I said we’d love to, but our garden hose only reaches the driveway. A Martian couple and an Earthling couple have met and are talking about all sorts of things. Finally, the subject of sex comes up. “Just how do you guys do it?” asked the Earthling. “Pretty much the way you do,” responded the Martian. Discussion ensues and finally the couples decide to swap partners for the night and experience one another. The female Earthling and the male Martian go off to a bedroom where the Martian strips. He’s got only a teeny, weeny member; very short and very narrow. “What can you do with THAT!?” exclaims the woman. “Why?” he asked, “What’s the matter?” “Well,” she replied, “it’s nowhere near long enough. It’ll never reach!” “No problem,” he said and proceeded to slap his forehead with his palm. With each slap of his forehead, his member grew until it was quite impressively long. “Well,” she said. “That’s quite impressive, but it’s still pretty narrow.” “No problem,” he said again and started pulling his ears. With each pull his member grew wider and wider until the entire measurement was extremely exciting to the woman. “Wow!” she exclaimed as they fell into bed and made mad, passionate love. The next day the couples rejoined their normal partners and went off together. As we roll into June, we at The Mag, are going through some more changes and dealing with things that have presented many challenges over the past several Months! Numerous problems with computers, internet, e mail and other such things have plagued us continuously and caused us to lose focus and caused much instability! Everyday, we were faced with some new problem or challenge, but it now seems that we finally have a handle on things! However, it has thrown our scheduling off and the printing and distribution of the Mag this Month will be delayed by a week! The Mag, is advertising driven as advertising is our sole means of support! It dictates the size, quality and the quantity and limits what we can and cannot do! Without advertising the Mag would not exist! We are looking at bringing back The Men’s and Lady’s Bike features and are looking for an advertiser wishing to sponsor these features! Much like the Shop of the Month, they would be done on gloss and would be a two-page spread
and include a full-page ad for the sponsor! As with the calendar feature, it would be promoted as “_ _ _ _ _ presents; Men’/Lady’s Bike of the Month!” or similar wording. If you are interested please call us at the office! Some of our crew have been going through some issues as well as we found out our man “Wheelz” had an accident while riding his bike recently and while banged up pretty good, survived and recovering nicely! We have picked up, a couple of new crew members to represent the Toronto area which has long been under represented! My buddy Alphie and Handsome Harvey have stepped up to deliver and cover things in the downtown area when they can. As we age, we are all faced with our mortality and that of our friends and family! It isn’t easy and it doesn’t get any easier with practice! I have had way too much practice lately as it seems every day I get word that this one or that one has passed on! Derek “Crusty” Lee - October 2, 1945 - May 11, 2018 Crusty had been very ill for a long time so his passing The Rider’s Mag - Page 8
wasn’t really that much of a shock! Actually, what
surprised most people was how long he held on to life given the amount of pain he was enduring! Anyhow, the pain ended for Crusty at 1:50 PM on May 11, 2018 with his family and friends by his side at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre. I rode up to the Adam’s Funeral Home in Barrie and
joined with all the other friends and family who had come out to pay respect and say good bye to this unique individual! I’m not sure exactly when I first met Crusty and his lovely bride Dolores but it has been a long time! Back then he was just plain Derek and she, just Dolores! I seem to have a penchant for giving people nick names! Sometimes the recipient is happy with the name I apply to them, sometimes not! Sometimes the reason for being given the name is obvious, sometimes not! For example; I have called my bride of 50 years or better, “Godzilla” for as long as I can remember! For us, it is a term of endearment! When people actually meet her or see a picture of her, they are in shock and can’t understand why I would call her such a nasty name! Because, despite stories that I have told of her and descriptions that I have given of her on occasions you will likely figure out that I am prone to exaggeration from time to time! She is actually not 8 ft. tall with green lumps and scales all over her! A picture of her doesn’t really weigh 50 pounds and I don’t keep her chained up in the back yard and no she doesn’t chase the mail man and she isn’t the reason for the government cancelling door to door delivery of the mail! I also never chained her up outside various motorcycle Clubhouses to keep the cops at bay! I explain to people that although they might not see anything closely or remotely resembling Godzilla when you see the diminutive, pleasant little lady before them, that if you push the right buttons! You will see Godzilla! I guarantee it! I know which buttons to push and after 50 odd years of cohabitation, know that I shouldn’t push any of them but sometimes the urge to see if they still work, overrides common sense and sound decision making! Back to Crusty! At the time I had another good friend named Derek who works with wood and most times I saw him he was usually covered in saw dust! Obviously, he became Dusty Derek! Then I met Derek Lee and for some reason I was inspired to call him Crusty! The name stuck and no one has ever asked me to explain my reasons for giving it to him! The other side of the coin was his lovely wife Dolores whom I called Delightful! She is an incredibly strong, self-sufficient, wonderful, woman! My reasoning for that moniker was also never brought to question! Arriving in Barrie, I had, of course, taken a wrong turn and found myself going the in wrong direction! My Roving Reporter Senses told me I should pull over and refer to this Rotund, Roving Reporter’s now favourite tool contained in my Utility Belt; “Google” on my Blackberry! Thankfully, a long-time friend vivacious Anne Marie, happened by, stopped and rather then leave me to my own devices, turned around and led me directly to the funeral home! I rolled in and parked out front in the already packed parking lot, and after thanking my guide and savior, grabbed my hat and my trusty Nikon and headed over to meet a whole lot of familiar folks! It was good to see that there were a good number of motorcycles parked among the cars and trucks and that there were many patches on display as well as representatives from The Hells Angels MC, The Brothers of the Blade MC, and Iron Dragons to name but a few had come out to pay respects to a man who was always a solid, stand up individual. The sentiment of Crusty being finally free of pain and suffering making the loss of a great friend easier to bear seemed to be shared among the crowd. I wandered inside and made my way through the crowd to find Delightful Dolores greeting the many friends who had come out! She was a wreck and not taking it all too well but she had the love and support of close friends and family to help get her through! She stood there crying, beside the casket with Crusty looking resplendent in his beaded, fringed, Buckskin Coat, his ever-present hat sitting proudly atop his head and with all of his rings glistening! He lay there, among many of the trappings of his life, commemorated in pictures, depicting a man who lived his life to the fullest! To see him laying silent and still, without his usual ruddy complexion seemed very strange to me! Terry “Elvis” Chisholm did and excellent job of paying tribute to Crusty and performed his rendition of “You’ll never walk alone.” I got up to claim responsibility for giving him the Crusty handle! No lightning bolts shot through the roof and nobody threw anything so I guess I did OK! Crystal Wilson, Crusty and Dolores’s Daughter by Choice spoke of what Crusty meant to her and Garth Brook’s song “If tomorrow never comes.” Brought things to a close! A Piper played “Amazing Grace” as the casket containing “Crusty” was carried out! All in all, it was a fine and fitting tribute to a man whose spirit, inner warmth and love showed through the Crusty exterior to those who looked for it! I will miss you Crusty! GBNF – L&R – RIP

Gerry Hurren - May 3, 1942 – April 22, 2018 - RIP
Gerry Hurren was a great old friend and I was shocked to get the call from his daughter Penny, telling me that Gerry was gone! I knew Gerry and his wonderful wife and soul mate, Madeline for many years and loved to stop in for a visit whenever I was in town, usually while delivering The Mags!
Madeline’s passing, several years ago, Feb. 2, 2014 to be precise, left a void in his life and to my mind, he never seemed quite the same after! He was still jovial and great to be around but there was a spark that was missing!

life, due to conflicting schedules! I did hear of and was sent pictures of, a fantastic urn that was lovingly crafted by a long-time friend of the family, Dave Wallace, an accomplished cabinet maker, who works magic with wood, Dave, working from pictures, created a fantastic likeness of one of Gerry’s Trikes out of wood that would serve as and urn and contain the ashes of both Gerry and Madeline! I climbed aboard my Trike and headed out under gloomy, threatening skies to Beaverton making good time but not good enough to go on the ride through town escorting Gerry’s ashes through as they were carried on a fantastic old pick-up truck back to the Legion! So, I just went directly to the Legion! Gerry was a very well known and much-loved individual who always seemed to extract every ounce of enjoyment out of life! He was a fantastic mechanic with a vivid imagination and a love for motorcycles! He built some pretty amazing creations for a lot of people from near and far and was considered an expert on designing and building trikes! He was also known to be a “Horse Whisperer” possessing a real ability to communicate with animals! A stop at Gerry’s was always an adventure and his shop, was a place where friends would gather and spend hours just talking and working on one project or another! Gerry was a huge part of the local community and a genuine humanitarian! He donated his time and did repairs to the little cars for the Shriners in recognition for all the good work they do for children with disabilities. He also donated all his money earned from being Santa to the legion and Shriners. Gerry’s daughter, Penny, Jeremy, Chelsea and Brady, would like me to convey thanks to everyone who joined the over 300 people at the celebration of life in helping us honour her Dad and for their kind support and love. Strictly V Twin 1st Annual Swap Meet When I was told about the plans to hold a Swap Meet at Strictly V Twins Property, I thought it was a fantastic idea! They certainly have the space! Plus, it would attract people from far and wide who might have never been to the Shop before and this is a great
little shop with a lot to offer! So, I loaded up the truck and headed for the wilds of Pefferlaw! The driveway was already lined with cars, trucks and motorcycles and they even had somebody out front directing traffic! Admittance was free and they had even laid out free coffee and snacks for all to enjoy! I wandered through and started looking through piles of treasures, cleverly disguised as rusty old parts, new parts, shiny parts, not so shiny parts and parts that haven’t seen the light of day for quite some time! There were tons of deals to be had on pretty well anything from used bikes to all the makings of a new used bike (Some assembly would be required!) They had a large turnout of every age group from young to old and everything in between! It had that old school Swap meet Flavour to it and the Hale Family seemed to be loving every minute of it! I’m sure that this will grow to be a very successful annual event and the motorcycle Community needs more events such as this!

Chantel and her son Aidan came along with me for the Show and we arrived just after they opened to doors and it was the usual, packed parking lots and after unloading I had to park a fair way away from the building! I don’t mind as I meet a lot of people on my travels and get to visit along the way! We set up at our usual spot just inside the main front door. There is also a secondary door on the side of the building too at which I dropped a bundle of Mags! Many out this way regard this as the official start to the riding season and there are lots of motorcycles of every size, colour, make and model parked out front! Chantel’s man Scott, met up with us there and helped get us set up! At this point Chantel commandeered the camera and her and Scott took off to explore the Show leaving Aidan to help me. Then the little firecracker Pyper swung by the booth and scooped up Aidan to serve as her assistant on her mission to collect money in support of Veterans! I held down the Fort alone until JR.
showed up with Sr. and he helped me distribute the Mags! It is always good to see Senior out and he still enjoys himself and he loves seeing all the folks who stop to chat a while! He weakens quickly theses days and their appearance was short! It was a busy day with good attendance and I even got to wander around a while myself and

check out some of the goodies that were up for sale! You have to get in here early if you are looking for rare finds as the buyers who come to this event know that competition for these items can be intense! The sellers and buyers come from miles around to attend this meet! It is still a great time with lots to see and do and there are certainly lots of people to chat with along the way! They have a lot of vendors and again, the food and beverage area really does add some flavour to it and was a great addition to the event! You could tell from the sound in the building as things wound down and we packed up and headed for home!
PD Restorations - Revisited A couple of Months ago PD Restorations was The Shop of the Month as they wanted to showcase all the renovations and improvements that they had done to their fine shop since the fire! I wrote about all of the things they had done and took a whole lot of pictures but so caught up in selecting pictures of our lovely model Amanda, (Phil’s niece.) on this bike and that bike didn’t run a single shop picture! So, to rectify that; here are the missing shop pictures! There will be lots going on for us at The Mag over the next few Months! In honour and in support of our Troops, Highway of Heroes Ride on June 2nd followed by The Veterans Memorial Ride and the National Memorial ride in Ottawa Check out the ads and the What’s Shak’n pages for more details! We will be doing a Show and Shine at Oliver’s Ale House on June 10th. Bikefest Bobcaygeon promises to be a blast! Friday 13th runs in June and Baconfest in Lucan happens the next day! The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and the bugs are hitting my face at 90 kms an hour, feeling like bullets!! Now keep in mind, I’ve never been shot, so I presume that I’m embellishing quite a bit, but man do those buggers sting! I mean, honestly, for little assholes smaller than the tip of your finger, they pack quite a wallop!
When talking to friends about it, we laugh and share our stories of drive-by buggings, and a few of my buddies have mentioned getting a yellow jacket caught in your shirt at highway speeds will definitely improve your vocabulary, or at best, completely dissolve any attempt at you getting your ass into Heaven. Hey now!! I’ve not experienced this! I’ve been hit by shrapnel coming off a truck at 90 clicks (which didn’t put a hole in my jeans but still caused me to bleed. Btw, Critter suggested I wear hockey padding after that, with L’il shorts, as he feels Mike would approve and want to see this at his side while out riding, but I think he had far different reasons for that in mind and probably not something I should mention here!!) I haven’t had much opportunity as of late, to ride. First, where we are, the roads are still full of sand, and I’m not one that wants to cause a bunch of stone marks and sand scratches on my baby. May holds a pretty great day for us girls that ride! It’s called International Women’s Ride Day, and our ladies did not disappoint! We had sisters from Nova Scotia, BC and various areas of Ontario out on the asphalt, outnumbering the boys. I’m sure there’s places that I’ve missed. These ladies were out in such numbers that they won an international picture challenge for International Women’s Ride Day. And I am only too happy to share the pics! The goofiness, the laughter, the support and the general love and concern that these women have for one another is so great for new riders and not-so-new riders. This day fell on another, one that I will cover later in the article, as it’s the most important part. Now for the rides……get a pen (or eyeliner, dirt, motor

oil, blood, geez anything that you can write with!) On June 2nd is the Heroes Highway Ride (HHR). If you have not been on this ride, OMG where have you been?? There are literally well over a thousand riders on this ride, and folks in the Trenton area line the streets to see you off for the trek along the 401 to Port Hope. Nothing can prepare you for the town folk in Port Hope lining their streets for you. Were talking hundreds of people, standing, sitting and WAVING at you, showing their support in your ride for our Vets. At times, you’ll see a Vet in full uniform, saluting YOU, and if you don’t cry just at that alone, you are NOT human. The goosebumps, the tears, that absolute love that you feel to ride through the streets and doing what you can to show our Vets just how important they are to our lives. If it was not for the Veterans of this great Country, I would not be able to ride my bike as I do, to live my life as I do, to have the FREEDOMS that I do. So much should be done for these fine men and women in uniform. The town of Port Hope is in full support of this ride. Were talking vendors, food, concerts to name a few. It’s a complete day of good vibes, and nothing could make me miss it!

and I’d like to ask you fine folks to consider attending Desiree’s Ride coming up June 9th. It’s the Chatham-Kent Ride, and registration includes breakfast, dinner and a dance after. There’s other rides over the summer months for this outstanding young woman, who’s life was cut short by violence. This young girl’s story is so touching, and all the proceeds go to helping Victims of Crime. You can learn more (and I encourage you to read her story) on their website www.desireesride.com. Woo-hoo!!! June 10th is the Quinte Ride for Paws 4th annual Poker Run. These guys go all out for our furry buddies, and they do not exclude the riders that support it. There’s breakfast goodies and coffee before the ride
itself, a great BBQ later after the ride, raffles, gift baskets, music and this year, an auction. I’ll be honest, I’ve seen some great prizes as the town of Trenton is a big supporter of the event, and the organizers do their part by getting really cool prizes. and I’ve heard the auction also has some collectible goodies, with regards to sports, bike stuff and such. It’s a fun ride to do as well, as one of the stops goes to Sandy Pines and they always have tasty baked goods, and I’m all about the baked goods! I’m a big fan of our mates at Classy Chassis in Lakefield. On June 23rd, Classy Chassis has its annual Swap Meet. Throughout the summer, they’ll have a weekend BBQ bash, among various other large weekend events that brings in hundreds of bikers from all over. These folks at Classy also do an exceptional job at supporting charities and really put themselves out there to provide all they can to help these charities make the best of their events. I can’t say enough, other than get there and support not only the charity events, but these fine folks that really excel at making these events happen! One of my absolute favourite events, is the 8th Annual Bobcaygeon Bikefest, June 24th! Adding bands on Saturday June 23rd, The Tragically Hits and Boots of Hazard. I can not put into words how excited I am that this event is back. I always have a great time there. Even the ride there, ‘cause you usually end up in a large caravan of riders going in! Dealing with the big power outage that we had, and the ramifications with regards to food and such, we haven’t ridden much. I’ve been tapped. On the day after the big power outage, I was missing a huge Celebration of Life that I needed to get to. One that belonged to a fellow rider, and a friend. Her name is Ellen Calhoun King, and she was the most spontaneous, up-beat, happy, and absolute living-of-life woman that I had ever met. I’ve mentioned a few times, certain women in my life that are little firecrackers, and she was no exception. When I first met her, a few of us girls were introduced to the Windsisters, the women’s riding group that I’ve mentioned in my past articles. The day that I met her, us girls stopped in to a friend’s house to meet up with other WS (Windsisters). This house had a step in the back that it seemed all of us girls would trip over time and time again. Even after doing so, and again, and yet again. And each time Ellen tripped over it, she’d laugh hysterically. Don’t kid yourself, she’d laugh at our less-than-graceful trip-ups too, but she’d laugh even more that she kept doing it. She could not remember Mike’s name in the beginning, so she’d call him Mark. So, Mike joked, and began calling her Nancy. This stuck, and they laughed every time they met because of it. Most of all, she was a biker!! She is also the girl guilty of getting us ladies flashing our asses for the camera! She is the woman that ventured out for a nudist weekend, for her and her hubby’s anniversary. She is also the woman, that had kicked cancer’s ass! Well, recently, the cancer came back. And this time, it wasn’t letting her go. So, in time, a bucket list was made, and her life was making the rest of us seriously question our own mortality. It happened so fast, and with such ferocity. A Living Celebration of Life was planned as she wanted to see all of her family and friends, but she passed just days before. It came as a shock. There are so many memories and pictures that I could share, but I’m going to share a funny poem that Ellen loved and got a giggle from (written by our friend Tone Boner). I will first explain, that our little group of girl riders, the Kingston/Belleville/Trenton/Tweed/Brighton Windsisters group, have teased that our boyfriends and hubbies needed a nickname. This is when the men began to be known as (in joking) the Twatwaffles. Some of you may not get it, but it’s funny all the same, and is totally Ellen. A twatwaffle xmas…written by a twatwaffle for twatwaffles...no twatwaffles were harmed during the writing of this story. (loosely based on bullshit) The Rider’s Mag - Page 17
Twat the night before Christmas with good merry ho ho, The only twatwaffle stirring was the big one named dojo, The twatwaffle patches were well hung with glue, Twatwaffles were grinning ‘cuz they’re well hung too, Windsisters so loaded, they could not sing or talk, So, they farted two verses of Jingle Bell Rock, Me, I rode in and filled up my cup, My bike hit the ground ‘cuz my kickstand was up, Give the camera to Doug, that twatwaffle elf, He’ll take a good picture, of us or himself, Windsisters now sleeping, all snug in their beds, With visions of twatwaffles riding in their heads, Down through the chimney, went Wayne like a shot, Smiling and grinning, a right jolly old twat! Denise, Bonnie and Ellen had quite a kerfuffle, To find a good gift for their awesome Twatwaffles, Maybe some chrome, or a cool Harley hat, They settled on ice cream, and red ass-less chaps, Because of the ice, Denise’s Sportster would slide, She’ll have to make due with her Fatboy to ride, Bonnie ready for Christmas, a Road Glide all her own, Keeping dojo in line when her waffles at home, I rose from my sleep, I thought I heard riders, It was Ellen on her drifter with eight barking spiders, Throwing clothes to Wayne, in hope that he’d catch, All Wayne was wearing was his Twatwaffle patch, 3 waffles on T.W.A. flight xmas eve, “Would you like some T.W.A. coffee? No, we’ll have T.W.A. tea!” You could hear Ellen exclaim as she rode out of site, “They think this shit’s snow, but it’s just rice from my bike!” If you’re looking to add to the Mag, great idea! I sit here with a broken heart - my Mother wants to die. It seems like yesterday that I was a young girl pleading with her and my dad to get me a Moped and now I must face reality - she is 95 years old - in chronic pain - has no strength in her legs and cannot walk. It breaks my heart seeing her sitting in the hospital like this - dependent on others - having to ask for help. As I keep her company I can’t help but think that this is one of the reasons why I wanted to ride my own motorcycle - so that I did not have to rely on others - to ride where and when I wanted to. It has been a struggle for me to get my thoughts together to write this month’s article. I can’t stop crying at the thought of losing Mom - even looking at my motorcycles doesn’t make me smile. Even when the sun shines, it rains in my heart. I know that this will pass however for now, it is really tough. Since my last article, I have been out on Hankster 2.0 several times. I must admit that I absolutely love the thumb throttle that John Cosentini from Motorcycle Enhancements, fabricated and installed for me so that I can ride with one (left) hand. I have no stress on my arm and can ride for hours without having fatigue set in. My first ride of some distance was on Sunday, April 22 when my husband Lloyd and I met old and new friends at the Hagersville Restaurant in... well... you guessed it.... Hagersville.... for breakfast. What made this so remarkable was the fact that we had performed with our band Lefty and The Goons the night before in Kitchener and did not get to bed until 3am Sunday morning. Only for a motorcycle were we able to jump out of bed by 9am and hit the road by 9:45am. After breakfast, I added a very special accessory to my bike - Henrik Lundqvist himself!! For those of you that don’t know, my Honda Shadow Aero bike is named after the New York Ranger goalie - Henrik = Hank aka Hankster. The 2.0 is because the Shadow is my 2nd bike. After ensuring that Hank was secured, we joined approximately 10 bikes and rode into Port Dover. I did find it challenging making tight left turns as I had become accustomed to having a finger throttle in the past which resulted in my hand being in a different position. I was a bit apprehensive and as a result, often hesitated resulting in my giving throttle, then braking as I turned. This led to my overthinking left turns which resulted in my tensing up and getting frustrated. Just breathe I told myself - you got this. I initially thought that I would have issues with the extra weight as a result of the saddle bags which had been installed but they proved to be no issue for me. After a tight left turn to get into the parking lot at the gas station located just past Tim Horton’s in Port Dover on Highway 6, Lloyd and I walked to On The Fringe and made a small purchase as we often do. We also stopped into the Norfolk Tavern to see if Frank was around as we are trying to get Lefty And The Goons rebooked but he was “busy”. After playing there for 12+ years, it seems that we must find another venue in the area to perform at. If anyone has any suggestions, send them my way please and thank-you. Lloyd and I continued on our journey through Simcoe and then home to Mississauga. What a great day! I have never ridden with more than 10 bikes so was thrilled about the possibility of riding with over 200! A good friend of mine, Tim Murchison and member of B.R.O. (Bikers Rights Organization) told me about the B.R.O. Niagara Ride being held on Saturday, May 5. This was the 35th Annual Cover The Kids Run which is the largest awareness ride in Southern Ontario in support of the Community Outreach Program - Erie. For those that do not know, Bikers Rights Organization of Ontario was founded in 1979 and is a politically active group comprised of motorcycle enthusiasts constantly searching for and striving to change unfair legislation and discriminatory practices that affect the lifestyle of today’s modern rider. Their motto is “LET THOSE WHO RIDE DECIDE”. For more information, please visit www.bikersrightsorganization.ca The morning of the ride, Lloyd and I left the house bright and early and hit the highway to ensure that we arrived in Port Dalhousie shortly after 10am when registration started. As we The Rider’s Mag - Page 19
pulled into the parking lot at Lakeside Park, we noticed a group of people with Southern Cruisers patches so approached them as Lloyd and I are members of Peel 373. We knew 1 person, Bill and became instant friends with everyone else. We hung out with them until 1:00pm when the ride started. Hanging out included walking down the street to get some food which included french fries and a hotdog for Lloyd and me. I didn’t know what to expect and must admit that I had a huge smile on my face as I joined the procession of bikes along the route which took us through Niagara Falls ending in Welland for a BBQ and bash featuring live entertainment. I can say that a ride of this caliber certainly tests your riding abilities and while I did enjoy it, I also found it to be quite the workout. Throttle, brake, throttle, shift, shift, brake repeat, repeat. I found that it took all of my concentration to ensure that I kept the proper distance from the bikes in front of me and to remain in staggered formation. I am proud to say that I did it, left turns and all! It was a fantastic experience and very well organized. If you have not done this ride, be sure to include it in your rides for 2019. I look forward to repeating the experience next year so hopefully will see you there! For me, the most thrilling part was riding through Niagara Falls while people waved, took pictures and video as we rolled by. After chilling at the bash for a short while, we decided to head for home as it was quite windy and there was concern that rain might be in the forecast later in the day. 6 of us started our journey on backroads through I don’t know where....I just enjoyed the ride. As we approached Hamilton, we pulled over to put on rain gear incase we hit rain as the sky was starting to look very menacing. Once we hit the Burlington area, 2 bikes split away to continue their journey home which left 4 of us to continue the ride to the Mississauga area. As we rode along Lakeshore road through Burlington and Oakville, I found it so tragic to see large trees which had been ripped out of the earth leaving them lying on their sides with roots The Rider’s Mag - Page 20
exposed as a result of the violent storm which had occurred several days earlier. Once we got home, a light rain started to fall. Lloyd rode his bike into the garage and I started to back my bike up the driveway. Unfortunately, I didn’t get very far before I felt the bike start to fall. I was so tired that I put it down gently, turned off the engine, called for Lloyd and went into the house. Day over. The next day, despite the possibility of rain at some point, we met friends from our chapter and rode to Royal Distributing in Guelph, after which we stopped in Paris for lunch at the Cobblestone Public House which proved to be a great choice! On the ride home, the rain started to fall as we hit Oakville however fortunately it was not too heavy and we were fairly close to home. It was a fantastic day spent with great friends! On Saturday May 12, my band Lefty and The Goons performed at Brown’s Harley Davidson 1-year Anniversary celebration. I had been watching the weather forecast on a daily basis for a week prior to this event as it did not look very promising. Little did I know that there would be something much worse than rain occur prior to the event my Mother was taken to Emergency on Wednesday, May 9. Mom had had a very bad fall approximately 7 weeks prior and had had several more since then which she never told my sister or me about since she didn’t want anyone to worry. Mom was admitted to the geriatric ward on Thursday, May 11 and started to look more like her old self on Friday, May 11. She insisted that my band perform on the Saturday so perform we did. While it did rain in the early morning, it dried out just in time for festivities to begin at 11am. It was great to see many friends stop by - I must say that the Browns truly know how to host a party. On Sunday May 13, Lloyd, our friend Tim from B.R.O and I rode to- 2nd Gear in Ayr to meet our friend Al. Our intent was to get to our meeting place shortly after Noon however I unfortunately got us lost in a residential area of Cambridge which resulted in a delay of nearly an hour if not more. I am so very thankful that Al waited for us as I had never met him face to face. We had become friends on Facebook and I was so thrilled to have an opportunity to meet him. I am glad that he suggested meeting at 2nd Gear - it is a unique shop which celebrates motorcycle culture from clothing to collectibles. The Owner, Carol Ann, is very passionate about motorcycle riding and the community and welcomes all. I have not ridden since that day. Everything right now is about my wonderful Mother who with my Father, made me who I am today. As a result of their endless love, support, encouragement and guidance, I never knew the meaning of the word “can’t” and always found a way to accomplish whatever I set my mind to. Hankster 1.0 and 2.0 will be there for me when I am ready - I have lots of riding to do and once I start, the road will never end. Until next time, why discourage when you can encourage!

I hope everyone’s spring has got off to good start. I know mine has with rides in now to most of the local biking attractions and destinations. It defiantly keeps me busy supporting the clubs and as many public functions as I can fit in as most of us do. Having friends and family out to the Club House is always a good time. One such visit came from some friends from Calgary, The Rock Riders. Although it was a quick ride out to find the Familly Jammin Club House in East Coulee Alberta, it was a great visit none the less. Thanks again guys for coming out, we will definitely be seeing these guys out here or even at their place in Calgary. If you get a chance to talk to any of Alberta’s club members, ask about upcoming events at the Club Houses and they would be glad to invite you to an upcoming open house or BBQ, truly there are lots of places to visit and lots of great people to meet. It’s in these times and places that we sit and talk about the many different ways biking can come into play in our lives and I am always amazed at the new or sometimes old ideas people have come up with or have revised in some way. One such idea came to me from Marion Redpath of Eaglerider in Calgary, a long-time advertiser and supporter of The Riders Mag. Marion was good enough to write up a bit of how this has worked for their business, hopefully some inspiration here for others. Marion’s write up is next, but I, yet again, would like to take this opportunity to let you know that The Riders Mag is a free magazine for the riders, Clubs, and associations of Canada. If you like the mag, please pick up a subscription or keep bugging some of the guys that carry the mag like the Harley shops for your issue. Most of them carry the Mag, most of the time lol. Motorcycling as a Team-building Event Many businesses use golf as an opportunity to build relationships with staff members and customers. Not all of us are golfers and this past season we had several business people who ride get together with co-workers, clients, and partners to take part in a day or two enjoying the beauty of Alberta and our Canadian Rockies from the seat of a motorcycle. In one case, a rider flew up from the USA with one of his strategic customers and the two enjoyed a couple of days of riding on our rental motorcycles. They rode out to Banff and Lake Louise and then carried on up the Icefield Parkway. The two of them came back transformed from the stressed out business guys who arrived at our shop 2 days prior. It was evident that the experience had created a bond between them. As the old expression goes, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know”. The next time that customer has a large order to place, I’m sure that the relationship that was built on that two day riding trip will play an important role in the decision. On another occasion we had two business partners rent a RoadGlide and a StreetGlide. The one fellow was in the market for a new bike and wasn’t sure which one he would like better. They switched bikes part way through the rental so he could get a feel for each. (He decided the RoadGlide was the one for him). It was a great opportunity for The Rider’s Mag - Page 22
the two guys to get out of the office for a day and kick back. And the best part? They charged it to the company credit card as a team-building event. Last September, a group from Houston were in Calgary for the petroleum conference. They asked us to arrange a one-day guided group ride for their staff and key customers. The weather was amazing up until 2 days before the ride when it suddenly turned cool and there were reports of snow at the higher elevations. The route we had put together for them was to take them south of Calgary with a stop at the saloon in Longview before heading west on the Highwood Pass and looping back into Calgary on the Trans-Canada highway. The Pass is the highest elevated paved road in Canada. We knew it was simply going to be too cold and potentially dangerous with icy sections. It was time to enact “Plan B”. We put together a great route out to the Canadian Badlands including a crossing at the Bleriot Ferry, visits to Horse thief and Horseshoe Canyons and of course, across the Eleven Bridges Road to the old coal-mining town of Wayne and the Last Chance Saloon. It was a cool ride in the morning and hubby was quite happy to follow along with the heater in the truck pulling the trailer with a spare bike. As the day warmed up, he said it was hard to be stuck in the truck watching them all riding in front of him. It warmed up the next day and three of the guys came back. We gave them the route for the Highwood Pass and they rode it on their own. They were in awe of the beauty and the sweeping curves. Many of us have experienced the comradery that occurs when groups of motorcyclists get together. In my opinion, a group ride beats any other team building event that I have ever participated while I was part of the corporate world. And besides, I’m a crappy golfer! Benjamin Franklin once defined genius as being 1% inspiration and 99 % perspiration! Krazzy Doug took that formula and applied it to an event that would be known as Bikefest-Bobcaygeon! Back in 2011, thoughts of Bobcaygeon-Bikefest created a spark which turned into a flame that further lit the fire under Krazzy Doug’s ass! That spark inspired him to take a Krazzy idea to hold a big Biker event in the Heart of The Magnificent Kawartha Lakes Region, right in Beautiful Downtown Bobcaygeon! He and his hearty crew of volunteers put a few things together, advertised it and promoted it! Then they put copious amounts of blood, sweat and tears into it and watched it as it has blossomed into an absolutely fabulous Annual event that is known everywhere as BikefestBobcaygeon! The work continues and they have worked hard to make each event better than the last one! Len Hochberg has signed on as Doug’s partner this year and they are full speed ahead! They built on their strengths and strive to correct any flaws or weaknesses! Great events just don’t happen, they are built on knowledge gained from past experiences! Milwaukee-Eight Harmful Oil Build-up
Oil cannot compress. This principle allows the pump to create pressure and volume. However, air will compress. Air mixed with oil in the pump will diminish oil pump effectiveness. Why is this important? Every, Sportster 1977 to present, Twin Cam, and Milwaukee-8 uses a geroter oil pump. All other year Harley’s use a gear driven oil pump. A geroter pump is superior to a gear pump. There is nothing wrong with the gear driven pumps. They powered Harley’s forever until modern times. A geroter pump will produce more pressure and volume than a gear driven pump. From experience, I can say that a gear driven pump will wear faster than its modern counterpart. Tolerances are very precise to maintain pressure and volume. Gears are very good at adversely modifying these tolerances if not installed and maintained correctly. Dirty oil is an enemy of any engine but more ably assists gears in destructive abrasion. The M-8 engine oil feed and distribution throughout the engine occurs by way of the cam support plate. Located inside the gear-case on the engine’s lower right side, the cam support plate, has three main functions; support the outboard end of the camshaft, hence its name, the aforementioned oil circulation, and supporting the internal oil pump on the plate’s inboard side below the camshaft. Oil return accomplishes by gravity-drain oil flow from above, where it is picked up (scavenged) by the oil pump scavenge lobe (port) for removal to the oil return geroters. The oil pump, of which there are already 3 upgrades in 18 months positions behind and bolts to the cam support plate. The rotating flywheel pinion shaft extends through the center of the oil pump, engaging its feed and return inner geroters, powering the oil pump’s independent dual geroter sets. The return geroters are much thicker (about 50%) than the feed geroter set. The purpose is to remove a greater amount of oil from the crankcase. Why? Excess oil left behind will cause flywheel drag as it sloshes through the residue oil and may encourage oil to become gaseous, traveling with the air as it surges through the engine. Oil flows into the feed side between the inner and outer geroters, becoming trapped. As the pump geroters rotate on the pinion shaft, the oil entrance port (hole) is blocked. The non-compressible oil then, squeezes into a progressively smaller and tighter space, creating pressure as it forcefully exits the pump through a newly exposed exit port. As noted there is a different series of oil pumps for oil cooled and water cooled Milwaukee Eight’s. Interestingly, each has three different oil pumps. Why? This indicates a problem(s) on such a new engine. The 1999-2006 Twin Cam geroter nubs are 12/13; the outer geroter has 13 inward-facing nubs that interact with the 12 outward facing nubs of the inside geroter. The two rotors move eclectically, relative to each other creating and closing space between the two. The 20072017 Twin Cam pumps 10% more feed oil plus the pump scavenges 23% more return oil with a a 10/11 nub
arrangement, which gives it increased pressure capacity. Even back in 2007, H-D was increasing scavenge (return) capacity in attempting to control blowby (venting) of oil laden mist to the outside atmosphere. The M-8 continues use of the 10/11 nub sizing arrangement but overall rotor sizes increase in area to create more volume. The late-Twin Cam oil pumps worked fine; so, why is an increase in M-8 oil volume necessary? Perhaps more return (sumping, scavenging) oil is required to lessen oil blowby. Blowby, venting, and oil carryover are terms used to describe transferring oilified air going somewhere not intended. So, where does this polluted air blow by or carry over to? Since 1992, there have been progressively improved breather (venting) mechanisms in each head to cleanse oil molecules from air before allowing the air to vent outside of the engine into the fuel injection (EFI) breather. The engine then sucks and ingests this air through the EFI throttle body, into the combustion chamber to re-burn it to get rid of any remaining pollutants. An engine must breathe in and out because the pistons, which descend together on a Harley-Davidson during the engine’s intake and power strokes displaces much air. The air must go somewhere, so it turbulently exits the bottom end compartment into the right side gear-case compartment and up the pushrod tunnels into the heads where pressurized air vents to the outside world. The ascending pistons (compression and power strokes) create a semi-vacuum below as there is not enough remaining air to fill the rapidly increasing bottom end space. Therefore, the engine must breathe in air from the outside world. The cycles of ascending and descending pistons happens thousands of times every minute (rpm). Why not have one piston ascending while the other descends equalizing this turbulent transferring of air? Well, this would resolve the problem of Milwaukee-8 engine sumping/braking through the reduction of oilified air exiting the engine. Yes, I feel the puzzle can be resolved through air transfer reduction! However, this problem described by H-D (Service Bulletin M1450, 2017-10-24), as “when an excessive amount of oil is suspended in the crankcase and the flywheel must travel through the oil, resulting in a loss of power or a high degree of engine braking and potential engine component damage with extended use under these conditions.” I think this is primarily a venting issue not an oil pump

one. Simply put, the oil pump cannot pump air and excess air is pressurized to enter the pump in the form of an oilified mist. Compressing air causes cavitation, reducing oil pump pressure and thus effectiveness. Oil molecules impregnates this fast transferring air in and out of the bottom end compartment. It is a violent world inside an engine. On Twin Cams and Evolution motorcycles, the head breathers are sometimes overwhelmed and fail to separate the oil from the exiting air. Sometimes this oil vapor in the venting air liquefies and deposits into the air breather to drain out of it onto the engine’s side. This is blowby resulting from vented gases. This is certainly annoying to the consumer but becomes huge no-no for CARB (California Air Resources Board) and the stringent Euro 4 emissions dictates that came into force last year. The EPA may be relaxing its emission requirements but other countries are increasing theirs. Again, Europe is a motorcycling culture with the largest population of biking consumers. H-D cannot depend solely on U.S. sales for success. The Milwaukee Eight is not allowed to have oil blowby out the breather. This presents big problems for an antiquated design that cannot be changed too much because bikers have a love affair for the traditional H-D engine configuration. So, did the Milwaukee-8 attempt to control blowby by restricting the breather apparatus thus creating the situation of sumping and engine braking? I will further discuss the symptoms, causes, and solutions to the new Milwaukee-Eight sumping and engine braking problems next month. The inner geroter on both the feed and return also known as the scavenge (shown) compartments have a flat slot that mates with a corresponding flat on the rotating flywheel pinion shaft that extends into the engine’s gear-case compartment. The pinion shaft powers both the Twin Cam and M-8 oil pumps. The scavenge port extends below to suck up gravity-fed oil from the bottom of the engine for return to the oil reservoir. Thank You Jesus! Spring is Finally Here Greetings from one dude who is certainly glad to see that the white stuff has finally left the building. Man that has to be the longest winter I remember in my 48 years on this planet of ours. I trust that all of you had a safe winter and were able to spend time with family and friends. I was certainly glad to pull the cover off the bike recently and get it ready for another season. As it stands, I have a few more repairs to do and hopefully that will be all the bike needs this season. I am almost to the point of needing another part time job to keep up on repair costs! Nothing seems to be getting any cheaper these days. I am looking forward to seeing everyone out and around this season. Last year an unfortunate car accident kept me from riding most of the season. Praise God it was not a bike accident!!!!! If you see me in your travels please say hello and introduce yourself. I am the new kid on the block and am trying hard to get acquainted with everybody. Let’s just pray this warm weather is here to stay. So this month I thought we could look to a little wisdom from King Solomon. I hope you find this as encouraging as I have as I learn to trust the Lord in every situation. Proverbs 3:1-6. My son do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity. Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight. Trusting in the Lord is not always an easy thing. I find if often difficult to trust due to past hurts from people. We need to remember that God is not like us. He is eternal and he knows all and sees all. He knows why we do the things we do, and why we think the things we think. I choose to trust the one who knows my words and thoughts even before I speak them (Psalm 139). Hey everyone, Momma missed you all last month, Dan from “Just East of the Rockies” was a busy boy and had lots to cover. I’ve been busy getting ready for riding season. This year I am hoping to cover a few different events that will take me to Saskatchewan and British Columbia. I am looking forward to meeting new people and discovering new scenic routes and hope you will all come Riding With Momma. In February Momma’s riding season started so to speak…lol. It Was the 2nd Annual Winter Biker Blues Poker stumble. Works the same as a poker run but without the bikes and a lot more Beer. This Year S.E.A.R had help from BWC, Kanuckleheads, Riders for HALO and new to the mix this year were the Support Veteran Paratrooper Group. As you may imagine, with all these groups being involved we were looking for a great turnout.
Each group got donations from the public for the Silent Auction, the winners of the best hand, 2nd place hand and the 50/50 all donated the money back in it’s entirety. The Veteran Paratroopers MC who were there made a cash donation in the amount of $600.00 to the 3 choices of charities. Games were played, beer was drank and many new friendships were made with a total amount of $ 6,860.00 being raised. Redcliff & Area Bikers Give Back to Charity April 21st South Eastern Alberta Riders (S.E.A.R) held their 2nd Annual Swap Meet in Redcliff, AB. In the past the swap meet had been held in Redcliff, hosted by George & Tracy Shrigley from V-Twin Vitals (at that time in Redcliff) at the Harmony Hall. After years of hard work George and Tracy stepped down as organizers of the Swap meet hoping someone else would take it on. Darwin Bernhart from Midnight Rider Custom Covering in Medicine Hat planned the Swap Meet the next year but found it to be a lot of work for 1 person and declined to keep hosting it. After a few years of not having the swap meet, S.E.A.R. members decided in 2017 as a group to host their 1st Annual Swap Meet. SEAR looked for a Venue for the Swap Meet that would meet their specific need and wanting to keep it in Redcliff. The SEAR Executive approached the Town so see if the Redcliff Rectangle (Arena) would be available for use. To SEAR’s excitement The Town of Redcliff agreed to let us use it and graciously donated the venue. S.E.A.R. grateful for the chance to keep the swap meet in Redcliff, decided to make one of their primary charities The Redcliff Youth Centre. This would fill their commitment to give back to the community that had given to them. In 2017 SEAR made 2 donations totalling $4,325.00 from their various fund raisers in Redcliff. Unfortunately, this year the Redcliff Rectangle was undergoing some unforeseen renovations so SEAR had to find a new venue. After exhausting all their avenues, Kevin & Tammie Meyer from Meyer Drilling in Redcliff stepped up and donated their shop for SEAR to hold their Swap Meet, allowing the group to keep the swap meet in Redcliff until the Rectangle is available for next year. Again, making it possible for SEAR to keep donating to the Youth Centre. On hand at the Swap Meet alongside SEAR were representatives from BWC (Brothers Without Colors), Friends of the Kanuckleheads (All from Redcliff), Support Veteran Paratroopers (Medicine Hat) and The Riders For HALO (Dunmore) to make cheque presentations to the 3 charities that had been chosen earlier in the year at the 2nd Annual The Rider’s Mag - Page 35
Winter Biker Blues Poker Stumble. It was decided that 100% of all the money raised at the Poker Stumble would be donated to the charities, with each group having a say as to where they wanted their money to go. The first Cheque presented was to Holly Standnicki – Executive Director of Big Brothers and Big Sisters Medicine Hat. The Cheque for $1,519.00 was an unexpected Donation to the organization that and caught her a little by surprise. The second presentation of $1,769.00 was made to JD Gaetan – Executive Director for HALO (Helicopter Air Lift Operation). JD and the crew from HALO have been instrumental in saving lives in Southern Alberta and Southern Saskatchewan. As Riders we know the importance of quick medical response and the need to donate to this lifesaving cause. Without the publics donations, HALO would not be able to do what they do, HALO is NOT a government funded organization. The final presentation was made to The Redcliff Youth Centre. Janea Ulrich – Youth Wellness & Program Coordinator for the Youth Centre had a table at the swap meet trying to raise money for the Youth Centre selling raffle tickets. A Grant called Birdies for Kids provided by Alta. Link through the Shaw Charity Event in Calgary will make it possible for every donation that the Youth Centre gets until September 2018 be matched by the grant 150%. Meaning the $3,572.00 that was presented to Janea on behalf of the Bike groups will turn into $8,930.00 to be used by the Youth Center. THE BLESSING OF THE BIKES The blessing of the bikes presented by UMCI (United Motorcycle Club International) of Medicine Hat was held Sunday May 6th at the Gordon Memorial United Church in Redcliff, AB. It was a beautiful day for the Blessing with 90 bikes and riders showing up to have their bikes blessed for the 2018 riding season. Reverend Blaine Schaufele a member of the UMCI and recently the Chaplin for the Blue Knights was officiating, dressed in his Leather Vest representing his groups. The strength of this man knows no bounds. Rev Blaine is currently fighting the fight of his life, that dreaded disease CANCER. You couldn’t tell as he stood before the congregation doing what he loved to do. A little paler, skinnier and perhaps a little tired, but watching him talk to the over 90 bikers with a twinkle in his eye and smile on his face somehow was very reassuring. He spoke about the possibility that there was a chance that he wouldn’t be able to give his sermon, but through the power of the Lord he was having a good day after many bad days. He continued to express his love for this event and that he looked forward to doing it every year, the joy of having people in his church who might have never walked through his door was his strength. Wendy Karsten, from Badlands Harley Davidson share 2 scriptures from the Bible which reflected the day so profoundly. Building from the scriptures Wendy shared, Rev Blaine went on to compare the room full of members from 13 different clubs as Gentiles. Each and every person, biker and nonbiker had been drawn there that day to receive his message with an open heart. A young lady who was there amongst the Bikers spoke up and stated that she had come in honor of her Uncle who had passed away in a motorcycle accident in 2017, she said it made her feel closer to him having so many bikers around her and knew in her heart her uncle was watching down on all those in attendance. Offering helmets were passed throughout the congregation with the proceeds going towards the Memorial Windows that decorated the Chapel. It was also going towards updating the Memorial plaque that adorns the wall with all the names of the fallen riders for the past years. After the service was complete the ladies of the United Church invited the congregation downstairs for Coffee and Cupcakes that they had prepared for us. While some were downstairs partaking in the refreshments the rest congregated outside by their Rides waiting for the good Reverend to make his way to them to bless their bikes. Women in the wind – Wind Sun Riders – Lethbridge and the Southern Alberta Riders from Lethbridge were escorted half way home by riders from multiple groups. It was a nice day for a ride. We would all like to thank the UMCI bike club of Medicine Hat for all their hard work and planning to make this a well received event for the Bikers. All of the bikers that attended would like to send our healing prayers and strength to Rev. Blaine and his family. We thank him for his inspiration and strength. Much Honor, Love and Respect. Well looks like spring has finally sprung! Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers and the fathers out there that are pulling double duty lot of respect for the men! They’re out there! Single fathers raising their children on their own April 22nd British Car and Bike Show, Ancaster Fairgrounds, lots of car showed up unfortunately did not see any bikes! Otherwise I would have taken pictures to put them into magazine but it turned out to be an amazing day! Lots of British and some very cool looking stuff! Hopefully next year, more bikes will show up! April 28th, that was the Kitchener spring cleanup Swap meet! All vintage bikes and stuff for the Vintage bikes! It was held at the Paris Fairgrounds however on my way out there, it was raining! I decided to turn around and go for breakfast instead! Later I would meet up with a gentleman from Hanover, Tim Murchison! We did meet up in Paris, although they were closing down at the time we got there! The rain, rained everywhere else but right where I was supposed to be going! Go figure! It was nice meeting up with you Tim! Ride safe, be safe! Tim rides with the BRO Elgin, Middlesex, they do fantastic charity work I was very proud to give some of my stuffed animals for their next toy run! April 29th, 34th annual Ancaster Swap meet hosted by the Road Runner Club! What a busy show! Still a bit cold to be outside but it’s getting warmer and spring is definitely in the air Then I was off to the Guardians of the Children meet and greet at The Geekery Pub 7000 McLeod Road Unit 8! Boy I’m so glad I waited to get food there as they have fantastic fare! What a great group of people and I believe they had three more sign-ups that day! Some of them were from the Canadian biker Community are very proud to one of the administrators on that site! A great group of people! On April 4th this year I finally decided to join the Guardians of the children! I went for my police check and to give them the information that they need. This one last thing I need to have is the video. This is quite the community and quite the family! Something that I know I’m going to be very proud to be associated with Sunday May 6th, Fort Erie motorcycle swap meet thank you butch that is Shawn’s brother for all your help I appreciate it, thank you Turned out to be a very good day for me I enjoyed meeting everybody but here’s the part I wanted to tell you about the most outside where all the bikes were coming and you might have noticed a motorcycle getting smashed with a sledgehammer $5 a hit! The money was going towards the Guardians of the children’s, Little Angels program! Wow! That bike was totally trashed by the time it was done and a Gentleman came along and bought it at the end! The money that they raised goes to help children that have been in abusive situations to help get them food, counseling, shelter, or whatever else they may need! Thank you one and all for taking your aggression out on an inanimate object! Hopefully we’ll run that event again! Also, a very good friend of mine came all the way from Windsor! Unfortunately she got there just a little too late and everybody was packing early I think in the next few issues are going to start talking about etiquette for swap meets and if the show supposed to be run to a certain time it should stay to that certain time! Just because you’re not making money quick doesn’t mean you should cut out early when the first person breaks down and makes the whole show look bad! They should stay to the end! I have no idea W.T.F. is going on with old carcass of mine, but it’s giving me more problems and breakdowns than my ’82 Shovelhead! I hate to sound like a broken record, but my body decided to go its own way in the last week of April. Deciding it was past due for the hospital. As I started to walk through our living room, my body said this wasn’t what it wanted, and I did a faceplant in the middle of the room. Even with the Boss and the help of her sister couldn’t get me up, so it was ambulance time to the Miramichi General. On arrival they rushed me through the paperwork shit through the Boss and directly to x-ray. There they told me to stand in front of the machine for a chest x-ray. I suggested that this might not be the best idea, but they insisted so I tried, only to do another faceplant in front of the machine! Apparently, I have this move perfected! So, after a week of being stabbed with needles, poked and prodded, along with 3 blood transfusions, they got the internal bleeding stopped, and finally released me, with return visits carrying on until they get to the source and cause of this malfunction! Happy spring! The Boss and I made it down to the Bacchus M/C (Albert County) Swap meet on the 5th of May to see the guys and check out the goodies laid out for sale. Before you could enter the street that the Meet was on though, every car and bike had to go through a ‘welcoming committee’ of about a dozen local L.E. and show license, ownership, and insurance to enter! But aside from that it was a great time with a super turnout. I also got a chance to pay my 2018 A.C.C. dues. They informed me of the A.C.C. County Ride on June 2nd, they would love to see you there! Start location is 94 Main Dr. Miscouche, P.E.I. June 2nd @ 11:00 a.m. The riding season is now in full swing now in the Maritimes, and I’ve already heard reports of 4 motorcycle involved accidents. Keep your head up and be careful out there (you know cagers are blind to bikes!!!) I’ve finally got 2 of my fleet out, tuned, gassed up and plan to get touring soon (between, going to and from Doctor appointments!) that’s it for this month, Atlantic Jeff signing off! Be well!

Well here we are in the second issue of the Riders Mag for the 2018 riding season and I hope everyone is enjoying this season so far. I got off to a slow start as my bike had to go in for some needed repairs before the season really got underway! Unfortunately, I missed a few events and I apologize to BRO Niagara and to Sean from the Fort Erie Swap meet for not making it out to cover the events and this will be a short column for this issue. Burlington Bike Night This is the second season (I think) for the Appleby Crossing, Social bike night hosted by Corsa Motocicletta located at 2301 Appleby line. I arrived just after 7 to see a parking lot full of bikes of every make and model and people socializing with this one and that one. Contributing writer, Stitch was also there, so we looked around at all the bikes and chatted with this one and that one along the way. I stopped to talk with Little Dean and GPS from the Guardians of the Children Toronto chapter as they promoting their ride for June 2nd and then moved on. It was good to see all my friends like; Terry Francoeur and his wife Christine, Jackie McGowan, Lisa Hamilton, Jolene Mosca and others who were there as well. Policaro Harley Davidson (located in Oakville) had a booth set up and I met and talked to Tony for a bit before he headed back to Oakville. The crowds started to fade as it was a nice night for a ride so I said my goodbyes and headed out for a little ride before going home. The second annual “Blessing of the Bikes” was held on May 7, 2018 at the First Lutheran Church in Kingsville sponsored by the “Hogs for Hospice”, it was a great day for a ride, and offered opportunities to meet and greet everyone we hadn’t seen over the winter, make some new friends and share our “way too long” winter experience, and look forward to the riding season. There were short speeches by the pastor, as well as the mayor of Kingsville, and Joe Oswald from Hogs for Hospice. They were more than inviting to all of us who attended and they also asked us to join them for a free BBQ and pizza lunch supplied by the church. There were live bands, one for the church service and another to entertain the bikers who showed up to have their bikes blessed for the upcoming season. I find it ironic some times that as a “group” of people we are sometimes looked down upon by members of society! For me it does my heart good to know that there are people out there that genuinely care about us and support us with our charity rides, and the support we give back to the community. Not much else to say this month, besides the weather not cooperating, but, summer is coming and lots more to do, more rides, more good times, and more great people to meet. Will be vacationing in the beginning of July and hope to have some stories to share, not exactly sure where we are going, only know we have to eventually come back for work. Hello my northern friends! Spring is flying by down here; the Morel Mushrooms are in full bloom and things are turning a lovely shade of green!!! This month’s adventures have been more from a spectator than a rider point of view. Any idea what a woman who had a Hysterectomy and a man who broke his wrist crashing his dirt bike have in common? Well, they are both off work this month and unable to ride! To fill our days, we have found some excellent motorcycle viewing opportunities. In South Central Wisconsin a few riders got together several years ago to take a roll in the wind between the dots on the map referred to as Pine Bluff and Leland. These 2 small communities both have a bar and a few houses and as the crow flies are only about 30 miles apart. The ride began on a few Cafe Racers with the slogan, “Ride hard ride short” back in 1994. Today the ride is known as The Slimey Crud Cafe Racer Run but every bike you can imagine from homemade, factory built, antique, to brand new, shows up the 1st Sunday each May and each October. The ride goes no matter the weather and people from all over the country attend. Some runs there may be a few hundred machines and others upwards of 5000. There is nothing set or organized other than the 1st Sunday of May and October it is known that the bikes roll

into Pine Bluff starting around 10 A.M. and then find their way to Leland around Noon or 1ish and the route depends on the rider, it may take 70 miles and a few hours to get from point A to point B or it may take 30 miles and 45 minutes. Let me just say for a complete free for all it is one of THE best bike shows I’ve ever been to! The people, the machines, the history, and the roads are all amazing! Roads in the surrounding states tend to follow a bit of a grid work format running parallel to each other and generally in a North, South, East, West direction. Roads here in Wisconsin follow no such format and tend more to make no sense direction wise. You can turn down any road you please heading any direction and are almost guaranteed to do at least one full U-turn and half a dozen left right maneuvers before ending up in a completely different place than you had imagined. This is why it is a wonderful state to ride motorcycles in, who the hell wants to know where they are going to end up, it’s not the destination it’s
the ride, right?! Once in a while in my travels I start to think I must have seen one of every make and model of bike that has ever been built. Then I wonder around the Crud Run and discover that that is not true! We were strolling around the rows of motorcycles and stumbled upon an ancient machine called a Sunbeam. This thing looked like a tank on wheels and I was guessing had to be from the 1940’s riddled with all kinds of buttons and levers I’d need an instruction manual to decipher. Then the question comes to mind, when did these stop existing, and why? Little did I know that a few days later I’d be standing in a National Motorcycle Museum in front of another one! Anamosa Iowa is home to J&P Cycles, a huge aftermarket motorcycle parts store, along with a Hill-climb and a museum. The museum is nonprofit and has been growing since 1989, currently it has over 450 motorcycles and machines on display, some dating back to the late 1800’s! Talk about a history lesson, Wow! The first large display inside the doors is of an all-time American Legend and my own personal hero, Evel Knievel. I’m assuming you have heard of him? This dare devil holds the world record for most bones broken, by the end of his career jumping motorcycles over various objects and distances he had confirmed 433 bone fractures! Not a record I’d be looking to break! The museum winds around through multiple rooms from this display and each area is filled with treasures from motorcycles past! There are motorcycles that starred in movies and motorcycles that were raced and chased and some I had to wonder if they had ever even been ridden. A few had made more than 1 trip around the world! Mopeds, dirt bikes, Small Engine Sales and Repair street bikes, Enduro and adventure bikes, flat trackers, hill climbers, drag racers, SMALL ENGINES touring bikes, mini WATERLOO ONTARIO bikes, 100 year old bikes, and many I’m (519) (519) 885-3860/1(877) 885-3860/1(877) 776-3379 776-3379 probably forgetting. This place has everything and then some! The Flying Merkel always catches my eye with its bright orange paint and white tires. The British machines and all of their “wrong sided” controls are another personal favorite, and who doesn’t love the 19301940’s red Indians? and size and for $15.00 you can wander around all day admiring and reading about them...very similar to heaven I believe. If I could just hear each one fire up and just maybe take them all for a spin... Each year there are changes to the calendar of rides and events taking place in our motorcycle community in Eastern Ontario and this Spring there were three new additions that took place, two of which were swap meets. The first one was a Spring Get Together & BBQ Fundraiser for the “A Chance Animal Rescue Inc” hosted by members of The Celtic Brotherhood and although it was a last-minute idea and only promoted a week before it took place, it was awesome! To see the number of riders who came together to help the dog rescue and show support for TCB was awe inspiring! Area clubs donated money and had members onsite to promote various rides and events which their clubs were hosting or involved with over the summer! They answered questions of what it would take for anyone who was interested in becoming a member of their club. Much thanks to clubs like B.A.C.A, (Bikers Against Child Abuse), Bondslave MC a Christian MC and members of the White Knucklerz RC who came up from Cornwall to participate. Other clubs that sent members to show their support were A.R.M, (Association of Recovering Motorcyclists) as well Hillbilly from the Capital City Bikers Church & Yves Brisbois and some others from the Last Disciples MC! Last, but never least, Duane and Jeff from the Simple Men MC. Everyone was pleased that Jim Poulin (Greely Swap Meet) and his lovely wife Veronica came by and the news that not only had Jim’s badly broken leg healed beyond what they might have hoped for but also that his cancer treatments were going well too. Dave & Lyn Presley had an information table set up to continue their award winning work of promoting people to please register as organ donors ! While I was over having a talk with them Ottawa City Councillor George Darouze came by the BBQ to show his support for the motorcycle community and their charity work! We thank him for showing support for the event. A special thanks to all volunteers including Dave and Noella Kuhnle who are the founders of the Ride for Autism Ottawa for helping with the BBQ. At one point I was sitting outside on the cement dock with several other friends including brother Doug Taylor, Merlin, Jim Sharp and my wife Bette took a picture of us with my camera! It wasn’t until I was processing the pictures a couple of day later and saw it and the thought crossed my mind that not only have we known each other for decades but I couldn’t help but smile and think that there was over three centuries of Scoundrels (in a good way) in that picture! It is one of my favorites ever and I didn’t take it. Much thanks to the over 100 riders and people who showed up including our good friend and Mayor of Merrickville Dave Nash! A very special thanks to Quinn, the canine ambassador from A Chance Animal Rescue inc for spending the day charming everyone especially the ladies and the children. Martha and Bonnie from the rescue want to say thank you to all because every bit helps and you all helped out big time. A week later was the ceremony of the official declaration of month of May being Motorcycle Awareness Month! As in years past, SOAR (Society of Ottawa Area Riders) organized an event so that clubs and independent riders could participate in the ceremony and hear the mayor’s proclamation! This year, because of the threat of rain, SOAR was able to use one of the large salons in City Hall and a number of different groups had info tables. Safer Roads Ottawa along with Rob Wilkinson who have been major supporters of SOAR, as an organization over the years took part as well along with Michel Dupuis and Claude Brunet from 2804 Dice Run! Shriners Motorcycle Club and The Celtic Brotherhood. Much thanks to everyone who participated in the event. One of the things missing this year’s calendar, was the annual Capital City Bikers Church Swap Meet! I often say is the unofficial beginning of riding season but let us hope that this event will hopefully return next year! In the meantime, there was a new swap meet that was held at the Metcalfe Fairgrounds about a five-minute drive from B.A Machine Performance Cycle! While it was supposed to be a motorcycle and car swap meet I would say that most of the vendors there brought bike related stuff and although it was supposed to be an indoor event the sheer joy of having the sun out inspired all the vendors but one to haul their tables outside on the grass. We set up some tables and made sure that anyone who didn’t have their hard copy of the Mag got one! While there, we were visited by a number of people who are organizing events that had not been brought to my attention! As I comment at the end of each of my monthly columns, please be sure that you or one of your associates should contact me so the Mag and myself can promote the event and help to bring more people to it. Anyhow, it was a fun day and we had a number of friends drop by to say hello including Wolf Lee from the Boozefighters MC and a few of his crew and were invited to a party they were having but had to pass. We had a promoter come by who was holding a swap meet out in Vankleek Hill, just east of Ottawa and home to the popular Beau’s Beer (sadly it only bears my name) which was being held in May! I will be at the Bondslave MC Freedom Run during the day and TCB is donating one of their Free Breakfasts, I hope to take a run out late in the afternoon and check out this swap meet and let you know how it was. I want to thank Stu and Ryan for holding the Metcalfe Swap Meet and hope that in some way the Mag can help them to make the 2nd Annual one bigger and better because we need more events like this one in the Ottawa area. The last of the three new events that I mentioned was a swap meet held in Renfrew which is about one hour west of Ottawa or up the valley as we all say! This 1st annual event was promoted by our good friend and brother Eddie Hozsko who is a member of the Simple Men MC from Snake River who decided that the valley could use a swap meet as not only, are there a lot of motorcycles up there but also a strong tradition of vintage motorcycles! The Old Bastards MC, who are having a couple of events that I hope to cover later this summer. The RCAF Wing Hall was easy to get to and is a perfect venue for a swap meet and for a first year Eddie was able to get lots of vendors with actual swap for sale including two truly long time friends and brothers! Doug Taylor from Freedom Harley and Felix “Cycle Salvage” Gaim who each had several tables and floor
space covered in quality parts and accessories. Perry and Genane Montgomery from Ingleside had a table promoting their GP Laserworks business and they are both members of the Dedicated Few RC. and as you will have read in recent columns of mine are the hosts of the Children’s Treatment Center Ride in Cornwall! I will be telling you all about it in my next column. Also up from the Cornwall way was Alain Cowboy Bussieres along with his lovely lady Sue Adams, had several tables with everything from Jewelry to belt buckles. They are both big supporters of The Riders Mag and try to get to as many events as they can over the season. Every first-year event needs to get settled in and now that Eddie has this event running I am sure that next year this will become a major event for up the valley and its motorcycle community and we had a great time along with Brother Chuck and look forward to next year. We ran a full-page ad in the May issue about the National Memorial Ride that is taking place on Sunday June 3rd! I missed the last couple of years I have always been at this event and I hope to attend and cover it this year. This NMR has a special meaning to me and it really should have special meaning to all of us and I look forward to seeing many familiar and new faces participating in the NMR on that Sunday especially from area clubs. There are a few events I want to remind everyone in the eastern Ontario area about and hope that you can get out to support them! The Cowpaddy Boys Poker Run on June 2nd, The Empower the Children Ride hosted by the Guardians of the Children and a similar ride taking place in Kingston on June 9th. Another one is the Break The Chain Poker Run & Show and Shine on July 7th at Canadian Gears Motorcycle in Carleton Place as part of Teen Challenge Canada! I want to be sure you all remember to come out and take part in the Awareness Ride for Brain Injury hosted by The Celtic Brotherhood on June 16th. This year you can participate in the DIY Poker Run or you can start the day off at the grounds and just enjoy the activities that will be going on throughout the day including the Busted Bucket Challenge© and the Motorcycle Rodeo

along with tattoo contests and lots of other things including various demos and information booths and vendors and entertainment. Many of you may remember when The Celtic Brotherhood first started their Forever 2 Wheels Bike Nights in the Ottawa area, twelve years ago, of all of them the most popular and largest was the one at Rideau Carleton Raceway every Wednesday night from May until late September. Some nights there were well over 500 motorcycles in the south end parking lot and it was a opportunity for area riders to come out and meet up with and maybe even make a few new friends, while checking out the other motorcycles. Over the years there was some pretty incredible paintwork and builds for both the riders and the general public to take in! One year we got a trailer from Big Dog Motorcycles to come and set up a display of their choppers! Four years ago, TCB decided that they could no longer devote the time
or manpower to continue hosting the bike nights and did ask around to see if any other club or organization would like to take it over. This year the Bondslave MC a Christian motorcycle club, have taken on the task of being the host club! Both, TCB and myself look forward to seeing Bike Night at RCR return back to what it once was! Much thanks to Church and his crew. One other thing that I want to ask all of the readers and supporters of The Riders Mag; There are over half a million Brain Injury Survivors in the province of Ontario alone and

many of them are bikers! Even if they weren’t, bikers they represent our family members, our friends, our neighbors and people we work with and they need your support for the “Invisible” Injury! So please contact your local Brain Injury Association and help out whether by donating or in some other way!
