Spring is coming! Spring is coming! I keep hearing all about it! I shift my gaze from the whiteness of this page on my computer monitor to the World on the other side of my studio window. I hope to see sunshine and cheery spring flowers breaking through the frozen earth and basking in the warm sunlight, Robins bob, bob, bobbing along on my lawns, the odd motorcycle (Other than one of those electric e bikes!), some exposed skin longing for the tanning rays of the sun to turn it tawny and other sure signs that Winter has finally passed and warm days are just days away! Instead, I see the same bleak, drab and dreary scene that I’ve grown so weary of! Sure, there has been some changes as there was a recent partial thaw that gave us some hope, but only reduced the piles of snow and ice just enough to expose the little deposits that my dogs had made over the winter! Not totally exposed to enable the cleanup and disposal of said piles, but enough to be a constant reminder that you have an unpleasant chore to do at some point in the near future! It’s sort of like a nag from Mother Nature! As if she isn’t annoying enough as it is, at times! So, I turn my attention back to the task at hand so I don’t get more nagging from “The Beast” as she wants to get this Mag completed and off to the printer ASAP. On a personal note, I get asked all the time about how this injury or that ailment is coming along partially out of concern for my well being and partially to compare note as they are going through the same crap and hope that one of us has come up with a magic cure! If I came up with a magic cure I would share it here! My shoulders are still screwed, my knees are still screwed my heart is still pumping and I’m on the right side of the grass! So, I will say “So far, so good!” and the adventure continues! To any of you who have met me or spent any amount of time with me over the past 10 to 15 years (Maybe longer as I forget when it actually started happening!) you may have noticed my head twitching! This is an involuntary action and I can’t do anything to stop it! It has been disconcerting to myself and to many friends over the years! It is really annoying more than painful as it shakes the pins off my hat and caused much confusion to whomever I am talking to! I’ve had cops stop me and are talking to me and suddenly look really pissed off and say something like “NO? What do you mean No?” I then have to explain that it was my head twitching! I’ve had waitresses ask if I want another beer. I say yes but my head says no! It has been a real pain for a long time! I have had tests, MRI’s, x-rays, more tests and been poked, prodded, manipulated, and gone for therapy, physical therapy, acupuncture and diagnostics of all kinds by family Doctors, specialists, neurologists, neurological surgeons and just about everyone else you could mention at hospitals and clinics throughout the Province! I thought I had exhausted the whole system and had The Rider’s Mag - Page 8

pretty much resigned myself to the fact that my head would probably still be twitching long after I was dead and I’d probably still twitch in my ashen form inside my 50 tank and They would have to take extra care to see that it was fixed properly to the wall in the CH! So, when I got a phone call from a Movement Disorder Clinic at the Toronto Western Hospital, my initial reaction was to just blow it off as a wasted effort! This was set up by a neurologist here in Newmarket who seemed quite sincere and knowledgeable and seemed to have a real interest so I agreed! I was still sceptical and right up until the day of the appointment I was ready to blow it off and just avoid anymore disappointment and waste of time, gas and money for parking! I showed up and a nice Doctor took me in and gave me an examination. She then brought in another Doctor who further examined me and they told me that they would be able to help me with some injections in a couple of muscles in my neck and that the treatment was covered by OHIP! I had nothing to lose but the annoying twitch so I agreed! The needles didn’t feel all that good but it has now been three days and my neck and head haven’t twitched since! Apparently, the treatment wears off after a few months but if it works, I’ll put up with the sting of a couple of needles! Never give up! We continue to make progress with the print version of The Mag in getting it back up and running smoothly! It has involved many changes, some large, some small, along with much tweaking and fine tuning but it has really made a difference! We still get some who resent having to pay for the Mag and think that it should still be free! Well, to those people I have to say; “Too bad!” Those days have gone just like (I will date myself a bit here as I recall prices that did exist when I was a young lad.) 10 cent cups of coffee, 15 cent hamburgers, 37 cent large packages of cigarettes or 35 cent a gallon, gasoline! The truth is if we didn’t find a way to differ the rising costs of printing and distributing The Riders Mag, I would have had no choice but to shut it down! So, the choice is now in the hands of the readers to pay what I regard to be a small price of $2.00, or not have a Riders Mag at all! The Riders Mag has always supported Motorcycle Clubs of all stripes and colours and we tried to present the real stories and true facts about what is going on in the Biker World that affects and has affected bikers! Stories and facts that the main stream media can’t seem to present to the public untarnished, unfettered and uninfluenced by Law Enforcement and Politics and the propaganda that they use and have always used to cloud facts with! So, it was extremely encouraging to have had several Motorcycle Clubs approach me with some really good

ideas as to how they can best support the Mag! Some have out and out sent money to help support us and keep us alive! Thank you! Your support and encouragement are very much appreciated! One Club, in particular has offered to buy a specific number of Mags that they can give to there membership! Amazing! Our online statistics continue to rise and this version seems to be gaining much favour from our readers as they can read it on their smart phones and tablets and such but there is still a large demand for the printed copies and we are back in print! We are, however, not distributing as many printed Mags as far or as wide as we once did! Distribution costs are enormous, second only to the cost of printing and therefore a huge factor. We are being selective in how many spots and in what areas carry the Mag as well! It may be harder to find a printed copy for a while as we restructure, reorganize and redefine our delivery routes but check the Biker friendly guide in the back of each Mag for a location near you and if you have a place that would like to carry The Riders Mag, just have them call us and sign up! I would far sooner have the Mags in a place such as a shop that can use the extra traffic, extra income and attention that The Riders Mag can bring! We will soon have our website up and running (Our computer Guru have had some personal issues to contend with lately.) soon and we have many plans in the works to make it informative, entertaining that will enhance and compliment our printed version! I have been out and about distributing the Mags and doing other work vital to the Mag that I wish I could have been out doing all along but the workload in the office prevented it! With Brenda, Kris and Barbie taking charge it has freed me up and is proving worthwhile! We also have new swag produced or in production and are coming up with more as budgets permit! One item is our “Respect” themed patches, pins and stickers! Respect seems to be a rare commodity these days and sadly lacking in society as a whole! Police demand respect for their officers, objecting to offensive names and terminologies used to describe them, yet cannot resist using derogatory and defamatory terms when talking about bikers! They can’t resist throwing in the Biker Gang distinction rather than Motorcycle Club and don’t hesitate to suggest that all Bikers are Criminals and that the ones who don’t have criminal records just haven’t got caught yet! You give what you get! If you don’t give respect don’t expect it in return! By the time you read this our 20th Anniversary party will have been run and we hope we all had a good time! Twenty Years in the books and the adventure continues! It looks like it should be an amazing year with all kinds of exciting stuff going on! Many are looking forward to the Rideau Rendezvous in beautiful Smiths Falls this year as they try to set the Guinness World Record for the largest all female rider burnout with over 300 participants! I guess you can expect the acrid cloud of smoke to hover over Smiths Falls for about three days unless there is a strong wind! We have The Peterborough Swap Meet, The Barrie Swap Meet, and The World-Famous Fort Erie Swap Meet all going on so come on out and get those missing pieces to your winter project or just socialize with great people!

The London Swap Meet Weather, the lack of good stuff as opposed to the ton of crap that Mother Nature has dumped on us all winter came into play once again and wreaked havoc on attendance at yet another Swap Meet! With us having made the jump ahead to daylight saving time earlier that morning, we knew that despite what the clocks told us we were an hour earlier dealing with this shit than we should have been! Hello! We turned them ahead ourselves! Did you think we wouldn’t notice! Kind of like a sneaky Justin Trudeau, Liberal Government move! Sunny ways my ass! You pompous little @$#^)&))!!!!!!!!!!!! The words; pleasant, nice or even passible are none that I would use to describe what I woke up to and certainly could not be used to describe the road conditions all the way to London! Kris and I hunkered down bleary eyed and slightly frazzled in the warmth of the Black Bitches comfy interior while a steady barrage of a cycle of freezing rain, just rain, snow and a blizzard or two happened outside! Despite the odds and Mother Natures obvious attempt to blow us off the face of the earth and bury us under a huge pile of slush and assorted frozen crap (Personally I think it was hate motivated and involved unconstitutional profiling that was probably initiated and influenced by Law Enforcement, and an immediate judicial inquiry should be launched!) we persevered once again! We arrived at the Union Hall, leaped joyously from the Black Bitch and each of us held the middle fingers of both hands defiantly high, The Rider’s Mag - Page 9

towards the Heavens in a triumphant salute, while “Highway to Hell” played at full volume from the sound system! We then unloaded our stuff and made our way into the building where we set up and readied ourselves for whatever the day held in store for us! Not too surprisingly, the weather started to clear! You failed again Mother Nature! You evil, vindictive, Bitch! Looking around the room it was obvious that the weather had already had an ill effect on attendance among the vendors as the usual hustle and bustle of set up was somewhat diminished and there were a number of empty tables! Our own “Stitch” was there already as was our Buddy Ron and the Hale Family from Strictly V Twin up in the heart of majestic Pefferlaw were also there and fully engrossed in setting up all the fine wares that they bring to these events! The lovely Amy was as radiant as ever! Fred was a blur as he made his way from table to table in search of more goodies! There were still lots of bargains to be had and lots of great stuff to check out but crowds were decidedly lighter than usual! I could see the worried look on organiser Josh’s face as he looked out on what was a quiet room and I went over and tried my best to reassure him that all would work out! I firmly believed that it was a combination of the weather and the time change that had caused the slow start to the day and it would pick up! Sure enough, you could hear the audible change in dynamics of the room and a look up confirmed that we indeed, had a Swap Meet going on in London today! The crowd swelled! More Vendors showed up and tables filled! This was more like it! Even the newest addition to our crew, Ted “Cheyenne” McCabe showed up with a pile of his stuff along with a pile of Mags and tried to run in competition with us by underselling us! But like all good things, they must come to an end and by early afternoon, the hall that was crowded to over-crowded at one time suddenly became quiet once again and vendors took that as a que to start packing up and heading off! We did the same and were on the road home under much better conditions that when we came! It was a good day, because any day spent among good people, simply has to be a good day! See you next year!

First biker party of the season, check. It’s finally here! Bike season is coming! Bike season is coming! Forget the fat man in a red suit, I’m talking the slightly curvy bodacious ta-tas of Mother Nature and SPRING!! Snow is melting, river is now not worthy of the snowmobiles that’s been caressing its banks over the last few months, and I’ve even seen bikes out, taking advantage of above zero temps (ya crazy bastards!) Soon, the asphalt will be calling, and we’ll be lacing on the vests, mounting that iron horse and remembering just what it’s like to be alive. Making other men and women who don’t ride, envy us for doing it! We’ll catch up with the friends we’ve missed and make new ones along the way! Now my bike is not yet painted. I know what you’re saying, L’il Red, get off your ass and get on it! Well, I think I found my design, and my artist, it’s just a matter of getting it done. Mike has been so incredibly thoughtful and got me new stuff for my bike at Christmas (remember, my xmas bling? If you didn’t read my last article, then I’m hurt and I’m not tellin’.) He just got me more stuff, like a lowering kit (here comes the jokes) and a phone mount as my gps is used a lot. The lowering kit will help me as most of you know, I’m slightly vertically challenged, and I still struggle with my U-turns and being on gravel/soft grass. Mike is hoping if I’m a little lower to the ground, my riding can only get better. Now, if I would only stop cutting corners… He spent the last weekend, adding the touches to my ride, while I finished my studies. He’s still looking for his elusive unicorn that is the Indian Motorcycle, a specific one, and I think once it’s found, my existence will be… well…non-existent for awhile. I was the same when I got my new (but previously loved) ride a few years back. If he has a heated seat for me, I’ll take second to the bike… occasionally LMAO The first biker party has happened, and my sweet friend Donna organized the event. Happening around St. Patty’s Day, a bunch of us got together at the Peterborough Naval

The Rider’s Mag - Page 12

Association, and I didn’t plan for the weather! I was just so excited to be wearing a dress! In three vehicles, we all showed up to have a few drinks, meet new people, and raise funds for Desiree’s Ride. That’s Donna’s baby out here. I’ve spoken of it before, and it’s a fundraiser for the Victims of Crime. I encourage you to look it up on Facebook, and this summer, Donna is organizing a charity ride out of Classy Chassis, and it promises to be a great ride! The charities that benefit from this loving venture is Peterborough Victim Services and the YWCA Women’s Crossroads Shelter. Finding my spot (close to the bar, dance floor and washrooms) the party got started. Door prizes were drawn, and tickets were and are still being sold for a quilt that my firecracker of a friend Lisa has made, specifically for this event. The draw will be held this summer, and included with it, is an ‘In Memory’ patch to Desiree herself. We were there with some of my favourite people. Kate and Rod, Glenn and Wendy, and new friends of ours, Greg and Yanina, Lisa and Chris, Donna’s hubby Martin, and I even took my cousin Emily as she loves that I ride and goes to Fleming College. I was happy when I saw Wayne and Marie from Riders there. With their own custom-made Irish shirts.

Did I mention cake? Of course, Lisa was only too kind to keep bringing them to our table. I got three myself!!! It was so good! (No, I did NOT eat three, I had two if you MUST know) The only thing that really surprised me about this event was the riding groups that I expected to be there, that were not. Groups that

we’ve been a part of, that we’ve supported. With riding motorcycles, there is one thing that I’ve learned, loved and lived and it’s this; the biker community supports each other, with no stipulations on anyone other that to have and show respect. Sadly, it appears not everyone shares the same value. So please, buy a ticket for this homemade lovely, and know that the purple that it represents is for Desiree. Peterborough is having its Spring Motorcycle Swap Meet on Sunday March 31st, from 9 til 3. These guys have bikes for sale, parts and accessories as well as hard to find stuff for your ride. Donna will be there with the Desiree’s Ride so make sure that you drop in to say hey! Now the Spring Motorcycle Show is coming on April 6-7 at the International Centre. Jason McCoy will be there, The Riders Mag will have a booth, as will the Riders group themselves (Marie and Wayne!) Desiree’s Angels will be there too, so lots for you to see! And hey, I need a new vest so if you see one..lemme know! Now, I’ve spoken about featuring a beautiful woman rider for my articles, as well as a Vet! We don’t appreciate our Vets enough, and I could only hope that featuring them here will help to say, ‘Thank You’. The first Vet is coming together, as you need to do right by these men and women, and I want to make sure I don’t miss anything. However, I am ready for the girls!!!!! Bring ‘em on! I can think of no one better to start with, then Donna herself! Not only does she do endless work to get Desiree’s Ride going out East, but she’s having her bike repaired to be ready for this year. (Well, her hubby Martin is the genius behind the rebuild, as they originally thought she’d have to write-off the bike!) Riding for 14 years, her baby is a 2003 Yamaha

Roadstar. Having no favourite riding spot or adventure in mind, her thing is just having her ass in her bike seat and the wind in her hair. (It’s like a commercial isn’t it?). When I asked her about why she rides, she said if it wasn’t for riding, she’d never have met her new family. As for her connection to Desiree? Well, the one and only Angie N. had what was called a ‘garage install’ last year. Hellbound Customs did the garage install, as it was the installation of ground effects lights, and Donna was getting this little addition done to her baby. It was there that she met Wolf, Karen, Randy, Michelle, Sean and Tammy. (Randy and Michelle own Hellbound Customs). She heard more about Desiree’s Ride, met Desiree’s Mom Susan, and climbed onboard to build the Kawartha Chapter of Desiree’s Ride. If you know of a woman that you think should be featured, drop me a line. I’d like to feature women that ride a variety of bikes. With April and May upon us, the events are now trickling in. I’ll be at the bike show in April, and I’m sure we will be at a few early bike events, weather permitting. (I guess

that means I better get at my whitewalls and paint!) I leave you now with

this, I’ll try to help keep you informed on things by posting them on my FB page at L’il Red “L’il Red’s Country”. You can also catch me by email at lilred@ theridersmag.com. Got an event coming, hook me up with the details. It’s that easy. Luv ya! The Rider’s Mag - Page 13

on1wheel.dr@gmail.com “Ok, trust me on this.” Mike flashed a moment of seriousness from inside his Shoei. “When we turn onto my road you can’t wheelie, there's not enough room to get it back down and you'll never make my driveway.” Laugh lines tattled on the devious smile behind the chin bar, a veil over his own failed attempts. I glanced at Mark and with a slight gesture of readiness, we snicked into first gear and began. Destined for Mike's home in Bailieboro, we left Port Hope and the Great Lake Ontario behind and after a few kilometers on the multi lane 401 we escaped to the swooping single track of County Road 10. I was in some damn fast company and felt at ease as our trio maintained a tidy flight on the fast but sometimes bumpy road. A lifetime on the street and enough closed course laps to know the secrets, I rode with confidence in our bubble of trust. Mike is decisive, fast and calculating and a fixture at the front whether on a track or the road and Mark, a new member to our group at that time, quietly and confidently let us know he was fast on a national level. Winning the Parts Canada Amateur 600 championship a few years later proved it. Whether you’re a 1 percenter, a racer or found somewhere in between, we all surrender ourselves to trust and perhaps it is the threat of death that regulates how deep our bonds become. Later that day I would push this theory to the limit as I balanced on the edge of catastrophe. Speed combined with close proximity is always a risk but the level of trust and skill among the participants will naturally determine how close, is close. I settled into the second position with Mark close enough behind I could hear his 1000 gixxer and I knew Mike, only a few meters ahead, was equally aware. Fast? Oh yes, we rode fast but a steady fast because the cut and thrust that we knew from the race track has no place on the street. There is great trust among racers but if you move that level of riding onto the unpredictable street, it all falls apart. Its not just what you think of the other riders, its what you think of everything and at race pace we must trust every detail, an impossibility on the street. A moment after Mike slid from right to left cheek off his R1's seat I followed suit and behind, I knew Mark would mimic the change as we flowed together as one. Three riders with three individual minds sliced through the exact same space moments apart, with centimeters measuring the differences and even less between our thoughts. Our six wheeled express banked into the fast uphill left and rapidly closed on the lone car. I saw the line adjustment needed just as Mike chose it and a moment later Mark made the perfect push on the Suzuki's left bar to follow suite. Effortlessly and safely we corrected our path and zoomed past the cager. Motorcycles brought us together yet they were not what held us together. They created the friendship that does. Much can be understood through observing someone, things like confidence levels and what they do with their eyes. Are they bragging at every opportunity (?) or do they listen and learn. Watch close and be the person who listens and learns, and teaches. The Rider’s Mag - Page 14

You can judge these exterior metrics well enough to ride with these unknowns but to fully trust people you need to understand how they think and we did. Directly linked to our survival instinct, it is no wonder that it can be so elusive and painfully immediate when lost. Our lives are dictated by the pleasure and the pain that is trust and our world has hardened us so we become hesitant to grant it. Throttles blipped and almost in unison, hands and feet slow danced with the controls that contain the fury, we were there. Down to first gear as I watched Mike turn and accelerate away towards his house and as I turned to follow, I broke that trust we had forged in friendship. Arrogance and the lure of an RC 51’s addictive torque tricked me into disregarding my warning and as the big v twin swept passed 4000 rpm my id stomped on a cowering ego and with a twist, I balanced on a vertical bike. The detail in a blink of time never fails to amaze me and as I played with the balance point I saw that Mike was 30 meters in front and abreast of his driveway. I watched him turn his head to the right, towards his house but what registered was him turning around to look directly at me and I saw regret in his eyes. “ I told you Dave, you cant wheelie! Now please, don’t hurt me too bad when I turn into your path, my wife is watching.” Before I chopped the throttle I saw the upcoming accident. The underside of my bike smashes Mikes shoulder and how the

front tire touches his helmet and grabs hold. I heard the surprised grunt as his head was wrenched by the spinning Dunlop and I saw two friends broken by stupidity. “STOP” and as the front contacted the road I tried my best. Muscle memory started the progressive squeeze at the lever and a huge wheelie transitioned seamlessly into an equally impressive stoppie as the front loaded with weight. As I modulated brake pressure to not endo, I remember thinking “Well, I can't stop any faster then this” and I glided past Mike with the ‘51's rear axle level with his eyes. Turns out Mike had suspected my weakness and that turn of the helmet was him watching me in the R1's mirror. We laugh about it today but I saw the glint of disappointment in your eyes Mike and I know that I can never replace that bit of lost respect. A twisted positive though, high speed stoppies are much easier then I thought. The Rider’s Mag - Page 15

"She took it with her! I always knew she didn't trust me!" In Australia, the curbside garbage carts are called "wheelie bins." A garbage collector is driving along a Sydney street picking up the wheelie bins and emptying them into his rubbish truck. He goes to one house where the bin hasn't been left out. In the spirit of kindness and after having a quick look about for the bin, he gets out of his truck, goes to the front door and knocks. There's no answer. Being a conscientious bloke, he knocks again. Eventually, a Japanese man comes to the door. "Harro!" says the Japanese man. "G'day mate, where's ya' bin?" asks the collector. "I bin on toilet," explains the Japanese bloke, a bit perplexed. Realizing the fellow had misunderstood him, the bin man smiles and tries again. "No mate, where's ya' dust bin?" "I dust been to toilet, I toll you!" says the Japanese man, still perplexed. "Listen," says the garbage collector. "You're misunderstanding me. I mean, where's ya' wheelie bin?'" "OK, OK." replies the Japanese man with a sheepish grin, and whispers in the collector's ear. "I wheelie bin having sex wiffa wife's sista!" Coming home from his Little League game, Billy swung open the front door very excited. Unable to attend the game, his father immediately wanted to know what happened. "So, how did you do son?" he asked. "You'll never believe it!" Billy said. "I was responsible for the winning run!" "Really? How'd you do that?" "I dropped the ball." Turns out that it's not the turkey that makes you sleepy it's being drunk at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The good people at Butterball have been running a tollfree hotline for turkey-cooking tips since 1981. Every year the turkey talk line receives more than 100,000 phone calls, but sadly, they have not once been able to save a turkey's life. So my wife recently got a tattoo of a seashell on her inner thigh. It's really pretty, and functional too. When I put my ear to it I can smell the ocean. cont'd pg 26

This astrology has been written in “Quin-trains” meaning there are five lines to the divination. The fifth line will reveal the answer to the other 4 lines. There are 13 twisted spokes in creation of my wheel I use instead of the common 12. Since this wheel is created this way, this allows the reader to approach the wheel in 2 ways. As each sign represents a spoke in the wheel, you can read either what your own spoke has to say or read what all the spokes have to say to share a visual to the whole picture. See how all the spokes complete your wheel. The 13th spoke is what I call the “Dath Spoke” It is the spoke that binds all other spokes together, so you can see exactly what wheel(s) you’re using for your ride. Consider it having extra rubber for extra mileage.

Supposedly a true story, but who knows? Who keeps chloroform in the house?] A woman who got it into her head that a fresh turkey produced a far superior meal to a frozen one made a trek out to a turkey farm to buy a live bird. But after returning home and looking square into the eyes of the living, breathing creature she'd just purchased, she just couldn't bring herself to kill it by wringing its neck or chopping off its head. Instead, she managed to put the turkey to sleep with chloroform and then began the process of dry-plucking it. Just as she finished removing the last of the feathers, however, the bird woke up. The next-door neighbors responded to her shouts and arrived at her back door to find a woman being chased around her kitchen by an angry, naked turkey. The World Giving Index released a report yesterday that found for the first time ever, men are more likely than women to donate money to charity. And even MORE likely to donate to Charity's friends Crystal, Bambi, and Cinnamon. Whether a woman fakes her orgasms or not is something the majority of men would rather not question. This is in case they discovered that she has been faking it all along, and that they are not, in fact, the stud they thought women go wild for. Rather, they are a pathetic creature with a problem, who needs to be patronized. For those of you who would prefer not to ask her, but would still like to know, there is a simple checklist to help you. 1. In the middle of lovemaking, and just before the moment it sounds as though she is about to have an orgasm, stop and take away the magazine she's been looking at. If she says, "Dammit, I was reading that!" she was faking. 2. If her panting, groaning and screaming are in tune, or sound like a familiar song, she can't be concentrating enough on the "job at hand," and must therefore be faking it. Or else she really likes the song playing on her iPod. 3. A rule of thumb, which is usually very accurate, is: stop at random and record her response. If every time you stop she says, "Mmmmm, you were wonderful, baby," she is faking it. If she says, "Don't stop!" she isn't. However, if she says "Don't stop!" hours after lovemaking has finished, it is possible that she may have fallen asleep, and missed most of the excitement. Remember these guidelines for future reference. If your wife or girlfriend ever asks, 'If I was to arrange a threesome for your birthday, which of my friends would you pick to join in?' Never give two names. A woman has been charged with filing a false police report after posting that she had been kidnapped on Facebook. People grew suspicious when the woman 'liked' her own kidnapping. A man goes into the home improvement store and says, "I'd like to order 5,000 finishing bricks." "Certainly," says the salesman, "Are they for a garage?" "No," says the man; "They're for a Bar-B-Q." "Why do you need so many bricks for a bar-b-q?" asks the salesman. "Well," says the man... 1990 to 1997 Evolution Clutch Pt II In 1990, Harley-Davidson begins to use the same clutch packs in both Big Twin models and the Sportster line. Previously, Big Twin and Sportster clutches were not interchangeable. Nineteen eighty-five and earlier dry clutch hubs were steel and the clutch hub nuts were beefy and strong. This all changes with the aluminum, wet clutch hubs and their smaller nuts, beginning in 1985. Therefore, on wet clutches, do not use a torque gun on the clutch hub nut unless you are sure it is calibrated correctly. The clutch hub nut is a left-hand thread to prevent the rotational movement of the clutch hub from loosening the clutch hub nut. Instead, the rotational force will be a tightening one. It is better to use a torque wrench to achieve the correct specification. It is very easy to damage the clutch hub/nut. Use 262 Loctite on the clutch hub nut as well as the engine compensator sprocket nut, which must be disassembled when removing the clutch pack. The primary fluid must be up to the outside (bottom) diameter of the clutch diaphragm spring with the bike standing straight up. Another equally good measurement for clutch-primary fluid levels is 2.75” below the center line of the clutch adjusting screw, or, use 30oz to 36oz (89ml to 107ml) of fluid in a dry primary. Dry means that all the parts, including inside the chain cases have been cleaned. Any of the three methodologies works, just use the method most comfortable for you at the time. Transmission fluid can leak or blow-by the seal and into the primary, especially if overfilled. The correct way to determine transmission fluid full-level is to fill until the full-mark on the transmission dipstick. Duhhhh dats right, anybody could figure dat out; except it is to the full mark of the dipstick with the dipstick unthreaded and resting in place! No one would figure this out; not me anyway. Beginning March 1, 1991, in midyear production several design improvements were implemented as running manufacturing changes. Running manufacturing changes means that early 1991 models have the old design parts while late 1991 models going forward have the improvements. All three changes are concerned with ensuring a good supply of oil to the clutch release mechanism as well as other internal components. To resolve potential misalignment issues with transmission end cover fitment against the transmission bearing housing, H-D doweled the mating surfaces in two places with HD-609 dowels. H-D had already doweled the inboard side of the transmission bearing housing to the transmission casing in two places with HD-375 dowels. This doesn’t have anything to do with the clutch release mechanism housed inside the transmission end cover except that if all the oil leaks out it does not bode well for the longevity of the internal mechanisms. An oil slinger is added to the end of the right clutch pushrod (37069-90) Mid Year 1991. The 1984 to early 1991 right clutch pushrod (37089-84) does not have this metal umbrella shaped appendage to direct oil specifically at the clutch throwout bearing (37312-75) that locates on the end of both early and late right clutch pushrods. This simple addition will increase clutch throwout bearing life substantially. Funnily or not so funny, the older 4-speed transmissions incorporated a very similar oil slinger (32778-75) on their clutch throwout bearing (37312-75) from 1975 to 1984. Yet, the Evolution 5-speed The Rider’s Mag - Page 28

transmission did not have benefit of a clutch throwout bearing oil slinger from 1984 to early-1991. Harley accountant bean counters eliminate parts to save pennies per bike, sometimes creating disastrous warranty problems. This is just another example of the wacky world of Harley-Davidson. Oil for inside the transmission end cover and its clutch release mechanism flows from the main body of the transmission through a hole in the transmission access door known in Harleyese as the Bearing Housing. The older housings (34700-87-88-89A, 34730-87-88-89A, 34731-86A-89, and 34732-86A-89A) had one oil feed hole. The 10-part numbers delineating different early housings explain by polished, black wrinkle, or plain finishes along with variations to fit FLT, FXR, and Softail models. The upgraded access door transmission housings (35250-90B, 3526090B, and 35258-87C) improve with an extra oil flow hole from the transmission into the transmission end cover. All of the suffix letters, A’s B’s, and C’s indicate many changes along the way. Any bearing needs lubrication to survive. Bearings under duress like the clutch release (throwout) bearing (37312-75) need constant oil for both lubrication and cooling. Therefore, adequate oil is the first remedy to any throwout bearing chronic wear situation. Oil level specifications may change year-by-year so it is always necessary to consult your manual. However, if there is an ongoing problematic 1987 and later 5-speed throwout bearing situation; the solution may be the addition of a return spring. Adding a spring (33201-79) ensures a complete return of the clutch release ball bearing and ramp assembly. This will take pressure off the throwout bearing to alleviate punishing stress. This spring has its origins as a shifter pawl return spring in the 1979 to 1986 4-speed transmission cowpie top shifter cover and assembly. This spring is what causes the 4-speed shifter pedal to return to a center position after shifting or engaging neutral. Ahhh, but the shifter pedal moves up and down. One spring will only return it from the up or down position to a center one. Yes, that is why there are two shifter pawl springs in the 4-speed transmission; one for return from each shift direction. I mention all of this in order for the reader to realize that this spring is a strong one that tolerates no deviation from the norm yet is weak enough to allow necessary movement. Install this spring by removing the 1987 and later 5-speed transmission end cover with a clean oil drain pan underneath. If the oil is fresh, it may be reused. If not drain all the oil and replace with new transmission fluid after assembly. Personally, I always use new oil. Inside the end cover, disconnect the clutch cable end from the clutch release inner ramp (25452-87A) coupling (3492086). Install the spring (33201-79) over the clutch cable protruding inside the end cover. Reattach the clutch cable end into the clutch release inner ramp coupling. Install the transmission end cover back onto the transmission housing. The spring will be slightly compressed, holding the clutch release ramp to its lowest position on its

three ball bearings (H-D 8873 x 3). When pulling in the clutch lever and pulling the clutch cable inner, the spring must compress even further to allow the inner clutch release ramp to ride up on its three roller bearings. Therefore, when allowing the clutch lever out, the compressed spring returns to its least allowable compressed state pushing the clutch release ramp to its extended position thus taking any pressure off the throwout bearing. Once everything is reinstalled, pull the clutch lever to the handlebar three times. This will seat the clutch ball and clutch release ramp mechanism. Adjust the clutch cable via the expander threads protected by the clutch cable boot somewhere near the middle of the clutch cable to achieve ⅛” to 3/16” (3.20mm-4.78mm) free play at the lever. No lever free play equals wear-out pressure on the clutch release throwout bearing. By the way, this lever play specification changes all the time in different manuals. My rule of thumb is to have a minimum of ⅛” (3.20mm) free play at the lever. Oil level specifications may change year-by-year so it is always necessary to consult your manual. The amounts for 1990 are: 38 oz to 44 oz for FLT/FXR/FXD rubber mount models and 30 oz to 36 oz for rigid mount Softail models. The exact amount determines when the bike is straight up and not leaning on the side stand. The oil must be to the bottom of the outside diameter of the diaphragm spring. Of course, the outer primary clutch derby must be removed to observe this oil level. Do not overfill the primary chain case with oil. Overfilling can cause clutch drag with consequential rough transmission gear engagement and disengagement. This last point is an interesting one since the clutch is referred to as a wet clutch. A little more oil should not hurt. Well, yes it does because the purpose of the oil is not to lubricate the clutch plates but to act as a coolant to remove clutch plate heat. However, the primary oil does function as both a lubricant and a coolant for the primary chain and related components. In my opinion, Harley-Davidson primary lubricant is 10W-40 automotive oil with a red dye to easily distinguish it from 20W-50 engine oil and the 80/90 hypoid transmission lubricant. The 20W-50 engine oil must deal with a dirty environment and extreme heat. The 10W-40 primary fluid must deal with less heat but heat nevertheless. It must also flow into tight spaces between clutch plates and therefore, is less viscous than the engine oil. Transmission fluid must deal with the shear forces of the straight cut spur gear teeth that cut up the long intertwined oil molecules. There are special additives to combat this. It may seem that 80/90 hypoid transmission fluid is more viscous than the smaller nomenclature 20W-50 engine oil but both are pretty much equal in the viscosity department once attaining operating temperatures. In next month’s Riders Mag, I will continue with the 1998 and later Twin Cams wet clutch that has fitment with both Big Twin and Sportster models. Harley is beginning to make many changes instead of using the same components year after year. Donny Petersen www.donnypetersen.com

Hey kids, happy springtime! We have had a hell of a few months here in the states, someone apparently struck a nerve with mother nature. Have you ever heard of the polar vortex or bomb cyclones? Well, we have had the pleasure of experiencing both, -53F one month and 100 MPH winds with a foot of snow the next. Today in my world, it is warm-ish and raining which is causing some record-breaking floods. Someday we shall all ride again! Aside from all that fun and excitement, my son and I managed to squeeze in a trip to the Mama Tried motorcycle show and Flat Out Friday races. Milwaukee Wisconsin, home of Harley Davidson, hosts this little shin-dig every February and makes a 4-day weekend out of bike events.

It all begins on a Thursday with a kick-off party at The Fuel Cafe 5th st. This is an epic get together where this year a guy took a mini bike and rode it down the bar off the end into the crowd at a rather alarming rate of speed... no, no one was injured and much entertainment was had. The HD Museum hosted a 70’s themed bike night featuring a roller derby, DJ, drink specials, couples tattoo sessions, and a whole lot of polyester and corduroy. Moving along into Friday, The Fuel Cafe 5th St. offered a

The Rider’s Mag - Page 30

biker brunch with motorcycle films, shot girls and an all-youcan-eat fish fry. Next up, Flat Out Friday Flat Track races! This event featured 20+ races from expert to women’s classes, a children's bicycle race, and they even gathered a “Goofball” class with racers and machines that appeared to be from Sesame Street or some other cartoon. The amusement levels were high and the engines were roaring for hours, I won't lie, there is something about the smell of exhaust that excites me. Of course and after party from the races was held and live music played while drinks were poured at The Cooperage. Saturday arrived with a bang at The Rave Eagle’s Club where multiple floors of the building were completely taken over by vendors, restaurants, bars, and bikes. Inside, outside, upstairs and down there was something around every corner and a giant auditorium filled with hand selected invite-only builders creations and barn finds! From antiques to uniques this show had things of your wildest motorcycle dreams. My son is fourteen and not as big of a moto fan as his mother but even he was amazed and excited about the displays.

The show runs all day Saturday and Sunday and is preceded and followed by pre and post parties. The Iron Horse Hotel is a host for the shows before and after entertainments as well as the Fuel Cafe, all you have to do is buy a ticket, show up, and enjoy! In other news, I am currently traveling 1500 miles across the US in a van with dirt bikes to Las Vegas. Once I arrive I will pick up my better half at the airport, unload the bikes, and park the van in storage. Next, we will ride roughly 1300 miles from Las Vegas down the Baja peninsula to Cabo, or wherever we end up. I stumbled upon a phone app which has been slowly teaching me a bit of Spanish but mostly, yo no hablo Espanol. So three weeks on the back roads of Mexico might get interesting with the language barrier. However, I’m excited about anywhere that is above freezing and now covered in ice and snow. I have never traveled on a dirt bike before but packing and planning have been fun. You would be amazed how much gear you can pack on a Husqvarna 450 and a KTM 500. As is turns out they make damn near as many creature comfort accessories for the off-road machines as they do for the street cruisers. Never in my life did I think I would have an intercom in my moto helmet and a phone charger with a phone mount attached to my dirt bike bars but, it is now a thing. I was a bit worried about saddle sores trying to sit my ass on a moto seat for 21 days, then I discovered Moto-Skiveez. I believe these padded undershorts are literally going to take the pain out of my ass! If you would like to follow my adventures log onto Motorambling.com, or, like, friend, and follow Motorambling on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for video and photo updates! Otherwise, I’ll be back here next month writing all about it. Chat soon!

By the time that people are reading my column Spring will have finally arrived and hopefully, in some areas, riders have been able to get out and put some miles on. But at the moment, in eastern Ontario, we are still prisoners to snow and ice! For now, we have to get our kicks out of attending many of the various swap meets that are happening around us.

Some of those swap meets include the Spring Motorcycle Swap Meet in Peterborough hosted by our good friend Larry Pooler. Larry has been promoting motorcycle events for nearly 30 years and this one usually has tables of top quality parts as well as vendors with biker accessories. Hopefully I will be able to have the opportunity to get down and participate in the Peterborough show. Another swap meet that a lot of Eastern Ontario riders try to attend is the 4th Annual Moto Swap Meet in Montreal. I know that this show attracts a lot of riders who are either looking for vintage parts or they are interested in parts for building Bobbers. Hopefully, we will be down there promoting the Mag and if we are, please stop by the table and say hello because we always like to hear from our readers and at the same time find out what is going on in their part of our community. Another annual event that I want to make sure motorcycle riders in the Ottawa and surrounding area are aware of, is the official declaration by the City of Ottawa that May is Motorcycle Awareness Month! Many people across The Rider’s Mag - Page 32

Ontario are not aware that the group SOAR, aka Society of Ottawa Area Riders were not only instrumental for the city to get on board and create the event but the same group was responsible for getting the Province of Ontario to follow suit several years later. I urge all clubs and independent riders to make the effort to have your local city council or whatever get up off their butts and do the same! The more municipalities that acknowledge this event, the more the press will promote it ,and in the long run maybe make more drivers aware of us and share the road and save a life. In past years the proclamation took place early on a Sunday morning followed by demonstrations of rider hacks such as learning how to pick up your motorcycle by yourself if there was nobody around to assist you! Many area clubs set up info tables and if the weather gods are not cooperating, then the event moves inside City Hall. Last year it was a bit rainy out but there was a good crowd of riders, groups and organizations that included the good brothers and sisters of the Ottawa chapter of BACA/

Bikers Against Child Abuse, the Retread MC, the Widows Sons MC who are riders who also happen to be members of the Shriners and across from them was the info table for Safer Roads Ottawa who provide lots of information on trying to make our roads less dangerous for all of us. Our good friend Keith Fong was there promoting the Annual Ride for Dad and while I am not sure, this may be the last year that Keith is co-chairman of the very well known event! The Ride, has spread across Canada from its humble beginnings in Ottawa all those years ago! Next to them was the table for the Annual Ride for Autism Ottawa founded by Dave and Noella Kuhnle. This ride is hosted by members of The Celtic Brotherhood and this year, the event is moving from July to June 22. The TCB Awareness Ride for Brain Injury on June 15th and their 1st Annual Hotcakes Ham & Harleys Fathers Days Breakfast for Bikers on June 16, with help from members from some of the other area clubs. The 2804 Dice Run held in Cassleman had an info table manned by two great guys and serious riders, Michel Dupuis and Claude Brunet. As I have mentioned before, their event keeps getting bigger and better each year and if you are looking for an excuse to have a good time with great people, then head out to Casselman on May 26th. Drop by the Riders Mag table, speaking of which, there was a table for the Mag and The Celtic Brotherhood in the hall. This year, SOAR’ chairman, Mike Bossio was successful in having the event moved to a Saturday, April 27th. Instead of starting as early as it used to, the times have been changed to 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. I hope that many of the area riding clubs and independent riders will come out and join in the celebration! Weather permitting, TCB will be putting on one of their Busted Bucket Challenge demonstration for the public. The Ottawa Chapter of GOC/Guardians of the Children will be holding their Empower the Children Run on June 8th starting out at B.A. Machine Performance Cycle. Last year, they had a lot of area riders showing up to support! Please add this to your events calendar and try to make it. I am waiting for confirmation from the Falcons MC as to, if they are going to hold their Dom City Dice Run again this year. I will be sure to mention it in my next column as well as the dates for the 3rd Annual Ironsides MC Charity Ride/Show Shine held up in the Ottawa Valley The Rider’s Mag - Page 33

near Renfrew. I was speaking with Eddie Hoszko, of the Simple Men MC and he plans on taking a year off from his Ottawa Valley Swap Meet. Stay tuned, because I am going to see if I can change his mind! All he would have to do is pick another date. On a more serious note I find myself having to mention the passing of Bud aka Buddy Bear Poulin. Many of you may be more familiar with his brother Jim Poulin and his lovely wife Veronica. Jim is a member of the Last Disciples MC and the promoter of the well know Greely Motorcycle Swap Meet. Bud was a rounder and a biker and came from the dark side of biking like many of us did in our day, but how could you find fault with a man who had the same Shovelhead for over 36 years and called her “Christine”. Jim mentioned that there will be a Celebration of Life for Bud that will be held at the Capital City Bikers Church on May 11th. I certainly hope that we will see many of you there both to honor Bud, the Poulin family and especially Jim & Veronica. Well that’s all for now but next month there should be lots to post because things are kicking in and this crappy winter has to piss off at some point. One other thing that I want to ask all of the readers and supporters of The Riders Mag, there are over half a million Brain Injury Survivors in the province of Ontario alone and many of them are bikers but even if they weren’t, they are our family members, our friends, our neighbors and people we work with and they need your support for the “Invisible” Injury so please contact your local Brain Injury Association and help out whether by donating or in some other way and if you are not sure who to contact then please email me at the address below and I will find out for you, thanks! If you would like more information about it or any of the other events I mention you can go on Facebook and go to “Motorcyco Beau’s Biker Events & Rides In Eastern Ontario” and you can also check out my Facebook group “Motorcyco Beau’s Biker Friendly Businesses in Eastern Ontario” as well. As Always I urge you to support the events and rides that are created by bikers and clubs in your area because unlike slick organizations that run events the local riders and clubs will be the same people that come to support your event. Also please remember to spend your money with businesses such as those that advertise in our Mag or who have proven they are truly Biker-Friendly and have shown their support for our lifestyle and in turn deserve our support and business back. If you have any issue that you think might be of interest to your fellow riders please reach out to me and let me know either by email or on Facebook. If you have an event or ride or you are a business that deals with either motorcycles or the people who ride them you might like to advertize or even perhaps become a distributor of “The Riders Mag” and if so please contact me by email or by phone. As always I want you to please remember that we make our Motorcycle Communities stronger by making them better! email: theridersmag.beau@gmail.com Twitter Riders Mag East @ motorcyco_beau You can also read us online : www.theridersmag.com/online Motorcyco Beau The Rider’s Mag - Page 34
