Hey out there! I hope you are all doing well and managing to pick out at least some decent riding time out of this dog’s breakfast that Ma Nature has served up for us thus far for our riding experience! My bikes aren’t on the road yet as I need some items for the Trike like tires and some minor tweaks and Petoonia may be a doubtful starter again this season as my current budget doesn’t have much budge in it! I will do the best I can with what I’ve got!

The Mag is now well on its way to holding its own thanks to the support of you loyal readers and advertisers who have stuck with us when the going got tough!

On a personal level, for me and mine, the challenges continue but I have a great crew around me and they have picked up the slack that I left and have had to work around me as my head isn’t entirely in the game right now. As I’m sure you can understand, I’ve been preoccupied with the current situation with Godzilla’s stroke, her progress, or lack of it, and the effects that it is having on my finances, time and energy! You don’t live with someone for over 50 years and not have what happens to them impact your life and your state of mind!

In regards to ‘Zilla specifically, we are not seeing much in the way of improvement in her mobility but her mind is sharp and her spirits good. Regrettably, as neither of us ever wanted to end up in such a place and all of the many conversations we had had together on the subject concluded with us vowing that we wouldn’t allow that to happen to the other. I have broken that promise and I have strong and very mixed emotions about my decision that I will be wrestling over for a long time to come! It now appears that a long-term health care facility is going to be her next stop. The team at the Hospital has ruled out the possibility of me looking after her at home, as I would be unable to provide the level of care that she is going to need, even with modifications to the home and purchasing equipment to carry it out and assistance from agencies like CCAC. Now, I will certainly have to get very creative in trying to meet and overcome these latest challenges in the adventure that is my life! I’m quite sure that production at Labatt’s had to be ramped up and that the fine folks at Captain Morgan’s are seeing a surge as well! I know it isn’t

a solution, but a crutch! Right now, I need a crutch!

I continue to expand our crew to provide more coverage and better representation to all areas of the province and the rest of the country! Our new girls Kim and Dawn are both working out well and they are proving themselves to be definite assets to the Mag for the present and into the future! They have been finding select locations in their areas that will carry The Riders Mag, as we would prefer distributors who appreciate The Riders Mag! They should regard our readers as consumers and the extra traffic that The Riders Mag can generate to their business should be recognised! We would, of course, like to sign them up in our directory of places that carry The Riders Mag in the “Where the Hell can I find The Riders Mag” section that is available in the back of each Mag both in print, online, and on our Website! For the last several months I have been travelling quite a bit as I re-establish delivery routes and deliver Mags!

I make my way out through London, Lucan, Strathroy, Chatham and Windsor areas! I’ve been staying over in Windsor and hooking up with our new guy “Cheyenne” in at Jakes Joint which is in the same plaza as the hotel that I stay in!

I have discovered that you don’t sit alone with Cheyenne in a public place, as he seemingly knows everybody and they know him and we generally have a full table as good people, both male and female drop by constantly! It makes for a good night as Ted regales us all with his incredible stories and I can drink much as I choose as it is only a short stagger to my room! I enjoy my stay and the company! The food at Jakes Joint is incredible and the servings are incredulous, far more than an old fart like myself can handle! Just to complete to the whole package, the bartenders are fantastic, fast, efficient and not hard on the eyes! It looks like I’ve found a home away from home!

This past month offered a new challenge as Godzilla had just had the stroke and was laid up in the Hospital.

The business, being a business and a small business that has undergone several major changes, challenges and setbacks over the past year or so it needed to be tended

to!

I had to get on the road and deliver The Mags as I had no one else to do it! I explained to ‘Zilla what I was doing and I wouldn’t be able to get in to see her for a couple of days and she was good with it! This run is normally a two-day excursion and simply, had to be done and I had additional stops that I wanted to make down through the Leamington area to re-establish The Mag with bars and businesses in the area, like the famed “Colchester Bar and Grill” in beautiful downtown Harrow!

The challenge now was my little dog “Rosebud” or “Bud”, as I call her, when she’s not in trouble. She is a good little dog but other than short trips to the vet and groomers has not been out much or exposed to much outside of the home! Her buddy since she first arrived at our home as a little pup had been “Captain” until he died earlier this year.

Now with ‘Zilla MIA, she’d had her fill of major changes, and being left alone for the first time in her life wasn’t even an option! I couldn’t find someone on short notice, to look after her so I decided to just give it a shot and hope for the best! I loaded her, a supply of food, water and food dishes along with my gear and overnight kit into the truck and headed off on her first official “Road trip”.

After she figured out that we were well out of range of the Vet’s office and the groomer, she settled down pretty well but was still a bit fidgety! I folded up my jacket and vest on the consul of my truck and she snuggled up, settled in and was now good for the long haul! I guess she was missing ‘Zilla as she had been off her food for a couple of days! She just turned her nose up at it. I left her food in the dish but she couldn’t be enticed into even giving it a second sniff!

I made a stop at a fast food place during the day and picked up an order of chicken nuggets, tenders, fingers, chunks or whatever term they use to describe their fried chicken strips and “Bud” discovered “Road trip Food!” and she was good with that!

By the time we got to Windsor and booked us into the room and after setting up Bud’s food and water dishes I was exhausted, hungry and in need of a beer or several and some of the fine food that they prepare and serve down at Jake’s Joint! I left Bud alone in the room figuring that she would just chill out and have another nap while I met up with Cheyenne and anyone else who showed up and relax awhile! Wishful thinking! I no sooner got my beer in my hand and my food order placed when my phone rang! It was the Hotel telling me that “Bud” was causing some problems and disturbing the other guests! I said I would head back and calm her down.

When I explained to the Bartender what my problem was and that I’d just take my meal back to the room she suggested that if the dog was a small and well behaved as I said it was, and it didn’t cause problems with other patrons in the bar that I could bring her in!

She was as good as gold, and just sat on my lap sharing in my chicken wings as well as the croutons and bacon bits from my Caesar salad! They told me I could bring her again any time I needed to! So, Bud is an official Road dog! She travelled well, shared some food that is sure to make the vet cringe, caused no major problems does well in bars! After a good night sleep, we headed off for day two! Hell, we even got to give Cheyenne his supply of Mags so he could do the other Windsor and area deliveries!

We headed down to Leamington and into Jose’s Bar and Grill for the fine folks down there and into Eerie Arts Tattoo shop. I would like to stay longer in the area but because I knew that I had a whole lot to deal with when I got home, made abbreviated stops and in some cases decided to leave some spots until next time.

However, I did make my way into Harrow and stopped in at the famed and fabled Colchester Bar and Grill! This was a real treat as I had heard so much about it and as it is well out from my usual stomping grounds had never been here before! As I pulled into the parking lot, I couldn’t help but notice a large and very well done, airbrushed picture of Carl, the Wizard on the side of one of the outbuildings! It was a fine tribute to a much loved and very well-respected man! Carl spoke highly of this place and the people who make it so great, often and from what I saw in my brief stay I can truly understand why! I am going to have to make my way down this way again, soon, and stay awhile! It would take hours to go over all the pictures that cover the walls and even from my limited vantage point during my short stay at the bar I recognized many friends in The Rider’s Mag - Page 9

those pictures! I guess I got a glimpse of what I have been missing! I will be back!

The riding season in the Windsor area kicks off before us in other parts of the province because they are special and by the time you read this, “Bike Nights”, “Cruise Nights” “Riders Nights” or whatever they choose to call them will already be in full swing throughout this area!

We headed back via Strathroy stopping in to see Dan at Easy Acres and on in to visit with Joe at Factory Products and check out the renovations that they are making! I stopped at Hogtown’s current location at 33656 Denfield Rd. in Lucan, where they have set up to provide the same excellent service that their customers always received at their shop on Main St. before the fire!

It was now time to wind our way back towards Newmarket and complete todays little road trip with a walk over to the Hospital to visit “Zilla!

The next day I took off to meet up with Kim and accompany her on a run up through Stayner, Wasaga Beach and into Collingwood to see old friends Paul and Wendy Thurston at Thursty’s Cycle. We combined our deliveries with a lunch stop at Mylar and Loretta’s in beautiful downtown Singhampton. I had never been there before so I had no idea that a restaurant of this calibre was out here in this sleepy little town! The food was awesome and Rosebud appreciated her chicken fingers!

We moved on into Port Elgin where we got to visit a while with Tiny and introduce him to Kim who would be heading up on that weekend to attend his World-Famous Fish Fry! It was now down to Allenford to Blackhorse Cycle, where again, I was taken a back by this classy, old school, motorcycle shop, the bikes and just the all around genuine feel of the place.

We moved on to Smiley and Company in Ripley and visited a while with two of the most sincere, down to earth, people you could hope to meet and checked out some of the projects that they have been working on. They are a very innovative couple who don’t put much stock in the phrase “That can’t be done!” I’ve seen some of the work that they do and some of the custom fit projects are absolutely incredible! They are anxiously awaiting the start of the riding season as their shop is absolutely crammed and a little more workspace is always helpful!

When I visit these places and meet all the great people in every area, I would like to hog all of these deliveries for myself so I could visit more often but the reality is, each area deserves its own representative who can deliver the Mags in a timely fashion, cover the events in those areas with more than a vague idea about who’s who and what they are and their fit in the motorcycle community in general but in those areas to be specific! Kim will do a great job and make a ton of friends doing it!

Next day it was back on the road, delivering to other areas and getting things ready to do the Show and Shine at Policaro’s Harley-Davidson in conjunction with the International Female Riders Day and the Guardians of the Children.

I climbed out of my nice warm bed where Rosebud still snuggled peacefully among the pillows covered up to her chin in the luscious folds of my fluffy Harley-Davidson bedspread. I opened the curtains and was not greeted by the stream of dazzling sunshine that I hoped to see! Damn! There was no sunshine at all! It was drab, dreary and very, very wet! Damn! We had yet again allowed ourselves to get sucked in by the evil weather prognosticators who had called for a nice day and delivered crap! Don’t be fooled by the smiling face and happy tones of those like Tom Brown!

Fake News! Fake weather! Does Donald Trump know about this shit? Where’s my damn twittering device? How do I tweet? Damn! I don’t have time to do any of that stuff! I have to do a Show and Shine! “I should have known better!”

I muttered as I readied myself for a day that was better suited to fishing for crab in the Bering Sea with those guys on the Deadliest Catch than a motorcycle event! Rosebud snuggled deeper into the blankets knowing she still had The Rider’s Mag - Page 10

sometime until I was finished getting ready and made the bed!

Rosebud was coming along again, intent on getting her full Roving Reporter Bodyguard and Faithful Companion Certification! She is an intelligent little dog and she had to know that she was better left at home all warm and comfy wherever in the house that she chose to make her bed but she let her exuberance and desire to accompany me wherever I go, win out over logic!

It a horrible day! It rained, it drizzled stuff that strongly

in the Motorcycle Community! I didn’t see any except for the bikes that the ladies from Guardians of Children rode in on! I guess we will get an update on how the ride went but I think it would be safe to assume that it was damp and cold and a challenge for the ladies!

We all knew from the get go, that this event was going to go in the books as a rain out from the start, but ever the exuberant promotional pitchman, Tony Colangelo accompanied by his right-hand lady, Jessica, was his evereffervescent self, out there getting rained on in front of cameras while pitching the event as if it were 80 degrees and sunny with blue skies and with hundreds of bikes lined up to get in! Wow! I wish I had his sprit and energy!

We did the best we could and took time to socialize with all who did come out and that included vendors.

Swap meet Sue and her man George had all of her stuff out but covered to protect it from the crap falling from the gloomy grey clouds overhead, as did Ron and other vendors, they just toughed it out! My pal Kumar, who has become a mainstay at all these events, with all of his fine leather goods and other motorcycle related stuff hung in ‘til the bitter end as well!

A food truck, selling everything and anything bacon,

had set up and instantly created a run on their special hot soup that everybody was raving about! Did I hear you ask, what kind of soup was this food truck specializing in bacon, selling Critter? Bacon Soup, you ninnies!

So, we huddled there, shivering in little conclaves that resembled the Hobo camps of yesteryear! Cold and wet, all with hands wrapped tightly around cups of hot bacon soup that were sending short-lived little wisps of steam into the air that would normally carry the fragrant aroma

resembled snow, and the relentless winds blew it all right in our faces, pretty much non-stop, throughout the day.

We were cold and wet but we set up anyway! There was to be a group of female riders scheduled to leave from this location at 9:30 AM sharp to go on the Female Ride to Fergus where they were to celebrate who and what they are and the strides that women riders have made The Rider’s Mag - Page 12

of the hot liquid to tease and tantalize the taste buds of those in the vicinity! But even these simple pleasures were to be denied to us on this day, as while those steamy mists did rise from the cups they were promptly and summarily washed out of existence by the constant, cold, drizzle!

Lee and Krista Wintercorn were out promoting the Guinness World record attempt at the largest simultaneous all female burnout that is to take place in Smiths Falls at World Famous, Rideau Rendezvous this summer on July 6th!

We shared one canopy rather than get two of them wet. My mind must really be going as I seem to remember calling Lee, Chris all day! Even as I did it, I was asking myself “what did you just call him?” If I did, Lee, please excuse me I’m old and you can expect stuff like that from us old codgers from time to time! If I didn’t call you Chris all day, I’m just having another senior’s moment so just forget I said anything!

As I mentioned, Little Rosebud was along with me once again and doing very well considering that she is not used to all the traffic, people, other dogs, loud motorcycles and all the rest that goes with it! I did buy a genuine HarleyDavidson warm vest/harness for her to wear! I hope that was the last time she has to wear it until winter!

Big Bill and his little dog “Willy G” both resplendent in matching outfits rode in on his Big Blue and White Harley having ridden down from Bluevale! Damn! Some guys will travel through all kinds of shit to get to a Show and Shine!

I knew we would be giving out at least one trophy today! Several other bikes came out just for the Hell of it and they registered their bikes to support the cause and to let us all know that we are in this shit together and we are not alone! We did give out trophies that will serve as bragging rights that we will go through all kinds of Hell for our friends and our community! It is the members of the motorcycle community who really put the Shine in Show and Shine! The weather doesn’t have to co-operate, it comes from the heart! Willy G and Bud did meet briefly and did get along!

All in all, despite the weather, it was a very good day as it shows that spirit shines through! Thanks to Tony Colangelo, Jessica and all the crew at Policaro Harley-Davidson in Oakville for your co-operation and the use of your amazing property! Thanks to The Guardians of the Children for all you do and for organizing the whole thing along with the crew from Policaro Harley-Davidson and to our own “Stitch” and her man George for your part in it all and it was no small part!

Fort Erie Swap Meet 2019

Wow! 36 years! That is some history and it has been a long story that needs to be told one day but I am not going to attempt it here and now as there are too many facets and nuances and other players who deserve mention! It will happen one day! The story of how the event came about, the work that went into it and what made it a great event is the story I wish to write! I will not slam or slander anyone or choose sides! Anything that survives for that long is a part of the history of motorcycling and it deserves to be recorded properly!

I knew for a while that Sean McCooey the creator, founder and main catalyst of this long running, very successful event, was in ill health! I knew that he could not withstand the rigors and all the crap of doing this event for much

longer as it would be the death of him!

Sean isn’t the type who does anything half heartedly! He commits himself, heart and soul and every fibre of his being goes into whatever he does! He was Mr. Promotion for years and he promoted his events with gusto and imagination and his mind had to be going a mile a minute, 24- 7, to come up with some of the stuff he did! He always did it with humour and an exuberance that was overwhelming to many of us who watched him over the years! He was a showman and did everything with flare and style!

That being said, I found out earlier this year that Sean had signed over the Fort Erie Swap Meet to BRO, Port Colborne for them to run as he had to step away!

We at the Mag worked with BRO through Ray and Pyper and did up ads and so on! I would run into them everywhere, as they promoted the Swap Meet and Pyper was absolutely amazing! Her high energy level I thought was a genuine asset to the Swap Meet! She could not compare to Sean as I think it would be near impossible for any one person or even a group of people to even come close to Sean’s energy and imagination and show the level of commitment that he put into this event! It would be like any local bar band no matter how good, or for that matter, The Rolling Stones, following AC/DC at a concert or the poor shmuck who had to follow Robin Williams or Jonathan Winters on to a stage!

That being said, we woke early and got ready to once again, venture out into the world of motorcycle wwap meets and see what this day held in store!

The weather showed a vast improvement over yesterdays shitshow! The sun was shining as we made our way out to the truck! Rosebud, is now quite keen on road trips and can’t wait to climb into the truck and take her rightful place on her perch or throne adorned by her newly acquired, colour co-ordinated, dog bed that fits perfectly on the centre consul of my F150 and further accessorized by her Harley-Davidson fleece towel! She is my little Princess and damned proud of it!

We picked up Kris and headed off to the wilds of Fort Erie or more specifically, Ridgetown! We arrived early and set up where we were instructed and proceeded to do what we do, we enjoy ourselves! We wander, we take pictures, we visit with absolutely everybody and anybody!

Not a bad job for a couple of old guys and a little dog!

Fred Hale and Family were out in fine form with all kinds of great items from their store, Strictly V Twin up in the wilds of Pefferlaw where bargains happen, the men are men and the women are proud of them!

I ran into Deb from Bling Your Things at her booth, and if Bling is your thing you should really check them out, as they are doing some absolutely amazing things with Bling!

I made my way around the whole show with Rosebud tight at my side ready to spring into full-on attack mode and demonstrate her worth as a guard dog on a splitsecond notice, if the need should arise! Good thing everybody seemed friendly enough and her fearsome side never had to be exposed as she is well aware of all the crap that Pitbulls are going through and doesn’t need any of that hassle and muzzles just don’t go with her spiffy bandana!

Our man in the Niagara area, “Dingo” came out to help and take pictures and such as did Bad Bob who had taken full advantage of the superb weather and rode his The Rider’s Mag - Page 14

Pride and Joy to the event! Our now old and retired ex publisher JR also came out to check things out and he rode in as well!

There were lots of great deals and there were a lot of items that changed hands during the course of the day!

Everything seemed to be going very well and we could see the exuberant Pyper as she looked after the bike teardown portion of the day! We had a great time and found The Fort Erie Swap Meet to still be well worth the drive to Ridgetown!

Paradice Riders on the Road Party

I was invited to head on down to the Clubhouse to attend this party along with BDR Doug and his lovely lady Flo and we all drove down with our pal Bronson!

It was my first time at their new digs and I was really impressed with the quality of the workmanship that went into this place!

Some clubs and some members aren’t all that comfortable around cameras so I left mine behind and it felt good to just sit and relax with friends and have a drink or two without even the worry about driving home afterwards! With all the crap that has been going on in my life recently and facing the realities as well as the uncertainty of what lies ahead this was just what I needed! A night off!

The place was full with great people many representing different Clubs from all across this province and other provinces who all came out to help this great club with such a long, storied and glorious history celebrate and welcome in another year ON THE ROAD! There was a great barbecue going on outside and they were churning out some awesome burgers, hotdogs, sausages and other fine fare!

I wandered upstairs for a while checking out the games of pool and shooting the shit with a bunch at the big table as more people showed up to party! I finally settled in at a table downstairs with BDR Doug and Flo along with a couple of other BDR Members, Big George and Smitty!

The tunes were fantastic the company was better, the night seemed to fly by and before I knew it I was heading home feeling a whole lot better! Thanks to all for having me out! L&R

Strictly V Twin Spring Swap Meet

It was a nice-looking day! Sunny, but none too warm!

Kris and I left Rosebud behind this time and rolled in fairly

early to find the driveway filling up quickly! We were directed around the back to where the Swap Meet was getting underway! Getting underway in Swap Meet lingo means it’s a time before all the customers arrive when every vendor checks out what every other vendor has in hopes of finding a treasure or rare find and perhaps make some deals ahead of opening time! What you may see at one booth might have been at another table previously

but more often than not, items that are found early are destined for personal projects or collections! We set up and wandered a bit, always on the lookout for good stuff! There was a guy there doing some truly amazing chainsaw carvings and he was transforming a log into a fantastic looking wizard right there!

I saw lots of collectables that I would have loved to have added to my personal collection of toy motorcycles and other whimsical stuff but my budget said, not today!

There were lots of things to check out and in the Swap Meet section but there were tons of great deals both in the store and out front as well! They drew a very good crowd and a glance at the driveway filled with cars trucks and lots of motorcycles, at any given time would attest to the fact that the event was a success! It could no way be described as huge but Fred and Family knows that you don’t have to be huge to be good! Given the choice between huge and good, I’ll settle for good any day and the Hale Family hit the mark again!

Everybody seemed to gravitate at least once to the one corner out back where they had free coffee and a great selection of cookies and other tasty home-made treats also, free! I may have indulged in one or two of those cookies!

I saw lots of familiar faces both in front of and behind the vendors tables and it is easy to get caught up in conversations and the day passes quickly!

The crowd started to diminish somewhat, and Kris and I still having stuff to accomplish that afternoon packed up and headed down the road!

The 5th Annual Fester’s Ride

June 22, 2019 in support of No Country for Motorcycle Clubs

the long history of Motorcycle Clubs or just Bikers for that matter, there has been a certain amount of friction between these groups and Law Enforcement! This friction has escalated over the years and Law Enforcement has been digging in, whilst sharpening their swords and increasing the weapons and tools in their arsenals in the form of over the top discriminatory laws and practices all under the guise of “The Public Good.”! Using legislation and the main stream media they have asserted their own prejudicial practices and agendas and created an atmosphere of hate, fear and misinformation on the public in their perception of bikers in their own politically motivated campaign! The have attached terms like Gangs and Criminal Organizations to Citizens of this Country without any due process or legal authority and continue to do so! They have engaged in hate mongering under the guise of Law Enforcement!

So, this “Just for Fun” event is now turning somewhat political, in that they are now asking for non-mandatory donations to a fund set up as “No Country for Motorcycle Clubs Campaign” to help meet the costs associated with the current and future legal battles of clubs and individuals (As anyone wearing support gear of any club will be deemed as supporters of Terrorist and Criminal Organizations!) who are standing up for their rights as Citizens and taxpayers!

Personally, I support the cause 100% and pledge the full support of The Riders Mag to not just this ride but anything that will challenge the efforts of those who choose to stigmatize and vilify people who ride motorcycles or choose to belong to a motorcycle club!

Fort Erie Swap Meet

5 Years ago, Fester, from the Paradice Riders MC, decided to just organize a fun event and invite as many of his Club Brothers, friends and supporters who wanted to come along, just to have a fun ride. A bunch of members from assorted other clubs and their friends and supporters decided that they would like to join in the fun too! They, in fact had so much fun that they decided that they would do it again next year and every year after that! Thus, was born, Fester’s Annual Ride! It has grown in popularity and continues to be fun!

As we had assisted with the event in previous years, and with some guidance from Shawn we put it all together in 3 months. Proceeds from the event will be going to a list of charitable organizations close to Shawn and our hearts, some of them being COPE Ft Erie, Port Cares, Veterans of US & CAN. Ozzys Garage Youth Program, Big Brothers & sisters and the BRO PC Family Christmas Program. Let’s hope the weather is just as nice next year. Tiny's Fish Fry Tiny's Motorcycle & ATV annual Fish Fry in support of the Southampton Rotary Club has become a tradition many locals, including lots of bikers out enjoying the Beautiful sunny weather this past May 4.

“The first one was in 2010,” said Tiny's owner, Chris Steingart (Tiny) who explained that he purchases the food as a fundraiser for the Southampton Rotary Club.

The Southampton Rotarians crew had a busy two hours as they cooked the Lake Huron perch and fresh cut fries for all those in attendance, that including many bikers out for a ride. They came to Tiny's in a steady stream over the two-hour lunch event, relaxing and enjoying a meal while being entertained by local blues duo and Memphis International Blues Challenge finalists, Shakey Trill.  “Shakey Trill” is an original, gutsy and raw acoustic blues/folk duo hailing from Saugeen Shores Ontario.

“Shakey” was a nickname given to guitarist/vocalist Mike MacDonald because of his extremely jittery hands.

Harmonica player and vocalist Tyler Pantlin can’t get enough of playing the “Trill”, it is the sound of two notes being played rapidly back and forth.

This past January, the duo participated at the 35th International Blues Challenge in Memphis Tennessee representing the Bruce County Blues Society. The challenge was a week-long event with performances up and down the famous Beale St. They were part of the solo/duo category which included 80 different acts from all around the world. Shakey Trill made it into the final top 8 spots which earned them the privilege to play at the historic Orpheum Theatre in Memphis.

Currently, the duo is heading to the studio to record their debut album. These four friends were so confident that the weekend before finals, they decided to visit some friends and have a big party. They had a great time but, after all the hearty partying, they slept all day Sunday and didn't make it back to Florida State until early Monday morning. Rather than taking the final then, they decided that after the final they would explain to their professor why they missed it. They said that they visited friends but on the way back they had a flat tire. As a result, they missed the final. The professor agreed they could make up the final the next day. The guys were excited and relieved. They studied that night for the exam.The next day the professor placed them in separate rooms and gave them a test booklet. They quickly answered the first problem worth 5 points. Cool, they thought!

Well it’s about god damn time that Mother Nature decided to get of the pot and give us some bloody riding weather! Mind you, it’s been few and far between for beautiful riding days (for those of us that work anyway). For the rest of you that don’t work, enjoy every minute of it!!!!!! Every…. Single…. day!

If you’ve followed my articles, you will remember that I mentioned that we get floods every spring.

Usually right up to house, even past the house, to our driveway. Sandbags are usually unhelpful, as people will go out in their boats to be nosy, and create wakes that go over any wall that we may build.

I will admit, it’s been slow to get into riding again. With the weather being what it has been, my being horribly sick, prepping the bikes around our work schedules and getting ready to GRADUATE, it’s been tough to find the time. (Yeah, I said it!!!! You catch it???). I AM A COLLEGE GRADUATE!!! At 40-something years old! I did miss out on all the college parties and binge drinking, (I can’t handle liquor very well, it’s quite entertaining if you ever get the chance to see it first hand,) but I did manage to have many a nights of studying til 2am, just trying to understand what I am doing. I’m an English major. I took advanced English courses through high school and wrote every chance I got. I was the goof that would look forward to when the class was assigned “writing lines” for bad behaviour. What is wrong with me you ask? Many a minds have tried to crack that nut, should you figure it out, please let Mike and Kate know

This year was no different. I was out in hip waders again, catching logs that floated away, or finding some of the strangest shit floating along the river. (Like a tool box weighted down by foam. I mean, why would you do that??)

I love writing! But it’s hard to find a career as an English major, this I have found out by friends of mine that were English majors in university. I have even contemplated writing a book. (Not a Dr. Seuss book and definitely not a Kama Sutra book, because honestly, who is THAT flexible??????) I’ve seen some of those kind of books.

Hell, if I could do that shit, what would I need a boyfriend for???? (kidding Mike) This time around, I signed up for a Small Business Bookkeeping degree. (I suck at math, literally cringe when asked a mathematical equation, so I was REALLY at a disadvantage.) Numbers and geography, (directions even) just forget it. I will look at you blankly like you just spoke a foreign language or showed me a third nipple.

I graduated!! With a 80% average. I’ll take it!!!!! I even get the day to be in a cap and gown. And yes, I AM wearing shit under the gown, keep it clean folks!!!! My son is graduating on the same day as me, from the same college. (He’s already graduated once before, but he’s finished another area of studies and damn it if he isn’t graduating for a second time!)

This year, Mike found something else outside that we’ve dealt with in the past year. A tree branch. Last year, while I was folding clothes, a large branch fell on our property, just missing the boat and dock. I’ll admit, I almost had to change my shorts cause it was loud like lightening. Well Mike found another branch that appears to be slowly falling down. There’s a nice big crack in the truck, so we’re now weighing whether we should just grab ahold of that branch and bring ‘er down. It’s my favourite tree, one of the main reasons I fell in love with the place. But safety is important and I’d rather it not happen unexpectedly.

So you see, lots of things seem to be happening, out of our control that interferes with riding.

But, we got new parts for the gazebo so that’s a plus. And, a good friend of Mike’s offered up a nice patio set for it, so when not riding, we have another great place to be.

Now for riding. I’ll be honest, I’ve not done nearly as much as I would have liked. I have seen many a friends riding, sending me pics, all arriving home safely, so that’s been good.

I’ve been sick, so, because I believe that you should be fully alert and healthy when you operate a motorcycle, I have had limited time to ride. I have chosen a time or two to ride bitch with Mike. Now, I do love when riding my own bike, but getting to ride on Mike’s bike gives me the opportunity to look around more, and grope Mike more.

Oh hey, it’s a two-way street, he gropes too! I’ve said it before, riding bitch gives you the opportunity to connect

a bit when it’s with your significant other. I’m not gonna tell you what we’ve done on his bike. I will say, if you have not, you should try it sometime. (Not with me, OR with Mike!!! I will throat punch) Grrrrrrrr.

Recently, a group of us decided to go out for a ride, but we changed it up a little. We gathered a group of us from way back when, when we first got together as friends. Of course, Kate and I came up with the idea, then mentioned it to our bud Terry, I then reached out to Diana, Kate contacted Kim and made sure she was coming out, Bonnie came and invited a new bud named Denise, and of course, the beaus.

It was refreshing, knowing that we’ve spent a lot of great days with this group, we knew how everybody rode, where they liked to ride, and we knew it was a great group with a wonderful sense of humour. We didn’t see Doug out there, being outlandish like I’ve known him to be for a good laugh, but that’s usually encouraged by a dear friend named Dan. Those two together and surely chaos will follow. There could be sexual innuendos that suddenly appear, publicly, where an outsider would quickly run away, but we all would laugh, sometimes take pictures (cause blackmail is everything lol) and we’d ride

on further. I can be trusted to be loud, somewhat obnoxious, but even I was subdued. I guess it’s the first real ride of the season, you kinda stand back, observe people, and just enjoy what you’ve missed all dreary winter.

I did get to try out my knew seat. How lucky is that, that it looks quite similar to the ‘gator seat!!

We’ve gone to a few events, no where near as much as Critter, but being sick really kept me back. With June around the corner, even the end of May was busier than I expected. I’m pumped with what’s coming in the next few weeks. We may even ride our bikes to my graduation!

The true story of the Chicken Gun. Too funny not to share!

Sometimes it does take a rocket scientist!

Scientists at NASA built a gun specifically to launch standard 4 pound dead chickens at the windshields of airliners, military jets and the space shuttle, all traveling at maximum velocity. The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.

British engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the British engineers.

WHEN THE GUN WAS FIRED, THE ENGINEERS STOOD SHOCKED AS THE CHICKEN HURLED OUT OF THE BARREL, CRASHED INTO THE SHATTERPROOF SHIELD, SMASHED IT TO SMITHEREENS, BLASTED THROUGH THE CONTROL CONSOLE, SNAPPED THE ENGINEER'S BACK-REST IN TWO, AND EMBEDDED ITSELF IN THE BACK WALL OF THE CABIN, LIKE AN ARROW SHOT FROM A BOW. Well “Three Wheelin with Wheels” is back by popular demand after taking a brief hiatus, I am glad to be back writing for the Riders Mag. Here is what I have covered so far since I’ve been back. Sorry for the lack of pictures for this column my camera went for a shit and I’m looking for a new one.

POLICARO HARLEY DAVIDSON SWAP MEET AND RIDERS MAG S&S Well my plans for this day changed at the last minute due to the weather as I was going to go and cover the Cover the Kids run in Niagara put on by BRO Niagara but when I looked out my window and saw the dreary crappy weather I decided to change it up and head out to Policaro Harley Davidson instead.

I went with my family so we headed out from Hamilton around 10 A.M., arriving at around 10:30. Like I have already mentioned due to the crappy weather the Show &Shine didn't go as planned but some brave souls made it out on their bikes for the day and participated in the somewhat diminished event.

Upon our arrival, I saw Sue, Critter and the Crew from the Guardians of the Children so I chatted with them for a bit before going around the property and checking out all the bikes (that were there) and the vendors that were set up for the day. After talking with this one and that one, I headed inside the dealership to check out all the bikes and other things for sale in the awesome new dealership.

When I went back outside I was sitting in the parking lot when Donna Graves pulled up right beside me so we chatted for a bit.

There was a food truck set up for all the hungry people and it was called Bacon Crazy and it is run by Randy Den Bak and his wife so I stopped by and got some of their chicken wing soup that everyone was talking about and it was delicious!

I headed back into the dealership and talked with the General Manager, Tony for a bit before moving on, The Show & Shine and swap meet ended early, as the weather wasn't cooperating so the trophies were handed out to whoever was there and entered the show and shine! The vendors started to pack up and everyone said their goodbyes and headed for home. I am looking forward to next year and hopefully the weather is much better.

FORT ERIE SWAP MEET This was a better looking day that what we had been experiencing lately , so I met up with my Mom, Marc and Al Brennan and we headed to the Ridgeway arena for the 36th annual Fort Erie Swap Meet. While I was waiting for the group to arrive I talked with Larry Belak for a bit as he was waiting for his group to arrive also.

We left the Tim Hortons at Hwy 20 and Mud Street around 9 A.M. And took Highway 3 into Ridgeway and arrived at the arena around 11:30 and the parking lot was filling up with bikes of every make and model.

The swap meet has been taken over by BRO Niagara as Sean has had some health problems and has had to step back for a bit. There were plenty of vendors selling everything from parts to clothing and jewellery and everything in between. I talked with this one and that one as I made my way around the show.

There was a decent size club presence this year as the Hells Angels MC, Bacchus MC, Genuine White Boys MC, Regulators MC and others were there and I was representing Disciple Christian MC, it was good to see and talk with you all.

I ran into Vern and his wife so I had lunch with them and Tina and Terry. I also ran into Jay Bick and his lovely Queen so we chatted for a bit. The show was starting to wind down so I headed back to Hamilton around 3 or so. See you all next year.

RED DEVILS MC HAMMERTOWN ON THE ROAD RIDE & PARTY My day started at 6:30 A.M. waking up to a beautiful day for a ride! I met up with one of my club bros, David, before the ride as he had to go to Service Ontario to get a few things straightened out on his new ride! so we did that and headed back to my place to wait for one our other club Brothers, Pins to arrive before heading down to the CH for the start of the ride.

We made it to the CH just in time for the ride to head out so we all lined up in order and headed out on a ride through the city with a stop at the Devils Punch Bowl before heading to the Hells Angels CH. There were a few mishaps along the way but everyone made it back safe to the after party. We stayed for about an hour and talked with this one and that one before saying our goodbyes and heading for home. Thanks for an awesome ride guys see you all soon.

One last thing before I sign off until next issue. My crew, the Redemption Crew of Disciple Christian Motorcycle Club are having two Biker Church’s this summer. I'll call it The Line and it hides, lurking in the grey matter between our ears and the fun begins when we step on it. Do you clumsily trip and fall (?) or manage to deftly take a step back and survive to ride on. Maybe, because you practice and you have the feel, you can stay upright and tentatively touch a few toes over the line and into the unknown.

Let me take you there, let me take you over the precipice. You struggle through the corner and slide back behind the wind screen. You raise your eyes, trying to judge the straight and look to go faster. The bike feels off as you twist the throttle and the front goes light, skimming the pavement but something is wrong, skittish.

A moment of time eats up the pavement as you realize the problem and it's you. Moving forward lets you relax on the controls and as things settle the bars give a slight wag as weight returns to the front, the world is right again.

A little more and you control everything.

A little more and between the horizon and your mind the world slows and your path through it becomes effortless.

A little more and the roar falls silent.

A little more and..…

Instantly the corner is upon you and reality jumps to warp speed. All your precise actions mutate from the serene to panic and caresses turn to stabs at the controls. Perception that was complete an instant before tunnels into streaking colors and bizarre new sensations and just like that, you see and know nothing.

Stepped on, your line jumps from the shadows and with teeth bared, it’s ready for the kill. Sublime under the chaos of chattering forks and a lashing chain lies the realization that you just crossed your line and what happens next determines your fate.

So, how do we save ourselves and I won’t entertain that you have not experienced it because we all have. You and I have simply learned to shorten that frozen moment between surviving and a crash using practice and experience. Granted, when mastered it seems non-existent but if we honestly examine ourselves there remains that instant of, something. Not hesitation but that tick of time as we combine the horrific consequences we all know are possible with our course of action to prevent it. In that moment, the slippery paint of our Line gives a wiggle as we mesh horror with delight.

There is a mantra I have on the top of my fuel tank and it gets read every time I reach for the ignition. Look, lean and believe. The three words that will save us but the first one is the key to everything. If you manage to Look then the rest will happen as your subconscious takes control and if you trust in this, then that first step becomes easier.

Look has two parts, especially for the less experienced. First, you have to look away from your first destination because that’s a very bad place where you definitely do not want to go. This is the crucible, that moment when you step on your line and if you can’t look away then a crash is inevitable.

The second look is our universal motto, you go where you look and in the instance of a botched corner you need to instantly tear your mind and eyes away from the bad and look through the corner. No matter how impossible making it may seem, LOOK and instinct will release the brakes and apply the perfect counter-steer push to achieve the insanely correct amount of LEAN required. Try your best to not freak out as you lead with your head and upper body to carve through the turn, at which point you will BELIEVE. I can not stress enough the mental scream it will take to ‘Look' but if you make it, if you overpower the Lines paralysis, stop a few meters away from your buddies. Far enough that hand gestures will seem appropriate because your vocabulary will be limited to gibberish and as you realize that leather nicely contains bodily fluids (you are wearing proper gear, right?), flash your mates a quick thumbs up. If you can’t release the death grip on the bars then a nod of the helmet will work. That will be no problem, just convert the shaking into an up and down motion.

Now, quickly before they catch on, check that the bike is in first gear and channel all available resources to the control of your hands and feet. Check for first gear again and then proceed with your impressively smooth getaway, like you didn’t just about die. Do not linger because the town crazy is about to show up and he’ll be raving half formed obscenities like a lunatic and if that happens well, the jig is up.

Go! Now, before you discover that it is you who is the town looney, go before the freak show begins or your friends will forever look at you differently.

Look. Lean. Believe.

Three words that are actually one smooth action and the more you experience it, the more it will become seamless. Look and it will happen. Lean and believe in your tires and bike, believe in you. Look to save yourself.

By David Rusk on1wheel.dr@gmail.com If I think about it too hard, I'll be geared up and crouched behind the wind screen of my RC51/SP1, imagining that famous mountain course blurring past in the afternoon light. “David(!), your being silly. Get off that thing, your scaring the cats!” That'd be my wife shouting because the bike is in our living room.

The Isle of Mann TT or Tourist Trophy is hands down, the most prestigious race (s) in the motorcycling world and definitely the most dangerous. I will get into the details in my feature report but for now, lets cover the lead in to this year’s event.

Practice begins May 25 and runs every other day until the following Friday and racing starts Saturday with superbikes and the first sidecar race and continues the skip a day schedule. The final racing on Friday June 7 hosts sidecars in the morning and the senior TT mid-afternoon and I have an IOM press/photographer pass for this day, which will be one for the history books.

Two past Champions return to the island road course after harrowing accidents, to throw down against past winners and hungry rookies alike. The biggest news is the return of John “McPint" McGuinness, with 23 wins at the TT. A terrible crash at the 2017 Northwest 200 in Ireland saw him off line for most of the 2018 season including the TT, where all he could manage was a few parade laps. Honda admits that recovered data from the Fireblades damaged ECM confirmed McGuinness’s claim of an unexpected throttle blip entering the fast Primrose hill section, resulting in the crash and a broken back, 3 ribs and both the tibia and fibula of his right leg. Fellow Honda mounted Guy Martin caught a false neutral entering Dorans bend at 190 kph and went straight on, hitting the curb and crashing. He was not shy about voicing safety concerns regarding the SP2’s electronics. John’s leg was so bad that internal fixation wasn’t an option and he was fitted with an external cage. A medieval torture device really, meant to repeatedly stretch the bone apart letting new growth fill the gap and essentially create new leg bone. John expounds during an interview. “Sort of a kick in the nuts, if you will" and “With the cage on, I grew my leg 50 mil. That was horrendous, it was horrible.” He returns to the Sneafell mountain with the Norton team, astride the V4 SG8 Superbike and the new 650cc parallel twin Superlight machine.

Ian Hutchinson makes a return after his own terrible experiences. With 30 major operations and over 50 hours on the table, Ian has suffered his worst in the 2010 TT. “I looked down and saw bones sticking out the back of my leathers and my leg just dangling down.”

Ian's foot was dead and resisting the surgeon’s push for amputation, he ended up in a Taylor Spatial Frame, just like Mcguiness and has been in recovery ever since. This year he will race with an ankle fused to a newly grown tibia bone and a Fireblade modified to right foot gear selection and thumb rear brake. Oh, and two legs that don’t match, can’t forget that because his knees are in different places.

Since his 2010 crash Hutchie has re-broken the same leg twice with the latest at the 2017 TT. With over 1200 excruciating days in the Cage having his leg slowly stretched (280 mm's) and fighting out of an opium painkiller haze, Ian is anxious to improve on his 16 podiums and race the clock once more. Aussie David Johnson joins Ian at Honda racing and the updated CBR-SP2.

Peter Hickman remains at BMW on the all new S1000RR with Smiths Racing and thinks ZX10R mounted Dean Harrison will be his biggest concern. Local hero Conner Cummins will race both a 1000 ‘blade and a 600 under the long time Paget's Honda team.

Micheal Dunlop is signed to Tyco BMW again where he managed a hat trick at the 2018 TT and became the third winningest rider behind McGuinness and his Uncle Joey, who's legacy proudly tells of 26 wins. Micheal set a lap record last year of 130.324 mph but the 2019 Beemer is a brand-new machine and hopefully it gets sorted before entering the full-on insanity that is the TT. With his father, brother and uncle all lost to road racing, perhaps Micheal is the strongest of the strong. During practice for the 2008 NW 200 a seized 250cc engine took his father and yet unbelievably a few days later, Micheal stood on the top podium and cried. Ten years later at the Skerries 100 in Dublin, brother William died during practice after sitting out the IOM to comfort his partner through a difficult pregnancy. Ever since Micheal has been a madman, driven to win and it is hard to fathom what he will be thinking as the starter taps his shoulder this year at the TT. Davey Todd, the standout newcomer last year with a lap of 128.379 mph that set the 23-year-old as the second fastest rookie ever (!) will be on another new S1000RR this year.

My trip to the Island was originally and still is the tail end to a greater gift to my wife, a tour of England and its history. Her dream to stand and to touch where Kings and Queens roamed is coming true for her (and me). That said, to see the IOMTT is a dream for me and with our international press credentials, IOM press/photographer passes and amazing accommodations only 50 meters from the paddock (!), I hope to get a “behind the curtain” story and photos.

I have only set aside 3 days on the Island due to the price gouging during the races and the aforementioned dreams of a deserving wife. Seriously though, if your considering traveling to the TT, it is mandatory to book at least one year in advance, especially the ferry. But before you start inquiring about the costs, I'd recommend self medicating because five months out, a room for 2 nights on a golf course (all that we could find) was £1500 each. That’s almost $6000 Canadian for two nights so throw caution into the wind and adopt the play now, pay later scheme. Until Bikelife came through with the pass's and reserved for reporter accommodations, Lisa and I were “glamping" on a soccer field (!) close to Douglas. Glamping, as in a tent. Party central I'm sure and 25 years ago I would've liked that but now, well now I’m pretty sure the unmuffled race bikes would literally explode my hungover head.

I am getting press releases from the race officials and any important updates will be posted here. Now, I'm off to hone my skills with a camera and try to remain calm as the trip edges closer.

UPDATE The latest news reports that John McGuinness's Norton SG8 V4 is 200cc over the Senior and Superbike displacement limit and the North West 200 organizers have contacted both Norton and John. As things stand right now, the big Norton 1200cc is disqualified from the “Triangle “course in Ireland and possibly the Isle of Mann TT also! Both sides are striving to reach a solution.

A school in Tennessee is facing criticism for separating students with bad grades from students with good grades at lunch. That's crazy! You don't use grades to separate kids. Everyone knows that kids should be separated by clothes, looks, and how much money their parents make.

I'm not the easiest guy in the world to get along with. So when our anniversary rolled around, I wanted my wife to know how much I appreciated her tolerating me for the past 20 years. I ordered flowers and told the florist to enclose a card that read, 'Thanks for putting up with me so long.'

When my wife got the delivery, she called me at work. "Just where do you think you're going?" she asked.

"What do you mean?" I said.

She read the card aloud as the florist had written it: "Thanks for putting up with me.

So long." ************ A frog telephones a psychic and is told, "You are going to meet a beautiful young girl who will want to know everything about you."

The frog says, "This is great! Will I meet her at a party, or what?"

"No," says the psychic. "Next semester in her biology class." ************ Man: "Be honest, baby... How am I as a lover?"

Woman: "Honey, I would definitely say that you're warm."

Man: "Really?"

"Logic?" Larry says. "What's that?"

The dean says, "I'll give you an example. Do you own a weed eater?"

"Yeah."

"Then logically speaking, because you own a weed eater, I think that you would have a yard."

"That's true, I do have a yard."

"I'm not done," the dean says. "Because you have a yard, I think logically that you would have a house."

"Yes, I do have a house."

"And because you have a house, I think that you might logically have a family."

"Yep, I have a family alright."

"I'm not done yet.. Because you have a family, then logically you must have a wife.

And because you have a wife, then logic tells me you must be a heterosexual."

"I am a heterosexual! That's amazing, you were able to find out all of that because I have a weed eater."

Excited to take the class now, Larry shakes the Dean's hand and leaves to go meet Doug at the bar. He tells Doug about his classes, how he is signed up for Math, English, History, and Logic.

"Logic?" Doug says, "What's that?"

Larry says, "I'll give you an example. Do you have a weed eater?"

"Nope," replies Doug.

"Yer a homo, ain't ya?" ************ Two friends meet in the street. The one man looked rather forlorn and down in the mouth. The other man asked, "Hey, how come you look like the whole world caved in?"

David Pretty aka Rowdy

May 28, 1946 ~ March 28, 2019 Early on in his biker life, Rowdy was a member of Abate (Toronto). Later, he pursued his clubber ambitions and achieved full-patch status as a member of the Zombies M.C. Rowdy served the biker community as an Independent member, as well as the volunteer ‘Swag Guy’, of the Ontario Confederation of Motorcycle Clubs & Independents.

Rowdy will also be remembered for his presence at several Ontario motorcycle shows and events where he and Donna enthusiastically distributed information about the OCC&I and its work towards ending biker discrimination.

It is with great sadness and bittersweet gratitude that he is fondly remembered by the executive, and the membership of the OCC&I, for his donation of his precious free time in furthering our cause.

Rowdy is deeply missed by his life partner, Donna Weatherall and her children and the members of his immediate family.

July 29, 1923 - March 10, 2019 Harry was born in Ridgeville, Ontario July 29, 1923.He served his country with pride during WWII as a dispatch rider delivering messages that were too sensitive or top secret to be sent via telegraph or telephone.

He chronicled those experiences in his book The Dispatch Rider, selling over 4,000 copies. The profit he donated to various charities over the years. He was active and influential with NSD for many years.

Harry worked most of his life in the transportation industry; he was also a businessman, writer, poet, sculptor, gourmet cook, Citizenship Court official greeter, memory project speaker, peace activist, and very proud Canadian.

"Al," she said, "If the world is 25,000 miles around and eggs are sixty cents a dozen, how old am I? "Thirty-four," Al answered unhesitatingly.

"Oh, there's nothing to it," Al said. "My big sister is seventeen and she's only half-crazy." ************ Police in South Carolina charged a substitute teacher last week for allegedly being drunk while in class.

Students realized she was drunk after she kept referring to lunch period as 'Miller time.' ************ A young man applied for a job at a new factory being built in a nearby town.

He entered the main office, where the receptionist directed him down the hall to an office where he was to be interviewed by the Personnel Officer.

After several minutes of describing and explaining all about the new factory, the Personnel Officer told the young man, "We need individuals who are totally responsible."

The young man grinned and responded: "Well, I surely qualify.

Everywhere I've worked, when something went wrong, I was always responsible!" ************ My wife asked me, "When you're on a boys only trip away, do you think about me?"

Apparently "Only to stop myself from cumming too quickly" wasn't the right answer. ************ A wife asked her husband, "Honey, could you please run to the store and get a carton of milk, and if they have eggs, get a dozen."

A while later the husband returned with a case of quart milk cartons.

Staring incredulously at the 12-pack case of milk, his wife asked, "Why the hell did you buy so much milk?"

“And, One More Thing !! “ It’s almost like Mother Nature is pissed at us for some reason…. leaves us with a nice warm sunny day, then comes roaring back with a vengeance with cold, and rain…and even that white stuff !! And so it’s been, here in the Banana Belt, where normally the spring rides are usually blessed with warm sunny days, even summer like, but not this year. And so it went for the first two big rides here in Niagara.

April 27th dawned cloudy and cold for Welland County MC’s 41st Annual Poker Run, BBQ, and Dance ( aka PokiBarbie-Dan). Normally, this event draws a big crowd of riders since it is the first poker run in this area for the new season. I decided that it was just too cold for me (I swear I saw sleet in the morning), but nevertheless, decided to take the truck over to the club house and see what was going on. There were about 15 bikes in the parking lot with those hardy souls gulping coffee inside. I’ve attended this event for many years and usually it is almost t-shirt weather, but everyone was bundled up for the cold. Talked with a few of WCMC members, took a few pics, and decided to come back for the BBQ later. As it was, I got tied up with things at home and made it back towards the end of the BBQ. Was not surprised to see the parking lot full of 4 wheeled vehicles and the same 15 – 20 bikes that were there in the morning. Glad to see that many came out for the steak BBQ (bring your own cutlery), the place was packed! Regulators MC took home the honors of having the highest club participation this year Congratulations!!

Well, it can’t be possible that we have crappy weather two weeks in a row, can it ? Kept checking the forecast all week up to Friday, and Weather Heather said it wouldn’t rain on Saturday! Great! BRO Niagara’s 36th Annual Cover the Kids ride was set to go May 4th. For those who wonder who Weather Heather is, she is a meteorologist for a local Buffalo TV station. Over the years I’ve come to depend on the weather forecasts out of Buffalo since we are close to, and our weather here is affected by Lake Erie conditions, the same as Buffalo is. Anyway, Weather Heather is usually right dead on with her forecasts, and it wasn’t supposed to rain here! Got geared up and ready to go. My riding buddy then informed me that it was a bit too chilly for her so she wasn’t going….no problem !! Stepped outside figuring I’d get the “Old Girl” out of the garage and go fuel up and surprise!! It was raining!! UGH!! Decided to wait it out, but it was a drizzle off and on for the most part of the day. Fortunately for BRO Niagara, they had a turnout of bikes numbering around 120, which is half of the usual number of participants that normally support this charity

ride. Also, they were forced to change the staging area, normally at Lakeside Park, Port Dalhousie, because of ongoing construction in that area. Hats off to those who participated!

Next up was the Fort Erie Swap Meet on Sunday. Naturally, just because I was to be inside most of the day, it was sunny and beautiful out !! Met up with Critter and Kris inside setting up the table for the Riders Mag. Now, the swap meet was scheduled to open the doors at 10 a.m. , and the lineup of people waiting to get in was amazing to say the least !! Once they were in, the place was packed ! There were even outside vendors selling their wares and parts. The “other” room was also full with vendors and clubs participating. Took a stroll around to get some pics and talked with a few vendors. Found a high school chum, Bruce Bissell outside selling tickets on the 2019 Harley Street Glide and promoting Biketoberfest. They were all happy with how organized the event was . This was the first year that BRO Port Colborne took over the swap meet and I have to say they did a bang up job with it. a successful first year!! Bonus, things slowed down, and Critter and Kris had had a long day coming down early in the morning from Newmarket, so we packed up for the day. I got to go for a ride, primarily to scrub in a new rear tire on the Old Girl!

This past weekend, I took a trip up to Clare’s Cycle and Sports for the Yamaha Demo Rides.

Another cloudy, kinda chilly day, but there were many there taking the opportunity to test drive various Yamaha models.

Of course, the Lovely Lisa was all over the place getting things and riders organized. From there, it was off to Smithville for Desiree’s Ride kickoff fund raiser.

I got there early, and there were quite a few people who got there ahead of me. Spoke to the organizers of the event and a few people from other clubs who were there to support this worthy charity. Watch the “What’s Shakin” section of the Mag to see when a Desiree’s Ride event is coming to a town near you.

That about wraps it up for this month ! The end of May signals the start of many charity rides and bike nights in this area. If you see someone with a camera and “Rider's Mag” back patch at your event, that would be me. Be sure to stop by and have a chat. I’ll be getting out to as many events as possible this summer. One more thing….I’d like to thank my friend and buddy, Katherine, for the use of her camera while the hunt was on for the charger for the other one. I could get used to the ”good” one very easily! 1998 to 2017 Evolution and Twin Cam Clutch: Part II Last month I broke the Twin Cam clutch into groupings by year and model. This month I will break them down in a simpler way. Most Twin Cams, especially earlier years have a mechanical clutch that uses a flat-convex/ concave diaphragm spring to lock the fiber and steel clutch plates together when the clutch is engaged (lever is out/bike in gear). These clutches also use a mechanical cable that the rider operates via the handlebar clutch lever.

Mechanical clutches are adjustable and must maintain adjustment via regular servicing.

Some of the later Twin Cam models especially 2013 to 2017 CVO Screamin’ Eagle models and the 2015 to 2016 FLHTCL (Low) abandon the diaphragm spring for 3 heavy but smaller coil springs and a hydraulically actuated clutch. The premium bikes get this first with a view of all models transitioning from mechanical to hydraulic.The rider still operates the clutch lever but fluid replaces the cable.

Hydraulic clutches are mostly non-adjustable and theoretically require less servicing. Yes, this is the way it was supposed to go but it quite has not worked out this way!

From a performance and efficiency perspective, the increased number of plates used in the Twin Cam wet clutch provides greater clutch surface contact, transferring through a higher percentage of the horsepower and torque to the rear wheel.

When the rider pulls in the clutch lever, the inner clutch cable extends, which pulls a ramp-ball bearing system inside the transmission right side cover. A whole lotta pushing now happens. The ramp and balls ride up on each other becoming thicker, which pushes the clutch pushrods that are in the center of the transmission mainshaft. On the other side of the bike, the clutch pushrods pushes the clutch diaphragm spring which, releases pressure on the clutch plates thus disengaging the clutch.

With the bike in gear, the rider lets out the clutch lever. This allows the clutch pressure plate to depress the clutch diaphragm spring to engage the 9-clutch plate fibers (37932-98) and 8-steels (37913-98) sitting inside the clutch hub inside the left side primary chaincase. The center adjusting screw (37090-98A) locked by its jam nut (H-D 7848W) doubles as a clutch pushrod extending into the transmission mainshaft. It butts against the clutch release pushrod (37092-06), that runs back through the main shaft center, which in turn butts against the clutch rod assembly (37069-90), and its fragile clutch throwout bearing (37312-75) in the right side transmission end cover. Earlier Big Twins and Sportsters as well as later hydraulic clutches use a bunch of coiled springs for pressure clamping the clutch pressure plate against the alternating fiber and steel clutch plates. Early Ironhead XL’s used 6-springs, later The Rider’s Mag - Page 50

Ironheads used two, one inside the other, while the Shovelhead used ten, and now hydraulic clutches use three.

A diaphragm spring is a flat piece of sprung steel that rises (convex) towards its center. Place a straightedge across the face of the compressed diaphragm spring.

Insert a feeler gauge between the convex or concave, whichever the case may be and measure the space. This measurement must be less than .010” (.28 mm).

Reduced clutch cable effort follows the design change in the 2006 Dyna Glides enabling a 10% reduction for Softails and 7% for FLHT touring models There is also a new clutch interlock switch specifically designed for new-rider safety and something us getup-and-go, experienced riders have mechanically been doing forever. Many of us leave the bike in first gear when stopped. We turn the ignition on, pull in the clutch lever to engage the clutch and press the starter button and off we go. This interlock button switch activates via the clutch lever position. It locates in the clutch-lever handlebar control. It is just behind an appendage of the clutch lever itself beside the clutchcable attachment pin to the handlebar control piece.

The switch will verify if the bike is in neutral or not before permitting starting. If in neutral, the starter will function when pushing the e-start button in. If not in neutral, the bike will not start until pulling in the clutch lever thus engaging the clutch.

H-D recommends that you check your clutch adjustment every 5,000 miles (8000 kilometers). I leave my clutch alone unless there are symptoms like slipping or dragging. If a rider is hard on the clutch, it will need adjustment sooner, if not probably later.

However, it is extremely important to check the fluid level on a regular basis, especially if noticing a leak or weeping from the primary chaincase gasket. Harley recommends either FORMULA+ TRANSMISSION AND PRIMARY CHAINCASE LUBRICANT or SCREAMIN' EAGLE SYN3 FULL SYNTHETIC MOTORCYCLE LUBRICANT 20W50. I personally do not like using the same oil in the transmission, primary and engine. Therefore, I only use the 20W50 synthetic oil in the engine. In my opinion, Harley-Davidson primary chaincase lubricant is 10W40 automotive oil with a red dye to easily distinguish it from engine oil.

Do not overfill the primary chaincase with oil.

Overfilling can cause clutch drag with consequential rough transmission gear engagement and disengagement. This last point is an interesting one since the clutch is referred to as a wet clutch. A little more oil should not hurt. Well, yes it does because the purpose of the oil is not to lubricate the clutch plates but to act as a coolant to remove clutch plate heat.

The dry fill specification (34 ounces/1.0 liter) means that the chaincase cover was removed during service allowing more oil to drain out. The wet fill specification (30 ounces/0.9 liter) is for when the old oil was drained through the drain plug with no chaincase cover removal. These specifications are approximate.

The accurate way is to stand the bike upright and fill the primary chaincase through the derby cover until the oil reaches the outer diameter of the clutch pressure plate.

Tools required for clutch adjustment easier are a T-27 Torx wrench for the clutch derby screws, 7/32” Allen wrench, and a 1/2” plus 9/16” wrenches. A torque wrench (measuring in-lbs) is desirable. Some years use slightly differing wrench sizes.

Perform the clutch adjustment with the motorcycle at room temperature. Clearance at the adjuster screw increases as temperature increases. If adjustment is made with a hot powertrain, clearance at the pushrod bearing is prone to be insufficient. Clutch slippage might be the result. Disconnect the main fuse or ground cable. Trust me, this will protect your fingers from a potentially crushing moment. Stand your bike upright, not leaning on the side stand. Remove the 5 clutch derby Torx screws and the derby cover from primary chaincase. Discard the derby seal ring and replace with a new one during reassembly.

Add free play to clutch cable by sliding the rubber boot off the cable adjuster. Loosen the jamnut (locking nut) and back away from the cable adjuster. Turn the adjuster to produce a lots of freeplay at hand lever.

Inside the derby inspection hole, loosen the lock nut on the Allen center clutch adjuster screw. Turn adjuster screw inward (clockwise) until it lightly seats as a starting point. Now, back it out one-half to one full turn. While holding adjuster screw with the Allen wrench, tighten the locknut to 72 in/lbs to 120 in/bs (6 ft/lbs to ft/lbs), or in metric 8.1 Nm to 13.6 Nm (Newton meters). This is one place a torque wrench is awkward to impossible. I tighten tightly using my little finger.

Squeeze the clutch lever to maximum limit three times to ensure the release mechanism is set.

Turn the clutch cable adjuster until any slack is eliminated at hand lever as a starting point for lever free play (1/16” to 1/8”). Now, turn the cable adjuster to obtain free play.

Hold the adjuster with your 1/2” wrench and tighten the 9/16” locking jamnut to 120 in-lbs, which translates to 10 ft/lbs (13.6 Nm). Again, I use my little finger. Cover cable adjuster mechanism with its dust rubber.

Install the new derby rubber (some models use a sophisticated gasket). Put the top derby Torx screw in loosely first. Then install the others. Tighten in a cross hatch pattern to avoid derby warpage.

Many Harley riders would like to see this system remain as opposed to the hydraulic clutch.

Next month, I will examine all things hydraulic clutching including some recalls.

Next is a 1998 and later clutch shell and sprocket (37708-98) showing its 36-tooth primary chain sprocket. The 1990 to 1993 clutch shell (37707-90) sprockets are 37-teeth while 1994 to 1997 (37707-94) clutch sprockets are 36-teeth.

Middle right is a single 1998 and later friction plate; nine plates are required in the assembly (37932-98). Next, is a steel clutch plate (37913-98) of which, eight are required to intersperse with the friction plates.

Bottom right, is the 1998 and later clutch diaphragm spring (37871-98A). Its convex-shaped spring steel will lock the fiber (friction) and steel plates together to transfer torque from the engine into the transmission.

To the left is a clutch pushrod (37088-90) that sits inside the hollow transmission main shaft connecting on one end with the shown pushrod clutch end with oil singer (37069-90) that locates inside the right side transmission end cover. It connects with the clutch mechanism on the left side of the transmission (not shown). Above, the pictured oil slinger helps splash lubricate the fragile clutch pushrod release bearing (37312-75) and mating thrust washers (37313-80) on either side pictured to the left. This assembly sits on the end of the clutch pushrod end in front of the oil slinger; it is held by a retaining ring (HD-11096) shown below the bearing and thrust washers.

The 1987-to-present clutch release bearing assembly (37312-75, bearing; 37313-80 x 2, mating thrust washers) buttresses against the clutch throwout bearing assembly shown directly below (inner ramp H-D 25452-87A, outer ramp H-D 25453-87, and three ball bearings HD-8873).An assembled throwout bearing is shown inside the clutch release cover (37105- 87A, chrome).

Above the clutch release cover is a smooth steel clutch plate (37913-90) used from 1990 to 1997. Six are used in a clutch assembly interspersed with the 8-friction plates. The friction plate (37911-90) fiber material is made from paper. Paper clutch plates, which connote fragility and wear proneness, are actually quite the opposite ably withstanding severe duty.

In the center of the clutch plates is the clutch hub nut (37496-90), known in Harleyese as nut, main shaft. Do not use a torque gun on the left-hand thread clutch hub nut unless calibrated correctly. It is better to use a torque wrench to achieve the correct specification. It is very easy to damage the clutch hub/nut. The reason for a left-hand thread is to prevent the rotational movement of the clutch hub from loosening the clutch hub nut. Instead, the rotational force will be a tightening one.

Hi there everyone, I hope your summer is off to a kickass start! Not much beats motorcycle season and it is upon us. I believe I left you, fine folks, somewhere around Santa Rosalia Mexico last month. What a long strange trip it’s been since then. Actually, it has been quite an epic adventure.

Somehow, the return trip through Baja Mexico was even better than the maiden voyage south. We rolled our dirt bikes out of our hotel room early in the morning and began weaving our way north. The first night we ended up back at a hotel we had already been to and enjoyed more great food and company. As our luck would have it, a Baja motorcycle tour guide was staying there as well. He recommended we backtrack a bit in the morning and go find the El Arco cave paintings.

After going over the maps, away we went back the way we had come and then down a long gravel road. Soon, the gravel turned to sand and a bit of rock and we were somewhere thirty miles into the desert. Gigantic cactus and rock formations all around, then a short bit of single track to a dead end cul-de-sac. We parked the bikes and took off on foot up a hillside to a huge open cave filled with 12,000-year-old paintings. There were humans, deer, and fish all painted in red and black and depicting what seemed

to be an offering to the gods or a sacrifice of some kind.

Wow. Just wow.

The sand road appeared to go on forever and if we took the right path we should end up the Bay of San Francisquito.

Eighty-five desert miles later we arrived at the water. There were old shacks lining the beach and a “restaurant” on site along with about five other humans. What a beautiful secluded place this was, the bright blue sea and miles of

sandy beach were just what we needed after a long days ride. Our host, Leonel, kept us fed and supplied with all of the beverages we could ask for.

After a night in a shack on the beach, we headed north to the Bay of Las Angeles. This was another hundred and five miles of rough rock and sand riding. But, the scenery was incredible and our dinner was even better. Costa Del Sol has the corner of the market in Bay of LA and we met some other moto travelers to chat with for the night. A couple from Alberta rolled in on Harleys and had just been to Cabo and back. Another couple in a van pulled up and shared their fresh oysters with the crowd and we all shared our Baja stories.

Morning came before we knew it, we rolled up the highway in search of our single track road that had been an excellent accidental discovery on our way down. About thirty miles farther than we remembered, there it was! The two of us headed off into the desert yet again, the track

was filled with the biggest cactus in Baja and the desert flowers were in bloom. A few rocky hills to climb and spectacular views for miles, this place is magic… and we have no idea where it all leads!

We found ourselves back on the highway after a few hours and then off on another side road.

This one began as a wide easy gravel trail and we followed a few pickup trucks. That section didn’t last long. Next thing we knew, the road narrowed, then became full of huge rocks and whoops. After

that adventurous section, we found a palm tree forest and riverbed flowing with water. And, a huge natural hot spring! Truly a paradise on earth and the weather could not have been better.

Once up out of the valley, we were surrounded by mountains of every color and on a section of the Baja 1000 race course! We had no idea where we were and the GPS didn’t show us on any road, but it honestly didn’t matter. What an adventure day this turned out to be. Eventually, we found our way to familiar roads and back to our favorite hotel, Alfonsina’s. The shrimp burritos were just as amazing the second time and the sea creatures along the beach were equally as impressive.

A group on adventure bikes rolled in and made fast friends. This group was around twenty guys on a mapped tour of Baja led by GPS Kevin. Another night in Baja on a beach sharing bike stories with fellow riders from all over the continent. Not a bad way to end a trip, 1700 off road miles and a million memories!

If you ever get the chance to take a motorcycle down the Baja peninsula...JUST DO IT! But, I’d highly recommend a dual sport type machine. The roads in Mexico have weathered a few too many storms and are not exactly smooth sailing for street machines.

For years in the Ottawa area motorcycle community the Capital City Bikers Church Swap Meet was the unofficial beginning of riding season. It was also one of the last swap meets in Eastern Ontario region until Fall. Much of it’s success was due to the fact that it provided an

opportunity for many of the local riders to get together socially for the first time since the year before. Last year the Bikers Church cancelled their event and it left a large void in our community.

There was a new annual swap meet that took place on the grounds of the Greely Legion that was hosted by the Bondslaves MC. Their president, Scott “Church” Towaij called the BSMC Mega Swap. It was everything they promised and more, including lots of swap and vendors, some that came in from Toronto to participate.

Scott, who happens to be a musician himself brought in two excellent cover bands to entertain everyone at the event, one being an AC/DC tribute band called

“Great Scott” and if you are a fan of AC/DC you weren’t disappointed! The other group that performed was “Mothership” who are a Led Zeppelin tribute band and once again the audience was not disappointed. The event just about completely filled the large hall inside the legion

and didn’t do too bad a job outside either! While there had been some rain during the night, by about 11:00 am the tarmac outside the building was filled with motorcycles, vendors and event information booths, including a 20’ x20’ pavilion tent BSMC

had rented for the occasion surrounded the asphalt lot by the front entrance.

We chose to take our chances and set up outside along with Michel Dupuis, Claude Brunet & the lovely Raquel Thibeault who came to promote their 2804 Dice Run in The Rider’s Mag - Page 55

Casselman just east of Ottawa on May 26th. The amount of swap for sale was impressive for a first-time event, with tables both inside and out. There were motorcycles for sale in a special area outside.

Inside there were many familiar faces including Geneane & Perry Montgomery of GP Laserworks out of Cornwall who were just back from wintering in the great state of Kansas.

That is where Geneane originally comes from! They were demonstrating their ability to laser etch words and pictures on to just about any surface from wood, leather and metal including personal items like knifes and jewelry.

Some of the members of the Burn Out Boys had a table set up promoting their upcoming 17th Annual Ride and Party that took place on May 19th and in keeping with tradition they threw one hell of a bash and lots of burnouts. A lot of the Ottawa and area motorcycle clubs like Simple Men MC. and ARM MC (association of recovering motorcyclists), the Ruffians MC, Falcons MC, Red Devils Mc and HAMC who participate as vendors or customers as well as show of support to all the Bondslaves MC as their club is very active in supporting the rides and events hosted by other area clubs. Like all swap meets, I bumped into the usual group of builders and enthusiasts such as Cindy & Scott Johnston, who are the promoters for the popular V8 Swap Meet, also held at the Greely Legion.

When I had breakfast in the legion’s dining hall I found myself seated among other old scoundrels such as Al Carmichael and Merlin and several other hot rod builders who didn’t let eating breakfast get in the way of wheeling and dealing motorcycles and cars! That just adds to the enjoyment of a good swap meet, because there is something entertaining about listening to all the haggling over prices going on all around you.

For a long time I thought that the art of actually building motorcycles was disappearing and was being replaced by people who only add on accessories, I am pleased to see a new generation of young builders coming up and while their interests seem to be less about building sleek custom choppers that our generation were focused on, this next generation seems more about building Bobbers, and in place of layers of custom paint they prefer the minimalist look with clear coat over bare metal or shiny mufflers covered in wrap! There is a similar trend in the new hot rod builder too and strangely, I find it appealing, but its just not for me, but you can appreciate something without needing to follow suit.

During the afternoon Thor, aka Tom Allain and I got to chat and he informed me that both he and the lovely Nathalie Lacasse were moving out to the west coast! A lot of people besides myself are going to be saddened by their departure, I am truly happy for both of them to have the opportunity to move somewhere with better weather and new beginnings, and I wish nothing but the very best.

Dick Budge came by several times to chat, who as usual was wandering around taking what I am sure were excellent pictures of all the people and things that were going on!

Now that he is retired, Dick does his best to get to as many motorcycle and/or military events as possible to chronicle them in his photographs.

I mentioned earlier that the Capital City Bikers Church cancelled their swap meet. Imagine how surprised I was to get a phone call from Pastor Rob McKee a couple of months ago telling me that on May 5th Bikers Church had decided to kick off the riding season in style by asking everyone to come and join them for an afternoon of BBQ, bikes, blues and boogie as part of their blessing of the bikes.

They were able to convince their neighbors and the city to close off two blocks by the church and made it motorcycles only! Within that area and the grounds of the church they had a show & shine, burnout pit, vendors and a free pulled pork dinner for the first 300 bikers to register. It was an awesome time with the streets lined with motorcycles and the sounds of live music provided

by Blues & Company while down the way, riders getting their motorcycles calibrated on the portable dyno-machine that was available and throughout the afternoon! We saw many of the same faces we had seen the day before.

There were a few vendors but then this was really more a social event but Cowboy aka Alain Bussieres and the lovely Sue Adams who had also been at the Mega-Swap the day before! Capital City Bikers Church Blessing of the Bikes and Social was a success and they are making in an annual event.

When all is said and done the Ottawa and area motorcycle community are truly lucky to have a new swap meet, which I am sure over the years “Church” aka Scott will see to it that it gets better! Add to that, the Blessings of the Bikes hosted by the Capital City Bikers Church it appears that the first weekend in May is going to be a winner.

The last weekend in May, I will be participating in the 2804 Dice Run in support of Casselman’s army cadet corps and as I often point out there aren’t enough communities and towns showing support for the young men and women interested in a career in Canada’s military. I will be telling you all about how it went in next month’s column unless you are one of those riders who make the trip to participate. Free breakfast will be served by members of The Celtic Brotherhood promoting brain injury & PTSD awareness! There will be a full demonstration of their Busted Bucket Challenge which last year was a huge hit with the cadets who remain on the grounds while the bikers are out on the ride! This year I am looking forward to additional events added to the after-ride festivities and rest assured, you will hear all about it.

Please remember The Annual Ride for Autism Ottawa founded by Dave and Noella Kuhnle, hosted by members of The Celtic Brotherhood is moving to June 22nd. TCB’s Awareness Ride for Brain Injury will be taking place on June 15th and their 1st Annual Hotcakes Ham & Hogs Fathers Days Breakfast for Bikers and everyone on June The Rider’s Mag - Page 57

16th. Members of other area clubs come out to help as well so that Bikers and their families and friends celebrate Fathers Day. Please remember that if the weather doesn’t co-operate there is plenty of space for breakfast inside the Greely Legion.

One other thing that I want to ask all of the readers and supporters of The Riders Mag, there are over half a million Brain Injury Survivors in the province of Ontario alone!

Many of them are bikers but even if they weren’t, they are our family members, our friends, our neighbors and people we work with! They need your support for the “Invisible” Injury so please contact your local Brain Injury Association and help out whether by donating or in some other way.
