WYNBERG BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL VS SOUTH AFRICAN COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL

It is a wonderful occasion to welcome our friends from SACS to our campus for the final fixture of the season this year. According to historians, rugby football has been played at both Wynberg Boys’ High and SACS since the 19th century whilst hockey only started as an official winter sport at Wynberg Boys’ High in 1968. In the early days, matches between the two schools were only played once a year but from 1966 there has been a double fixture annually on a home and away basis. What makes this fixture also very special is that the main rugby match will be televised – a sincere word of thanks to ASEM and FNB for their sponsorship.

As these two schools are the oldest traditional boys’ schools in the country and are very similar to each other in ethos and values, the games and rivalry are always very intense. This year will be no exception, and both these school communities are looking forward to closely contested games, a display of good sportsmanship, and a strengthening of the relationship and camaraderie that have been in existence for so long.

I trust that you will enjoy your time on our beautiful campus and long may the healthy and keen rivalry between these two great schools continue to flourish!

Wynberg Boys’ High School Headmaster

Deon Scheepers

As we look forward to our final winter sports season fixture and derby, it is a great pleasure to be hosted by Mr Deon Scheepers and Wynberg as part of your reunion week celebration and festivities.

As two of the oldest schools in our land, our shared history and tradition is something we need to cherish and build upon. Our boys from both schools love their sport and we hope for a weekend of rivalry, friendship and the creation of bonds that in many instances endure for long after we have left school.

What can the school and parents expect from your team this weekend?

Our boys will be well prepared and willing to play for each other.

Where is your strength as a team?

We are fortunate to have a well-balanced team and a strong leadership group.

What is the most difficult part of coaching a school team?

The unrealistic expectations for schoolboys to play like professionals.

Why in your opinion, does school rugby get more competitive each year?

The professional game filters deeper into schools each season, forcing coaches and players to keep improving.

What can the school and parents expect from your team this weekend?

The boys will be giving their all to end the season on a high note. If the weather plays ball, we can hopefully also entertain them with some running rugby!

Where is your strength as a team?

We have a nice heavy pack and an exciting back 3.

What is the most difficult part of coaching a school team?

Probably the fact that you get a new team every season with different strengths and weaknesses. That also makes you a better coach though, as you have to adapt.

Why, in your opinion, does school rugby get more competitive each year? More money is being injected into schoolboy rugby, which makes it more professional. Boys are chasing a career in the game and are focusing on one sport only. Neither of these is necessarily a good thing.

CAPTAIN OF THE FIRST RUGBY TEAM CAPTAIN OF THE FIRST RUGBY TEAM

What is the highlight of your team’s rugby season this year?

The highlight of our team’s season must be our victory over Bishops. That was a massive highlight, because our team had lost to them the last time we played each other so it was a personal one.

How do you motivate your team?

Motivating my team on a Saturday morning isn’t a very difficult thing to do. I think as soon as we walk into our change room, we know what we came to do. My job is to remind the players to keep their cool and not let the occasion get the better of them, and to remember that we don’t only play for ourselves, but for the badge on our chest and for the people that made all this possible.

Who is your vice-captain and how does he support you?

My vice-captain is Nicholas Van Schalkwyk. He is also our deputy head-boy so obviously it makes it so much easier to lead when we have so many other leaders in the team. Nic looks after the forwards during the game because he is our hooker, so he is in the front lines. This helps because I play at the back three back-line positions, so I am sometimes too far to either speak to the referee or get the big boys revved up.

Are you happy with your team’s line-up for this weekend? Do you have any injuries in your team?

I’m happy with our team’s line up. We obviously still have boys out due to injury but there are boys getting to step up in their positions and show the coaches that they are built for first team rugby.

What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make you proud?

If we can get the triple crown this season, it would really make us proud and turn our season around. I think there have a been a few unlucky finishes during our previous games, but the way these boys have kept their heads up and we have kept pushing, has really made us proud. So yes, the triple crown will make us very proud.

What are your plans for the future?

I want to attend UCT and hopefully play rugby for the Ikey Tigers in my next couple of years. My dream is to hopefully get signed by a rugby union and showcase my talents to the world.

How do you motivate your team?

We always do a pre-game and pre-week speech and we set a theme that will carry us through each specific week.

Who is your vice-captain and how does he support you?

Daniel Dayaram and Richard Skeeles are my vice captains. They are extremely supportive and they back me with all the decisions I make.

What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make you proud?

We look forward to playing against Wynberg at the end of the year in the Classic Clash. It is something we have been waiting for and it will also be my 50th first team cap.

What are your plans for the future?

To study at university and hopefully sign a professional contract to carry on with my rugby.

WYNBERG BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL FIRST HOCKEY

MORGAN

Ben Wiley

HEAD COACH OF THE FIRST TEAM: WYNBERG BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL

What can the school and parents expect from your team this weekend?

We are a proud school, with a storied history of excellence in hockey. This year’s first team holds the mantle of being the current custodians of that legacy. Every time a Wynberg Man pulls the 1st XI shirt over his head, he dedicates himself wholeheartedly to the school. Our motto, “Supera Moras”signifying the triumph over challenges, will be evident for all to witness. We are determined to present SACS with the formidable competition they deserve.

Where is your strength as a team?

Our strength lies in our unity as a squad. Comprising individuals from diverse backgrounds, with varying abilities and motivations, we leverage these distinctions to forge a collective of players who prioritize the team over any one individual. The age-old adage, “The team is greater than any player,” remains at the forefront of our collective mindset.

What is the most difficult part of coaching a school team?

Undoubtedly, it involves cultivating a team culture in which outcomes aren’t the paramount focus. The manner in which we approach the game, the image we portray through our actions, the emphasis on the team’s significance over individual achievements, and the reputation of our school, hold more significance for us. If we succeed in fostering a culture that nurtures these principles, then the results will naturally fall into place.

What is the highlight of your team’s hockey season this year?

The highlight of my team’s year is going unbeaten on the Nomads tour.

How do you motivate your team?

Showing encouragement and support for all the players and always trying to positively influence them.

Who is your vice-captain and how does he support you?

Connor Thompson – he helps me to motivate the team when they are tired and tries to push the players to never give up.

Are you happy with your team’s line-up for this weekend? Do you have any injuries in your team?

I am happy with the lineup, and we are all fired up and ready to go.

What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make you proud?

Ending off the season second in our league – this will show us the progress we have made this year

I have applied for university, and I would like to study a Bachelor’s of Engineering, and I will be playing

HEAD COACH OF THE FIRST TEAM: SOUTH AFRICAN COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL

What can the school and parents expect from your team this weekend?

The SACS team plays with speed and intensity, trying to score goals at all times.

Where is your strength as a team?

The SACS team has the ability to counterattack from all areas of the field, and also has an effective penalty corner strike force.

What is the most difficult part of coaching a school team?

No difficulty coaching the SACS 1st team. All team members buy into the SACS playing process and style and are always striving to improve

What is the highlight of your team’s hockey season this year?

Our highlight of the season would be beating our closest rivals Paul Roos, 8-1 at home.

How do you motivate your team?

Everyone in our team is more than capable of executing their individual jobs/skills and therefore I simply need to show them trust and constant encouragement to, as a team, trust within the different lines on the pitch. In all honestly the personality of this group of boys and the +- 5 years of playing together makes my job in leading them easy and fun.

Who is your vice-captain and how does he support you?

Ozair Pillai. Just as talented with his words as he is on the hockey pitch. Although you may be fooled by his highly competitive and no nonsense demeanour during matches, he is certainly filled with laughs, good connections and charisma at all other times. Been a pleasure to lead the team alongside him.

Are you happy with your team’s line-up for the weekend? Do you have any injuries in your team?

Cole Allam is out with a broken thumb, but other than that the squad is all fine.

What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make you proud?

Since it is almost the end of the season and an era, I just want the boys to finish in the right way. The
