Welcome to Citywing We are delighted to welcome you on board your flight today, and thank you for choosing Citywing. Since I last wrote, the aviation world on the Isle of Man has not come out of its position of uncertainty, and there is currently no confirmed double daily service to London, a route vital to the Isle of Man economy. It has been announced that Flybe is to shed 500 jobs and shut the Isle of Man base. I have made my position very clear, firmly believing the Isle of Man is best served by the frequent services of Flybe and not the ‘when we can fit you in’ services of easyJet. I can appreciate that passengers would rather have choice, but in a finite market competition can sometimes not be a good thing. All that really happens in the end is those with the bigger purse strings win. This happened with Flybe on Eastern Airways and EuroManx, and now the same is happening to them. Some believe we would have lost the London Gatwick service anyway, and it is lucky that we have easyJet to at least provide some level of service; however, if Flybe had been making money on the London Gatwick route, they could have just transferred services to another London Airport. Hopefully Flybe will still keep aircraft on the Isle of Man and service Liverpool and Manchester, as these are certainly essential routes to and from the Island.

With regards to charters or groups, we are in a position to offer services to and from most airports within the United Kingdom and Ireland, at very favourable rates compared to other companies offering similar services. We can usually tailor services to meet your needs. For more details and prices email scc@ citywing.com. May I take this opportunity to thank you for supporting Citywing and hope you have found the service met your expectations. We aim for excellence throughout the whole process, from the website, check in, flight experience and afterwards, whether it be just collecting baggage and departing the airport, to dealing with a member of the Citywing team. We continually strive to improve our service, so we would ask you to fill in the questionnaire in the seat pocket if you have time to give us feedback. We will always listen to your views, whether positive or negative; it is good to praise people for delivering excellent service, but it is also important to rectify any issues that may arise. We hope to welcome you aboard again in the not too distant future. 3

Going back to easyJet, they have made their statement of intent clear to me with regards to the services they will provide by dropping some flights in the summer to use the aircraft for other more profitable routes. EasyJet are first and foremost an organisation to make money for shareholders. It may be a conception that they start a route and continue to operate, however they actually cease many routes each year. With average load factors across their network nearing 90%, this must be their target for the Isle of Man. I will leave it at that. In all this turmoil, we have been quietly getting on with our first year of business. The number of opportunities that have been put our way is surprising, the big stumbling block really being the tax of £13 per passenger for each flight. We have been strongly lobbying UK Government for the removal of this tax and will continue to do so. If this imposition was removed it would certainly make most of the opportunities viable so, if successful, this would certainly make life very interesting and busy. It could even lead to the return of the Leeds Bradford service, fingers crossed! Many of you have already liked our Facebook page and followed us on Twitter. If you haven’t yet, please do as that is where you’ll find our most up to date information and, from time-to-time, offers.

Enchanted Christmas at Westonbirt Arboretum Take a magical stroll through illuminated trees this Christmas at Westonbirt Arboretum. Westonbirt’s signature winter event, inspires festive cheer with an illuminated one mile tree-lined trail through the arboretum. The spectacle takes place every Friday, Saturday & Sunday evening until Sunday 22 December. The magical event started with Real reindeer accompanied by two elves and Father Christmas who switched on the spectacular lighting design. The centrepiece of the event is a spectacular one mile illuminated trail highlighting the striking structures of Westonbirt’s trees lit up against the winter night sky. Each year a lighting design is created so visitors can experience different specimens, paths and vistas in the tree collection. As well as enjoying the majestic beauty of the towering trees lit by thousands of festive lights, visitors can meet Father Christmas dressed in traditional green, along with festive stilt-walkers including Jack Frost, the Christmas Fairy and a very tall reindeer and join in with the carol singing performed by local choirs.

Running right through until 2014, NewcastleGateshead’s Winter Festival brings with it a range of events to celebrate winter in the city, with many of the destination’s best-loved venues also boasting some exciting entertainment on offer. Festive Events and Entertainment For a fun and festive break from Christmas shopping, Skating @ Life takes place until 23 February 2014, and sees an outdoor ice rink installed at Newcastle’s Life Science Centre. After enjoying a skate, visitors can warm up with a delicious hot chocolate, meal or snack in the Times Square Cafe. www.life.org.uk Over at Theatre Royal, it wouldn’t be the festive season without a ‘giant pantomime spectacular’ – this year’s being Jack and the Beanstalk, running until 18 January 2014. Theatre Royal favourites Clive Webb, Danny Adams and Chris Hayward return for a performance packed with an abundance of laughter, spectacular sets and stunning costumes - and some very magical beans! www. theatreroyal.co.uk For a slightly darker festive tale, Northern Stage presents Dark Woods, Deep Snow: A Grimm Tale for Christmas, taking place from 02 – 28 December. At the darkest time, on the longest night, as the real winter starts to close in, something is happening - in the Extremely Secret House in the Woods a rag-tag band of super heroic outcasts are ready to do battle with the gathering darkness. Like the Grimms before them, their quest is to rescue stories and bring them home, but they may need the help of the audience. A story of friendship, betrayal, light and dark in a raucous Christmas adventure full of songs, snow and more than little bit of festive chaos. Visit: www.northernstage.co.uk

15

At Sage Gateshead, Royal Northern Sinfonia’s Festive Concert returns 14-15 December, complete with Chorus led by the wonderful Simon Halsey. Expect seasonal music and plenty of well-known carols to join in with. If that’s not enough, The Snowman has become something of a winter tradition at Sage Gateshead in recent years. Take all the family along on 23, 24 and 27 December to watch the classic animated film on the big screen, accompanied live by Royal Northern Sinfonia playing Howard Blake’s score, while a chorister sings Walking in the Air – a magical experience for all. Department encourages engagement with International Festival for Business 2014

T

HE Department of Economic Development is encouraging local businesses to participate in the International Festival for Business, which is being held in Liverpool during June and July next year. The Festival is set to attract 250,000 professionals from 125 countries and the Department is planning to showcase the Isle of Man’s diverse, successful economy. Minister for Economic Development John Shimmin MHK commented: ‘In line with delivering the Government’s ‘Agenda for Change in Our Economy’ which sets out priorities for delivering economic growth we are committed to forging new sustainable relationships with other countries and business partners. The International Festival for Business will be a unique opportunity for the Isle of Man to showcase our status as an international business centre at a major global business event being held right on our doorstep.

30

‘In addition to our geographical and historical connections with the region, and with Liverpool in particular, the Isle of Man is a significant contributor to the North West’s economy.

The Minister continued: ‘Given the range of sectors incorporated within the Festival it is highly appropriate for the Isle of Man to be involved. Many firms in the Island compete successfully against the very best in the world in their respective sectors so I would encourage them to consider engaging with the Festival. ‘We have developed a project team from within existing resources to manage our planned attendance at this event and they have started to engage with the business community in order to highlight the benefits of participation.’ Max Steinberg CBE, Chairman of the International Festival for Business 2014 and Chief Executive of Liverpool Vision has confirmed he will be visiting the Isle of Man for a second time in early November and will be making a presentation to the local business community. Any interested parties such as businesses, local trade organisations or professional associations who want to know how to get involved with the International Festival for Business 2014 should email ifb@gov.im

‘My Department also continues to maintain a wide range of relationships with the North West, such as the Isle of Man Aerospace Cluster’s membership of the North West Aerospace Alliance and the Isle of Man Ship Registry’s membership of Mersey Maritime.’ The Festival will take place across Liverpool and the surrounding areas over 50 days next June and July and will feature events for professional and financial services, maritime, logistics and energy, manufacturing, science and technology, low carbon and renewables and creative and digital amongst others. Over 100 separate events are being hosted, attracting 250,000 delegates from both developed and emerging markets such as China, India, United Arab Emirates, and the United States. The International Festival for Business also has the full backing of the UK Government, being publicly endorsed by Prime Minister David Cameron. Minister for Economic Development John Shimmin MHK >

Strength of Visitor Economy consolidated during 2013

T

HE Minister for Economic Development John Shimmin MHK has reiterated his Department’s support for the visitor economy and the successes enjoyed to date during 2013. He commented: ‘The figures we have seen and the feedback we are receiving from industry suggest that 2013 has been another encouraging year for the visitor economy with visitor numbers up so far consolidating the successes we enjoyed in 2012. ‘We enjoyed a good run in 2012 with overall visitor expenditure increasing by just over 5% to £103M over the figures for 2011, with expenditure by Leisure Visitors increasing by 14% to £47.7M.’ The statistics were consistent with the Department’s strategic aim of exploiting high value niche markets, driving up quality and developing the Island as a yearround destination. Two local accommodation providers also commented on how their businesses had fared in the year to date. Shirley Clague, Manager of the Edelweiss Hotel, commented: ‘We have had a very busy year with our bookings showing a very pleasing 25% increase on recent years, with next year already starting to fill up. There are many great new events bringing people to us from all over the world, which would give any top destination a run for their money!’ Sue Goody of Old Lonan Church Farm Cottages added: ‘We have five self-catering cottages and have seen an 11.7 % increase in visitor numbers this year with an encouraging trend of new people coming to the Island for the first time. Already we are seeing a healthy level of returnees and new visitor booking for 2014.’ To help boost visitor numbers the Department has created and supported new events. The most successful of these was the Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling which incorporated the new Classic TT and the popular Manx Grand Prix Races. The Steam Packet reported recently that visitor numbers for the inaugural Festival of Motorcycling were 4% up on the same period in 2012. This followed a successful 2013 TT Races with a Treasury survey showing a significant increase, over a three-year period, in the economic contribution that the TT Races makes to the Island’s economy.

The study has revealed that almost 40,000 (39,224) visitors attended the 2013 TT Races, a 27% increase on the 2010 figure (30,787). The total spending of TT visitors in 2013 was £26.2 million compared with £19 million in 2010. Treasury has assessed the economic contribution of this figure to be £18.9 million with an exchequer benefit of £3.5 million, which represent rises of £5.2 million and £900,000 respectively. One of the Department’s main roles is promoting the Isle of Man and the Minister alluded to some of the excellent publicity received during the year: He said: ‘My Department has been responsible getting the Isle of Man featured in nearly all of the national newspapers this year as well as several key UK regional titles and specialist magazines. We also directly assist with the production of TV programmes like the BBC’s ‘James May’s Toy Stories’ which is due to be shown to millions of UK viewers during Christmas this year and which is also broadcast worldwide. This will be hugely valuable publicity for the Isle of Man, which already totals around £1M to date this year. The Minister continued: ‘We have achieved this publicity with fantastic support from local accommodation providers, activity providers, restaurants and cafes, all of whom have proved to be tremendous hosts. Together they have enabled these key opinion formers to enjoy what the Island has to offer.

31

More traditional tourism markets such as Group Travel market have also shown encouraging signs during the year. There are already 10 cruise liner visits booked for 2014 with 18 cruise ships arriving here in 2013. The Department is also liaising with over 200 coach tour operators with a view to including the Isle of Man in future itineraries. Airedale Tours, a major Tour Operator based in the UK which specialises in the Groups Market, is bringing over approximately 55 Group Travel organisers at the end of October with the aim of booking group holidays to the Isle of Man in the future. As part of its support to industry the Department is hosting a networking event so that the local suppliers to the Group Travel industry can showcase their products and services at no charge.

The increase was driven by a rise in visitor numbers, and a higher per-head spend while visitors are on the Island. The research was carried out at the 2013 TT Races and compared with data collected during the 2010 meeting. DEC 2013 / JAN 2014 | WWW.CITYWING.COM

Business Review 50% INCREASE IN VISITORS FOR ISLE OF MAN FESTIVAL OF MOTORCYCLING

A

study by the Isle of Man Government’s Treasury Economic Affairs Division (EAD) into the contribution that the Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling makes to the Island’s economy has shown an increase in visitors of approximately 50% over a fouryear period. The Treasury originally surveyed the Manx Grand Prix in 2009 before replicating the study this year at the inaugural Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling which included the newly created Classic TT, the Manx Grand Prix, the VMCC Festival of Jurby and the Classic and Two Day Trials. The research revealed an overall increase in visitors to 13,407 for the August event, compared to 8915 in 2009. The study showed that these visitors spent a total of £8.4M compared with £4.9M in 2009 and that this is contributed £1M to the Exchequer.

32

While there was a significant 37% increase in all forms of sea passengers - foot, motorcycle

and other vehicles - the notable increase was in air traffic, which was up 172% to 2,346 this year from 860 during the same period in 2009. Figures supplied by Ronaldsway airport show that the air traffic growth was particularly significant in the last year, with a reported 11.6% increase* in visitors compared with the same period in 2012. As with 2009, the majority of visitors were from England (80%) with campsites (31%) proving the most popular type of accommodation although 20% of visitors were revealed to have stayed in hotels. Laurence Skelly MHK, the Political Member responsible for motorsport at the Department of Economic Development commented: ‘The survey has given the Department some excellent data in measuring the work that has been carried out over the last four years

to generate more visitors to the August Motorcycling Festival.’ He continued: ‘The survey has shown that there has been a significant increase in visitors to the event and the economic contribution that the festival now delivers. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank all of our event partners, the race officials and marshals as well as other Government departments on what is a major success story. ‘We will now look to build on this success to ensure the longterm viability of the Festival and to generate the highest possible contribution to the Island’s economy.’ A full copy of the Isle of Man Treasury Festival of Motorcycling 2013 report can be downloaded from www.gov.im/categories/travel,traffic-and-motoring/passengersurvey

*A total of 33,792 passengers 2013 travelled to Ronaldsway between 17th and 30th August 2013 compared with 30,254 passengers between 18th and 31st in 2012.
