Citywing steeped in history! What? I hear you ask is he talking about, Citywing are only 2 years old. Yes, this is true however, we do have some interesting historic facts that we are proud to be associated with. Firstly, of course is our return to Blackpool. Widely published in March with a commencement on the 1st April, the route from Ronaldsway on the Isle of Man was one of the first to be operated from there. History on this service dates back to around 1933 when it was operated by the then West Coast Air Services. The route has changed hands many times but still remains one of the most popular from the Northwest and one that we are once again, proud to serve. We were the last schedule service from the airport and now we are the first back! Blackpool itself is knee deep in history. The Pleasure Beach is the oldest in the UK. First opened in 1896, it is still the most visited tourist attraction in the UK. I myself shall be enjoying the thrills of this particular park now that the route is open and might even take the children!

We are also very much aware that without you, our passengers, we would not be here and for your continued support we are very thankful. We have a packed magazine for you to enjoy today with some new features including the introduction of our company mascot, Wirley. So please sit back, relax and enjoy your flight and we hope to see you again very soon.

As part of our marketing relationship with Manx Radio, we carry out a series of outside broadcasts throughout the year to be aired on the Alex in the Afternoon show. As we provide services to the most destinations from the island, we do many outside broadcasts a year. These broadcasts are extremely important for promoting our routes and give the listener a great insight into what they can do once they land at our destinations. Recent visits have included Belfast, where we partook in a historic pub tour including the beautiful Crown pub which was renamed and opened in 1885 and still contains its original Victoriana and gas lights. Kelly Cellars built in 1720 was another tour stop and said to be where the Easter rising of 1798 was planned. Next was Gloucester including a visit to Cheltenham. Gloucester cathedral is stunning, dates back to 678 and was used as a location for the Harry Potter films. We went to Sudeley castle near Cheltenham, and it is still used as a private residence and dates back to the 12th century. It is where Katherine Parr, king Henry VIII sixth wife is buried and is a fascinating site to visit. As we grow, we have realised that we had a gap to fill in our company structure. I’m delighted to announce that Donna Sloane has now been appointed as Sales and Marketing Manager. Donna brings with her a wealth of experience in the airline field having first been recruited by Manx Airlines in 1991. Donna will oversee all of our PR work, marketing and sales initiatives and I am sure you will join me in welcoming her on board!

BLACKPOOL IS BACK, AND IT’S NO APRIL FOOL!

8

Citywing will be reinstating double daily flights between the Isle of Man and Blackpool from 1st April 2015.

‘We would like to extend our thanks to the UK Civil Aviation Authority and both Airports for their assistance in bringing these discussions and plans to a positive conclusion.

Following the sudden closure of Blackpool Airport last October, Citywing and the Airport owners have worked tirelessly to ensure that commercial flights can commence once again between Blackpool and the Isle of Man.

‘There is so much to see and do in Blackpool throughout the year. It is also a gateway to the North West and the very popular Lake District, Yorkshire and Cumbria areas. The Island will benefit hugely from this additional North West route as we welcome thousands of visitors from these regions every year.

Managing Director at Citywing, David Buck, said: ‘We are so pleased by this positive conclusion to our negotiations with Blackpool and that it will be open once again for flights to the Isle of Man and Belfast from 1st April. We have remained committed to seeing this historic and vital air link to Blackpool reopen, and we are hugely satisfied to once again be able to offer this route to our customers.

‘Our “Blackpool Hopper” fares start from just £23.95 each way and are bookable online at citywing.com. ‘With 14 return journeys each week to choose from, we are delighted that the many thousands of passengers who have flown on this route previously will once again have a cheap and frequent lifeline air link between the communities of the Isle of Man and North-West England.’

Citywing have announced a further increase on their flights between the Isle of Man and Glasgow for summer 2015. Now offering 11 return flights a week from 01 May, Citywing are providing the Island’s community with a regular and frequent direct service to further strengthen the link between the two Celtic Communities. Offering the only direct route and the guaranteed lowest fares for flights between Scotland and the Island, prices start from just £49.95 including all taxes and charges. With such a wide and varied range of things to do, Glasgow is the perfect choice for a getaway city break, whether it is shopping, visiting a museum, catching the annual jazz festival or just relaxing in one of the many bars and restaurants. Glasgow International Airport also offers travellers an alternative hub to connect to onward worldwide destinations with minimum fuss. David Buck, Managing Director at Citywing, said: ‘We are delighted to be able to increase our services to Glasgow this summer and believe we have covered all the bases with the changes in our scheduling. Our business passengers can now take advantage of a day return whilst the leisure traveller can enjoy short breaks off the Island with weekend travel now being more available. With support from the Isle of Man Government, we will also be promoting the Island as a destination in Glasgow, which will be a further benefit to the Island.’ Paul White, Business Development Manager at Glasgow Airport, said: ‘We were delighted when Citywing decided to reinstate this important business and tourism link in 2014. It is very encouraging to see Citywing increasing the number of flights it operates, which just goes to show how successful the route has been with our customer base. We wish Citywing continued success with this route, which offers the only direct route between Scotland and the Isle of Man, and look forward to working closely with the airline to ensure its continued success at Glasgow Airport.’ Citywing offers direct fares from the Isle of Man to Glasgow from as little as £49.95 each way, with services increasing from May 1st 2015.

Ron Spencer, Chairman of Diana Princess of Wales Care at Home Trust, and David Buck, Managing Director of Citywing

CITYWING NAMES DIANA PRINCESS OF WALES CARE AT HOME TRUST AS 2015 NOMINATED CHARITY Citywing is delighted to announce that it has chosen the Diana Princess of Wales Care at Home Trust as its nominated charity for 2015, providing them with 24 return tickets to use for fundraising during the year on all Citywing routes to and from the Island. The Isle of Man-based charity funds nursing staff to provide respite care and end-of-life palliative care for Island residents with cancer, or other life-limiting illnesses, where curative treatment is no longer possible or appropriate, and who choose to remain at home in their last days; in effect, to provide a ‘Hospice at Home’ service.

9

David Buck, Managing Director of Citywing said: ‘We are very pleased to name the Diana Princess of Wales Care at Home Trust as our chosen charity for 2015 and to be able to support them in a number of ways throughout the year. ‘This dedicated and worthwhile local charity provides vital services for our Island’s community, and we are honoured to work alongside them to raise awareness of these services, and raise the money to help ensure that they continue. In addition to 24 return tickets we’ll also be calling on our partners for help with some fundraising favourites, including the famous sponsored plane pull event.’ Ron Spencer, Chairman of Diana Princess of Wales Care at Home Trust, said: ‘We are so pleased to be working with Citywing as their nominated charity for the year. Funds raised help to provide high quality nursing care and support to individual patients, their families, friends and carers. ‘We currently help to provide nearly 1,000 hours of care for patients each year, allowing them to be nursed in the comfort of their own home. Our services are increasingly relied upon and we are always aiming to provide as much as help as we can, and in as many ways as possible; View our latest Offers as well as respite care and end of life care we aim to provide support of all kinds, including physical, emotional, psychological, social and spiritual. Fundraising is vital for any charity, and Citywing’s generous support will be a facebook.com/CityWing fantastic help in ensuring that we can continue to provide twitter.com/MyCityWing “Hospice at Home” help to those in need.’

Board the Ships Making their Gloucester Tall Ships debuts are the brigantine Morganster, handmade schooner Atyla and Baltic trawler Keewaydin (more announcements to follow). For the first time, the ships are open all day on the Saturday, Sunday AND Monday, so there won‘t be any ship enthusiasts left high and dry. Exploring Gloucester

With the proximity of the Docks to the City Centre, there are several attractions only 10 minutes walk away. Voted Britain’s second favourite historic attraction by Which? Travel Magazine last September, Gloucester Cathedral is a must for any fan of ancient buildings and Harry Potter fanatics (the fan vaulted cloisters doubled for the corridors of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry). Nearby is the House of The Tailor of Gloucester, a small museum that celebrates Beatrix Potter and one of her best-loved books. There’s also Gloucester Folk Museum set in a beautifullyrestored Tudor townhouse, and Gloucester City Museum & Art Gallery which boasts sections of the actual Roman city wall (both are closed on Sunday & Monday).

Jump over to Jersey! Jersey has everything that is ideal for a family holiday - safe, clean beaches, country walks, attractions and sports that appeal to all ages. Jersey lies 100 miles south of mainland Britain, only 14 miles from the coast of France and has one of the best sunshine records in the British Isles. With over 350 miles of roads and country lanes to explore, as well as over 20 beaches and coves, Jersey‘s spectacular scenery takes you from sweeping bays in the south to dramatic cliffs in the north. Within this compact island there are so many things to see and do. For many, the greatest attraction is the coastline. Ranging from the towering cliffs in the north to the Atlantic rollers of the windy west or the long swathes of golden sand in the south, nowhere in Jersey is more than two miles from the sea. Don’t neglect inland, though – pretty countryside, old stone farmhouses and beautiful flowers attract visitors from miles around, year after year.

Getting around in Jersey is both easy and convenient. For maximum flexibility, you should hire a car, so that you can seek out the hidden beaches, explore the glorious coastline and find some off the beaten track places which make up a perfect Jersey holiday. Even without a car, you can make use of the extensive bus network around the island which will take you to most of the main places of interest. For the more energetic, take to two wheels and hire a bicycle to explore the Green Lanes, but don’t forget that one of the very best ways of getting around is on foot! For more information visit:

www.jersey.com

For one small island, Jersey certainly has a number of interesting and often surprising features.. 24

Jersey is just 9 miles wide and 5 miles long The island has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world and at low tide its surface area increases by a fifth! Jersey‘s Spring Tide is also one of the largest on the planet - a whopping 40ft!

A very clothes knit community

Men are still banned from knitting on the Island during the months of August and September, because their ancestors so loved the woolly craft that crops used to rot in the fields, unharvested. The seventeenth century government stepped in and the men could knit no more! Jersey was a favourite holiday destination of the Father of Communism Karl Marx. There is a prehistoric forest buried beneath the surfer‘s beach at St Ouen‘s Bay.

Surfing in Jersey Jersey has been a surf destination for eighty years and for a few years was one of the most important surf spots in Europe. At one stage, Jersey was considered to be the surf capital of Europe. In the 1960‘s - thousands of people packed St Ouen‘s Bay to watch the British Surfing Team riding boards made locally by one of Europe‘s only board manufacturers, Freedom Surfboards. The first Jersey Surf Club was created in 1923 by Nigel Oxenden and a group of friends, this was probably Europe‘s first Surf Club and surfing is still taught in the same place today at the thriving Jersey SurfSchool
