Welcome to Citywing

W

e are delighted to welcome you on board your flight today and thank you for choosing Citywing.

I am writing this in the heat of summer, and on this occasion it is an unusually true statement. I still haven’t decided where to take the family this year, but I am slowly coming around to the idea of flying to Newcastle and then doing a tour around the beautiful coastline of Northumberland. Lindisfarne is one of those places I have always fancied visiting, so perhaps this is the time to do just that. I have also heard Berwick-upon-Tweed is worth visiting, which also happens to be the most Northern town in England. There is an unusual, and somewhat dubious story associated with the town which leads to the possibility that it either is or was technically at war with Russia. Luckily for me, my wife speaks some Russian, so if we visit and things are not as they seem, at least I will have all bases covered!

May I take this opportunity to thank you for supporting Citywing and hope you have found the service met your expectations. We aim for excellence throughout the whole process, from the website, check in, flight experience and afterwards whether it be just collecting baggage and departing the airport, to dealing with a member of the Citywing team. We continually strive to improve our service, so we would ask you to fill in the questionnaire in the seat pocket if you have time to give us feedback. We will always listen to your views, whether positive or negative; it is good to praise people for delivering excellent service, but it is also important to rectify any issues that may arise. If you liked the service you receive we would also be grateful if you’d tell us, or more importantly, please tell your friends. We hope to welcome you aboard in the not too distant future.

If you, like me, are leaving it a little late and are unsure of what to do and where to go, you will find every one of our destinations has something to offer. Have a look on the internet and I am sure you will find a huge range of interesting and exciting places to visit. All the airports we fly to have excellent transport links and facilities, so they make perfect gateways to the wider world beyond. As an example, my family and I have used Gloucestershire Airport to visit Cheddar Gorge, Wookie Hole, Warwick Castle, Drayton Manor Park, Stratford-upon-Avon and many other places. It is also convenient for trips to such locations as Bath, Oxford and Blenheim Palace, all places I would certainly vouch for. Also, if you are a friend of Manx National Heritage make sure you take the passes as they will get you into many heritage sites and if going to Wales, which is about an hour away from Gloucester, there is a reciprocal agreement with CADW and some marvellous castles to be seen.

3

Many of you have already liked our Facebook page and followed us on Twitter. If you haven’t yet, please do as that is where you’ll find our most up to date information and, from time-to-time, there may be offers or events of interest to you. With regards to charters or groups, we are in a position to offer services to and from most airports within the United Kingdom and Ireland, at very favourable rates compared to other companies offering similar services. We can usually tailor services to meet your needs, so it certainly can be something worth considering. For more details and prices email scc@ citywing.com.

Robinson’s Fresh Foods team wins Citywing charity plane pull

>

Citywing offer to help Southampton passengers Following the shock news that the Isle of Man will lose its direct Southampton service later this month, Citywing is stepping in to ensure visitors from the South of England can still get a direct flight to the Isle of Man. Any passengers who were booked to travel to the Island from Southampton are being offered the opportunity to re-book onto a Citywing flight from Gloucester (M5) airport for £1 less than they originally paid for a ticket from Southampton.

Robinson’s Fresh Foods claimed victory at the recent Citywing Plane Pull event, held at their hangar at Ronaldsway on Sunday 7th July. This year teams were raising money for Citywing’s 2013 charity of the year Crossroads Care. Entrants this year were Nobles Operating Department Practitioners, Western Viking Rugby Club, The Unfit Crabs, Robinson’s Fresh Foods, Southern Police, BS Ship Management, Barclays, Crossroads Care, HSBC, Claremont Hotel, and a children’s team. Robinson’s triumphed over the ten other local teams, watched by over 180 spectators, completing the 34 metre course in a record time of 16.52 seconds. After their exertions, competitors enjoyed bacon baps, tea and coffee, which were much appreciated and provided free of charge by Sleepwell Hotels. Citywing Managing Director David Buck said: ‘The event was great fun and congratulations must go to all the teams who took part, but especially Robinson’s who’ve taken home the cup for this year. Anyone interested in challenging them for 2014, or just looking to get involved with this fantastic fundraising event, please do get in touch – it’s a unique event and not many people can claim to have pulled an aircraft! We would also like to thank Sleepwell Hotels for contributing refreshments for all the competitors, Sarah and Colin from St John’s Ambulance, and Brian Kneale for his excellent photography of the event.’

Citywing Managing Director, David Buck, said: “Protecting access to the Isle of Man and maintaining visitor numbers is crucial to the economy in these difficult times, especially with numerous air routes being reduced or withdrawn. We want to ensure that no one has to cancel their plans to visit the Island.

7

Less than two hours’ drive from Southampton, Gloucester (M5) has great, fast, road access, 20 minute check-in and two weeks’ free parking. With our offer to re-book passengers onto one of our direct flights for £1 less than their original fare, we hope to save visitors time and money and get every trip to the Isle of Man off to a great start.“ To re-book tickets, passengers should email their booking confirmation to: reservations@citywing.com and Citywing will take it from there. 5 minute work break?

WhyAye_Raspberry Pi Each September the British Science Festival transforms a different UK city into a vibrant celebration of science, engineering and technology. The British Science Festival is going nutty about Newcastle this September. They will be gracing the Geordie shores with a science spectacular to remember from 7th – 12th September 2013 With the top minds in science heading east, make sure you don‘t miss out on all the science fun. An exciting programme is lined up for families, adults, professionals and school groups, packed with entertaining and engaging shows and events featuring artists, musicians, comedians and Newcastle University’s own science street buskers. Festival highlights will include: Family fun The six-day event will kick-off with an entire weekend dedicated to educating and entertaining families. From a science sleepover in a museum and science superheroes to freaky food of the future and walking on custard, there will be something to capture the imagination and interest of all. Events will take place across the city at venues including the Newcastle and Northumbria Universities, the Centre for Life, the Great North (Hancock) Museum, the City Library and the Discovery Museum. Newcastle University and Northumbria University will throw open the doors to give visitors a behind-thescenes look at some of the science they are working on. There will be lots to learn about – everything from bacteria and poisons to electronics and ageing, and even why our fingers go wrinkly in the bath! Debates and Lectures Debates and lectures will feature eminent scientists, including stars of the small screen, those at the forefront of today’s technology and scientists searching for solutions to tomorrow’s challenges.

16

The Award Lectures are a highlight of the programme and are awarded to rising stars of the world of science – Professor Brian Cox and Professor Richard Wiseman both gave Award Lectures at the start of their careers. This year two Newcastle University researchers have been selected for the prestigious honour of giving two of the five Award Lectures in recognition of their skills in presenting their work to a general audience. Dr Michael Sweet will deliver the Charles Darwin Award Lecture and Professor Hayley Fowler will present the Joseph Lister Award Lecture. Adults The SciScreen all-night film show is just one of the programme’s events that is strictly for the grown-ups. An entire night dedicated to films themed around science, including cult classics, science fiction, talks and experimentation with researchers from Newcastle University, Festival-goers are invited not just to be part of the audience, but also part of the experiment. The Electromagnetic Pulse Party is a club night out with a difference, combining DJs, performance, interactive installations and playful science. Professionals From its beginnings, in 1831, the British Science Festival has brought together scientists from different disciplines to explore the breakthroughs their colleagues have been making, and demonstrate how research can make a real impact on diverse areas of science, business, innovation and professional endeavour. This year will be no different with events ranging from Newcastle Science City’s debate on the role of science in the growth of a future city to Newcastle University’s focus on 21st Century transport. The full programme is now available online and booking lines are open. Visit www.britishscienceassociation.org/british-science-festival >

It can’t be easy measuring more than 30 separate criteria’s for water quality, litter management, dog control and environmental ethics while the rest of us are just lounging in deckchairs or building sandcastles. Inspecting Anglesey’s beaches must be a particularly tough gig. With 125 miles of coastline, we’ve got rather a lot of them. In all shapes and sizes. Little bays and rocky coves. Long sandy beaches. Even a beach with a forest attached at Newborough. And in 2011 no fewer than six of them were awarded the ultimate accolade of a Blue Flag. Step forward Benllech, Church Bay, Llanddona, Llanddwyn, Port Dafarch and Trearddur Bay. Not to mention the seven beaches that won a Seaside Award to prove that they’re clean, safe and well-managed. Or the 16 that scooped the Green Coast Award for unspoiled rural beaches. Thanks heavens our intrepid inspectors don’t have to measure the quality of the ice cream or the excellence of the rock pools. They’d be so busy they would never get home. The Times newspaper voted the sheltered sandy cove of Porth Dafarch one of ‘The 40 Best British Beaches’ or Coast magazine, who placed Lligwy beach in their ‘10 Best Picnic Spots by the Sea’.

They were very taken with the sausage-and-bacon baps from the café on the shallow shelving beach (perfect for paddling). They liked the homemade cakes and the ice cream from Plas Farm. And yes, they loved the rockpools, too. They didn’t even mention the ancient fish trap, the island where you can spot seals, dolphins and porpoises - or the beach hut selling everything from body boards to wind breaks. Perhaps they nodded off after all that food. Of course you or your offspring may have something a little more adventurous than picnicking in mind. Rest assured that during the summer many of our beaches have a team of dedicated wardens to help with safety and deal with any bumps and scrapes. At family-friendly Benllech or Traeth Bychan you may even catch a glimpse of our highly-trained jet ski drivers patrolling the waters. Along with a sighting of a beach inspector or two. They’ll be the ones putting ticks in all those boxes.

Business Review

Sure steps forward with a new name, new owners and new focus at senior level S ure has rebranded its enterprise division, refreshed the look of the Sure consumer brand and added members to the Group Executive Committee.

The company has taken its well respected and popular consumer brand, Sure, and extended it into its enterprise division, which is now known as Sure International, reflecting both the global reach of the company since its acquisition by the Batelco Group and the vast resource base which Isle of Man businesses can access following the acquisition. “Our customers told us that they trusted the Sure name and we wanted our new enterprise brand to combine that sense of local expertise with the global scale our new owners give us – Sure International does that” stated Eddie Saints, Sure’s CEO. Alongside the rebrand of the Enterprise division, Sure has refreshed its consumer brand, introducing a new-look logo that represents the richness of its fullservice telecoms offering and a modern, optimistic outlook for the future.

30

Underpinning these brand changes is a renewed focus on corporate sales and customer excellence as Sure’s Group Executive Committee is bolstered with the appointment of Jo Cox as Corporate Sales Director and Charlotte Dunsterville as Customer Experience Director, each of whom brings with them the benefit of many years telecoms experience. “Sure is entering a new, exciting phase as we renew our commitment to customer service excellence in the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands and take advantage of our new owners’ expertise and experience to deliver what our customers want, when they want it, at a price that’s right” continued Eddie Saints. Andy Bridson, CCO of Sure, added: “Our new enterprise brand indicates our commitment to bring the latest in telecoms technology to Isle of Man businesses, providing them with the platform they need to compete in the global marketplace. As before, customer service and technical excellence remain at the heart of what we offer. ”

26 authorities on e-Gaming collaborate on ‘You can!’ book. 26 authorities on e-Gaming – working across a broad crosssection of the Island’s e-Gaming industry – joined forces to write a book on how to form, license and run an e-Gaming company on the Isle of Man, they entitled it: ‘You Can!’ A world leader and home for the most innovative, rapidlygrowing sectors of business, the Isle of Man has become a fiercely competitive place of residence for some of the most influential online operators in the industry, such as PokerStars, Microgaming, Full Tilt, SBOBET, 188bet, PaddyPower, 12bet; a list that grows year-on-year. Co-editor, R Paul Davis, LL.D., a Canadian barrister and solicitor who established Counting House, a leading consultancy for e-Gaming worldwide, said: “This book went from idea to reality in less than four months, and was ready for release at the annual ICE Gaming Conference in London, where the first edition of 350 copies sold out in under two days. It is an extraordinary demonstration of the level of integration and co-operation in the Island’s business community, leaving competitor jurisdictions coughing in the dust.“ With a foreword written by the Minister for Economic Development, John Shimmin MHK, the book is the first comprehensive start-to-finish guide on starting and running a licensed e-Gaming enterprise. A contributing lawyer, Claire Milne, a Partner at Appleby (Isle of Man) LLC, said: “I decided to contribute because it was an excellent opportunity for a cross-section of the Manx

e-Gaming sector to share its experience with those interested in the Island as a jurisdiction. This jurisdiction is a business friendly jurisdiction on many levels and I think that this publication is an excellent example of that. Appleby has been committed to the e-Gaming industry for many years and was delighted to collaborate in this venture.” The compound annual growth rate of the e-Gaming industry was at 24% in 2012, growing to US$33.7 billion. New opportunities in e-Gaming are making headway as technology advancements proliferate, motivating innovative entrepreneurs to seek their fortunes by both refining discoveries and filling gaps in the market. David Hudson, Director of the SMP Group, said: “Choosing a jurisdiction can bring about a melting pot of reservation. Here, the Isle of Man is offered up as a strong and viable option with a well-established reputation in e-Gaming, a secure fiscal platform, remarkable support services and a great quality of life, underpinned by a business-friendly government.“ Mary Linehan, Chairman of B-Localiom.com, said: “The book combines a broad range of guidance, making a convincing case for operators and prospective newcomers to the e-Gaming industry to choose the Island as a home for their business.” You won’t find this book in retail stores. It is made available to prospective licensees and related professionals at e-Gaming shows all over the world. Copies may also be requested by e-mail: paul@countinghouseltd.com.

Online Services growth delivers further savings for Government The Department of Economic Development Information Systems Division has announced that the Isle of Man Government’s Online Services have reached another milestone, processing in excess of £500M of payments since their introduction in 2007. Payments made using Online Services during 2012/13 continued to show strong growth and accounted for over 40% of the Government’s revenue, an increase of 15% on the figure for 2011/2012. Additionally the number of transactions made through Online Services during 2012/13, including payments, rose to nearly 140,000, an increase of 37% on 2011/12. Minister for Economic Development John Shimmin MHK said: ‘It is vital that Government becomes as efficient and effective as possible as we seek to balance our budget. Better use of IT is playing a key

role in achieving improvements. The use of online payments is a good example of what savings are possible: 6 additional staff costing over £100,000 per year would have been required to process this volume of payments via traditional means. It also means the public are able to access public services at a time and manner that is more convenient, helping to make Government more effective. ‘The success of Online Services demonstrates the significant, positive impact that IT is playing in delivering the key objectives of the Government’s Agenda for Change and we will continue to look at ways in which technology can benefit Government, customers and the economy as a whole.’ For further information or to register for Government Online Services go to www.gov.im/onlineservices
