There is however real hope for these students, and the hundreds of thousands of other South Africans who still don’t have a Matric certificate, an education expert says. “Earning your Matric certificate or pursuing further study is always within reach, if you can deal with the mental and logistical barriers preventing you from continuing your academic and personal development journey,” says Siyavuya Makubalo, Marketing Manager at Oxbridge Academy, a brand of ADvTECH, SA’s leading private education provider. She says there are a number of myths around studying as a mature student which, when carefully scrutinised, don’t hold water. “These include lack of time, lack of confidence in your ability to be successful, concerns about the labour market and unemployment rate, as well as misconceptions about being an older student,” she says.

Dawid Bekker, at the age of 44, decided to rewrite his life story by enrolling for Matric at Oxbridge Academy. He successfully passed his exams last year and, upon receipt of his Matric certificate, enrolled for the Human Resource Management N4 to begin his journey to earn a National N Diploma. “Dawid’s inspiring tale serves as a beacon of hope, proving that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams and redefine your path,” says Makubalo.

However this can be overcome by studying online or via distance learning through a reputable institution.

Lack of confidence: Mature students may feel that the ship has sailed and that they are not academically prepared or capable of succeeding in higher education, especially if they have been out of formal education for a long time. However a quality institution which provides flexibility and superior support will facilitate a successful academic journey. Lack of motivation: Mature students may not see the value of pursuing their Matric certificate or further education, and may have reconciled themselves to where they are in life even while knowing they didn’t live up to their potential. However furthering your education offers a range of benefits including improved self-image through self-actualisation, increased knowledge, skills, and income and career opportunities that can enhance personal wellbeing. Lack of financial resources: Mature students may face financial barriers to accessing higher education. However there are avenues that make further education affordable, and modes of study such as distance and online learning that increases access to quality education. “Finally, mature students may feel that given SA’s high unemployment rate, and potential age-bias on the part of employers, their chances of finding work in their field of study are limited,” Makubalo says. “However showing that you successfully pursued your studies against the odds is proof to hiring managers that you have drive and motivation and that you are able to commit and see things through. These are attractive qualities for any employer, and will position you well not despite of, but because of your age.”

Highlighting a commitment to improvement, Abbotts College proudly reveals statistics showcasing the students’ progress from 2022 Grade 11 to 2023 Grade 12. Notably, the improvements in Maths (24.39%), Science (24.31%), and Business Studies (20.51%) underscore the institution’s focus on academic improvement. Among the Full-Time Students, notable academic improvements were observed in their Final Grade 12 marks compared to their Final Grade 11 marks. • Vutomi Shingange demonstrated commendable progress, with a remarkable increase of 21% in Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD), 10% in English, 10% in Geography, 16% in Life Orientation (LO), 10% in Mathematical Literacy (Matsh Lit), and 15% in Tourism. • Tebogo Mashile excelled in Business with a growth of 14%, while Design saw a substantial increase of 17%. ST BENEDICT’S Class of 2023 Results Once again, St Benedict’s, who ranks as the third best boys’ school in South Africa is celebrating the accomplishments of its matriculants and their outstanding results. The Class of 2023 who sat for their IEB National Senior Certificate exams, produced an impressive 250 distinctions, putting the distinction ratio at 2.25 per pupil, with four students ranking in the top 1% nationally within a subject. The school’s top learner achieved an average of 91.3% and five others averaged over 85%. A further 19 boys have achieved an average over 80%. The cohort has achieved an exemption rate of 95.5%. Over the years, St Benedict’s has consistently demonstrated excellence in the field of Information Technology (IT), positioning itself as a leader in providing students with a cutting-edge technological education. This year was no different, with an average mark of 80.7%, and 17 boys earning a distinction and ready to thrive in our increasingly digital world. The school prides itself on being an institution where the arts are celebrated equally and this shone through in Dramatic Arts where an overall average of 82.8% was achieved. A total of 80% of the boys taking the subject achieved distinctions.

Top Matrics 2023 Reddford House Northcliff had six students with four or more distinctions, with Viresh Chetty achieving an outstanding nine distinctions. He achieved 94% for accounting, 93% for physical sciences and 91% for mathematics. Zain Kaka and Lameez Madhi each achieved seven distinctions. Three students achieved four distinctions, namely Jessica Rashama, Sibusisiwe Parirenyatwa and Matthew van Rooijen.

Zain Kaka achieved a national ranking within the top 5% in six or more subjects, placing him on the IEB Outstanding Achievement List. Five students - Shikaar Singh and Nokukhanya Vundla from Reddford House Blue Hills, and Zoe Phumo, Jessica Rashama and Lameez Madhi from Reddford House Northcliff - were recognised in the top 1% of IEB candidates per subject nationally. Reddford House Northcliff’s 54 Class of 2023 students achieved 75 subject distinctions, giving an average of 1.39 distinctions per student. They achieved a 100% pass rate and 91% bachelor pass rate, with an overall average of 65.68%.

Teneo outperforms national pass rates Teneo’s 2023 Matric pass rate soared to 91.1% for the IEB examination board, an increase of 4.5%, and also increased by 3% to 81.3% for the SACAI examination board. Teneo’s 81.3% pass rate exceeded, by 9.4%, the SACAI national average of 71.8% for all online schools & distance education providers. Bachelor’s degree passes jump 71.9% of Teneo’s IEB Matriculants achieved a Bachelor’s pass (i.e. university entrance), up 9% on 2022.

Teneo’s SACAI Matriculants accounted for 24.9% of all SACAI Bachelor’s pass students. Navigating life after school The opportunities & challenges As the Class of 2023 embarks on the journey beyond school, and the Class of 2024 prepare to do so next year, these young people stand at the crossroads of exciting opportunities, daunting challenges and significantly, a bucket of options that can quickly entangle them in analysis paralysis. Leaving behind the familiar halls of high school, they enter a new chapter of their lives which is filled with a range of possibilities that will shape their futures. However, these possibilities also come with their own difficulties and risks. “After school, you will be faced with numerous choices and options, each of which will shape and impact your future journey. Understanding an overview of the main paths generally embarked upon by young people, as well as the most salient challenges, can help guide these important decisions,” says Peter Kriel, General Manager at The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s leading private higher education provider. Higher Education Pathways One of the most common and rewarding opportunities for school leavers is to pursue higher education. Higher education institutions, both public and private, offer a gateway to in-depth learning and a platform for personal and intellectual growth. “A higher education qualification also provides a competitive edge in the job market, as employers generally prefer candidates with relevant qualifications and skills. However, not all higher education institutions provide equal value, so it is important to match your vision for your life to an institution most likely to help you realise that vision,” says Kriel. “Whether you decide to go public or private, make sure that your chosen university has industry-relevant, up-to-date curricula, excellent facilities, and smaller classes, which will enhance the
learning experience and outcomes.” School leavers should carefully research and compare the different options available to them and choose an institution that best suits their needs and goals. Vocational Training and Skill Development Another opportunity for school leavers is to pursue vocational training and skill development, notes Kriel. “In a world that increasingly values practical skills, vocational training provides an alternative route to furthering your education. School leavers can pursue courses that equip them with specific, job-ready skills, enhancing their employability in various industries. Although many roles require a degree, there are also rewarding positions that can be accessed with a vocational training qualification under your belt,” Kriel notes. Entrepreneurial Ventures Some school leavers may have an entrepreneurial spirit and choose to start their own business. “The rapidly evolving business landscape encourages innovation, making it an opportune time for those with a vision to carve their niche. Entrepreneurial ventures can also offer school leavers a unique platform for innovation, personal development, and the potential to make a lasting impact,” Kriel says. However, he warns that entrepreneurial ventures also come with significant challenges, such as financial uncertainty, the impact of the entrepreneur’s limited experience, and market competition.“Navigating this path requires a combination of determination, adaptability, and a willingness to learn from both successes and setbacks. Therefore, school leavers who choose this option should be prepared to face both the risks and rewards of entrepreneurship. And even though you may not at this stage wish to pursue further education, one thing that all outstanding entrepreneurs have in common is a commitment to lifelong learning. “So, consider doing distance studies or shorter courses to bolster your knowledge in those areas that will help boost your business.”
Entering the workforce For some young people, there are logistical or financial barriers to furthering their education or embarking on entrepreneurship, which means they will aim to enter the workforce straight after school. “Unfortunately, given SA’s high unemployment rates, these candidates will face stiff competition for entry-level positions. We would recommend that these young people do everything possible to continue their academic journey and develop their skillset, by investigating relevant part-time short courses or online courses. This will demonstrate to employers that you are serious about your career and your future and may open up opportunities down the line. “Also be sure to regularly check in and speak to your manager or HR about your development plans and goals. Many companies offer deserving candidates subsidised opportunities for further study and professional development.” Global Opportunities The interconnected global economy opens doors for school leavers to explore opportunities beyond borders. International internships, exchange programmes, and remote work options allow them to gain exposure to diverse cultures and working environments. “It is also a sound strategy to ensure that if you are in the position to take advantage of global opportunities after leaving school, you are able to align the opportunity to your future vision and endeavours. Take the time to develop those skills that you can build upon later, so that your time spent abroad provides a strong base for future endeavours.”

Curro Online Celebrates Impressive Matric Examinations Debut Curro Holdings, the JSE-listed independent education provider, is proud to announce the success of its first-ever Independent Examinations Board (IEB) class at Curro Online. Out of the 2,296 matriculants who undertook the 2023 IEB matric exam at Curro, an impressive cohort of 69 learners hailed from Curro Online. The top three notable achievers were Annalize Lochner who triumphed with an excellent 85% average, Arvai Ramdhunee who achieved an outstanding 84% and David Jesse Rootman who secured a 80% average. Faith Njau, Executive Head of Curro Online, expressed her heartfelt congratulations, stating, “As our first matric class, this group of learners will always be special. Each of them has done exceptionally well and should be very proud of their hard work and focus, which has finally paid off. A huge congratulations to our inaugural class of 2023, you have set the bar incredibly high for the next year of learners.” Curro Online launched in 2020 as a fully online school during the height of the Covid-19 lockdown with 300 learners and has now grown to over 600 learners. The innovative offering has made Curro’s robust curriculum accessible to primary and high school learners across South Africa and abroad. Classes take place in small groups through live online lessons facilitated by a team of dedicated teachers and are scheduled according to a structured timetable, with learners having access to digital material and recorded lessons online at any time of day. The outstanding results achieved by the inaugural matric class at Curro Online showcase the effectiveness of this pioneering online education platform.
