էի մեր աշակերտներուն, որպէսզի

անոնք լուսանկարեն եւ իմաստաւորեն

Թորոնթոյի Հայ կեդրոնի այն բոլոր անկիւնները, որոնք իրենց համար մեր պայքարելու եւ գոյատեւելու ոգին կը խորհրդանշեն: Թէեւ ամէն աշակերտ

մը նկար ընտրած էր, ուզեցի

հատ, որպէսզի տեսնէք,

Ես հպարտ եմ մեր երիտասարդներով, որոնք հայրենիքէն դուրս հայրենասէր կը մեծնան շնորհիւ նախ՝ իրենց ծնողներուն եւ յետոյ՝ իրենց համար սփիւռքի մէջ Հայաստան մը ստեղծած ղեկավարութեան: Ահա, ինչպէս տունը, եկեղեցին, կեդրոնը եւ ի վերջոյ դպրոցը միատեղ՝ հայ երիտասարդին համար կը դառնան յարատեւ պայքարի, գոյատեւման եւ ստեղծագործելու

ապրող եւ շնչող վայրեր: Կը տեսնենք

իրենց լուսանկարներէն, թէ ինչպէ՞ս

երիտասարդները բարձր կը գնահատեն

մեր անցեալն ու ներկան եւ հիմա

իրենք՝ որպէս ջահակիր, կը լուսաւորեն

ապագան:

Ես հպարտ եմ անոնցմով, որովհետեւ

կը տեսնեմ, թէ այս սուրբ շրջապատը

կը շարունակէ ունենալ այն նոյն

ազդեցութիւնը, որ ունեցած էր իմ վրայ

որպէս սոյն վարժարանի աշակերտ եւ

համայնքի կամաւոր

որ գրադարանի կարեւորութիւնն ու

ճամբան սորվեցայ: Որպէս չափահաս, կը հանդիպէի այն տարիներուն

գրադարանի պատասխանատու, շատ

սիրելի պարոն Ռոստոմ Եղոյեանին։

Անոր անհատ գիտելիքներէն եւ

տեղեկութիւններէն ոգեւորուած, անպայման գիրքով մը կը մեկնէի։

Տարիներու ընթացքին, ամէն մէկ

գիրք իր յատուկ ազդեցութիւնը կամ

օգուտը ունեցած է եւ կը շարունակէ

ունենալ։ Որոշ գիրքեր օգտագործեցի

յօդուածներու համար, այլ գիրքեր՝

ուսումնասիրութիւններու։ Սակայն, այն գիրքերը, որոնք ներշնչման աղբիւր

դարձան եւ բառերը կեանքիս համար

եղան անկիւնադարձային, արժանացան

այլ մակարդակի գնահատանքի։

Այն գիրքերէն մէկը Գարեգին Նժդեհի

յիշեմ այդ պահը, երբ 2001 թուականի

կիրակի առաւօտ մը, պարոն Ռոստոմ՝

տեսնելով զիս, ցատկեց տեղէն եւ մեծ

ժպիտով ձեռքով կանչեց իր քով եւ ըսաւ.

Tens of thousands of people have died, and more than one hundred thousand others were injured in catastrophic earthquakes that ripped through Turkey and Syria on Feb. 6. Considered to be the most powerful and destructive earthquake to hit the region in at least a century, as of March 1, more than 53,500 deaths were confirmed: more than 45,000 in Turkey, and more than 8,400 in Syria, making it the fifth-deadliest earthquake of the 21st century.

At least 13 ethnic Armenians died as a result of the earthquake. Mirna Minasian Tenekedjian and her son Alber, were killed in Aleppo in the destruction. In Turkey, Sami Tabash, Ayda Tabash, Alex Tabash, Mariam Karatash, Dshkhun MesropyanBalikyan, Armik Mesropyan, Mesrop Mesropyan, Baydzar Silahlin, Antoine Horoz, Zilan Tigris, and Yohannes Karolina Kap were killed.

Armenian Relief Society’s (ARS) appeal for earthquake relief

The ARS was quick to set up a relief fund for earthquake relief. “The ARS expresses its solidarity and lends its support to the Syrian Armenian Community, which finds itself amid another challenge to overcome,” the 113-year-old organization with chapters across the globe said in a statement on the day of the earthquake.

Mirna Minasian Tenekedjian, who, along with her son Alber, was killed as a result of the earthquake, was a dedicated member of the Armenian Relief Cross (ARS) of Syria.

“The ARS always remains on the front line and allegiant to its mission, especially when the Armenian nation is threatened by disaster. Once again, we appeal for action to Armenians worldwide, all ARS entities, donors, and supporters to take the necessary steps and extend a helping hand to our brethren affected by this severe earthquake,” the statement concluded.

The Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) matching fund

AGBU has mobilized its team on the ground in Syria and looks to its global donor community to support emergency efforts starting by rebuilding homes in Aleppo and assessing other urgent and immediate needs. Armen-Ontario/AGBU Toronto is immediately donating $10,000 to support these efforts.

“In the past, your donations have been very generous, and we thank you for it. Your support is needed again and will have a direct and meaningful impact on the lives of Armenians,” AGBU Toronto said in a statement. The benevolent organization’s Toronto chapter will match donations up to another $10,000.

Following the destruction on Feb. 6, Rev.

Dr. Haroutune Selimian, the President of the Armenian Evangelical Community of Syria reported that the Armenian Evangelical Bethel Church in Aleppo immediately acted to help the community. “People gripped by fear and left homeless rushed to the streets, and more than 350 families found shelter in the halls and courtyard of Bethel Church. The Armenian Evangelical Community of Syria, with the financial support of AMAA, and the encouragement of the Union of the Armenian Evangelical Churches in the Near East, was one of the first respondents to the disaster with direct material support and taking care of the immediate and basic needs, along with moral support and prayers,” Selimian said Donate to AMAA’s Canadian affiliate, the AMAC at amacnews.org/#donate.

The Armenian Prelacy of Canada

Heeding His Holiness Aram I’s call for support, Canada’s Prelate, His Grace Fr. Archbishop Tcharian, has urged the Armenian Canadian faithful and members to support the Armenian people of Syria through the Prelacy. “We express our deepest condolences to all [the loved ones of the] Armenians who died in Syria and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” the Prelacy said in a statement Donate to the Armenian Prelacy of Canada at armenianprelacy.ca/donate.

Կաղանդի ուրախ մթնոլորտը, խրախճանքը եւ փոխանակուած նուէրներու հրճուանքը անցած էին, իսկ մենք՝ թորոնթոհայերս, անհամբեր, Համազգայինի «Գլաձոր» մասնաճիւղի Գրական յանձնախումբին խոստացած կաղանդչէքին կը սպասէինք եւ վստահ էինք, որ այդ նուէրը անմոռանալի պահեր պիտի շնորհէր մեզի՝ սպասողներուս։ Համազգայինի Գրասէրներու խմբակի հաւաքներու շարքին՝ «Կաղանդչէք»-ը տեղի ունեցաւ կիրակի, 29 յունուար 2023-ին, Համազգայինի «Յ. Մանուկեան» գրադարանէն ներս, ուր մեծ թիւով գրասէրներ եկած էին անգամ մը եւս թարմացնելու սոյն Նոր տարուան անգին յուշերը։ Գրադարանին ձախ անկիւնը կարմրականաչաւուն, հայկական զարդանախշերով հիւսուած ծածկոցով ծածկուած սեղանին վրայ տեղադրուած միրգերը, չիր ու չամիչը, քաղցրեղէններն ու հայկական զարդերը ներկաները կամայակամայ փոխադրեցին Հայաստան աշխարհ, ուր հայաբոյր Կաղանդի «Կաղանդչէք»-ը սկսաւ մարմնաւորուիլ գրասէրներուն աչքին առաջ։ Բարի գալուստի խօսքով հանդէս եկաւ Աննա Մարիա Մուպայէտ եւ ըսաւ. «Այսօր պիտի փորձենք մեր առօրեայ հեւքէն ու հայ ազգը պատած մտատանջութիւններէն քանի մը վայրկեան անջատուիլ, պտոյտ մը կատարելով հայ գրականութեան էջերուն մէջ եւ կեանքի կոչելով Կաղանդի, Ծնունդի կամ Ամանորի

նիւթը շօշափող ստեղծագործութիւններու

խմբակի «Կաղանդչէք» հաւաքը

կորած հին օրերու իրիկուն մըն է, որ կը նկարագրուի, ոմանք ալ, ինչպէս Երուանդ Օտեան, հարց կու տան, թէ ի՞նչն է նորը Նոր տարուան մէջ։ Մուշեղ Իշխան իր նամակին մէջ Կաղանդ պապային կը դիմէ եւ կը խնդրէ, որ ան Մասիս սարին տակ անիւ դնէ եւ զայն քշէ դէպի հայրենիք։ լսէք այսօր, կը ներկայացնէ հարիւր տարիներու ընթացքին գրուած արեւելահայ, արեւմտահայ եւ սփիւռքահայ ստեղծագործութիւններու համադրում մը, ուր անկասկած պիտի հանդիպիք նորութիւններու։ Ուշի ուշով մտիկ ըրէք ներկայացումներուն՝ հեղինակին անունը գիտցողին փոքրիկ անակնկալ մը կայ»։ Հաճելի անակնկալներով լի այդ ձեռնարկին ընթացքին ներկայացուեցան Նոր տարուան մասին տասներկու այլազան ոճերու ստեղծագործութիւններ։ Իւրաքանչիւր ընթերցումի աւարտին, ներկաներուն առիթ տրուեցաւ գուշակելու հեղինակին անունը. ճիշդ պատասխան տուողը ստացաւ միրգերու փոքր տոպրակ մը եւ խնձոր։ Ապա ներկայացնողը հակիրճ տեղեկութիւններ բաժնեց գրողին մասին։ Ներկայացուած գործերը հետեւեալներն էին՝ «Նոր տարին» (Մեծարենց), «Նոր տարու հետ նորանալով» (Սահեան), «Ծնունդ» (Թեւեան), «Առաւօտ լուսոյ» (Միսաքեան), «Ամանոր» (Զահրատ), «Եւ բոլոր անոնց» (Իգնա Սարըասլան), «Կաղանդչէք» (Զահրատ), «Ամանոր» (Աննա Մարիա Մուպայէտ), «Ծառ» (Զահրատ), «Նոր տարուայ գիշեր» (Մետաքսէ), «Արի նոր տարի» (հատուած, Սեւակ)։ Մեկնաբանութիւնները, բծախնդրութեամբ պատրաստուած ծրագիրը, ներկայացումներուն համապատասխան նկարաշարն ու այս առթիւ պատրաստուած սեղանը բարձր գնահատուեցան ներկաներուն կողմէ։ Ներկաները կը բարձրաձայնէին հեղինակներուն անունները եւ իւրաքանչիւր ճիշդ գուշակող թանկագին նուէր մը ստացողի

լսելու եւ անհամբերութեամբ հեղինակին անունը գուշակելու։

Այս աննախընթաց «Կաղանդչէք»-ին իրենց մասնակցութիւնը բերին խմբակի անդամներէն Ժպիտ Քէշիշեան, Աննա Մարիա Մուպայէտ, Շանթ Տէօքմէճեան, Ալիք Պապողլեան, Ռիթա Խաչոյեան, Հայկ Յարութիւնեան եւ Լոռի Պէրպէրեան, որոնք հեզասահ եւ ճիշդ շեշտադրումներով ներկայացուցին իրենց բաժին հասած բանաստեղծութիւններն ու

արձակ գրութիւնները։

Մի քանի բանաստեղծութիւններու

Համազգայինի

ուրախացած ենք ձեր ներկայութեամբ, սակայն այսօր առաւել եւս ուրախ ենք ներկաներուն մէջ նոր սերունդի ներկայացուցիչները տեսնելով։ Մեր փափաքն է, որ երիտասարդները ո՛չ միայն ըլլան հանդիսատես, այլ իրենք ալ իրենց մասնակցութիւնը բերեն մեր նախաձեռնած գրական առիթներուն եւ մաս կազմեն մեր յաջորդ ձեռնարկներուն»։

Հրամցուած խնձորներէն աւելի համեղ եւ չիրերէն աւելի քաղցր՝ սիրտ ու հոգի ջերմացնող «Կաղանդչէք»-ը հասած էր աւարտին, սակայն հոգեպարար պահեր ապրող ներկաները, ջերմիկ զրոյցներու շուրջ համախմբուած, կը գովերգէին աննախադէպ այդ ձեռնարկի ընթացքին հրամցուած արձակ եւ չափածոյ ստեղծագործութիւններն եւ անոնց հեղինակներուն գործերը։ Պատկեր մը Ալիք Պապօղլեանի ներկայացումէն (լուսանկարը՝ Յ․ Գուզուեանի)

ընթերցումէն ետք, Աննա Մարիան խօսեցաւ հայկական Նոր տարուան ծագումին մասին ըսելով՝ «Հայկական դիցաբանութեան համաձայն, բնութեան աստուած՝ Վանատուրը խնձոր մը նուիրելով սէր խոստովանած է

իր ապագայ կնոջը՝ Ամանորին, եւ ի պատիւ իրեն Նոր տարին ստացած է Ամանոր անունը։ Ըստ աւանդոյթի, Ամանորի գիշերը

մարդիկ կը ներէին զիրենք վիրաւորողներն ու իրարու խնձոր կը նուիրէին։ Բառացիօրէն՝ ամանոր բառը, որ կազմուած է «ամ» եւ «նոր» բառերէն, կը նշանակէ նոր տարի։ Իսկ ի՞նչ է Նաւասարդը. ան հայոց նոր տարին է, որ դարեր առաջ Օգոստոսին կը տօնուէր»։ Այնուհետեւ ցուցադրուեցաւ տեսերիզ մը, ուր ազգագրագէտ Լուսիկ Ագուլեցին հայկական Նոր տարուան մասին բացատրութիւններ տուաւ եւ ներկայացուց հայկական տօնածառի զարդերը ու բացատրեց անոնցմէ իւրաքանչիւրը մարմնաւորող իմաստները հայ ընտանիքին ու հայ անհատին համար։ Ձեռնարկը շարունակուեցաւ եւ խմբակի անդամները իրենց ներկայացուցած ծաղկաքաղին հմայքը անգամ մը եւս փոխանցեցին ներկաներուն։ Յայտագիրի աւարտին, Գրական յանձնախումբի վարչական ներկայացուցիչ Արմինէ Թորիկեան գիրքեր նուիրեց խմբակի անդամներուն, առ ի գնահատանք իրենց մասնակցութեան, նշելով, որ գիրքերը սովորաբար կը տրամադրուին Համազգայինի «Յ. Մանուկեան» գրադարանէն. իսկ Համազգայինի Կեդրոնական վարչութեան ներկայացուցիչ եւ Գրական յանձնախումբի ատենապետ Թամար Տօնապետեան Գուզուեան հրաժեշտի իր խօսքին մէջ հետեւեալ շեշտադրումը ըրաւ. «Սիրելինե՛ր, մենք միշտ

Աստուածածին եկեղեցւոյ նահապետ Մանուէլ աւագ սարկաւագ Շէհիրեանը: Արդարեւ, կիրակի, 29 յունուար 2023ին, յաւարտ սուրբ եւ անմահ պատարագի, կատարուեցաւ բացումը «Մանուէլ աւագ սարկաւագ Շէհիրեան» գրադարանին, որ կը գտնուի եկեղեցւոյ ներքնասրահէն ներս: Օրուան հանդիսավար Արմէն կիս․

սրկ. Արթին, բարի գալուստ մաղթելէ ետք ներկաներուն, ներկայացուց տիրացու Մանուէլի կեանքը եւ ըսաւ. «Տիրացու Մանուէլը կը սիրէր հայ գիրքը, կը սիրէր հայ եկեղեցւոյ շարականներն ու աստուածաշնչական գրութիւնները»:

Ապա, Արմէն կիսասարկաւագը հրաւիրեց Տ.

Տաթեւ աւագ քահանայ Միքայէլեանը, որպէսզի

իր սրտի խօսքը փոխանցէ եւ շնորհակալութիւն

յայտնեց քահանայ հօր, որ մէկ տարիէ աւելի

իր ժրաջան աշխատանքով իրականացուց

տիրացու Մանուէլի վերջին խնդրանքը:

Տէր Տաթեւ աւագ քահանան խօսք առնելով

ըսաւ. «Տան մէջ գրադարանը համալսարան

մըն է, որ ընթերցասէր մարդուն ամէն օր նոր

բան կը սորվեցնէ ու զինք հաղորդակցութեան

Foreign Affairs Committee Calls on Azerbaijan to End Lachin Blockade

գաղափարներու, լուսաւոր աշխարհին հետ, որովհետեւ մարդ որքան կարդայ, այնքան կը լուսաւորուի միտքը ու կ’ազնուանայ հոգին: Երանի՜ այն մարդուն, որուն կեանքի մնայուն ընկերն ու բարեկամը գիրքն է»: Տէր Հայրը՝ շարունակելով խօսիլ տիրացու Մանուէլի կեանքին մասին, ըսաւ. «Տիրացու Մանուէլ վերջին օրերուն մտահոգ էր. եւ երբ իրեն հարցուցի, թէ ի՛նչը կը մտահոգէ զինք, ան յայտնեց․ «Հայ գիրքը թանկարժէ՛ք է, եւ իմ մահանալէն ետք կ’ուզեմ գիրքերս ապահով ձեռքերու մէջ ըլլան եւ ուրիշներն ալ վայելե՛ն այդ արժէքը»։ Ապա, Արմէն կիսարկաւագը հրաւիրեց Ս. Աստուածածին եկեղեցւոյ սարկաւագաց եւ դպրաց դասերը, որոնք երգեցին «Աշակերտք Քրիստոսի» շարականը։ Այնուհետեւ Տէր Վարդան ծայրագոյն վարդապետ Թաշճեանը իր սրտի խօսքը փոխանցեց ներկաններուն: Ան՝ վեր առնելով տիրացու Մանուէլի երկար տարիներու ծառայութիւնը, ըսաւ․ «Տիրացու Մանուէլը սիւներէն մէկն էր մեր եկեղեցւոյ: Այժմ այս գրադարանին բացումով, այդ սիւնը պիտի յաւերժանայ եւ ապրի այս եկեղեցւոյ անդաստանէն ներս»: Հանդիսութիւնը վերջ գտաւ «Հոգւոց hանգուցելոց»-ի արտասանութեամբ եւ «Կիլիկիա» մաղթերգով:

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development held two hearings where they heard directly from representatives of the Artsakh government, the Armenian National Committee of Canada (ANCC), and Armenia’s Ambassador to Canada on the current situation in Artsakh in light of the months-long Lachin Blockade.

On Feb. 14, the Committee unanimously passed a motion calling on the government of Azerbaijan “to reopen the Lachin Corridor and guarantee freedom of movement in order to avoid any deterioration in the humanitarian situation.” Bloc Quebecois Shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Stéphane Bergeron spearheaded the motion and hearings. The motion followed similar statements by Global Affairs Canada and the National Assembly of Quebec.

On Feb. 22, the International Court of Justice, the United Nations court to which Armenia had brought a case against Azerbaijan regarding the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), issued an order to the government of Azerbaijan to “take all measures at its disposal to ensure unimpeded movement of persons, vehicles, and cargo along the Lachin Corridor in both directions.”

At the time of writing, Azerbaijan has so far ignored the court order.

AGBU Toronto Innovation Studios:

Unleashing the potential of creators and innovators

The Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) of Toronto will soon launch its new initiative for students between 11 and 18. Innovation Studios will combine elements of Armenian culture with STEAM education and draw from science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics.

The program aims to foster critical thinking and problem-solving and develop a sense of agency and the power of capacity. “We want the students to be empowered not only with the skills of the future but also with a transformation of mindset. We want the participants to feel energized with a can-do attitude,” Lena Sarkissian, a Toronto-based member of AGBU’s Central Board of Directors, explained.

Registration for Innovation Studios is now complete, with 15 students who will receive a scholarship to participate. The inaugural session will take place on March 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students will converge weekly for a three-hour session of workshops in various technological disciplines, all held at AGBU Toronto Centre at 1 Concorde Gate.

During the program, students will be presented with problems they are free to solve independently in the most inventive and resourceful manner possible. The students will work on an exclusive platform to share their projects, learn from each other, and have access to past content. The unique program gives students independence while providing instruction for guidance and support. According to Sarkissian, the program has eliminated the concept of failure; instead, an unsuccessful attempt is treated as the “first attempt in learning.”

“It’s about transforming the participants’ attitudes to unleash everyone’s potential. In a world characterized by an unknown, unclear future, we want the participants to be activated by both an enhancement of their skills and a transformation of their mental frameworks,”

Sarkissian said.

As Armenian institutions shift their priorities to focus more on science and technology globally, young people will have far more opportunities to harness skills and develop them in preparation for their professional careers. Sarkissian notes that the program does not mimic a traditional classroom setting but is a hands-on, open workshop created to help learners learn new skills and reach their goals. Students will have access to 3D printers, laser cutters, and the latest software in graphic design, visual arts, music, photography, animation, robotics, and video game design. Additionally, the program offers many opportunities for traditional arts and crafts, product creation, and activities in other exciting spheres. With each studio, the students will embark on new creations and innovations. They will also be given a chance to present their portfolios of accomplished work at the end of the course. One of the primary focuses of the Innovation Studios and their STEAM outlook is engaging with robotics. Participants will learn Arduino, an open-source electronic prototyping platform, during the robotics workshop.

The commitment to science and technology

program hopes to connect young Armenians around the world. Innovation Studios hopes to connect Armenian youth across the world by organizing them to work together on a collective project. This also includes the possibility of working with students at the TUMO centre in Yerevan and other locations. This initiative is one of many worldwide aimed at developing the global Armenian–someone who is both a positive contributor to their local community as well as the international Armenian community. AGBU supports the personal prosperity of its students and the development of one’s identity while engaging with their fellow global Armenians. This outlook attempts to shift the standard from preservation to creation and innovation. The program hopes to empower young Armenians across the globe to create solutions to the problems faced by the world, all the while contributing to Armenian culture as well.

Toronto-born, Yerevan-based writer and creative producer Nyree Abrahamian is among the ten recipients of the 2023 Creative Armenia-AGBU Fellowship. The arts foundation and the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) announced the fifth class of Creative Armenia-AGBU fellows in a statement on Jan. 31.

“As always, the fifth wave of the Fellowships will empower powerful new voices in film, music, literature, the visual arts, and beyond with funding, mentorship, and career support—but this year with a special emphasis on Artsakh-related projects,” reads a part of the statement.

Abrahamian is currently producing a podcast featuring stories of people living in Armenia during this critical time for the country. “Country of Dust”’s first season is slated to premiere in the near future. She has worked on several innovative educational programs and written for humanitarian organizations such as UNICEF and the HALO Trust. Abrahamian is a former adjunct instructor at the American University of Armenia (AUA), where she taught a foundational communications and civics course. In 2021, she was selected as a mentee in the International Armenian Literary Alliance’s (IALA) mentorship program’s inaugural session.

Abrahamian, who holds a B.A. in English from York University and an Ed.M. in International Educational Policy from Harvard University, is also one of the organizers of the Tumanyan International Storytelling Festival. Born and raised in Toronto, she lives in Yerevan with her husband and two children.

“With the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Artsakh, we are proud to support artists who are on the frontline of an important cultural mission,” said AGBU Central Board member Ani Manoukian. “The indifference of the world must be challenged by the creation of new films, works, and images out of Artsakh—a profound and continuing cultural legacy.”

Last month, Creative Armenia and AGBU announced the launch of their Artsakh awareness and education campaign, marked by the digital release of the award-winning war documentary “Invisible Republic,” which tells the story of the 2020 Artsakh War through the eyes of writer and photographer Lika Zakaryan. “At this moment of crisis, Lika Zakaryan’s story is more vital than ever,” said Garin Hovannisian, the film’s director and Creative Armenia’s founder. “We are proud to support Lika, as we are proud to support our Fellows and all artists working to make our invisible republic more visible to the world.”

The 2023 Creative Armenia-AGBU Fellows will receive a $5,000 grant, mentorships with industry leaders and award-winning artists, and diverse promotional opportunities.

“I am elated that the unity and the advocacy of Scarborough and Scarborough-Agincourt residents paid off. I was honored to defend the interest of our residents and oppose the initial proposal by making my opposition clear during the Commission’s public hearings,” Babikian said in a letter addressed to riding residents on Feb. 12. “Our residents once again sent a clear message that we will not tolerate the injustices our region has been subjected to in the past. I am proud and privileged to represent such a great and vibrant community,” Babikian added.

Last year, the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission proposed a drastic change to the boundaries for Scarborough-Agincourt, which included plans to annex a large portion of the western neighborhoods and amalgamate them into North York. There were also plans to reduce Scarborough’s electorate districts from six to five.

The Commission released a short statement about its decision on Feb. 10, outlining that it was tasked with proposing new boundaries that, “as best as possible, maintain population equality while taking into consideration social and geographic factors, including respect for communities of interest or identity and historical patterns of previous boundaries.”

“The time and effort committed by the public to this important democratic process was remarkable and very much valued by the Commission. We are satisfied that we have balanced our statutory obligations with the views of the people of Ontario, striving for the goal of effective representation”, said the Honourable Justice Lynne C. Leitch, Chair of the three-member Commission.

“The initial proposal generated anger and displeasure among our residents. Many of us felt Scarborough has once again been discriminated against and disenfranchised,” Babikian said in the letter. During a public hearing organized by the Commission last October, many Scarborough-Agincourt residents voiced their concerns to the Commission. “As a result of our collective efforts, in its final report on Feb. 10, 2023, the Commission reversed its redistribution plan for Scarborough-Agincourt and Scarborough. The Commission admitted that its first proposal was ‘another act against a part of Toronto which feels it has suffered a long series of setbacks and disappointments from governments of all levels,’” Babikian explained.

Obituary: Marie Ghazarian Nichols, Torontohye’s oldest known reader (1920-2023)

Marie (or “Mets” to friends and family)—a true Kessabtsi in spirit— was born in Keorkeuna, an Armenian village in Syria, during the wheat harvest in October 1920. Her father Serop “Azab” and her mother Faride “Sitta Lelo” Ghazarian were survivors of the Armenian Genocide.

Marie recently celebrated her 102nd birthday. She was predeceased by her younger brothers Yessai in Toronto, Simon in Brazil, and their wives Marie and Suzanna. She passed away on Jan. 22, 2023, and is survived by her daughter, Johanna Nichols (DarrellLee), son Albert Nichols (Jeni), and her grandchildren, Sienna and Jera, as well as her brothers, John (Varsenig) and Sam (Kohar).

Marie led a much-storied life— from Kessab, to Lebanon, to Gaza, to Toronto, to Calgary, and eventually to Penticton, in the beautiful Okanagan Valley. She worked as a dedicated and skilled nurse in Lebanon, Gaza (during WWII), Toronto, Calgary, and Penticton. Marie was a devoted single parent to her children, who regarded her as their hero. After she

Marie was proud of her Armenian heritage and continued to learn and read about Armenian history and culture throughout her life. She was always happy to host any Armenians passing through town and did her best to educate non-Armenians who would sit and listen about her history and tell tales from her youth. She could never make a pilgrimage back to Kessab; however, her heart was always with her homeland and her people.

Torontohye’s editors and staff extend their deepest condolences to Marie Marlene Ghazarian Nichols’ family and loved ones. Marie, who we believe was Torontohye’s oldest regular reader, was a longtime supporter of our publication and a subscriber to our print edition since 2010.

sadly lost one of its long-standing members on February 2, 2023. Hagop “Jack” Ashdjian was born in 1929 in Beirut, Lebanon, to genocide survivors Asadour Ashdjian and Takouhy (née Torahanian). He became an accomplished auto mechanic and served the Beirut Armenian community through the civil unrest of the late 1950s. In April 1961, with his sisters Haigouhie and Lucy, he landed at the Pier 21 immigration terminal in Halifax and settled in Toronto. He applied his entrepreneurial spirit to start a Texaco gas station at Pape and O’Connor Drive,

held for Toronto’s burgeoning Armenian community. From the earliest days of their establishment, he played an active part in the Toronto Armenian comedic theatre and dance groups.

In 1965, he married Mary (née Kavoukian) and established a loving family with daughters Nora and Maral, eventually being blessed with two grandchildren, Avrene and Thomas.

He passed away peacefully at the age of 94. All those who knew Jack will remember how he would light up the room with his jokes, smile, and passion for life.

The Armenian community gears up to celebrate the centennial of the Georgetown Boys and Girls:

a conversation with Daniel Ohanian

A century ago, a group of Armenian boys arrived in Canada in what many historians have suggested constituted the nation’s first large-scale humanitarian effort—“Canada’s Noble Experiment,” which resulted from the efforts and actions of concerned citizens and nongovernmental organizations.

As the Armenian community of Canada gears up to celebrate the centennial of the arrival of the first group of Armenian survivor children to Canada, we sat down with the Sara Corning Centre for Genocide Education’s Director of Research, Daniel Ohanian, to learn more.

Torontohye: Why are we marking the centenary of the Georgetown Boys and Girls’ story this year?

Daniel Ohanian: The short version of the Georgetown story is that, between 1923 and 1930, the Armenian Relief Association and the United Church received federal government permission to bring over 150 boys, girls, and women displaced by the Armenian Genocide— most of them orphans—to Canada.

2023 marks a hundred years since the first group of boys arrived.

But the story has a longer background, and it was a serious challenge for the association to pull it off.

Canadians started learning about Armenians in the late 1800s in a very gradual way. Between 1860 and 1915, around 50 Canadians went to the Ottoman Empire to work with the Armenians as missionaries, setting up schools and medical clinics and spreading Protestant-Evangelical Christianity. During antiArmenian massacres in the 1890s and 1909, these missionaries sent news about what was happening to churches and newspapers in Canada. That’s how Canadians started to learn about what sorts of people Armenians were and where they lived. A stereotype was created that was very useful for several fundraising campaigns run in those days: Armenians were a persecuted, suffering, pitiable Christian people in the East who needed help. This stereotype was used again during the genocide and after it, to great effect. Between 1915 and 1930, non-Armenian Canadians donated $1 million (roughly $17 million in today’s money) to help Armenians abroad.

Georgetown is part of this story about missionaries and fundraising, but it’s also different from it. One of the essential differences is that the suffering-Armenian stereotype was both a blessing and a curse for the Georgetown project.

Torontohye: How so?

Ohanian: Armenians were being killed and displaced not just in 1915 but for about 15 years after that too. The genocide took place in phases, and wars

and economic crises prevented roughly half a million survivors from putting down roots right away. One of these wars (the Turkish War of Independence led by Mustafa Kemal, later named Atatürk) threatened orphanages all over what is today Turkey. The question of what to do about the orphans there led a group of men in Toronto to try something new.

In 1922, in response to panicked telegrams from Constantinople, the Armenian Relief Association negotiated an agreement with the federal government

his mind after hearing from close personal friends, political allies, and, in varying ways, tens of thousands of citizens. At the same time, the association had to settle for far less than it had initially wanted. It received an immigration quota of 100—only two percent of the 5,000 for which it had agitated.

The Georgetown Armenian Boys’ Farm Home was set up as a 200-acre training orphanage modelled after what were called industrial schools. It received its first group of student-orphans, aged roughly 10-12, on July 1, 1923—what was then called Dominion Day, now known as Canada Day. The next seven years were full of growth, challenges, and adaptation. New quotas were received for more boys and girls and women too. Donors, reporters, and neighbours came to see the work being done at the farm home firsthand. Interviews were given, concerts were organized, and money was collected. The boys were sent out to work on farms, and the girls and women were to work as maids. After a few years, the project was taken over by the United Church of Canada before being wrapped up on the eve of the Great Depression in 1930. To my knowledge, the last Georgetown Boy, Yervant George Makinisian, died in 2004, and the last Georgetown Girls, Aznive Lorna Campbell-Merson and Armenouhi Armine Kavookjian-Turmanian, died in 2011.

Torontohye: What has been planned to mark this centennial?

Ohanian: The organizing committee is planning at least two events: The main event will be held in June at Cedarvale Community Centre in Georgetown in partnership with the Town of Halton Hills. We’ll publicize details in the spring.

The second event is a book launch. Something the Corning Centre is working on this year is to republish Ararat Monthly /

officials described Armenians as inherently or culturally inferior to Britishers and too carefree about cheating and lying. They also pointed out—and rightly so—that there weren’t many Armenian farmers in the country. It was clear to them that these run-down, non-British non-farmers shouldn’t be allowed in.

It was a spirit of tenacity and compromise that carried the day. As far as we can tell, the relief association was allowed to set up its farm-orphanage in Georgetown because Prime Minister Mackenzie King, who’d previously rejected the idea, changed

the official newsletter of the Georgetown Boys. Ararat was the brainchild of the Boys’ Armenian teacher and older-brother figure, Aris Alexanian. Newsletters like this were used by Armenian and non-Armenian orphanages to share the news with past and prospective donors and to give children something creative to work on. Aris published about 45 issues over four years, 15 in English and the rest in Armenian. It was an impressive undertaking. In the early years, the Boys would write articles and stories and draw pictures; their contributions would be typed up, and the newsletter would be sent to readers in Ontario, the U.S., France, and Soviet Armenia.

Torontohye: How does one go about collecting issues of newsletter that was published almost a hundred years ago? Have they been compiled before?

Ohanian: We’ve been working to collect originals and copies of Ararat since 2012, but they’re

“The strong do what they can, and the weak suffer what they must.” This was the phrase the winning Athenians proudly declared over their enemies during the Peloponnesian War of 404 BCE. In offering an ultimatum of surrender or death to the Melians, the victors identified this ruling principle of their foreign policy, one that continues to be upheld by the powers of the world. In other words, “might makes right.” Under these pretences, the actions of the strong are always “rightful” because of the strong’s capability to enact them. The emphasis has been skewed away from the action’s morality toward the potential resources available to enforce the action. In an international system void of empathy and human values, this ideology has thrived and paved the way for the victory of the strong and the forcible suffering of the weak. This pattern is more evident today, especially with regard to the destructive actions taken by the visibly stronger Republic of Azerbaijan in pursuit of the annihilation of the Armenian population of the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh).

In dissecting the statement mentioned above, we see a dramatic difference in the type of actions available to the strong and the weak. On the one hand, the strong “do what they can.” Strong states always choose to optimize their gains and avoid staying idle or forgoing beneficial opportunities. They also utilize their existing resources to achieve a goal in sight. Although their finite resources limit their ambitions, they enjoy a fair amount of freedom to mobilize resources when the opportunity arises. With that in mind, to prevent further immoral behaviour by the strong states, one must either inhibit the emergence of exploitative opportunities or limit the resources at their disposal.

On the flip side of the coin, the weak “suffer what they must.” The inevitability of the suffering and loss endured by weak states is a result of the strong’s actions. The suffering may also be the actions’ direct intent since the “might is right” ideology implies that the destruction of one’s capability to retaliate automatically strips one from its right to retain control of one’s resources. Without the might to protect them, the strong can simply annex the assets and maintain rightful ownership. The degree of harm experienced by the weak states is entirely dependent on the point of satiability of the strong. The constant suffering of the weak states diminishes all remaining resources, inhibiting attempts to balance the power between the two actors. This paradigm places the weak in a position of complete failure to survive in the international system, as it eliminates most positive courses of action that could secure some leverage or stability in world affairs.

The “might is right ‘’ ideology means the strong can choose how much to take, and the weak must deal with the emerging consequences. From the perspective of a strong state, it justifies exploiting every opportunity in search of gains. From the weak’s perspective, the principle perpetuates existing inequalities and magnifies its weaknesses. The international community diagnoses the pattern of behaviour as a state’s need for survival. However, it does not seem anxious to cure the disease, even if its symptoms have been shown to exceed standards of greed and vengeance. In line with this, strong states do what they must to maintain their powerful position in the world, achieve economic growth, and stabilize internal conflict.

Similarly, the weak follow suit to sustain territorial control over their nation, shield themselves from international threats, and provide vital services to citizens. The raging inequality in the world economies and societies can help to explain these varied definitions of survival. In that sense, the founding reality of international relations is a zero-sum game between instinct-driven animals with varying levels of strength in contrast with the description we are told to believe that is rooted in the rationality and humanity of the actors.

The “might makes right’’ ideology provides a focused lens through which we can observe the escalating violence enforced upon the Armenian population of Artsakh by Azerbaijan. Mainly, we see the strong doing what they can to achieve their regional goals and the weak suffering the consequences. The “might is right” mindset can be seen through the Azerbaijani policy of imposing varied types of pressure and suffering

onto the Armenian population until Armenian resources for defence, retaliation, or survival are depleted. Moreover, we continue to witness the Armenians’ inescapable suffering and the state of their survival and peace resting in the hands of the strong. The prime example of the “might is right’’ ideology is the blind eye the international community has turned to the ongoing strife of the Armenians, compared to its sacrificial love towards more opportunistic victims of oppression.

It’s hard to deny the unbalanced outcomes of an international system ruled by such an ideology. However, we must remember that it was the winning Atheniains who claimed “might is right” as the ultimate principle of foreign affairs. They are the ones this system benefits. The weak, on the other hand, are disadvantaged and forced to accept the suffering emerging from the strong’s geopolitical ambitions.

Everything, of course, must eventually come to an end. Even the most sophisticated system has a blind spot leading to its downfall. While the strong strive to divide and conquer, can the weak powers of the world unite and resist? Armed with a united front, the weak powers of the world could construct a competitive force against the strong and turn the tables in their favour. This proposition remains a distant possibility in a fragmented global society with magnified differences. Yet change is always possible, especially in a time of shifting centers of power. In due time, an opportunity is bound to arise where the weak will renew the ruling ideology of international affairs. Then, as one is conscious of the woes of the previous ideology, it must refrain from taking up the deadly cycle of vengeance and aim to recreate the system to uphold morality over ability. If international relations is truly a game between rational powers, its ruling principle will evolve into one proudly declared by both the victors and losers of world affairs: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Rising rates and record pre-construction condos: How will the GTA market fare in 2023?

Are you considering investing in a pre-construction condo in the GTA?

With rising interest rates making it harder for buyers to qualify for mortgages and a new “anti-flipping” law making it more costly for investors to flip properties, what can we expect for the pre-construction market this year?

My name is Ani Imastounian, and I would like to welcome you all to my new monthly column in Torontohye where I will be exploring and discussing these and other topics pertaining to the Toronto real estate market.

Urbanation reported that 32,000 condominium units are to be completed in the GTA in 2023; 18,000 of them will be built in the first half of the year. The majority of these units are owned by investors and thus will ve available on the rental market.

In 2022, the rental increase year over year was 20 percent, meaning that the demand for rental units exceeded the supply. This year, there will be added demand for rental units as the population of the GTA will grow by at least 60,000 people. The extra supply may help keep the rental prices more stable this year.

According to Rob Carrick, a personal finance columnist at the Globe and Mail, many buyers are having problems qualifying for a mortgage with five-year interest rates topping five percent. According to him, lenders are also appraising units

at lower prices, which means that buyers have to come up with extra funds to make up the difference. To obtain a mortgage, all buyers must pass a stress test to determine how much they can afford to borrow and pay each month in case interest rates go up. Some investors will face challenges and look to find private lenders to complete their deals. Some investors will also try to liquidate their units before closing by way of assignments. Will this be a good time to look for good deals? Yes, absolutely, as many investors will let their units go before closing. So, if it’s possible to close on a property, my best advice would be to do so and hold it for at least a year.

The federal government recently introduced a new “anti-flipping law” to crack down on flipping properties. In effect since Jan. 1, the new measures apply to residential properties sold on or after the first day of 2023.

Whether it’s your primary residence or not, anybody who sells a property that they have owned for less than a year must consider the sale amount as business income while filing their income taxes. In the past, the flip amount was treated as capital gains income, which meant that only half of your profit was taxed. As a result of this new law, if you are considered a “flipper,” you essentially pay double the taxes.

With the prices of pre-construction condos in Toronto on the rise, we may begin to see an increase in the number

of buyers looking to the resale market for already-built condos. The price gap between the two markets has widened significantly this past year, with the resale market tending to offer more affordability.

As interest rates continue to rise and the new “anti-flipping law” goes into effect, the pre-construction condo market in the GTA may see some challenges in 2023. However, with a record number of units set to be completed and a growing population in need of rental units, there may also be opportunities for savvy investors

to find deals. It’s important to weigh the potential risks and rewards before making any investment decisions. How will the interest rate hikes affect the preconstruction market while a record number of pre-construction condos are set to be completed in 2023? Only time will tell!

Understanding inflation

Thank you for your overwhelming support of the first installment of my column (published online) about the housing benefit top-up and the vacant home tax declaration.

This month, I would like to weigh in on a topic that has undoubtedly impacted our readers for the past year and will likely keep impacting our lives for the foreseeable future: inflation.

Inflation has impacted Canadians-and the rest of the world--since as far back as the last quarter of 2021. As a result of post-Covid spending with the addition of supply chain management issues, the regular rate of inflation rose from two percent to around five. In 2022, this trend continued, with inflation rising as high as 8.1 percent last June.

Torontohye: In 2010, thanks to the efforts of the Armenian National Committee of Toronto (ANCT), Cedarvale Park was designated an Associative Cultural Landscape. A year later, a provincial plaque was installed to commemorate the Armenian Boys’ Farm Home. There have recently been some whispers in the community about the fate of the building that currently houses the Cedarvale Community Centre.

Ohanian: Actually, the future of the community centre is, in fact, unclear.

Until a few years ago, most believed the building was the original farm home. In 2020 or 2021, the town was conducting an architectural assessment and discovered that it was not the original farmhouse. They contacted us, and the Corning Centre investigated. Based on almost 100 archival photos and maps, we were able to see that the architects were right.

The future of the building is unclear, and it’s likely that the building will lose its protected status and be demolished by the town since it’s in poor shape. The town will be well within its right to do that. But given the symbolic importance of the site in general, as well as the habit Armenians in Ontario have made of visiting the site, we’re talking with the town about ways to continue marking the Georgetown story there.

What is a standard rate of inflation, you ask? The Bank of Canada and most economists say two percent or below constitutes a safe inflation rate. Although this number has fluctuated in the past 60 years, the government has always avoided long periods of rises to inflation above the two percent mark. In the last 25 years, we’ve only had inflation rise over or hover around four percent four times; the government swiftly dealt with all instances of this.

The usual response by the government is to cut people’s spending by increasing interest rates, which directly impacts those who own properties. As a result of the higher rates, they will spend less on nonessential items, as their disposable income would be lower than usual (especially for those with variablerate mortgages). Many people have preferred variable-rate mortgages, especially in the last 10-15 years,

as interest rates have been low and discounts on variable mortgages are generally higher, considering the risk.

So, what happened this time around? Why did governments stumble in their approach to the inflation issue? First of all, we were in a post-pandemic period, and there was a fear that any increase in mortgage rates could drive the world into a recession similar to the Great Depression. Also, the supply chain management issues that COVID created were expected to last only a short time. These factors led governments to take a more nonchalant approach to dealing with inflation.

Today, we find ourselves with high mortgages, which is a harsh reality for some. And if these trends continue for another nine months to a year, some may be forced to sell their houses. How long will interest rates be this high? The rates are expected to start coming down likely by the end of the year or early next year; it all depends on the inflation rate and if the government’s actions will improve the economy.

My message to my readers is to hang in there; there is light at the end of the tunnel. Readers should know that even when interest rates go down, they will not go down to the 2.5 percent rate we were at nearly a year ago. For the foreseeable future, we are facing higher rates between three to four percent with the Bank of Canada.

այս ճաշատեսակը կը պատրաստուի ե՛ւ գարնան, ե՛ւ աշնան, երբ վայրի խոտաբոյսերը առատ են: Այս համով, անուշաբոյր հացը տասէն մինչեւ քառասուն տարբեր խոտաբոյսեր եւ կանաչեղէններ կը պարունակէ. անշուշտ կախում ունի թէ որո՞ւն կը հարցնես…

Բախտաւորութիւնը ունեցած եմ ժինգիալով հաց

պատրաստելը սորվիլ Սարոյէն եւ Յասմիկէն, որոնց հիանալի ընտանիքին հետ մնացած եմ իրենց տունը, Շուշի: Յասմիկը Ժինգիալով հաց թխելը սորված

է իր մօրմէ. Յասմիկը բացատրեց, որ դժուարին

ժամանակներուն ստեղծուած այս հացը կ’ապացուցէ,

որ, ինչպէս իրենք կ’ըսեն՝ «ղարաբաղցիք սոված չեն

մնում»։ Կ’երեւի այս է պատճառը, որ «ժինգիալով հաց»-ը

յաճախ կը թարգմանուի, որպէս «անտառի հաց». ան կը

պատրաստուի ամէն ինչէ, որ կարելի է տուեալ պահուն

գտնել՝ գոյատեւելու համար։

Թէեւ Յասմիկին հաւաքած կանաչեղէններուն եւ

խոտաբոյսերուն շատերուն ծանօթ էի, ինչպէս եղինջին (nettle) ու սամիթին (dill), ան մի քանի անգամ յիշեցուց, որ

առանց բաղադրատոմսի

պատրաստուող այս կերակուրը

իրաւամբ ունի քանի մը կանոններ: Երբեք ուրցը չի

գործածեր, իսկ, ըստ իրեն, խոտաբոյսերուն վրայ շատ աղ

դնելը յանցագործութիւն է։ Հացը պէտք է եփուի այնքան, որքան ան դիւրաբեկ (crispy) դառնայ, նախընտրաբար

սաճի տապակի մէջ, բայց այնքան թեթեւ կրակի վրայ, որ

խոտաբոյսերը մնան թարմ: Գրեթէ միշտ խորհուրդ կը

տրուի մատուցել զայն մէկ բաժակ գինիիով կամ թանով։

Թէեւ ես տակաւին աւանդաբար օգտագործուող

խոտաբոյսերու իդեալական տեսականիով չեմ

պատրաստած, բայց իմ ընտրած տարբերակով կը

ստանամ համեղ բուրաւետ հաց, որ Արցախի մէջ իմ

վայլած ժինգիալով հացը շատ կը յիշեցնէ: Յոյսով եմ,

որ շուտով դարձեալ մենք կարենանք

Խմորին

բոլոր կանաչիները (եւ պղպեղը, եթէ օգտագործուի) մանրել եւ դնել մեծ ամանի

խառնել։

Հաւաքուած խմորը բաժնել ութ գունդերու, ծածկել չօգտագործուողները։ Ալիւր ցանել մակերեսի վրայ, ալիւրոտել գրտնակը, խմորը հնարաւորին չափ բարակ բանալ՝ պահպանելով հաւկթաձեւ, կլոր կամ ուղղանկիւն ձեւը։ Մեծ քանակով միջուկ տարածել խմորին վրայ։ Լայնութեան

երկու հակառակ ծայրերը սեղմել նախ

մէջտեղը, շարունակել ամրացնել մնացած

խմորը։ Այնուհետեւ օգտագործելով ափը

կամ գրտնակը նրբօրէն հարթացնել խմորը

որքան կարելի է։ Տաքցնել տապակը միջին տաքութեամբ կրակի վրայ եւ դնել ժինգեալով հացը, եփել իւրաքանչիւր կողմը 3-5 վայրկեան (minutes), մինչեւ խմորը եփի եւ թեթեւ կարմրի։

– Շատ լաւ, – ըսի ժպտալով -, իսկ ի՞նչ խորհուրդ կը տաս, որ խմենք։

– Հոնի՛ արաղ, – զարմացած արտայայտութեամբ մը պատասխանեց երիտասարդը, կարծես ըսել կ’ուզէր.
