Դասախօսութեան երկրորդ նիւթով հանդէս եկաւ Մոնթրէալէն ժամանած Լորիկ Սապունճեան-Ծատուրեան «Սուրիոյ
թրծուած սուրիահայութեան հայրենասիրական եւ ազգային շունչով կերտած դժուարին, բայց յաղթական ճանապարհին բազմաբնոյթ մանրամասնութիւնները։ Այնուհետեւ ցուցադրուեցաւ Հրայր Թաշճեանի համադրած «Պատկերներ սուրիահայ կեանքէն» տեսերիզը, որուն քար լռութեամբ հետեւող ներկաները, պատերազմին պատճառած հոգեխռով փայլատակումներու յոյզեր ապրեցան, միեւնոյն ժամանակ՝ վէրքերու բուժման եւ վերակառուցման խրախուսիչ պատկերները դիտելով լաւատեսութեամբ յուսադրուեցան։
Երրորդ դասախօսը, Նիու Եորքէն ժամանած աշխարհահռչակ արուեստագէտ, սուրիահայ Գէորգ Մուրատ, ներկայացուց «Արուեստը մշակոյթի պահպանման միջոց» նիւթը եւ պաստառի վրայ ցուցադրեց իր «Four Acts for Syria» գծագրական շարժապատկերը, որուն տպաւորիչ կախարդանքին շնորհիւ, Սուրիոյ խաղաղ անցեալէն դէպի արկածալից եւ ալեկոծ օրերու, ինչպէս նաեւ երբեմնի ուրախ, ապա՝ տխուր եղելութեան պատկերներուն՝ սեւ ու սպիտակով գծագրական իւրաքանչիւր պատկերին ընդմէջէն, հանդիսատեսը նաւարկեց Սուրիոյ անծայրածիր երկինքին մէջ։ Ապա գեղանկարիչը մօտաւորապէս տասը վայրկեանի մէջ, իր նկարչական կենդանի կատարումով եւ ջութակի վարպետ Յովհաննէս Մուպայէտի նուագակցութեամբ՝ գծագրական կենդանի շարժապատկեր մը ցուցադրեց

Over the years, our bilingual publication has done its utmost to promote the community’s initiatives and events, recognize its achievements, and celebrate our uniqueness.
In June, we bid farewell to our founding editor-in-chief, Karin Saghdejian Deragopian. For the past 17 years, Karin’s steadfast dedication to her community and its members was reflected on the pages of our publication. Thanks to her passion and commitment, the paper has become so beloved by so many. During her tenure, Torontohye grew, prospered, and became a staple within the community.
Until recently, Torontohye published its monthly print edition without fail. Unfortunately, lockdowns and restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic forced the temporary suspension of our print issue. This hurdle, however, did not stop Torontohye’s team of dedicated staff and volunteers from continuing its operations online.
With this issue, we are happy to announce that our print edition is again available to you, our dedicated readers, in a new and engaging format. Along with the redesigned print edition, we will also soon launch a brand-new website to better represent our community and ensure an easier-to-navigate, more userfriendly experience for our readers
We, Toronto-Armenians, have common interests, concerns, and passion for our community. At Torontohye, we believe that a vibrant, unique community like Toronto requires good communication so that we can collectively engage with
those interests, address those concerns, and celebrate that passion.
You may have noticed that, over the past few months, our content has put renewed emphasis on our community—its members, organizations, churches, schools, institutions, and businesses—and has been completely original. We will continue our mission and remain committed to the Armenian community of Toronto by offering a voice to its members, promoting its initiatives and events, recognizing its achievements, and presenting this special community to a broader audience.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all, once again, for putting your trust in our publication and for supporting us along the way. None of this would be possible without you. We would also like to thank Peno and his dedicated staff at the Yerevan-based PROPER company, who meticulously oversaw the redesign and rebranding of our beloved paper.
Torontohye has been and continues to be for everyone passionate about this community. In Oct. 2005, a group of media enthusiasts in Toronto came together and, with the full support of the Armenian Community Centre of Toronto (ACC Toronto), embarked on a journey: publishing a bilingual, financially self-sufficient community-wide newspaper. Their primary motivation was to fill a gap that the expanding community had: a publication with timely content accessible to all members and sections of the community, serving all of southern Ontario.
Today we can humbly assert that thanks to its hardworking staff’s dedication, the ACC’s support, and the continuous encouragement of our readers, Torontohye has filled that gap.
For the past 17 years, the newspaper has been a constant presence in the community covering its myriad activities, news from Armenia and the diaspora, our achievements as a nation, as well as its trials and tribulations. Along the way, we have reported on countless events, conducted numerous interviews with our cultural figures, and provided exposure and opportunity to the young talents of our community. We have given space to all without distinction and tried to be a platform for all voices. To what extent we have been able to achieve and balance that difficult task is left to the judgment of our readers.
But times have changed. In 2005, internet use was limited, and social media was in its infancy. The community mainly relied on print and broadcast media to access news from Armenia and the diaspora. Today social media has become the leading platform to break and disseminate information. The needs and the means have changed. We created our website
and Facebook page a few years back to keep up with the spirit of the times and the fast-evolving media. Those proved to be the most accessed online platforms for our readers during the past ten years, especially during the pandemic when the paper’s publication was intermittent. Today, as print media worldwide faces challenges of accessibility, it has become even more critical to keep up with the spirit of the times. A new approach is also imperative to keep the youth and the young talents of the community involved and engaged.
And who can be more suited to the task but the community’s own Rupen Janbazian, the former editor of the Armenian Weekly and Hamazkayin’s h-pem platform, brings a fresh approach and a new outlook to the paper. I am delighted to have handed over the editorial reins of Torontohye to Rupen and am extremely confident that his media experience will enrich our content and delivery.
Dear Readers,
This brings me to my final words as the founding editor. For the past 17 years, together with my dedicated staff, I have stuck to my commitments through thick and thin. I hope I haven’t let anyone down by my editorial actions, omissions, or misreported or misrepresented any community event or organization.
Thank you to ACC Toronto for its unwavering support; to every person and organization who encouraged our work and believed in what we do. I am grateful to every community member who waited for the paper each month, made the journey to pick it up from a distribution location, took it home, or passed it to a friend.
Thank you, dear Toronto Armenian community, for your loyalty and for being with me during one of my best career experiences; I hope it was in the service of our local and global community. Dominicana’ wows Toronto crowd by Daron Halajian
The Hamazkayin Theatre came to life with eclectic sounds and vibrant colours on Friday, Oct. 21, as hundreds gathered at the Armenian Youth Centre to witness a unique fusion of the music of two distinct nations—the Dominican Republic and Armenia.
The “Armenia Meets Dominicana” was part of the “Armenia Meets” project, the brainchild of dentistturned-musician Ara Arakelyan, who relocated to Canada from Armenia in 2013.
Arakelyan was first inspired by Cuban music when he was studying in Yerevan. Since moving to Canada, he has fully embraced Toronto’s multiculturalism, allowing his artistic vision to come to life. “Canada gives the perfect opportunity to embrace other cultures. Music is a reflection of our lives,” he says.
Before coming to Canada, he was active in the Yerevan jazz scene, playing at Malkhas Jazz Club, the Gamerayin State Musical Theater, and Philharmonic Hall.
Arakelyan began studying piano at the Sayat Nova Music School in Yerevan at age five. After studying piano for eight years, he transitioned into the saxophone and classical guitar. He holds a master’s degree in classical music from Yerevan State University and graduated from the Erepuni State Medical University with a dentistry degree. In Canada, he further pursued his education in jazz saxophone at Humber College and York University.
On Oct. 21, Arakelyan delighted the crowd with his jazz recompositions of Komitas Vartabed’s traditional melodies and newer takes on some of Aram Khachaturian’s, such as “Lezghinka” and “Lullaby.” The performance took place just a day before the 87th anniversary of Komitas’ passing. Often regarded as the father of Armenian folk music, it was especially unique for the crowd to hear such a modern interpretation of Komitas’ tunes the Armenian people have grown to cherish so dearly.
“I have done recompositions often. I wanted to impact and share Armenian music with others,” Arakelyan explains about his vision. “So, I asked myself: How can I take Armenian music to people of other nationalities?”
Arakelyan has previously collaborated with artists of other nationalities to perform shows such as “Armenia Meets Cuba” in Feb. 2019, also held at the Armenian Youth Centre. Arakelyan took Cuban melodies and presented them through the traditional Armenian duduk in addition to crossfusing the songs unique to each culture. He has also played at the Beaches Jazz Festival, TD Jazz Festival, and In Future Jazz Fest at Ontario Place.
During the “Armenia Meets Dominican” show,
the crowd was enchanted by Seyran Ghazaryan and Jivan Stepanian on duduk, shvi, and zurna; Madiana Torosyan on kanon; Jonathan Amador on bass; Sandor Schwisberg on piano; Joaquin Nunez Hidalgo on percussions; and Junior Santos on drums. Arakelyan met the artists from working and playing together on other projects and at different venues in and around Toronto.
Throughout the show, live-painter Tamara Harutyunyan also delighted the audience with her beautiful brush strokes and electrifying colors. After graduating from the Panos Terlemezian Yerevan State College of Fine Arts and completing her Master’s degree there, Tamara continued her studies in St. Petersburg. In 2003, she moved to Toronto, where she studied graphic and 3-D design and has lived here ever since.
“We’ve been [incorporating live painting] in our concerts for some time. The first time was during a charity concert for an Armenian girl with a rare disease, and the proceeds from two paintings were donated to pay for the girl’s treatment,” Arakelyan says. The spirit of giving was alive and well on Friday, too, as half of the proceeds from the show were donated to Yerevan’s “Zinvori Tun” Homeland Defenders’ Rehabilitation Centre. Tamara’s paintings were also auctioned for the Centre, which provides high-quality care to Armenian veterans free of charge.
Arakelyan strives to continue his mission to present Armenian music to other cultures. He says his “weapon” to do so is jazz. During the show, Arakelyan interchangeably played keys, tenor saxophone, and soprano saxophone. His versatility, endurance, and creativity as a musician are apparent in his ability to lead multi-instrumental jazz sets and truly engage his audience.
As a dental technician by trade and a musician by passion, Arakelyan continues to inspire many through his talents. He currently teaches music to students as young as four and as old as the mid-60s. Arakelyan also conducts jazz band programs where his students gain practical experience playing and performing in real-life settings.
Arakelyan’s love for music is perhaps most evident in how he describes his dedication to his students and the stage. “It’s my passion. I teach up to seven days a week, and I love it. I also love performing and presenting this music to a wider audience, so it’s safe to say I don’t miss dentistry much.”
