of family and brotherhood. At Tapestry (a former jazz club), Raz and Shaunt added their personal touches with a new mural and a shortened, more intimate bar to make sufficient space on the dance floor. Tonight, they hosted guest DJs, a trio of talent cutting tracks of what I recognized to be tribal beats for all to enjoy until 2 a.m.

Earlier that evening, with a gentle smile, I mentioned to Razmik, “You’re like the brother I never had.” This, my last evening spent with Razmik, our collective presence and affiliation seemed to have subconsciously blended into a tapestry of their own.

This evening was therapeutic for me. It demonstrated Armenians’ innate ability to create. We, as an Armenian collective, must always honour our roots and find inspiration to create due to the sad and destructive reality we often find ourselves in. Creating a vision and a space for all to share equally is not an easy task. Building relationships and finding a sense of belonging is not an easy road to travel. Razmik and Shaunt Raffi are paving the way and creating a reason for people of various backgrounds to realize the importance of their creative expression. Exemplified by the artistry that passes through the doors of these spaces they create; they are tapping into a sea of talent available and giving them a voice. Whether they know it or not, they are helping people find their identity. They even inspired a middleaged man in Boston to write this article.

Canadian Children’s Opera Company to premiere Armenian-Canadian opera

The Canadian Children’s Opera Company (CCOC) recently announced the return of its annual main stage production with its newest and 14th opera commission, “The Nightingale of a Thousand Songs,” by Juno awardwinning composer Serouj Kradjian and Dora award-winning librettist Marjorie Chan. The opera is based on an Armenian fairy tale, “Hazaran Blbul.”

The world premiere of “The Nightingale of a Thousand Songs” will be performed by and for young people and audiences of all ages from June 9 to 11, 2023, at the Lyric Theatre at North York’s Meridian Arts Centre.

“The story follows the journey of two siblings, Leah and Ari, as they emerge from a tragedy in their homeland. They embark on an adventure to find the nightingale of a thousand songs to bring back life and joy to their world. Along the way, the children remember their lost friends and family and face many challenges and obstacles,” the CCOC

said in a published statement.

The opera will be performed by 70 young people aged seven to 18 in English, Armenian, and Arabic.

soprano and CCOC alumna Lynn Isnar will sing in the role of the Nightingale. CCOC Music Director Teri Dunn, will lead a professional chamber orchestra, including the duduk. “[This] ancient Armenian double-reed wind instrument has been compared to the human voice in its expressiveness and ability to convey deep emotion. The duduk will add an extra layer of depth and meaning to the performance with its hauntingly warm tone, evoking the rich cultural heritage of Armenia and immersing audiences in an unforgettable musical experience that will reflect both Armenian and Western sonorities and

musical traditions,” a part of the statement read.

Canadian pianist and composer Serouj Kradjian was inspired to create a work representing the rich culture and music that unites the Caucasus and the Middle East. The production team features director Julie McIsaac, designer Jung-Hye Kim, lighting designer Mikael Kangas, and Armenian-Canadian visual artist Amy Kazandjian as creative and cultural director, to create a unique expression

and celebration of Armenian culture, accessible and intended for young people and families to enjoy.

Creative and cultural director, Amy Kazandjian, believes that though ‘The Nightingale of a Thousand Songs’ speaks to the Armenian experience, one can easily draw parallels to other recent and past atrocities and significant events. “Our aim is to engage in meaningful conversations with the CCOC choristers and audiences about genocide, while making an important connection to our Canadian roots. Canada was ‘built’ on the (stolen) ancestral lands of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, and as non-indigenous Canadians, we hold an important role in the ongoing recognition of Indigenous history and its active reparation. Through this production, we hope to facilitate a deeper understanding of cultural exchange and the complexities of our shared (human) history and create a compelling experience for audiences of all ages.”

Housing prices are rising due to a tight inventory, resulting in buyers paying more than market value. This trend contributes to the upward pressure on house prices, and upsizing has become a luxury, with mortgage rates close to 7 percent.

While buyers may wonder whether to wait until summer, the market is likely to stay the same. Therefore, it is best to act now before prices rise further. Despite high prices, there are still opportunities to find a great deal on a home by staying informed and being prepared to act quickly.

As a first-time homebuyer in Canada, you should keep ten things in mind:
