NEW NAME; SAME INCREDIBLE FOREST ADVENTURE

Monkeyland-KZN, the largest free-roaming primate sanctuary in Africa, opened to the public in 2019. Since then, over 25,000 people, including hundreds of school children, have been on a truly unique adventure by joining one of their walking tours through their “hidden forest”. The sanctuary is currently rebranding and now has a new name which more accurately reflects the experience – The Hidden Forest Wildlife Sanctuary.

Whilst the sanctuary’s main work is the rehabilitation of captive-raised lemurs, exotic monkeys (such as capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys and spider monkeys) and gibbons, a walk through the stunning 23-hectare indigenous forest is so much more than that. The forest is full of breathtaking flora and fauna – trees that are used in traditional Zulu medicine, bush buck, red and blue duiker, banded mongoose and the most incredible birdlife, including rare species such as the norina trogan and african broadbill.

Your adventure starts with a short drive on an open-top vehicle to the hidden forest. You’ll explore this stunning 23-hectare indigenous forest on a guided walking tour, a truly unique and unforgettable experience. You might see ring-tailed lemurs soaking up the sun or capuchins and squirrel monkeys foraging for insects, maybe you’ll even hear the call of the black howler monkey; the loudest land mammal in the world. The Hidden Forest Wildlife Sanctuary is a true sanctuary and, therefore, has a strict no touching policy; this ensures that the animals in their care don’t feel threatened by the presence of visitors and don’t have to perform for them either – a truly safe place for these animals to live as natural a life as possible. Here you’ll have a unique opportunity to see the primates behaving as they would in the wild, marking their territories, forming social bonds and foraging.

The sanctuary reception site on the Glendale Road has a large, secure parking lot, gift shop, toilet facilities, prayer room, children’s jungle gym and licensed pizza restaurant.

Located just 16kms from exit 222 of the N2, The Hidden Forest Wildlife Sanctuary is a must-do outing whether you’re looking for a day out for friends and family or the perfect balance of fun and education for your school group.

Evidence of his leadership skills, Dylan was also a prefect and head of Gillingham House. Kearsney old boy and guest speaker Dr Michael Cardo urged the boys to become active, engaged citizens. His advice to those finishing school was to do something that “makes a difference” and to always strive “to put in more than you take out” in all aspects of life. Dr Cardo matriculated from Kearsney in 1994 where he was an outstanding academic and public speaker; before his remarkable achievements at the Universities of Natal (BA Summa Cum Laude in

PINETOWN BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL Rugby

British Football Academy

Kwanda Mhlongo was inspired by his sister to play rugby as she was playing rugby at the time, he’s a grade 10 learner and is involved in interact and Marketing at the school. He made 1st team last year and since he has made u.18 KZN schools rugby, he also plays for Westville Old boys rugby club where he was Player of the year and he also made Duikers u.18 which is the provincial side for club rugby.

Pinetown Boys’ High School has started a venture, with being host to the British Football Academy. Myself (Mr. Madikizela) and Mr. Mnganga are former learners at Pinetown boys’ High School and served in its leadership as Head Prefect (Mr. Madikizela) and Head of grade 11 (Mr. Mnganga) in 2013, we have been best friends for 21 years and schooled together from primary school days.

our coaches with the training programme once a month, and former Spurs and England international, Andy Sinton, has also been signed up as the BFA’s UK ambassador. Andy has committed to run a week long training programme at PBHS for all of the scholars each year.

After 10 years we returned to PBHS as Director of Sport (Mr. Madikizela) and Chief Coach of the British Football Academy (Mr. Mnganga), we both played a lot of sport and pursued a career in sport which was inspired during our time at PBHS. It is not only an honour but a privilege to be able to facilitate this partnership and create opportunities for young men. About British football Academy: The British Football Academy is coming to Durban. Set up by three English businessmen (John Read and Peter Coyle, based in London and Ian Kilbride, based in Cape Town) the BFA is determined to create a pathway to the English Premier League for talented young South Africans. A collaboration has been established with Pinetown Boys High School which will see 15 new football scholars start at the school in January. Recruited across KZN by Chief Coach, Siya Mnganga, these 15 talented footballers (aged between 14-16) will be educated and trained in an elite football environment on a fully funded basis. All three founders are passionate about football and about education. Education is the lifeblood of opportunity – and sport, football in particular, can change lives and whole communities. Players from the whole of the world find their way to the English Premier League, but very few South Africans. The BFA is determined to change that and give new opportunities for local boys who have the talent, drive and hunger to succeed as professional footballers. The BFA is not tied to any British Club, so it is truly independent. The strength of the founders’ sporting network gives them ready access to trials across all four professional divisions in England. Plans are afoot to bring an academy team from Everton to Pinetown Boys High in 2024, and then the same from West Ham in 2025. The BFA have signed up two Ambassadors to help create the elite football environment needed to create professional pathways to the UK. Ex Orlando Pirates star Daine Klate will support

Mr. S. Mnganga (Chief Coach of BFA), Peter Coyle (one of the Founders of BFA) and Mr. Z. Madikizela (Director of Sport PBHS).

WATERFALL COLLEGE Class of 2023 On 13 October, Waterfall College celebrated its Class of 2023 at the annual Speech Day. Guest speaker, Waylon Murray (Former Springbok Rugby Player and current Sports Director at Kearsney College) reminded guests that life will have its challenges, but there is value in the wisdom of those around you. “Allow God to be in control - His plans are better than you can imagine.” He continued to say, once you have earned your own wisdom, “don’t hold back - help others become the best that they can be!” Wise words that we can all learn from. Congratulations to all the prize winners.

CURRO HILLCREST Leadership Team of 2024 We had a very special ceremony where the Leadership team of 2024 were presented to the school and their parents took part in a ceremony. The Custodians each signed the Leadership pledge with their parents and received a special sash that goes around their neck. The symbolism of the sash is similar to the Blazer that it is a covering from the school. Management and the Staff of Curro Hillcrest cover and embrace them with the sash that goes around their neck like a medal. They have earned this, and authority is handed to them. We are very excited for what lies ahead for this newly appointed group of Custodians.

Swimming Congratulations to Megan Stewart who was selected to represent South Africa at the BRICS Games currently being held in Durban. Megan swam in the 4x100m relay, she made the final for the 400m freestyle where she came 9th and she made the final for the 200m I.M in which she came 6th. This is an outstanding achievement for a Grade 11 pupil and we are incredibly proud of her. Well done!

CHELSEA PREPARATORY SCHOOL Chelsea Prep’s Inaugural Choir and Band Tour: A Resounding Success Chelsea Preparatory School’s Choir and Band embarked on an unforgettable journey on 20 October 2023 as 71 of our senior primary pupils and 4 dedicated staff members set off on the school’s first-ever choir and band tour. The destination? The picturesque Champagne Valley in the central Drakensberg, where an extraordinary musical and team-building adventure awaited. The highlight of the tour was an inspiring visit to the world-renowned Drakensberg Boys’ Choir, where our pupils and staff had the privilege of participating in a choral workshop. During this enlightening session, participants learned parts and movements to the iconic South African song, “Shosholoza,” while also gaining insights into various breathing exercises and singing techniques. The culmination of this tour was the opportunity for Chelsea Prep’s choir and band to perform on an international stage alongside the award-winning and internationally acclaimed Drakensberg Boys’

Choir. The performance was nothing short of exceptional, with our talented students impressing the audience with two remarkable songs during the first half of the show. The evening reached its emotional peak as the Chelsea Prep Choir, the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir, and the audience joined together to deliver a stirring rendition of “Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika,” accompanied by a majestic pipe organ. The event concluded with the two choirs joining forces to perform “Shosholoza,” often dubbed as South Africa’s second national anthem. “This tour has left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of our students, who will carry these experiences and memories with them for years to come. We are immensely proud of the dedication and efforts of our choir and band, and we look forward to more extraordinary musical journeys in the future.” Ryan Smith, Performing Arts Educator. Lions-beurs Toekenning

We’re thrilled to share the incredible achievements of our talented learners, Erin Meumann from grade 11 and Nadine Smit from grade 8, at the MOVE National Dance Competition in Cape Town from September 29th to October 1st. Erin and Nadine, along with their contemporary group, had previously secured first place in regionals, which was a remarkable accomplishment in itself.

Nadine also participated in a musical theater quartet, which clinched first place in regionals and qualified in the SILVER category for Nationals. The quartet didn’t just qualify; they soared to the top, securing the FIRST place at the Nationals.

Musical Congratulations to Nsukezinhle Chiliza for his outstanding performance as Lord Farquaad in the musical at Amanzimtoti High School! It’s not every day that you come across such phenomenal talent, and Nsukezinhle truly shone as Lord Farquaad. This VWD Directors Trophy is well-deserved, and it’s a testament to his dedication and hard work. Keep reaching for the stars, Nsukezinhle, and may your future be as bright as your performance!

Take action against bullying!

In light of Anti-Bullying Week that took place from 1317 November, we shed the light against the concerning trend of bullying in schools. Bullying in schools is a concerning trend. It almost always leads to behavioural problems, diminished academic performance, and unfortunately, even suicide. “Understanding the impact of bullying on a scholar’s mental health has gained increased importance for teachers, guardians, and parents. This understanding is crucial for the sake of the scholar’s psychological well-being and academic development,” says Nkazimulo Zitha, head of School Achievement at SPARK Schools. Bullying is defined as unwanted aggressive behaviour and usually occurs when there is a power imbalance between people. When it becomes repetitive, it can inflict significant harm upon the victim. The five types of bullying: Physical – this is the most common form of bullying. It involves physical actions like pushing, tripping, kicking, hitting, spitting on, or destruction of a child’s property on purpose. Verbal – these bullies almost always operate when adults are not around. They will make fun of their victims, tease them, call them names, insult them, and verbally intimidate them. Cyberbullying – this happens in the digital space, on computers, smartphones, social media, texts, and instant messaging. Relational – this bully is usually set on increasing their own social standing by diminishing the standing of another scholar

through humiliation, spreading lies, and exclusion.

Prejudicial – bullies target factors like race, religion, sexual orientation, or social standing. Zitha says the long-term effects of bullying on a scholar’s mental health must not be underestimated. “Research has shown that being a victim of bullying can lead to longer-term impacts including interpersonal violence, substance use, sexual violence, poor social functioning, and poor performance. Being bullied at a young age can affect someone well past childhood and can cause lifelong psychological damage,” she says. Warning signs to look out for if you suspect a scholar in your care is being bullied are changes in sleep patterns, loss of appetite, frequent tears and mood swings, unexplained bruises and scratches, damaged belongings, coming home hungry, not wanting to go to school and deteriorating academic performance. “Teach your children the difference between bullying and teasing. While the line can be subtle, it’s crucial for them to grasp that persistent teasing can qualify as bullying”.
