October! Isn’t that a name that sends chills down the spines of many a biker who resides in this part of the World? We will, hopefully, luck out with some good riding weather (That will, hopefully, last until May of 2020 and then get back to summer!) as we do try to extend our riding season as long as we possibly can! But you have to be cautious when leaving on a nice morning for a ride up through the countryside to take in the spectacular Autumn colours as Mother Nature can be a sneaky Bitch and lure you out on your bike then spring some nasty shit on you with little or no warning! I know I have ridden out on a nice sunny morning only to return home in sleet, snow, freezing rain and whatever other nasty crap she decided to challenge me with on many occasions over the years! This year has been a challenge for me and mine due to “Godzilla”, my wife of 50 plus years suffering a serious stroke in May, from which she has yet to recover! True to her nickname, she is a fighter, and is determined to get back home! She is currently in a Hospital in the 400 Hwy. and Finch Ave. area, that is part of the Southlake Hospital System, while we wait for a placement in a long-term care facility. They specialize in rehabilitation and they are all working diligently to get her well and back to me ASAP. The staff there are truly amazing, and treat her with never ending patience, compassion and respect and I feel comfortable knowing that she is in good and capable hands! Our little Wonderdog, Rosebud who has become my almost constant companion and accompanies me on many of my visits has become quite a hit with staff and patients alike! Speaking of Rosebud, she had her 1st ride on a motorcycle last weekend and she didn’t do too bad! Bud and I went to see my friends at Pet Paradice in Newmarket and we searched through their large inventory of assorted harnesses and stuff and found something that worked somewhat! I took it home and further rigged it up with a strap off one of my banjos so that she was slung across my chest and resting on my lap when I’m sitting on the bike. I enlisted the help of my friend Pamela, who is now staying with us at Casa Critter and we all piled on the Trike and off we went and like I said earlier, it did not go too bad at all! She didn’t panic and seemed to settle in nicely after the initial shock of movement and wind accompanied by the sound of the motor, this is all completely new to her but she is quick to adapt to new stuff and she should take this in stride! This could be good, as she always likes to be around me wherever I go! She travels well in the truck and has gotten really used to hotels, road food, hanging out in bars, does well at bike shows and events and pees and does her other business pretty much on demand, so this is the next logical progression! I’ve called in my buddy Dave who did the upholstery on the box on the back of the trike and who also designed and built the box/backrest that was to The Rider’s Mag - Page 6

carry my hat and camera to convert it to a “Bud Box” that should make her ride more comfortable! As I have stated before, all this stuff with Zilla has really affected my work here at the Mag and I’m relying on Brenda and the rest of the crew to take up the slack! I haven’t been getting out to anywhere near the events that I used to! I wanted to get to Biketoberfest, a couple of Bacchus events, the fall Swap Meet at Classy Chassis and another at Strictly V Twin up in Pefferlaw and many other parties and such. Sorry to any of you who were expecting to see me, but after putting up with me for over 50 years and getting me through all of life’s challenges, trials and tribulations, a heart attack, a stroke and numerous surgeries, injuries and illnesses, I won’t let my wife down when she needs me most! I hope you all understand but if you don’t ______! Anyhow we are still getting things set up with the Mag so that everything progresses and grows properly and we can move seamlessly through whatever the future holds in store! We had some issues once again with our e mails and our domain name but thanks to valiant efforts by “The Beast”, they are resolved and we can get back on track with our website and other Social media issues! We were also going through some inconsistencies with deadlines and delivery dates and we are working to correct any shortcomings and such ASAP. I know Dez and Dingo Dave have got a place down Niagara way to hold an end of Riding Season Party and they will supply those details in her space and there should be an ad as well but “The Beast” is shouldering much of the responsibilities of running the Mag until I can get my shit together! I mostly just get to hear about things once they are fleshed out! I am working on a couple of venues myself for many different events that we hope to put together and we are looking at getting fresh new designs for t shirts and other merchandise in time for the Show Season that is only a few short Months away!

Vincenzo Fernando Basile “Vinny 1%er” – Outlaws MC, Canada February 21, 1951, Sulmona, L’Aquila Italy - August 30, 2019 Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Death seems to never take a holiday! A long-time friend from the AOA lost his long battle with cancer and while the news of his death wasn’t unexpected, it still hits hard when the realization that he is truly gone begins to sink in! So, on this somewhat gloomy morning, I gathered up my gear loaded it in the trike and headed down to the Bernardo Funeral Home, in the Dufferin St./ Lawrence Ave. area. The sun would make brief appearances only to disappear behind dense clouds again throughout the day. Vinny was a well respected, solid, stand-up guy and a proud and loyal Member of The Outlaws Motorcycle Club for more than 25 years!

I was there early but it came as no surprise to see the

The parking lot filled with bikes and people when I rolled in on the trike! I found a spot to park and was instantly greeted and engaged in a flow of hugs and handshakes with a group of people, some of whom, I hadn’t seen in years! I got my helmet off and exchanged it for my fedora and then withdrew my usually trusty Nikon from its case! I lined up a couple of old friends in the viewfinder pushed the button and nothing!! No click, click, click! WTF?? I checked all the stuff I usually check, like; Did I turn it on? Is the battery charged? I then did the advanced trouble shooting and diagnostics check that they taught me in Roving Reporter training! I took the battery out and put it back in! I shook the living Hell out of it, smacked it hard with my right hand and then the left! I turned it off and on numerous times, (I resisted the urge to drop kick it in front of a passing bus or setting it ablaze!) before pitching it back inside the box of my Trike cursing it all the while uttering a string of profanities that would make a sailor blush! The back up camera was safe and sound back at the shop! I then reached to my shirt pocket and extracted my Blackberry and proceeded, taking pictures as best I could! Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do and use what you can to get you through! Now, my worry was that I would have enough battery power to get me through the day! No charger on the Trike! Anyway, I made my rounds, taking pictures and reminiscing with old friends making my way into the funeral home and up the stairs to the chapel where Vinny lay amidst the floral arrangements, photo displays and trappings of his time here on Earth! I paid my respects and picked out a spot in the gallery from where to take in the service! After a very moving service we moved back downstairs and outside to wait for Pall-bearers to bring Vinny out to be loaded on the “Forever Free Motorcycle Hearse” and lead the long procession to the Beechwood Cemetery. This would be a long procession and I imagined it could really difficult to move the number of motorcycles and other vehicles and keep the pack together and moving at a reasonable pace! This is something that so many Clubs, when left alone, have done very well for The Rider’s Mag - Page 7

years! It is something that requires planning, practice, riding skills and precision but sometimes we get resistance and interference from Law Enforcement and it results in what can best be described as a Cluster Fuck! What we experienced here today was an excellent example of respect, and community involvement on the part of Police, in the interest of public safety and traffic control that should be paramount in Police interaction with all of the Citizens and the Community as a whole! It is always good to see biases and prejudicial attitudes set aside and it gives hope that society can evolve into something better! We had the full co-operation of the Toronto Police Dept. who blocked every intersection on the route to the Cemetery and we moved pretty well the whole way with very few slow downs! No harassment, no safety checks, no stupid tickets for fabricated violations! I believe in giving credit where credit is due! It was very classy on the part of the police and a job well done! A tip of my hat to all involved! The service continued at the Cemetery and they lay Vinny in the ground. His Club Brothers paid final tribute, and respect to this wonderful, warm, loving, Human being, husband, father, grandfather, Brother, friend and accomplished Martial Artist, paying final respects to a man who left us far too soon by burying him! Each Member took turns with the shovels until they had moved all of the huge mound of dirt into the grave in short order! I knew Vinny for a long time and respected him completely and I had thoughts of joining in, grabbing a shovel and helping. But I firmly believe that that is a job reserved for his Club Brothers, as only an Outlaw should bury an Outlaw and that belief extends to all Clubs no matter what colour they be! There was a gathering at a local restaurant afterwards but I had other things to do and left them to share Vinny 1%er stories and remember the life and times of a true biker! To his Widow Kim, his children, Grandchildren, Family, friends and Club Brothers I offer my heartfelt condolences! He will be missed by all who had the honour and the pleasure to have known him! Wedding Bells for Stan Marshall - BOTB MC and Cherylanne Hayes

I love Stan and Cherylanne and their friendship means a lot to me and I was really looking forward to their Wedding! I had plenty of notice about the wedding! There were lots of reminders along the way too, on Facebook and mailed invitations and so on. It wasn’t a secret and not as if the subject didn’t come up whenever I visited the Clubhouse! My schedule keeps me hopping and my ever-deteriorating memory makes for a bad combination at the best of times! My general response to most invitations is to say I’ll do my best to get there but it is very seldom that I make actual make promises! This was the case with Stan and Cherylanne but I really intended to be there! That was until I found Godzilla sprawled on the floor in the hallway of our home which put a whole shitshow in motion and changed my life as I knew The Rider’s Mag - Page 8

it! I do write things down and formal invitations are piled up on my desk in specific piles in a filing system that only I understand, but my mind now gets more muddled with each passing hour! It used to be; with each passing year! It changed to Month! Then it with each passing week, then day and now it is all just an adventure! But why just have a life, when you can have an adventure? I try to mark stuff on the calendars but things do tend to slip by without me even realizing it! This was the case last Month when I missed Pastor Dave Neals’ Wedding! I didn’t forget I was just unaware where I was in the Month or even what Month it was! I get calls from credit people saying that I missed a payment and realize that a whole Month has slipped by unnoticed or un acknowledged with a payment! It is the World as it is right now! Truth is, I always relied heavily on Godzilla to remind me about stuff! She would keep track of all this stuff with notations on the calendar and or neatly organized piles of documents and stuff on her end of the kitchen table! This included; Doctor appointments, surgeries, court appearances, anniversaries, birthdays, special occasions and other important stuff. I knew not to mess with her stuff! This was one of those buttons that I could press that would change the sweet and pretty little 5’ 2” Diane into 20 ft. tall, ugly, fire breathing, green and lumpy, Godzilla! (I have always known what buttons I should and shouldn’t press, and know full well the consequences attached to each button, but my sense of adventure or just being plain stupid makes me push them all every once in a while, just to see if they still work!) She remains in the Hospital since her stroke and now my social and business schedule is now fully under the control of my failing memory and planning skills that would rival The Toronto Maple Laugh’s Annual run for the Stanley Cup or the Bay of Pigs invasion! I know my Blackberry has apps that can track all that stuff if I took the time to figure out how to work it! It is like having the best chainsaw in the World and not knowing how to start it! Instructions you ask? What are you some kind of a sissy? Who reads instructions or asks for directions? Any how, I got back from visiting Godzilla at the Hospital and was rummaging through the mountain of papers that I prefer to describe as productive clutter rather than just a pile of crap or a mess as others have a tendency to refer to it! I came across the invitation to Stan and Cherylanne’s nuptials. “Hmmm! I thought to myself. “Yeah this is coming up soon! I’ll move it to the top of the very important pile!” I glanced at my calendar to see how far away it was and much to my dismay, it was today! I tore into the house quickly placing a call to Cherylanne as I had not RSVP’d and wanted to make sure that there was still room for me! My housemate, Pam inquired as to why I was in a panic and I quickly explained about the Wedding and I thought at first that she was mocking my state of panic until she blurted “Is that today? I have an invitation too” Misery does love company, and she does live here! She fits! “Yeah! I’m trying to call her but she’s not answering her phone! What else could she be doing on her Wedding day that she is too busy to answer her phone?” I muttered. “Ask if there is room for me too!” She pleaded! I think Pam subscribes to the same method of planning and control of important information as I! The phone rang and I was relieved to hear Cherylanne’s lovely voice on the other end of the line! She was quite understanding and said that there would indeed be room for myself, Pamela and Rosebud “The Wonderdog”. It was an informal dress code, so myself and Rosebud were ready to go but Pam decided that she needed to get to a higher degree of informal and would take a while longer to get ready! I have always enjoyed the North Country and it was a great day for a drive to the Huntsville area! However, the weather did look a little sketchy for an outdoor Wedding as grey was the dominant colour of the sky and it was a touch on the cool side! We were coming into Fall and the leaves on many of the trees were starting to change colour. We made our way to the magnificent property that was to be the venue for this great day in the lives of Stan and Cherylanne and it could accommodate all the many friends and Family who had come out to share in the occasion!

There was camping spaces available and many had brought their tents an other gear with them! It was a fantastic ceremony! Well thought out and the amount of planning that had gone into it was obvious! Everything, from the outfits worn by the wedding party, the music, the layout of the gallery, the alter and all the other little things that go into these occasions was top notch! However, I am really curious as to who they had to talk to, pay off, cajole, threaten or what favours did they have to cash in or promise to have the dense clouds part at just the right moment and have the sun break through and shine directly on the Bride and her entourage as they exited the house and follow them down the aisle! It was a brief and shining moment to say the least and very effective! Good work to the ones who pulled that off! Do you guys have nude pictures of Mother Nature or compromising video with her and some woodland creatures or farm animals or something? Please call me here at The Mag! Anyhow, the wedding went well and two wonderful individuals became man and wife and now we could get down to partying and celebrating the occasion! There was an excellent buffet and plates of absolutely wonderful fare satisfied appetites of the many guests! Rosebud made out like a bandit as everybody wanted to feed her and she was fine with that! All in all, it was a fantastic day but we still had a good sized drive ahead of us and lots left to do before I could call it a day and we headed South back to Newmarket! Congratulations may you enjoy a long, happy, healthy and prosperous life together! L&R

As l was heading out on Sept 7th...WAIT…Sept.!!! Where the hell did August go? Sorry.. lost my train of thought for a second. Oh yes, Sat Sept. 7th, the day of the RIDERS 3rd Annual Poker Run. The day dawned dark and dismal, but that did not dampen the spirits of determined bikers who showed up at BLACKSTOCK MOTOR SPORTS to raise funds for PROJECT TRAUMA SUPPORT of Perth, Ontario. As I was just about to focus my phone... uh... l mean camera, you know, the camera on my phone. (Critter has yet to trust me with his high-tech camera because it does not have a PHD feature on it, a push here dummy button.) l heard someone call out my name. The voice sounded familiar but, in the crowd, l could not see who was yelling at me, then one sometimes wonders IF they want to be found? As the voice got closer l was caught up in a big bear hug. It was my cousin George and his friend Anthony. As they say you can run from family but not truly hide. The next familiar face I saw was Brian who rode in on his 1984 Heritage Classic that still runs great. Our own Miss Breakin Dawn was there with support for a cause close to her heart. Registrations was well under way at 8:30. Due to the early hour, a fabulous Pancake and Sausage breakfast was cooked up and served by the Firefighters from Scugog and Clarington Stations. As l hate cooking l should ask if they are up for personal hire, l would eat breakfast every morning IF someone else cooked it! Stacey and Dale asked “where is the old fart?” I wondered just who they meant, until they fondly asked about Dianne who is more lovingly know a Critter’s “Zilla”. Her name

came up more times than l could count, everyone is rooting for her recovery. I failed to find out who rode in from the greatest distance but the shortest award would go to Chris and Julie Stringer who showed up on their red devil. Then as kick stands up, was announced and everyone was leaving, my heart hiccupped for a moment when l spotted a Daughter and Daddy duo. It shot me right back to being a little girl and The Rider’s Mag - Page 12

riding with my Daddy. I managed to get a shot of Corey and Kaylee as they were roaring away. There was approximately $5500.00 dollars raised, thank you RIDERS for holding this event and thanks to all who came out despite the weather. See you next year.

Who doesn’t know the phrase “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas?” Well the same thing applies to your brain. What the Hell!!!! Yep…I know that is what you are thinking, how can this writer jump from one thing to another so quickly? I wanted to make sure you would finish reading this, as it is very important and not well known. We have a nerve in the back of head called the VAGUS NERVE, sounds close enough to Vegas, so that you will remember it. This innocent sounding nerve can cause of multitude of symptoms affecting your health. Strange things that you would never connect to one thing. This is one of 12 nerves that run from your brain stem but it is the only one leading to the abdomen. It also connects to the lungs and the heart and many more organs. Things that can irritate this nerve are stress, any kind of GI distress (stomach, small intestines and large intestinal issues, a Hiatal hernia, poor posture, alcohol, spicy foods and anxiety. A big one to watch out for is a concussion. We as riders, wear a helmet to protect our head from heavy trauma but even a seemingly small bump on the head from a fall, an injury at work or even just a cupboard door left open can affect your brain, thus the VAGUS NERVE. This nerve runs from the centre of the back of your head (upper most part of your spine) to both sides of your head near your ears, down both sides of your throat into too many organs and places for me to mention here. Please google THE VAGUS NERVE to learn more. If you are like me you have probably already figured out that while doctors are great and needed. Some are just too busy to really hear what you are saying. Also bear in mind that while theirs’ is an esteemed profession, be aware of some who think they are God. Today it is hard to even find a doctor, let alone one you can trust and one who is humble enough to say “lets get a second or even third opinion until we solve this”. If you are experiencing any of the following and your Doctor has yet to explain it. Study this nerve and educate yourself. Inflammation, diarrhea, vomiting, difficultly speaking or loss of voice, wheezy voice, loss of gag reflex, pain in the ear, trouble drinking liquids, unusual heart rate, trouble breathing, decreased stomach acid, weird skin or taste sensations, loss of appetite, feeling full after just starting a meal, stomach pain, unexplained weight loss, blood sugar problems, fainting, obesity even though your hardly eat anything, mood disorders and depression. If you think this list is just too long and doesn’t make any sense to you, another thing to google is IMAGES OF THE VAGUS NERVE. When you see it for yourself you then will understand how this one irritated nerve can cause any or all of the above. We should have been taught about this in school. Too many times l hear my friends and other riders with many of the above complaints, saying how frustrated they are with their doctors and the hospitals sending them for test after test and not finding anything wrong. I am not saying this is YOUR issue, only you would know that. Remember though, that KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. If you can take back some of your own power by listening to your body as it speaks to you, it may lead you to the right Doctors or Health Professionals who can help. Wishing you health and wellness.

Now, which one are you going to turn your back on? ************ The Italian cow The only cow in a very small town in Northern Italy stopped giving milk. The town elders heard that they could buy a cow in Sicily quite cheaply and so they brought a cow over from Sicily. The cow was absolutely wonderful. It produced lots of milk every day and everyone was happy. They bought a bull to mate with the cow to get more cows, so they'd never have to worry about their milk supply again. They put the bull in the pasture with the cow but whenever the bull tried to mount the cow, the cow would move away. No matter what approach the bull tried, the cow would move away from the bull and he was never able to do the deed. The people were very upset and decided to go to the local veterinarian, who was very wise, to tell him what was happening and to ask his advice. They told the veterinarian whenever the bull tries to mount our cow, she moves away. If he approaches from the back, she moves forward. When he approaches her from the front, she backs off. If he attempts it from the one side, she walks away to the other side. The veterinarian rubbed his chin thoughtfully and pondered this before asking, "Did you by chance buy this cow in Sicily?" The people were dumbfounded, since no one had ever mentioned that they had brought the cow over from Sicily. "You are truly a wise veterinarian," they said. "How did you know that we got the cow from Sicily?" The Vet replied with a distant look in his eyes, "My wife is from Sicily." ********************************** A lady walked into a pharmacy and spoke to the pharmacist. You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice; yet the plural of house is houses, not hice. If the plural of man is always called men, why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen? If I spoke of my foot and show you my feet, and if I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet? If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth, why shouldn't the plural of booth be called beeth? Then one may be that, and three would be those, yet hat in the plural would never be hose, and the plural of cat is cats, not cose. We speak of a brother and also of brethren, but though we say mother, we never say methren. by Dawn McLimoyle It has become very apparent to me that I live in my own little World and it just does not exist when I walk outside the door of my home. They say everything always runs smoothly until first contact and I see this as a very true statement. Once I leave my home, the unpredictability starts, and I just have to roll with it. There comes a time in your life when your start to realize that not everybody is what they say they are. I probably should have learned this in my younger years however due to self-imposed isolation after repeated traumatic experiences I am just learning this now (and I will be 47 in October). I did get out to a couple of events this month but really, I needed time to relax, regenerate and re-integrate. I had a bit of a slow-down after the hustle and bustle of the move, getting a new car, and choosing myself in a relationship where I knew he could never care for me the way I cared for him. On August 25th I made it to The Rider’s Mag big Show and Shine in Loretto, ON and I took Dutchess Von Dee and lasted most of the day. I met some amazing new people and although I don’t know the guys name, he was so nice to me I am including the picture we took there. It turned out to be an amazing day and the crew from The Rider’s Mag took great care of us, ensuring we ate and that Dutchess had tons of water. Since it was back to school time and HarleyG’s was giving out backpacks for the third year in a row to less fortunate children I went out and bought 10 backpacks and filled them with everything needed to start the school year and donated them in the name of The Rider’s Mag. The nurse in me even included hand sanitizer and Kleenex. I was feeling generous and donated more backpacks and school supplies but didn’t keep count. I just remember being that kid and that Mom that didn’t have everything required for myself or my children, so I enjoy being of Service to my Community and my friend. That weekend I managed to make it to the Rider’s For PTSD Ride and got to see my friend Skully and Marie who was the organizer of the event. I met Dr. Manuela Joannou who runs Project Trauma Support which is where the funds were going from the ride. Project Trauma Support is a program that helps Veterans with moral injuries. I left there and made my way to Lindsay to the Show & Shine and got to see Morley from Recycled Gear again. I bought 2 motorcycle alarm clocks from him and while waiting to see my Son and Granddaughter I forgot they had batteries and freaked myself out thinking “Who the F$%# put the bomb in my car?” Then I laughed when I realized it was the clocks. Both of my sons are working for the same company now and they are gone all week so if I do not see them on the weekend, I do not get to see them at all. My youngest son sent me a huge surprise telling me he got me a present which was for both of us as he got a huge anchor and red rose tattooed on his hand to represent me and my Navy history so he can’t hate me as much as I convinced myself he does. I am good at letting that negativity demon in and need to fight it constantly. I had the best compliment from someone this month The Rider’s Mag - Page 18

and I wanted to mention it because sometimes I don’t think people see me or even notice me. I am getting to know the people on my distribution route, so I had been stopping at Asylum Ink and speaking with Ian the tattoo artist there. He told me that he really thought I had blossomed since I started delivering the magazines and that he had noticed the change from shy and not wanting to talk to opening up more and being myself. I was really happy to hear that, and I appreciated the words of kindness because there was nothing attached to them other that Ian wanting me to know I was doing well. We shared some good laughs and I hope I made a new friend because that isn’t easy for me to do. Some people misperceive my kindness and end up offending me because they think I want something I never wanted in the first place and send suggestive messages that are way out in left field to what I actually feel. This I am learning to ignore and not get so upset about. I can only control my reactions to situations, no one else’s and I am learning to respond, not react. When I react, things get harder and my whole life has been lived the hard way so I figured if I take a few breaths, remember who I am and don’t react right away than I can see the situation from a different light. When I do this, I am more able to see the problem is not me. When people cannot control me anymore and I do not react like they want me to, then they try to distort other people’s perceptions of me, and I used to care. I used to care about what everyone said or thought but now I am trying to live by a set of letters someone very important made me aware of. FTW-BIFU. These 7 letters have changed my life. I need to just let the hate roll off and live the best life I can and be the best possible version of myself. That is punishment enough to all the people that want to see me fail and have for years. I got to start archery again this month after my Coach taking a summer holiday and although I have been practicing, it was nice to be able to get guidance again. Coach Alex from North Woods Archery is completely impressed with my abilities and extremely encouraging in all aspects of my life. I had to head to Ottawa to give testimony in a hearing at Federal Court where I got to meet many people I had only talked to online and we came together for a cause for the greater good. In order to get to the 10th & 11th Floor we had to go through strict security and I actually got asked to take my hand Rosary out of my purse because they thought it was a weapon. I thought, WOW, that Rosary is from the Vatican (a nun gave it to me for buying her groceries) and it was the one thing they thought was a weapon (never mind, Dutchess’s leather leash I could have hung someone or myself with, lol). Anyway, the hearing got very overwhelming and I decided to hit up the Mefloquine Rally that was taking place on Parliament Hill. This was to raise awareness about the controversial anti-malarial drug that many Solider and Sailors were forced to take and is now having devastating impacts on lives. I saw my friend John Dowe who is the cofounder of the International Mefloquine Veterans Alliance and my friend Philip Brooks who has had his benefits cut and is suffering horribly due to the negligence of Veterans Affairs. It is good to know that we all support each other and if there is a crisis other Veterans will rally together. Dutchess Von Dee was with a friend for the morning and the march and rally and when I found her, she had a place of honour near the Veterans Eagle Staff and this made me tear up with happiness. I am looking forward to Autumn, to not being so busy, to finally training my dog, to my birthday and to the new life and adventures I am going to have. I am finally stepping into the me, I should have become a long time ago before life got in the way. I wish everyone a good month and look forward to next month where I will bombard you with the new ink I am getting from Inked Impressions Tattoo and Body Piercing Studio in Port Perry and all the other interesting things I will be doing that I don’t even know half of yet. Stay Golden, Stay True and always keep smiling, it makes people wonder. The Rider’s Mag - Page 19

So Suzie forgot about her Joe and planned to marry Will. But after telling pappy this, he said "There's trouble still; you can't marry Will, my gal, and please don't tell yo mother, cause Will and Joe and several mo I know is yo half-brother." Showing his friend around his home, Fred started to point out all of the collectibles he and his wife had acquired over their long years of marriage. "The day before I die, I'd like to sell every piece we've got just to see how much it's all worth." "But you couldn't possibly know the day before you were going to die, so how could you sell it." "Simple... If I sell it, my wife would kill me!" ************ In a high school economics class the teacher asked, "Can anyone give me an example of a business failure due to careless management?" One who had recently retired was describing his life, "I get up late in the morning, have a light breakfast and then I lie down on my veranda for a few hours and relax. In the afternoon I go inside for lunch, have a great salad, fruits and cold fish, then I spend the rest of the afternoon boating or playing golf or tennis... When it starts to get dark I have a great dinner with a nice bottle of wine. I smoke a Cuban cigar. Then I go lie on my veranda again." The other gentleman acknowledges that this is a life to be envied. Later he reported the conversation to his wife. She asked, "What's his wife's name?" Her husband said, "I'm not sure, but I think it's Veranda." ************ Into the local pub comes Paddy Murphy, looking like he'd just been run over by a train. His arm is in a sling, his nose is broken, his face is cut and bruised and he's walking with a limp. "What happened to you?" asks Sean, the bartender. "Jamie O'Conner and me had a fight," says Paddy. "That little shit, O'Conner?" says Sean, "He couldn't do that to you, he must have had something in his hand." "That he did," says Paddy, "a shovel is what he had, and a terrible lickin' he gave me with it." "Well," says Sean, "you should have defended yourself. Didn't you have something in your hand?" "That I did," said Paddy, "Mrs. O'Conner's left breast, and a thing of beauty it was, but useless in a fight." ************ Get this." said one drinker to his friends at the bar, "Last night while I was here with you guys, a burglar broke into my house." "Did he get anything?" his friends asked. "Yeah, a broken jaw, two teeth knocked out, and a pair of broken nuts. The wife thought it was me coming home drunk." *************************************** A son and his dad walk into a bar and the dad says to the son, "What do you want, Fathead?" The son mumbles something, clearly embarrassed, so the father again says, "Come on, Fathead, what do you want?" A lady close by says, "Why do you keep calling your poor son fathead?" He replies, "Well lady, there are 3 things a man has to have in his life to be a success. Number one, you got to have a big truck. See my truck over There? Biggest truck you can buy. Second. You got to have a big house. You know that house at the end of the street? That's mine, the biggest house in the county. And thirdly ... you have to have a good woman with a tight pussy. And I had one 'til this fathead came along." ************ THE TAX AUDITOR At the end of the tax year, CRA Sent a tax inspector to audit the books of a local hospital. While the taxman was checking the books, he turned to the executive of the hospital and said: “I notice you buy a lot of The Rider’s Mag - Page 21

bandages. I imagine there's a lot of wastage there. What do you do with the end of the roll when there's too little left to be of any use?" "Good question," noted the executive. "We save them up and send them back to the bandage company and every once in a while, they send us a free roll." "Oh," replied the taxman, somewhat disappointed that his unusual question had a practical answer. However, he was now well mounted on his favourite hobby horse and ready to be critical. “What about all these plaster purchases? What do you do with what's left over after setting a cast on a patient?" "Ah, yes," replied the executive, who actually hadn't a clue, but rising to the challenge. "We save that too, and send it back to the manufacturer and every so often they send us a free bag of plaster." "My, my, an answer for everything!" responded the auditor, who also fancied himself a bit of a wit. "What do you do with all the remains from the circumcision surgeries?" "Here, too, we do not waste," answered the executive. What we do is save all the little foreskins and send them to the tax office and once a year they send us a complete prick." ************ A girl pulled into a crowded parking lot and rolled down the car windows to make sure her Labrador Retriever in the back seat had fresh air while she went into the store. The dog was stretched out on the back seat, and she wanted to impress upon her that she must remain there. The three sons, recognizing the difficulty of dividing 17 mules into these fractions, began to argue. Their uncle heard about the argument, hitched up his mule and drove out to settle the matter. He added his mule to the 17, making 18. The oldest therefore got one-half, or nine, the second oldest got one-third, or six, and the youngest son got one-ninth, or two. Adding up 9, 6 and 2 equals 17. The uncle, having settled the argument, hitched up his mule and drove home. ************ The personnel office received an email requesting a listing of the department staff broken down by age and sex. The doctor gives her a pill, but warns her it is still experimental and tells her to slip it into his mashed potatoes at dinner. So, that night at dinner, she does. About a week later she's back at the doctor's. She says, "Doc, the pill worked great! I put it in the potatoes like you suggested. It wasn't five minutes and he jumps up, rakes all the food and dishes on the floor, grabs me, rips all my clothes off and ravishes me right there on the table." The doctor says, "I'm sorry, I didn't realize the pill was that strong. The foundation will be glad to pay for any damages." "That's okay," she says, "We hardly ever go to that restaurant anyway." ************ Labor Day, in case you don't know history, was established all the way back in 1894 as a way to give Americans an extra day to dread going back to work after the weekend. ************ Scientists have discovered a species of fish that surrounds itself with uglier fish in order to look more attractive. However, scientists could not identify which sorority it belongs to. ************ Nintendo recently announced that its character Mario is no longer a plumber. Apparently, he was fired after coming to work on mushrooms. ************ One morning, I was roaming the aisles of my local supermarket, looking for items on my shopping list and wondering why the graham crackers aren't ever put in the cracker section. In my futile search, I kept running into a guy I'd never seen before. He was wandering up and down the aisles, with an equally lost look on his face. Somewhere between the pasta and sauces, he looked up at me and said, "I can't find a darned thing in this store!" I knew how he felt, so I asked, "What is it you're looking for?" He said, "My wife." ************ I had just stopped by a burger drive-through for lunch to eat on the way back to work and I ordered the #1 combo (burger, fry, coke) for $4.29. The drive-through cashier said "that'll be $4.83, please drive forward." "$4.83? For a $4.29 meal? That's 54 cents tax! That can't be right," my mind raced. October This astrology has been written in “Quin-trains” meaning there are five lines to the divination. The fifth line will reveal the answer to the other 4 lines. There are 13 twisted spokes in creation of my wheel I use instead of the common 12. Since this wheel is created this way, this allows the reader to approach the wheel in 2 ways. As each sign represents a spoke in the wheel, you can read either what your own spoke has to say or read what all the spokes have to say to share a visual to the whole picture. See how all the spokes complete your wheel. The 13th spoke is what I call the “Dath Spoke” It is the spoke that binds all other spokes together, so you can see exactly what wheel(s) you’re using for your ride. Consider it having extra rubber for extra mileage. Well, it looks like summer is coming to an end, and that can only mean one thing to me, the start of planning my winter getaways south. I love riding in the southern states, and I will be headed down in 2 days to scope out a few spots that will be my winter getaway this year. The motorcycle events, biker friendly establishment’s and business’s make it a pleasure to hibernate down in Florida in the chilly frozen months. The thought of having my bike with me and exploring in the sun are all I need to think about while the leaves start to fall around me. It amazes me the difference riding in the south compared to Ontario, anytime of the year. Everyone is friendly and welcoming, and I make new friend’s wherever I go. The events and rallies are well planned, and not overly policed and a lot of fun. People are not judgemental or cliche, just a bunch of riders enjoying the day and mingling with others. Probably because everyone in Florida is a transplant from somewhere or other, or also just trying to escape the winter weather. I would also like to hit Arizona and a few other places I have pegged on the map this winter. I am already planning a few big events for next summer too. I love getting out the map and planning a route that I never usually end up following anyway. It’s easy to get sidetracked, there is always a hidden gem of some sort that needs more exploring. I also hate using GPS but will use it as a last resort. Give me a good old fashioned map and a pen (because I write directions down on the back of my hands for easy viewing while riding) I don’t mind stopping and asking random people for directions either. Most have great short cuts or scenic routes, and once in a while some interesting stories. There is just a great feeling road tripping on a motorcycle that can’t be explained, and if I had to explain it then you wouldn’t understand. Exploring unknown territory, seeing interesting things and sights, like the northern lights, snow capped mountains while wearing a t shirt, moose and bears the size of pick up trucks, or swimming with the dolphin in the wild. It's always an adventure. The little mom and pop roadside diners are a favourite stop too, full of colourful people with great stories. Everyday is an adventure and makes the getting there alt more fun and interesting than the destination itself. The September long weekend I headed up to Spry Lake on the bike for some much needed rest and relaxation. I had a blast just riding around aimlessly. I got lost a few times, well not really lost, just ended up somewhere I had never been before. Thanks also Sharon (sticker chick) for the quick tour of the Wiarton area. Thanks also to my daughter for giving up her trailer, and little piece of heaven for the weekend. (Mom cleaned for you) Mission for the Mission 2019, Windsor Hosted by the Sober Sons MC Previously ran by the late George Winney and Patrick (Frenchy) Aligard. The event was a huge success and raised $25,818.75 which was donated to the Windsor downtown mission. The Rider’s Mag - Page 32

The amount raised will provide 8302 meals. This years 11th Annual ride broke previous records with more than 300 in attendance. The personal connection that the Sober Sons MC have to the cause makes it all the more meaningful thus they took over hosting. The mission offers resources for those struggling with addiction or tough times, including a free 90 day recovery strategy and a job re-entry training program that assists people in finding work. I am sure George Winney was smiling down on everyone involved.

I passed on going to Port Dover this year, and I am sure I don’t need to fill you in on my reason’s. I did not go last year either. Genuine White Boys Poker Run was also a great turn out this year, leaving from the Checkered Flag in Mount Hope and ending up at the Clubhouse. The weather cooperated and there was about 130 bikes in total I am guessing. I managed to get a great live feed of all the bikes leaving. A great time was had by all. Jimmy at the Checkered Flag is always a great host for these events, so stop in and grab a burger if you are ever in the area. They are really good.

The Widows Sons also had a ride out of Rocky’s HD in London, The 4th Annual Poker Run was in support of Children with Pitt Hopkins Syndrome, which is a rare genetic disorder. Find out more info about it at pitthopkins.org. The Women’s World Relay is underway, and yesterday was day 200, the start of the first leg across Canada. Starting at Trev Deeley’s HD in Vancouver and will be headed across Canada. The BC girls accompanied the baton to Revelstoke to meet the Alberta girls. I know a few of the girls in other countries have had to endure quite a bit of weather and other issues, New Zealand girls, about 90 in total, rode through rain, fog, ice and snow, but all were in good spirits. I will try to have a better indepth coverage in the next issue once the baton has travelled across Canada. Feel free to follow the baton, and some fun videos and post of the girls on Facebook at WRWR Women Riders World Relay page. The Germany crew looked like a lot of fun. I try to cover as much as I can, I know some of you get pissed when I am not present at your events, but there is only one of me, and I do actually have a life, work, grandkids, stress, a lawn to mow, etc. that I have to fit into my schedule also. I do try to keep my weekends free so I can cover as much as possible. The events that are paid advertisers in the mag come first, and we try to cover them if we can. Dingo Dave and I try our best between the 2 of us to get out to as much as possible. It’s a big area, and a long list of events. I also am not one to take any flack for not being somewhere, on my own time and my own dime…… we do the best we can, there is a lot of events on the same day at times. So I will repeat….. We do the best we can. I hope everyone enjoys these cooler days. I know the bikes will. Get out as much as you can before the dreaded snow shows up. Me and my streetglide will be getting as much as we can in. Hope to see you on my travels. Respect each other and keep the shiny side up.

Winterizing Your Bike A quick checklist (For us chicks that like to do things ourselves) Yep, It’s getting close to that time again. Darkness is arriving earlier, the Duvet and flannel sheets are back on the bed, the furnace is kicking in at night time, pumpkin spice season will soon be over (which won’t be a bad thing actually) And we all know what that means..... Whenever you store your motorcycle for an extended period, a little TLC up front will save you some time and money in the spring. Give your bike a thorough cleaning before putting it away. Letting bug guts or water spots sit on your paint that long can corrode the finish. Wash and dry completely, then add a coat of wax, which adds a barrier against moisture and rust. Battery: Check fluid level (if you have a lead acid battery with the screw on type caps on top) Maintenance free batteries still require winter upkeep. Take out and store in a warm place, or put a battery tender on it for the winter. Fuel System: Fill your tank and add fuel stabilizer. Be sure to run your bike or go for a short ride to get the treatment completely into the fuel system. Carbureted bikes need special consideration. Run fuel treatment into the system, switch the petcock to the OFF position (If it’s not a vacuum unit) and then drain the carbs. For vacuum petcock systems you only need to drain the carbs. Tires: Tires are porous and will lose air while in storage. They will also get a flat spot if left in one place to long. Consider slightly overinflating the tires and moving the bike from time to time. Furry friends: A properly fitted motorcycle cover will keep abrasive dust off and keep moisture out. To avoid any furry friends nesting over the colder months, try covering up your air intake and exhaust openings with plastic bags. (I had stuck steel wool in my pipes one year and forgot them they actually shoot quite far when you start the bike up) Dryer sheets and moth balls work great under the seat. Also placing mothballs around your storage area will help keep rodents out. Speaking of moth balls..... Have you ever smelled mothballs before? Yes? How did you get their little legs apart? Hahaha I feel bad writing this today, as its getting colder and I will soon be taking my bike south for the winter. But to all you folks stuck up here in the frigid North... don’t forget to winterize your rides. Keep the shiny side up.

with Dingo Where did summer go ? It got off to a late start this year and just when we thought that fall was setting in, Mother Nature decides to come back with Summer 2.0 this week. More riding time is always good! The end of this week marks the 17th Annual Biketoberfest, held at the Welland County MC property September 21st. I always look at this event as the last big one in the Niagara area, and that fall is not too far away. Hopefully we will get some sunny days for fall riding along the lakes. Busy weekend, last weekend. Had two charity events back to back, Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was the Desiree’s Ride (Niagara Chapter) charity event and they once again had a good turnout. The starting point is the Knights of Columbus hall located in downtown Niagara Falls, and getting that many bikes out of the city on a Saturday can be a nightmare, but kudos to the blockers who made that part of the ride an easy trip out to the Parkway from downtown, and the rest of the way also. The first stop was Tons of Bike Gear, where free hotdogs, water, and soda was provided. Second stop was Clare’s Harley-Davidson, then on back to the Knights of Columbus hall where dinner was held, along with a penny sale and 50/50 draw.

Sunday’s charity ride was Butchy’s Ride in support of Niagara Hospice. Great turnout at the Golden Brothers Bar and Grill. I believe this is the second event that they’ve held. Riders were out on the route in groups separated by half hour each. The first stop was in Binbrook, with the rest of the stops in Dunnville, Port Colborne, and then back to Welland at the Golden Brothers. There were plenty of prizes to be won, the band, Last of Our Kind set up outside as well, and a great spread of food included with the price of the ride ticket. The organizers are already planning for next year, promising to make it bigger and better. As usual, I didn’t win a damn thing, lol!! Somehow, and I think I got my dates mixed up, I missed the Regulators ride, and that meant I missed out on a fine after ride dinner. My apologies guys.

I have two places this month that are biker friendly stops. Bridge 12 Pub & Eatery, in beautiful “downtown” Port Robinson. Now, Port Robinson is a sleepy little village that was cut off from the rest of the world years ago when a lake ship collided with the bridge spanning the Welland Canal. There’s only a couple of ways in to town, but the attraction here is that you can get a cold brew or, up to 18 different flavors of ice cream!! I think it’s one of the only bars that serve ice cream! The second, really biker friendly establishment, is Knuckleheads Bar & Grill, located on 6092 Main Street in Niagara Falls. This is a complete biker oriented bar & grill, right down to the colors inside. The owners are riders like the rest of us and go out of their way to make everyone welcomed. They have just recently agreed to host our upcoming ‘end of the season’ party event here in the deep south of Ontario. Thanks CJ !!! Looking forward to with working with you!! That’s it for now…..looking forward to seeing what Ma Nature has for us in the upcoming months. It’s like my friend Deb says, she can’t make up her mind how to dress. Bye for now and don’t forget…Ride Safe!! Dave

2 cars ahead of me. Let's see ... 483/429 ... over 12 percent tax! When I got to the window I handed her a 5 and said, "$4.83 for a $4.29 meal is 12 percent tax. That can't be right. Can I talk to the manager?" She gave me my change and called the manager. The manager comes over and I ask what the sales tax is in Huntsville, and she says 8 percent. I say that I just paid $4.83 for a $4.29 meal and that's over 12 percent sales tax. She said that maybe the computer had rung it up wrong or had charged me for the bigger size. She admitted it was supposed to be 4.63, and opened the drawer to give me my extra change. "HA!" I thought to myself. "Six years engineering school has so heightened my mental mathematical adeptness that I can do percentages in my head and my superior intellect has foiled a feeble attempt by a drive-through worker to overcharge me." I took the twenty cents she handed me, proud of my staggering genius, and smugly drove off without my food. ********************************************* A woman was having a daytime affair while her husband was at work . One rainy day she was in bed with her boyfriend when, to her horror, she heard her husband's car pull into the driveway.' Oh my God – Hurry Grab your clothes and jump out the window, my husband's home early!' ' I can't jump out the window , it's raining out there!' 'If my husband catches us in here he'll kill us both!' she replied, ' he's got a hot temper and a gun, so the rain is the least of your problems!' So the boyfriend scoots out of bed, grabs his clothes and jumps out the window, as he ran down the street in the pouring rain, he quickly discovered he had run right into the middle of the town's annual marathon,so he started running along beside the others, about 300 of them. Being naked, with his clothes tucked under his arm , he tried to blend in as best he could. After a little while a small group of runners who had been watching him with some curiosity, jogged closer. ‘Do you always run in the nude one asked. Oh yes! he replied, gasping in air, 'it feels so wonderfully free! Another runner moved a long side, 'Do you always run carrying your clothes with you under your arm? ' Oh, yes' our friend answered breathlessly, 'that way I can get dressed right at the end of the run and get in my car to go home!' Then a third runner cast his eyes a little lower and asked...

Hydraulic Clutch Recalls: The Four Fixes There are three maintenance fixes and one actual component repair for the hydraulic clutch recalls that have plagued both Twin Cam and Milwaukee-8 hydraulic clutches. These recalls involve air leaks, fluid leaks, hydraulic fluid moisture absorption, and ineffective/ defective secondary clutch actuator components. Specified maintenance will alleviate many rider, self inflicted problems. Changing and flushing the DOT 4 hydraulic fluid a minimum of every two years will stop moisture absorption. Both DOT 3 and Dot 4 fluids are hydroscopic, which means they absorb water from the air. Please avoid adding insult to injury when working on hydraulic brake and clutch systems. Do not let DOT 4 fluid contact painted parts as it will cloud, bubble, or quite effectively remove paint. Have a ready supply of water available to flush immediately if this happens. Mechanics and riders alike, inadvertently spill the Dot 4, especially onto the gas tank. Cover the tank, when working on the master cylinder, especially when adding or flushing fluidas the tank is directly below both the brake and the clutch master cylinders. Currently, both hydraulic brakes and the clutch use DOT 4 fluid. Furthermore, fluid on tires will create a slippery situation that may dump an unsuspecting rider. The clutch is no longer mechanically actuated by a hand-operated clutch cable. On this system, when the rider pulls in the clutch cable lever, the action rotates three ball bearings up ramps between two plates inside the righttransmission cover. This pushes the clutch pushrod against the clutch pressure plate. Thus, the pressure plate moves away from the clutch plates allowing them to disengage. When the rider pulls in the clutch lever on the 2013-and-later hydraulically actuated clutches,, the clutch master cylinder creates pressure inthe clutch fluid line. The pressurized fluid forces the internal secondary clutchactuator piston inside the right transmission cover to extend and push the clutch pushrod against the clutch pressure plate to disengage the clutch. There must be a minimum clutch pressure plate movement of at least .086” (2.18 mm) for the hydraulic clutch system to function as designed. If not, something is wrong, perhaps necessitating bleeding the system from air, fixinga fluid leak, flushing the system (changing DOT 4 fluid), or clutch actuator replacement. The secondary clutch actuator is the slave cylinder to the handlebar master cylinder. Slave simply means that it is controlled and activated by the handlebar master cylinder. If the clutch actuator does not generate enough movement to disengage the clutch, replacement is required. Before this, ensure that there is sufficient, clean DOT 4 fluid in the system without evidence of air, moisture absorption, or crud blocking the transfer valves inside the master cylinder. These valves or ports are really small holes that hydraulic fluid travels through whenever the clutch lever is pulled in or let out. A plugged or covered relief port can cause clutch drag, which means the clutch is not totally disengaging. Drag is evidenced by The Rider’s Mag - Page 42

grinding gears when shifting, hard shifting, and/or bike creep while in gear with the clutch lever pulled in. If replacement of the actuator cylinder is necessary, remove the outer, right side transmission cover. Disconnect the clutch hydraulic line and allow the fluid to drain. Undo the three actuator hold down screws to remove the actuator. A small amount of transmission lubricant will drain. There is also an attached rubber diaphragm. Do not allow DOT 4 fluid to contact this rubber protector. The fluid may make the rubber go wonky and distort. Before installing the new actuator, lube the mounting bore in the transmission side cover with a film of transmission oil. It will be necessary to apply steady inward pressure to its piston until it is fully seated in its bore as the piston will naturally move toward the release position. As always with hold downs using more than one fastener as in this case with three actuator mounting screws, thread and tighten evenly. Be sensitive to installing the unit square to prevent binding and possible breakage of the mounting ears. Tighten the screws uniformly, in sequence to a final specified torque of 100 in/lbs to 120 in/lbs (11.2 Nm to 13.6 Nm). Inch pounds (in/lbs) are not foot pounds (ft/lbs). Twelve (12) in/lbs equals one. (1) ft/lb. Connect the two fluid lines and install the flare nut, tightening to 133 in/lbs to 186 in/lbs (15 Nm to 21 Nm). Bleed the clutch control system using a Vacuum Bleeder tool (HD-BB200A). Carefully monitor fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir. Fluid must be maintained in the master cylinder reservoir to avoid air being drawn into the system while using the Vacuum Bleeder. A slight but noticeable bulge of fluid will break the master cylinder fluid surface in the reservoir if all is working well. Correct mechanic procedure will replace fluid without introducing air. If air gets in, then repeat the process. Air is indicated by a spongy or collapsing lever action. This elementary methodology is one of the fixes to ensure proper working of the hydraulic clutch system. At every motorcycle servicing, check the moisture content of the hydroscopic DOT 4 fluid using the DOT 4 Brake Fluid Moisture Tester (HD-48497-A). Follow the instructions included with tool. Flush the clutch system and replace DOT 4 fluid every two years or sooner if the brake fluid test shows moisture content of 3% or greater. This simple maintenance procedure is another one of the fixes to guarantee a proper working hydraulic clutch. Furthermore, adding or removing DOT 4 fluid will not be necessary with a good working system. Adding fluid will indicate a possible leak, which in all probability will continue. Necessary fluid removal is symptomatic of abnormal clutch plate wear. The minimum fiber clutch plate thickness is .143” (3.63 mm). The maximum steel clutch plate warpage specification is .006”. If only one plate out of the set is beyond specification, H-D says to

replace the clutch set. This is just a money grab. To save money, look for a repair shop that buys complete sets and parts them out on an as needed basis. I will finally comment on a personal level regarding the use of hydraulicclutches. The aftermarket has been using them for decades on custom bike builds and normal bike modifications. My experience in using the aftermarkethydraulic clutches is that they made functional clutching easier for those with weak and/or small hands. They seemed problem free. Many, like myself have installed them just for a trippy or different look. I have experienced H-D hydraulic clutches that only Popeye’s forearm strength could cope with. Hydraulics by definition take the work out of systems making them easier not more difficult. The ongoing problems with the secondary clutch actuator are unacceptable. Once can be forgiven as a mistake, twice or more is problematic. Harley is a premium motorcycle that seemingly does not always use premium components or design. American made Polaris motorcycles like the defunct Victory and current Indian do not suffer from the seriously inconvenient H-D clutch complications nor the engine destroying Milwaukee-8 sumping/engine braking systemic problem. Aging demographics are hurting all big V-Twin motorcycle sales. There is not room for all to survive without innovative, attractive design combined with uncompromising quality. Next Riders Mag will discuss the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of the three hydraulic fluids (DOT3, DOT 4, and DOT 5) used in Harley hydraulic brakes and clutches from 1958 to present day. Then, I willmove onto the best of all Harley carburetors, the 1989 to 2006 CV Kehien. Donny Petersen www.donnypetersen.com

Happy fall boys and girls! The colors are bright and the air is crisp, those with air cooled engines can appreciate the importance of that fact. Speaking of air cooled engines, I parted ways with my Indian since last months article. I truly hope the machine gets along better with its new owner. September is always my favorite month to travel with color changing trees and beautiful weather. I have had several amazing fall trips over the years but this one will probably top them all. Getting to the trip has been something of a ride all on its own. I have learned more than once in life, it is best to roll with what you are given and adapt to your situations quickly. Dwelling on the “should haves” and “could haves” will get you nowhere fast. This lesson came in handy over the past month since we all last chatted. This year my partner in crime and I opted for an off road backcountry tour of the western half of the US. There are routes through several of our states called BDRs, Backcountry Discovery Routes. These are backroads and trails through each state that are legal and accessible to plated motorcycles. The routes vary in difficulty and each state has vastly changing terrain to keep life interesting. We traveled through section 3 of the Southern California BDR in March and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Along the routes on this trip, I had some bucket list places and things to check off. There are only two states west of the Mississippi River that I have not ridden a motorcycle in, I have never been to Yosemite National Park, ridden the Pacific Coast Highway, or been to the Golden Gate Bridge. All things we could fit into our on/off road expedition. The BDRs would take us through Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. After all of that backcountry discovering, we would arrive in California and knock the rest of the things off my list. One month before go time, Travis got a promotion at work and would be required to attend training. The training would be four weeks long in Columbus, Ohio and run directly through the time of our trip. Excellent opportunity, super terrible timing.

more than prepared for any weather I encounter and can live self sufficiently in the middle of nowhere for several days if needed….or wanted. This is certainly a trip to reconnect with myself and Mother Nature, as well as some long lost humans. I have reconnected with a childhood friend who lives along my route through Oregon, some friends and my dad are waiting on my arrival in Colorado, and a family friend may show me around Santa Barbara. Needless to say, I have a full 3 weeks of fun and excitement ahead of me! Nineteen days on a NineT might be a bit much, but there’s only one way to find out. If nothing else, I’ll have one hell of a story to tell! The trip maps out to roughly 6300 miles via Mapquest. I’m not sure that all of my “roads” are actually on a map but I’m ok with being lost as long as I’m on my bike.

Well...now what? The routes we had mapped out are best travelled in pairs due to difficulty and dangerousness. But, I still have 3 weeks scheduled off work to play with. Decisions, decisions… A new plan was born. I will visit all of the states and places on my own. Instead of the BDR routes I will travel mostly back highways courtesy of the Rever app, with a few Jeep trails in the mix. And, I will visit several hot springs, beaches, camp in the mountains, and hike in parks along the way. Now, it is one day prior to go time. My bike has been packed for a week and I am loving my new Hepco Becker panniers. Honestly, you would not believe the long list of supplies I managed to pack into these things. I can say, I am The Rider’s Mag - Page 44

The plan is to camp and spend as much time in the great outdoors as possible. We shall see if Mother Nature agrees with that plan. I have stowed away my sub zero sleeping gear as well as an umbrella and a rain jacket. I’m far from a fair weather rider, but I am a bit of a fair

weather camper. Temperature is one thing, however rain is a completely different thing and one that I’m not a fan of tenting in. According to the mountains weather forecast I will most likely run into snow in 3 of the 14 states I plan to pass through. I'm anxious to see if the meteorologists have guessed correctly about this subject. Whatever the weather you can be sure I'll find my way around it and into an amazing adventure. Day one started out with a hundred miles of rain but by mile 625 it was the perfect riding weather! Iowa and Nebraska do not have much to offer so I’m making my way through as fast as possible. Prepare for picture overload in next months Mag! Until then, feel free to follow my 19 days on a NineT on any of the social medias. I'm on the Facebook, Instagram, and Tweet machine under the name MotoRambling. I also recently published an Ebook on Amazon about my trip to Baja Mexico last spring if anyone is interested. It is called, “21 Days To Dirt Bike Baja, What Could Go Wrong?”

The leaves are changing color in much of Eastern Ontario! It is a good excuse to get out and take advantage of what riding weather we have left and enjoy the scenic routes we are blessed with in our part of the province. In September’s column I wrote about the passing of one of the Ottawa area motorcycle community’s Icons, Mike “Bozz” Bossio who aside from being a friend for over 40 yrs., was a man I called a Brother! I want to write and honor the Biker community that came out to celebrate his life one day before his 71st birthday. I hope he was looking down from Valhalla because he would have been blown away to see how many people came out to celebrate his memory and to show both support for his wife, Adele and to his brothers in The Celtic Brotherhood. The doors to the large hall at the Greely Legion opened at 4:00 pm and within thirty minutes there were well over 200 and they just kept coming well into the evening. It was a true affirmation of not only Bozz’s life, but of the sense of family in our community to acknowledge and respect one of their own.

of pictures of Mike over the years that were taken on club rides, parties and events that played during the celebration on a monitor and there was a constant flow of groups of people came up to watch during the day. Adele’s family outdid themselves in catering the food for all the guests with everything from sandwiches to salad plus and lots of desserts! TCB Brother Chuckay produced large vats of different types of chili ranging from super hot to vegetarian because what would the celebration of the life of a biker be without a bowl of chili. You don’t always grasp the reach of a person’s life until you begin to see all the familiar faces! Some, you may not have seen in years and while you always wish it was under happier circumstances, showing respect and honoring the life of a friend still is a reason to gather!

The sound of laughter as old tales are told and retold and better times remembered is music to the ears and a balm for the sole of those who understand Brotherhood.

I am going to mention many names of people and clubs that attended I will most certainly miss some, and to them, I apologize profusely because no disrespect was intended. Both Bozz’s children and grandchildren worked hard to create a tribute table and Paul, Bozz’s son, even rode his father’s motorcycles into the hall (with permission) and parked just a bit in front of the table. Scribe aka Chris O’Connor made an incredible montage The Rider’s Mag - Page 46

Some of the early faces to arrive and give their respects to Adele were long time friends and fellow members of the Retreads were Buck & Denise Sarazin! They have known Bozz for decades and back about 10 years ago both couples went out to Sturgis together. Buck and I have been friends for over 50 yrs and celebrated more than one of Bozz’s birthdays together. While at a cruise night recently, we found ourselves discussing how many friends we have lost in the last few years! I suppose you could call it “Survivors Lament”. The father and son team of Doug and James Taylor made sure that all the appropriate parties got their brotherhood hug and sat with Duane Chevalier of the Simple Men MC,

and Marc Seguin. The ever lovely, Lucie Guilbault who recently became a member of the “Misfit Mavens”. This is a group of women who ride and are associated with the Falcons MC. At the table next to them was mostly members of the Ottawa Chapter of BACA (bikers against child abuse) including Big Bird aka Bob Weber, Titan aka Terrill Leclair, Animal aka Dwayne Haddad along with Boo, Popeye and several other members.

As well as many of the BACA crew I was surprised we had a visit from Thor, aka Tom Allain & the lovely Nathalie Lacasse, both of whom will be moving to the west coast in the near future. Wayne Leblanc aka Dis Dain, national president of Eyes of Odin MC who along with Duane Chevalier, my wife Bette refers to them as my “illegitimate Sons”, came

down from Petawawa to pay his respects. Perry Montgomery of Simple Men MC and his wife Geneane came up from Cornwall to see what they could do to help. Mike & Adele were close friends. Other clubs that were kind enough to come were the Falcons MC, the Ruffians MC, Bondslaves MC, Retreads MC and ARM MC (association of recovering motorcyclists) to name just a few. A long-time friend to both Bozz and myself, Coop aka Stephen Cooper, came up from the Maritimes to attend the event and all of us go back to the days of the parties up the valley with the Ottawa Valley Touring Club back around the early 80’s and was greatly appreciated. Ken Carter, Don Flinn along with Hillbilly, Nelia and several other members of the Capital City Bikers Church came by to pay their respects and we thank them! TCB has always been strong supporters of CCBC and Bozz and the rest of us have been regulars at nearly every one of the events they host and it wouldn’t be Xmas without participating in the Church’s Christmas Dinner. There were several familiar faces from the earlier days of SOAR (Society of Ottawa Area Riders) who dropped by. Keith Fong, who for the last few years, was the co-chair of the Ride for Dad. Don Hutchinson, who, aside from being a lawyer, pastor and biker was kind enough over the years to provide legal advice and direction to SOAR. Peri and Tim Poirier of B.A. Machine Performance Cycle stopped after they closed the shop. We also had a surprise visit by two friends who came up from the States for an extended visit to see everyone. They got cut off by a van on their way to cruise night at Rideau Carleton! She had to spend about a week in the hospital and Rocky had both his arms banged up badly and the brand new trike they were riding a write-off but it was still great to see them before they headed back home. A big thank you to Michel Dupuis and Raquel Thibault from the 2804 Dice Run in Cassleman! Doing the memorial breakfast for Denis was one of our must do events and Bozz and the brothers always looked forward to it each Spring . Special thanks to Dick Budge of the Veterans Canada MC, and a very, very, special thanks to Mike “Grinder” Maloney! He was kind enough to design and make one of his incredible metal The Rider’s Mag - Page 47

sculptures out of motorcycle parts that we have named “Da Bozz”! It is holding a wrench in one hand because Bozz was a mechanic and a spatula in the other because he loved cooking for people and along with his brothers in the TCB feed a couple of thousand Bikers each season for free to promote brain injury awareness and brotherhood. Plaques with a rendition of the trophy will be awarded by the Brotherhood each year to individuals that they consider people who have gone that extra mile to make the Biker community better. Also we would like to thank Sue Milner and her hubby Pappa Drifter for the memorial poem and wooden book display she made the club in Bozz’s memory! It will be placed with all the other “treasures” that The Celtic Brotherhood consider special. From the Bossio family and all the members of The Celtic Brotherhood to all our friends and family in the Biker and Motorcycle Community for your kindness to come out and help us celebrate Bozz’s life because he helped to make a difference! Brotherhood! The first Saturday in September we were invited by Jim Poulin of the Last Disciples MC to come out to Rockland and participate in a birthday party he was putting on for his wife Veronica! She, like many of our wives was turning 29 years old .. again! Jim and Veronica try to support nearly every event in Ottawa and the surrounding area! They are active members in the Capital City Bikers Church. Jim was one of the founders of the annual Fall & Spring Motorcycle Swap Meets that were held at the Greely Legion. Rain was forecast, but it held off and the whole party took place in their backyard and Jim’s mancave! About 50 or so people and two dogs helped celebrate one of the true ladies of grace in our motorcycle community. It was one of those great summer evenings where it all just came together! Family, friends and lots of food. Blair Gardener, president of ARM MC (association of recovering motorcyclists) who not only brought his young granddaughter with him as his “date” but also brought an acoustic guitar and throughout the evening entertained the guest with an incredible selection of songs. Blair is a well know Ottawa area musician/entertainer and he added a lot to the evening. I spent much of the evening kidding around and chatting with Yves Brisbois & Marty Laporte and other members of the Last Disciples MC until it was time for the cake ceremony. Veronica is an amazing lady and everyone enjoyed watching her open gifts as much as she did getting them. Much thanks to the Poulin family and the LDMC for a great evening. The following Saturday was the Awareness Ride for Brain Injury hosted by The Celtic Brotherhood and while they had hoped for better weather than they experienced for their Spring ride they sadly lucked out and had to deal with lots of clouds and periods of rain which may be the darker side of the expression “the luck of the Irish”. Now that the groaning is over TCB would like to thank all the volunteers like Warren Winter, Myke Bellefeuille & his wife Louise, Raquel Thibault , Michel Dupuis for getting us the eggs and of course TCB’s own Denise Lacasse Nicholson and a whole bunch of other people who come to support the club! Because without all your help and assistance the work TCB does would never get done. Lastly, but far from least, TCB wants to thank everyone who came out anyway to show their support and the brave souls that actually went on the ride, please know that the members of The Celtic Brotherhood think you are all freaking awesome! Nuff Said! The following day the LDMC held their Annual Fall Motorcycle Swap Meet and unlike the previous day, it was sunny The Rider’s Mag - Page 48

and by the time the doors opened a hundred or so riders were ready to do some treasure hunting. This swap meet has become not only the place for riders and builders to shop or sell motorcycle parts because it is required that most of what a vendor is selling is actually motorcycle parts or motorcycle related! It has also become one of the last social events of the riding season. There were a lot of familiar faces in the building on both sides of the tables such as Doug Taylor, Al Carmichael, Merlin, Bonez. Keep in mind, in the future to come by and enjoy the show. For the second time in this article I want to thank Jim Poulin and all of the Last Disciples MC for not only hosting this show, but because as a total surprise to any of the TCB members present they were called up on the stage and given an award acknowledging all the things they do for the biker community over the year. The award was an engraved metal plaque along with the club’s logo airbrushed on a license blank done by a member of LDMC and

mounted on barn board which made it special. TCB is busy all year donating thousands of free breakfasts to the participants of other clubs events to promote brain injury awareness and brotherhood. They are the host club for the Awareness Ride for Brain Injury and the Ride for Autism Ottawa as well as the Annual Xmas Gift & Craft show for Bikers. They were honored to receive this amazing award they made themselves for TCB’s contributions to the motorcycle community and humbled which can only be followed by the words MLLH&R and most of all Brotherhood! I realize that many of you might wonder why I go out of my way to mention The Rider’s Mag - Page 49

the names of people or clubs that participate or help out in some way in our biker community. That is exactly why I do it! We are a community and I believe that it is important to recognize those clubs or individuals who go that extra mile to make things better! Maybe it will encourage more of you to do the same! Trust me, even though it can tiring, it is pretty amazing when you actually get to meet your fellow riders and get to know them. One other thing that I want all of my readers and supporters of The Riders Mag to know is that there is over a half a million brain injury survivors in the province of Ontario alone and many of them are bikers but even if they weren’t, they are our family members, our friends, our neighbors and people we work with who need our support for they are dealing with the “Invisible Injury” so please contact your local brain injury association to see about helping them out whether by donating money or even better as a volunteer. If you are not sure who to contact then please email me at my address below and I will find out for you. If you would like any more information about events or rides that I mention in my column you can go on Facebook and go to “Motorcyco Beau’s Biker Events & Ride in Eastern Ontario and as always I urge you to support the events and rides that are created by bikers and clubs in your area! Unlike slick organizations that run events, the local riders and clubs will be the same people that will come and support yours. Please remember to spend your money with businesses such as those who advertise in The Riders Mag because they have proven themselves to be Biker Friendly and shown their support for our lifestyle. in turn they deserve our support and business back. If you have any issues that you think might be of interest to your fellow readers please reach out to me and let me know either by email or Facebook. If you have an event or ride or you are a business that deals with either motorcycles or the people who ride them you might like to advertize or even perhaps become a distributor of The Riders Mag, please contact me by email or phone. As always, I want you please remember that we make our Motorcycle Communities stronger by making them better. email: theridersmag.beau@gmail.com Twiiter..
