The SAFF has made it a year in production and let me say it’s been a great project to run. I’ve loved every minute of it. On June 3rd The SAFF launched a birthday celebration at the Linwood Centre, where nearly 300 of you joined us for our family fun activities so thank you for all your support. My aim in the 1st year was to introduce you to your local community workers, and projects, and to give you the opportunity to get involved in community activities. I feel I have built trust in the community, and for the next year I want to use the SAFF magazine as a way of consulting with you. We did some research recently in the area and found that you don’t feel consulted when it comes to important decisions made in your community. Well I want to change this view. I want you to be able to have a voice and to be heard. Over the next few years we can expect changes to our communities with the reduction in available budgets. So have your say, and tell us what is important to you. If there are things you want to know about or you want to be involved in, get in touch. I will try to help this happen. I will also be putting surveys into the magazine so please get involved. By doing this you are already having your say. We will be re-launching a door-knocking scheme called “Keeping Saffron Involved.” We door knock every home on the estate and ask a series of questions so if we knock on your door please support us to make Saffron a better place to live.

What’s happening at Aylestone Recreation Ground?

Mark Laywood, Sports Project Manager’s update on the football pitch development on Aylestone Recreation Ground.
T
he Football Investment Strategy is transforming football facilities in Leicester, encouraging more people to become more physically active and developing state-of-the-art football facilities across eleven sites. £5 million has been funded by the Football Foundation and the rest contributed by Leicester City Council, NHS Leicester City and other partners. Eight of the eleven sites have been completed; two more are currently being constructed. Aylestone Recreation ground is set to open by the end of this September. The building will house 6 changing rooms as well as a large community lounge. The Football Foundation will not have exclusive use inside the building and has got a partner club attached to each of the sites.

This has been one of the specification from the FF, the reason for this is there’s a hefty business and development plan attached to each site and the County FA, FF and FA felt we needed a partner attached to each one. There have been concerns and issues raised throughout all the sites by local residents, these include a fear over the potential risk of vandalism to the site; and it becoming a congregation area for youths, which could lead to ASB. One thing I’ve learnt in local government over 25yrs, particularly around sports and park areas is that presence and ownership of the site can be the best form of security, so yes people may well find there is an increase in young people to the area but it will be for football purposes. When the building is complete, all of the temporary fencing will be taken down, the existing perimeter fence will remain there. The football pitches that were previously marked out will be marked out again however you may well see some different size pitches to accommodate for all age groups.

There will also be an artificial pitch where flood-lights will be used. All the facilities have gone through planning permission including the use of floodlights and there are terms attached to this to make sure there’s no overspill into residents’ gardens there will also be restrictions for when the lights can be used. The artificial pitch will need to be booked through the Aylestone Leisure Centre but the rest of the pitches will be ran as before by the sports on parks service through the City council. One aspect you may have noticed is that the grass isn’t growing as we expected, due to the lack of rain. The contract states to the contractors that the green space has to be maintained so in the next few weeks they’ll be back on site cultivating and reseeding the area at their cost.

Each site will have a management group this can compile of multi agencies in the area as well as local residents. I actively encourage community involvement and feel it will be a great opportunity to get involved. There’s a place called Saffron I love dearly, It nestles down in Leicester so they say, Where the people speak a very funny language, Saying, eh up me duck and Go Away. People don’t seem to have much money, If they have you had better show me where, Its not a land of milk and honey, But I’ve got friends and family living there. They say it’s a typical poor estate in the city, Of riches there seems to be a dearth, They don’t know the members of its community, To me it’s the best place on Earth This ditty has been penned by Terry a member of the Saffron Neighbourhood Management Board.

Have YOU ever said, “what this place needs is!” Or maybe, “No one listens to me!” If the answer is yes, then we want to know what you think of the area and how we can improve it. Saffron Neighbourhood Management Board will be working in partnership with Saffron Arts to carry out an estate wide survey called, “Keeping Saffron Involved” This is a door knocking scheme where we select certain streets every month and a team of volunteers carry out the survey in that area with residents. You may have taken part in this consultation before and this is where we get information on what local people feel about the Saffron Estate and how we can help to improve services for you. Changes will be coming to our community and we want to make sure you know about them; you are consulted on them; and that your views are heard and taken into consideration when decisions have to be made. We will take your views and feed them back to the Council. Saffron Neighbourhood Management Board is resident led and we are here to support you. Please help us do this by taking part in our survey when we come to your door.

Stephen told the SAFF ‘I initially trained as a Chef and also worked as a Postman, before training to become a Police Officer in 2002 in Surrey. In 2005 I was transferred to Leicester. I have worked as a response officer, a core crime officer, which is similar to CID, as well as a plain-clothed officer but since 2009 I have been with the neighbourhood policing team, being based at Clarendon Park and Knighton, this March I moved here to Freemen. What do think of the estate? It’s nice, and the people are nice. It’s often misunderstood. Like in many neighbourhoods people tend to have a pre judged opinion of it, unless you go there and meet the people then you actually see how different it is.

What changes can we expect to our local policing? We’re just waiting to see what the changes will be to our budget. We have already had a reduction in our vehicle fleet but if anything that should create a positive change to you locally, your neighbourhood policing will be out in the community more. Rather than just having a base at Welford Road we now have a base at the Linwood workshops and at the sports stadium, we are looking for other locations in the community. This enables us to work more productively but also if residents want to speak to us and are reluctant to go to the police station we can arrange appointments at these sites with a PCSO, Police Officer or even a Sergeant. What have you been doing in the area lately? Since March we have been working to reduce anti social behaviour on Marriott Rd, which has been reasonably successful The amount of children in the area has reduced; calls reporting ASB have reduced and working in partnership with housing is having an effect. We have also been working hard to fight ASB on Helmsley Rd where incidents have led to reports in the local media. There is an ongoing investigation but we’re making progress and we’ll keep you informed. Do the Police use social media to contact residents? We are available on Facebook and members of the public can reach us there. It helps people who are reluctant to speak to the police face to face. You can use the messaging facility to contact us with any policing issues or concerns you may have.

u p d at e 10 City Council cash offices including the one on Saffron Lane have now been phased out throughout the city in a bid to save the council £200,000 a year. The council have been told they need to have made savings of around £82 Million by 2015. Local residents have been encouraged to set up Direct Debits and Standing Orders to pay their rent. You can also apply for a rent payment card and this can be used at the Post Office and any other paypoint sites.

COMMunitY neWs Friendly Friday Success! Engage Multimedia set up the Friendly Fridays community and business networking events, a FREE open to all event based at Unit 9, Linwood Workshops, Linwood Lane, between 10am-12pm every second Friday of the month. The events are proving to be a great success and having this kind of networking opportunity within the community can have a positive effect on you as a resident, your business and you local organisation. So come along and get engaged! It is fun and informal, we start with a cuppa and networking chat. We also have guest speakers or workshops for half an hour. Over the months many organisations have come along to introduce themselves and showcase what they do. We have had talks on social media; becoming a social enterprise; where you can receive business advice if you want to set up your own business. The April Friendly Friday was “The Big
Whittier Road Bridge Works What are we doing to the bridge and why? Whittier Road Bridge, which was originally built in 1925, requires major maintenance works to extend its life. This includes carrying out concrete deck repairs and installing a new waterproofing system. When will works start and how long will they last? Works were originally due to start last year once the Knighton Lane East Bridge works were complete, but unfortunately had to be postponed due to funding issues. However, we now have funding to carry out the bridge works and we aimed that once work has started its expected to take 8 weeks.

May hosted a Ladies Day theme where we invited inspirational speakers one Dorothy Francis gave an inspirational talk about women in business telling stories about her own success as Leicester Business Woman of the Year. In June was ‘2 Pitch or not to Pitch’ where community workers and local enterprise startups gave a two minute pitch about their projects and products and services. All the events have been fantastic, with interesting talks and lots of useful information. Will the road be closed? Whittier Road will be closed to all vehicles at the site of the bridge. Traffic will be diverted. Pedestrian access will be unaffected, although minor diversions due to footway closures may be necessary at times. Will work take place continually? At times, it may appear that little or no work is taking place, but a lot of the works will be happening out of sight below the bridge. For instance new waterproofing can only be applied to a dry concrete deck, so therefore any concrete repairs will have to be left to set, and it may appear that no work is taking place. Sometimes we also have to wait if the gas or electric companies have to carry out substantial work before the bridge works can continue.

Life at the Linwood “M
ost children on the Saff went from their junior schools to the Linwood Lane schools. One former pupil recalled that: “Although the school was for boys and girls, we were never allowed to mix. The girls had the top half of the school and the boys had the bottom. To separate them in the playground a white line was painted. The threat of what would happen if we crossed was sufficient enough to keep us apart.” Discipline at the school was very strict. Ched Brown a former teacher remembers that: “You were caned if you came to the school in dirty shoes or if you were late. I was beaten twice for dirty shoes because I used to play football on the way to school. Linwood Lane was particularly well known for its football teams coach Joe Muscott kept detailed accounts of all major matches and after he retired he compiled all of these into bound volumes, these are kept today at Friar Lane Old Boys FC, so they can still be viewed. You were expected to behave in a certain way when representing the school. Winning was important
and in the eyes of the community it was very important. Chad recalls; one match 500 residents turned up to watch. Falling numbers partly due to a decline in birth rate, bought the closure of the Linwood School in 1983. People on the estate mounted a campaign to turn the building into a community centre and set up an action committee. Such a centre was badly needed in the view of the Leicester Mercury on 8 September 1982 when it ran a feature entitled, “The People of the Forgotten Estate”. The school closed in February 1986, half was converted into an adult education centre, with classes in literacy, crafts, woodwork and unemployment education. The other half was converted into small units for people setting up businesses.

Saffron, schools and people are invited to bring along anything to show what has happened over the years. Open to all.

April 2010 - March 2011 update At the Freemen Ward Meeting on 22nd June, your local City Warden Scott Clarke gave an update about his activity over the past year. There have been local hotspots where littering was becoming an issue such as Saffron Lane, Neston Gardens and Elston Fields. Patrols in the area have resulted in 31, fixed penalty notices being served. There have also been problems on Sheridan Street, Lothair Road, Knighton Fields East and Wordsworth Road in regards to litter bins being left out in the street at all times. Scott staged an approach to educate local residents about not leaving their bins outside and this has resulted in a reduction of offences. Scott has visited 46 businesses in the area to discuss their duty of care when it comes to waste. A project with Enviro Crimes was undertaken to deter businesses from using Freemans Common recycling site to dispose of their waste this resulted in 5 fixed penalty notices being issued. 17

Make a Difference! The Environmental Crime Team and City Wardens are working together to organise clean up days for local community groups / schools. We have enough equipment to facilitate approx 50 people - both children and adults are catered for. Any rubbish your group collects on the day, will be removed free of charge by our Cleansing Services Team. Enforcement Officers will be on hand to assist you with your event and answer any waste related queries. We have had great success with previous events around the City and feel that a few hours work can make all the difference to an area.

SOUTHFIELDS DRIVE
I like the area where I live. The people are friendly and they always help you if you need them too. Local shops are nearby and there are plenty of community places to visit if you want to get out and about and take part in activities. Adults can go to several different meeting places in the area. THE LINWOOD CENTRE has a variety of groups you can join especially if you are interested in artistic classes. The Art and Needlework I saw in these groups recently completely took me aback it was so good. The groups laughed and shared stories and everybody was friendly. There are also opportunities for adults who wish to learn a variety of topics including accredited courses. It is a great place to eat too with voluntarily run coffee bar and luncheon club. SOUTHFIELDS DRIVE has a local gym for residents to use and the Community Centre has many activities to participate in especially for the over 50’s, they host bingo days, support for the elderly and they arrange day trips.

You can even start your own allotment there. PORK PIE LIBRARY is a great place to go too at no cost. GOLDHILL is also great for adults as well as children you can go and volunteer on the projects and this can help you to gain work experience and new skills. I have been involved in Goldhill Adventure Playground for many years.

As an ex pupil at Mary Linwood Girls School, I got to know a lot of local people and some said I was fair minded, friendly, a good listener who is not afraid to talk to anyone and suggested I have a go at being a local Councillor. So I took my chance and went for it. I became a Ward Councillor for Eyres Monsell just over a year ago and was recently re-elected. I have had many happy days helping people in the area I live.

Nicola has lived on the Saff all her life and grew up on Uplands Road. She has always had a love of gardening and wanted to pursue this as a career. It’s not been easy, but with passion and drive she has overcome many obstacles to making her dream come true.
Where did your interest for gardening come from? My family love gardening my mother and grandmother always had allotments, back yard plots and tended their own gardens. I used to love helping them. I have 2 allotments at the minute on the site off Copinger Rd. My kids love growing their own vegetables with me. We took some of their friends down to help with weeding. They were picking out onions, potatoes, radishes and peas. They found it really interested. We took them home and used them for dinner. Because they’d picked them they wanted to eat them. They weren’t too keen on the radishes but they said they’d never had such sweet peas, you can really tell the difference with fresh vegetable. You can grow vegetables anywhere, its well worth trying. All you need is a large pot and some soil as long as you remember to water them they’ll be fine. When did you decide to pursue gardening as a career? I discussed the idea to set up my own business but some people didn’t think my idea would work, especially as I didn’t drive and would need a custom made trailer to attach to my bike. I thought about it a lot and eventually thought, “Why wouldn’t it work?” This spurred me on to follow my dream. Being on income support I spoke to my advisor about my ideas, they were really helpful and suggested I write a business plan. I spent months writing it but the job centre only needed 1 page typical ha. They agreed to grant me £700 to buy some tools to start me off. I’ve had lots of support from the Resource Centre and Lifestyle Promotions who helped me with training. I grew in confidence and went on to work in college teaching gardening skills, this enabled me to save up for more tools. On April 1st last year I set up my own light garden maintenance business called “Petals Garden Care.” It’s taken time but it’s all starting to come together I know it’s not always going to be easy running a business but I enjoy what I do. It’s rewarding to see peoples faces when their gardens are clean and manageable it’s a nice feeling.
I work by the hour £13 for customers over the age of 55, the normal price is £15 per hour. I can get a fair amount done in an hour. A first visit on an overgrown garden will usually take longer but it’s up to the customer what they want me to do. It can often be intimidating calling in services you don’t know and costs aren’t always made clear. I’m local to the area and very trust worthy so if you want me to come and have a chat about what I can do for you in your garden then please get in touch.
