A message from the Headmaster of Union High School, Mr William Pringle:

On behalf of the Union Schools, I am delighted to extend a warm and heartfelt welcome to all of you as we gather here for the much-anticipated 2023 Interschools between the Union Schools and Hoër and Laer Volkskool.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome parents, learners and supporters of the participating schools to our campus, as we come together for a week filled with intense sporting clashes and vibrant cultural exchanges.

As we embark on this exciting journey, it is important to remember that this event is not solely about competition. It is about fostering camaraderie, celebrating sportsmanship, and nurturing the spirit of togetherness that unites us all. Interschools provides a platform for us to showcase our talents, challenge ourselves, and build lasting friendships that will transcend the boundaries of the playing field.

To all the participating learners, I extend my best wishes and good luck for the upcoming encounters. Whether you find yourself on the AstroTurf, rugby field, tennis court, or participating in any of the various cultural competitions, remember to give your all, display exemplary sportsmanship and cherish every moment. May the spirit of fair play guide you, and may your efforts be rewarded with personal growth and unforgettable memories.

To the dedicated coaches, teachers, and support staff who have tirelessly nurtured these young talents, I extend my deepest appreciation. Your guidance and commitment have undoubtedly played a vital role in shaping the individuals who stand before us today. Thank you for your unwavering dedication to our learners and for instilling in them the values of teamwork, discipline and resilience.

Lastly, I would like to extend my gratitude to the parents and supporters who have come to witness and cheer on their children. What can the school and parents expect from your team this year?

Firstly, unity amongst the players as I feel one needs to be one for any team to be successful.

Secondly, a brand of rugby that Union has been known for throughout the years. Thirdly, bringing out the best in every player. Lastly, molding these young gentlemen and allowing them to achieve anything possible.

Are you happy with your team’s line-up for the Interschools? Do you have any injuries in your team?

Yes, I am. Although we’ve had a lot of injuries throughout the year, the players have all thankfully recovered in time. This means that we were able to select the best team possible for Interschools.

Where is your strength as a team?

Handling pressure and interplay between our forwards and backline.

What are the qualities you look for in young rugby players?

Being able to do the basics. I’m a firm believer of, ‘if you can do the basics right things will go your way’. Also, a player that believes in teamwork and realizing that we can achieve more through teamwork than individual play.

What is your philosophy as a coach? Do the basics right.

Don’t overthink matters. Play the situation. Work as a team.

Communication and punctuality is key. Discipline/Respect.

There are several coaches I look up to. It’s coaches that I’m currently working with and that I have worked with.

Wat kan die skool en ouers hierdie jaar by Interskole te wagte wees van julle span?

Die span het ‘n hele paar graad 12 spelers wat hulle laaste netbalwedstryd as skolier van Volkskool (12 jaar se skoolnetbal) gaan speel. Vir hulle is dit beslis ‘n hoogtepunt en wil hulle ook hulle skoolnetbal op ‘n hoë noot afsluit. Toeskouers kan dus weet dat elke leerder haar heel beste gaan gee vir haar span, en die skool met trots gaan verteenwoordig.

Waar sou jy sê lê julle krag hierdie jaar?

In ons liefde vir die sport en liefde en trots vir ons skool. Daar is ‘n aanhaling deur Will Rogers wat sê: “If you want to be successful, love what you are doing.” Die span se groot fokus is om dit wat hulle op die baan doen, te geniet en hulle liefde vir die sport met hart en siel voluit uit te dra deur hul spel.

Wat is die hoogtepunt van julle span se seisoen sover?

Ons span het gegroei as `n eenheid. Ons is nou `n familie en nie net `n span nie.

Hoe motiveer jy jou span?

Ek motiveer ons span deur hulle te herinner aan ons visie en doelwitte. Ek gee ook vir hulle erkenning waar nodig is.

Wie is julle onderkaptein en hoe staan sy jou by?

Jay-Lynn Daniels, sy is regtig behulpsaam met opwarming by oefeninge en wedstryde, en sy motiveer my wanneer ek moedeloos raak.

Wat wil julle as `n span die jaar bereik?

Ons as span wil graag hierdie jaar op `n hoogtepunt afsluit. Ons Interskole is ons hoogtepunt en dit sal my baie trots maak as elke speler net sy heel beste hierdie Interskole gee en dit ook geniet.

Wat is jou planne vir die toekoms?

Ek wil graag die kennis wat ek op skool opgedoen het, saam met my neem en my netballoopbaan op Universiteit voortsit.

UNION HIGH SCHOOL FIRST TEAM HOCKEY

What can the school and parents expect from your team this year at the Interschools?

At Interschools, anything can happen on the given day. Both teams have their strengths and weaknesses. Identifying the strength and weakness of our opponents is the best way to prepare for the match. We have put in the hours, done the fitness, had the board talks and prepared well to deliver a spectacular high tempo performance. As we stand on the brink of this momentous occasion, we carry the pride of representing the Union Schools and promise to give it our all.

Where is your strength as a team?

We are on fire right now, making it difficult to pinpoint a single strength for the season. The obvious catalyst of our success is the ability to keep balls out of our net. Our goalkeeper Musa Zweni’s ability and the defender in front of her has been phenomenal this season, allowing Captain Brigetté Oelofsen, my midfielders and striker to focus primarily on attacking principles.

What is the highlight of your team’s hockey season this year?

Well, choosing a highlight for this season is not easy. All of our tours and “adventures” with the team have been beyond exciting. But I guess if I had to choose, I would say our tour to Cape Town in the first term takes the cake.

How do you motivate your team?

I motivate my team and myself by reminding them of that green and gold badge they wear on their hearts and what it represents. Not only are we playing for our school but we are playing for each other. Each of us is playing for the girl alongside us and that is motivation enough.

Who is your vice-captain and how does she support you?

My vice-captains are Anna Pringle and Musa Zweni. Both of them are a great help when it comes to managing the team. I can rely on them to get tasks done that I might not get to as well as by helping lead the team both on and off the field. I am very grateful to have them and would not be able to lead the team the way I do without them.

What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make you proud?

As the 1st XV Hockey of 2023, our goal is to set a new standard of hockey for the upcoming generations. We want to be the foundation for the building of better, higher-quality hockey. It would make us immensely proud to watch the younger hockey players grow into talented hockey players with not only amazing skills but a proud Unionites sportsmanship.

What are your plans for the future?

My plan for next year is to study Physiotherapy at the University of the Free State, while pursuing a career in varsity league hockey with Kovsies. I hope to learn and grow as both a hockey player and an individual.

Wat kan die skool en ouers hierdie jaar by die interskole te wagte wees van julle span?

Die skool en ouers kan ‘n span verwag wat ‘n goeie fondasie het. Ons is al diep in die seisoen, waar ons ook aan verskeie toernooie deelgeneem het. Die span het van krag tot krag gegaan en bou op elk van ons vorige wedstryde en sien uit na nóg ‘n wedstryd waarop ons kan trots wees.

Waar sou jy sê lê julle krag hierdie jaar? Ons krag lê daarin dat ons ‘n eenheid is. Ons is nie net spelers nie, ons is ‘n familie.

Wat is die hoogtepunt van julle span se seisoen sover?

Die hoogtepunt van ons hokkieseisoen is die groei van ons spelers. Nie net as ‘n span nie, maar as individue en om die vermoë om elke uitdaging met ‘n positiewe gesindheid te gemoed te gaan.

Hoe motiveer jy jou span?

‘n Motiverende kaptein moet verseker dat haar spanmaats altyd ‘n gevoel van selfvertroue het.

Die belangrikste is om met ‘n positiewe gesindheid elke oefening en wedstryd by te woon en dit ten volle te geniet. Dit is nie net op die veld waar dit moet plaasvind nie, maar ook van die veld af – ek probeer om my span ten alle tye te ondersteun en motiveer met opbouende en motiverende woorde

Wie is jou onderkaptein en hoe staan sy by jou?

My onderkaptein is Elaine van Rensburg. Sy ondersteun my as ‘n kaptein en help my om die selfvertroue en positiewe gesindheid in die span te behou en om ons afrigter se opdragte uit te voer

Wat wil julle as ‘n span die jaar bereik? Wat sal jou trots maak?

Ons het hierdie jaar gegroei as ‘n span in moeilike, sowel as goeie tye, waar ons saam as ‘n span ontwikkel het. Die groei van die spelers as ‘n span is merkwaardig.

My span maak my altyd trots, maar wat my trots sal maak is as ons al die goeie tye in een wedstryd na vore te bring op die dag van Interskole. Op die ou einde is die Engelse gesegde van ‘It is not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game’, wat my sal trots maak om as kaptein van die veld af stap.

Wat is jou planne vir die toekoms?

My toekomsplanne is om graad 12 te voltooi by Hoër Volkskool en verder my studies by Stellenbosch te voltooi, Radiografie te studeer en ook om op my hokkie te fokus.
