welcome to citywing

w

e are delighted to welcome you on board your flight today and thank you for choosing citywing.

we are highly delighted with the way that citywing is progressing and the forward bookings are very encouraging. where demand is we have added extra ights and are now planning our summer services for next year. TT 2013 has seen very strong sales and TT 2014 flights are available on line or through our Reservations Department, book early to get the best prices. we have been encouraged that we are now seeing some additional charter work, with some high profile people coming to the Isle of Man including from within the film industry. There is also an available aircraft in Cardiff which could be good for those wishing to watch the rugby, when in season of course! It seems that the competing routes situation on the Isle of Man is coming to a head, and the outcome may not be favourable for the people of the Isle of Man, and for those wishing to travel there. From all at Citywing, we hope that the Island links are maintained to a level which is good for both business and leisure traveller as these are vitally important for us all. we hope that the government puts in place a structure that supports and encourages investment in the Island links, and also legislation that allows the best interests of the island to be served. With regards to charters or groups, we are in a position to offer services to and from most airports within the United Kingdom and Ireland, at very favourable rates compared to other companies offering similar services. We can usually tailor services to meet your needs so it certainly can be something worth considering.

Respond for St John Ambulance St John Ambulance is the UK‘s leading first aid charity and believe that everyone who needs it should receive first aid from those around them and that no one should suffer for the lack of trained first aiders.

Citywing‘s Sarah McArdle

Our over 40,000 volunteers are committed to training, caring and saving lives, helping around 124,000 casualties annually. We‘re also one of the country‘s largest youth organisations with more than half of our members aged under 25.

emergencies, external bleeding, unconsciousness, strokes and falls.

’m sure most of you will have heard of St John Ambulance, and you’ve probably seen SJa volunteers in attendance at various sporting and charitable events, providing essential first aid cover?

After comprehensive training and testing, during which time a trainee CFR will have completed numerous scenarios, and only once all the relevant security checks etc. have been carried out will St John Ambulance issue a CFR with a kit which comprises an AED (automated external defibrillator), a backpack that holds various bandages, dressings, etc. and also a bottle of O2 – a CFR does not carry any drugs except a bottle of aspirin.

i

However, did you know that there is also a small, dedicated band of volunteers known as community First Responders (CFR’s) who have been trained by the isle of man Ambulance Service? if you have cause to call 999 and request an ambulance, there is a good probability that the first person who will arrive at your house / scene of mishap will be a CFR. CFR’s are despatched by the emergency Services Joint control Room personnel to any suitable (non RTC / fire) 999 call that is received within the area covered by the CFR who is logged on for voluntary duty. CFR’s are expected to attend incidents involving sudden lifethreatening conditions where early access to help can make the most difference to a patient. Possible conditions a CFR may attend include: chest pains, asthma & breathing difficulties, seizures, choking, diabetic

the St John ambulance community First Responder Unit relies totally upon charitable donations to keep their kits and equipment up to date, and we are extremely grateful to all the organisations who have made donations which enable us to continue to help you. if you would like further information about how you can help the St John ambulance Community First Responder Unit, either by fund raising or if you are interested in becoming a CFR, please contact: Gerry Jones, St John Ambulance County Community First Responder coordinator. email : gj88@manx.net or gj88@hotmail.com

Our volunteers provide first aid at high profile national as well as local events and provide support to the statutory services, especially in times of emergency. In addition to this we have a number of community support programmes which give vital assistance to some of the most vulnerable people in society such as the homeless and the elderly. we have a range of volunteering opportunities – from our Community First Responder scheme to our bathing service – all of which make an immediate and real difference in the community.

7

the origins of St John ambulance date back to the eleventh century and since then we have continued to provide the best medical care using the latest techniques. loucester has a vibrant, lively atmosphere that combines a rich historic past with all the excitement and attractions of a city just full of life, begging to be explored. Here you will find Roman foundations, Victorian Docklands and the magnificent norman cathedral rubbing shoulders with a bustling city centre with a range of shops, restaurants, wine bars, pubs, entertainment and unique visitor attractions. There is also a large park which hosts events throughout the year and four fascinating museums. Gloucester hosts several exciting events, such as the Tall Ships festival, Gloucester Blues Festival and the Gloucester Quays Food Festival, and has a sporting reputation with Kingsholm Rugby Ground. there is a large variety of shops - from High street favourites, supermarkets, a Designer Outlet at Gloucester Quays and a number of speciality shops in the Westgate Quarter. gloucester is well served by a train station on a main line and many bus services to other towns in the area.

gloucester is steeped in history. it is most famous for its Norman Cathedral, made famous by the Harry Potter films as the setting for Hogwarts School. the scenes featuring the intricately decorated corridors of Hogwarts were filmed in Gloucester Cathedral, It is also noted as the burial place of King edward ii. the historic Victorian docks are also popular with visitors, described by Charles Dickens himself as ‘extraordinary’, and granted port status by Queen Elizabeth I in 1580. Gloucester is the most inland port in Britain, and the docks are dominated by towering warehouses which stand proud along the water’s edge. Visitors can see skilled shipwrights and riggers repairing, restoring and building traditional ships and rigging all year round in Tommi Nielsen’s dry dock on the West Quay. Harry Potter

XII Early in 2011, the residents of gloucester were asked to vote for their favourite historic buildings and locations. With more than 500 listed buildings and numerous wellloved locations dotted around the city, the response was broad and varied, but after sifting through the mountains of correspondence and listening to many stories about gloucester and what it means to people, a number of muchloved heritage sites, buildings and features stood out as clear favourites. the gloucester Xii are:

1. Gloucester Cathedral 2. The New Inn 3. Gloucester Folk Museum 4. St Mary de Crypt 5. Gloucester Docks 6. The Old Bell 7. Beatrix Potter Museum 8. 26 Westgate Street 9. Blackfriars 10. Robert Raikes‘ Inn 11. Brunswick Square 12. St Oswald‘s Priory

The city has four museums – Gloucester Folk Museum, offering a look at domestic life in Gloucestershire through the ages; Gloucester City Museum which guides visitors through gloucester’s history back to the Roman times and beyond; The National Waterways Museum showing off Gloucestershire’s historical canal network, and the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum with a huge selection of military paraphernalia highlighting Gloucester’s connections with past wars. For more information visit:

www.thecityofgloucester.co.uk Did you know that Wall’s Ice Cream factory in Gloucester is the largest in Europe? It was built in 1959, and expanded hugely in 1981 when Unilever closed a plant in Acton and consolidated production in Gloucester. Wall’s was originally a meat company, which began making ices in 1922 to avoid laying off workers when demand for its sausages dropped in summer.

Why a Festival of the North East?

t

he north east is arguably the most creative and innovative region in england - since anglo Saxon times to the present day it has blazed a trail in arts, science, industry and engineering. when you consider how small the region is in terms of population, and then match this up to the amount of world class inventions, art works and innovation across so many aspects of life that have been created here – you realise that there is something special about this corner of england. So while the rest of the country nurses an Olympic hangover, the north east is indulging in a serious dose of hair of the dog as throughout June artists, theatres, galleries, museums, church halls and even lighthouses are combining to host a festival that will open minds, ears and eyes to the region’s unique character, creativity and innovation From the very big to the very small, for people of every age to experience and join in with, Festival of the north east will embrace arts and science, heritage & history and industry & technology, making it one of the largest and most eclectic festivals in the UK. It includes exciting new commissions from many of the region’s major cultural organisations, as well as work from individual artists and local communities. Highlights include: Foghorn Requiem, stand on the cliff-tops at the National Trust’s Souter Lighthouse in South tyneside and witness a large-scale and extraordinary musical performance as an armada of vessels take to the seas to perform a requiem alongside the Souter Lighthouse foghorn and other onshore musicians; celebrating the passing of the foghorn from the British coastal landscape.

Exhibitions, family-fun days, theatre, dance, music, talks, there’s a whole host of things you can see, do, hear and get involved with during Festival of the north east. Here are just some of the highlights from around 200 events! Walk On is an exhibition at the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art in Sunderland which brings together artworks that have been made through undertaking a walk into the city or countryside. The National Trust unveils three new artworks at Cragside under the title ‘Building Dreams’ and Dear Angel will showcase a new piece of literary artwork by Stevie Ronnie made with letters written by people from the north east. A series of five small performance commissions engaging with the idea of ‘place’ which will be premiered across the region for the festival. One of these, The Easterly, is a vivid explosion of stories and songs, told on a walk from Saltburn arts centre to the edge of the sea. Capturing the soul of this beguiling northern river, Tyne is a new play written by Michael Chaplin which forms parts of Live theatre’s 40th birthday celebrations.

Engineering and innovation is celebrated when Tees Barrage in Stockton plays host to a weekend of Riveting Stuff for people of all ages to get stuck into. If you want to travel back in time then climb aboard a special train at Tanfield Railway and be whizzed away on an animated family adventure by arcus Studios called the end of the Line. It’s Extreme, Mann. The Isle of Man is one of the world’s best extreme sports locations with an all-weather terrain, remote mountain region, lung bursting cycling ascents, natural running and walking routes and gnarly mountain biking trails. The Isle of Man is surrounded by the often brutal Irish Sea, which offers challenging open water swimming, sea kayaking and good board sports conditions. This folklore-filled Island, heavily influenced by both Celtic and Norse cultures, nestles at the very heart of the British Isles. In Manx mythology, the Island was ruled by Manannán mac Lir, a Celtic sea god, who would draw his misty cloak around the island to protect it from invaders. one theory about the origin of the country’s name (‘Mann’) is that it is named after the sea god manannan.

28

Famous worldwide for the annual TT Motorcycle Races, the Island is the perfect location for Cycling, Mountain Biking, Ultra, Trail, Fell and Road Running, Walking, Open Water Swimming, Kayaking, Triathlons and Adventure Races.

mountain Biking With its all-weather terrain, natural trails, forest roads, steep climbs, sheer descents and wet, muddy remote moorland paths, the Isle of Man has the perfect conditions for mountain biking. The Island also has a packed calendar of races - you can test yourself against the local riders in the Winter Series league or four challenging meetings... The season kicks off with the Legs of Mann cycling challenge, consisting of multiple ‘special stages’(competitive timed sections) interspersed with non-competitive (‘linking’) sections based on a low average speed. The Legs of Mann takes these disciplines and ‘mixes them up’ adding a massive dose of wilderness riding that is sure to challenge the fittest of riders. The Longest Day Longest Ride, organised by the Loaghtan Loaded club, is exactly what it sounds like! It is a 24-hour endurance mountain bike event held at Conrhenny Plantation and runs over the weekend of the Summer Solstice (longest day). the format is simple - ride for as long as you possibly can, clocking up the most number of laps you can of the 5km course. each lap is packed with a variety of riding, from forest roads to sweeping singletrack to boardwalksthrough the trees. The Manx 100 is a unique mountain bike event that involves 100 miles of riding from the island’s northern most point to its southern most point. in between is around 15,000 feet of climbing (and descending). There’s also the option of a shorter 100k course. the manx mountain Bike club’s annual end2end race sees over 1,600 competitors cross the Island from north to south in a testing battle against the landscape and elements. the 75k course features around 1500m of climbing - and descents - through a mixture of fast fire roads, sweeping moorland paths, country lanes and singletrack forest trails.

If you don’t fancy competing in a race but just want to get off the beaten track, pick up the new Outdoor and Leisure map from the isle of man welcome centre to explore your own way.

triathlon Surrounded on all sides by the Irish Sea, the Isle of Man is a great location for traditional triathlons with open water swimming, stunning coastal, forest and mountain scenery and remote, testing road cycling sections. Competitors will experience the only place in Britain where the seven kingdoms of England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Heaven and the Sea can all be seen at the same time. The 2013 Isle of Man Triathlon Race Calendar offers competitors the chance to compete in traditional, sprint and ultra distances. The season for adults gets underway with the traditional warm up - the Manx Sprint triathlon - in may. the headline of this year’s calendar is undoubtedly the TT Triathlon - an ultra distance tri centred on the world famous tt course. the island’s terrain will provide the ultimate test for Ultra-distance competitors with a 2.4 mile swim in the Irish Sea, followed by a 112 mile cycle across spectacular mountain scenery, through quiet villages and the Island’s capital, before finishing with a full marathon of lung-bursting fresh coastal air. as well as the Ultra distance run for solo competitors, there’s a team event covering the same distance and a short course version - a 1.2mile swim, 1 lap of the TT course (37.73 miles) bike section and a 6.2 mile run. 30

Just two weeks later, an off-road triathlon takes competitors deep into the Island’s countryside with an open water swim, mountain bike course and trail run. The season finishes with the Isle of Man National Championships in September and competitors have the chance to pit themselves against the best of the local Manx competitors. Featuring both Sprint and Standard distances, the ‘National’ is ideal for beginners and a great introduction to open water competition as the swim takes place in the shallow mooragh Park lake also much warmer than the Irish Sea! adventure Racing The Island’s impressive sandy beaches, picturesque glens, estuaries and exposed cliff tops provide the perfect backdrop to the annual adventure race calendar. Race the Sun, which has already taken place this year, is organised by the Children’s Centre and will be in its seventh year in 2014 and is a relay race like no other. The task is simple; starting at sunrise your team must complete a lap of the dramatic 100-mile Island coastal footpath before the sun sets. Split into 10 demanding sections, the course follows the Raad ny Foillan, a stunning coastal footpath with significant height gain. Teams can consist of any number of runners up to a maximum of 10. All money raised is donated directly to supporting vulnerable children and young people on the isle of man. to secure your place in Race the Sun 2014 or for more information about the event contact Mark Eastham at The Children’s Centre on 01624 631917 or email: markeastham@thechildrenscentre.org.im The Isle of Man Adventure Race is two single day events over a weekend. the Saturday elite race features sea kayaking, mountain biking, a hill run, an assault course and a ‘mystery challenge’. The Sunday amateur race includes mountain biking, open water swimming, sea kayaking, a hill run and the final rope climb. The Port Erin Bay Tri, held in the south of the Island, is a an ‘off-road’ triathlon held over three days and features running, mountain biking and an open water swim. The 7 mile ‘Pier to Pier’ coastal run starts things off on the Friday night and this is followed by a traditional ‘Manx Mile’ swim on the Saturday and a mountain bike trail race on the Sunday. The best cumulative time over the three days sees the winner take all! Racers will compete against the backdrop of the Port Erin Beach Festival - a full weekend of fun and games that features live music, Manx dancing, a kayak fishing competition, beach sports, seafood shack and more!

watersports The Island offers a great playground for many forms of water based sport including sea kayaking, open water swimming, sailing, diving, windsurfing, kite surfing or just plain sailing! Open Water Swimming - The Island’s main open water swimming event is the ‘Manx Mile’ race which takes place on Saturday 29th June as part of the Island’s annual ‘Queenie Festival’- a celebration of the Sea. This year also sees a competitive open water swim as part of the Summer Port Erin Bay Festival on Saturday 13th July. The sea swim is part of the off road tri but competitors can also just enter the swim. Board Sports - With beaches on all coasts, the Isle of Man is perfectly suited to windsurfing, kite-surfing and surfing. The majority of Manx windsurfing takes place in three bays in the south of the Island. Castletown, Derbyhaven and Gansey. The conditions range from flat water to large swell and even occasionally full on waves. Diving There are estimated to be over 1500 shipwrecks in manx territorial waters and the vast movement of water around the island brings rich feeding for an impressive array of marine creatures. Basking sharks are common from May through to July and the Island is also home to the rare Risso’s Dolphins. Minister encouraged by 2012 visitor figures Overall visitor expenditure increases, particularly leisure visitors

36

T

HE Minister for Economic Development John Shimmin MHK has expressed his satisfaction at the 2012 visitor figures which are contained within the 2012 Passenger Survey Annual Report

The Minister commented: ‘Overall visitor expenditure increased by just over 5% to £103M over the figures for 2011. Of this, the expenditure by Leisure Visitors increased by 14% to £47.7M. This is particularly impressive as the figures in 2011 were boosted by the highly successful Commonwealth Youth Games. ‘I believe this shows our strategy of working with the local private sector to target high-value niche markets is starting to deliver real results. My Department is committed to supporting further growth in tourism. The sector directly supports many jobs. In addition, it brings a level of leisure

and social activities – from sporting events to restaurants – that a domestic population of 85,000 people could never sustain. As a result, it makes our Island a more enjoyable place to live, which is vital as we seek to retain and attract the highly skilled workers and their families that we need to grow our economy. Therefore I am convinced tourism remains a key part of our economy.’

been expanded to include visits by classic car groups and small niche tours – particularly groups interested in aspects of the Island’s heritage such as railways and our natural environment such as diving or sea kayaking. Stargazing packages are also in development to exploit the Island’s seven Dark Sky Discovery Sites, which were announced by Manx National Heritage in October last year.

The Department published its ‘Visitor Economy Strategy 20122015’ on 1 March 2012. This set out the need to drive up quality and exploit new markets to develop the Island as a year-round, distinctive and unique visitor destination. The strategy is highly targeted towards high-value niche markets as well as having a greater focus on specific geographic regions, such as integrated marketing campaigns in the North West of England.

‘The Department continues to support and deliver new events to help boost visitor numbers such as the TT Triathlon and the Classic TT, the latter part of the new Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling. The Steam Packet has recently reported that bookings for the Classic TT are 22% higher than the same time last year, which indicates that overall visitor numbers for the event will be significantly higher than for last year’s Manx Grand Prix.’

The Minister highlighted how this strategy was being implemented and some of the results achieved to date, alluding to some of the key initiatives that have been developed over the past few months.

The Minister highlighted the greater emphasis placed on utilising the Internet to promote the Island.

He said: ‘We have strived to make the strategy a success through targeting specific markets. For example, broadening the portfolio of event-led tourism and developing activity-based holidays and group visits. ‘We are also delivering greater value for money in terms of our expenditure on marketing. We have been working our marketing budget very hard and allocate it to where we feel it would have most impact. ‘The Department’s portfolio of event-led tourism products has

He said: ‘Following improvements to the website last year it now attracts 70,000 visits per month, which is an increase of 300% on this time last year. A new, free Visit Isle of Man mobile app was also launched last October and to date there have been over 3000 downloads. ‘The popularity of the website and focus on online channels may indicate that people are turning away from traditional channels such as printed brochures, however to date we have actually seen an increase of 48% in the number of requests for the 2013 Visitor Guide over the 2012 version. This bodes well for future bookings.’ continued...

Business Review In terms of its public relations the Department is also seeing the results of its targeted approach pay off. The Minister noted: ‘Our targeted PR plan has resulted in a renewed interest in the Island from national, international media and specialist lifestyle titles. We have already hosted visits by the Daily Telegraph and BBC Olive magazine, with numerous further visits planned for the rest of the year. We already have articles pending for the Daily Mirror and The Guardian. Much of this interest is directed to those new markets we are keen to develop. The Minister continued: ‘These visitor numbers are encouraging and together with the many initiatives we are working on show how the Department remains committed to tourism and the visitor economy, which are vitally important to the Isle of Man, both in terms of jobs and the quality of life we enjoy here.’

Isle of Man Signs Statement of Cooperation with China Banking Regulatory Commission

T

he recent trade mission to China led by the Minister for Economic Development John Shimmin MHK exchanged a Statement of Cooperation on behalf of the Financial Supervision Commission with the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) to foster cooperation on banking matters. The Minister presented the signed document on behalf of the Financial Supervision Commission to the Chairman of CBRC Mr Shang Fulin in Beijing. This is a necessary step prior to Chinese banks establishing an operation on the Isle of Man. The Minister commented: ‘As an increasing number of Chinese companies are showing an interest in the Isle of Man, we have been working vigorously to make Chinese banks understand the benefits of setting up operations here. Through establishing branches in the Isle of Man, Chinese banks will be well positioned to support their clients which have business activities in the UK and Europe, which are vital trading partners of China.’ The Chief Executive of the Financial Supervision Commission John Aspden said: ‘The Financial Supervision Commission is very pleased to sign a Statement of Co-operation with the China Banking Regulatory Commission. This will undoubtedly facilitate a closer regulatory relationship with the CBRC, which we hope will encourage the establishment of Chinese banking operations on the Island.’

New Voice for Self Catering Sector - IOMSCOA

T

he Self Catering sector of the Tourism industry now has a new voice in the Isle of Man Self Catering Owners Association (IOMSCOA), formed on 17th April, during a meeting of owners held in Douglas. The first elected Chair of the Association is Sara Richards, who will head a Committee of five to represent the interest of Members. Explaining why the Association has been formed; Sara said ‘There have been a number of difficult challenges thrown up in the self catering industry this year which led a number of us to see the benefit of forming a group to improve the representation of what has been a very fragmented section of the wider tourist industry. We see this as a more effective means of working together with the Tourism Department of DED in the future, to help the process of consultation prior to the introduction of further changes in the industry. We also see the Association as having a role in facilitating the sharing of information and

generally improving communication between the Tourist Department and Members. We hope that new Members will join us to strengthen our voice.’ Angela Byrne, Head of Tourism commented “I am delighted that the Association has been launched. Its members are very much the ‘front line’ of the industry and so represent a very important element of our tourism sector. Strong, effective industry representation is vital to if we are to continue growing visitor spend and attracting more visitor numbers so I look forward to working with the new Association to deliver these aims.” Membership is now open to any registered self catering property owner and all enquires will be most welcome. Isle of Man committed to creation of investment opportunities with China

M

INISTER for Economic Development John Shimmin MHK led the recent Isle of Man trade mission to China and has reported back on the excellent opportunities that were developed to build up new commercial relations with this major growing economy. The Minister said: ‘During our five day visit to Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai we had a series of meetings with Chinese government officials, decision makers in major Chinese businesses and key business associations to understand and offer our support for their vision and plans for outward investment. Building awareness and acceptance in China of the Isle of Man as a successful, reputable international business centre is significantly reliant on building relations at government level and with key Chinese business stakeholders and demonstrating the economic benefits of doing business with the Isle of Man.

38

‘We also hosted two seminars which were attended by 150 people to introduce to them how the Isle of Man can support the “Going Global” vision of Chinese businesses. Many of them showed enormous interest in the variety of opportunities that the Isle of Man has to offer particularly in regard to our ability to provide a ‘onestop shop’ for Chinese exporters seeking to establish a trading hub for the UK or Europe.’ The main purpose of the visit was to attract Foreign Direct Investment into the Isle of Man and to support local firms looking to develop business with China. It forms part of an ongoing and long term commitment that the Department has to develop opportunities with the country. >

www.citywing.com | JUNE / JULY 2013

The Minister outlined some of the developments that had resulted from the trade mission. He said: ‘To succeed in key markets such as China requires time and commitment as part of a long term strategy. At the same time, I am pleased to report that we have already achieved a number of significant outcomes from this visit. We exchanged a statement of co-operation between the Financial Supervision Commission and the China Banking Regulatory Commission which will facilitate Chinese banks seeking to establish branches or subsidiaries in the Isle of Man. ‘An agreement of economic co-operation was signed with the Shanghai Small to Medium Enterprise Centre which will result in Chinese delegations visiting the Isle of Man for business study and reciprocal initiatives from the Isle of Man from as early as this summer. ‘Going forward it will be vital that we carry on the momentum gained so far to further build relations with China. Therefore we are committed to facilitating more trade delegations to China as well as hosting further visiting delegations to the Isle of Man.

I am pleased to be able to confirm that the Chinese Ambassador to the UK has offered his assistance for the Chief Minister to visit China in the next year to deepen our Government links. Also we will receive 4 Chinese delegations to our Island in the next 3 months. These are important further steps as part of our long-term strategy for engagement and growth.’ The trade mission consisted of a number of private sector organisations from a variety of business sectors who funded their own attendance. Peter Duke, Managing Director of Duke Marketing Ltd, was a member of the delegation. He said: ‘I found the trip well worthwhile and it exceeded my expectations in terms of new business potential. In a hectic five-day schedule, I managed to have high-level meetings with three major potential TV broadcast customers and three other promising partners, as well as fitting in a productive half-day visit to the renowned Canton Trade Fair, arguably the largest of its kind in the world.’
