FIRST TEAM RUGBY COACH: SELBORNE COLLEGE

Grant

What can the school and parents expect from your team this weekend?

People can expect an all-in approach from the Selborne boys. Every boy will give of their best for the full 70 minutes. It’s been an emotional season from experiencing both highs and lows and these boys are desperate to finish the season off on a high.

Where is your strength as a team?

We never back away from a challenge. We’ve proven to be resilient this year at times when it has mattered. We are strong up front and possess a skillset at the back that is more than capable of finishing.

What is the most difficult part of coaching a school team?

It’s a massive balancing act. Ensuring the boys have a holistic development whilst at school as well as putting in the time to ensure the team is as prepared as possible to take on and perform every weekend can be a challenge.

Why in your opinion, does school rugby get more competitive each year?

A lot of schools are realising more and more the marketing potential their first team rugby side carries, and as a result more and more resources are pumped into the various rugby programmes.

FIRST TEAM RUGBY CAPTAIN

Bean van Eeden

FIRST TEAM RUGBY COACH: GREY HIGH SCHOOL

What is the highlight of your team’s rugby season this year?

Beating Dale at home with a great team performance was by far the highlight of our season for me personally.

How do you motivate your team?

I try to always have a good energy around the team to keep good spirits. My way of motivating the guys is always with a quick chat and then simply a reminder that we are the Selborne College first team.

Are you happy with your team’s line-up for this weekend? Do you have any injuries in your team?

There are a few bumps and bruises, but the guys coming into the team have played a lot of games and have gained valuable experience throughout the season. I am confident in the team that will take the field against Grey.

What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make you proud?

A result over Grey at home would be a great way to end our season.

What are your plans for the future?

I plan to continue playing rugby and studying in South Africa next year.

What can the school and parents expect from your team this weekend?

We’re here to make the school, parents and old boys proud with a performance that validates 100% effort and guts, combined with smart decisions. Where is your strength as a team?

We have a balanced side and when the forwards and the backline are on the same wavelength, we attack very well.

What is the most difficult part of coaching a school team?

Time is very limited and obviously working with all other sporting codes and teaching constraints, planning is essential.

Why in your opinion, does school rugby get more competitive each year? Yes definitely, there is so much exposure these days and schools use rugby as a marketing tool. In my opinion it will only get more competitive.

Imaani Pemba

Imaani Pemba

FIRST TEAM RUGBY CAPTAIN

What is the highlight of your team’s rugby season this year? Our comeback against a strong Stellenberg and our win against Westville in the dying seconds.

How do you motivate your team?

I encourage them to belief in their abilities and I give them my full backing.

Who is your vice-captain and how does he support you?

Tobias Nota. He helps me out by taking ownership in the backline and giving met advice on decisions that have to be made.

Are you happy with your team’s line-up for this weekend? Do you have any injuries in your team?

I’m more than happy with the lineup, but we have been battling with a few injuries in the backline.

What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make you proud?

Every team’s dream is to have an unbeaten season, but it’s not possible anymore. Other than that just to finish the season off on a high. What would make me proud is to beat the top-rated team in SA.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future are to study and to continue playing rugby.

FIRST TEAM HOCKEY COACH: SELBORNE COLLEGE

What can the school and parents expect from your team this weekend?

We will go into this match and prepare for it accordingly as we would for any other match. Being the last match for the season, it will be a highly contested one.

Where is your strength as a team?

The strength of this team lies in their ability to rise up for any challenge and go into each match with a mature approach.

What is the most difficult part of coaching a school team?

Selborne is an extremely busy school and the boys contribute to many other activities around the school environment. So having to share the boys with other activities, away from the hockey, has been the most challenging part.

What is the highlight of your team’s hockey season this year?

Our highlight of the year was obviously going to Hibbert Shield and competing well against some of the top teams in the country. Another highlight was having nine Selbornians make our provincial side and two of them making a SA school squad.

How do you motivate your team?

I just tell them what all we play for, all the support we get, all the hard work we put in and all the people who believe in us to strive for greatness!

Who is your vice-captain and how does he support you?

James Carr, he plays a critical role in the team. He ensures a positive environment and spirit in the team. He is the rock in the defence, and he allows his teammates to play with confidence around him.

Are you happy with your team’s line-up for this weekend? Do you have any injuries in your team?

Yes, very happy with the team, we will have our full-strength team waiting for Grey, the boys are keen and so am I! Luckily no injuries so far, one or two cuts and bruises but that’s all part of the game.

What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make All we wanted as a team for this year was to compete with the best in the country and produce positive results, we decided to make sure we were fit and had the skills to go head-to-head with the best in the country.

What will make me proud, is to end off my high school career on a high with a good result against Grey, they have been big rivals over the many years for Selborne and it’s always been a tough contest against them. This year I have full faith in our team to take a Win and I back myself and my team to get over the line!!

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future are to look to still play as much sport as I can and trying to do my best in the educational department as well wherever I end up going!

What can the school and parents expect from your team this weekend?

Our attacking brand of hockey will be on display as we take on Selborne.

Where is your strength as a team?

Our strength as a team is being resolute in close matches and having the ability to hold onto close scorelines. We always fight back.

What is the most difficult part of coaching a school team?

The most difficult thing coaching a school team I would have to say, is making sure the impact we have on them as coaches will be positive and beneficial to them when they leave school.

Matthew Kingston

What is the highlight of your team’s hockey season this year?

Beating Paarl Gim after losing the first time in the Hibbert Shield and then beating them the second time.

How do you motivate your team?

We name the positive outcomes and remind the players of all the work and efforts we have been through to come this far.

Who is your vice-captain and how does he support you?

Xander Elkington, when I am extremely tired, he helps me to motivate the boys.

Are you happy with your team’s line-up for the weekend? Do you have any injuries in your team?

Yes, I am very happy, I believe in every single one of the team members and back them all the way.
