Welcome to Citywing We are delighted to welcome you on board your flight today, and thank you for choosing Citywing. Again I find myself in the Aviator at Gloucester writing my short piece for the magazine. I am here doing a radio show with Alex and John from Manx Radio. We have spent the last two days in Gloucester and Cheltenham viewing the various places of interest. I guess it should not come as a shock, but everywhere we record a show we always find a link to the Isle of Man. In this case we went to a gallery where they display well known Isle of Man painter Jeremy Paul, and a theatre designed by Frank Matcham in Cheltenham. As always, the trips to record the shows have given me a fascinating insight into one of our destinations that Citywing serve, and I certainly feel privileged. We are looking to see how we can get better exposure for the Isle of Man at our destinations so maybe in the future we will look to do more promotion there. We have been looking, with the Isle of Man Government, as to how best we can do this and should be putting some ideas into practice shortly. The last two months have gone very quickly, lots of things happening at work and of course the obligatory summer holidays. We have flown to Glasgow and taken a short trip around Scotland. We all had a time to remember and we all had our favourite places. Of course whilst we were there we had to take in a castle or two and they don’t get much better than Stirling or Edinburgh. In contrast we also had a short trip to England, driving down to Blackpool to visit my parents who live in the Fens.

Throughout we were blessed with great weather so we can consider ourselves very fortunate. It also seems that summer was very long this year which I think we will all agree, will make it one to remember. We have certainly been very happy with the increase in people using our services overall this year, so a big thank you to both customers new and old. We hope to welcome you aboard again in the not too distant future...

At Citywing we are committed to looking for ways to improve our service to you. We would be grateful if you would complete this questionnaire online after your flight. The forms are collated once a week and automatically distributed to our Quality manager. You can access the survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/Citywing or by scanning the QR code. All your answers are treated in the strictest confidence. Thanks for your help and we hope you enjoy your short flight.

DID YOU KNOW? Rabbits and parrots can see behind themselves without even moving their heads. Starfish don‘t have brains. A zebra is white with black stripes. Ants do not sleep. Shrimp‘s hearts are in their heads. Sound travels around 4 times faster in water than it does through air. Certain frogs can survive the experience of being frozen. The trickiest tongue twister in the English language is apparently “Sixth sick sheik’s sixth sheep’s sick“. Give it a try!

Shopping in Gloucester offers a mix of high street stores, independent shops, speciality markets, modern shopping centres and a retail outlet, all within 15 minutes from the Airport...

9

The main shopping area of the city fans out from The Cross. This is where the ancient streets of Northgate, Eastgate, Southgate and Westgate meet. You will find well known national brands interspersed with independent traders. The Westgate Quarter encompasses a growing number of small, independent shops and cafes on Westgate Street. Down the charming College Court, you can find attractive boutiques nestling in this charming thoroughfare including the House of the Tailor of Gloucester - the actual house that Beatrix Potter set her story. On College Street you will find more independent and family-run businesses set against the precinct of the breathtaking Gloucester Cathedral. There has been a quiet food revolution in Gloucester and the Westgate Quarter has an excellent delicatessen, several cafes and the odd historic pubs specialising in local produce. The Eastgate Shopping Centre with its magnificent portico (built in 1856), features more high street names plus there is also the indoor Eastgate Market with its plethora of stalls ranging from traditional Gloucester sausages at the butchers to a haberdashery. The market is open Monday to Saturday. Across the road is the Kings Walk Shopping Centre with stores featuring leading fashion, music and entertainment brands. There is a plaque on the floor of the centre which marks the site of one of the original Roman defensive towers.

Gloucester Quays An outlet centre where keen shoppers can save up to 70% off well known brand names. Gloucester Quays is home to a number of restaurants and cafes and hosts an annual Food Festival, Easter Home and Garden Party and the Victorian Christmas Market. Gloucester Quays is just a 10 minute walk from the city centre. Antiques Trail Gloucester is blessed with several high quality antiques stores which is not surprising, considering the city’s historical heritage. There’s Fab and Faded (Longsmith Street), The Dandelion (Cross Keys Lane), The Cottage (South gate Street) and the Upstairs Downstairs (Severn Road) antiques emporium located just behind Lock Warehouse on the historic Docks has a wealth of period lighting and furniture plus much, much more.

Let the Business Tourism team in Blackpool show you how they can make your event memorable for more than just the journey home! Have your annual board meeting 518ft into the air, and enjoy the views and scenery from the very top of The Blackpool Tower. Drinks and canapés take on a whole new aspect from this great height, a walk across the glass floor while looking down at the Comedy Carpet (the largest art installation in the North) will hope make even the sternest of board meetings memorable. The Blackpool Tower Ballroom – The most famous dance floor of them all is the most perfect of settings for conference dinners, award ceremonies or even a spot of team building. You don’t have to be Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers to enjoy this dance floor! But, if it’s tuition you want then that’s no problem either. How about an informal meeting at the world famous Madame Tussauds? The interactive attraction will open it’s doors just for you, even if your speaker doesn’t have a profile to hit the headlines you can meet with some of the most famous (and infamous) speakers of our time.

If it’s exhilaration you’re looking for how about a private ride on The Big One at Blackpool Pleasure Beach where for those brave enough ride speeds can reach more than 70mph and a height of 235ft! For the less daring, enjoy a glass of champagne by the dancing fountains and watch in awe as colleagues whizz by! If it’s animals you love Blackpool Zoo has more than enough to keep you entertained. Conferences are accommodated on site in the business suite and depending how interactive you want delegates to be, a tour can be arranged or for a real treat a hands on session with Terry the Tarantula! “I actually have the best job in the world. I present the Drive Time radio show on The Bay in North Lancashire and South Cumbria.“

I

arrived in work one Monday morning to be summoned straight into the boss’s office, wondering what on earth I had done wrong. As he spun round in his leather chair to face me he was smiling – a rare occurrence. He informed me of two amazing prizes he’d secured for listeners to my show; we were giving our lucky competition winners a weekend away all expenses paid including Citywing flights from Blackpool and accommodation plus entrance to the finest tourist attractions. One trip was for the Isle of Man, the other for Belfast. Thinking on my feet I explained how delighted I was to give my listeners the chance to win these amazing prizes, but unfortunately I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to talk about the Isle of Man or Belfast knowledgably because I’d never been to either. He stroked the grey whiskers on his chin and pondered for a moment and said, “I know; I’ll send you for a weekend away to the Isle of Man and Belfast to experience everything.” I snapped his hand off!

Saturday morning, upon arriving at Blackpool airport I was informed that the passenger lounge is open to all Citywing passengers. So after filling my face with as much free food as I could fit in, I was then well fed and watered for the day ahead. >

WWW.CITYWING.COM | OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2014

I’d never considered the possibility that you could go to the Isle of Man for a day trip. Surely it’s too far? Not at all. Forty minutes after leaving Blackpool I was stood outside the Manx airport hailing a taxi. The plan was to cram in as many of the attractions into my trip as possible so I could experience everything on offer.

First up a Segway Safari from the guys at The Isle Of Man Segway PT Tours. My instructor Simon took me on two laps of their woodland course with stunning views of the coastline. Once I got the hang of it I was speeding through the forest feeling the wind in my hair – or at least through the visor in my helmet. Such a rush. I could have stayed all day but my itinerary was fuller than Santa’s sack on Christmas Eve so it was time to move on. My next form of transport a complete change of pace... The Manx Electric Railway has been in operation on the island for well over a century and little has changed in that time. I caught a vintage tram from the stunning capital Douglas to Laxey. The tramlines adjoin the road and hug the coastline. The cliff top scenery is breathtaking; I think I certainly revealed to my fellow passengers that I was indeed a tourist as I was taking a photo every few

seconds. What I found most charming was the idea that these vintage trams are not just an attraction for visitors; they are a genuine form of public transport on the island. History is very important in the Isle of Man and it is delightful to see so much that is still in existence. After alighting the historic tram I ventured to a Victorian marvel – the Laxey wheel. A towering waterwheel which measures over 72 feet high. Once you have climbed

the steps to the top (which took me a while because heights terrify me!) you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views across the Glen Mooar Valley. The Isle of Man certainly has a different pace of life to mainland UK and I can imagine it must be a wonderful place to live. There are so many more areas I want to come back and explore but my time was up. Back to the airport onboard a Citywing flight bound for Belfast.

Upon arrival at the George Best airport the first thing that struck me was how friendly everyone was. I was made to feel very welcome.

y first stop the Titanic museum on the docks. The imposing building is in the shape of the bow of the Titanic and it is actual size. I have to say, hand on heart; this is the greatest museum I’ve ever visited. I am fascinated by the story of the Titanic like everyone else,

but this exhibition explores all aspects of the ship. From her construction in Belfast and conditions endured by the workers to a virtual tour of the complete ship and a fascinating big screen examination of the wreckage. The human tragedy aspect is a poignant part of the visit. With typical Irish humour I asked a local chap why Belfast is so obsessed with the Titanic when we all know what happened. He told me, “Well it was fine when it left us!” After a few lemonades in Belfast’s vibrant nightlife it was up early next morning to

be a real tourist and ride an open top bus tour around the city. This being my first visit to Belfast I hadn’t appreciated how beautiful the city is. The tour took us round all the prominent points from the city’s eventful history. After all the troubles of recent times Belfast is now able to shout about all it has to offer. It is a modern and at long last, peaceful city but the guided tour was certainly thought provoking. Belfast used to be synonymous with fighting and unrest. That image could not be further from the truth today. It is a vibrant city with thriving new areas such as the trendy Titanic quarter which even has its own film studios, home to one of my favourite TV shows, ‘Game of Thrones.’ Our tour guide recommended leaving the bus at one of the best markets in the world – St. George’s Market to sample the ‘real’ Belfast. This

a time when women and children were held within its walls through to the political segregation of republican and loyalist prisoners. The final inmates left in 1996 but the cells remain and an eerie, damp, underground walkway from the gaol to the courthouse over the road. The guided tour is captivating. Sadly, my whistle stop tour was over. In no time I was back in Blackpool airport with a ‘phone full of photographs and a rucksack bursting with souvenirs. I feel like I have only scratched the surface with both the Isle of Man and Belfast and I will most certainly be returning to both in the very near future.

place has been going for over a hundred years and is bustling with people buying all sorts of local produce. And there is live music too and plenty of food to sample. My visit was just on lunchtime which could not have been timed any better. Next stop for me is prison. No, I’ve not been a naughty boy. Crumlin Road Gaol is now a tourist attraction with a fascinating history. From

P

roducing a radio show in under 2 days to showcase a destination is a non-stop, whistle stop tour of the sights, sounds and best attractions that Newcastle has to offer. Myself, Manx Radio‘s Kate Holland and Citywing‘s David Buck checked into the luxurious Hotel Indigo and had a nice spot of lunch in their Marco Pierre White Restaurant before heading out to explore the city, and I have to say the steak baguette was delicious... and I‘ve tested a lot of steak baguettes over the years!

THE LAST TIME WE TOOK THE SHOW TO NEWCASTLE, THE WEATHER WAS DECIDEDLY DAMP AND I TACKLED A TOUR OF THE CITY ARMED WITH A BROLLIE! THIS TIME NEWSCASTLE AND GATESHEAD WELCOMED MY TEAM AND I WITH BRIGHT SUNNY BUT BREEZY WEATHER.

26

WWW.CITYWING.COM | OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2014

I was uneasy about attending the exhibition as to whether it was ethical to turn dead people into exhibits in some kind of freak show, but having visited I found the displays a fascinating insight into how the human body works. Is it a scientific series of exhibits or controversial works of art, you decide! The Bodyworlds exhibition isn‘t the only thing to see at the Life Centre

We met our tour guide Ed Young in the stunning Central Arcade in the City and he explained how the building and a large number of other landmark buildings had been built by Richard Grainger, who‘s name now adorns that part of the city. The tour was fascinating and took in the Grey Monument, the Royal Theatre and the Grainger Market which houses the UK‘s oldest Marks and Spencers stall, which still has exquisite, authentic signage outside. Sadly the market also features a public weigh scale, which is still used by people to find out their weight, as part of the tour I took to the scales.. suffice to say I wish I hadn‘t, a few more sticks of celery and a few less chocolate bars needed in the future! Our next stop was the one attraction that I can imagine courts the most interest and opinion; the Body Worlds exhibition at the Newcastle Life Centre. I‘ve been to many exhibitions before about human biology and seen a number of exhibits of the natural world in museums, but to experience

>

an exhibition featuring real human exhibits from people who‘ve donated their body for the process called “Plastination“

though, its a full day out for families of all ages, with attractions such as the Planetarium and a rather enjoyable 4D cinema ride... (though Kate and I still can‘t abide the way attractions nowadays use 4D as a description.. the forth dimension is time and we‘re pretty sure we didn‘t travel in time.... but it was still a brilliant 3D ride with extra special effects!) When it comes time to find somewhere to eat, Newcastle has to have one of the largest choices of restaurants on offer for Citywing destinations, and we chose a fantastic venue set under the railway arches with a roller-skating horse at the entrance called the Herb Garden! Not only was the food tremendous but the fact that they grow all the herbs used in the cooking in they‘re own trademarked, space age orbs which adorn the walls of the restaurant makes the eating experience even more intriguing... and the sink in the toilets is inspired!

T

he next day was one of discovery, with not only a visit to the Discovery Centre Museum, but also we discovered that the outside of the building offers very few hints as to the wealth of amazing artefacts and interactive displays that lie inside. Away from the Turbina steamship which dominates the 4 story entrance hall the building houses everything from the world‘s first electric light-bulb and Napoleon‘s purse to some of the finest art deco toilets I‘ve ever seen! (as you can tell it was an extensive tour we received from our guide Barry Donaldson!) to say you could spend a day in the museum and not see it all is an understatement, and to make it ever better it‘s free to enter for all. In order to make it back to the island in time, we took a slight detour via Blackpool on the way home to catch the next Citywing flight... thankfully for me of course there was just enough time to introduce Kate to the Pleasure Beach and the Big One Rollercoaster! For those of you who may have images of Newcastle being the “grim up north“ destination which doesn‘t have anything to offer you as a visitor, I can tell you that from the moment you arrive in the city you begin to experience just how vibrant, dynamic and varied the experience of visiting Newcastle and Gateshead can be,.. and having visited twice now I can tell you I haven‘t even managed to scratch the surface.

BUSINESS REVIEW Abacus Joins Expert Panel atAnnual Malta Fund Conference Leading funds services provider, Abacus, formed part of the expert line-up for a panel discussion during the 4th Annual Malta Fund Conference, held in St Julian’s Bay in Malta last week. Paul Kneen, Chief Executive Officer of Abacus Financial Service Group, joined the panel of speakers to discuss the types of services that can be provided by fund administrators, the duties of Depo-lites and the reporting obligations of administrators to regulators under AIFMD. Mr Kneen said “Abacus is pleased to have been part of this year’s event and welcomed the opportunity to take part in the panel discussions which looked at the impact of AIFMD a year on from its initial implementation. “The introduction of AIFMD in July 2013 brought with it a new set of rules and challenges for the funds industry. These challenges continue to change with the ongoing development and implementation of AIFMD and it remains in question as to whether it will be a positive or negative change for the funds sector.”

30

Abacus were also a sponsor of this year’s event which focused on ‘AIFMD - one year after’, looking at the implications on funds, managers and service providers following the introduction of one of the most controversial pieces of legislation introduced to the fund industry. This year’s event welcomed over 150 delegates ranging from fund promoters and fund managers to accountants and custodians, to legal representatives and fund administrators. Delegates were provided

Isle of Man Ship Registry Celebrates 30 Years of Success

T

he Isle of Man Ship Registry has just celebrated its 30th anniversary by highlighting its status as a leading maritime centre of excellence. It currently stands at number 14 in the world table of registers by tonnage, with Gross Registered Tonnage having more than doubled over the past 10 years and the number of vessels on the register increasing by more than a third over the same period. Alan Crowe MLC, the Department of Economic Development’s Political Member with responsibility for the Ship Registry said: ‘I am immensely proud of what the Ship Registry has achieved in its 30 years of operation. The maritime sector has become very important to the Isle of Man and now employs around 600 people. The Registry provides the hub for maritimerelated activities by a large number of firms in the Island, which delivers real economic benefit to our economy. ‘The Registry team puts a lot of effort into delivering a world class service for their global clients, which attracts owners of high quality ships and superyachts to register their vessels here. Dick Welsh, Director of the Isle of Man Ship Registry said: ‘The success of the register is due to its people. We have a very dedicated team of professionals who constantly go the extra mile to assist ship owners and help them to keep their vessels operating safely and efficiently in a global commercial environment. ‘This may involve registration in the middle of the night to suit shipyard delivery times in the Far East or access to our dedicated emergency response service which is available 24/7.

‘The relationship we build with our owners and operators is paramount to our continued success and it is this commitment to customer service which sets us apart. ‘I would like to echo Mr Crowe’s comments and thank all the staff for their hard work and dedication over the years.’ The Manx fleet now comprises all types of modern merchant ships and superyachts from owners based all over the world; more than 40% of the tonnage on the Isle of Man register is now managed or controlled from Asia. The Ship Registry has acted as the hub for the development of the Isle of Man as a maritime centre of excellence. The cluster is represented by the Isle of Man Shipping Association and the Isle of Man Superyacht Forum, which work very closely with the Registry and the Department to ensure the Island continues to be a preferred location for maritime business. This will be very evident during September’s Monaco Yacht Show where the Ship Registry, Department of Economic Development and the private sector will all participate on an Isle of Man stand.

‘Commercial income and visitors numbers, with their contribution to the local economy, are the only way that we can justify investing public funds on an event. These encouraging figures are an effective benchmark of the success of the rebranded event and, combined with increased media interest, give us a platform to build on to secure the event's long term future and deliver a tangible return on the investment.’ For the 2014 event, the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company reported an 11% increase in motorcycles travelling on the ferry for this year's festival compared with the

corresponding fortnight last year. Passenger numbers were also up on 2013, by 1,100 to 29,460 – the highest number for this fortnight in more than a decade. The Isle of Man Airport Authority has reported an increase of almost 12% this year in the number of inbound and outbound passengers through Ronaldsway Airport during the festival fortnight, following on from a similar increase of over 11% for the inaugural event in 2013. The Festival of Motorcycling event consists of the Classic TT presented by Bennetts, the IMGold Manx Grand Prix Races, the Classic and Two Day Trials and the Vintage Motorcycle Club Rally including their Festival of Jurby. The Classic TT commercial programme run by the Department of Economic Development's Motorsport team has seen new sponsors Dunlop, Vauxhall, and VP Fuels join the existing portfolio of commercial partners while the Manx Motor Cycle Club secured a title sponsor, IMGold, for the first time in the event's 93 year history as well as further sponsorship for the Senior Manx Grand Prix from local company Full Factory Winners Wear. The Glencrutchery Road Grandstand sold out all tickets on both Classic TT Race days while the Department's hospitality programme, which also ran on both race days, entertained over 600 guests, generated additional income streams. The official event programme and retail trade site inventory posted record sales while special events including the Classic TT Party, Classic TT Legends Dinner in association with RST, the Classic Racer Magazine Lap of Honour and the MGP Reunion Lap all provided additional income to offset the costs of staging the Festival and reduce the public funds required to stage the event.

HAMBLIN LAUNCHES CRYPTO CURRENCIES TRAINING Hamblin Employment Group, the Island’s largest recruitment, training and HR consultancy, has announced the launch of a twin series of training courses designed to help uninitiated and advanced professionals gain an insight into the contentious and fascinating world of cryptocurrencies. Due to take place at The Forum, Douglas on Tuesday 14th October, 2014, the series consists of a basic and advanced course each delivered by a team of crypto currency experts, and offers a certificate of completion which contributes to delegates’ CPD portfolios. Crypto Currencies 101, an introduction which takes place from 09:30 to 11:30, will furnish delegates with a definition of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies followed by a brief history of the concept and an overview of digital wallets, hot and cold storage, anonymity, security and costs. The course will also tackle investment versus use, the criminal use of digital currency and system participants to the global crypto currency network. Crypto Currencies 102, which takes place from 14:00 to 16:00, takes delegates to an advanced level, and deals with speculation, investment and derivative trading, theft, losses and hacking, taxation, prohibitions and restrictions, regulation and interference. The advanced section will also tackle such issues as money laundering, terrorist financing and the Dark Market. Finally, and of particular interest to local businesspersons, Crypto Currencies 102 will also introduce

the Isle of Man’s unique crypto currency proposition and a ‘how to get involved’ section for retailers and local businesses. Commenting on the announcement, Managing Director Emma Allard said: “For the most part, business’ reluctance and anxiety when engaging this remarkable technology can simply be put down to misunderstanding. This is, of course, understandable: crypto currencies can be complex, are plagued with news stories that can obscure their potential, and are likely to have an unprecedented impact on global business. It’s for this reason that Hamblin decided to create this training series. We want to furnish local business people with the knowledge and foundations to explore this opportunity with confidence, and on their own terms. It’s another step in the right direction for the Isle of Man’s crypto currency community, and for Island business as a whole.” To register, or request further details: emma@hamblin.co.im or call 01624-640420 Date: Tuesday 14th October 2014 Time: Basic Course | 09:30-11:30 Time: Advanced Course | 14:00-16:00 Venue: The Forum | Havelock Hill | Douglas Cost: £40.00 +VAT one course | £75 +VAT both courses CPD Certificates: 2 hours per course.
