Hey out there, and welcome to the November edition of the Mag! Yes, November, as we are now back to publishing 12 issues per year! You should notice a departure from our normal format with the cover and calendar feature and instead of always having a girl on a bike, we will now and then, try to reflect the diversity of our chosen lifestyle which is young and old male and female and everything in between! It has been, and continues to be, a struggle, and we still have some challenges to overcome, some rough roads to navigate and storms to weather, but we are still upright and ready to face whatever the future holds! Sure, we have missed a couple of deadlines with the printer as we try to overcome the ever-present glitches that still pop up from time to time! We may be late to print but the online is out before the end of the Month on ISSUU.com! You can find an archive of digital copies of Mags from years past as well! Plus, it is not the best of times for most printed publications. We had to reassess the situation and accept the reality that our advertising revenues have not kept pace with the costs and if we stayed on that course we are destined to fail! Many publications have already been forced to swallow the hard truth and have either ceased to exist or have gone totally digital, as I hear that Iron Horse Magazine did recently! We too, have noticed a huge trend with our readers and have experienced a dramatic increase in traffic on our online edition of the Mag. Online, allows us to track page performance and link outs so we can better gauge what our readers are responding to! We already know that digital publications are probably the way of the future and that we have to put more effort in that direction if we want to be current and relevant to survive! Many of our readers have already discovered the advantages of the online version and actually prefer to read it on their computers, smart phones and tablets! We are getting set to launch the new Website that I’ve been promising for as long as I can remember! According to recent reports from the crew who serve at the great frontier known as the World Wide Web in the far reaches of cyber space, the aforementioned glitches and such, have been subdued and overcome and we should be up and running any millennium now! I don’t personally know anything about computers, other than they can be a total pain in the ass! I further believe that the old saying “To err is human, but to really fuck things up, you need a computer!” is 100% truth. Other Readers, are strictly “Old School”, who, still cling to their old flip phones and such like they are the last little bit of old new technology before they are assimilated into the new World order! They say that they just want phones that they can make phone calls on! They don’t need them to do fancy shit like playing movies, taking pictures and video and have a multitude of apps that our supposed to make our lives better through technology! They The Rider’s Mag - Page 6

don’t receive or send e mails, texts, tweets, Instagram or whatever the newest trend Social media happens to be! They like to hold an actual magazine in their hands and the ability to roll it up and toss it in the bags of their bikes! For them, we are keeping the printed Mag going! But and it is a big but! We are not in a financial position to absorb the cost of printing and distribution so that our readers can enjoy our content for free. We also can’t afford to distribute large bundles of Mags to as many outlets as we used to, only to have many of them thrown out unread! While, some places, may indeed, go through lots of Mags, each spot differs and some regular readers that don’t need 50 or 100 copies at that location when 25 or less would be sufficient to fit their actual needs! Some should just look at buying a subscription. If you want to have a printed Mag, we will print it and get it to you as long as it is feasible, but it isn’t going to be free! We need your support! Drop that Twoony in the slot or buy a subscription and support the Mag and the spot where they carry the Mag! Our subscription numbers have risen drastically over the course of the last year, so that tells us that many of our readers have recognized the realities and circumstances that we face and have responded! We have had recognize some other realities and to take some necessary measures in order to stay afloat! Reality, dictated the fact that our margins weren’t strong enough to sustain us as we were. We had to switch away from the very expensive glossy cover and insert with the rest done in newsprint that we initiated to improve the overall quality of parts of the Mag! Rather than go super cheap, with all newsprint, we chose to go with a top quality bookstock front to back instead, as it provides really good reproduction of pictures and gives solid quality throughout the entire Mag. Adding a request of a $2.00 donation per copy is one of the other measures and it has helped quite a bit but we have found that some out there, begrudge the fee as it used to be free and they think that it should remain that way! We can’t and won’t work for free! That $2.00 helps defray the ever-rising cost of distributing the Mags across the Country! It serves as an incentive to our volunteers to establish and maintain those delivery routes! I tried doing most of the deliveries myself but it is just too much ground to cover with not enough hours available to get it all done within anything that could be considered an acceptable timeframe! Thus, we have volunteers like Dez and Dingo Dave who cover Burlington, Oakville, and the territory on the other side of the big Bridge into Hamilton, and beyond, into the bowels of the Niagara region! They spread the words of The Riders Mag through Port Dover and all along their portion of the South Coast! They also do a Monthly column about the goings on and pertinent information from their respective turf!

Kim, aka “The Road Runner” cuts a wide swath through Central Ontario, ranging from Kitchener, Cambridge, Guelph up through Kincardine, Port Elgin, Owen Sound, Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, Orangeville, Bolton and all the high and low spots in between! Dazzling Dawn looks after the needs of the East through Lindsay, Peterborough, Bridgenorth and so on even couriering Beau his supply, with which to serve the Ottawa Valley and then on into Little Red Country! It is good to have Our Northern Guy back in action up in the North Country of Sudbury and Manitoulin Island! Their vehicles don’t run for free and while working for the Mag is usually inspired more by a love of the publication and our lifestyle, than by any thoughts of actually making money! Unfortunately, you can’t live on that love and you can say all the soothing words and even kiss your vehicles but I’ve yet been able to coax a single extra drop of gas from any of my bikes or trucks! Many Clubs and organizers of events all request that we come out and provide coverage of their events but don’t want to spend anything on advertising! We will support those who support us! I have been doing these events for years and other than the really big events, no other media shows up! If they do, it is to promote the same tired old rhetoric and stereotypical crap that the police and politicians have been cramming down the public’s throats for years! We are monitoring what goes on at each of our distribution spots and will give it some more time for people to get used to dropping a Twoony into the box on the honour system! Those spots where all or most of The Mags are gone with little or nothing in the way of money in the box, will have those boxes removed and will be taken off our delivery lists! On a personal note, to those who have been asking, Godzilla remains in Hospital and is now showing some signs of improvement! It is going to be a long, hard haul on a road that seems to be mostly uphill but the staff at the Rehab Centre are truly amazing! They are caring, and knowledgeable, with unlimited patience and ‘Zilla is determined to get well and return to me. Her spirits are good and she relishes each accomplishment in her treatment as a small but important step in her recovery! Thanks to you all for caring! Dealing with all this stuff has really affected my ability to get out and about to many events that I just did and took it in my stride! I apologize to all but I can only do just so much within the timeframe that my circumstances permit! I wanted to get out to Biketoberfest, Fort Erie Swap meet and several Bacchus MC events but just couldn’t! I’d list more but it would only serve to depress me! Suffice it to say; if you didn’t see me at your event, I’m terribly sorry!

Port Dover - Sept. 2019

I did not go to Port Dover on this occasion in support of a boycott of the event, issued by the OCC (Ontario Confederation of Clubs). This is in regards to the disrespectful, discriminatory, unfair, unconstitutional, and in the minds of many, illegal way that the Town, County and the Provincial Police and many politicians have conducted themselves and treated Motorcycle Clubs, certain legitimate businesses and Bikers in general in the past and present! This event, that began years ago by a core group of riders as a rendezvous to celebrate the lifestyle, the lives and the bonds of those friendship blossomed into an annual event that managed to somehow managed to grow beyond anyone’s expectations! It wasn’t even anticipated back in those days, that it would reverberate to anyone beyond that core group. It was just bikers gathering with other bikers. Bikers like to gather and party and as gatherings go, this was doing OK. It was still fairly low keyed but very much enjoyed by all who came out! So, it grew a little, then a lot! Still good, still a great time! Then, as I remember it, (And I have had many agree with this scenario.) the Toronto Sun ran a spread on the celebration including a shot on the front page of a certain local lady, walking topless down the Street and that really sensationalized the party and things just took off from there! For whatever reason, it became some sort of right of passage that if you bought a motorcycle, you absolutely had to go to Port Dover for Friday 13th or you couldn’t call yourself a biker! And through rain or shine, shitstorms, snow storms, heat and sub-zero freeze the balls off a brass-monkey weather they came! Real bikers, Wanna be Bikers, pretend bikers, people dressed like they were bikers and hundreds who just wanted to gawk at bikers! Thong man crawled out from under some rock and began parading up and down main Street posing for pictures with people who just wanted to look like they were cool! Vendors selling t shirts, street meat, leather, patches, pins and all kinds of goods invaded the Town and turned it into a carnival! Camp grounds sprang up everywhere they could fit them in, school yards, back yards, front yards, empty buildings, churches, parking lots! It was free enterprise and it was huge and unfortunately doomed to be manipulated and spoiled! The happening also spawned tremendous greed as everybody wanted to cash in on this phenomenon! The town sold passes and licenses were issued! They formed a special committee whose sole concern was Friday 13 and how to milk as much cash from it as humanly possible! News crews, from all over, would show up to get a cool piece for there nightly news segment! It began to feel like more of a freakshow than a celebration of our lifestyle! It became one huge gathering after another and picked up momentum! Suddenly, Friday 13th had more that some significance for more than just a few folks suffering from triskaidekaphobia, a phobia few of us knew or cared about! It could now be translated to read; huge biker party complete with lots of booze and topless women! That is bound to translate into a lot of attention and huge crowds because who doesn’t like lots of booze and topless women! But as we all know, parties can get out of hand when they become too well known and too popular and they tend to gather The Rider’s Mag - Page 7

unwanted attention from some certain undesirables, whose attendance can only bring a party down! Cops! It drew the full attention of the heat! That is a huge downer, right off the bat, for any party, no matter what size! The Police seized the golden opportunity to use what had always been a peaceful, relatively uneventful, celebration of biker lifestyle into a cash cow! They used (Some say manipulated.) the main stream media’s constant warnings of an imminent “Biker War”, Fear Mongering, intimidation tactics, immense political resources and clout to further their own agenda and take it to where it is today. To say they pulled out all the stops, would be a huge understatement! The police showed up in full strength, in full battle gear complete with full body armour and fully automatic weapons, as if they were going into war with the North Korean regime, or pitted against ISIS insurgents, whenever Friday 13th rolled around! They roamed the streets in little goon squads ready to do battle! To many of us, they were more of a joke than anything else but they thought they looked pretty damn cool! They must have been practising those tough guy looks in the mirror for Months! Now don’t think that they get all dressed up like that for fun or for free! There is a serious price tag attached to this kind of costume party and they are not shy when it comes to charging for their services! It might have been asked at one of these meetings with Town Council.; “Do we really need this kind of Police protection at this kind of expense?” The reply would have been; “Hell yeah!” There is an imminent Biker War about to break out right here on the quaint and friendly Streets of Port Dover! Did you not watch the video we put in the propaganda package that we supplied at great expense (Included with our invoice.), This will be a war zone, the likes of which we haven’t witnessed since World War 2 when those German fellows caused all that ruckus! That’s why we are here! We are going to nip this thing in the bud! See our badges! They don’t give these things to just anybody! We are the professionals! Trust us! No, the name police bear no similarity or reference to Gestapo, wait a minute! It does but let’s not confuse things! Anyhow you have a whole lot of trouble coming to town on vehicles referred to as bikes! Bikes! Bikes start with a b, but rhymes with “T” and so does “Terrorist” and that is what you’ve got heading your way! Soon your quaint little tourist town will be a Terrorist Mecca!” Anyhow, the boycott was issued and most Clubs complied, other than the Hells Angels, who showed up I huge numbers to, as some put it; “Paint the Town Red and White” It seemed appropriate, as The Hells Angels Motorcycle Club was the main target of the Police campaign. Legitimate companies, set up to sell Hells Angels Support Gear were denied licenses to set up shop and declared by the Police to be criminal enterprises! Without Court orders or rulings, the Police declared these companies to be illegal enterprises engaged in supporting criminal organizations! I would think that this is slightly overstepping the bounds of their level of expertise and authority let alone, their job description, jurisdiction and mandate! But then again, when did that ever stop some zealot with a badge and or a title, who was really serious about bringing in some serious coin for the Department. Who cares if you have to exert a little power over those they regard to be lesser beings (Oh yeah that means everybody who isn’t them) who should automatically bow down to their real or just perceived powers! Anyhow, since they were forbidden from selling shirts at Port Dover, the Hells Angels showed up and gave away over 4,000 red and white t shirts, each emblazoned with their Support 81, Ontario, message on the front and on the back, a list of the fundamental rights and freedoms that they and their supporters would be denied if the Police had their way! a) Freedom of conscience and religion. b) Freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression including freedom of the press and other media communication. c) Freedom of peaceful assembly d) Freedom of association This would be a coup for The Hells Angels Motorcycle Club and a giant stride in the right direction for all Motorcycle Clubs, and individuals! Attendance for the event was way down and those who were there, were outfitted for the occasion by the Club that the Cops were trying to supress and control! The huge Police presence was not and is not required in Port Dover! It is a merely training session in control tactics to be used on a larger scale at some point in the future and the taxpayers’ foot the bill and our rights and freedoms as citizens are moved closer to the slippery slope! Police seek more restrictions against all Clubs and individuals and increased powers and controls over all citizens all the time! That is evident in some of the recent laws that have been rammed through legislature under the guise of being for the protection of the public and shoved down our throats that give more power to police and put the onus on the citizens to prove innocence rather than the police doing their job and to prove guilt! We are becoming more aware of these increases in power for authorities while our individual rights and freedoms are forever being stripped from us at an alarming rate! Let’s not let the happenings in Port Dover, Friday 13, 2019 fade from our minds as just a one time happening where a group made a point that they will not be bullied or intimidated! They will not be dictated to as to what they will wear and associate with merely because the Police don’t like it! Let us use what happened there as a Springboard in the fight to regain what rights and freedoms have been stripped from us already and protect the ones that are still existing but in peril! We need to be aware and vigilant so we don’t lose anymore! For example, Canadian Citizens, with even those who own property and have family South of Border, having no criminal records are being denied entry to the United States on the grounds that they belong to a Motorcycle Club, have past membership in a Motorcycle Club or even an association with a Motorcycle Club! That situation is escalating due to the fact that information is being shared with authorities in the United States by Canadian Law Enforcement The Rider’s Mag - Page 8

Agencies that is casting us in a negative light and putting us in the same category as terrorists! This is another cause for another time! I will keep you all informed as new stuff develops!

Paws for Cause– Docville

I squeezed in a short visit out to Docville in Bowmanville to check out a fundraising event that a long-time friend, Donna had organized to raise awareness and financial support for a cause near and dear to her heart! Donna is a long-time advocate of animal rescue, kind treatment of animals and pretty well anything related to helping our furry friends! I am also a sucker for anything to do with animal welfare and while I couldn’t do free ads, we do have very good charitable rates and she took us up on it! I drove the truck out to the event rather than taking the trike as I had a full schedule for the day prior to this event and after as well! I found out that another of our writers; Tantalizing Terry was there as well and was busy enjoying herself trying her hand at some of the games that had been set up along with a friend of hers, Michelle! I heard that our little Roadrunner Kim was around somewhere as well but never ran into her! This is an amazing property and it lends itself well to this kind of event! Donna and company try to use every available inch of it as she is very versatile, inventive and has enough energy for ten ladies! There was a game called plinko or something where you dropped a disc or something down a long board. This board was filled with intervals of pegs and the pegs would determine what course your chip took you either won or didn’t win when it came to rest in spaces at the bottom that were marked with various prizes or consequences! There was also a putting game and another that was like shuffle board or curling where you would slide a Twonie down a board towards a Texas mickey and whomever got their coin closest to the bottle at the end of the night won the bottle! It was an ongoing battle as you could try to knock out opposing players coins! Inside the barn/event centre, I found a huge assortment of door prizes and selection of amazing artwork that was for sale but I was unable to find out how much before I left. I tried my hand at the Crown and anchor table and left empty handed but felt good about losing, as it all went to a good cause and I believe that the true spirit of event such as this isn’t to come away a big winner but to have fun and support the cause and make the cause the big winner! Doc himself came around to see me and he is always great to talk to and he is very well respected out that way for making his property available for some of the best parties around! There were several great bands performing and entertaining the crowd with some great old rock ‘n roll tunes throughout the day! It was a great day and judging by the number of people still coming in as I left, it would be a long and good night in Docville! As I stated earlier, I did have more stuff to do before my day would be considered to be done, and headed off into the night! The Rider’s Mag - Page 9

Black Hawks Motorcycle Club – Show and Shine 2019

It was a pretty nice-looking day, albeit a little cool, as I climbed aboard the trike and fired her up and headed off towards Hamilton! The cool weather agreed with the trike and she was blazing along at a decent clip and eating up the miles at a goodly pace and It felt great being out on the road on her for a change! It had been a difficult year with so much personal stuff going on with many issues that had to take precedence over the bikes and stuff! Saddle time where I could just enjoy the ride was at a premium, and I had my mind set on some getting some wind therapy and unwinding today! I was on the 407 cruising comfortably and as I neared the 403, I was suddenly torn from my peaceful state of mind by this ungodly racket coming from the vicinity of the motor! I was about to pull over when I roughly diagnosed the problem on the fly, as an exhaust leak of major proportions! I did a visual inspection from where I was and knew pretty much where it was and that it was a break in the crossover pipe by the rear cylinder! The same thing happened with Petoonia a bunch of years ago and the same has happened to a lot of my friends in the past as well, so I just reached down with a gloved right hand to see if anything was loose or rattling or in danger of falling off! That is when too late, I remembered that the finger tips on those particular gloves were totally worn out and offered no protection whatsoever from hot exhaust pipes or anything else! The searing pain was ample reminder to be filed away for future reference. These were a pair of gloves that my long deceased Son had given me more than 30 years ago, that I will never part with and still wear whenever I can but I really should get those fingers repaired. Anyway, I kept going, the pain from my freshly grilled finger tips at least somewhat distracting me from the bark, blare and blatt coming from the broken exhaust pipe and the knowledge that I would have to put up with it all the way home didn’t help my mood either. Also, I had forgotten to charge my MP3 Player and it ran out of juice about that time as well, which is fine because I wouldn’t have been able to hear any tunes over the din anyhow! There are a few things that I can think of right off the top of my head that can instantly make you feel better about your particular situation, or lot in life and forget your troubles! One, I am probably too old for now and besides that, my wife of 50 plus years is in the Hospital, the other is spending quality time with a good bunch of people on a great day! The great bunch of people are in abundance here as this is a fine old Club who have earned a ton of respect and have all been around the block more than a couple of times! Toss in a whole bunch of great looking Motorcycles, great tunes, some great food and a cold 50 or two and you have the makings of a pretty fine afternoon! They in turn tend to attract a similar bunch of folks out to their events! They had an excellent turn out! So it was, as I settled in after parking my noisy old trike in the back of the lot and checking out the large angry looking blister that had formed on my finger, taking pictures, shaking hands and even engaging in a hearty hug or two despite my injury as I am a well seasoned rotund roving reporter and used to working injured! There was also a pretty blonde lady wandering around chatting with people, taking pictures and pretty much doing what I do! My curiosity aroused, I wandered over and introduced myself to the lady who turned out to be Natasha Willis, a freelance photographer and special events photographer out for the day checking out the scene and building her portfolio. I looked up to see our own Bad Bob riding in on his fine-looking decker and the two of us roamed around together checking out some of the great machines on display here and shooting the breeze as we don’t see as

much of one another as we once did! had never been here before and my first take just judging from the size and condition of the parking lot was Wow! This is the 447 Club that used to be part of the Hamilton airport

and was part of the aircraft museum and occupied a hanger! When it came about that the airport needed to expand into the hanger that was home to the museum, the club or museum had to find a new home! That was solved when the present building that up until that point was a Chinese restaurant became available! The building is huge and The Black Hawks use it for their meeting and events such as this and also help out when the Hall is rented out for events by looking after security and the parking. It is quite the site to see with a lot of pictures depicting some of Canadas achievements and military history and plenty of wartime memorabilia! There are model airplanes on display everywhere, hanging from the ceilings that were painted to look like the sky complete with clouds! I could have spent hours just checking out all the stuff that has been preserved and displayed so well here. I know my buddy Dusty would go nuts seeing all those model airplanes as he has quite a collection happening himself! Back to the Show and Shine! It is quite appropriate that the Blackhawks are holding their meetings in a museum! The Club has a solid respect for history! They have a long, proud and storied history and their display of old pictures, motorcycle clothing and memorabilia pays homage to bygone years and respect for friends and members who have come and gone through the years! It is worth checking out and quite informative! I wandered through the large property meeting and greeting folks along the way but care to make sure I scheduled my 50 breaks at the proper intervals so I wouldn’t become dehydrated! It was good to see Big Bill and little Willy G out for the event! There were several vendors that seemed to be doing great business and a fantastic local Band by the name of John Atlee band kept the crowd entertained with a tremendous catalogue of great old Rock ’n roll tunes that spanned many decades and genres check out johnatleeband@gmail.com or call 905 929 7720. They day flew by and soon it was time to gather inside where I took pictures and could sneak in one last 50 to kind of settle me in for the long ride home listening to the blatt and blare of my broken exhaust after the awards were presented and the door prizes were given out! It was a great day! Thanks for having me out!

Brothers of the Blade – Daybreak field day 2109

This event was put off from earlier this summer when the threat of rain and severe storms forced The Club to reschedule it! They take no chances with the welfare and well being of the guests who come to this property! I have to say, that of all the events I go to in the course of a year, every year, this event, has hands down, been my favourite event each and every year for I don’t know how long! I don’t know exactly what it is as there are just so many things happening all at once and just so many emotions that get touched and played upon! I can’t help but to leave here in good spirits and just feeling happy to have been part of it and experiencing something that is truly genuine! Maybe it is the attention to detail in the preparation for this day that is put into it! Maybe it is the anticipation as the cars, busses and vans pull into the well-maintained property and the guests are literally vibrating from the excitement and they leap from those vehicles into the waiting arms of these bikers!

The Rider’s Mag - Page 11

It is all smiles and laughter from that point on right up until they leave at the end of it all! In fact, the smiles linger on the faces of the crew of Members, family and friends who all pitch in to make the day special long after the last guest leaves! There is a lot to do here as a full day’s activities are planned and delivered! From the Tattoo parlour where many removeable tattoos are applied to guests anxious to receive them! There are the modified biker games such as the wiener bite, the egg race and the potato in the haystack! There is also a huge Barbecue with tons of food and refreshment for all! However, the motorcycle rides are far and away the highlight of the day for these folks and a couple even showed up wearing their own helmets so they would be ready right off the hop! They line up waiting patiently for their turn to ride be loaded up using specially designed and constructed ramps and then unloaded using another similar ramp at the end of the ride. The Blades don’t skimp out on the rides either, with some members taking three or more laps around the property much to the delight of their passenger! They all get pictures of themselves on those bikes and these pictures are kept and cherished! One young man was visibly disappointed by something! It was soon apparent as Swanny rolled in late and this young fellow’s face lit right up and made it quite clear that he wanted to ride with him on his bike! He his Mom and Dad were thrilled when Swanny pulled up on his bike, loaded his passenger on board and gave him several laps around the property much to his and his family’s delight! It is funny how some people can make an instant connection that lasts! This is a fantastic day full of magic, smiles and fun that these folks don’t get enough of! I know that I can’t get enough of it and look forward to attending next year! The Blades do this through fundraisers throughout the year through their own WISH (Working with the Handicapped) Foundation which they administer through their own Board of Directors! They help with funding of projects and needs of several group homes throughout Southern Ontario!

There are a lot of people who do a lot of things to make this day a success that go beyond the Club and I’d like to make special mention of one such gentleman. While not specifically part of this day. What he does makes a difference in the day to day running of a Clubhouse! His name is Brent Brethour and he owns and operates Brent Brethour Septic Tank Cleaning in Stouffville Ont. He had been asked to quote on doing the job for the Clubhouse and he gave them a fair price that was agreed upon. He knew nothing about the Club or what they were all about! However, Brent is also ma rider and upon showing up here to check out the Daybreak field day one Year, he was so impressed that he has been donating his services to the Club ever since! I have been acquainted with Bruce for some time now but didn’t know what he did and I had not heard this story until recently. I am impressed with his generosity and his humanity and feel it deserves acknowledgement! Well we have a lot coming up in the not too distant future! I guess the Peterborough Fall Swap meet will be our next official outing! I am truly sorry to have missed the Fort Erie, Fall Swap meet but shit happens and we have to deal with it! Then it will be getting ready for the Super Show at the International Centre the first week of January! See you out there!

In September ABATE Chapter 9 was approached by Slim of the Widows Sons that there was a young girl in need of a new service dog as her current one is retiring. ( see PP 2.0 Story attached to explain) The cost of this training and dog was approx. $8,000.00. It was decided that ABATE 9 & Widows Sons would host a Card night to help with funds. This was help Sept 28 at the home of ABATE 9. Over 100 people attended paying a $5.00 entry and with several donations for other clubs, personal friends and a booze basket raffle, the event ended up raising $6,000.00. The family and trainer of the dog named Spartacus also attended. (Thames Center Service Dogs) (See attached the poster they provided Paighton Project 2.0)also a picture of the donation that was made to Paighton on Oct 6 2019

Ronald McDonald Tab Donation ABATE Chapter 9 + 7 were looking for a place to donate can tabs. We discovered Ronald McDonald House of South Western Ontario collected them to offset small expenses for the family they service. On Oct 6 both Chapters showed up at RMH SWO to donate 49 LBS of tabs. They were very grateful for this donation and we decided we would make this an annual event. Thank to Chapter 7 White Squirrels for their help with this.

2019 Ride 4 Paws This is an annual event we hold with a ride earlier in the year, then we attended the London Humane Society to sponsor 1 dog & 1 cat crate, plus drop off any supplies we collect This weekend of giving was a effort on all involved and started about 10:30 and ended about 2:00. Do you always wear a condom when you run?' Nope just when it's raining . ********************************* I'VE BEEN BANNED FROM TRACTOR SUPPLY.. Yesterday I was at my local TSC store buying a large bag of my dog's food for my loyal livestock guard dog and was in the checkout, when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog? What did she think I had an elephant? So, since I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Dog Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn’t, because I ended up in hospital last time, but I'd lost 10 pounds before I woke up in intensive care with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pockets with dog nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked me if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off the curb to sniff an Irish Setter's rear end and a car hit me. I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard. I'm now banned from Tractor Supply. Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the world to think of things to say. ********************************** The teacher gave her fifth grade class an assignment: Get their parents to tell them a story with a moral at the end of it. --The next day, the kids came back and, one by one, began to tell their stories. There were all the regular types of stuff: Spilled milk and pennies saved. But then the teacher realized, that only Janie was left. "Janie, do you have a story to share?" "Yes ma'am. My daddy told me a story about my Mommy. She was a Marine pilot in Desert Storm, and her plane got hit. She had to bail out over enemy territory, and all she had was a flask of whiskey, a pistol, and a survival knife. She drank the whiskey on the way down so the bottle wouldn't break, and then she parachuted right into the middle of 20 Iraqi troops........ She shot 15 of them with the pistol, until she ran out of bullets, killed four more with the knife, till the blade broke, and then she killed the last Iraqi with her bare hands." ''Good Heavens, 'said the horrified teacher. What did your Daddy tell you was the moral to this horrible story'?" ...."Don't Screw with Mommy when she's been drinking. *************************************** There is nothing worse than a Doctor's Receptionist who insists you tell her what is wrong with you in a room full of other patients. I know most of us have experienced this, and I love the way this guy handled it. A 65-year-old man walked into a crowded waiting room and approached the desk. The Receptionist said, 'Yes sir, what are you seeing the Doctor for today?' 'There's something wrong with my dick', he replied. The receptionist became irritated and said, 'You shouldn't come into a crowded waiting room and say things like that. ' 'Why not, you asked me what was wrong and I told you,' he said. The Rider’s Mag - Page 16

The Receptionist replied; 'Now you've caused some embarrassment in this room full of people. You should have said there is something wrong with your ear or something and discussed the problem further with the Doctor in private.' The man replied, 'You shouldn't ask people questions in a roomful of strangers, if the answer could embarrass anyone. The man walked out, waited several minutes, and then re-entered. The Receptionist smiled smugly and asked, 'Yes??' 'There's something wrong with my ear,' he stated. The Receptionist nodded approvingly and smiled, knowing he had taken her advice.. 'And what is wrong with your ear, Sir?' 'I can't piss out of it,' he replied. The waiting room erupted in laughter... ******************************** A woman decides to have a face lift for her 50th birthday. She spends $15,000 and looks sensational. On her way home, she stops at a news stand to buy a newspaper. Before leaving, she says to the clerk, ‘I hope you don’t mind my asking, but how old do you think I am?”. ‘About 32,’ is the reply.’ ‘Nope! I’m exactly 50,’ the woman says happily. A little while later she goes into McDonald’s and asks the counter girl the very same question. The girl replies, ‘I’d guess about 29.’ The woman replies with a big smile, ‘Nope, I’m 50.’ Now she’s feeling really good about herself. She stops at a candy shop on her way down the street. She goes up to the counter to get some mints and asks the assistant the same burning question. The clerk responds, ‘Oh, I’d say 30.’ Again she proudly responds, ‘I’m 50, but thank you!’ While waiting for the bus to go home, she asks an old man waiting next to her the same question. He replies, ‘Lady, I’m 78 and my eyesight is going. Although, when I was young there was a sure-fire way to tell how old a woman was. It sounds very forward, but it requires you to let me put my hands under your bra Then, and only then I can tell you EXACTLY how old you are.’ They wait in silence on the empty street until her curiosity gets the better of her. She finally blurts out, ‘What the hell, go ahead.’ He slips both of his hands under her blouse and begins to feel around very slowly and carefully. He bounces and weighs each breast and he gently pinches each nipple. He pushes her breasts together and rubs them against each other. After a couple of minutes of this, she says, ‘Okay, okay.....How old am I?’ He completes one last squeeze of her breasts, removes his hands, and says, ‘Madam, you are 50.’ Stunned and amazed, the woman says, ‘That was incredible, how could you tell?’ ‘I was behind you at McDonalds’. ******************************** Finishing up our work at a trade show in San Diego, my co-worker Maureen and I decided to go sightseeing across the border in Tijuana, Mexico. While there, we went shopping and bought a few pieces of clay kitchenware. As we crossed back into the United States, a customs official asked if we had anything of value to report. "Not really," Maureen replied, digging in her bag for the bean crock she had purchased. Everyone around us froze as she continued, "I only bought a little pot." ************ My sister didn't do as well on her driver's ed test as she'd hoped. It might have had something to do with how she completed this sentence: "When the ___ is dead, the car won't start." She wrote: "Driver." ************ A husband and his wife are having dinner when the husband begins to choke. Frantically, the wife calls out, "Is there a doctor in the house?" A man walks up to her and says, "Yes, I'm a doctor." The wife pleads with the doctor, "Please do something to help my loving husband!" The doctor walks over to the bar and grabs a soda and then brings it to the choking man. "How is a soda going to help my husband? I thought you said you were a doctor?" the wife asks. The doctor looks at her and says, "I am.... The Rider’s Mag - Page 17

by Dawn McIimoyle Another month gone. Another month coming. It is a cycle we are quite used to. Time passing. Then you start to wonder where did the time go? Was it used purposefully, or did you waste it? Sometimes hours and minutes just fly by and you think what did I get accomplished, if anything. Then the next questions is: Was the time I spent with people of quality or did I just exist. Am I just going through the motions or am I actually living. At times I have a huge disconnect with myself and my feelings and I feel like nothing I do is of value and I cannot understand my worth. Until recently I had no self-worth. I didn’t think I was worth the air I breathed. I apologized for existing and thought that if it was going to go bad, it was because of me. I didn’t feel I could do anything right and just didn’t want to be here anymore. I also had people around me that were very negative and keeping me in the downward spiral of negativity. Sometimes I wonder if they were placed in my life to see if I was up for the challenge. Would I self-destruct or would I finally find my worth and my value? Writing for The Rider’s Mag has been one of the best things to ever happen in my life and I am super grateful and honoured to be doing such. It has given me a reason to get out of my house and test myself to the extremes. It has given me an excuse to talk to people and become more extraverted. I am painfully shy but when I start to open up I can be the life of the party. I have been too scared to do this my whole life. If I was actually me, then people would see me, the real me however I often hide the true me because she was so suppressed as a child and doesn’t feel loveable however I then complain that nobody sees me. I should ask myself why I don’t want them to see me and what would it take to be seen. An incident that happen in the here and now that seems insignificant to others but can be detrimental to my sanity as it takes me to a place of feeling so small, so not important and then I turn little and my self-worth is non-existent. I am telling you all of this because I am growing, and it feels really good. I am finally learning, and things are making sense. I even had a vision of a tiny seed growing up through the ground, breaking through and becoming a beautiful tree. I’m sure it would have had to be a tree of knowledge. I had felt like I was doing very little and that I wouldn’t even have anything to write about this month but then I look at the things I do and although my day planner isn’t filled to the tits with appointments with important people or cool things to do like some of my friends, what I do is what I need to do. I make an appearance and I be me. I went to Kitchener to see my friend Carole, a fellow Veteran after a face-to-face meeting in Toronto to see Cheech and Chong live and what a blast. I didn’t get up close and personal with them or wait for the meet and greet because I had a long drive back home but spending time with her and doing something that made me laugh so hard I almost pissed my pants was very good for my Soul. It led to me purchasing tickets to another comedian show and getting to see one of my friends and meet some more amazing people. I attended the Greg Morton Show at Regent theatre in Oshawa, ON. Greg was a contestant on America’s Got Talent last year and was on his comedy tour. He is a comedian/impressionist and his publicist just happens to be a friend of mine. In October 2017 I appeared on Green Crush with Alan Park podcast to speak about medical marijuana and met the amazing Kim Sakamoto. Kim has continued to support me and all the things I do so I do the same. Last year I was supposed to meet Ed the Sock with Kim, but my PTSD kept me home and I still regret that because I really wanted to spend time with that Sock. He has no filter and says it like it is. Truthful and honest, just like I like it. I have been spending a lot of time in the chair at Inked Impressions Tattoos and Body Piercing in Port Perry with Rick Kemp getting more ink done. I met Rick last year when I contacted him about doing my Wings. I was so satisfied with the work Rick did and the collaboration of making the artwork come to life that I am not sure I would let anyone else mark my body with ink now. My Mer-Angel (Mermaid Angel) is now fully completed and I could not be happier. She is stunning and I am so grateful for Rick’s artistic abilities and the fact that he listens to me and in my mind, he cares, and I am his friend. October was full of birthdays and one of them was mine. HarleyG’s had a Birthday Bash for his birthday at the store and I attended briefly because I knew I was going to get to see Alfie from The Rider’s Mag who actually got me my job and put me in a World where I have an excuse to talk to people. The Rider’s Mag - Page 18

Had he not suggested I call Critter at the beginning of the summer I really don’t know where I would be. This has been a lifeline for me. I feel like I belong somewhere. Critter gave me a home and an outlet. An alternative to what I had been experiencing my whole life. He gave me a way out of the darkness. At the Birthday Bash, I got to see the birds from Ontario Falconry Centre “OFC” again and hold the Bald Eagle this time. I also held the Owl and what an amazing feeling. I have mixed feelings because I know that these birds should be free, but I will never forget the amazement of having one on my arm. Thanksgiving was a hard one this year as I am experiencing doing thing alone for the first time. I cooked a turkey, but my Sons had other plans as they have other lives outside me, and I knew this day would come. I spent one morning of that weekend writing a list of all the things I am thankful for and it even included all my exes who taught me what I will no longer accept. My Sons did manage to take me out for dinner for my birthday before they had to go to their workplaces for the week and I got to meet my youngest Son’s girlfriend for the first time. His biggest concern for me to meet her was for me to dress “normal.” I am guessing he didn’t want me to wear my mermaid skirt and angel wing shirt. He said we would slowly introduce her to the real “Dawn McIlmoyle” Yesterday was my birthday and I was dreading it. I didn’t want another year to come to an end and my birthday fills me with thoughts of my Mother’s passing which was just 4 days before my birthday, and I was present for. This was my first birthday alone. It was just me and Dutchess Von Dee when I woke up in the morning. I didn’t really have any plans and I guess that was what was supposed to happen because my day turned out to actually be the best birthday ever. It turned out that my friend comedian Ryan Dennee was bringing Hardcore Legend Mick Foley to a meet and greet at HarleyG’s and when I met him last year I gave him a scrapbook I had stayed up all night making so I really wanted to see him again. Not only did he remember me, Ryan knew it was my birthday and they invited me to hang out with them after the meet and greet. What I got to do was so exciting I will never forget. I went with the group of them so that Mick Foley could surprise Jake the Snake Roberts who was appearing at Yuk Yuk’s Comedy Club. Being included in that experience was the absolute best way to spend my birthday. Aside from the Heckler in the audience who was totally off-side talking about Mick’s fashion sense, it was a perfect evening. Earlier in the day my friend that I have grown close to took me for lunch and I started to see that life isn’t so bad alone. I do have friends and people who care about me. As much as I want people to SEE ME, I sometimes am blinded to the fact they do. I am still caught up in the hate, the negativity, the shit side of people saying degrading things and I know now if I keep believing the hate I will not survive. There are just some shitty hurt people out there that don’t care and will hurt you, not help you. Navigating those waters is not always easy but I learned that a Smooth Sea never made a Skilled Sailor. The Rider’s Mag - Page 19

November This astrology has been written in “Quin-trains” meaning there are five lines to the divination. The fifth line will reveal the answer to the other 4 lines. There are 13 twisted spokes in creation of my wheel I use instead of the common 12. Since this wheel is created this way, this allows the reader to approach the wheel in 2 ways. As each sign represents a spoke in the wheel, you can read either what your own spoke has to say or read what all the spokes have to say to share a visual to the whole picture. See how all the spokes complete your wheel. The 13th spoke is what I call the “Dath Spoke” It is the spoke that binds all other spokes together, so you can see exactly what wheel(s) you’re using for your ride. Consider it having extra rubber for extra mileage. Fall, The bike loves it, me...not so much. Just a reminder of what is on its way. As I sit here typing this I am going over last minute check lists to make sure all is ready for a trip south. Off to Daytona Beach and Bikertoberfest. The weather looks like it's going to cooperate in the 80's, and I should be back with a tan. This article will be a little diary of the trip. My bike is washed and waxed and ready to go. Now to get through the next 2 days without forgetting anything. It's been a pretty hectic week around here. Hopefully leaving on Thanksgiving long weekend to cross the border wasn't a dumb idea. (I have had a few) Crossed the border in Fort Erie, about 15 minutes to cross. Got over with one question, where are you going? ... Biketoberfest in Daytona......... oh, what’s that? I have had a lot of people say they are going there..... explained what it was...passport back in hand and on the way. Painless. The drive down was uneventful until Georgia, where a monsoon decided to show up, a lot of rain, which stopped abruptly just before the Florida border. Before the monsoon hit was deer alley. I must have counted about 20 of the suckers. One standing on the road, I just kept saying please don’t move, please don’t move. Thank god he stayed put. Then it was time for a nap, which turned into a 5 hour sleep. Arrived a little later than planned. Of course my bike got stuck unloading it as it’s slammed as low as it will go. The grade of the trailer ramp was pretty much as steep as it could be, but a bit of ungodly scraping noise and a wrestling match it was off and ready to roll. Now in need of a bit of down time, it was grocery shopping and chillax mode for the rest of the day.

Wednesday was a full day. Rode over to the Cabbage Patch and hung out for a bit. A rain cloud came along and dumped a bunch of water as it passed, no big deal it came and went quick. The Rider’s Mag - Page 28

Left the Patch and headed down Tomoka Farms Road to the swap meet at the flea market. It was the biggest swap meet I have ever seen. I could have walked around all day digging through stuff. Then passed the Speedway and Thunder Alley. Lots going on there and also bike racing on Saturday too. Had to do the ride down Main Street of course. Things were picking up pretty good. Missed all the great music the night before down there. Rode down A1A along the beach, then back for a steak and a sleep. Thursday the official start day of Bikertoberfest. Took a tour around the area and hit Iron Horse, and Beaver Bar etc.. it was getting pretty busy. Then rode to Destination Daytona, at Bruce Rossmeyer’s Harley, What a cluster fuck that was. Parking was limited and the walk was pretty far from any available parking spots. It was pretty busy. The entrance for bikes was also the entrance for the truck stop, which was also a pain in the ass. So, me being me, just blew by them all. Oh was someone waving at me to stop and let the trucks thru?? Ummm nope didn’t see that at all.... did a quick ride around and surveyed the situation and

decided riding the loop would be a lot more fun. Every time I ride the loop during an event there are photographers along the way that take your picture and you can go online and find it. All you have to do is remember the approximate time you passed..... well I can’t see my damn clock and for the life of me can never find the photos online. The loop ride was enjoyable as always, and I always enjoy the ride along the ocean along A1A. Headed back to Main Street and did the Main Street ride again, then found a place to park. Did the Main Street stroll and checked out bands and vendors etc... then decided to head to the wet t shirt contest..... Well, that I could have missed. I actually left thinking , hey my 50 something year old boobs are looking mighty fine now after seeing what I can never unsee. I may have left the area with my head held high and my back a little straighter hahaha. If any of you are on my Facebook I am sure you saw a few live videos of the adventure. It was a hot day, so what better way to cool down than to get back on the bike and get some wind happening. A1A along the ocean to Ponce Inlet, I’m now working up a thirst and getting a bit of a sunburn, so I stopped at Hidden Treasure Rum Bar and Grill. Had a few ice teas and a bite to eat while watching the pelicans, and hoping to see a dolphin go by. Last time I was there, I saw a few swim by. It’s a great spot to sit and watch the water. I usually stop at North Turn when on that route, as I love the patio, the beach and the breeze, but it looked pretty packed. Hidden Treasure is a pretty nice spot too. Rode around the area for a bit and back to grill a burger. Molly Hatchett and Big Engine were on stage that evening at the Dog House, holy crap it was packed. It will be interesting to see the numbers for this year’s event, as it seemed to be a whole lot bigger than previous years. There is so much going on its hard to decide what to do each day. Friday is the usual events that go on for the 4 days, but at 6pm Billy Lane is hosting the Sons of Speed Vintage Motorcycle Race. Stripped down pre 1925 v-twins. I am looking at the weather for this evening and it looks like a wee bit of rain in the forecast .... so off for a ride around and see what trouble I can find to get into.... David Allen Coe is on stage daily at the Iron Horse too, and I remembered to bring my Iron Horse mug.... free beer in my mug from 4 to 5. I’m not a beer drinker, but hey ....if it’s free and an endless supply for an hour I’m in. On a side note: If anyone is looking to come down to Daytona over the winter, Endless Summer RV park is a great spot if you can get in. Tent camping, trailer camping and they also have cottage rentals. Great pool area onsite and entertainment etc. The staff is awesome. www. endlesssummercampground.com Tell them Debbie sent you. (unless you are ignorant drunks who party all night and disturb folk’s, then leave me out of it). It's quiet and a great biker friendly park. It’s under new ownership and the new owners are terrific. Saturday brought a tornado warning for the area, and alot of rain early in the day. After a bit of a lazy morning and some breakfast, it was time to head to Titusville along US1 and check out Miracle City Harley. Live music, food, bikini bike wash, and Emilio Rivera signing autographs. Looked around for a bit then decided to head back to the Cabbage Patch and see what was going on after the rain had played havoc everywhere. Cacklebery Campground across from Cabbage Patch was closed down early in the day as the weather was an issue. Everyone in the park was fine but any new arrivals were turned away due to safety issues. Well, it was quite the wet muddy mess, but things were still rockin. Coleslaw wrestling was a little delayed, it nearly turned into cabbage soup wrestling. About 3pm, the sun was back out and all things Biketoberfest were back in full swing. Needed a bite to eat, so I headed to Hidden Treasure Tiki Bar in Rose Bay, always awesome food and a great view. The evening looked a bit iffy weather wise and Sunday was looking perfect, so I decided at about 6pm to call it a day and made plans to barbeque some chicken, get a shower and get some rest for a full day of Sunday riding and events. I am sure Main St Station will be packed The Rider’s Mag - Page 29

tomorrow with their bikini contest. Sunday was a great weather day, The sun was shining and it was nice and hot, just the way I like it. Headed down to A1A and decided to hit Main Street early and buy a few things. Walked around and checked out the vendors and bikes then walked down to the pier. Realized no breakfast makes you hungry ... so stopped at Cruisin Cafe for a bite, and watched the bikes go by. The weather was so nice i wanted to ride not walk around, off along A1A again. Headed towards the loop at Tomoka Farms. It was a nice ride along the ocean as usual. The sun was shining and the trees overhanging the road were a nice bit of shade. It was so hot I kept eyeing the water thinking about jumping in to cool off. There are a few roads that I have no clue where they go, well now I do. Cruised around hoping not to get too lost and decided to stop in at Destination Daytona at Rossmeyer’s Harley in Ormond Beach. Things seemed to be packing up and it was only about 2pm. Walked around a bit and checked things out, then decided to go to the Iron Horse. Always have my trusty Iron Horse mug usually, which means free draft beer between 4 and 5 pm during events. I’m not a big beer drinker but it was so hot all I wanted was a sweet tea (which they had run out of ugh) ok water will do. Well I was happy to see it came in a souvenir Iron Horse bottle, so that’s now on a shelf. Iron Horse was hopping. I was hoping to see David Allen Coe for his 4pm gig, but it was put back to 6pm. Didn’t want to hang out that long and I was hoping to make it over to the Beaver Bar, as I had missed their Sunday breakfast. The traffic was a cluster fuck, so instead I turned right and headed into Ormond by the sea, looking for some shade. I rode the river and ended up crossing the bridge back over to Main St. Dirty Harry’s was once again in full swing with a wet t shirt contest. Time to hydrate and watch the world go by. I found a great perch on a bar stool looking at the road. Things were pretty busy on Main St but everywhere else seemed to be winding down as it was the last day. As the sun started to set, I decided to head back and cook some dinner. Maybe check to see how badly I was burnt too. A full day of sun and I could feel my skin swearing at me. I also sat down to try to find the pics that were taken of me on my journeys... I had bought some bifocal sunglasses for riding at the Cabbage Patch a few days prior, so now I could look down and see exactly what time it was as I went by the photographers (this is exciting as I have never been able to see the friggin little clock on my dash). I found about 30 so far and will have a look for some more tomorrow. For years, I could never find my pics online (cause I could never see what freaking time it was). So all in all it was a great last day of Biketoberfest. I will be down here riding while everyone else is pulling out, and will head home in a few days. I plan to return in November, December and January...well, you get my drift. I’m not a fan of winter. Also, it’s my birthday in a few weeks and the best way to spend a birthday is with the grandkids. (they appreciate cake) so I have to make the trek back for that, and also the End of the Season Get Together at Knuckleheads Bar and Grill, November 9th from 3 to 9. Hope to see you there. Keep the shiny side up. The Rider’s Mag - Page 30

with Dingo Biketoberfest This year was the 17th Annual Biketoberfest and Ma Nature provided sunshine and warm….although some thought a little on the toasty side, weather. As usual, the turnout of bikes and people was at capacity, with even the car parking area filled up during some hours of this event. The vendor section had four long rows of vendors selling their wares. Welland County MC provided free camping for those participating and even the camping area was close to full even on the Friday night before. And, the entertainment was pretty much non-stop with great local bands playing. There was a show & shine going on during the day, unfortunately, I didn’t get the list of the winners. Speaking of winners, Barb Wagner was the Grand Prize winner of a new 2019 Harley StreetGlide. Congratulations Barb !! Congratulations also to Bruce & Suzanne Bissell, the Welland County MC members, and the volunteers that once again made this a successful event that raised $36,423.00 for Pathstone Mental Health. A job well done!! So, what else has been going on? Things kinda slow down come the end of September this way, the uncertain weather usually gets in the way of making long term plans for charity rides, and bike nights are generally week to week and definitely weather dependant. We have been known to have heavy wet snow dumps in late September, early October, and the temperature can be either balmy warm or downright freezing. Where am I going with this you may ask? Well, Sandra Kelba ( BRO, Port Colborne) had an idea and ran it past Angie and Mike Labreche (Regulators MC), and together they put together a ride in 3 short weeks to benefit two kids who recently lost their mother. Some of you may have heard about this tragedy ……mother trying to save her young son from drowning and losing her own life in the process. The call went out to the

Niagara area biker community…after all, to paraphrase Mike, “When there is a need, who are you going to call? “ The answer….Bikers!!!... of course!! And turn out they did…close to 200 bikes from all different clubs on a sunny Sunday morning, meeting at The S-Bend Restaurant. The two children, Brooklyn and Tatum, were there with their aunt and uncle to see the ride off, and get a few photos in, as was CHCH TV to cover the event. The ride, itself, had stops at Tons of Bike Gear, the BoatHouse in Chippawa, then on to Southsides Patio Bar and Grill in Fort Erie for the party with entertainment by local favorite Chico Sanchez as well as an open mike session. In total, I was told $7000 was raised on this special day. Exceptional work done by Sandra, Angie, Mike, the blockers, and to all who participated!! It was heartwarming to see smiles on those two children’s faces. All of you put a little sunshine back in their lives. The Rider’s Mag - Page 32

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention a benefit party the Saturday evening before the ride. Al Seuss, is one of the kindest, gentlest, human beings that I have the privilege of knowing other than the fact that he is a Dallas Cowboys fan and even worse, a Leafs fan lol!! Anyhow, Al is one of those people who is always there for others, no matter what, and his acts of kindness did not go unnoticed. Recently, Al was in a position that, through no fault on his part, he was unable to work. That prompted Lori, and the other members of NBS Riders ( Port Colborne) of which Al is also a member, to put together a benefit party for Al. The party started at 7 p.m. and I got there around 7:30, and the place (The Corps) was packed!! A fun night with a 50/50 draw, penny sale (Katherine didn’t win anything for once), great food, and, ugh, the Leafs actually won a game that night. I know Al doesn’t like the attention, but when you’ve done so much for others, it’s bound to happen when the tables are turned. MLHR guys, you did good!! Also on that Saturday, Motorcycle Country RC Niagara ( MCRC Niagara) held their Annual Pumpkin Collection Ride. The club does this for those families who may not be able to afford a Halloween pumpkin for their kids. Whoever came up with this idea is a genius in my book. There are people out there who just can’t afford some of the things most of us take for granted and it takes people like MCRC Niagara to look around and say “what can we do” to help those who may be in need of that little extra. Great job and thumbs up to the Brothers and Sisters of MCRC Niagara! How many of you take pictures of your ride? I don’t mean the usual pics at an event or someplace you’ve travelled to, but pictures of your ride, front, back, left and right sides, with or without aftermarket parts added. If you haven’t, I suggest you do so. I’m working on a story that will curl your riding boots and it all starts with a raccoon. Be sure to check next month’s edition of The Riders Mag. Don’t forget the Season End Get Together at Knuckleheads Bar and Grill, 6092 Main St., Niagara Falls on November 9th! Live entertainment starts at 6:00 pm till closing. There’s parking behind the bar as well as on the street. Looking forward to a good time!! Dez and I have convinced the Mag’s other staff that there is life south of Highway 7 lol!! Harley Brake and Clutch Fluids DOT 5 hydraulic brake and clutch fluid does not absorb water. Water absorption by other fluids such as DOT 4 used in current hydraulic brake and clutch units has caused HarleyDavidson safety recalls because of the lack of maintenance by some riders. Furthermore, DOT 5 is safe to use around painted motorcycle parts. So, why did H-D and other vehicle manufacturers move away from the use of DOT 5 fluid? Is it all about the boiling point of each fluid? If so, DOT 5 use would be a logical conclusion. Modern braking and clutching fluid pressure causes heat. In the world of physics, heat and pres-sure are the same thing since expanding heat will create pressure and increasing pressure will generate heat. Since DOT 5 does not absorb water from the atmosphere, this means its boiling point will remain relatively stable. Furthermore, the boiling point for DOT 5 is also higher than DOT 3 or DOT 4.But, it should not be used anymore with current braking and clutching systems. Any water that finds its way into a DOT 5 brake system will have a tendency to form pure water pockets. In the wrong circumstances, this will cause brake corrosion of vital transfer holes (valves) inside the system. The corrosion may par-tially or totally block these valves preventing or severely disrupting fluid transfers and thus effective hy-draulic action. In other words the brake or clutch may cease to function. I will further discuss the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of the three hydraulic fluids (DOT3, DOT 4, and DOT 5) used in Harley hydraulic brakes and clutches from 1958 to present day. Hydraulic brakes requiring DOT 3, DOT 5, and finally DOT 4 brake fluids depending on year, saw first in-troduction on the rear brake of the 1958 Big Twin Hydra Glide (Panhead). The front brake stayed with a cable operated, mechanical drum and dual brake shoes until 1972. The Sportster used a rear mechanical brake from its introduction in 1957 to 1978 before first use of a hydraulic disc brake in 1979. The XL began use of a hydraulic front disc brake in 1973. Hydraulic clutch use began in earnest on the Big Twin in 2013 with premium models although it was available sporadically on some earlier bikes. In my opinion and experience, none of the three brake/clutch fluids work perfectly. Each has a fault to a few faults. However, all three work pretty good in normal circumstances. DOT 3 and DOT4 are glycol-based fluids, while DOT5 is silicon-based. The glycol based brake flu-ids have a lower boiling temperature than the silicone based brake fluid. DOT 3 Dry (no water absorbed) boiling point is 2050 C (4010 F). DOT 3 Wet (with absorbed water) boiling point is 1400 C (2840 F). DOT 4 Dry (no water absorbed) boiling point is 2300 C (4460 F). DOT 4 Wet (with absorbed water) boiling point is 1550 C (3110 F). DOT 5 Dry (no water present) boiling point is 2600 C (5000 F). DOT 5 Wet (with 3% water present) boiling point is 1800 C (3560 F). So, why not use DOT 5 in a modern Harley? While having higher dry and wet boiling points, DOT 5 can aerate. Air compresses, oil does not. Aeration will cause a loss in clutching ability and is truly dan-gerous with ABS (anti-locking brake system) braking. DOT 3 fluid was only used on H-D hydraulic braking systems, never clutches. It is the best paint remover ever. One drop on a gas tank will lift, distort, and destroy the spillage contact area. Its primary use was with hydraulic drum brakes using brake shoes. It also had use on early disc brake models but was replaced with DOT 5 fluid in the mid 1970s. Bikers of the day loved DOT 5 fluid as it did not distort and destroy painted parts. Most riders did not think much about fluid effectiveness but they sure did care about their paint getting screwed up. I know this because I too, cared more about cosmetics than me-chanical reliability in the early days. A main difference between the three fluids is that DOT3 and DOT4 are hydroscopic, which means they absorb water. DOT5 brake/clutch fluid is not hydroscopic. Water absorption is a big deal as we have learned with hydraulic clutch recalls. Where does the water come from? Where there is air, there is wa-ter. The physics principle of condensation converts evaporated water in the air and liquifies it. This is the reason that hydraulic lines whether clutch or brake using DOT-4 brake/clutch fluid must be flushed every two years. Common sense dictates that if living in a damp, rainy climate, then flush systems sooner, like maybe every year. If living in arid climates, the two year limit may be extended a little but why take the chance? The moisture condensate in the brake fluid will now also corrode inside components including valves (small fluid transfer holes) inside the master cylinder. Symptoms of this malady are hard braking pull on the lever or the lever may simply go right to the handlebar. This is rather disconcerting in a panic stop. If using DOT 3 fluid, which would only be for early H-D hydraulic brakes, I recommend a fluid flush every year. Do not use DOT 3 fluid in hydraulic clutches. DOT 4 is a modified version of DOT 3 and is sometimes referred to as DOT 4 Heavy Duty relative to DOT 3 Standard. Since, both are glycol based, DOT 3 and DOT 4 can be mixed but why anyone would want to do this is beyond me. Do not take shortcuts with braking systems and to a lesser extent clutching units. The Rider’s Mag - Page 36

The exception is if switching from one to the other. In this case drain the master cylinder and lines of the fluid to be replaced, then add the new fluid. The residue of the old fluid will mix with the new one. Another point is that I can see the rationale for upgrading from DOT 3 to DOT 4 but not the other way around, which in my opinion would have no advantage. Never, ever mix the glycol based fluids with the silicone base DOT 5, which is synthetic (man made). Furthermore, as a rule of thumb, do not use DOT 5 with ABS (anti-locking brakes). Why? Com-pressible air in the system is the short answer. Manufacturers are mandated to put a blue dye into DOT 5 fluids to safely distinguish it from the glycol based fluids. It is imperative to consider the boiling point of each type of fluid before deciding on appropriate use. Hydraulic systems rely on an incompressible fluid to transmit force. Oils and other hydraulic fluids cannot be compressed while gases easily compress under pressure. A modern Harley gerotor oil pump as well as front and rear motorcycle shocks rely on the same principle as hydraulic brake/ clutch lines in that all depend on a fluid that will not and cannot compress. Consistent pressure cannot be exerted if a gas is present or created inside the closed loop (sealed) hydraulic components. If the brake fluid boils (becomes a gas) or engine oil incorporates a gas by mixing with engine air in turmoil, both will lose some to a lot of their ability to transmit force under pressure. This may partial-ly or completely disable the brakes or oil pump effectiveness. To make matters worse, the only time a system is likely to boil brake fluid is during a period of prolonged use, such a ride down a steep mountain or riding in congested traffic. However, boiling is not necessary to create gases from the fluid. The level of high heat can cause evaporation. The evaporate is usually from heated moisture but may be other gases also. Either way, a gas will compress, disrupting to preventing hydraulic action. Moisture (water) or its gaseous state may enter the system from carelessness or lack of regular maintenance. Air can simply enter the system when removing the filler cap, which is why manuals advise to remove caps when necessary for maintenance and to replace as quickly as is reasonably possible. Ditto for always keeping brake fluid con-tainers tightly closed. Therefore, gases may generate from internal heat or external sources. Air when cooled becomes the condensate water. Since DOT3 and DOT4 brake fluid is ascorbic and thus absorbs water, its boiling point will decrease. Either fluid, silently and invisibly absorbs water from the air. The reader can now see that none of the three brake fluids and the one clutch fluid is perfect. Each has its own problems. Therefore, maintenance of these systems is extremely important as exampled by the many hydraulic clutch recalls in recent years and ongoing brake system problems since 1958. Next month I will examine the best of all Harley carburetors, the Keihin CV, in use on Harley-Davidson from 1988-1989 to 2006. The CV also makes a pretty good performance carburetor competing with aftermarket offerings. It was also superior to the first Harley EFI (fuel injection) system Magneti-Marelli but not the later Delphi EFI systems. Donny Petersen www.donnypetersen.com

Hello again everyone! We are creeping up on that season where the bikes get parked and we end up with cabin fever for months on end. I managed to put on 6300 miles last month preparing for this season’s arrival. If you have been following along, I believe I left you on day one of my nineteen-day journey. Eleven states later, I managed to make it back home to tell you all about it. There are two states that aren’t worth mentioning, once I made my way through them, I found myself rolling through Colorado. This is a magical state filled with mountains, winding roads, and hot springs. Also, this is where my dad calls home. I made it to dad’s place in time for a late lunch on day two. The morning had been a four hundred mile ride straight

cafe with an amazing menu. Something about Colorado food, it always tastes better than anything anywhere else. I opted for their Avocado toast and a breakfast croissant sandwich. Splendid. A double shot of decaf espresso and I was on the road again.

west surrounded by open fields, now it was time to find some scenery and curves. Dad and I ate lunch and decided to roll south another ninety minutes down some excellent Colorado back roads. We found ourselves at a little pub enjoying a beer and catching up a bit. By the time we throttled back over the mountain, it was dark and I had put another 600+ miles on my Nine-T. Day 3 began early, possibly before the sun was up, there we sat sipping coffee. Dad was headed east for the day and I would be making my way southwest. I hadn’t taken the Nine-T off road yet and this was the day! The 30-40 degree temperatures had me rather chilly after an hour or two and I made a breakfast/coffee stop. I pulled into a small town and stumbled upon a corner

The fall colors were coming to life and the day was warming up. There is a mountain pass along my route with the perfect curves for motorcycling. I had perfect timing heading up and saw no other traffic, so I may have been exceeding the speed limits and recommendations a bit. Once at the summit, I decided it would be fun to video my decent. I placed my phone on the windshield and hit the record button then proceeded to roll my way down the mountain. I was traveling along at a good clip when I ended up behind The Rider’s Mag - Page 38

some slow-moving vehicles. Luckily the BMW has a fairly quick throttle response and I was able to sneak around the cars just before some tight curves with incredible views. I was getting excited to watch the “dashcam” video of this ride and feeling quite sassy with my motorcycle skills. By the time I reached the bottom, I was grinning ear to ear and super happy I hadn’t seen any red and blue lights in my mirror.

There I was, standing at the side of the road unstrapping my phone to see this epic ride on replay. I stopped the camera and hit the play button anticipating a thrilling and somewhat chilling video perspective of my speeding and leaning. However, what I saw was a five-minute video of my gas tank. I had my camera on the wrong view and it filmed absolutely nothing but exhaust sounds and a gas tank. Needless to say, I was more than disappointed. Ooops! I stood there just long enough to shake my head and giggle at myself. Just as I was hopping on the bike, I noticed a long line of cars coming down the hill behind me. I would now be following a lengthy list of Porches the rest of the way down this spectacular winding highway. Double whammy here, no video and now stuck in traffic for the next hour. At least it was a beautiful day to be on two wheels and due to the traffic I actually took the time to soak in the scenery. My gas light waited to shine until 190 miles had passed and I filled up at 216 miles, incredible fuel milage in the hills. I was now in Lake City and discovered a music festival full of people, food, wine, and beer. After a drink and a bit to eat, I was on my way out of town and off the pavement. Cinnamon Pass is a lovely 4x4 trail from Lake City to Silverton Colorado and I was stoked to see how my bike and I got along on the new terrain. A few small water crossings, some giant rocks, and a lot of gravel later, I was extremely happy with my ride. I stopped and hiked down to a waterfall for a bit and then rolled through a giant avalanche slide and into the little post-card town of Silverton. What a fantastic experience day 3 had brought. It is necessary when visiting Silverton to drink Jalapeno Margaritas at Rudy’s. I enjoyed a drink or two and found my way up the road to the Columbine Road House. Absolutely wonderful little historic western hotel with splendid views and lovely hosts. One of those places that you stay and never forget. Day 4 dawned and it was breakfast time at my favorite coffee house, The Coffee Bear. Giant breakfast burritos, chai tea, and great company. I didn’t have much of a plan for my day other than hanging around the mountains and finding a new hot spring. After accomplishing those two tasks, I decided to try another off-road adventure. I had never been over Ophir Pass and everyone insists it’s the easiest and most scenic route to get to Telluride. I turned down the wide gravel road and was in awe of the mountain views and fall colored leaves. Wow! I made my way up the pass and realized it was nothing more than

a gravel road to the summit. The other side of the pass, however, well...it kicked my ass! The terrain became full of large loose rocks and potholes as the road narrowed and became steeper. I managed to make it down the first leg of the switchback and then dropped my bike rounding the corner. No worries, I removed a pannier to lighten my load a little and picked the bike up. Ok, confidence was rattled after that little maneuver.

Next, I made my way down another leg of the decent and soon found myself rolling and sliding a bit out of control. I am not exactly sure how fast I was going or which rock it was that sent my back tire sideways. But, what I am sure of is that the ground hurts when you meet it after launching half over the handlebars and into a pile of rock. Yep, I crashed directly into the ground and there was no way I was picking my bike up this time. My arm swelled instantly, my knee and hip were radiating pain and there I was alone on the side of a mountain miles from anything. Ouch! And, Damn it!

To my delight, there were a few 4x4 enthusiasts coming down the mountain behind me and were happy to help a girl out. With a group effort, we stood the bike up and rolled it down to more level and less rocky surfaces. Everyone examined my arm and made sure I was ok to ride the rest of the way off the pass. It was quite a stretch of trail with several water crossings and potholes but I managed to find the highway. Ever ride off road without being able to stand up on the bike while your arm is turning various shades of colors and swelling like a balloon? I do not recommend it. I’ll fill you all in on the details of this next month, stay tuned!

The days are getting short and numbers of rides even shorter but Fall rides are just that more enjoyable because of it. Late September, the Ottawa Chapter of the Bondslaves MC, a Christian motorcycle club held their 3rd Annual Fall Unity Run. They were blessed with absolutely great weather! Somewhere in the area of 100 riders came out to participate and show support for BSMC! This is because nearly every event that took place over the riding season you could see at least a few of their members taking part. Some of the clubs that came out were the Last Disciples MC, Falcons MC, Burn Out Boys RC, GOC MC (Guardians of Children), Simple Men MC, ARM MC (Association of Recovering Motorcyclists), Canada Veterans, HAMC, and several other clubs! This included a member of the Bondslaves MC who rode in from Winnipeg! The Celtic Brotherhood, who, as in all previous rides, provided a complimentary free breakfast to promote brain injury awareness and brotherhood. Everyone enjoyed the ride and most of them came back for the “Walking Taco” dinner provided by the BSMC and hung around and socialized.

I had the opportunity, while walking around taking pictures, to chat with some of the people who have become friends over the years! Blair Gardiner, president of ARM MC, Eric MacGillis of the Burn Out Boys RC along with his daughter, Perry Montgomery of SMMC and his wife Geneane, Jim Poulin & Yves Brisbois of the Last Disciples MC, and last but not least Catfish aka Mike Chiviendacz of the Falcons MC.

There was one sad note to the day. Denise Nicholson, a member of the TCB support team had to drop her bike on the way home! Thankfully, because she was already coming to a stop, sustained only, a broken collarbone! This required surgery and the addition of some metal bits and other than a few bruises is otherwise, doing fine. Denise called to tell me where she was so we could come get her, I asked some of the BSMC if they would ride out to be with her while we got four wheels to transport her to the hospital! They were more than glad to do so. However, just as we were heading off with the van we received a call from Denise saying that one of their prospects had arrived on scene and would take her to the hospital. I want to personally thank those BSMC members for helping our sister out. We brought Denise’s bike home to her last Sunday. With the exceptions of some awesome staple scars which will provide her with stories to wow her grandchildren with, both her and motorcycle are doing well. The 1st Annual, Ride for Ross (Rural Ottawa Seniors

Services), that was to take place the following weekend, was completely rained out! The dozen or so brave souls who showed up had a great time making jokes under the canopy, fueled by strong hot coffee and lots of sugary treats. This was their first attempt at having a fund raiser motorcycle ride! Next year, with a better time slot and with the help of several others including myself, I suspect the 2nd Annual will be a much better, so keep an eye on the event calendars for 2020. The Rider’s Mag - Page 41

One of my favorite last rides of the season is always the Capital City Bikers Church Annual Fall Color Run! As in previous years, there was a more than decent turnout of riders and MC’s to participate and show support for the CCBC! They, hands down, are a pivotal hub in the Ottawa area motorcycle community! They host all kinds of different events, including their Annual Xmas Dinner, which I more than recommend! Xmas is always better with Bikers. Some of the clubs that participated were Last Disciples MC, Canadian Christian Riders MC, Boozefighters MC, Outlaws MC, the Jackpot Riders Club, a club from the Montreal area and along with a large number of independent riders made for a great day. Other familiar faces were Jim Poulin, Yves Brisbois, and we even had a surprise visit from founder of the 2804 Dice Run and truly a brother to TCB, Michel Dupuis! He came by to support and thank CCBC for their support in the Dice Run.

I want to give special mention to both Pastor Rob & Hillbilly for their immense contribution to the Ottawa and area motorcycle community! This is not only for many events they host, but for the Celebrations of Life they participate in and the weddings Pastor Rob performs! The men and women of the CCBC provide a sense of family with no strings attached and deserve recognition for their presence. I also want to thank all the members of The Celtic Brotherhood for working their tails off all season providing free breakfasts to other clubs rides! They are also participants in the efforts to promote brain injury awareness and remind all of us we are not only a biker community but a family as well. The Rider’s Mag - Page 42

I realize that many of you might wonder why I go out of my way to mention the names of people or clubs that participate or help out in some way in our biker community but that is exactly why I do it, we are a community and I believe that it is important to recognize those clubs or individuals who go that extra mile to make things better and maybe to encourage more of you to do the same because trust me even though it can tiring it is pretty amazing when you actually get to meet your fellow riders and get to know them. One other thing that I want all of my readers and supporters of The Riders Mag to know is; that there is over a half a million brain injury survivors in the province of Ontario alone! Many of them are bikers, but even if they weren’t, they are our family members, our friends, our neighbors and people we work with who need our support for they are dealing with the “Invisible Injury” so please contact your local brain injury association to see about helping them out whether by donating money or even better as a volunteer. If you are not sure who to contact then please email me at my address below and I will find out for you. If you would like any more information about events or rides that I mention in my column you can go on Facebook and go to “Motorcyco Beau’s Biker Events & Ride in Eastern Ontario and as always I urge you to support the events and rides that are created by bikers and clubs in your area because unlike slick organizations that run events the local riders and clubs will be the same people that will come and support yours. Please remember to spend your money with businesses such as those who advertise in The Riders Mag because they have proven themselves to be Biker Friendly and shown their support for our lifestyle so in turn they deserve our support and business back. If you have any issues that you think might be of interest to your fellow readers please reach out to me and let me know either by email or Facebook. If you have an event or ride or you are a business that deals with either motorcycles or the people who ride them you might like to advertize or even perhaps become a distributor of The Riders Mag, please contact me by email or phone. As always I want you please remember that we make our Motorcycle Communities stronger by making them better. email: theridersmag.beau@gmail. com Twitter..
