Die koerant-afdelings sluit in Lifestyle, Health, Beauty and Wellness, Financial asook Entertainment. Groete, Die AWSUM-span

At Kip McGrath Education Centres we help build the foundations for academic success. Our secret is “back to the basics” and individual attention. We offer professional tutoring for primary through to high school students and has been such a success worldwide. The rst priority is an accurate assessment of the child’s learning status and abilities. An apparent problem with mathematics may well be due to a reading de ciency and reading problems can result from all manner of causes. Parents’ concerns are established and the results of the assessme assessments are discussed con dentially. Once a problem and its causes have been identi ed, the child is placed on a program to suit his/her individual need. The programs are designed so that progress is constant and accelerated. It also gives the children the motivation to succeed. Children often experience success for the rst time at a Kip McGrath Education Centre, because they start working at their own level. Parents who bring their children to KipMcGrath Centres are grateful to have found someone who can help correct their child’s problems with school work.

Mountain biking is ranked as one of the fastest growing sports in South Africa today. Cycling SA has recently renewed its support for schools to promote and embrace mountain biking, with the aim of building recognition for this Olympic sporting discipline in the school sport structure. MTB is a family-friendly activity suitable for young and old and an opportunity to meet new people and socialising on the trail – it’s all part of the adventure.

If mountain biking is already one of your hobbies, you probably know the best spots by now. New trails are opening up all the time, but there are some timeless classics in some glorious surroundings such as in the Cederberg mountains, the Drakensberg, within sight of whales at De Hoop or in the Knysna forests. Some trails and tracks are as short as 10km, while others, like the magnificent Cederberg Mountain Bike Trail in Clanwilliam, can take you over 170 km of the most dramatic rocky terrain you could wish for.

Ready for some riding? Here are some upcoming MTB events: • • • • • • • • • •

Tips to own the beach Dreading the beach this holiday due to low self-esteem, here are some tips to own it! • Tanned skin always looks slimmer and sexier. Before you go on holiday, apply a fake tan three times a week for at least a month and you’ll have a beautiful tan by the time the you step on the plane. • Don’t be afraid to accessorise swimwear or beachwear. It can take the attention away from problem areas and big jewellery makes your body appear smaller. • To minimise packing, use swimwear and swimwear accessories as daywear. Combine your beachwear and daywear together - for instance sarongs, sundresses, shorts and tees are all good cover-ups and acceptable daywear. • For all body conscious women who are afraid to go out in their swimwear, almost

Safe in the sun this summer

every woman obsesses about at least one part of their body. Remember that and then get on with enjoying yourself. Apart from protecting your eyes, sunglasses are an instant confidence boost, adding allure regardless of what you’re wearing. Oversize film star sunnies for women and the classic Ray-ban wayfarer shape for men are failsafe choices. Beach tailoring is a big look. The more flamboyant your swimwear, the more attention you’ll draw to yourself. If you’re uncertain, keep things clean, sharp and quiet on the pattern front. To avoid burning on the beach, don’t be afraid to use hats.

Makeup tip: Swipe on a tinted moisturizer with SPF to cover up any redness, and go for natural colors on your eyes and lips.

When your skin’s been exposed to too much sun, you get what’s known as sunburn. Sunburn can cause blisters and it can lead to heat stroke, even skin cancer when you are an adult. Therefore, be careful this upcoming holiday!

Top Summer safety tips: •

If you’re out in the sun playing on the beach, it’s easy to get heat exhaustion. A kid with heat exhaustion might feel overheated, tired, and weak but heat stroke is a more serious condition and can cause someone to feel dizzy, develop headaches, a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing and a high fever with nausea and vomiting. You might become uncoordinated, confused, or even lose consciousness. It requires emergency medical attention. Dr.Alta Vogel, Natural Health Center, 63 Dorp Street, Stellenbosch www.natural-med.co.za

Always wear sunscreen. Use a sunscreen with an SPF rating of 30 or higher. Put sunscreen 15 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours, just to be safe. • Take frequent breaks from the sun by going indoors or moving into the shade. • Drink enough water. Drink up and don’t wait until you’re thirsty. It is recommended you drink water about every 20 minutes if you are active. Drink water and avoid sodas, juice and other sugar laden or caffeinated drinks as they have a diuretic effect, which remove much needed water from your body. Limit sun exposure during the peak intensity hours, between 10:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon, when the sun’s rays are strongest.

Have a perfect picnic this upcoming holiday

There’s nothing quite as fun as a picnic in the sun. Food always seems to taste so good when eaten outdoors. This month the AWSUM Kombuis shares some top tips to make your picnic perfect and have some brilliant recipe ideas too. Mini quiches

Cowboy Chicken

Fritatta al fresco

Instead of making one large quiche, use lots of small pastry moulds instead. You can add any extras you like to the filling - such as bacon, ham, feta cheese, sweet peppers, spinach, tomatoes, etc.

Cook up some cowboy chicken drumsticks and when they are cool pack them in your picnic.

Quick and easy to prepare in advance and so delicious to enjoy on a picnic.

This is such a quick easy dish and children love picking up chicken legs in their hands and not having to bother with knives and forks.

Preparation time: 5 mins Cooking time: 10 mins Serves: 4

Ingredients: Chicken drumsticks, thighs or wings (depending on preference and price) 2 lemons 2 or more cloves of garlic, crushed Black pepper and mixed herbs (optional)

Ingredients: 30ml/2tbsp vegetable oil 1 onion, sliced 2 courgettes, finely sliced 6 British Lion eggs 75g/3oz Cheddar cheese, grated

Put as many chicken drumsticks (thighs or wings) in an ovenproof dish as you need. Squeeze a couple of lemons over them and squash several cloves of garlic (one per person is a good guide but depends on your taste).

Heat the oil in a frying pan, add onions and fry for 2 minutes until soft. Add courgettes and fry for 4 minutes until golden.

Ingredients: • 1 pack of ready-made pastry (or make your own) • 4 free range eggs • milk or cream • fillings (optional) Line an oven proof dish, it doesn’t matter what shape, with the pastry. In a measuring jug break 4 free range eggs and make up to the 280ml/ half pint mark with milk (full fat) or cream. Add a bit of pepper and some mixed herbs and pour into the pastry lined dish. Grate some cheese (strong cheddar works best) on top of the mixture. Bake in medium hot oven (190 C/gas mark 5) for about 30-45 minutes - until the egg mixture has set and risen. Variations: Once you have made a success of this, you can start adding things to the quiche that you like: bits of cooked bacon, ham, feta cheese, sweet peppers, sweetcorn, broccoli, fresh herbs, spinach, tomatoes ...but it’s just as nice plain. For a crisper pastry base, prick the pastry all over with a fork and pre-cook for 10-15 minutes (blind - with no filling) before removing from the oven and adding the fillings. Then return to the oven to finish cooking.

Season with pepper and mixed herbs. Marinate in the fridge for a couple of hours. When you’re ready, pop them in a 180 C/Gas 4 oven and cook for around 40 mins... or until the chicken is cooked through.

Beat eggs with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Pour eggs into the pan; cook, stirring until egg has lightly set. Shake pan to level surface; cook for 1 minute. Sprinkle over cheese and cook under hot grill for 2 minutes until golden brown and bubbling. Serve warm in wedges sprinkled with basil leaves, if liked.

Serve with potato wedges, rice or baked beans and your favourite vegetables.

Dexter Labuschagne (Old Boy) Matthew Daneel (Matric 2005) had long been wondering why PRG did not have any presence on big social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. As an avid social media user he followed many other schools, witnessed the bragging on their pages and watched their presence grow. He created a PRG Twitter profile as soon as the rugby season of 2012 started, when PRG played an early-season game against Westville Boys’ High from Durban. Following the game through the Westville Twitter updates, he adapted it to PRG’s profile. From that point, the Twitter page grew very fast. After running the account anonymously for about six months, he approached Mr Frans van Niekerk, Deputy Rector. They agreed to create a Facebook page as well. During the early parts of 2013, both pages experienced huge growth, so we decided to include an extra social media officer, André Huisamen (Matric 2012), to assist with day-to-day updates, queries and sports events. PRG is an extremely diverse school with some incredible achievements across many platforms. We want everybody to see this, especially in order to change the mindset that we are ‘just another rugby school’. Simply messsage either the Twitter or the Facebook profile. ‘Like’ Paul Roos Gymnasium on Facebook and follow us @PaulRoos_Gym on Twitter

Paul Roos teen Reddam, 12 Oktober 2013. Meri Williams Scholarship – 2014

Meri Williams matriculated from Rhenish Girls’ High in 2000. She is the author of a best-selling book “The Principles of Project Management”. She specializes in the management of software projects and web design and is the project manager for all of Europe for a large multi-national. She lives in Newcastle in the UK and she recently won the UK Young IT-Professional Award. Meri has very generously committed to the establishment of a scholarship that has been awarded annually since 2010. In the past two years, Meri has extended this to three deserving Rhenishers. Of this, Meri says, “(it) isn’t generosity, it is simply me paying my dues. Rhenish absolutely changed my life. I would never have been independent enough to move to the UK, to study here, to get the career I have without the personal development I got at Rhenish, through the investment of the staff and the girls around me. I know exactly how lucky I am – and I want to make sure as many other girls as possible get the opportunity I did.” The recipients of the Meri Williams Scholarship for 2014 are (from left to right) Bea Badenhorst, Chiquita Williams and Christina Turner.

Above: Ms Meg Fargher (Head of Somerset College Senior School) with Thomas Chambers, Simone Storey and Nina Strong (all Grade 12 students).

Somerset College students acknowledged at President’s award ceremony The President’s Award Programme is a youth empowerment programme and a registered non-profit organisation. The President’s Award can be justifiably proud of the part the organization has played in bringing about change in the lives of over 130,000 young people in South Africa since its inception in 1983. It is also proud of its membership of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Association, as part of a family of over 140 countries that operate the Award around the world. With the assistance of adult volunteer leaders the mission of the President’s Award Programme is to empower young people between the ages of 14 and 25. This is done by providing a balanced, non-competitive framework for self-development that will increase their self-esteem. This enables them to become responsible active citizens within their communities. To participate, a person needs to be actively involved in community service, developing a new skill, taking part in physical recreation and doing an adventurous journey. The involvement of young people in these four activities, with the mentorship of Award Leaders, aims to change their perception about themselves and their world. It also aims to teach them about vital issues such as health, political and social life, as well as the environment. The programme can be pursued in a school, community youth group, residential youth facilities and correctional centre throughout South Africa.

Boland water polo representatives from Somerset College The following girls from Somerset College were recently selected to represent the Girls’ Boland Water Polo Teams for 2013. CD review ADAM - Vir jou gemaak The band ADAM’s second studio album, Vir Jou Gemaak, consists of 14 original songs written by three very talented songwriters, singers and musicians (Hugo Ludik, Joe Foster and Reynardt Hugo). The unknown success of ADAM’s debut album lead to a jam packed tour schedule nationwide and created the opportunity for these three musicians to work even closer together on the songs for the second album. The result was that the songs were written by more than one ADAM member s input

and ideas. The final result: ADAM’s best work ever! 14 Brand new songs, each with the potential to become a hit in its own right. Their first single release from their second album, KASTEEL, is currently playing on every single radio station in South Africa and was also played, to everyone’s surprise by Talk Radio 702. Their music video KASTEEL received over 33 000 hits on YouTube so far and the 2nde single “GEBORE OM JOU LIEF TE HE” is standing just over 22 000 hits on Youtube.
